Mikaela Shiffrin’s ‘Back Abs,’ Explained

0

When Alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin casually dropped a video showing what she jokingly called her “back abs,” the internet predictably lost its collective mind. The clip shows etched lines and definition across her upper and lower back that look strikingly similar to abdominal muscles, but on the other side of her body.

“I wish I had more of them in my front, honestly,” Shiffrin told NBC Connecticut. “I didn’t know that that’s what my back looks like. I don’t know how you get that. I don’t really want it.”

Naturally, that sparked a new fitness fixation: Are back abs actually a thing? And if so, can regular people get them too? Short answer: Kind of, yes. But there’s more nuance than a viral TikTok clip suggests.

What are back abs?

They’re beyond having a toned back. “Back abs refer to the visible muscle definition and aesthetic of the posterior chain, particularly the muscles of the back and core that contribute to the overall V-shape appearance,” says Juan Ball, CPT, a certified personal trainer with Bay Club tells SELF. “The muscles doing the heavy visual lifting include the lower trapezius, rhomboids, and erector spinae—plus help from the lats and deep core stabilizers.”

This group of muscles shapes your back from your shoulder blades down to your lower spine.

Together, they can create an abdomen aesthetic—grooves, shadows, and contours that resemble the segmented look of a six-pack on the front of the body. In elite athletes, those details become even more pronounced given their intense training.

“In the case of athletes like Mikaela Shiffrin, back abs are formed through rigorous training that combines strength training, sport-specific movements, and a low body fat percentage,” Ball explains. A sport like Alpine skiing requires strong posterior engagement (the backside of your body), and constant core engagement.

So while back abs isn’t an official term, it’s a catchy way to describe visible back-muscle definition.

Can non-athletes develop back abs?

“Achieving back abs can be more challenging for the average person compared to developing front abs,” Ball says. One big factor: visibility depends largely on overall body fat percentage. Lower body fat allows muscle definition to show more clearly, but that level isn’t always attainable, healthy or sustainable for everyone.

The vibes are officially immaculate in the world of celebrity couples. Megan Thee Stallion just proved she is the ultimate partner by throwing a beautiful Birthday Party for Klay Thompson that has the entire internet swooning. On February 8, 2026, the Houston Hottie took to social media to share a glimpse into the celebration, simply captioning the gorgeous photos with “Klay Day ⚓️💙” and showing us all what real love looks like.

Since these two first went public, they have been giving us a front row seat to a very wholesome and intentional romance. Whether they are courtside or just chilling at home, Megan and Klay have been sharing special moments in their relationship that feel incredibly grounded. We saw them get cozy over the recent winter break, and it was so sweet to see Megan spending the holidays with his family. It is clear that she has truly integrated into his world, and this latest celebration was just the cherry on top.

The Birthday Party for Klay Thompson was a star studded yet intimate affair, filled with his closest friends and loved ones. Megan really went all out to make sure her man felt special, curating a night that reflected his personality and their shared joy. From the nautical themed decor mentioned in her caption to the heartfelt laughter caught in the background of the photos, the event was a masterclass in how to celebrate your person.

Megan is exactly who she thinks she is: a hardworking mogul who still makes time to pour love into those who matter most. She has been a force since we were first introduced to her, and seeing her this happy is the content we all deserve. By hosting a Birthday Party for Klay Thompson that brought together all his favorite people, she showed that her commitment to him is just as strong as her commitment to her career.

In an industry where things can often feel performative, Megan and Klay feel like the real deal. They are constantly supporting each other’s wins and being there for the quiet moments too. We love seeing our favorite Stallion win in love just as much as she wins on the charts. Cheers to Klay on his big day and to Megan for being the queen of birthday surprises!

Best New Peptide Serum Under $30

0

Ingredient marketing is loud right now. Peptides on every label, collagen promises everywhere, and we’re all getting savvier about what’s substance versus what’s spin. So when I picked up the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Micro-Collagen Firming Serum for €15.55 at El Corte Inglés, I knew what I was looking at: a formulation backed by actual research, not trending ingredients and hope.

But here’s what made me buy it: L’Oréal actually has the research infrastructure to back up what’s on the label. They’re not operating out of a WeWork with aspirational marketing copy. They have dermatologists, clinical trials, regulatory rigor. When they put Matrixyl peptides, niacinamide, adenosine, and rhamnose in a glass bottle at this price, I pay attention.

