28 Best Moisturisers For Every Skin Type, Reviewed

0

Where in my skincare routine should I apply moisturiser?

“The most important thing is that your SPF will always come last.  Following this rule, in general you should apply your skincare in order of consistency – starting with the thinnest and working up to the thickest which will usually be your moisturiser,” suggests Dr Christine.

Dr Christine advises to follow the rough order of toner first, then facial essences/serums, followed by a moisturiser and a dedicated sunscreen for face. “The only exception to that rule is if you use a facial oil in which case that comes after the moisturiser to occlude or seal everything underneath it in.”

After you’ve massaged in your moisturiser, don’t forget to gently dab on some eye cream (a caffeine eye cream, if you fancy), and use one of the best silk pillowcases while you sleep to complete your truly comprehensive skincare regime. Just remember: everyone’s skin concerns will differ slightly, so it’s worth working out what your skin loves to sip on, taking into account seasonal or hormonal changes.

Which moisturisers are best for each skin type?

If you’re looking for the best moisturiser for oily skin or acne-prone skinDr Christine shares that it’s better to look for a lighter, water-based, oil-free moisturiser. “Moisturising ingredients and humectants such as hyaluronic acid, squalane, ceramides and glycerin are all well suited to oily skin,” adds Dr Alexis Granite. “Other actives to consider include retinol, salicylic acid and niacinamide, all of which are especially good if you are prone to breakouts in addition to oily skin,” she continues.

Dr Alexis also advises to avoid plosives that will block your pores, “including petrolatum, lanolin, mineral oil and paraffin.”

How about the best moisturiser for mature skin and the best moisturiser for dry skin?

“As we age, we produce less oil and our skin becomes drier.  Look for richer cream moisturisers that contain ceramides and lipids to really nourish the skin barrier, and prevent further moisture loss,” shares Dr Christine. According to Dr Alexis, you may also benefit from layering a hyaluronic acid serum underneath “to help combat dryness.”

And if you want the best moisturiser for sensitive skin, Dr Christine advises to “look for fragrance and paraben-free, hypoallergenic formulations to avoid any unnecessary irritation.” You might also want to consider formulas with ceramides, emollients and aloe vera to help repair your skin’s moisture barrier.

How often should I moisturise?

According to Dr Christine, “for those with very oily skin, moisturising with a light product once daily may be enough. Others might require a richer heavier cream that they might need to reapply throughout the day.” The truth is, dermatologists agree that constant hydration can benefit every skin type (yep, even oily and acne-prone). “Skin oil (sebum) and skin hydration are two separate things and just because the skin is oily does not mean it is well hydrated,” shares Dr Alexis.

For a day moisturiser, you should try and get some antioxidants (vitamins A, B3, C or E), so it’s always a good idea to look out for potent plant extracts such as resveratrol, as well as some level of SPF (you still need to apply an actual sunscreen, though – something with at least SPF 30 should suffice). At night, should should use your night cream to incorporate a collagen-boosting retinoid, which is renowned for its rejuvenating, youth-boosting benefits.

Making All My Nail Polish Dreams Come True at the ORLY Color Lab!

0

Have you ever wished that you could create your perfect, unique shade of nail polish? One that is 100% totally yours and nobody else’s? Well, in case you aren’t in the position to start an indie nail polish company complete with pigments and bases and shimmers and glitter, I have your solution! Read on to learn more!

A week or so ago, I needed to get out of Las Vegas, as one does in mid-July when it’s 110°, so I hit the road and headed toward Los Angeles! First stop was Venice Beach, to grab breakfast and explore Abbot Kinney, and really just to get outside and get some fresh air! Next on my agenda, and why I’m sitting here writing this post, is the ORLY Color Lab! You may have seen posts about it on Instagram, it’s a little shop in LA where you can concoct your dream color for only $20!

When you walk into the shop, you’re greeted by Emma, a fellow ginger, and she’ll be your resident nail mixologist for your session– she knows all about these mixtures, and what will work with what. She knows just how much blue to add to get that exact shade of grey you’re picturing in your head, or that mixing red shimmer into bright turquoise will definitely darken the shade!

HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?

If you have your dream shade already emblazoned in your mind, she’ll guide you right over to the mixing table. If you’re just not sure, but want the experience of creating your own polish, she’ll guide you over to a special kiosk that will help guide you through a few different steps:

Step 1. Choose the mood for your polish. Here you’ll choose between Brights & Nights, where you’ll go to…

Step 2. Your color inspiration. Here you pick an image that speaks to you with its color. You’ll find photos of feathers, turquoise stones, flowers, flamingos, etc., and once you pick one of those images, you’ll go to…

Step 3. The tint. During this step, you’re shown the original color from the inspiration image, a lighter version, and a darker version. Select one of those and you’re guided to…

Step 4. The effects! This is where you add a bit of fun! You can choose between Pearl Shimmer, Metallic Shimmer, or no effect, where you’ll end up with a creme. Choose one of these and proceed to…

Step 5. Naming your shade! This is where you make your unique shade even MORE unique! Ever envied the job of nail polish namer? This is where you get your chance! Be creative, but concise – you can use up to 35 characters! Once you name your polish, you pay at the kiosk and Emma starts work on your perfect formula using a one-of-a-kind concoction of several of their beautiful pigment shades! (and shimmer/pearl if you choose to add it!).

WHAT DID I MAKE?

