What Is Musclespan, and How Do You Increase This Longevity Metric?

0

You’re more likely to fall and seriously injure yourself, Dr. Lyon points out, which “causes survivability to plummet.” Being less able to care for and nourish yourself also increases your chance of illness, just as being more sedentary lowers mental activity and lessens circulation, which can put you on a path to cognitive decline, Deborah M. Kado, MD, a board-certified internist and geriatrician, and co-director of the Stanford Longevity Center, tells SELF. Meanwhile, the movement necessary to build muscle both shunts blood to your brain and exercises its coordination abilities, Dr. Kado says, helping safeguard cognition.

Perhaps less evident, if just as important, are the many functions of muscle beyond keeping you upright and agile. For one, it’s a critical factor in metabolic health, serving as the biggest storage location in the body for glucose, Dr. LaBrasseur says. The more muscle you have, the better you can clear sugar from your blood—and the lower your odds of developing type 2 diabetes. At the same time, active muscle breaks down triglycerides (a type of cholesterol) for fuel, Dr. Lyon says, reducing the level in your blood. Taken together, these shifts power up your metabolism, in turn lowering your risk for heart disease.

Muscle is also “an endocrine organ,” Dr. Lyon says: When you contract it, it oozes proteins called myokines, which act like hormones, trickling throughout the body and signaling a variety of beneficial effects. Doctors suspect these agents, like brain-derived neurotrophic factor (which supports memory and learning) and interleukin-6 (which lessens inflammation), could explain how muscle-building seems to lend a hand to far-off organs.

And finally, robust skeletal muscle seems to function like body armor, Dr. Lyon says, making you more resilient in the face of intense physical stressors. For example, those with ample muscle seem to fare better during chemo and recover more easily from critical illness, Dr. LeBrasseur points out. By contrast, frailty—or a weak state of low muscle mass and limited mobility—can make you more vulnerable to negative health outcomes, like longer hospital stays, poor tolerance for medical interventions, and yep, premature death.

How to measure your personal musclespan

You can get a sense of your musclespan by assessing your strength. To gauge your lower extremity strength, Dr. LeBrasseur recommends a basic chair stand test: See how quickly you can stand and sit back down in a chair five times in a row—if you’re under age 40, you should be able to finish in fewer than 10 seconds (add a second for ages 40 to 70 and for each decade after that). And to assess your upper body strength, see how long you can dangle from a pull-up bar in a dead hang; 10 seconds is great for a beginner, and longer is better.

FDA targets sunscreen modernization with bemotrizinol proposal

0

The US Food and Drug Administration announced a proposed order today that would add bemotrizinol to the list of permitted sunscreen active ingredients. The proposal is part of FDA’s ongoing effort within the Office of Nonprescription Drugs to modernize the OTC monograph system and expand consumer access to effective UV filters.

FDA details proposed addition

In its announcement, the agency stated that bemotrizinol offers broad-spectrum protection and shows low systemic absorption in available data.

“The agency has historically moved too slowly in this area, leaving Americans with fewer options than consumers abroad, we’re continuing to modernize the regulation of sunscreen and other over-the-counter drug products,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, MD, MPH. “Americans deserve timely access to the best safe, effective, and consumer-friendly over-the-counter products available.”

According to FDA, bemotrizinol rarely causes irritation and would be considered generally recognized as safe and effective for adults and children over six months if the order is finalized. The request to add the ingredient was submitted by DSM Nutritional Products LLC at concentrations up to six percent, as previously reported by CDU in October.

“Bemotrizinol would be a welcome addition to the current array of effective sunscreen active ingredients already available to American consumers” said Karen Murry, M.D., acting director of the Office of Nonprescription Drugs.

“The reforms to the monograph drug system contained in the CARES Act have greatly streamlined the monograph drug regulatory process, and we look forward to working with other companies on bringing products containing other new active ingredients to market for a wide array of conditions in multiple therapeutic areas, in a much more timely fashion than was possible in the past,” she added.

A public comment period on the proposal is currently open, and if FDA determines that bemotrizinol meets GRASE criteria, it will be added to OTC Monograph M020.

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) echoed the announcement, noting in a press release that the ingredient’s potential role within established public-health goals. HHS highlighted that the proposal fits within federal efforts to support products that reduce the risks of sunburn, skin cancer and early skin aging when used as directed.

Dermatology expert reacts

Clinical and cosmetic dermatologist Jane Yoo, MD, MPP, told CDU the proposal holds relevance for patient populations where UVA stability is critical. “Clinically, the strongest impact of a filter like bemotrizinol is on UVA protection,” Dr. Yoo said.

“High, stable UVA coverage is crucial for patients with melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and photoaging changes, so this ingredient could be particularly helpful for skin of color patients and anyone treating pigmentary disorders,” she continued.

Dr. Yoo pointed to the filter’s broad-spectrum absorption profile. “It covers essentially the entire UVB and UVA range, with strong absorption peaks around 310 and 340 nanometers, which means it can meaningfully protect against both burning and deeper UVA1-driven photoaging.”

Photostability may also matter for formulators aiming for more robust performance under real-world use. “A major advantage of bemotrizinol is its photostability,” Dr. Yoo said. “Even after very high experimental UV doses, the molecule barely degrades, and it helps stabilize other filters like avobenzone.”

In practice, that means a sunscreen’s protection is more likely to stay close to the labeled SPF and UVA rating during real-world use, she added, “something that consumers and dermatologists would love to see given the recent media coverage worldwide about such discrepancies.”

