7 Powerful and Cozy Steps for Proper Scalp Care During the Colder Seasons

0

As the temperatures drop and the heaters blast, our skin often takes the hit—and that includes our scalp. Yes, scalp care is just as important as skincare, especially during those chilly months. The steps of proper scalp care during the colder seasons aren’t complicated, but they do require a little extra love and intention.

Let’s walk through some cozy, scalp-saving rituals. These will have your head feeling happy and healthy. This is true no matter how cold it gets outside.

Start with a Gentle Cleanse

Cold weather can make your scalp dry and itchy, and using a harsh shampoo can make things worse. Switch to a sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo that gently cleanses without stripping your scalp of its natural oils. Look for ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil or oatmeal extracts—they calm and hydrate while keeping your scalp clean. If you’re dealing with flakiness, a tea tree or peppermint oil-infused shampoo can help without being overly drying.

Cut Back on the Shampooing

Daily shampooing in the winter? Big no-no. Washing your hair too often can strip away the natural oils your scalp needs to stay moisturized. Aim for two to three times a week, and always follow up with a nourishing conditioner. Dry shampoo can be your best friend on the in-between days, keeping your hair fresh without overwashing

Add in a Weekly Scalp Oil Treatment

One of the most comforting steps of proper scalp care during the colder seasons is a warm oil massage. Not only is it relaxing (hello, spa day at home), but it deeply nourishes and hydrates your scalp. Try warming up some jojoba, castor or argan oil, and gently massage it into your scalp using circular motions. Leave it on for 20 minutes—or overnight for a deep treat—then wash it out with a gentle shampoo.

Keep Your Showers Lukewarm

As tempting as that steamy shower may be, hot water can irritate your scalp and dry it out further. Opt for lukewarm water when washing your hair, and always finish with a cool rinse to seal in moisture and add a bit of shine to your strands.

Moisturize with a Leave-In Scalp Serum

If your scalp feels tight or itchy during the day, a lightweight, leave-in scalp serum can be a game changer. These serums deliver hydration without weighing down your roots and are especially helpful if you spend a lot of time in heated indoor environments. Look for products with hyaluronic acid, glycerin or panthenol for a soothing effect.

Protect Your Scalp from the Elements

Just like you wouldn’t leave the house without a coat, don’t forget to protect your scalp too. Wear a soft, breathable hat or beanie made from materials like cotton or silk (skip the itchy wool). This not only keeps your head warm but also shields your scalp from the cold, dry air that can lead to irritation.

Winter may be beautiful, but it sure can be harsh on your scalp. Follow these seven cozy and practical steps for proper scalp care during the colder seasons. This will help keep dryness, itchiness, and flakes at bay. A little consistency and a lot of hydration go a long way in keeping your scalp balanced and happy all season long. Think of it as self-care from root to tip.

Men’s Skin Care – Boyface by Crystal Waters

0

There is no age set for starting a skin care routine, so you can never be too old or too young to take care of your skin nor it is a matter that has to be gender specific or gender appropriate. Since we all are humans and possess a layer of cells on the outside which protects us from the external pollutants and other hazards, this protective layer too requires attention and care. The only way one can take care of their skin and look presentable even when they are aging is through following a skin care routine religiously – otherwise maintaining that face can become difficult, not just for you but for your pocket too.

So how do you manage a skin care routine, if you are a person who possesses a XY chromosome?

Well, in all honesty it’s relatively easier for men to maintain a skin care routine as compared to women, because of the layers of make-up that they have to fight with…

First things first, identify your skin type before you dive into applying all sorts of creams, lotions and similar products on your face or body. Your skin can range from being sensitive to normal or dry skin. After deciding upon your skin type you can shop for products accordingly.

Then, set a three step process which will make up your skin care routine. Yet again, it will comprise of cleansing, exfoliating, shaving, repairing, and finally moisturizing.

Cleansing has to be done once a day at least to get rid of the buildup, impurities and sweat which gathers up on your skin like a fine layer of frosting. However, while cleansing make sure the products you are using are not harsh, instead go for products that are organic or have glycolic and salicylic acid. Cleansing will open up pores and remove impurities.

Exfoliating skin a must because in a way it is a deep cleansing; as it removes the dead skin cells and residue that was not removed during cleansing. You never want to moisturize dead skin, that will get you no where. Moreover, its ideal to exfoliate skin before shaving as it makes the shave easier and smooth. However, the perception of deep cleansing and the satisfaction of cleaning something completely can make you overdo your skin with a exfoliator so make sure your exfoliator is gentle with no harsh chemicals. For best results you can use the new Boyface Daily Exfoliating cleanser, as it cleanses and exfoliates the skins at the same time- and it’s a must for Men! It’s plant based and Paraben free.