Because I had my inspiration already rattling around in my brain, I headed straight to Emma to get started. My inspo? The sunset over the mountains here in Las Vegas, which I’m convinced is one of the most beautiful and redeeming things about sin city! My vision for this polish was a deep slate with coppery golden shimmer to mimic some of the beautiful colors seen every night here. Emma started mixing a bit of blue, a bit of black, and of white. I kept prompting her to add a bit more of this, a sprinkle more of that, a touch of purple, more blue.

Finally we had the perfect slate-y base, and, since there isn’t a copper shimmer (yet! There may be someday – they’re looking to expand their offering of shimmers and glitters in the future), we decided to add the blue pearl, a bit of golden shimmer, a bit of rosey pink shimmer, some red shimmer, and a sprinkle of bronze! We mixed it all up and as the little mixer whirred, the polish was transformed into a perfect gunmetal with a warm tinge of shimmer. The name was inspired because Emma said that it was a great warm gunmetal… so channeling my love of the Beatles, I decided to name it ‘Happiness is a Warm Gunmetal’. It’s insanely pigmented, and a great shade, if I do say so myself! 😀

I had another shade rattling around in my head as well – a bright turquoise with copper shimmer, and Emma was happy to try to oblige. We mixed up a gorgeous turquoise, brighter than a Tiffany blue, but not too bright, and then we added a bit of red shimmer (at my request! Emma cautioned me that it would darken the polish and affect the shade, but I decided to try it anyway!), this addition deepened the shade, and gave it a slightly succulent green tinge instead of the bright shade we started off with. I’m sooo not mad about it!

Next, we added tons of golden shimmer and a tiny bit of bronze, and a little bit of the reserved original mixture to brighten it up a little bit. We were finished, but for the life of me…I can’t think of a name! That’s where you come in! Leave me your name ideas in the comments! You can stick with the Beatles theme or you can go off on your own and come up with a great name!

IMPORTANT INFO

If you’re interested in visiting the ORLY color lab, reservations can be made on their website, or they accept walk-in clients as well! You can visit their shop at 7621 Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles. They’re open Tuesday – Saturday from 11 am – 7pm, and Sunday from 12 -6 pm.

Another amazing tidbit of information that I discovered is that excess polish is bottled up and donated  to local organizations, one of which is Beauty Bus, which is an organization founded in memory of Melissa Marantz Nealy, a woman whose life ended due to a neuromuscular disease. Her family started it to offer the dignity, hope, and respite that a beauty treatment can provide to families when they need it most.

What do you think? Would you like to visit the ORLY Color Lab? Not near LA? Where would you like to see a location?

I would kill for a Vegas location – I’d totally be a regular! I swear that Vegas is the perfect spot- people are always looking for fun experiences here in Vegas to fill the time between eating, gambling, and shows!

Disclosure: Products and experiences in this post were provided by the brand for consideration. All opinions are my own.

Revitalize Your Skin with Tucson Skin Therapist Recommendations – Medical Grade Skincare and Sugaring Hair Removal

0

Since in Tucson, you live with the sun and dry air, your skin requires special attention. Should you have sun damage, aging signs, or typical skin issues such as dehydration, consulting a professional Tucson skin therapist will benefit you greatly by furthering your complexion. In this amazing environment, skin care requires a particular focus on maintaining your skin in good, healthy, and shielded condition.

Why Choose a Tucson Skin Therapist?

A skin therapist is not merely a professional who performs facials and skin treatments. They have a complete knowledge of different skin types and the environmental conditions that influence them. Whether you’re battling rough desert conditions or sun spots or simply enjoy the prospect of waking up with amazing skin, a Tucson skin therapist will employ a technique that is uniquely designed to meet your own unique needs. They marry technical expertise with practical application to give you your own personal-fitted skin care treatment that perfectly complements your own individual skin tone.

Their education enables them to analyze your skin extensively and decide the most effective treatments, products, and routines for your lifestyle. A Tucson skin therapist will take into consideration the natural hydration level of your skin, how sensitive you are to the sun, and what your concerns currently are – acne, sun spots, aging, or dryness – to provide you with the highest quality care.

Tucson Skin Care: Sun Damage Treatment

Tucson sun exposure is unavoidable, and although the sun is wonderful for delivering a good dose of vitamin D, it also delivers your skin an almighty dose of damage. From burns to the cumulative effect of UV damage, spending too much time in the sun leads to premature aging, wrinkles, and even skin cancer. Most Tucson residents find their skin has accumulated years of sun damage and can have professional Tucson skin care restore and protect the skin from future damage.

A Tucson skin therapist can treat this damage through chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser therapy, all of which are aimed at combating sunspots, wrinkles, and pigmentation. The treatments lightly buff the skin, stimulating new, healthy cell growth. In addition, skin care practitioners will typically prescribe products inducing collagen formation along with daily sun protection to avoid additional damage.

Hydration and Skin Care in the Desert

Tucson’s dry desert climate generally dehydrates the skin and makes it tight. Dry flakiness or a surplus of fine lines are signs that the dryness of the air is the problem. A Tucson skin therapist can help you maintain smooth, healthy-looking skin by providing nourishing care.  Professional facials and moisturizing masks can help restore lost moisture and maintain the skin’s natural barrier. They help skin feel plump and revitalized, particularly under harsh weather conditions that dry it. A skin therapist will also recommend fantastic products to use at home that will provide the right levels of hydration and prevent dryness from returning.