Dr. Yoo further explained that available maximum-use pharmacokinetic data indicate minimal systemic exposure and low irritation potential. The data is reassuring, she shared: “in a 6% bemotrizinol formulation, systemic exposure in human volunteers was extremely low, often at or near the limit of quantification,” and “from an allergy and irritation standpoint, bemotrizinol has performed well in patch testing and post-marketing surveillance abroad.”

For formulators, she noted that the ingredient could widen available design options. “Right now in the U.S., we’re trying to engineer novel sun protection using a relatively old and dilapidated filter toolbox,” Dr. Yoo said. “Adding bemotrizinol to the monograph would let formulators hit higher UVA protection targets with fewer trade-offs in texture, so we can offer lighter, more elegant sunscreens without sacrificing science.”

“If bemotrizinol is ultimately granted GRASE status, it would be the first new U.S. sunscreen active in decades,” she added. “That’s not just a regulatory footnote—it means we can finally be on track to compete with our international counterparts, where photo-protection guidelines already rely on these newer molecules.”

AADA welcomes the proposal

In a statement issued today, the American Academy of Dermatology Association said it supports FDA’s move toward expanding sunscreen options for US consumers. “The American Academy of Dermatology Association applauds the Food and Drug Administration for taking the first steps in more than two decades to provide more safe and effective sunscreen options to the American public,” said Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD, president of the association.

The organization emphasized the ongoing burden of skin cancer in the United States and longstanding calls for broader access to modern sunscreen actives. Dr. Taylor noted that the United States “lags behind many other countries that have nearly twice as many approved sunscreen ingredients,” and reiterated the Academy’s recommendations for use of broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher when outdoors.

BaByliss Curl Secret vs NEW BaByliss Style Secret Air – What’s the Difference & Which One Should You Buy?

With the launch of the brand new BaByliss Style Secret Air, I have been reminded of how the original BaByliss Curl Secret was such a moment back in the day. It honestly felt like magic when it launched! If you’ve been with me for a while, you’ll remember how excited I was about automatic curlers when they first arrived. And judging from this blog’s analytics (yes, I see you all!), loads of you are still searching for the differences between the older BaByliss curlers.

The BaByliss Style Secret Air is very different from the old Curl Secret. So I wanted to give you the updated comparison you’re actually looking for. If you’re trying to decide which curling tool to buy right now, this should make life much easier!

Quick Summary: Curl Secret vs Style Secret Air

Here’s the top-line difference:

  • BaByliss Curl Secret – classic ceramic auto-curl chamber, super simple, beginner-friendly, gives consistent, polished curls.
  • BaByliss Style Secret Air – brand new airflow + rotating barrel technology, more styling options, gentler heat, and way more control over curl type.

Now let’s get into the detail, because they really are different tools.

BaByliss Curl Secret – The Classic Auto-Curler

BaByliss Curl Secret
BaByliss Curl Secret

I remember the first time I tried this – the sound it makes literally sucking your hair in(!) was terrifying at first, but it works. And once you get into a rhythm, it is genuinely so easy. Although if you aren’t careful, there can be the occasional heart-stopping moment where your hair gets trapped. It’s been a while since I’ve used mine, but I still have it in my stash.

How it works

You feed a section of hair into the chamber, it automatically wraps it around a heated ceramic barrel inside, then beeps when your curl is ready. The curl type depends on the timer setting you choose.

Why people love it

  • Really easy to use, even if you’re a total curling novice
  • Produces neat, even curls
  • Quick once you get going
  • Alternating curl direction makes it look more natural

What to keep in mind

  • Works best on short to medium-length hair
  • Not the most versatile – it’s mainly just curls
  • Can give that “all the curls look the same” finish unless you loosen them up afterwards
  • Uses only heat (no airflow), so still important to use heat protectant
  • Can sometime catch the hair if you overload it, or have tangles in your section

BaByliss Style Secret Air – The NEW 2025 Airflow Auto-Styler

BaByliss Style Secret Air
BaByliss Style Secret Air

This one is totally different, and honestly, it feels like the next generation of styling tools.

How it works

Instead of a chamber, it has a 25mm ceramic barrel that rotates while blowing controlled airflow around the hair. So it’s a mix between a curling tool and a hot-air styler.

Think of it as:
Airwrap meets auto-curler meets curling tong.

What’s new & exciting

  • 4 heat/airflow settings – you can go gentler or more powerful depending on your hair
  • 4 timer settings for different curl types
  • 3 rotation directions (much more control than Curl Secret)
  • You can create way more than just curls – waves, soft bends, volume, polished finishes

And the airflow makes styling feel more modern and lighter than the old heat-only approach.

Why it’s better for some people

  • More versatile – you’re not locked into one look
  • Better for medium to long hair
  • Airflow + heat can be slightly gentler on the hair
  • Great if you like softer, undone, modern waves rather than tight curls

This one is definitely more of a styling toolwhereas Curl Secret is specifically a curl maker.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Feature Curl Secret Style Secret Air
Technology Auto-curl chamber Rotating barrel + airflow
Styling options Curls only Curls, waves, volume, blow-dry finish
Heat/airflow settings 2 heat, 3 timer 4 heat/airflow, 4 timer, 3 direction
Hair suitability Best for short/medium Great for medium–long
Ease of use Easiest for beginners Slight learning curve
Hair health Heat only Heat + airflow (potentially gentler)
Best for Quick, uniform curls Versatile, modern styling

Which One Is Right for You? (Ree’s Recommendation)

Personally, I think the new BaByliss Style Secret Air is miles ahead of the Curl Secret, and you are far less likely to get your hair tangled in it. Plus it’s way more versatile.