Worth it.

New L'Oreal serum for mature skin over 45.

Why This Launch Matters

The L’Oréal Age Perfect Micro-Collagen Serum is so new it has zero reviews on the UK L’Oréal Paris site. Available across EU markets (also at Boots UK for £17.99), it’s a lightweight peptide serum specifically formulated for mature skin at a price that undercuts most accessible peptide options.

L’Oréal could have launched another peptide cream. Instead, they gave the Age Perfect range (targeted at 45+ skin) a proper late Lighter texture, faster absorption, better layering. Smart, not lazy.

For context: I’m turning 46 this summer. I qualify.

New L'Oreal serum with peptides and micro collagen.

The Age Perfect Micro-Collagen Serum Formula

Matrixyl Peptides (Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 + Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7)
The classic duo clinically shown to stimulate collagen synthesis and improve firmness. You’ll find these in everything from The Ordinary to Lancôme. The difference is formulation and supporting actives.

Niacinamide
Brightens, strengthens barrier function, reduces inflammation, improves texture. Baseline essential.

Rhamnose
Plant-derived sugar that supports skin renewal. L’Oréal uses it across their range. Solid, if not flashy.

Adenosine
Anti-wrinkle benefits, cellular energy support. Genuinely effective but often overlooked in Western drugstore formulas.

Sodium Hyaluronate
Hydration and plumping. The basics done right.

The Trade-offs:
Alcohol denat is listed third. Fairly high alcohol content for that fast-absorbing feel. Significant fragrance (essential oils plus parfum). If your skin is sensitive or very dry, these could be problems. For me, they’re not.

L'Oreal Age Perfect micro collagen serum texture

Realistic Expectations

This isn’t a miracle serum. It’s a well-formulated peptide delivery system with solid actives. Over consistent use, expect smoother texture, gradual fine line reduction, better hydration, and more resilient skin.

This is maintenance and prevention skincare. It keeps your skin functioning well and aging slower. It won’t erase a decade overnight.

L'Oreal Age Perfect Micro-Collagen serum for mature skin.

The Experience

Packaging feels expensive. Weighty glass bottle, sleek pipette, gold accents that stay on-brand with Age Perfect without looking cheap.

The fragrance is present (French skincare, after all) but it’s that clean, fresh scent L’Oréal does well. Not the aggressive floral assault many find too potent (hate to say it but as much as I love Clarins, a few of their formulas come to mind). The scent doesn’t linger once applied.

L'Oreal serum for mature skin worth $30.

Texture is where the L’Oréal Age Perfect Micro-Collagen Serum excels. It’s a true serum, slightly milky with a golden opalescence but no shimmer. Absorbs in seconds. I’m using half a dropper per application, which provides just enough product to cover my face and neck. It layers seamlessly under SPF or night creams. No pilling, no tackiness, no sitting on the skin. It just works.

I’ve been using it morning and night for a few weeks. Too soon for visible results, but the daily experience is flawless. That matters. A serum you enjoy using is one you’ll use consistently, and consistency delivers results with peptides.

Who This Is For

You’re 45+ and want targeted peptides without spending $100+ on prestige. You’re comfortable with fragrance. You want something that layers well and doesn’t require routine overhaul.

Not for someone chasing cutting-edge science or managing very sensitive skin. This is for the savvy mature skin consumer who knows what peptides do, wants them in proper serum forms and refuses to pay luxury prices for democratized ingredients.

L'Oreal serum as part of my skincare routine.

How It Stacks Up

The Ordinary’s Multi-Peptide + HA ($20) has more peptides but no rhamnose or adenosine. Olay Collagen Peptide 24 MAX Serum ($40) has peptides but heavier, silicone-forward texture. The Inkey List Collagen Peptide Serum ($11-13) is lighter but less sophisticated formulation. At $20 (roughly £17.99/€15.55 converted), the L’Oréal hits the sweet spot: clinical actives, true serum texture, mature skin focus.

L'Oreal skincare for mature skin with fine lines.

The Verdict

Can’t speak to long-term results yet. The L’Oréal Age Perfect Micro-Collagen Serum is too new, and peptides need time. But the formulation is solid, the experience excellent, and the price unbeatable.

L’Oréal made a smart move: instead of another peptide cream lost in drugstore noise, they launched a silky serum suitable for day and/or night. Glass bottle, sharp INCI, mature skin focus, accessible price. That’s how you do a drugstore launch in 2026.