Battling Acne with Expert Assistance

Acne isn’t just for teens – adults get it, too. Whether it’s a stress breakout, hormonal shift, or plugged pores, professional skin care can fix and prevent acne. Your Tucson skin therapist is equipped to know how and has the tools to clean your skin without irritating it further.

Treatments such as exfoliating, acne facial therapy, and deep pore cleaning may destroy bacteria, lower inflammation, and accelerate healing. Chemical peels or lasers can be applied in the instance of stubborn acne to fight the cause of breakouts and ensure that the same does not repeat itself in the future. Along with these in-spa treatments, your Tucson skin therapist will also prescribe at-home treatment with products so that your skin can receive its benefits through normal use and stay clear of blemishes.

The Benefits of Anti-Aging Therapies

Since we’re located in Tucson, where UV radiation hastens the process, we must start early to help your skin remain young. A skin therapist can help you stop further aging through good anti-aging treatments.

Microneedling, fillers, Botox, and laser resurfacing are all wonderful ways to stimulate collagen, tighten skin, and reduce wrinkles. Through the delivery of these cutting-edge treatments, skin therapists revive youthful vitality and smoothes out telltale signs of aging. Periodic maintenance visits and instructions on correct skin care products for aging skin can also assist in keeping your youthful look.

Creating a Personalized Skin Care Regimen

No matter how good professional treatments are, daily care at home is the secret to long-term skin health. Tucson skin therapists will not only care for you but also give you advice on how to create and maintain a personalized skin care regimen. From washing to treating and using sunscreens, they will inform you of the greatest products and habits to fit your skin.

It’s worth observing that what is in another individual’s best interest may not essentially be effective for you, and therefore, it’s vital that your regime is exactly designed to meet your own exclusive requirements.

Whatever your goal is to achieve – improving hydration, eradicating acne, or preventing sun damage – a Tucson skin therapist will be able to craft an individually tailored plan that allows you to maintain a bright, healthy face even after the treatment room lights have gone off.

Preventing Future Skin Issues

Skin care is not merely a means of treating problems that are present – skin care is a way to prevent future problems from occurring in the first place. Tucson skin therapists will not only treat current issues but will equip you with the tools and knowledge necessary to protect against problems occurring in the future. They will stress the importance of applying sunscreen on a daily basis, staying hydrated, and adhering to a regimen specific to the special needs of Tucson’s desert climate.

Using quality products formulated to meet the needs of your skin, you can amplify the performance of professional treatments without risking them being reversed by typical reasons for skin problems like dryness, irritation, and sun damage.

Conclusion

If you wish to receive professional treatment to enable your skin to flourish under the severe conditions in Tucson, it’s the most advantageous decision you can make to receive a professional Tucson skin therapist to induce. From sun protection and hydration to acne care and anti-aging therapy, a Tucson skin therapist will give you personalized skin care addressing your own specific needs.

Whiteheads vs. Blackheads – skinfo

0

Whiteheads and blackheads are both types of acne blemishes that occur when our skin’s natural oil, or sebum, combines with dead skin cells and clogs our pores. Despite their shared origin, there are key differences that set them apart.

Blackheads, also known as open comedones, are characterized by small, dark dots that appear on the surface of the skin. Contrary to popular belief, the dark color is not caused by dirt but rather by a reaction between the trapped sebum and the air. When the pore is open, the melanin pigment in the sebum oxidizes and turns dark, resulting in the characteristic blackhead appearance.

Blackheads are more common in areas with a higher density of oil glands, such as the nose, chin, and forehead. They can be stubborn and may persist if not properly addressed. Fortunately, with the right approach, you can effectively manage and minimize their appearance. skinfo® Clean and Tone Pads (60 Pads, $28) are a great addition to any skincare routine to help control excess oil throughout the day.

Whiteheads, also known as closed comedones, are different from their blackhead counterparts in that they remain beneath the surface of the skin. They appear as small, flesh-colored or whitish bumps that are slightly raised. Unlike blackheads, whiteheads are covered by a thin layer of skin, preventing oxidation and giving them their pale hue.

Whiteheads are often more common in individuals with oily or combination skin types. They tend to be more prevalent in areas where sebum production is higher, such as the cheeks, chin, and forehead. While they can be stubborn, adopting the right skincare routine can help prevent their formation and encourage their resolution. Whiteheads can be spot treated with products such as skinfo® Pimple Patches (36 Patches, $12) or skinfo® Blemish B3Gone (2 oz, $48).

8 Unexpected Ways to Use Taskrabbit for your Wedding or Next Event + a Promo Code!

0

Yup, that’s right, Taskrabbit. I literally don’t think I could have planned my wedding without them and undoubtably were the unsung heroes of my wedding.

As many of you know I planned my wedding in under 2.5 months and in one of the busiest years as everyone (and their mother), who had to wait 2 years during the pandemic was ready to tie the knot. With that I knew every hotel and conventional wedding venue would be booked, and frankly (in case you didn’t notice…), I like to do things my way and wanted to plan something that hadn’t been done before so nothing about a DIY wedding intimidated me.

Except for staffing.

Literally every part of my wedding was done by me or my friends. I picked and planned everything. My planner was me, my day of coordinator, was my college bestie, my officiant, my best friend, my stylist(s), my favorite friends, my florist, my insanely talented friend who completely understood my wants and created an even more perfect vision then I could have imagined. The singers, my Broadway besties… (You get my point). When I say every part except for staffing was a talented friend, I mean it. And even with that I felt completely in control with Taskrabbit over who I was hiring.