Curl Secret is good if:

  • you just want quick curls with minimal effort
  • you’re not fussed about waves, texture or volume
  • you have shoulder-length or shorter hair

Choose Style Secret Air if…

  • you want the new technology and more styling options
  • you prefer softer, more modern looking waves
  • you have medium to long hair
  • you want more control over heat, curl direction and curl tightness
  • hair health is a priority for you

If you’re buying a tool today and you love a styled, salon-y finish, the Style Secret Air is the one I would get. LOOKFANTASTIC* currently has the best price.

Final Thoughts

The Curl Secret is still a great little curler, it does exactly what it set out to do, and as long as you use appropriately sized and completely tangle free sections, you should get along well with it. But the BaByliss Style Secret Air feels like the evolution of auto-curling technology, offering more options, more control, and a more modern finish.

If you’re updating your kit this year, the new Style Secret Air is the more forward-thinking choice and gives you much better styling variety for the money. In fact, it made it into my electricals gift guide this year! To see that, read: Best Electrical Beauty Gifts Christmas 2025 – Skincare Gadgets, Hair Tools & More.

FAQ: BaByliss Style Secret Air vs Curl Secret

What is the difference between the BaByliss Style Secret Air and the BaByliss Curl Secret?

The Style Secret Air uses a rotating ceramic barrel plus airflow to create curls, waves and volume, while the Curl Secret uses an enclosed chamber that simply heats the hair into a curl. The Style Secret Air is more versatile and allows more control over heat, direction and styling results.

Is the BaByliss Style Secret Air better for long hair?

Yes. The Style Secret Air works really well on medium to long hair because the open barrel design can handle longer sections more easily. The Curl Secret tends to work best on short to shoulder-length hair.

Is the BaByliss Style Secret Air easier to use than the Curl Secret?

Both are easy once you get the hang of them, but the Curl Secret is the quickest to master because it uses a simple curl chamber. The Style Secret Air has more settings and styling options, so it offers more control but takes slightly longer to get to know.

Does the Style Secret Air damage hair less?

It can be gentler than traditional curlers because it uses a mix of airflow and heat, and you can choose lower heat settings. As always, using a good heat protectant is essential to minimise damage.

Can the Style Secret Air create loose waves as well as curls?

Yes! This is one of the biggest advantages of the Style Secret Air. You can create soft waves, bouncy curls, blow-dry style volume or more defined curls just by adjusting the heat, airflow, timer and rotation settings.

Is the BaByliss Style Secret Air worth upgrading to if I already own the Curl Secret?

If you want more flexibility, softer waves, or a more modern tool that mimics salon airflow styling, then yes, the Style Secret Air is a worthwhile upgrade. If you only ever wear tight curls and love the simplicity of the Curl Secret, you may not need to switch.

What size curls does the BaByliss Style Secret Air create?

It uses a 25mm barrel, which gives you everything from loose, beachy bends to tighter curls depending on the timer and heat setting you choose.

Is the BaByliss Style Secret Air better than the Tymo Curl Pro?

I haven’t tested the Tymo Curl Pro myself, but based on the published specs and user reviews, the key difference is that the Style Secret Air uses a combination of heat and airflow to create curls, waves and volume, while the Tymo Curl Pro is a traditional auto-rotating curling iron. This means Style Secret Air is likely more versatile and potentially gentler on the hair, whereas Tymo Curl Pro focuses on quick, simple curls with direct heat. If you’re looking for a wider range of styles and a more modern styling mechanism, Style Secret Air will probably feel like the more advanced option.

In celebration of World Environment Day we wanted to share some of our favourite eco-friendly skincare swaps to inspire you to choose better for your family, your health and the environment.

As a brand, LYING has embraced values of sustainability – from how our ingredients are sourced to our processes, packaging and product development. We are forging a new path to become as green and eco-friendly as possible.

In our commitment to minimise our environmental impact, we continue to drive positive sustainable changes as we grow.

This includes:

  • Selecting recyclable materials for both internal and external packaging such as glass, aluminium and PCR wherever possible.

  • Choosing sustainably sourced materials for our beauty tools such as beechwood for our Body Gua Sha, sustainably sourced bamboo for our Garshana Dry Body Brush and teak wood and brass used to create our Kansa Wand.

  • Developing re-usable accessories such as our Bamboo Cleansing Cloth, Exfoliating Mitt and Tan Application Mitt.
  • We place great weight on the importance of ethically sourcing our natural ingredients and using processes that are as friendly to our bodies as they are to our environment.

  • Converting warehouse practices to paperless wherever possible including removal of packing slips and unnecessary use of paper/bubble wrap in customer packaging.

We all know that glass and aluminium are obvious recyclable materials, but one thing you may not be as familiar with is PCR. Post-consumer recycled packaging (PCR), uses materials that have been previously used by consumers and recycled into new packaging. The recycled plastic is cleaned, processed, and converted into new plastic resins, which are then used to create packaging materials like films, pouches, and bottles. Using PCR packaging supports reduced waste and lower environmental impact.

Lily Collins’ “Polished” Winter Glam Is the Best Holiday Inspo

0

Key Takeaways

  • Lily Collins got ready for a recent Tonight Show appearance with makeup artist Fiona Stiles.
  • The artist used a kit full of Kosas products, including a new favorite that’s launching in January.
  • Learn exactly how to get Collins’s soft and glamorous look.

Emily will be back in Paris (well, Rome) soon, and we’ll all be there with her! From the comfort of our couches while we tune into her adventures via our personal television sets, at least.

For now, though, Lily Collins is in New York. And we’re so happy to have her.

On Tuesday, December 9, Collins appeared on The Tonight Show to promote Season 5 of Emily in Paris. For the talk show moment, she worked with celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles, who used a lineup of go-to products from Kosas to get her client ready at the Plaza—and taught us exactly how to get the look.