Where To Buy

The L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Micro-Collagen Firming Serum is available at boots.com for £17.99 or across EU markets (I paid €15.55 in Spain). If you’re peptide-curious and 45+, worth picking up.

Make Time Wellness expands to Ulta Beauty

0

It also highlights an expansion of the definition of beauty-from-within, as U.S. retailers incorporate products positioned for cognitive, energy and sleep support into categories once dominated by collagen, biotin and hair-focused claims.

For supplement manufacturers and ingredient suppliers, that expansion is reshaping expectations around formulation, substantiation and product design.

Beauty retailers broaden the wellness brief

Beauty retailers have increasingly moved beyond topical and aesthetic solutions, creating space for products that address how consumers feel and function day-to-day.

At Ulta alone, recent expansions in the last year include sleep and prenatal offerings from Ritual, fertility support supplements from Bird&Be and some of Nutrafol’s best-sellers, creating space for more holistic products.

“Retailers are playing a key role in advancing this conversation,” Helen Christoni, co-creator of Make Time Wellness, told NutraIngredients. “As beauty retailers expand into wellness, they are creating space for products that support how women think, feel and function—not just how they look.”

That shift carries consequences for brands and suppliers seeking shelf space in beauty channels, where “retailer expectations around substantiation, education and formulation quality are influencing innovation across the supplement industry,” Christoni added. “They are encouraging more responsible, science-led product development.”

Brain health moves into the beauty-from-within conversation

Make Time Wellness was developed to address what its founders view as a persistent gap in women’s wellness. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, women account for nearly two-thirds of Alzheimer’s cases, yet brain health has historically received less attention than heart, metabolic or appearance-driven categories.

“This convergence is exactly why we started Make Time Wellness,” Christoni said. “Women are beginning to understand that stress, cognitive load, sleep quality and hormonal changes affect not just how they feel, but how they look and age.”

The company’s formulation philosophy reflects that understanding, with cognitive support positioned as the starting point rather than an add-on.

“At Make Time, we start with the brain first, then support the body and only then focus on beauty outcomes,” Christoni said. “As consumers demand more credibility, products must do more than promise surface-level results.”

Multi-benefit products raise formulation expectations

Combining brain health and beauty benefits in a single product requires tighter formulation discipline than traditional single-claim supplements, according to Christoni.

“When designing multi-benefit formulations, each ingredient must be clinically studied, dosed appropriately and included for a clear biological reason,” she said. “We do not compromise brain-health efficacy to support secondary claims.”

Cognitive-support ingredients form the foundation of Make Time’s products, she explained, with beauty-focused actives added only when they align biologically.

“Prioritizing Brain, Body and Beauty—in that order—is what allows our products to remain credible and effective,” Christoni said.

For ingredient suppliers, the approach reflects growing demand for multifunctional ingredients that deliver multiple benefits without diluting evidence or dosing.

Manufacturing realities influence format choices

The addition of cognitive-support ingredients also shapes manufacturing and format decisions, particularly for brands targeting the beauty retail channel.

“Many cognitive-support ingredients are sensitive to heat and processing, which directly affects format decisions,” Christoni said. “Powders often provide better stability and allow for accurate dosing.”

Maintaining product consistency across formats requires careful coordination throughout the supply chain, she added.

“Ensuring consistent quality requires trusted ingredient partners, rigorous testing and manufacturers who understand that foundational brain-health ingredients must be protected throughout the entire process,” Christoni said.

Retail momentum pushes the category forward

As beauty retailers continue to broaden their wellness assortments, Christoni expects brain health to become a more established part of women’s daily supplement routines.

“Over the next several years, brain health will become a foundational part of women’s daily wellness routines,” she said. “The brain-health-and-beauty crossover will continue to evolve toward preventative, long-term support rather than quick fixes.”

For suppliers and contract manufacturers, the trend points to where investment may be needed next.

“Ingredient suppliers and manufacturers should be investing now in women-specific research, clinically validated multifunctional ingredients and manufacturing capabilities that support stable, high-quality formulations,” Christoni said.