Taskrabbit bags Javerick J. lighting candles and setting up my wedding venue.

Here are 8 ways I used Taskrabbit for an Event:

**Keep in mind each person wore multiple hats. Your setup person can also be your door person the first hour, and then go into being your caterer or clean up person.

  1. Set up – We used a raw space so I gave a loose outline of what I wanted where, but relied on my day of coordinator to work with them and make decisions on the space.  They handled everything from chair setup, tablescapes to helping arrange the flower vases around the space, unpack boxes, set up the bar, platters … to probably a ton of other things I probably don’t even know about.
  2. A Runner – inevitably someone needs tape, something printed, ice or something immediately. Having petty cash and someone who can do a quick deli or drugstore run is key. Also, I consider this under ‘set-up’ but separating it for anyone that uses the app and wants to list ‘protentional job includes these tasks…’ I should note that my wedding was located in Union Square, NYC where these stores are walking distance, which is an important distinction since my Taskers were not required to have a car. I did hire pickup people, where I did note a car was required but not for this task.
  3. Door Person – For both my wedding and the next day friends party reception, I hired a door person to make the entry and elevator process seamless. While we didn’t necessarily need a ‘door person’, at least for the first hour it made all the difference to have someone opening the door and welcoming my guests. I also then had the door person handle my food deliveries. I did the food delivery in 2 parts, appetizers would arrive 45 min before the wedding started, so it would be put out when guests arrived and then for the cocktail hour. And in a risky move, I had the dinner arrive during the ceremony to the door person so it could be prepped during the cocktail hour and put out as soon it was ready to the buffet station. Food is often cold at weddings or tastes ‘heated up’, but not at my wedding (although I did have multiple ovens in the space just in case)!
  4. Coat check – For the first hour I wanted guests greeted when they got off the elevator and help in case, they wanted their coats hung.
  5. Catering/Bartender – I didn’t use formal caterers, I ordered catering from my husband and my favorite restaurants and I used Taskers that mentioned handling food/catering experience in their profiles. I had pre-rented platters and ordered off catering menus from local restaurants so they were instructed to put them on platters and plates and organize everything accordingly. As for Bartenders, Taskrabbit has a full list of ones with incredible experience (I used Joe, his contact is at the bottom of this post). He asked in advance if we wanted a specialty cocktail and took care of everything for me. I also gave him a team but wanted one really specialized person in charge of running the show.
  6. Pick up/drop off – The amount of people I hired with cars… First off you have to specify if you need a car or not. Some of the wedding Taskers helped load/unload but for the most part I needed a wide net of drivers at different times over two days. While my main catered food was delivered, I wanted some specialty items that were out of the coverage zone of the restaurants we love. They did everything from picking up my food both days to transferring items from my wedding venue to the next day party venue, everything from the florals, vases, alcohol, décor. I don’t know why I thought I could handle any of this in my car but even same day I was making bookings for drivers as I did not want to lift a finger and everything went perfectly.
  7. Clean-up/break down – I might have tortured my crew on this task. My rentals were being picked up the night of my wedding so the pressure was on to get all the dishes washed and put back in boxes, chairs folded and overall space broken down for pickup. They also handled organizing all my items being used the next day for my reception/after party for pick-up and cleaning up the space. Don’t worry I tipped well. If your tasker does the job of two people tip them accordingly. My crew didn’t complain once, they all worked together and so hard and got it done, as I said, they were my unsung heroes of the night.
  8. Cleaning – Taskrabbit has a vast list of cleaners, I got a great girl who took care of my rehearsal space and then staff to clean the venue.

Tips for using Taskrabbit:

  1. The App is incredibly user friendly – you can search tasks, pick dates or leave the date open and then get a list of people in your area available during your times, as well as their rates, ratings and reviews. You can also list any needs you maybe didn’t see in the description so anyone accepting the job knows the full scope. It’s important to be fully transparent.
  2. Read the reviews – when it came to selecting my on-sight Taskers, I picked people that had reviews about how they were flexible, hardworking, worked well with others and lovely to be around. I also took into account how many reviews they had. Anyone with 50+ great reviews made me feel super confident. I needed flexible, positive individuals as they were interfacing with my guests and other Taskrabbit individuals for the first time. When it came to delivery people, all I cared about was that they were on time and reliable. The rest was negligible.
  3. Judge people not price – This goes with the above, read reviews, not just the price. I get the temptation to pick the person that’s $5-$20 cheaper an hour but if their reviews aren’t great, it’s not worth the stress. Especially, if you’re hiring someone who takes twice as long. With any user generated app, you get a mix of talent, and there were definitely reviews that detoured me from thinking they were a good match for my wedding. I can tell you all of mine were outstanding, professionals with a lot of experience and by taking a few minutes to check each of them out, I had my dream team.
  4. The chat feature is key! – Once you hire someone, you get to chat with them through there messenger feature. That was enormously helpful as it allowed me to get to know them a bit, tell them what I needed and more about the event. It also gives you a sense on if they’re a good fit and you can cancel if not. Certain people I wanted for just one job ie the specialized bartender, others I made a list of what help we needed and if they could fill in depending on the timeline. I also specified things like the venue is 1 level, there’s no heavy lifting… as it is important to be on the same page. The chat feature was also super helpful as it kept me organized so I had all my workers in one place instead of in my email or phone text. Leading up to the wedding were so disorganized, so this helped.
  5. Not everyone has to be hired at the same time. I had the bartender come an hour before the wedding to help setup the bar, but hired a set up crew 3 hours before so all the alcohol would be in the correct area for the bartender and also the space would be set up. I also hired some day-of people the next day to help me pick things up as I completely underestimated how much help I’d need getting items from my wedding venue to the next day party venue (as well as home).
  6. Organize your helpers – Once I had everyone’s name and understanding of their talents, I made a list for my day-of coordinator of who I saw working where and who was the most willing to do whatever. I also gave her access to my account so she our conversations and could message with them and be their day-of contact.
  7. Ask for recommendations. Anyone that’s uses Taskrabbit can share profiles. I’ve shared the profiles of my Taskers with several people needing help with an event, but you can also ask the people you’ve hired to share profiles and Tasker suggestions. A lot of Taskrabbit people have worked with others and are very willing to help.