For best results on your skin, shave immediately after shower, use post shaving treatment products . Then repair your skin with a firming cream or vitamin C serum. You can even use a eye-firming serum.

Then you know the drill, moisturize it all you want because dry skin means nothing more than a welcome proposal to fine lines and wrinkles and worst- sagging skin. Look for true moisturizing ingredients in your products like glycerin and shea butter.

And if even after doing all this you have some underlying skin issues, book an appointment with a dermatologist asap!

How to Create a Textured Volume Lash Set with Spikes and Fans — EBLLashes

0

Want to elevate your volume sets with a little extra dimension and style? Let’s talk about the textured lash set—a fan-favorite look that combines varied lash lengths, strategically placed spikes, and soft volume fans to create a wispy, layered finish that clients love.

In this guide, we’ll break down:

  • What makes a lash set “textured”

  • How to design a balanced map using spikes + fans

  • The exact products used to create this look (including our best-selling brown lashes!)

💡 What Is a Textured Lash Set?

A textured lash set is created by mixing different lengths of lash extensions within the same set—usually combining shorter volume fans with longer, more defined spikes. This creates dimension, movement, and a more natural or wispy effect, depending on your styling.

It’s a go-to style for clients who want volume without uniformityand a great way to show off your artistry as a lash tech.

📍 Lash Map Breakdown: Spikes + Fans

Here’s the exact map used in the photo above:

🟫 Spikes (Black Numbers):
Longer, single lashes (13, 12, 11, 10) placed consistently across the lash line to create height and shape.

🟤 Fans (White Numbers):
Shorter volume fans (10, 9, 8, 7) placed between spikes to add density and soft fullness.

This particular map creates a balanced, eye-opening effect while keeping the texture soft and fluttery.

Pro Tip: Vary your fan width to create more movement and dimension between sections.

🧰 Products Used in This Set

This textured volume lash set features:

  • Brown CC Curl Lashes – .07 Diameter
Rich, soft brown lashes that give a more natural, dimensional finish—especially on lighter lashes or fair skin tones. The CC curl adds just the right lift without going too dramatic.

  • Clear Adhesive
Perfect for creating clean, seamless spikes—no black glue dot at the base. Also a great option for sensitive clients or those wanting a softer, no-liner look.

✨ Tips for Creating the Perfect Textured Set

  1. Place Spikes First
Spikes act as your “anchors.” Start by mapping and placing them across the lash line, then fill in with fans.

  2. Use Narrow Fans Between Spikes
Keep the texture crisp by using narrow volume fans between the spikes—this prevents the look from becoming too fluffy.

  3. Layer Your Lengths
Mix lengths within your fans (ex: 8–9–10) to create layered depth.

  4. Stick to the Map—but Flex as Needed
Everyone’s eye shape is different! Use the map as a guide, but always adapt based on the client’s natural lash line.

  5. Use a Tweezer with Precision Grip
We recommend our Ultra Tip Tweezers for placing both spikes and delicate fans.

The Nailasaurus | UK Nail Art Blog – For Questions About My Ginger Hair

0

My hair is definitely one of my more stand out features – especially when I actually take the time to style it nicely. Now although red hair runs in my family, it unfortunately skipped me so I don’t have the honour of being a natural redhead.

I get a lot of questions about my hair and so that I can answer them properly, I’ve written this post for people who want to know more about how I get this colour and look. In truth, the colour was a happy accident so don’t consider this a guide… it’s more a loose re-telling with some hints and tips.

My Origin-ger Story

Orange hair was never the plan.

It was 2011, summer was approaching, and I had decided I wanted my hair to be caramel brown. I’d been dying my own hair since I was about 13 from boxes and at this point it was dark brown. I knew my only option to remove the build up of dye was bleach, but I knew it was risky. I was broke and couldn’t afford to get it done properly at a salon. Even if I could have, I probably would have attempted it myself first because I like messing with my hair! So I knew better, but I bleached it anyway. I can already see you nodding your head knowingly… guess what happened next!

Of course I ended up with a patchy mess that was orange at the ends and bright white near the roots. No biggie – just a rite of passage for the at home hair-experimentalist – but now I was in a pickle. All things considered, my hair was still in reasonable condition but the ends weren’t light enough for my caramel brown to take. I didn’t want to put it through another round of bleach so my options were:

1. Give it all up and go right back to dark brown
2. Attempt to balance out the colour by applying an auburn shade over the top, then figure it all out later

Well, you can guess which one I went for – option 2!
The shade I chose was Clairol Nice N’ Easy in Natural Light Auburn which is still available!

