FDA to Remove Safety Warning From Hormone Therapy for Menopause

0

As reported on by Contemporary OB/GYN, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the FDA announced actions to revise safety labeling for menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), also known as hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The FDA informed application holders that updated labeling will more clearly describe benefit and risk considerations for systemic and local vaginal hormone products.

MHT is approved to treat vasomotor symptoms (VMS), symptoms related to vulvovaginal atrophy or genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), and, for some products, prevention of osteoporosis. According to the FDA, the requested labeling changes follow a comprehensive review of scientific literature, updated drug utilization data, public input and the July 2025 FDA Expert Panel meeting.

The agency reviewed data published since the original Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) trials, which began in the 1990s. WHI investigated estrogen plus progestin therapy in women with a uterus and estrogen-alone therapy in women without a uterus. Both trials were stopped early in the 2000s because of reported increases in breast cancer, stroke and lack of evidence of coronary artery disease prevention. Separate WHI studies in older women reported an increased risk of probable dementia.

Class-wide boxed warnings were added beginning in 2003. In subsequent years, clinicians and patient groups questioned the applicability of WHI findings to younger menopausal women for whom MHT is indicated. FDA drug utilization data indicate that MHT may be underused: in 2020, approximately 2 million women aged 46 to 65 years received prescriptions for systemic therapy, although the prevalence of moderate to severe VMS is estimated at about 34% among women aged 45 to 65 years.

The FDA noted that WHI participants had a mean age of 63 years, which differs from the typical age of menopause onset in the United States (51 years). The agency stated that many women start MHT between ages 45 and 55 years for symptom relief, whereas WHI enrolled an older population with higher baseline risks. The probable dementia findings were also based on women aged 65 to 79 years, older than the population initiating MHT for VMS.

“The WHI studies evaluated the safety of oral conjugated equine estrogens + medroxyprogesterone acetate,” said Lora Lansen, MD, chief medical officer at Elektra Health, and a board and Menopause Society-certified family physician. “That was the most popular and widely accessible version of hormone therapy at the time. Newer therapies include transdermal estradiol—which significantly diminishes the risk of VTE by avoiding first-pass hepatic metabolism—and oral micronized progesterone, which, unlike synthetic progestogens, has a seemingly neutral effect on breast tissue. It’s important to note that we need more data to make up for the dearth of research in this domain and until we better understand the full impact of MHT on breast cancer risk, women with a personal history of breast cancer remain ineligible for MHT.

Lansen added, “In reevaluating WHI data, we’ve also learned that timing matters. The risk of MHT-associated adverse outcomes is still considered relatively high for women who start MHT over 60 years of age and/or 10-plus years after their final menstrual period. More data is needed to determine whether MHT can be safely administered in this patient population. For now, it is recommended that MHT start <60 years old and <10 years after the final menstrual period. It can be continued for as long as there is perceived benefit.

Based on its assessment, the FDA requested several key labeling changes:

For all MHT products (systemic and local vaginal):

  • Remove language in the boxed warning related to cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and probable dementia.
  • Remove language related to endometrial cancer except for systemic estrogen-alone products.
  • Remove the recommendation to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.
  • Remove the probable dementia warning throughout labeling.

For systemic products:

  • Add consideration of starting therapy for moderate to severe VMS in women younger than 60 years or within 10 years of menopause onset.
  • Add WHI data for women aged 50 to 59 years.
  • Retain the boxed warning regarding endometrial cancer for estrogen-alone products.
  • Retain information on cardiovascular disease and breast cancer in labeling outside the boxed warning.

For local vaginal estrogen products:

  • Condense safety information and prioritize content most relevant to local use.

At an HHS press conference announcing the broader policy shift, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated, “Today, we are standing up for every woman who has symptoms of menopause and is looking to know her options and receive potentially life-changing treatment.” He added, “We are returning to evidence-based medicine and giving women control over their health again.”

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, MD, MPH, said, “Women and their physicians should make decisions based on data, not fear.”

As estrogen and progesterone decline during menopause, hormone therapy can relieve symptoms such as VMS, sleep disturbances and bone loss. Alicia Jackson, PhD, director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, said, “Estrogen is a key hormone for women’s health. Every single part of a woman’s body depends on estrogen to operate at its best.”