My team worked completely in tandem. I was super clear that I wanted a fun, loving, and laid-back environment and I also wanted them to have fun and feel comfortable. While I definitely underestimated the number of things that would come up, they all completely rose to the task, and as event experts were able to work with my day of coordinator to make the day perfect.

Sometimes you need a crew that can just ‘figure it out’ and while I gave a loose itinerary of the day: pick-ups, drop offs and schedule of the night, I had to turn my type A personality off and just focus on being the bride and they made it happen!  Also, I have since reused them for other events I hosted and can’t even put into the words the stress they saved me. My wedding also had a focus around sustainability and shopping small, local business, and considering you’re helping local workers felt right. It’s also a lot more budget friendly than hiring a service you know nothing about including how they treat/pay their workers.

As for my Taskers, here’s who I recommend. I’m also noting who I’ve since used on repeat.

Javerick J. (used multiple times) – events superstar (skills include: cleaning, decoration, deep clean, delivery, errands, event staffing, moving, personal assistant, yard work, waiting in line…). https://tr.co/javerick-j

5 Catwalk-Inspired Party Eye Makeup Looks For Christmas

0

Image Credit @ Pierre-Ange Carlotti for Numero China

Party season is the time to lean into sparkle, statement colour, and a bit of creativity, especially when it comes to your eyes. The AW25 runways showed that statement party eye makeup is back, from ultra-bold brows to featherlight gloss and intense smoky colour, there’s something for everyone with this season’s trends. Whether you’re staying minimal or turning up the dial, here are five standout trends from the catwalk, and how to make them work for your next big bash.

5 Gorgeous Catwalk Party Eye Makeup Looks

Chanel AW25

THE LOOK: Bold Graphic Liner
HOW TO WEAR IT:

Chanel’s AW25 makeup turned liner into art, with bold, graphic strokes meticulously drawn to mimic the shape and texture of lashes. This “painted lash” effect was created using delicate, repeated lines that extended beyond the natural lash line, offering an edgy but wearable silhouette. To get this look for your party makeup, use a fine-tipped black liquid or gel liner to draw feather-like strokes along the lash line, layering to create the illusion of extended, separated lashes. Keep the rest of your makeup fresh and minimal to let these graphic “lashes” take centre stage.

Prada AW25

THE LOOK: Bold, Natural Brows & Lengthened Lashes
HOW TO WEAR IT:

This season, Prada focused the eye on statement brows, rich, unkempt arches, brushed into a bold, fuzzy shape, paired with exaggerated lash length using lash-extending mascara. Leave shadow and liner minimal, allowing natural skin texture and fullness of the brows and lashes to stand out for a striking, wearable editorial effect, without the hassle.

Marni AW25

THE LOOK: 90s Grunge
HOW TO WEAR IT:

Party season is the perfect time to revive indie grunge from the 90s. The smoky grunge eye at Marni AW25 featured heavy kohl rimming both waterlines, effortlessly diffused into washes of brick, charcoal and terracotta. Blumarine and Dreaming Eli echoed this indie-sleaze energy, while Roberto Cavalli offered a twist: a cool-toned smoky eye in blue, smoked upward yet sharply defined at the edges. This season’s smoky eye mixes rebellion with artistry. And if you head into the office with a smudge of last night’s mascara under your eyes, you’ll be ready to go again…

Harris Reed AW25

THE LOOK: Super-Sonic Lashes
HOW TO WEAR IT:

If the painted-on lash-liner of Chanel is not for you, try super-sonic ultra-lashes, as seen at the likes of Harris Reed and Courrèges fall shows. Not for the weak of heart, these individually applied lashes loop outwards from both upper and lower lash lines and create dramatic shadows across the face. Make it wearable by shrinking them down a little, but still opting for long, fluttering lashes that will create a dramatic party impact. If you don’t want to go ultra-long, you can still create an impact by trying cobalt blue mascara, as was also seen at Harris Reed.

Victoria Beckham AW25

THE LOOK: Bordeaux Lashes
HOW TO WEAR IT:

It’s red wine season; but not in the way you might be expecting! The star look at Victoria Beckham AW25 was the debut of a soft, wearable bordeaux red wine mascara. Make-up artist Lucia Pica described the look: “The freshness and coolness of the clean skin is the perfect base for that disruption, that spur of the moment flash of burgundy.” This warm mascara tone will suit almost every skin tone, and bring a hint of colour to your party palette.