Christopher Horne

Lily Collins’ Polished Glam

With her hair styled into a sleek, middle-parted bob (with one side tucked behind her ear!), Collins’ makeup was glamorous but unfussy. Her airbrushed skin was warmed with a touch of rosy blush, her lips were painted a warm pink shade, and her eyes—underneath those signature bold brows—stole the show with lush lashes, blurred liner, and a shimmery, wintery shadow look.

“I used a top-secret, brand new Kosas product that is launching on January 6th, just over her pupils in the center of her upper lid,” Stiles explains. “It added a bit of cool-toned, light-catching shimmer to the eyes. Very subtle but it added a touch of wintery frostiness. I can’t wait for everyone to be able to get their hands on this—it’s a first-of-its-kind formula that’s multi-use and safe for cheeks, eyes, body, etc.!” (Writer’s note: We can’t wait either.)

The Inspiration

Stiles exclusively tells Byrdie that Collins’s architectural Balenciaga gown springboarded their “timeless and sophisticated” makeup vision.

“I wanted to make sure the look didn’t read retro, so I went for modern, soft glamour,” she says. This included “gently sculpted eyes with a soft, smudgy barely-there flick and a soft rosy lip.”

Getty Images

Before she got sculpting, the artist had to perfect her canvas.

“Skin is always my first focus. I strive to make the skin look natural with gentle highlights and soft sheen. I was so excited to work with Kosas for this look, because their complexion category is excellent. I love using the Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation and Revealer Concealer, and the Cloud Set Powder makes the skin look flawless,” she adds. “The baked formula has a really lovely soft sheen to it that makes skin look just incredible. I used the new product mentioned above on her cheekbones and high points of the face under the foundation to add a bit of an ethereal glow. I like using it on bare skin under makeup because it blurs beautifully and seamlessly into the foundation that way.”

How to Get the Look

Stiles’ best tip for getting a similar look is to “keep the eyeliner soft.” Hard lines will change the mood.

“A bit of smudgy definition makes it less severe while retaining the sophistication,” she says.

After prepping the skin but before applying foundation, she used her fingers to apply that top-secret new product on the bridge of Collins’ nose and high points of the face “to create soft ethereal highlights.” Then, she used the Revealer Foundation in shade 120, adding Revealer Concealer in 1.5C where needed and Revealer Extra Bright Color Corrector in the shade Magic to brighten.

Christopher Horne

Then, she powdered the actor’s skin with Cloud Set in Breezy and added Blush is Life in Swoon for a soft flush of color on the cheeks.

“To bring just a hint of warmth to the face, I used a big fluffy brush and very lightly swept The Sun Show bronzer to just the outer edges of Lily’s face, adding just a touch under the cheekbones for definition,” she added. A spritz of Cloud Set Setting Mist set the makeup.

Next: those eyes and brows.

“Lily has iconic brows and I don’t have to do much to them, but I filled in any gaps with the Brow Pop Nano in Brown Black and set them with Air Brow in Clear,” says Stiles. “I used the Soulgazer Eyeliner in Hypnotize to tightline her lashes and pushed the liner into the lash line on top to define the further. A bit of buffed out Soulgazer Eyeliner in Orbit gave the eyes a slightly elongated feeling and a few coats of Soulgazer Mascara gave her lashes length and volume.”

The lip combo was just one product this time: Weightless Lip Color in Turned On, which Stiles describes as “a beautiful warm, pinkish brown.”

And lastly? “My final finishing touch is always to check the brow and the lips and add a little loose powder where needed.”

Nice to meet you, Lily in Manhattan.

How Energy Drinks Can Lead to Stroke

0

It seems innocent enough to sip on an energy drink when you’re feeling wiped. But a surprising new case study just linked the common habit to stroke.

There’s a major caveat of this BMJ Case Reports paper to point out upfront—namely that the patient regularly tossed back eight energy drinks a day. Still, it probably didn’t occur to him that this habit could give him a stroke.

But the findings are raising all kinds of questions about the link between energy drinks and stroke, and if your health might be at risk if you sip one of these a day. With that in mind, we tapped a neurologist, cardiologist, and toxicologist to break down how energy drinks can lead to a stroke, plus the safest way to approach these drinks going forward.

The case report starts out as a medical mystery.

As the report explains, the patient was a “normally fit and well” man in his 50s who went to the hospital after developing weakness on his left side, numbness, and clumsiness. An MRI confirmed that he suffered an ischemic stroke, which happens when a blood clot blocks an artery that supplies oxygen and nutrients to the brain.

His blood pressure was sky-high when he was admitted—254/150 mm Hg. Normal blood pressure is considered less than 120/80 mm Hg; anything higher than 180/120 mm Hg is a hypertensive emergency, according to the American Heart Association (AHA), and he was well above that.

The man spent 72 hours in the hospital, where doctors were able to get his blood pressure down. But after he was released, his blood pressure shot back up and stayed high, even after doctors put him on five different medications. It wasn’t until the man was questioned about his diet that doctors discovered that he regularly drank eight cans of energy drinks, which contained 160 milligrams of caffeine each. Once he stopped having those drinks, his blood pressure normalized and he was able to get off the medications.

The case report co-authors stressed that the findings raise the need for greater public awareness that you can, in fact, have a stroke from energy drinks.

How can energy drinks lead to a stroke?

The caffeine in these drinks is definitely a factor, Carolyn A. Cronin, MD, PhD, division chief of vascular neurology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, tells SELF. “Energy drinks contain high doses of caffeine, and sometimes other agents [like taurine] as well, that can increase blood pressure,” she explains. “Elevated blood pressure causes damage to blood vessels throughout the body, but the brain is particularly susceptible.”