The FDA also noted that randomized studies show reductions in all-cause mortality and fractures among women who initiate systemic hormone therapy within 10 years of menopause or before age 60 years. Updated labeling is expected to reflect these considerations.

In addition to labeling changes, the FDA approved 2 new therapies: a generic version of conjugated estrogens and a non-hormonal treatment for moderate to severe VMS. The agency stated that the generic conjugated estrogen product is expected to improve affordability and access.

Renée Moxi Laser Treatment Experience: Before, After, & Tips

0

Ever heard of the MOXI® Laser? I hadn’t until certified laser specialist and master aesthetician Erma Morris persuaded me to do it. Having never undergone a facial laser before, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I love a good chemical peel but have always been hesitant to go forward with a laser. But now, having been in the skincare industry as long as I have (35 years!), I know they have become a tried and true staple in skincare– so I gave the MOXI laser treatment a shot!

Last January I had my first MOXI appointment with Erma at Refine Aesthetics in Austin, Texas (who also is a PRO partner of ours and sells our skincare line!). Let me share what the procedure was like– and if it’s really worth your time and money.

The MOXI Laser Procedure Explained

MOXI delivers non-ablative laser energy that revitalizes skin by correcting the initial signs of sun damage and aging. The primary focus of this quick, lunchtime procedure is to correct uneven pigmentation and improve tone and texture. Wondering if you’re the ideal candidate for MOXI? Let’s dive into the details!

What is MOXI Laster Treatment?

A quick 8 to 10-minute treatment, MOXI improves the overall skin tone and texture. As for the science behind it, this fractional laser creates micro-coagulation zones on the skin, sending it into repair mode and replacing the damaged cells with healthier, brighter skin. With minimal downtime or discomfort, this is a great option for any skin type looking to achieve younger-looking skin in just seven days.

What are the benefits?

MOXI is specifically designed as a preventative skin treatment to correct sun damage and early signs of aging without downtime. Through a gentle, fractionated wavelength, this laser corrects pigmentation issues and improves uneven skin tone and bumpy texture.

How many sessions are required?

While it is generally recommended to undergo three to four treatments with approximately four to five weeks in between, your provider will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan to meet your specific goals. This will include the number of treatments needed, a timeline of when you can expect visible results, as well as pre and post-treatment instructions.

What should I expect during the treatment?

Depending on your goals, the treatment usually starts with a numbing cream applied 30-45 minutes before the actual procedure. However, I decided to skip the numbing cream (the idea of numbing my skin freaks me out) and jumped right in.

I have a high pain tolerance, so while the laser was uncomfortable, it was manageable for me. During the treatment, the MOXI laser glides over the skin, creating a spicy, warming sensation. To counteract the heat, most providers, like mine, will also have a fan blow cool air directly on the skin to help minimize discomfort.

What were the immediate effects?

In my case, the laser portion only took six minutes. Afterward, my face felt incredibly hot, like jalapeño juice had been poured all over it! I live in Texas so I’m used to spice! Thankfully, a Velez cooling mask was then applied to soothe my skin. This biotech mask, commonly used post-MOXI, hydrates and soothes stressed-out skin. I was amazed at how much the redness decreased after just 15 minutes, though my skin still felt quite hot.

The real surprise came 30 minutes later. I went from feeling super hot to experiencing full-body chills within minutes. That’s when I realized my body was trying to regulate its temperature. Just like when you have a fever and get chills, this is simply a result of rapid muscle contractions as your body attempts to warm itself back up following a temperature rise. I  was going through this exact process for about an hour as my body tried to reach the same temperature as my face.

What is the post-treatment care?

Post-MOXI protocol is simple: Wear a moisturizing sunscreen and stay out of the sun as much as possible. I simply washed my face morning and night with Purifying Face Washfollowed by Moisture Infusion Tonerand used Weightless Protection SPF 30 in the morning and Skin Recovery Lotion at night. I recommend using a lightweight moisturizer for the first few days to allow any remaining heat in the skin to escape. Avoid using anything too heavy as it will trap in the heat.