TOP TIP: You can add a hint of glitz to any of these looks by adding a little shimmer or gloss to your inner eye or upper lid. A clear gloss applied just below the brow will lift your look and freshen your face.

Why It’s Essential For Healthy Hair — Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog

Hair oiling is a scientifically established and commonly used procedure that may be traced back to ancient Indian culture. This article looks at the scientific basis for hair oiling and how it may be used in modern hair care.

Understanding Natural Sebum Production

Sebum, a natural oil produced by the scalp, is similar to the body’s hair conditioner and keeps hair safe and healthy. However, a number of factors, including environmental factors, hair washing, and style, might contribute to either too much or too little moisture.

Scientific Mechanism of Hair Oil

Hair oil works by covering the hair shaft with a protective layer. This barrier has several uses:

  • Stops the loss of moisture

  • Lessens harm from the outside

  • Supplies vital nutrients.

  • Enhances the structure of hair

The capacity of hair oil to interact with the hair’s three layers determines how effective it is:

  1. The outer layer, or cuticle

  2. The middle layer, or cortex

  3. The inner core, or medulla

Primary Benefits of Hair Oiling

1. Hydration Enhancement

If you buy hair oil from a reliable brand, it will optimally hydrate hair by:

2. Growth Stimulation

Oil application as a physical procedure encourages hair growth by:

  • Increased flow of blood to the follicles

  • Better distribution of oxygen to roots

  • Follicle stimulation for hair

3. Breakage Prevention

Breakage is lessened with hair oil by:

4. Scalp Health Improvement

Frequent oil application improves the condition of the scalp by:

5. Environmental Protection

Hair oil can provide protection against:

  • UV radiation

  • Air pollution

  • Temperature changes

  • Styling heat

Selecting Appropriate Hair Oil

Coconut Oil

Characteristics and advantages:

Almond Oil

Stylish Warm Winter Boots

Warm winter boots have long been associated with utilitarianism — they’re meant to keep your feet warm and dry during your commute or when you’re out in the elements. But they can be styled in so many ways that they’ll never look like a pair of old galoshes again! Here are some ideas on how to style snow boots for women.

Leggings Or Skinnies

If you have a pair of skinny jeans (or leggings) in your closet, this is an easy way to style your snow boots. Simply pair the two together and you’re good to go. For this look, choose a pair of dark wash jeans or deep blue leggings so they don’t compete with the colour of the boots.

Leggings are an excellent choice because they can be worn with almost any outfit. You can pair a faux leather legging with a cute crop top and snow boots for women for a chic look that will keep you warm but also stylish.

Bomber jackets have been around for years and have gone through many different iterations since their inception. The modern version — which is still very much in style — is sleek and streamlined with clean lines.

Pairing a bomber jacket with a dress is a great way to add some style to your winter wardrobe without looking too overdressed for the season. Try wearing a white dress with black leather boots for an edgy look that’s perfect for parties or nights out on the town.

A Physician’s Natural Treatment Approach

0

I didn’t just read about perioral dermatitis in a dermatology textbook—I learned about it by living with the condition on my own face. For years, a red, bumpy, itchy rash around my nose and mouth made me feel frustrated, self-conscious, and totally lost. As a physician, I had quick access to prescription treatments, and tried several of them without success. As a natural skincare formulator, I was determined to solve the puzzle in a more sustainable way. My own experience with this condition played a huge role in the birth of Osmia Skincare—because I realized just how many people were struggling like I was, and how few gentle, effective options were out there.

This post is here to help you understand what perioral dermatitis is, what causes it, and most importantly, how to manage it—because there is hope, and healing is absolutely possible.

What Is Perioral Dermatitis?

The name translates to “inflammation around the mouth,” but it can also show up around the nose and even the eyes, where it’s referred to as periocular dermatitis. It looks like a cross between eczema and acne, and feels like a hot, red, irritated mystery. The rash often includes the following:

  • Small, red bumps (sometimes with whiteheads)

  • Burning, itching, or tightness

  • Flaky or dry skin

  • Clear borders around the lips (the area immediately outside the lips is usually spared, as are the lips themselves)

It’s often misdiagnosed as acne or a stubborn patch of eczema, which leads to treatments that can actually make it worse. The photos below give you an idea of the many different appearances of perioral dermatitis, and were shared with us by real customers who gave us permission to share them here.

What Causes Perioral Dermatitis?

One of the trickiest aspects of perioral dermatitis is that the causes are unique to each person who has it, and it’s rarely caused by one single thing. For example, one person might have it from stress and using too much beef tallow, where another person’s dermatitis comes from pregnancy, fluoride, and stress. Here are some of the most common triggers:

  • Overuse of topical steroids (even over-the-counter hydrocortisone) and topical steroid withdrawal (TSW)
  • Fluoride in toothpaste
  • Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate in shampoo, toothpaste, and laundry detergent
  • Heavy facial creams or ointments (tallow)
  • Synthetic fragrance or harsh skincare ingredients
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Birth control pills
  • Overexfoliation or over-cleansing
  • Certain bacteria or yeast on the skin (though not always the main culprit)
  • Stress (almost always a factor, either initially or once the condition is present)

In short, it’s usually the result of disrupting the skin barrier and confusing the skin into a state of chronic inflammation.