Over the years, I opted for increasingly outlandish shades of orange and this is where I’m at now.

My Hair Dye

The shade I use is L’Oreal Paris Preference Infinia Paprika Power (P78). There’s no other way to describe it than ‘vibrant orange’! Sometimes I like to think it could pass for natural, but really I’m not fooling anyone.

I was using Mango Intense Copper (78), from the same range, for many years until L’Oreal cranked up the colour intensity with the release of Paprika Power.

Mango Intense Copper is a more natural hue of orange and people would often assume it was my natural shade. If you’re making your way up the orange scale, it’s worth using that one as a stepping stone.

Dye for Ginger Hair

The In Betweens

Red shades are notorious for fading quickly, so in between the ‘big’ dying sessions I sometimes give mine a helping hand with a semi-permanent dye to give it a colour infusion without causing any lasting damage. This is a recent addition to my routine, but being able to slap on a bit of extra colour in 20 minutes between dye jobs really brings my hair back to life when it’s lacking lustre.

I just apply Bleach London non-permanent dye in Tangerine Dream all over and leave it to develop for about 20 minutes.

Haircare Favourites

Tresemme Reverse Sysem

My haircare routine changes a lot but at the moment, I wash with Tresemme’s ‘Reverse System’ – a pre-wash conditioner and then a shampoo. I’ve definitely see a volume boost when I use these without any of the stickiness you so often get with volumising products.

John Frieda Nourishing Oil Elixir

No matter how often I get my hair trimmed, I always seem to have wispy ends so I use John Frieda Nourishing Oil Elixir applied sparingly to the lengths after drying/styling. It keeps my hair soft, tangle free and smoothes over any flyaways. This stuff lasts forever. I can’t even remember when I bought it, but it was a long while ago!

VO5 ‘Plump It Up’ Blow-dry Spray

If I know I’m going to be styling my hair, I use VO5 ‘Plump It Up’ Blow-dry Spray ahead of time. I spritz a little in to my wet hair and brush it through before blow-drying. It adds volume and gives enough hold to keep loose curls in all day. Too much of it makes my hair feel sticky but I’ve found that happy place where I get just enough hold and it still moves naturally.

Olaplex No.3

Every 4-6 weeks, I treat myself to a round of Olaplex No.3. It’s the third step in a salon system designed for coloured hair but you don’t need to have used 1 & 2 to get a kick out of No. 3. It stands on its own to ‘repair the hair from within‘.

I apply it to damp, unwashed hair, cover with a shower cap for 1-2 hours, then wash my hair. It’s a pricey product but I’ll definitely be repurchasing. I can really tell the difference after a treatment – my hair feels revitalised and so much thicker. If you have coloured hair and feel like it could use a bit of extra energy, you should give it a try.

Hair Care Favourites

Styling

Most days I don’t bother styling my hair. It’s naturally somewhere between wavy and curly and most of the timeit dries frizz free and with a bit of movement in it. When I do style my hair, I always go for curls!

My favourite styling tools are the Babyliss Curling Wand and Tresemme Perfectly (un)Done wand. In the images from this post, I used the Tresemme wand. The Babyliss gives tighter curls but they hold a bit longer and can be brushed out to create lovely waves.

Wavy Hair Styling Tools

Hopefully that covers everything! Please leave a comment if you have any more questions and I’ll get right back to you.

Types of Skin Discoloration & How to Get Rid of Them Fast

0

As an Expert Esthetician with 35 years of experience one of the questions I get asked most is, “How can I get rid of skin discoloration?” I get this from teens all the way up to seniors since discoloration affects most everyone. We all want our skin to look flawless without having to hide under makeup to get that even-toned look that we desire.

Let me quickly explain the causes of unwanted discoloration of skin and then we’ll get right into my expert action plan that will get you on your way to loving the skin you’re in.

What Causes Skin Discoloration?

Discoloration is an overproduction of a pigment called melanin. Genetics, sun exposure, hormones and injury to the skin (hello blemishes!) are the most common causes. Once the melanin factory turns on, it can be hard to calm fussy pigment cells back down. This is why it’s so frustrating because they can take months to go away – especially the deeper your skin tone is.

There are Four Types of Skin Pigmentationfour types of skin discoloration

Melasma

Large, dark brown and/or grayish patches that usually appear on the forehead, cheeks, or around the mouth. Melasma is usually caused from hormonal changes from menopause and pregnancy and for those taking birth control pills, too. In my professional experience, I never see it in the teen years, but see melasma most often for those in the 30’s for women (the pregnancy years).