Foundation Stick Coverage, Wear Time, and Touch-Up Guide

0

A foundation stick is a fast, portable way to get exactly the complexion you want: sheer for skin tint days, medium for everyday polish, or fuller for events. In short: foundation stick coverage is buildable, whether you prefer a skin tint look or something more polished. Apply in thin layers only where needed, then blend to keep skin looking like skin for a natural skin tint effect. As for wear, does foundation stick last all day? With the right prep, smart setting, and light touch-ups, it can deliver workday-to-evening radiance with a breathable skin tint feel without feeling heavy. This guide shows you how to prep, apply, build, set, and refresh, featuring Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick for luminous, breathable coverage you can take anywhere. This foundation stick also has 24 hour wear! For deeper technique detail, see our foundation stick application tips, including warming, blending, and setting advice drawn from artist best practices (see our foundation stick application tips).

Preparing Your Skin for Foundation Stick Application

Great coverage and long wear start with skin prep. Hydrated, balanced skin helps mineral-powered sticks glide without tugging and settle into a smooth, radiant, skin tint finish. Cleanse away oil and debris, moisturize to plump and smooth, then apply a primer tailored to your skin type to improve adherence and help prevent patchiness or uneven texture in your skin tint base. Proper prep also makes each thin layer more flexible and longer-wearing throughout the day (see our foundation stick application tips).

Why it helps

Dry

Gentle, non-stripping

Nourishing cream or balm

Hydrating, grip-boosting primer

Softens dry patches so the stick or skin tint glides and won’t catch; adds comfort.

Oily

Balancing gel or foam

Lightweight gel lotion

Mattifying, pore-blurring primer

Controls shine and improves foundation stick and skin tint wear without heaviness.

Combination

Gentle daily cleanser

Lightweight moisturizer

Targeted priming (mattify T-zone, hydrate cheeks)

Keeps the T-zone fresh while preserving skin tint radiance elsewhere.

Warming and Applying the Foundation Stick

Warming the foundation stick means letting body heat soften the formula for smoother glide. Either swipe it on the back of your hand or let the bullet rest on skin a second before applying for a smoother skin tint glide. This simple step reduces drag and limits patchiness (see our foundation stick application tips).

Apply in targeted strokes (short lines or small dots across the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin) only where you want coverage. This placement-first approach keeps foundation stick coverage natural and skin-like, creating a soft skin tint effect that layers cleanly where you need more opacity later (see targeted placement and light layers).

For optimal hygiene and precision, especially for touch-ups or professional use, load product onto a clean brush or spatula rather than applying directly from the stick to multiple faces. This is especially helpful for quick skin tint touch-ups.

Choosing the Right Tools for Blending

Your tool shapes the finish and coverage. Pick based on the look you want, from polished to a natural skin tint, and how quickly you need to blend.

Building Coverage: From Light to Full

Buildable coverage means you can layer only where you need more opacity while keeping the rest of your skin fresh and breathable for a natural skin tint feel. The key is thin, even passes with blending between each layer.

A simple step-up roadmap

  1. Sheer (skin tint): Lightly stripe the stick on the center of the face; blend outward with fingers or a dual-fiber synthetic foundation brush until it disappears into skin.
  2. Medium (everyday): Add a second thin layer on areas of redness, discoloration, or around the nose; blend with a brush for a polished edge and a refined skin tint look.
  3. Full (event-ready): Target only stubborn spots, such as the chin, cheeks, or hyperpigmentation, with small strokes; press and buff with a dense brush.
  4. Spot-conceal and sculpt: Use the stick as concealer on blemishes, or choose a deeper shade to contour and a lighter shade to subtly highlight for dimension while maintaining your skin tint base (see use a clean brush or spatula for hygienic pickup).

Remember: multiple whisper-thin layers look smoother and wear longer than one heavy pass, whether you want a true skin tint or fuller coverage.

Setting Your Foundation Stick for All-Day Wear

To maximize foundation stick wear and reduce transfer, set strategically, not heavily. This approach preserves skin tint radiance while locking down longevity.

  • Oily or humid days: Dust a sheer veil of mineral-based translucent powder on the T-zone to control shine and extend wear without dulling skin tint radiance (see our foundation stick application tips).
  • Dry or mature skin: Skip heavy powder; mist with a hydrating setting spray to lock in moisture and keep skin tint luminosity fresh.
  • Combination skin: Powder only oily zones, then finish with a light mist to meld layers together for a seamless skin tint finish.

Does foundation stick last all day? With proper prep, thin layers, and targeted setting, most skin types can expect comfortable, all-day skin tint wear with minimal midday maintenance.