My Experience with Perioral Dermatitis

My rash first popped up during a very stressful period of my life and made me feel completely disconnected from my skin. I tried to cover it with makeup (bad idea), and I kept layering on more products (worse idea). I thought I was helping—but I was feeding the fire. When I formulated and started using our Black Clay Facial SoapI finally started to see some improvement. Encouraged, I developed our Purely Simple Face Creamand that simple, two-step routine helped me find my way back to healthy skin.

At this point, we’ve helped thousands of people calm this condition down, and I’m actually grateful to my own face for being my greatest teacher. But the healing process requires patience, consistency, and a serious commitment to simplifying your skincare routine, as well as making some lifestyle changes to support your skin.

To this day, if I start using the wrong products on my skin (too many oils) or stop paying attention to my stress levels (time to go meditate, girl), I see early signs of a flare-up within a few days.  Luckily, I know that if I go back to my simple routine and bring some awareness to stress management, I’ll be back on track quickly.

Can Perioral Dermatitis Go Away On Its Own?

Some cases of perioral dermatitis may improve without treatment, especially if you stop using irritating facial and household products. But in most cases, it requires a targeted skincare routine and lifestyle changes to resolve completely. Doing nothing might help temporarily, but healing fully often takes active steps toward barrier repair and inflammation reduction.

Natural Treatment for Perioral Dermatitis: A Simple Protocol

Dermatologists often prescribe topical steroids or oral antibiotics to treat perioral dermatitis. And while that can help in some cases, it doesn’t always address the root causes, which means the dermatitis will usually return. In my experience, a natural, barrier-supportive approach can often be just as effective—without the long-term side effects of antibiotics or steroids, and with longer-lasting results.

Here’s how to start.

1. Simplify Your Skincare

This is your new mantra: less is more. Cut your skincare down to the bare minimum, ideally using only the two products in our Irritated Face KitBlack Clay Facial Soap and Purely Simple Face Cream—for 2-4 weeks.

Skincare products and practices to avoid:

  • Harsh exfoliants
  • Clay masks
  • Retinoids or acids
  • Occlusive balms or facial oils (yes, even natural ones, even beef tallow)
  • Foaming cleansers
  • Anything with synthetic fragrance

2. Eliminate SLS and Synthetic Fragrance

Not just from your skincare routine, but from your entire life. I can’t stress enough how important it is to get rid of sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate and synthetic fragrance in your hair care, laundry products, and household cleaners. Here’s a link to some specific brands we recommend in all of those categories.

3. Check Your Dental Products

Some people ask whether fluoride causes perioral dermatitis. While there’s no conclusive evidence, many have seen improvement after switching to fluoride-free toothpaste—especially if other triggers are present. Look for toothpaste and dental floss that are fluoride-free and SLS-free (sodium lauryl sulfate), as these ingredients are common triggers. Brands like David’s, Boka, Cocofloss, and Jason make good options.

4. Ditch the Steroids

If you’ve been using a steroid cream, try to taper off slowly. Going cold turkey can cause a rebound flare, so it’s important that you decrease slowly and steadily over the course of one to two weeks, especially if you’ve been on them for a while. You may see a slight increase in symptoms as you wean, but the longer you stay on steroids, the less your skin will learn to heal itself.

5. Be Gentle with Your Diet

While there’s no specific diet for PD, it can help to avoid inflammatory foods (like sugar, dairy, and gluten) and focus on whole, anti-inflammatory options like leafy greens, berries, healthy fats, olive oil, and plenty of water. Some people find that eliminating cinnamon, excessive coffee, and spicy foods can help, too.

What Are The Healing Stages of Perioral Dermatitis?

The signs that perioral dermatitis is healing can look different for everyone. Sometimes the symptoms slowly start to recede, with less redness and irritation. Sometimes it gets a bit more red or dry as it heals. Sometimes it gets noticeably worse before it gets better, especially if you’ve used steroids recently. There’s no one pattern to the way perioral dermatitis heals, but it’s usually slow progress!

How Long Does It Take to Heal?

Healing perioral dermatitis takes time and consistency. Most people see significant improvement in 4–8 weeks with the right approach, but flares can happen—especially under stress or with travel, climate shifts, or hormonal changes.

Stick with your simplified routine, and try not to jump from product to product. Your skin needs time to reset and adjust. And remember, making changes more slowly (as opposed to whipping out the steroids) gets results more slowly, but the results can last a lifetime!

When to See a Dermatologist

If your rash is painful, spreading, or not responding after a couple of months of consistent care, it’s time to see a professional. Ask your derm if they’re open to integrative or functional approaches—you want someone who will help calm your skin, not just suppress it with steroids.

Osmia’s Protocol for Perioral Dermatitis

We’ve created a full protocol based on what helped my skin, and now helps thousands of customers like me manage and calm their skin.

  1. Cleanse with our Black Clay Facial Soap

  2. Moisturize with Purely Simple Face Cream

  3. After 2-4 weeks, if you’re seeing some improvement, you can consider adding our Purely Calm Gel Toner or our Nectar Nourishing Drops.

Avoid all other products, especially makeup, masks, and SPF during the acute phase (use a hat!)

Make lifestyle shifts to reduce triggers—sleep, stress management, gut health, and all the other products you use in your home really do matter.

You can find more details on the Osmia Skincare Perioral Dermatitis Protocol here.

Perioral Dermatitis FAQs:

—Can you get rid of perioral dermatitis overnight?

Nope. No matter what the internet tells you at 2am, perioral dermatitis takes time to heal. With this protocol, you should expect to see change within 4-6 weeks. If you only take some of the steps in this perioral dermatitis plan, you should expect it to take longer to improve.