Since the goal is to put melanin cells to sleep so they can fade, a lot of people work their skin into overdrive by over-exfoliating at home and getting too aggressive with chemical peels and microneedling procedures only to find that in doing so, they actually keep those cells awake. Their efforts to get rid of discoloration can often make it get worse.

I’m constantly telling people that we need to “put the fire out” so when we focus on calming and soothing skin inflammation, discoloration can start to fade. Sometimes, less is more with melasma.

Post-breakout marks

Also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) these are small, individual dark. red, purple spots that are left over from trauma to the skin, whether that was a blemish or even bug bites, cuts, or scratches.

The key to prevent post-breakout marks and scars is this:

  1. Preventing breakouts from appearing in the first place. Easier said than done but consulting with a skincare professional who specializes in acne (like me!) can help you set up an action plan to help the type of acne you have because after all, not all breakouts are equal. As I wrote in this post, Tea Tree Oil can help with acnecan help a lot with blemish prevention.
  2. When a breakout appears, you MUST treat the blemish with the right spot treatment at the right stage of the life cycle. Read all about the life cycle of blemishes to prevent unnecessary discoloration.
  3. Don’t pick. Tempting, I know but it’s important to understand that you are creating a post-breakout discoloration that will last longer. Read how to stop your skin picking habit – once and for all.

I had a client who was a lifelong picker and you can see the damage that showed up even much later in life.

Age/Sun Spots

These range from light brown to dark brown in color and are a result of cumulative sun exposure brought to life starting most often in your 40’s since pigment cells rise to the surface with age.

Deeper skin tones are more prone to having more melanin in the skin so they will experience this more than lighter skin tones, but everyone will get this to a certain extent. So consider it just part of how the skin will inevitably show aging.

Discoloration from age does not just show up on the face, it can appear on the neck, too. There is a condition called poikiloderma and I personally deal with this. Read about the discoloration on my neck and how I improved it.

Then of course, the chest has to get in on the discoloration fun, too. I had a really, really bad sunburn once and the discoloration damage still shows up years later. See the sun damage on my chest.

Freckles

Small brown spots brought on during childhood — freckles are a genetic condition. When everyone is born, they come out of the womb with perfectly pigmented skin (you’ve never seen a baby with freckles, right?) but as early as age three for those genetically prone to them, they can start to appear once their skin is exposed to the sun.

People who have freckles somehow think they have more sun damage on their skin than those who don’t have them but this is simply false. Freckles, while a form of discoloration, are simply genetic from overactive melanin cells. One of your parents most likely has them and they seem to be most common in redheads.

It’s actually trendy right now for people to use makeup to get freckles, like my client Sabrina Carpenter who applies them to get that “cutesy” effect in this picture of us.

But like all discoloration, heat from the hot sun, saunas and steam room can exacerbate them.

My Discoloration Action Plan At Home

Okay, so now you know many of the ways that discoloration can be brought out, so now what? Through all of my education, training and having touched thousands of faces through the years, I have come up with the best strategy for home to, at the very least, keep discoloration from getting worse, but if you’re really diligent and committed, you absolutely should see visible improvement. My clients love the results they see with this plan and you should, too.routine for skin discolorationroutine for skin discoloration

#1: Put melanin cells to sleep

When pigments show on the skin, they are in their active stage, and the goal is to encourage them to settle down. The research shows that using a vitamin C serum will help interrupt signals sent to melanocytes to help them fade more quickly.

But of course, you DON’T want to get a vitamin C acid burn, so I recommend a stable, no-sting using Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD Ascorbate) like found in Vitamin C&E Treatment. This will quickly help interrupt signals sent to melanocytes.

A newer ingredient, that is also very effective to fade visible red, purple and brown hyperpigmentation is tranexamic acid, It’s a synthetic form of the amino acid lysine. It’s not an acid that exfoliates, but it does have proven brightening benefits by reducing excess melanin without bleaching the skin.

Using a toner morning and evening after cleansing with this ingredient, is very effective for targeting stubborn hyperpigmentation. HyperFix Fading Toner is a product that I recommend using all throughout the year, including summer when pigment cells are most active.

#2: Dissolve unwanted pigment cells with an exfoliating acid

When applied to the skin, acids like glycolic, malic and lactic acids work to lower the pH of the skin and put it in an acidic state so discolored cells are dissolved and digested to allow for removal.