Touching Up Foundation Stick Coverage Throughout the Day

Foundation sticks excel at fast, targeted touch-ups. Press, not swipe, a tiny amount onto areas that have worn down (around the nose, chin, or any redness). Blend edges with a clean fingertip or brush so the refresh disappears into your base for a natural skin tint result. Keep tools and hands clean to avoid contamination (see use a clean brush or spatula for hygienic pickup when sharing product).

Tip: Stash Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick in your bag or desk for a 10-second, luminous reset that won’t feel heavy midday.

Tips to Avoid Common Foundation Stick Application Mistakes

  • Overapplying in one pass → Switch to ultra-thin layers, blending between each to prevent cakiness and maintain a skin tint finish (see targeted placement and light layers).
  • Skipping the warm-up → Soften the bullet on your hand first for a smoother skin tint glide and fewer streaks.
  • Using the wrong tool → Avoid tools that can lift product; choose a dense brush, or fingers based on desired skin tint coverage (see avoid dry tools that can lift product).
  • Harsh demarcation lines → Blend into hairline, jaw, and around the nostrils; step into natural light to double-check edges for a seamless skin tint effect.
  • Shine build-up by noon → Prime and lightly powder only oily zones; carry blot papers and do pinpoint touch-ups rather than full reapplications to preserve your skin tint look.
  • Texture emphasized on dry patches → Add moisturizer or a hydrating primer under the stick and press the product in rather than dragging to keep the skin tint smooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What coverage levels can I achieve with a foundation stick?

Most sticks offer buildable coverage, from a sheer skin tint wash to medium or full, depending on how lightly you apply and how many layers you add.

How do I build coverage without a cakey finish?

Apply in thin, even layers only where needed and blend thoroughly between passes; let each layer set before adding more to keep a natural skin tint finish.

How long does foundation stick typically last on the skin?

With proper prep and setting, foundation sticks generally provide all-day wear and resist significant fading on most skin types, maintaining a fresh skin tint appearance. BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick delivers 24 hour wear that resists sweat, water and humidity.

Can foundation sticks be used for quick touch-ups?

Yes—dab a small amount where needed and blend edges with a clean finger or brush for a seamless mid-day skin tint refresh.

What setting methods help prolong wear for different skin types?

Use a mattifying primer and light powder for oily skin, set only the T-zone for combination skin, and opt for a hydrating mist on dry skin to keep longevity and comfort in balance while preserving a healthy skin tint glow.

7 Best Korean Toner Pads That Hydrate, Soothe, and Prep Skin

0

Why it’s worth it: Combination skin typically means oilier, congestion-prone areas (usually the T-zone) paired with drier or tighter patches elsewhere—and those needs can shift by the day. But having combo skin doesn’t mean you need different products for different parts of your face. Torriden’s Dive In 5D Hyaluronic Acid Toner Pads meet your skin where it is. The “5D hyaluronic acid” refers to a blend of five forms of hyaluronic acid with varying molecular sizes, allowing hydration to reach multiple layers of the skin rather than sitting on the surface. Dry areas feel cushioned without overwhelming oilier zones. For balance, gluconolactone (a gentle PHA) and willow bark extract lightly exfoliate to keep pores clear, while witch hazel and tea tree help manage shine. Barrier-supporting ceramides, beta-glucan, and humectants round things out, leaving skin hydrated, clear, and balanced all over.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Korean toner pads different from Western toner pads?

Korean skin-care routines in general tend to be much more treatment-focused than their Western counterparts. “Korean toner pads are more like essence-soaked pads, while Western toner pads are often astringent-based,” says Marie Jhin, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in San Carlos, California. Instead of relying on strong acids or alcohol for oil control, Korean formulas prioritize hydration, soothing, and gentle brightening. “Think of Korean toner pads as a nourishing bridge between cleansing and treatment,” Dr. Jhin adds, “not just an exfoliating step.” That’s why they’re often designed to be left on as mini masks—supporting the skin barrier while delivering active ingredients, rather than stripping skin in the name of clarity.

What ingredients are common in Korean toner pads?

Korean toner pads are known for their skin-friendly, barrier-first ingredient lists. “You’ll often see calming and barrier-supporting ingredients like galactomyces, bifida ferment, and cica,” says Dr. Jhin, along with nourishing staples such as propolis, snail mucin, and botanicals like heartleaf, mugwort, and rice. To round things out, many formulas include multitaskers like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid for hydration and brightening, plus gentler exfoliants—think PHA or low-dose AHA/BHA blends, so skin gets the benefits of exfoliation without the irritation.