I also chose to double up on antioxidant protection since my skin was particularly vulnerable. I used vitamin C both topically and took 1000 mg. orally every morning, as well as sunscreen every single day. You must focus extra on sun protection, as your skin will be particularly vulnerable throughout the healing process.

Note: It says in the post-treatment care to avoid using a vitamin C serum during the healing process due to the possibility of a vitamin C acid burnbut Vitamin C&E Treatment uses a stable, no-sting formula that’s perfect for extra antioxidant protection and hydration. After all,  your skin is going through incredible inflammation from the laser and that is when your skin requires antioxidants the most!

What is the healing process?

The healing process will vary from person to person for a variety of reasons, including the amount of sun damage on the skin, use of retinoids and exfoliating acids beforehand, skin type, laser setting used (I opted for level 2 out of 3), etc. Here’s how it looked for me:

  • Day 1: My skin was very flaky, but this could be due to the fact I was using a .5 prescription retinoid in the days leading up to the treatment. My under-eyes were also puffy and swollen, and my skin, especially around my mouth, was rough and textured from all the movement. My face and neck were still very pink but not as hot.
  • Day 2: My skin began to feel like sandpaper as I continued to peel, but it wasn’t too uncomfortable. Most of the redness had subsided, leaving me with more of a sun-kissed look. I did notice that my neck was a bit pinker than my face, likely because the neck area is typically more sensitive.
  • Day 3: I began to turn the corner on day three. While my skin still felt sandy in certain spots, I could tell some of the tiny brown spots that typically appear after laser treatments, also known as MENDS (Microscopic Epidermal Necrotic Debris), were beginning to fade. I always considered myself to be a fast healer, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how nicely I was recovering.
  • Day 4: My skin was no longer pink, but I decided to wear foundation anyway— and I wish I hadn’t. It clung to residual flakiness, only drawing more attention to the texture. Since there was no heat in the skin anymore, I decided to use Rest Day Masque that night. This moisturizing treatment uses Barrier3 technology to bind the skin cells together and reduce the appearance of flakiness. Afterward, my skin was instantly hydrated and much softer.
  • Day 5: With continued use of Rest Day Masque, my skin was almost entirely back to normal. I was still experiencing minimal flaking around the nose, jawline, and neck, but most of it was gone. The sandpaper feeling was also gone, meaning I would likely be back to normal in another day or two.
  • Day 6: I woke up on day six with no visible flaking or dryness and knew I’d reached the end of the healing process. My skin was visibly brighter and more firm.

I was very impressed with how quickly and beautifully my skin healed. While there wasn’t much pigmentation to correct, I did see improved brightness and a renewed glow in less than a week.

How much does MOXI cost?

The treatment costs around $750 per treatment area. Treatable areas include the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs.

Why I Chose the Treatment

I’ve always been super dedicated to my skincare routine, so I went into this treatment knowing I didn’t have a ton of sun damage to fix. However, I decided to give MOXI a shot anyway. I mean, if it could make my skin tone even a little more even-toned and brighter, why not?

My Results with MOXI Laser Treatment

MOXI Before and After

After just six days I had a noticeably more even skin tone and brighter glow. Here are the results I documented in the days following the treatment.

Essential MOXI Treatment Aftercare Tips

While MOXI post-treatment care doesn’t consist of much, there are a few things to prioritize to get the most from your experience. Other than being on top of your sunscreen, here are a few other things to keep in mind.

When can you exfoliate after the procedure?

As with almost any facial treatment that causes the skin to peel and flake, you don’t want to use any form of physical or chemical exfoliation until your skin is no longer flaking. This is the case for several reasons. For one, your skin is significantly more sensitive during the healing process since it is more vulnerable than usual. Second, these treatments are done to increase cell turnover and boost collagen production, meaning you should let them heal naturally in order to receive the full benefits. Exfoliating before your skin is ready will likely cause more harm than good.

Can I wear makeup after getting it done?

You must go without makeup for the first 24 hours following the treatment. After that, you’re welcome to go about your routine as normal. However, as I mentioned earlier, the application may not go as smoothly as you’re used to. Depending on how flaky your skin is, a light foundation may accentuate any texture. This is why I recommend opting for a heavier, more hydrating foundation during the healing process.