This includes leave-on overnight serums like Pore + Wrinkle Perfecting Serum or a once-a-week exfoliating treatment like Triple Berry Smoothing Peel.

#3: Lift off discoloration with a gentle scrub

This is KEY and often overlooked. Facial scrubs have gotten unpopular in recent years (here’s why) as acids gained popularity but as long as a scrub is gentle using round beads, when massaged over the face for 60 seconds, it truly gives instant gratification to lighten the appearance of pigment. These physical exfoliators are essential to use 2-3 times a week if you really want to see an improvement.

Triple Berry Smoothing Scrub is exceptional for instant brightening, and your skin will love it. (Skeptical of using a facial scrub? Read why scrubs are crucial for removing discoloration.)

#4: Block daily UV light with sunscreen even when indoors

We all know the importance of daily sunscreen, but…you must use it during ALL daylight hours. So what does this mean? If you are in your home all day and daylight (even if it’s cloudy) is coming through windows and seeing your skin, it is keeping those unwanted pigment cells awake. Remember, the goal is to put melanin cells to sleep. Code word for…go away!

Where I see this the most is for oily, acne-prone skin types. They are afraid of using sunscreens since so many of them are heavy and loaded with oils and can lead to breakouts, so people will avoid them. But what if you could use a sunscreen that WON’T clog the pores? This is where Weightless Protection SPF 30 comes in.

#5: Give extra protection with foundation makeup

In the spirit of blocking UV light, did you know that makeup, even if it doesn’t say it has sunscreen in it, will act like sunscreen? This is because makeup is formulated with iron oxides, which are ingredients used in physical-blocking sunscreens. To ensure you are truly protecting your skin from having contact with damaging UV rays, think of foundation makeup as an extension of your skincare. I wear it during all daylight hours, no matter what.

If you’re someone prone to breakouts, foundations can be challenging as they are notorious for clogging the pores. See my favorite foundations for oily, acne-prone skin types.

So, there you have it. This is my best, at-home action plan to help get rid of skin discoloration faster.

Say hello to more even-toned skin — The Renée Way.

As for professional treatments, there are absolutely procedures that are beneficial for fading stubborn hyperpigmentation. This includes chemical peels and laser treatments. Consult with a trusted esthetician or skincare professional for which treatments are the best for you.

Calendula is from the plant family asteraceae. Many of calendula’s historic uses are skin-

related. Calendula is a native of the Mediterranean area. Today it grows in most temperate regions of the world.

The ancient Romans gave it the name calendula because the flowers bloomed on the

first day of every month of the “calends,” their calendar. The plant with the bright yellow

and orange flowers was later given another name in honor of the mother of Jesus: Mary’s

gold. Later this was shortened to marigold.

Historical uses

One of its first uses was to treat scorpion bites. In the Middle Ages, it was widely used for

warts, skin blemishes, and bedsores. It has long been a remedy to relieve pain and swelling

of a bee or wasp sting. People used to just pick a calendula flower and rub it on the affected

area.

Current example

Years ago I was doing a demonstration of our products in Alfalfa’s, a popular health food

store in Boulder. A woman came hopping over to my table and said she had been stung by

a bee just outside the store. She asked if I had anything to reduce swelling and help the

pain. I gave her a sample of our herbal moisturizer, which contains a high content of

calendula; she applied it immediately and went to do her shopping.

Less than five minutes later she came back and said, “What is in this stuff? It took away

the pain and reduced the swelling already!” She was ecstatic; I should have had her write

a testimonial then and there! I know it was a combination of all the healing herbs in our

herbal moisturizer, but I’m sure the calendula was the foremost herb at work.

In 1987, a monograph on herbal medicinal substances presented by the West German

Federal Health Authority confirmed that calendula flower petals have an inhibiting effect

on inflammatory processes, and that an infusion of calendula has a healing effect on

cracks, bruises, and burns.

Constituents of calendula

On a zero-moisture basis, the seed contains 30 to 37% proteins and 40 to 45% oils. The

flowers contain the amorphous calendulin, analogous to bassorin, traces of an essential

oil, and mucilage, along with other plant chemicals. The pigment consists of beta-carotene,

lycopene, saponins, and phytosterols. The fresh plant material contains the analgesic

salicylic acid, and the roots contain inulin.

Importance of carotenoids

Probably the most beneficial of the chemical constituents are the carotenoids, which are unsaturated pigments, mostly yellow, orange, or red. They occur widely in many plants.