How to Use The Skincare Makeup System In Your Beauty Routine

0

We asked our employees how they use our Skincare Makeup System and how it fits into their makeup routine. Our 3-step system is designed to create a flawless, long-lasting and good-for-the-skin foundation base. First, start with Smooth Affair Brightening Face Primer to help makeup last longer and go on smoother. Then add coverage and sun protection with our #1 best-selling PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation. Finally, spritz your complexion with Pommisst Hydration Spray to help set your minerals and deliver antioxidant protection.

How to Use The Skincare Makeup System: Sami’s Routine

Sami, our Sales Operations Coordinator, shares how she uses our Skincare Makeup System:

I’ve been a PurePressed Base user since 2015 and I don’t see myself straying anytime soon (or, ever!). Whether I am getting ready for work, a date night, or some fun in the sun, I don’t leave my house without applying. I love that PurePressed Base is a 4in1 product: concealer, foundation, sunscreen and skincare. Not to mention, it is so easy and quick to apply!

Every morning after completing my daily skincare routine, I prime my skin with Smooth Affair Brightening Face Primer. Aside from minimizing the appearance of pores and fine lines, it truly is the best base for my pressed powder and allows my makeup to last throughout the day.

I always use The Handi Brush with my PurePressed Base in Radiant for a full-face application, followed by the Sculpting Brush for targeted camouflaging and lastly the Flocked Sponge for added coverage under my eyes. Of course, I must end with a few (or five!) spritzes of my favorite Hydration SprayPOTATOES. Not only is the scent so refreshing, but it is designed to set the minerals and provide a smooth, skin-like finish.

After applying my foundationI like to add a little color back to my skin. Lately my go-to combo has been the Glow Time Bronzer and Blush Sticks. Fervor provides the perfect amount of color to the apples of my cheeks and Scorch adds a beautiful, light contour.

I always find myself reaching for the PureBrow Precision Pencil in Dark Brown. I love this brow pencil because it allows me to draw in a few hair-like strokes in sparse areas. Continuing with eyes, I apply a few swipes of Beyond Lash Mascara and lastly, I grab my favorite HydroPure Hyaluronic Acid Lip Gloss in Kir Royale to apply on my lips. This entire look takes me no longer than 5 minutes to complete in the morning and leaves me feeling like an elevated version of myself.

How to Use The Skincare Makeup System: Erica’s Routine

Next, we asked Erica, our Sr. Manager of Brand Marketing and E-Commerce, to share how she uses our Skincare Makeup System in her routine:

The Skincare Makeup System is part of my everyday makeup routine. Throughout my years of using these products together, I have found the perfect combination to give me a healthy, natural glow!

After I cleanse and moisturizeI begin with Smooth Affair Illuminating Glow Face Primer. This is the best primer of all time because it gives the most natural, subtle glow while also smoothing the appearance of my afterres. Honestly, I use this by itself for truly nomakeup makeup days. Then, I apply HydroPure Tinted Serum in the shade Medium 4. This is the perfect bridge between skincare and makeup. It hydrates my skin and creates the best blurringskin tone-evening base for my foundation.

Next, I apply the #1 best-selling PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation. The combination between the dewy, skincare-infused HydroPure Tinted Serum and the light-weight mineral powder of PurePressed Base provides a natural, glowy (but not shiny), healthy look. The combination between HydroPure Tinted Serum and PurePressed Base is truly magic (not to sound dramatic, but YESIT’S TRUE!) It looks like you have no makeup on, in the best way possible.

Then to set my whole look and to bring out even more hydrated radiance to my complexionI use POMMISST Hydration Spray. The Hydration Spray makes PurePressed Base match my skin even more perfectly and makes my makeup last all day long.

This routine and combination of products works for all skin tones, types and preferences. This is my holy grail, and I love to share it with as many people as possible!

How to Trim and Cut Curly Hair from Home

0

Would you like to trim or cut curly hair from home but are not sure where to start? As much as it is always advisable to get it done by a hair professional, there are many reasons you may opt to do it yourself.

Cutting curly hair is different from cutting straight hair. Some hair stylists may not know how to cut curly hair and leave you with an uneven look. If you have experienced this before, then you know how frustrating it can be. Hair stylists who specialize in curly hair also tend to charge more which can make a salon trip an expensive affair if you are on a tight budget.

Whatever your reason might be, here are some tips on how to trim or cut your curly hair from home.

Trim vs Haircut, What Is The Difference?

Before we get into more details on how to cut curly hair, you need to understand the difference between a trim and a cut. A haircut refers to cutting hair for styling purposes. It involves the removal of hair in a specific pattern to achieve a specific style. Here are some hairstyle ideas for curly hair if you need some inspiration.

On the other hand, a trim is done for maintenance and only an inch or two of hair is cut off. It’s done to maintain the current hairstyle and cut off split ends. A trim every three months or so keeps the hair looking vibrant and healthy.

Is It Better To Cut Curly Hair Wet Or Dry?

As a beginner, it is better to cut curly hair dry. Unlike straight hair, curly hair behaves differently depending on whether it is wet or dry. As a result, cutting wet curly hair might lead to an uneven cut since you can easily cut off more than you intended to.

What Cut Is Better For Curly Hair?

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to curly hair. The best cut depends on the shape of your face and the type of curls you have. That said, the most common types of cuts are a shoulder-length cut, a bob cut, and a layered cut.

Should Curly hair be cut in Layers?

Cutting curly hair in layers gives a lighter more defined look. The outcome of layering varies depending on the type of curls, type of cut, and hair density. All in all, the decision to cut your hair in layers depends on your personal preferences and the style you want to achieve.

Tips on How To Cut Curly Hair At Home

You’re probably hesitant about cutting your curly hair at home. I mean, what if you mess up? What if you end up with a horrendous look? Well, here are a few tips that will help you out.