Final Thoughts and Recommendations

All in all, I was very pleased with my first laser experience. If you’re someone who has been hesitant about trying laser treatments like I was, this is a great, super quick option for dipping your toes into the world of lasers. It’s also ideal for those with little to no downtime in their schedule. If you have sun damage, pigmentation, or signs of aging that you’d like to address, I highly recommend this treatment for effective skin rejuvenation and I will absolutely get it again. My skin is almost 55 years old so it’s very beneficial for me to get an extra boost here and there, above and beyond my at-home skincare routine!

Explore the effectiveness of neurotoxins like Botox in reducing wrinkles and achieving a youthful skin appearance, guided by Apex Skin’s expert insights.

0

“I’d really like a few more wrinkles around my eyes,” said nobody ever. Of course, it’s an honor to live a long life, and wrinkles are, inevitably, part of that seasoning package. Consider this, however: people spend around $49 billion globally each year on anti-wrinkle skin care, and the demand for wrinkle treatment is set to continue growing past that over the coming years. People looking for how to get rid of wrinkles often refer to all such treatments as “Botox”, but many different products fall into the anti-wrinkle skincare category. Botoxa neurotoxin, is only one option of many, and finding the right option for you isn’t always an easy task.

So, to help you find your way through this maze, Apex Skin will be holding “Botox Week” from April 21 through 25 to celebrate the benefits of all of these treatments, to educate the public about their benefits, and to provide consultations for patients who want to know how to get rid of wrinkles in the best way that makes sense for them individually.
To set you up for wrinkle-erasing success ahead of time, we are talking with some of our Apex Skin wrinkle-busting experts today:

One of the most common questions we hear at Apex Skin is “Why? Why do I have wrinkles? Why?” There are several factors, but the biggest one is simply the natural aging process. Additional factors can speed up or slow down this process, however.

Two different types of wrinkles can appear on your visage as well:

She continues: “Now, remove most of that stack of paper, leaving only a few sheets. You are now able to bend it more and crease the paper (static wrinkles). This represents aged skin that is thin and has lost a lot of collagen and elastin. This is where you see the wrinkles that are there all the time, not just when you are making expressions. At this point, Botox will help, but you and your dermatology provider may want to discuss alternative options to help reduce the appearance of these wrinkles.”

Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, and Jeuveau are all medical-grade, FDA-approved cosmetic treatments that use a type of neurotoxin derived from Botulinum type A, a purified form of Clostridium botulinum bacteria. It’s completely understandable that when you hear the word “neurotoxin” you wonder, “Is Botox safe?” So let’s talk about Botox and its cousins, which all work slightly differently, but have the same origins.

“Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, and Jeuveau are all neurotoxins that are used in aesthetic medicine to reduce wrinkles,” explains Panichi. “They share a similar mechanism of action but are different in terms of formulation, onset, duration, and effectiveness. The best neurotoxin for each patient will usually depend on which area needs to be treated, cosmetic goals, desired onset, and duration. It is best to consult with an aesthetic provider to assess the best option for individual preferences and needs.”

A Belgian scientist discovered Clostridium botulinum bacteria back in the 1920s, and it’s been under study ever since. In the wild, this neurotoxin can cause severe and deadly illness through paralyzation. However, under carefully controlled, purified circumstances, its usefulness in treating a wide range of conditions has emerged. Even as far back as the 1970s, scientists and doctors had found medical applications for this neurotoxin, including treating crossed eyes. By the early 2000s, scientists had expanded its safe and useful applications to include erasing wrinkles, treating excessive sweatinghelping dentists treat TMJ-related jaw pain, and even using Botox for migraines, to name a few.

“Neurotoxins are a substance that temporarily blocks the nerve signals that make your muscles contract,” explains Panichi. “A common neurotoxin that is used for cosmetic purposes is Botox. By relaxing certain muscles of the face, we can prevent unwanted muscle movement and smooth out wrinkles.

In other words, injecting a tiny, purified amount of this neurotoxin into precise locations temporarily blocks nerve impulses to the affected area and paralyzes surrounding muscles. This temporary paralysis relaxes and softens wrinkles, effectively erasing them for approximately three to six months, depending on the patient and the specific treatment used.