Carotenoids are recognized as substances of great importance for all bodily functions,

particularly to help the skin regenerate itself. This would contribute to calendula’s anti-

inflammatory and wound-healing functions. Carotenoids are relatively stable compounds

that are soluble in oil. This factor helps to determine what medium is selected for

extraction when formulations are prepared.

Calendula can be used in the form of infusion, tincture, oil, and ointment. All are

beneficial. Depending on the type of extraction used, however, different chemical

constituents will go into the solution.

My experience is that both water and oil extractions are valuable for skin regenerative

properties. The oil extraction is better for wound healing, moisturizers, and in products

created for varicose veins. The water extracts are better for dermal inflammations and in

products for astringency and blemishes. In an oil-in-water emulsion, a formulator can, depending on his/her objective, do the extraction either in oil, water, or a tincture.

Benefits

Many baby products contain calendula due to its complete non-toxicity. It is perfect for

astringent and acne products because of its ability to heal slow-healing wounds such as

those from cyst acne, and because it is an anti-inflammatory and a bactericide. Since

calendula can stimulate the supply of blood to the skin, it makes the skin not only more

supple but also more resistant to mechanical and chemical irritants. This makes it great in

a hand cream for people who have their hands in water and detergents a lot.

It is antiseptic and anti-bacterial. The sap from the stems has often been used for

removing warts, corns, and calluses. It is probably most often found in creams and lotions

for the face because of its regenerative properties that can possibly help reduce wrinkling.

For the same reason, it’s beneficial in after-sun products. Calendula’s benefits make it useful in almost all skin care products.

A magical reputation

In folklore, calendula was believed to have magical properties. A woman who could not

choose between two suitors was advised to take dried calendula flowers, marjoram, and

thyme, grind them to a powder, then simmer them in honey and white wine. Then she was

instructed to rub the mixture over her body, lie down, and repeat three times: “St. Luke,

St. Luke, St. Luke, St. Luke; be kind to me, and in dreams let me my true lover see.” In her

dreams she would see the man she was to marry. If he were going to be a loving husband,

he would be kind to her in the dream, but if he were going to be disloyal, he would be

unkind.

Calendula is an asset to any garden. It is an annual and blooms in Colorado from May

to October. Add some beauty to your yard by growing these hardy, brightly colored, showy,

beneficial plants.

How To Build A Pro Makeup Kit (For Under $1000) – Camera Ready Cosmetics

0

If you’ve been following along with our blogs, you’ve learned the best ways to start building your brand and step into the makeup artist industry. Now while all of that is incredibly important, you certainly are not going to get far without the right kit.

Founded by a professional makeup artist and with over 20 years working with the pro community, Camera Ready Cosmetics prioritizes quality and value with the artist in mind.  Our team of experts understands what makeup essentials an artist needs.

3 Key Things to Consider When Creating your Makeup Artist Kit:

Quality

Multifunction

Sanitation

Quality Matters When It Comes to Makeup Essentials for Your Kit

When we say quality, we are talking about professional-grade products made for makeup artists. Now, while YouTube and Instagram will have a ton of suggestions for how to build your starting makeup kitkeep in mind that beauty bloggers and celebrities are often being paid to push certain products, and quality does not always factor into the equation.

High-quality makeup essentials are not going to include the eyeshadow palette you got with 20+ shades for $15 on Amazon. When purchasing a product for your makeup artist kityou should consider the ingredients, what is the color payoff, and is the product going to lay on the skin well.

Packaging is also important. The product needs to be able to withstand wear and tear, or at least be able to be broken down and redistributed into empty palettes for ease of travel.

Multifunction is a Must for Your Makeup Artist Kit

Not everything in your starting makeup kit is going to be able to have a variety of functions, but the more items you have that can serve different purposes, the better. This will help streamline your kit, save space, and reduce weight.

Examples of this are makeup essentials like brushes that can be used on eyes or lips, shadows that can be used wet or dry, or even lip color that doubles as a blush. It’s really up to you and your imagination as to how you can use items in different ways.

For Your Starting Makeup KitRemember: Sanitation Is Crucial

Remember that you’re going to use this kit on many different people and not just yourself. You must keep not only your brushes and tools clean but also your makeup.

It’s important to not just choose disinfecting sprays and easily cleanable packaged products but also disposable items. Never double dip into your tubes of mascara or lip color.

How you build a starting makeup kit can vary based on your primary area of focus within makeup. Whether you’re looking to work in bridal, fashion, or movies, this makeup artist kit will fulfill your essential makeup needs. Now, let’s start shopping.

Top Skincare & Prep Products for Your Starting Makeup Kit

As a makeup artist, you will be working on many different skin types. The better prepped the skin, the better your makeup application and longevity of wear.