Do Korean toner pads replace multiple steps?

While Korean toner pads don’t completely replace targeted serums, ampoules, or moisturizers, they do help streamline your routine, especially if you’re juggling multiple skin concerns. “They combine toning, light exfoliation, and essence into one step,” says Dr. Jhin, which can reduce a longer, multi-step routine into just a few essentials. Think of them as a smart shortcut: they prep skin, deliver active ingredients, and create a smoother base so the rest of your skin care works better—leaving skin looking more balanced, refreshed, and dewy without skipping the steps that really matter.

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide shade range inclusive of consumers with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is its packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best korean toner pads, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, cosmetic chemists, and professional makeup artists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product’s performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what’s involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the “best” for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Multichrome Magic from Dead Roses

Dead Roses Multichromes and Shimmer eyeshadows swatchedDead Roses Multichromes and Shimmer eyeshadows swatched

I love the Dead Roses multichromes and mattes! See the shade descriptions I wrote for the colors in my Bellabeautebar Dead Roses Palette article.

I’ve literally been obsessed with Dead Roses and Morally Grey palettes for the past year. I even took them with me on my trip to New Zealand. See the Best Makeup for Travel from a bold beauty lover.

If you love bold makeup, BBB has palettes for you. Want something green? They have you covered. Need neutrals? You’ve got options. Desire all pink or all purple? They have both! I love their palettes so much and that’s one of the many reasons I loved creating this Bellabeautebar Dead Roses Eyeshadow Tutorial to share with you.

My Bellabeautebar Palettes:

Kaleidos Makeup Musings

You know I love all things Kaleidos, so recently I broke my low buy to purchased 2 of the new eyeliners, Lunaria and Scarlet Striker, two of the new glosses and their refillable capsules, Prismelt and Cheat Code. I picked up two lip clays in Siren and Rosefire. Finally, I also snagged their Merlot pencil. The colors of the items I purchased are perfect and exactly what I wanted.

I want to shout out Kaleidos to everyone and thank them for making refillable lip products. More brands need to do this to cut down on waste. That said, I think the stick lipgloss formula from Kaleidos may be too emollient for me. When I apply them on top of the Merlot pencil or on the Rosefire lip clay, they transfer to my teeth almost immediately. I’d love any suggestions for preventing them getting on my teeth. That’s one of the many reasons I still love matte liquid lipsticks! No transferring to my teeth or around my face.

TirTir

I wanted to try a few things from TirTir and needed a replacement skincare product, so also purchased TirTir Mask Fit Aura Cushion in 13N Fair Ivory on sale. While the color match is nice for me and it did not oxidize on me, I don’t like the coverage. I feel like it shows too much texture on my skin. It looked nice on my hand but I did not like how it looked when worn. I will try it with another primer though, maybe that will help.

My Office

I don’t have an office set up in my new home, so I currently do my makeup in the kitchen. My lighting leans very yellow in the kitchen, even with natural light. Hopefully in the next month or so I’ll be able to set up an office space with better lighting. Right now, we’re slowly buying and thrifting furniture to fill our home, since we did not move much overseas. After I get my office set up I’ll be able to film tutorial in better lighting than I managed for this Bellabeautebar Dead Roses Eyeshadow Tutorial.

Makeup No Buy No More

Cosmic Brushes Angelic Palette, indie makeup from the UKCosmic Brushes Angelic Palette, indie makeup from the UK

I was on a makeup no buy for 4 months (and I’ve been on a low buy since 2019, which is why I don’t buy every new release that comes out), but even after that was over, I waited to buy a new eyeshadow palette. The one that finally caught my eye is the Cosmic Brushes Angelic palette. I’ll be comparing it to my Danessa Myricks Pastel Dream palette. I have the Cosmic Brushes Gothic and Cooltrails palettes and adore them, so I’m happy to give this one a try. Let me know if you want to see tutorials with it.

Final Thoughts

I thought life would slow down after I moved, but I was wrong! There’s been so much to do to integrate into society here. I will be working on creating more tutorials as requested. I hope you have a happy Friday the 13th and a wonderful weekend if you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or Carnival here in Europe.