—What is the difference between perioral dermatitis vs. eczema?

Perioral dermatitis and eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) are both forms of dermatitis—think of them as first cousins. Perioral dermatitis is limited to the skin around the mouth, chin, and nasolabial folds (smile lines), and near the eyes, while eczema can happen anywhere on the body. This protocol will be helpful for both conditions, as many of the triggers for eczema are the same as perioral dermatitis triggers.

—What are the signs perioral dermatitis is healing (and what to expect)

Signs that your perioral dermatitis is healing include decreased redness and dryness, and fewer bumps. Sometimes there is a period of increased redness or dryness before noticeable healing begins, but ultimately you should see more areas of healthy, hydrated skin as your dermatitis starts to resolve.

—Is perioral dermatitis bacterial or fungal?

It’s unclear if bacteria or fungi play a role in perioral dermatitis. Some people believe that demodex mites can cause perioral dermatitis, but they actually cause a condition called folliculitis that is treated differently than perioral dermatitis. Antibiotics can help treat perioral dermatitis, but it’s unclear if the mechanism is attributed to specific antibacterial activity or to breaking a cycle of chronic inflammation in the skin.

Be Kind to Your Skin—and Yourself

Perioral dermatitis isn’t your fault. Your skin is simply telling you it needs less—less stimulation, fewer ingredients, more peace. Listen to it. Support it. And don’t be afraid to reach out to the Osmia team if you need help—we’ve been there, and we’re always happy to guide you back to healthier, happier skin.

Patch Testing Guide – Eyelash Emporium

0

Updated for 2023

Lash and brow tinting treatments have gained immense popularity in recent years, offering customers the opportunity to enhance their natural features without the need for daily makeup application. However, before diving into these treatments, it is crucial to prioritise safety and ensure that potential risks are minimised. This is where patch testing comes into play.

WHAT IS A PATCH TEST?

Patch testing is a great way to make sure your client doesn’t have any allergies to the tint products you plan on using during their desired treatment. It’s a super simple process where you apply a small amount of the product to a specific area of the skin to see if any reaction occurs. It’s a little safety check to keep your client comfortable and ensure a smooth and enjoyable treatment experience for them.

HOW TO DO A PATCH TEST

Patch testing is an important safety procedure performed before applying tinting products to the delicate eye or brow area. This simple yet essential test involves the following steps:

  1. Select the Area: Choose a small area of skin behind the ear or on the inner arm, as these areas are sensitive and similar in composition to the skin around the eyes.
  2. Apply the Tinting Product: Using a clean applicator or cotton swab, apply a small amount of the tinting product to the designated area. Make sure to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer – the new recommendation for 2023 is a 2:1 ratio.
  3. Wait and Observe: Leave the tinting product on the skin for the recommended duration of 45 minutes. Advise the client to avoid rubbing or washing the test area during this period.
  4. Check for Reactions: After the designated time, examine the patch test area for any signs of redness, swelling, itching, or irritation. If any adverse reactions occur, it is essential to avoid using the tinting product on the client.

To ensure accurate results, we recommend performing the patch test 48 hours before the actual lash or brow treatment. This timeframe allows you to thoroughly assess the client’s skin reaction and make any necessary adjustments to the products used.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A PATCH TEST?

Keep in mind that patch tests aren’t 100% accurate – sometimes they may not provide a conclusive answer.

However, if your client doesn’t show any signs of sensitivity to the products you’ve used, you are free to continue with their lash or brow treatment. In cases where your client has experienced a reaction to the products, it’s crucial that you do not continue with the treatments. Above all, if your client has had a severe reaction to the tint, it’s essential to encourage them to seek medical advice.

DO YOU NEED TO PATCH TEST BEFORE EVERY TREATMENT?

Although patch tests can be considered an inconvenience, new guidelines recommend you carry out a patch test on all clients before any treatment – that’s both new and existing clients.

WHY IS PATCH TESTING IMPORTANT?

  1. Allergic Reactions: Performing a patch test helps identify any potential allergies that could cause discomfort or even harm to the eyes. Allergic reactions can be tricky and unexpected, even for those who have had lash or brow tinting before. That’s why conducting a patch test before each treatment allows you to minimise the risk of adverse reactions such as redness, swelling, itching, or irritation, which can be uncomfortable and, in severe cases, harmful to the eyes.
  2. Sensitivities: Patch testing isn’t just about detecting allergies; it’s also about identifying sensitivities to the ingredients in our tinting products. Each client is unique, and some individuals may have specific sensitivities that could lead to mild irritation or discomfort when exposed to certain components of the tint. By conducting this simple test, you can spot any potential sensitivities and make informed decisions. It allows you to either choose alternative products that are better suited for your clients or adjust the treatment accordingly.
  3. Client Safety: The eye area is particularly delicate and sensitive, and any adverse reactions to tinting products can cause discomfort, swelling, or even more serious consequences for your clients. That’s why patch testing is an essential step to ensure client safety. By taking the time to perform a patch test, you can demonstrate your commitment to providing a safe environment and minimising the risk of harm during lash and brow tint treatments.

Remember, a patch test is an excellent precautionary measure to ensure your client’s safety and well-being during their lash or brow treatment. By prioritising their safety and ensuring their satisfaction, you’re not only building trust but also helping them feel confident and beautiful throughout their lash and brow journey with you. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!