Remember the mantra: Cleanse, Tone, and Moisturize. These steps will help you to better understand the skin you are about to work on and prepare your canvas.

Our product recommendations for this crucial step include:

Bioderma’s Sensibio H2O Wipes

Skin1004’s Centella Toning Toner

Embryolisse’s Milk-Cream Concentrate

Bioderma’s Atoderm Lip Stick

Mehron’s Skin Prep Pro

Camera Ready Cosmetics’ Oil Free Makeup Remover

Foundation Must-Haves for Your Makeup Artist Kit

As a makeup artist, you must be prepared to accommodate a wide range of skin tones. Cream palettes are the perfect makeup essentials for your starting makeup kit because they offer a diverse selection of colors, and they work well with most skin types. Not to mention they are compact, so they take up less space than 10 liquid foundation bottles.

While Camera Ready has many high-quality foundation options, we have narrowed our favorite makeup artist kit selection down to the RCMA VK Foundation Palettes or RCMA Kevin James Bennett Complexion Palette. What is great about this product is its versatility. Use the product as concealers, blend them down for foundation, or mix with skin prep to create a sheer/tinted moisturizer. The sky’s the limit with this foundation set!

Powder Makeup Essentials for Your Kit

Set it and forget it! If you have not been living under a rock for the last few years, then you have certainly heard of RCMA No-Color Powder. While, again, we carry many comparable high-quality setting powders, RCMA has been a staple in makeup artist kits for many years.

Along with an all-over setting powder, you will want to have some tinted options for contour and highlight. We recommend a space-saving palette with a range of shades. The Mehron Celebre Pro-HD Pressed Palette Highlight & Contour is a multifunctional makeup essential that includes all the brand’s most popular shades.

No Makeup Artist Kit is Complete Without Blush & Bronzer

Let us not forget the importance of color! In keeping with the theme, we have another great palette that offers some of the best color payout on the market. The Woman has so many shade options you could probably find a use for each, but for your starting makeup kitwe suggest the Exclusive Le Femme Blush Palette. The best part of this is that you can easily switch and swap with the brand’s huge selection of refills.

Not every face needs shimmer and shine, which is why we recommend matte blush or bronzers. However, to keep your makeup artist kit versatile, always have some shimmer on standby. For this, we included Danessa Myricks Beauty Lightwork Palette. Just add over the top of your matte colors to create glow and radiance.

Eye Makeup Essentials Every Kit Needs

When it comes to eyeshadowa pro knows less is more. You DO NOT need every shade of shadow in your starting makeup kit. There will be times that a job calls for unique color options, but if you are working with professionals, you will be informed in advance. So, keep your kit streamlined and stick with the makeup essentials.

One of our most adaptable palettes, Ben New Glam Shadow Palette includes 12 versatile shades. Enhance eyebrows, highlight brow bones, create the perfect smokey eye, or dip into Inglot Duraline to transform it into a cake liner. One-stop shopping!

For a long-lasting smudge-proof liner in classic black, we’d suggest the cult favorite Inglot AMC Eyeliner Gel or the Camera Ready Gel Eye Liner.

Finish off the eyes with Ben Nye Mascara. Remember to use your disposable wands! Save space by stocking up on the straight wands and just bend as needed. Add extra “oomph” with some falsities. Ardell Lashes’ Demi-Wispies are another makeup artist kit favorite.

Makeup Artist Kit Lips Essentials

Create the perfect pout with the combination of liners and a great lip palette. Graftobian Super Palette Lip Colors offers 16 long-lasting shades. Mix them together to up your color game. Use your RCMA No-Color Powder for binding, and top it off with shine using Face Atelier Lip Glaze Petite.

No Makeup Artist Kit is Complete Without Brushes & Tools

Brushes are a hard one to narrow down, and every artist has their favorites. For the purpose of simplicity, we have chosen the Bdellium Tools Maestro Series Complete 12pc Brush Set. This synthetic brush set has a little something for everything and even includes a roll-up pouch.

Keep in mind, just because a brush is meant to be used for one purpose does not mean it cannot be used for many more. Find what works for you. Plus, the fewer brushes in your makeup artist kitthe less you have to clean after the job is done.

With that being said, do not forget some of the most important tools of all, your brush cleaners. If you are new to Camera Ready Cosmetics, then you may have not yet heard of Crazy Merman Brush Soap. With a few easy steps, it can pretty much clean anything out of your brushes (even that stubborn Inglot 77). We recommend unscented because you never know if a client is sensitive to smell.