1. Schedule Time To Cut Your Hair

First things first, you need to set aside a reasonable amount of time to cut or trim your hair. Choose a time slot that will work for you. It could be one hour or more depending on the length and density of your hair.

Take your time. Once you get used to it, you’ll take less time. However, as a start, you need all the time you can get. Allocating a time slot will allow you to concentrate and avoid feeling rushed.

In addition, most people have two or three different curl patterns on different parts of the head. Cutting them all the same length when wet will lead to an undesirable outcome when the hair is dry.

If you want to wash your hair before trimming it, ensure that it is completely dry before you get started.

2. Get Your Hair Tools Ready

Gather everything you’ll need for this process. It’s always good to be prepared. For example, check whether you have a pair of sharp scissors. If you’re in a position to, you can even purchase a pair of professional shears. This post offers some good suggestions on scissors you can buy. Just ensure all your tools are ready.

3. Cut In Small Bits

When you start trimming, cut off small bits at a time. Start with half an inch all around. Remember, if you don’t like the outcome, you can always cut a bit more later. However, if you cut too much, you’ll have to wait longer for the hair to grow back.

Tools you Need To Cut Curly Hair

You will need the following tools to cut your hair:

  • Two mirrors
  • A brush or comb
  • A pair of hair scissors

1. Two mirrors

Why do you need two mirrors? Well, you need to see the second mirror to see the back of your head. Since most of you already have a wall mirror, the second one can simply be a compact mirror. It will help you see the progress of your haircut at the back of your head so you end up with a finished look that you are happy with.

2. A Comb And Hairbrush

There are different types of combs and hairbrushes for different purposes as seen in this hairbrush guide. To cut your curly hair, you’ll only need a comb or brush that you can use to part your hair into small sections.

3. A Pair Of Hair Scissors

Ensure you have a pair of sharp scissors at hand. The sharper the hair scissors, the cleaner the cut will be. Don’t use the ones that you cut fabric or paper with. We recommend getting a pair of scissors that are designed for cutting hair.

How to Trim Your Hair from Home – Step By Step

Here are the steps to follow when trimming your curly hair from home.

Step One: Get Your Hair Ready

As we mentioned earlier, we’ll be working with dry hair. This is the best option for beginners. Style your hair the way you normally wear it. This will give you a clear picture of what you want to achieve.

Cut curly Hair

Step Two: Start with the Front

Start by trimming the front part. This includes the bangs. Take a small section of hair, about half an inch, and comb it to the front. Cut off about half an inch. Take another small section and repeat the same until you’re done with the front side.

Alternatively, you can pick out each curl and trim off the split ends that are sticking out.

Step Three: Work on the Back

Now that you’re done with the front part, proceed with trimming the back section. This can be tricky since you can’t see what you’re doing.

If your hair is long enough, tilt your head slightly to the left to have a better view. Next, work with one-inch sections of hair. Brush them to the front and cut off half an inch. You’ll need your contact mirror to constantly monitor your progress. Once you’re halfway done, tilt your head to the right side to get the other half done.

For shorter hair, brush your sections upwards for you to see what you’re cutting. You might need to tilt your head forward.

Remember, patience is key. Work in small sections until you’re done. If your arms get tired, you can take a break and pick up where you left off. Just make sure you know where you stopped.

Step Four: Even things out

Once you finish your entire head, go ahead and trim the few curls that are out of place. Keep in mind that we’re doing small bits at a time. Fluff out your hair and the curls settle back to their place.

It is important to note that your hair might look a bit strange at first. Curls behave differently after being cut. Some of them get distressed and might take a day or two to return to their original form.

What Next After Trimming Your Hair?

If you’re not satisfied and feel that you need to trim off a bit more, don’t do it immediately. Give your hair two to three days. By this time, your curls will have resumed their regular curl pattern and you’ll have a clear picture of the outcome of your trim. This is when you can trim off another half an inch or so if you’re still not satisfied with your initial trim.

Cut curly Hair

Once you’re satisfied with the outcome, it is time to style your hair. You can even switch things up by adding hair extensions and using a loop brush like this one to blend them in with your hair. The possibilities are endless.

Conclusion

Giving your hair a trim at home is not complicated. All you need is a good pair of scissors, a brush, and a little patience. You can do it!

Clean & Effortless Beauty – 100% PURE

0

In a world where elaborate makeup tutorials dominate social media, there’s a refreshing counter-movement gaining momentum: the no-makeup makeup look. This approach to beauty celebrates your natural features while subtly enhancing them, creating that enviable “I woke up like this” appearance. The clean girl makeup aesthetic has transformed from a fleeting trend into a timeless approach to beauty, perfectly aligning with the skinimalism beauty trend that prioritizes skin health over heavy coverage.

The beauty of no-makeup makeup lies in its versatility and accessibility. Whether you’re running errands, attending a business meeting, or enjoying brunch with friends, this look adapts to any occasion while maintaining an air of effortless sophistication. It’s about looking like the best version of yourself, not a different person entirely.

Understanding the No-Makeup Makeup Philosophy

The no-makeup makeup look isn’t about avoiding cosmetics altogether; it’s about strategic application and choosing products that work with your skin rather than sitting on top of it. This approach celebrates individual beauty, enhancing what you naturally have instead of concealing it. The goal is to look fresh, healthy, and radiant, as if you’ve just returned from a restorative vacation or emerged from a particularly good night’s sleep.

This minimalist approach to beauty aligns perfectly with modern lifestyles. We’re busier than ever, more conscious about what we put on our skin, and increasingly aware that true beauty comes from confidence and health rather than layers of product. The clean girl makeup aesthetic embodies this shift, promoting a sustainable, time-efficient beauty routine that doesn’t compromise on results.