Today, about 3.6 million Americans receive Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, and Jeuveau anti-wrinkle skin care treatments to smooth out frown lines (Glabellar lines), crow’s feet (wrinkles at the eye corners), forehead creases, cobblestone chin, and wrinkles at the mouth corners. These neurotoxin anti-wrinkle treatments are especially effective for those dynamic wrinkles that appear with our facial expressions. Stebbins says there are additional aesthetic improvements patients can expect:

“Other improvements include, but are not limited to, eyebrow lift, non-surgical rhinoplasty creating the appearance of a straighter or a thinner nose, facial contouringgummy smile reduction where you see less of your gum when you smile, lifted lip giving the appearance of a fuller lip, neck bands to soften the appearance of aging and muscle tension in the neck, reduction of jaw clenching or teeth grinding, reduction in sweat, and migraine relief.”

So, now you know that Botox is simply the now-generic term for a wide range of neutoxin anti-wrinkle skin care treatment options. Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, and Jeuveau are all in the same category. But there are quite a few other myths Stebbins busts here as well:

We’ve already mentioned a couple of different medical applications for neurotoxin treatment besides wrinkle treatment, including Botox for migraines and TMJ. So far, the list of conditions that can be alleviated includes:

If you are considering any type of neurotoxin wrinkle treatment, it’s important to meet with your dermatology provider to discuss your individual needs specifically.

“Deciding the best type of neurotoxin and treatment plan for an individual requires a personalized approach,” says Panichi. “We take into account several different factors when determining this: skin type, age, skin concern, desired results, and medical history. After a thorough evaluation of the patient’s skin, anatomy, and history, we can determine the ideal treatment plan. The appropriate number of units will be determined based on muscle strength, the severity of wrinkles, and the product being used. The areas of the face that will be injected are thoroughly evaluated and the tox will be injected to ensure a natural and balanced effect. By considering each of these factors, I can determine a treatment plan that will be personalized to the patient’s goals, safe, and effective.”

Of course, neurotoxins aren’t the only wrinkle treatment out there. There are many ways to slow down the aging process and boost your skin’s radiant appearance. Here, Schaffer, Panichi, and Stebbins share some of their go-to recommendations:

Sunscreen! A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30+ protects against both UVA and UVB rays is always my first recommendation,” says Schaffer. “Outside of the natural aging process, sun damage is the main culprit of wrinkles and aging skin. Incorporating SPF into your daily routine is crucial for preventative measures. Retinol are also important to promote skin cell turnover and collagen production. Lifestyle choices like not smoking, wearing a hat and SPF protective clothing, eating welland staying hydrated are small things you can do to prevent wrinkles and sun damage.”

In addition to these lifestyle tips, she recommends skincare treatments, including Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), antioxidants, moisturizersand vitamin A Acid (Tretinoin) for managing signs of aging. These are all things you can discuss with your dermatology provider so you get the individual recommendations best for your skin.

Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers restore lost volume and smooth fine lines. They are especially effective for the cheeks, lips, and nasolabial folds. Results typically last from six months to two years, depending on the filler used.

Chemical Peels
Professional-grade, dermatological chemical peels exfoliate the outermost layer of skin, improving texture and reducing fine lines. There is a wide range of chemical peel wrinkle treatment optionsfrom light to deep, depending on your skin type and aesthetic goals.

Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation method that removes dead skin cells and peach fuzz. This skincare treatment leaves the skin smoother and more radiant, improving product absorption.

Diamond Glow (Formerly Known as Dermalinfusion)
Diamond Glow is a 3-in-1 treatment that exfoliates the skin and infuses the skin with targeted extracts and serums to give a super-charged boost of hydration and nourishment to improve skin texture, erase fine lines, and boost collagen and elastin production for a radiant, smooth look.

Laser and Light-Based Treatments
Laser resurfacing and IPL (intense pulsed light) are wrinkle treatment options that stimulate collagen production to reduce wrinkles, balance pigmentation, and improve overall skin tone. “One of my favorite treatments that help with fine lines and wrinkles is the ResurFx laser treatment,” says Panichi. “This uses controlled laser beams at different levels of the skin to cause a healing cascade that can lead to tighter and smoother skin. This laser is non-ablative, safe on most skin types, and has minimal downtime making it a great treatment option for many patients.”