When it comes to the brushes that are doing double or even triple duty with no time to dry, make sure you have Cinema Secrets’ Brush Cleaner on hand for quick a switch.

Finally, to round out your starting makeup kitdon’t forget a mixing palette and spatula. This is the greatest way to stay sterile and also mix shades for more variety. MyKitCo was nice enough to create a palette set that also includes a double-ended spatula. Thank you, MyKitCo!

Setting Spray: The Final Touch to Your Makeup Artist Kit

Just like this blog, we are going to finish off the look with a great setting spray. Makeup artists differ between their favorites when it comes to setting sprays. For this kit, we are going to include Skindinavia Bridal Makeup Finish Spray. The award-winning formula perfectly balances skin for controlling excess moisture and leveling out temperatures, so your hard work stays fresh and flawless for up to 16 hours.

The Perfect Case for Your Kit

Now, let’s put it all away. Bigger isn’t better. Remember that we kept this starting makeup kit streamlined. No need to dig for what you need with the Zuca Artist Backpack. It’s easy to keep everything in order, and cleaning is super easy.

Total Makeup Artist Kit Cost $972.86*

Depending on where you are in your makeup artist career, $1,000 can seem like a lot of money, but just remember you are investing in your future. Now, go forward into your career with your head high because with this starting makeup kityou shopped like a pro!

I Tested The Best Gym Leggings So You Don’t Have To

0

Finding the best gym leggings is no mean feat. I should know. I’ve spent the past half decade trying. The main sticking point? The fact that there are so many activities you might wear your gym leggings for – and they have to be appropriate for them all. But we all know that owning the best gym leggings from the very best activewear brand is integral if you want to motivate yourself to move your body.

When you feel your best, you perform your best – and therefore a pair of sports tights that don’t fall down, don’t turn see-through when you squat and fit you like a glove is guaranteed to make you feel great. So, whether you’re shopping for a morning spin session, a brisk walk with the dog, reformer pilates class, or lovely outdoor run, Glamour writers have been hard at work finding you the best gym leggings to shop this season.

Of course, to the untrained eye, gym leggings can all look the same. But trust us when we tell you that they can vary wildly. It can be a little overwhelming to figure out what the best style, material, and colour is to invest in. After all, they’ll likely end up being one of the most worn and washed items in your wardrobe.

To make sure you pick a pair that truly delivers, we’ve sought advice from some experts, and whittled down a selection of the best gym leggings worth considering this season, and don’t worry there are some plus-size options too.

The best gym leggings, according to Glamour editors:

What to look for in a pair of gym leggings:

While we’re all for the matching sets that the TikTok girlies don to grow their glutes, there’s a lot of science that goes into gym wear. From Lioness players to Olympians, sportswear designer Lily Rice has dressed some of the world’s best athletes — and she firmly believes that fit trumps everything when it comes to choosing your ultimate legging.

“You definitely want to try before you buy and don’t be afraid to pop a few squats and lunges before you purchase. Leggings should feel comfortable around the waist, too loose and you’ll be pulling at them after the first mile, too snug and you won’t be able to stomach wearing them again!” she says.

“An adjuster in the waist is a great asset as it helps personalise the fit. Check the fabric is thick enough that you feel supported and covered. A good test is to hold the leggings in your hands and stretch the fabric, if white starts to show or if you can see through it when given a gentle stretch, then that fabric is way too thin. Make sure the front crotch fits comfortably too, a gusset (the small panel of fabric you get in the crotch of some leggings) can benefit the fit but it’s not vital in seamless leggings.”

How we tested the best gym leggings:

From running your first 5K to unwinding in a yoga class, there are so many different ways to keep fit these days — so your leggings need to be versatile, long-lasting, and comfortable. So I, alongside my fellow shopping writers Georgia, Karina, Ria and Felicity, have put our top picks through their paces. We’ve tested them in a variety of activities like running, walking, spin classes, reformer pilates, barre, and good old-fashioned weight lifting in the gym.

Every pair of leggings that made it into this guide is one that we’d be happy to recommend to a friend. We scored each pair based on fit, how flattering they were, how opaque they were, how well they washed, whether they actually stayed up during workouts, whether they were comfortable, what they were made from, and value for money. You can read more about how we test here.

Why you can trust me:

I have been a shopping writer for the best part of eight years – for six years at Glamour and for two years at other publications. During that time, I have tested hundreds of products in the fashion, beauty and wellness spaces – focusing particularly on activewear. I’ve attended press events, spoken to brand reps and exercised in everything I feature – so you could say I know more than your average gym go-er when it comes to the best kit to buy.