Foundation Stick Guide by Skin Type: Oily, Acne-Prone, Mature, Combination

0

Foundation sticks are fast, portable, and surprisingly flexible—especially when matched to your skin. Whether you’re seeking extra moisture for dry patches or seamless coverage that won’t settle into fine lines, today’s mineral-powered sticks can deliver. Below, our skin-type matching guide details the best way to use a foundation stick for oily, dry, combination, mature, and acne-prone skin, including how to prep, what finish to choose, and when to set. We also include product pointers—like our Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick—and pro tips to help you find the best foundation stick for your skin type without the guesswork.

bareMinerals Foundation Stick for Oily Skin

A foundation stick can absolutely work for oily skin—especially a semi-matte or mattifying option formulated with oil-absorbing minerals and set strategically. A mattifying finish helps absorb excess surface sebum to reduce shine and create a soft-velvet look. Dermatology experts commonly recommend oil-free, non-comedogenic makeup and targeted powder in the T-zone to extend wear and minimize breakthrough shine throughout the day.

Try this routine for oil control and a shine-free foundation result:

  • Cleanse, then apply a lightweight, oil-control moisturizer.
  • Prime with a mattifying primer in the T-zone for extra grip.
  • Apply a foundation stick for oily skin in thin layers—concentrate coverage where you need it and buff out edges.
  • Set with a translucent mineral setting powder through the T-zone. Powder foundations and setting powders excel at controlling shine and can lock in stick formulas for longer wear.
  • Blot midday and re-powder if needed.

Mineral-powered foundation sticks that include clay plus non-comedogenic ingredients can keep skin looking balanced without clogging pores—creating an easy path to oil control and a truly shine-free foundation finish.

Pro pairing: Use our Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick lightly on the cheeks for natural coverage, then press Mineral Veil®-style setting powder through the T-zone for all-day control.

bareMinerals Foundation Stick for Dry Skin

Creamy, hydrating stick foundations are a natural fit for dry or dehydrated skin. Look for humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) and emollients (shea butter, squalane) that draw in water and cushion the skin for a comfortable, dewy finish. Humectants are ingredients that attract and hold moisture within the stratum corneum, while emollients smooth skin by filling in tiny surface gaps. In Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick, Acai Palm helps increase hydration, Magnesium Carbonate helps strengthen skin’s barrier and Silica and Mica help blur the look of skin.

Hydrating application tips:

  • Moisturize generously and let it absorb; add a hydrating primer if you’re very dry.

  • Warm the stick on the back of your hand, then apply to the center of the face and blend outward.
  • Press in with fingers or a brush for the most skin-like, luminous result.
  • Skip heavy powder; if needed, powder only around the nostrils or smile lines.

Mineral-powered, hydrating foundation sticks support the skin barrier and help prevent the tight, patchy look that dry skin can experience. For a fresh, luminous day-to-day look, reach for Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick for buildable, dewy coverage.

bareMinerals Foundation Stick for Combination Skin

Foundation sticks are especially versatile for normal-to-combination skin because you can customize coverage zone by zone. Combination skin typically has an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with cheeks that are dry or normal, so it benefits from products that both hydrate and control shine where needed.

How to apply a foundation stick for combination skin:

  • Map your face by zones: T-zone (often oily), cheeks (often normal/dry), jawline (variable).
  • Choose a lightweight, blendable stick; apply less in the T-zone and more on areas that need evening out.
  • Add a touch of hydrating primer or moisturizer under the cheek area; use a mattifying primer just in the T-zone.
  • Set only the oily zones with a sheer mineral powder for a balanced, skin-like finish.

For the best stick foundation for combination skin, prioritize flexible, buildable coverage with a natural or soft-matte finish that won’t over-dry the cheeks. Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick pairs well with a targeted T-zone set for a balanced, healthy glow.

bareMinerals Foundation Stick for Mature Skin

Mature skin often experiences increased dryness and more prominent fine lines, so creamy, hydrating sticks are ideal. When well-prepped, richer stick formulas can blur texture and sit comfortably without creasing. A buildable foundation stick offers coverage you can layer—light for a natural look or full to conceal, tailored to your preferred finish. Dermatologists also recommend favoring creamy textures over heavy powders to avoid emphasizing lines and dryness.

Pro tips for a smooth, line-friendly finish:

  • Prep with a hydrating moisturizer; add a smoothing primer where pores are visible.
  • Apply with short, gentle swipes, then pat with fingers.
  • Choose formulas labeled hydrating and crease-resistant; set minimally with a soft-focus mineral powder.