Microneedling
Microneedling is another form of collagen stimulation,” says Panichi. “It involves controlled micro-injuries to the skin to prompt a healing response that boosts collagen production. It can be used on its own or combined with serums (such as PRP and growth factors) to further enhance collagen stimulation.”

Injectable Collagen Stimulators
“Injectable collagen stimulators such as Sculptra are another great option,” says Panichi. “Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid which is gradually absorbed by the body. It stimulates the skin to produce its own collagen resulting in subtle and natural improvement over time. It’s all about getting more collagen!”

So, Botox is just one type of anti-wrinkle skin care treatment, but remember there are so many others. It all comes down to what kind of wrinkles you have, where they are, your skin health, tone, and goals, and getting a professional consultation that takes all of your unique factors into account. You can schedule a same-day appointment today, and be sure to stop by one of our locations during Botox Week (April 21 through 25) to explore all of the best options for how to get rid of wrinkles in your life!

Patricia Field Hosts Charlie’s 18th Birthday Rescue Fashion Show Event

0

It happened. I had a crazy idea for Charlie’s 18th birthday and children’s book, Charlie at the Pom Springs Hoteland somehow pulled it off. Of course it helped that ‘Sex and the City’ Stylist Patricia Field, wrote the forward for the book and has a general policy of “you plan it, I’ll do the fashion.”

With that I wanted to create a Rescue Dogs fashion show, dressed in one of a kind ‘Kiss the Dogs NYC for Patricia Field ArtFashion’ dog clothes, to raise awareness for senior rescues.

Designed by James Suozzi, “Kiss the Dogs NYC” was originally created in 2013 for Patricia Field’s former Bowery Street Boutique. Suozzi also creates bespoke pieces and has been a part of Charlie’s life since his adoption, creating special pieces for him, most notably when Charlie walked me down the aisle in 2022.

I worked with Patricia Field and the Patricia Field ArtFashion team to dress adoptable rescues from Animal Haven, Gatto Pups & Friends, and PupStarz Rescue. and tell their stories. Additionally, Charlie opened and closed the show in a custom tutu (for his full ‘Charlie Bradshaw’ moment). The event was hosted at Flying Solo at 419 Broome St, which features independent fashion designers from around the world.

Weddings require a lot of planning and details to get everything just right. From the location, to the photographer, to the decor, to the food, to the music, and the list goes on. It seems all so hard to plan and determine so it can come out as you envision it. Not only are you planning things to your taste but you also have to consider that of your bridesmaids who each have a unique silhouette that requires a custom approach.

Main Body Types

A one size fits all bridesmaid gowns may not be the best option for each lady as each one has a different shape. While you can opt for the same cut for all of them and adjust the dresses accordingly, consider having each one having the same dress in a cut that suits her body shape.

Pear-shaped

The shoulders are narrower than the hips and the bust is on the small size. The waist tends to be defined as the hips are large. Thighs and bum are full or muscular.

Apple-shaped

This body shape has rounder, wider shoulder line and flattish bottom. The bust size is between average to big and the mid-section is full. There is little to no definition to the waistline, and the hips are narrow and legs are narrow.

Hourglass

The shoulders are slightly rounded, with a bust and hips that are the same width defined by a small waist. Bottom and hips are rounded and thighs are fuller.

Rectangle

The shoulders are straight and about the same width as the bust and hips. The waist is undefined and this body type is characterized by little to no curves.

Inverted Triangle

The shoulders are noticeably wider than the hip-line and are squared and prominent. The bust ranges from small to big, with little to no waist definition. The hips are straight and the bottom is flat, though the legs are nicely shaped thanks to the athletic physique.

Bridesmaid Gowns Silhouettes

Start by surveying what each one’s body shape is and noting it down. Most companies will offer custom sizes and tailoring for bridesmaid gowns so take advantage of that option to ensure each dress fits like a glove, especially if you opt for similar cuts for each but that may fit each one differently.

A-Line

This silhouette run like an A from top to bottom. The A-line dress is a simple and classic look suitable for every body shape. Women with a larger bust would benefit the most but it’s also helpful to conceal a wider lower body or give women with a narrower frame some curve. Satin fabrics work well with A line dresses. It’s a flexible cut that requires minimal changes to the bodice.