The Psychology Behind Effortless Beauty

There’s something inherently confident about the no-makeup makeup look. It suggests you’re comfortable in your skin, that you don’t need to hide behind heavy foundation or dramatic colors. This psychological aspect makes the look particularly powerful in professional settings and daily life, where authenticity is increasingly valued. The skinimalism beauty trend reflects our collective desire for transparency and genuineness in all aspects of life, including our beauty routines.

Essential Elements of the Clean Girl Aesthetic

Achieving the perfect no-makeup makeup look starts with understanding its key components. First and foremost is skin that appears naturally luminous. This doesn’t mean perfect skin, but rather skin that looks healthy and cared for. The second element is subtle definition—just enough to enhance your features without obvious makeup lines or harsh contrasts. Finally, there’s the element of freshness, that dewy, just-moisturized appearance that suggests youth and vitality.

Skin Preparation: The Foundation of Natural Beauty

Before applying any makeup, proper skin preparation is crucial. Start with a gentle cleanser to create a clean canvas, followed by a lightweight moisturizer that suits your skin type. Allow the moisturizer to fully absorb—this patience pays off in how smoothly your makeup applies. Consider using a hydrating primer if your skin tends toward dryness, or a mattifying primer in your T-zone if you’re prone to oiliness. The key is creating a smooth, balanced base that allows your natural skin texture to shine through.

Creating Your No-Makeup Makeup Base

The foundation of any successful no-makeup makeup look is, ironically, the foundation itself—or rather, the strategic use of it. The Fruit Pigmented® 2nd Skin Foundation exemplifies the perfect base product for this aesthetic. Its lightweight formula provides just enough coverage to even out skin tone while allowing your natural skin to show through. The fruit pigments deliver color that looks like it comes from within, avoiding the mask-like effect of traditional foundations.

Application Techniques for Natural Coverage

When applying the Fruit Pigmented® 2nd Skin Foundationless is definitely more. Start with a small amount—you can always build coverage where needed. Use your fingers to warm the product and press it into your skin, focusing on the center of your face where you typically need the most coverage. Blend outward with patting motions rather than rubbing, which can disturb the product and create streaks. The warmth of your fingers helps the foundation meld with your skin, creating that second-skin effect that’s essential to the no-makeup makeup look.

Spot Concealing Without the Cake

Rather than applying concealer all over, use your foundation strategically for spot coverage. Dab a tiny amount directly onto blemishes or areas of discoloration, then gently pat with your ring finger to blend the edges. This targeted approach maintains the overall natural appearance while addressing specific concerns. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s enhancement.

Adding Natural Flush and Dimension

The Fruit Pigmented® Lip & Cheek Tint is your secret weapon for achieving that natural flush that makes you look alive and healthy. This multitasking product embodies the efficiency of the skinimalism beauty trend, serving double duty to create cohesion in your look. The key to success with this product is building slowly and blending thoroughly.

Mastering the Art of Natural Cheek Color

Apply the Fruit Pigmented® Lip & Cheek Tint to the apples of your cheeks—the areas that naturally flush when you smile. Start with the tiniest amount, tapping it onto your skin with your fingertips, then blend in circular motions. The placement should mimic where you naturally blush, typically starting at the apples and sweeping slightly upward toward your temples. This creates a lifting effect that suggests youth and vitality.

For an even more natural effect, apply the tint before your foundation in areas where you want a subtle flush. This technique, known as underpainting, creates color that appears to come from beneath the skin rather than sitting on top. It’s a professional trick that perfectly captures the clean girl makeup aesthetic.

Defining Features Without Drama

Eye definition in no-makeup makeup is about enhancement, not transformation. The Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara provides just the right amount of definition without the spider-lash effect that screams “I’m wearing mascara!” Focus on the roots of your lashes, wiggling the wand to deposit color there, then sweep through to the tips just once. This technique creates the illusion of naturally thick lashes rather than obviously coated ones.

The One-Coat Rule

Resist the urge to apply multiple coats of mascara. The no-makeup makeup look thrives on restraint. One coat of the Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara is sufficient to define and separate lashes while maintaining that effortless appearance. If you feel you need more impact, focus on tightlining—using a dark eyeshadow or eyeliner to fill in the spaces between your lashes at the root. This creates definition without obvious makeup.

Setting Everything Naturally

The Bamboo Blur Powder is essential for setting your no-makeup makeup look without adding coverage or texture. This translucent powder uses bamboo extract to absorb excess oil while maintaining your skin’s natural luminosity. The key is using it sparingly and strategically—only in areas where you tend to get shiny, typically the T-zone.

The Press and Roll Technique

Instead of dusting powder all over your face, which can create a flat, matte finish that contradicts the fresh aesthetic, use the press and roll technique. Take a small fluffy brush, pick up a tiny amount of Bamboo Blur Powdertap off excess, then gently press and roll the brush on areas that need setting. This method sets your makeup without disturbing the natural finish you’ve carefully created.

The Perfect Natural Lip

Lips in the no-makeup makeup look should appear naturally healthy and hydrated. The Fruit Pigmented® Lip Glaze provides the perfect finish—not too matte, not too glossy, just naturally lustrous. Choose a shade close to your natural lip color or go for a clear gloss for the ultimate in natural beauty. The fruit pigments in this formula ensure that even tinted options look like an enhanced version of your natural lip color rather than applied lipstick.

Creating Effortless Lip Perfection

Apply the Fruit Pigmented® Lip Glaze from the center of your lips outward, using your finger for the most natural application. This creates a gradient effect that mimics naturally flushed lips. For added dimension without obvious makeup, you can layer the Fruit Pigmented® Lip & Cheek Tint underneath the glaze, concentrating the color in the center of your lips and blending outward.

