How GLP-1s Are Quietly Reshaping Gym Culture

If you happen to sit next to Mima Mendoza on a train or stand behind her in a checkout line, you might get an earful about the benefits of lifting weights. “I’ve become like the person at the train station saying, ‘Have you heard the word of God recently?’ Except I’m like, ‘Have you thought of strength training recently?’” she tells SELF.

The 34-year-old from Severna Park, Maryland, got serious about lifting in 2024, around the time her doctor prescribed the GLP-1 medication Zepbound to support her weight-loss efforts. “I wanted to sustain this weight loss long term, and I wanted to manage metabolic illnesses like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure that I was genetically predisposed to, and the answer to that was really building muscle,” she says.

Mendoza is one of many people to have taken to the weight room shortly after starting a GLP-1 medication. And this trend seems to be impacting gyms across the country. Between 2024 and 2025 use of free-weight equipment saw a marked increase in US gyms, with members 6.7% more likely to use dumbbells, 3.8% more likely to use barbells, and 3.6% more likely to use kettlebells, according to a forthcoming report from the Health & Fitness Association, a fitness-industry trade organization. Compared with 2021 (the year Wegovy got FDA approval) dumbbell use is up 28%.

“Available data suggest that the growing interest in strength training is part of a structural, long-term trend, which in part is accelerated by GLP-1s’ increasing popularity,” Anton Severin, vice president of research at the Health & Fitness Association, tells SELF.

It’s important to note that weight-loss medications are not the only thing at play here. Trends around longevity and functional strength were already pushing more people toward resistance training, Severin says, but GLP-1s added a clinical urgency because they’re associated with a loss of lean muscle mass that strength training can help mitigate.

Why strength training is nonnegotiable on a GLP-1

To get a little more specific, any form of weight loss—whether it’s via diet, surgery, or medication—will lead to some muscle loss, Jyotsna Ghosh, MD, an obesity medicine physician at Johns Hopkins Medicine, tells SELF. “The most protective things we can do to prevent a higher percentage of muscle-mass reduction are eating enough protein and resistance training consistently,” she says.

For Weight Loss, Variety In Your Diet May Be Overrated

Dietitians regularly talk up the importance of having variety in your diet to make sure you hit your nutritional needs. But new research suggests that’s actually not helpful—at least, not when you’re trying to lose weight.

The study, which was published in the journal Health Psychologymakes a strong case for sticking with the same meals when you’re on a weight-loss journey. If constantly thinking up new meals is a stressor for you, this may sound like good news.

“While this approach isn’t for everything and isn’t necessarily ideal for the long-haul, for those who are content to eat the same things for a few days in a row or having some go-to meals and snacks to rely on, it can simplify eating healthy, balanced meals that support your weight management goals,” Jessica Cording, RD, the author of The Little Book of Game-Changerstells SELF.

But the findings also don’t mean you’re screwed in the weight loss department if you prefer to mix things up in your diet. Here’s why.

The study dove into a mix of dietary patterns.

For the study, researchers analyzed data from food logs collected from 112 people with overweight or obesity who were enrolled in a structured behavioral weight loss program. The participants were asked to track their food in an app, and to have weigh-ins on a wireless scale.

The researchers specifically focused on the first 12 weeks of the program, which is when participants are usually the most into tracking their food intake, and measured how routine-oriented the participants’ diets were. They did this in two ways: They looked at the participants’ caloric stability which is how much their daily calories fluctuated from day-to-day and between weekdays and weekends. The researchers also dove into how repetitive the participants’ diets were, looking at how often people logged the same meals and snacks over time.

After crunching the data, the researchers discovered that people who stuck with a diet that was low in variety lost an average of 5.9% of their body weight compared to the 4.3% lost by people who mixed up their diets more. Having a greater calorie consistency was linked to better weight loss results. Specifically, for every 100-calorie increase in fluctuation between days, the participants’ weight loss dropped by about 0.6% during the 12-week period.

Based on all of this, the researchers concluded that lower variety in your diet and maintaining a steady calorie intake may help people create sustainable habits to support weight loss. “The conventional wisdom around dieting says that you should incorporate a lot of different foods to avoid getting bored and that you should splurge on the weekends or special occasions so that you don’t feel as deprived,” Charlotte Hagerman, PhD, study co-author and researcher at Oregon Research Institute, tells SELF. “However, this contradicts research showing that consistency makes your behavior more habitual—that is, more automatic and effortless.”

First, a refresher: What exactly is perimenopause?

More precisely, perimenopause is “the period of time leading up to the end of your menstrual cycles,” Melissa Groves Azzaro, RDN (a.k.a. the “Hormone Dietitian”), a practitioner who specializes in women’s health issues like PCOS and perimenopause, tells SELF. While menopause occurs around age 52 on average, your body really sets the stage around eight to 10 years before that as your ovaries start to produce less of the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone.

Perimenopause symptoms tend to appear in your mid-to-late 40s but can emerge as early as your mid-30s or as late as your mid-50s. In the beginning, you might see your cycles becoming shorter. “If you were typically a 28-day cycler and regular on the dot, you might notice them coming every 26 days or every 25 days,” Azzaro says, as an example. You could also experience more pain or heavier bleeding—a little like puberty in reverse.

Then, as perimenopause advances, your cycles will become decidedly more erratic. “You’ll notice a 28-day cycle, followed by a 15-day cycle, followed by a 60-day cycle,” Azzaro says. Ultimately, you’ll start skipping cycles entirely—“so that’s when you might go 60 days or 90 days between periods.”

Because estrogen naturally acts as an appetite suppressant by inhibiting hunger cues, it’s this specific hormonal shift that’s responsible for appetite changes during perimenopause, according to Dr. Pessah-Pollack.

I think most makeup wearers can relate when I say my default eyeliner shade is always some take on black or brown. Maybe I’ll do charcoal on a really wild day. I even have a couple of shades of blue and purple waiting in the wings in case I want to create colorful… well… wings. But red? I’m reluctant to put it lightly. Or at least I was until I saw Zendaya making it look like a new neutral.

Zendaya has been unsurprisingly killing it with the beauty and fashion moments as she promotes her new movie, The Drama. And while she’s been looking like a one-woman bridal fashion show for many of the appearances, she took a glamour-goth turn for the Rome premiere, wearing a black Giorgio Armani Privé gown previously worn by Cate Blanchett. (Something borrowed. Get it? Because the movie is about a wedding?)

The dress definitely called for some badass makeup, but instead of the bold, black liner you might expect, makeup artist Nikki Wolff went with red tones that really vibed with the burgundy backdrop at the event. Once you get past her bangs, very much intentionally styled by Ursula Stephen to fall in front of her eyes, Zendaya’s lids are covered in a smoky wash of fiery color with a seamless, shimmery blend.