Mineral pigments offer a natural, soft-focus effect that helps diffuse the look of fine lines. Hydrating sticks like Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick keep mature skin comfortable and luminous throughout the day. This product is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles immediately and overtime*.

bareMinerals Foundation Stick for Acne-Prone Skin

For acne-prone and sensitive skin, look for non-comedogenic, fragrance-free formulas designed not to clog pores or trigger irritation. Dermatologists consistently advise choosing makeup labeled non-comedogenic and avoiding fragranced products to reduce the chance of breakouts or stinging.

What to check before you choose:

  • Non-comedogenic foundation stick prominently labeled on pack.
  • Fragrance-free and hypoallergenic where possible.
  • Mineral-powered, dermatologist-tested formulas, free of parabens and common irritants.
  • Patch-test along the jawline for 24 hours before full wear.

For coverage that lasts without congestion, keep layers thin, spot-conceal as needed, and set only where you get shiny. Clean, mineral-first formulas are a dependable foundation stick for acne-prone skin—safe for sensitive skin while delivering breathable, buildable coverage.

Benefits of bareMinerals Mineral-Powered Formulas for Every Skin Type

Our mineral-powered complexion staples are talc-free, vegan, non-comedogenic, dermatologist-tested, and formulated for breathable, buildable coverage that looks like skin. Many complexion hybrids now combine skincare actives and SPF for extra convenience—a direction that reflects the beauty market’s shift to “makeup-skincare” hybrids.

Mineral-powered benefits by skin type:

  • Oily: Oil-absorbing minerals help reduce shine; easy to set and refresh without caking.
  • Dry: Humectants and emollients support a supple, dewy finish that resists patchiness.
  • Combination: Flexible, targeted application with natural-looking, zone-specific control.
  • Mature: Soft-focus mineral pigments and creamy textures smooth and diffuse lines.
  • Acne-prone/sensitive: Non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and minimalist ingredient profiles reduce irritation risk.

How to Choose the Best Foundation Stick for Your Skin Type

Match three factors: your finish preference (matte, natural, dewy), your skin concern (oil control, hydration, sensitivity), and your undertone/shade.

Quick pairing guide (best foundation stick for skin type):

  • Oily: Semi-matte or mattifying; look for clay/kaolin, non-comedogenic. Set T-zone.
  • Dry: Dewy or natural; humectants + emollients. Skip heavy powder.
  • Combination: Natural/soft-matte; target hydration on cheeks, mattify T-zone.
  • Mature: Hydrating/crease-resistant; soft-focus minerals. Minimal powder.
  • Acne-prone/sensitive: Non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, dermatologist-tested.

Tip: Always sample or patch-test new formulas—especially if your skin is sensitive.

Application Tips for Flawless Foundation Stick Wear

  • Start with foundation stick, then add concealer only where needed for the most natural finish.
  • Choose your tool by finish: fingers (warmth and quick blend) and dense brush (more coverage).

Prep by skin type:

  • Oily: Lightweight moisturizer, mattifying primer, thin layers, set T-zone with mineral powder.
  • Dry: Rich moisturizer, hydrating primer, set with setting spray; powder sparingly.
  • Combination: Hydrate cheeks, mattify T-zone, set only oily areas.
  • Sensitive/acne-prone: Minimal, fragrance-free skincare; avoid heavy fragrance and occlusive layers under makeup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right foundation stick shade for my skin?

Use our foundation finder tool to compare this to your current foundation; match your undertone and test along the jawline in natural light.

Is a foundation stick suitable for sensitive or acne-prone skin?

Yes. Select a non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, mineral-powered formula and patch-test first to minimize irritation risk. Our skin tint stick is safe for sensitive skin, non-irritating and non-acnegenic.

How can I make foundation stick last longer on oily or combination skin?

Prep with a mattifying primer, apply in thin layers, and set only the T-zone with translucent mineral powder. BareMinerals foundation stick delivers 24 hour wear.

What coverage can I expect from a foundation stick on dry or mature skin?

Most offer buildable light-to-medium coverage that looks smooth and won’t cling when paired with a hydrating base. BareMinerals foundation stick provides light, buildable coverage.

Can foundation sticks provide hydration without looking cakey?

Yes—creamy, humectant-rich sticks melt into skin; blend with fingertips or a brush and avoid over-powdering for a natural finish.