Time-Saving Tips for Busy Mornings

The beauty of the no-makeup makeup routine is its efficiency. Once mastered, this entire look can be achieved in under ten minutes. Organize your products in the order you’ll use them. Keep your Fruit Pigmented® 2nd Skin Foundation, Fruit Pigmented® Lip & Cheek Tintand other essentials in a small bag so you’re not searching through drawers each morning.

Consider creating a capsule makeup collection—just the essentials for your no-makeup makeup look. This aligns with the skinimalism beauty trend and prevents decision fatigue. When you have fewer products to choose from, your routine becomes automatic, allowing you to achieve that effortless look truly effortlessly.

Adapting the Look for Different Occasions

While the no-makeup makeup look is inherently versatile, small adjustments can make it appropriate for various settings. For work, ensure your Bamboo Blur Powder is well-applied to maintain a professional, non-shiny appearance throughout the day. For evening events, add a tiny bit more Fruit Pigmented® Lip & Cheek Tint and an extra sweep of Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara to your outer lashes for subtle definition.

Seasonal Adjustments

The clean girl makeup aesthetic adapts beautifully to seasonal changes. In summer, focus on the Bamboo Blur Powder to combat humidity-induced shine while keeping everything else minimal. In winter, you might need slightly more Fruit Pigmented® 2nd Skin Foundation to combat dryness and redness from cold weather. The Fruit Pigmented® Lip Glaze becomes especially important in colder months to prevent chapped-looking lips.

Maintaining the Look Throughout the Day

The no-makeup makeup look should evolve naturally throughout the day. Rather than touching up constantly, embrace the way your skin’s natural oils blend with the products. If you need to refresh, gently blot with a tissue (don’t rub), then lightly press a tiny amount of Bamboo Blur Powder where needed. Reapply Fruit Pigmented® Lip Glaze as desired—this is the one product you can freely reapply without risking the natural aesthetic.

Conclusion

The no-makeup makeup look represents more than just a beauty trend—it’s a philosophy that celebrates natural beauty while acknowledging that a little enhancement never hurts. By mastering this approach with products like the Fruit Pigmented® 2nd Skin Foundation, Fruit Pigmented® Lip & Cheek Tintand others in the 100% PURE collection, you’re not just simplifying your beauty routine; you’re embracing a lifestyle that values authenticity, health, and natural radiance. The clean girl makeup aesthetic and skinimalism beauty trend aren’t going anywhere because they represent what modern beauty should be: effortless, healthy, and uniquely you.

Try “Snowflake Shadow” for an Ethereal Winter Makeup Look

0

Key Takeaways

  • “Snowflake Shadow” is sheer, shimmery, and on everyone’s winter makeup mood board.
  • To get the look, all you need is an icy shimmery eyeshadow.

I live in Minnesota, and so far this winter it has been snowing nonstop. This is a good thing (I’d rather it be cold and snowy than just cold) made even better by the fact that the snow has been light and fluffy, easy to shovel, and ultimately very pretty.

I might have to stay inside most of the time, but the view out my window is—what do they call it in “Let it Snow,” again?—delightful. So delightful, in fact, that it’s inspired the name of my current favorite makeup look. The winter glam forecast is in, and it’s going to be all “Snowflake Shadow,” all season long.

The Trend

Snowflake Shadow is a sheer, shimmery eyeshadow look reminiscent of a hundred (a thousand? they’re hard to quantify) tiny snowflakes resting on your lids. This year’s take on Fairy Dust Eyeshadow, it’s super soft and ethereal, the eyeshadow equivalent of the final performance in Ice Princessminus when she falls.

@paintedbyesther/Instagram

Donni Davy, Euphoria’s makeup head and founder of Half Magic Beauty, called the look “grown up” while previously chatting with Byrdie.

“By grown-up I mean chic, non-chunky, highly shimmery ‘glitter’ on the eyelids,” she explained. Think “a magical veil of diamonds on your eyelids.” Or snowflakes, obviously. They’re nature’s diamonds, aside from actual diamonds.

We’ve seen this look showing up on red carpets recently, as well as in basically every celebrity’s holiday party Instagram posts. It’s very pop star (imagine how it gleams under the stage lights!) but could look just as at home when worn to your cookie exchange. ‘Tis the season, after all.

The most important aspects of Snowflake Shadow is its lack of opacity and high percentage of teeny tiny glitter pigments, which give it a sort of slick, wet look. Cream-based shadows often work best in this situation, though the right powder will do just fine.

How to Get the Look

Snowflake Shadow is super easy to do yourself. You only need one really good shadow (though there’s no harm in building a collection) and a vision (of sugarplums, specifically).

@gracemariaellington/Instagram

When she created the gorgeous Snowflake Shadow look on Havana Rose Liu you see at the top of this story, makeup artist Misha Shahzada’s wanted to compliment the actor’s silver dress with fresh makeup that included a little pop of “something.”

“The goal was to create a texture that is transparent and glowy,” she tells Byrdie. “With that being said, all the products used were cream based and extremely sheer/buildable formulas. To add more of a pop, I added the slightest amount of loose fine pigment to the inner corners of the eye.”

@misha212/Instagram

As for the rest of your glam?

“It’s important to add that skin prep is critical in achieving this overall look, as it helps create a glow from within,” Shahzada adds. “Avoid matte textures, and use a sheer foundation (such as the Victoria Beckham Beauty) and only apply translucent powder to the T-Zone, so the rest of the face stays dimensional. Lastly, keep everything diffused, avoiding any harsh lines.”

Snow pretty.