Ballgown

Ball gowns are fitted at the top with a full skirt. It’s reminiscent of princess dresses. This cut fits all body shapes well though may not be suitable for apple type bodies. It may also fit slim or pear-shaped figures best because it accentuates the waist and covers the lower half. Women with rectangular shaped bodies can benefit from the ballgown as it can create the illusion of curves.

Column

A column silhouette is great for short women as it adds height. It’s a trendy look that’s more on the simple side. The column suits hourglass figures given that it doesn’t hide unfavourable areas in the body and does not give the illusion of curves.

Mermaid

The mermaid silhouette resembles the trumpet but is more fitting at the top all the way to the knees where it starts to expand. This is style is very feminine exposing curves. As the trumpet cut, this shape is more suitable for the pear and hourglass figures. As a rectangle figure, it may be worth a try to create illusion of curves.

Trumpet

The trumpet dress progressively flows to get to its widest at the hem, creating a trumpet effect. If you’re a pear shaped or hourglass, you can definitely benefit from this look as it will accentuate your curves.

Empire Line

Empire style is an elevated waistline that sits under the bust, while the rest of the dress flows down to the bottom. Just like the A-Lin, this cut suits all body types, it is particularly suitable for women with a small chest since it attracts the neckline. It also has the ability to hide a big chest by limiting the bust’s height thanks to the square neckline.

Hemlines

Different body shapes look better in different hemline lengths. Below is a list of the hemlines and which body type they suit best, and the type of wedding.

Floor Length

Floor length is a forgiving length as it hides body flaws. Whether you’re tall or petite, wearing floor length will elongate your figure. This is especially important for petite women as it works in their favour.

Maxi Length

Maxi length usually have hemlines that end near the ankles but not sweeping the floor. A maxi hemline looks good on all body types, tall, petite, curvy or slim. It creates an elongated visual proportion which is ideal for petite women.

Tea-length

The tea-length goes below the knees and often ends up at the widest part of your calf, which results in a truncated silhouette. It is becoming trendier. This look is great for a casual ceremony and a bride who likes to display some beautiful heels.

It falls inches below the knee, and often ends up at the widest part of your calf, which results in a truncated silhouette. Midi length flattering for tall women as it defines their height. Avoid wearing midi if you’re petite or curvy on the bottom.

Knee Length

Knee-length end around the knee. It’s a safe choice for all types of weddings. It works well for ladies who are tall as it shows just the right amount of your legs. Petite women should avoid it as it does not elongate the figure.

Mini Length

Mini dresses are cute and one of the most flattering hemlines. They may not be the most appropriate to wear for formal weddings. They’re great for all height and are especially short ladies.

Necklines

To make sure the bridesmaid gowns fit well, considering necklines and sleeves are important as each body shapes respond differently to the various cuts.

For The Hourglass

Accentuating the hourglass bust with a scoop, V, or either variations of sweetheart necklines work flawlessly. Boat necks show lots of collarbone and cleavage. High necklines cover your bust so they are not the best look for that body shape. A sleeveless top, like a halter neckline can be a good compromise.

For Apple Shapes

A plunging, square, or sweetheart necklines are best. Strapless necklines work well with full skirts to balance the amount of skin showing with a big ball gown. Though square necklines aren’t popular gown dress necklines, they emanate a princess look.

For Pear Shapes

Look for wide sleeves, boat necks, and necklines that expose the collarbones and shoulder width. Bust-enhancing dress necklines look good for pear shapes like strapless sweethearts.

For Inverted Triangle Shapes

Dress necklines that are perfect for an inverted triangle body shape are halter, wide straps, and V-necks- even deep V-necklines. The idea is to slim the shoulders while creating vertical lines to even out the width of your shoulders with your hips. Steer clear from ruffles on the neckline, spaghetti straps with tighter dresses, and boat neck styles. These enhance your broad shoulders, not slim which is what you want. If you absolutely must wear spaghetti straps, choose a ball gown, fuller A-line gown or fit-and-flare.

For Rectangle Shapes

Dress necklines best for this type are scoop, illusion sweetheart, off-the-shoulder, and V-neck. Don’t bother with boxy shoulder dresses or anything with shoulder pads and peplums, create a more boxy look.
