How To Organize Your Makeup Collection – Besame Cosmetics

0

When was the last time you went through your makeup collection and did a deep clean? Whether it’s a cleanout for the new year or just another item on your spring cleaning checklist, going through your makeup collection and getting it in order is something you should do at least once a year. And you might find that it’s actually fun to organize makeup— you get to look through your collection and find treasures you forgot about! Here are some tips to help you get started organizing your makeup collection.

Less Is More

The first thing to do when organizing your makeup collection is to go through and discard any expired products. Cosmetics don’t last forever, even high quality products! Most makeup has a shelf life of about one to two years. Any older than that, and you may have a product that won’t apply correctly… or worse, even be dangerous. This is especially true of lip products and anything that goes near your eyes.

If your makeup doesn’t have an expiration date on it, or you can’t quite remember when you bought it, try giving it a good sniff. If it smells sharp or rancid or has a chunky or clumpy texture, you should throw it away. This also goes for your nail polish, which will definitely change texture as it ages. If you really love the packaging, you can carefully and thoroughly wash it out and keep it around for decoration, or you might even be able to upcycle it and create something useful!

After you’ve thrown out any expired products, take a look at your collection and think about what you use regularly, what you use occasionally, and what you use rarely or never use. You might find that a classic red lipstick is your go-to for daily wear, and that you have a few things that you wear maybe once a month or for special occasions. You’ll definitely want to keep those if they’re still safe to use. But what do you do with those products you just aren’t in love with?

For products you never wear, especially products you don’t like, don’t feel bad about tossing them! But if you have in-date products that you haven’t opened or are very gently used (like a lipstick you wore once), you can actually donate these items! There are several organizations that will take your unused products, sanitize them, and give them to people in need. Makeup is a little luxury that can really help someone feel more comfortable and confident!

Your brushes aren’t immune to spring cleaning, either. You should focus on having the right brushes to create any makeup look you like, and make sure that the brushes you do keep are high quality. If you’re at the other end of the spectrum and only have one or two brushes, you might want to invest in a good makeup brush set. This will help you when you’re putting looks together!

Makeup Storage

If you keep your makeup in the bathroom, you really should move it somewhere else. Why? Because the heat and humidity of the bathroom will damage your collection over time. Even if your beauty area is primarily in front of the bathroom mirror, storing it elsewhere will keep your makeup looking great for a longer time.

Whether you use a tote, a bag, a train case, or another storage method, you should make sure that your product cases are clean before you put them away.  For your brushes, you should make sure that you’re storing them vertically with the brush head up, or else in a brush roll. You should also check your brushes for loose fibers; as brushes age, they start to shed. Like everything else, brushes do have a lifespan, and if your brush is shedding too much, it might be time to say goodbye.

For your most frequently used products, you might find it useful to have them displayed where you can easily find them every day. It might be easier for you to keep your favorite lipsticks in a lipstick organizer on top of your dresser or bedside table, along with your go-to lip balm.

Keep It Clean

Before putting your makeup back in its storage, clean the case or drawer by giving it a good scrub! You should also take the opportunity to clean your makeup brushes with some gentle soap and warm water. Go through your makeup and clean it up, too— if there are smudges on your lipstick tubes or fuzz on your cake mascaragently clean those off so that everything is tidy and in the best shape possible before you use it again.

Once you’ve cleaned up your collection, it’s time to neatly organize it. At Bésame, we like to do this by decade, but you can do it by color, style, type of makeup— whatever works best for you! Tell us in the comments: How do you like to organize your makeup?

Normal memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer’s?

0

As we grow older, all parts of our bodies experience changes, including our brains. Forgetfulness is a common part of aging, and everyone experiences mild memory lapses from time to time. For example, we forget where we left things, people’s names, or even appointments. These are typically a normal part of aging. However, if memory problems become more frequent or severe, a doctor should be consulted for evaluation. If symptoms progress to dementia, it can make it difficult to live independently and manage daily activities.

Signs that memory impairment may be more significant include:

  • Asking the same questions over and over.
  • Becoming increasingly confused about time, people, and places.
  • Getting lost in places you used to know well.
  • Having trouble following directions.
  • Not caring for yourself properly—for example, not bathing regularly, eating poorly, and acting in an unsafe manner.

Everyone ages differently. How we age is affected by our genetic factors, which we cannot change, but also by things we have more control over, such as our lifestyle and the environment we live in. Eating a healthy diet, being physically active, and maintaining good social relationships can help us lead a healthy life and decrease our risk of developing conditions (including mental impairment) as we age. So, how do you distinguish between normal memory changes and dementia? And where does Alzheimer’s disease fit in?

MEMORY LOSS

Memory loss can progress through different stages, from age-related memory impairment and mild cognitive impairment to dementia. The chart below explains the differences between these distinctions.

Memory Impairment

Age-associated memory

impairment (considered a

normal part of aging)

Memory difficulties:

  • Are not serious enough to disrupt daily routines
  • Do not affect the ability to complete tasks as usual
  • Cause some difficulty learning and remembering new things
  • Are not caused by an underlying medical condition
Mild cognitive impairment Memory difficulties:

  • Are not serious enough to disrupt daily routines
  • May include other symptoms such as disorientation and difficulty speaking
Dementia Memory difficulties:

  • Are significant enough to disrupt daily routines
  • Make learning new things more challenging
  • Make it hard to complete tasks that were once familiar
  • Cause others to notice changes in behaviours or abilities

WHAT IS DEMENTIA?

Dementia is not a single disease. It is a general term that describes a group of symptoms associated with various underlying conditions. These symptoms cause changes in thinking, memory, and reasoning skills that are serious enough to affect daily life, the ability to function independently, plus behaviours, feelings, and relationships. Some forms of dementia can be reversed; others are irreversible.

The brain is comprised of distinct regions, each of which is responsible for different functions (such as memory, judgment, and movements). When cells in a certain region are damaged, that region cannot carry out its functions properly.

WHAT IS ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE?

Although many people think dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are the same thing, they are not. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60% to 80% of all dementia cases. Increasing age is the greatest known risk factor for this type of dementia. When it affects people younger than 65 years of age, it is known as younger-onset Alzheimer’s or early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s changes typically begin in the brain region that affects learning, and the most common early symptom is difficulty remembering newly-learned information. However, many people experience trouble remembering things sometimes, so having this symptom is does not confirm that a person has Alzheimer’s disease.

Important components of Alzheimer’s are two abnormal structures that can form in the brain, called plaques and tangles. Although most people develop some plaques and tangles as they age, people with Alzheimer’s develop far more and they develop in a predictable pattern. While scientists don’t know exactly how plaques and tangles play a role in Alzheimer’s disease, they do believe that they act by blocking communication among nerve cells.

SYMPTOMS OF DEMENTIA

The symptoms of dementia vary depending on the type of dementia a person has. The table below explains the symptoms associated with various types of dementia.

Dementia Symptoms

Type of Dementia Typical Symptoms
Alzheimer’s disease Problems with short-term memory, paying bills, preparing meals, remembering appointments, getting lost in familiar places
Fronto-temporal dementia Difficulty planning or organizing activities, having trouble communicating with others, acting inappropriately in social or work situations
Lewy body dementia Memory loss, problems with movement or balance (such as stiffness or trembling), daytime sleepiness, confusion, sleep disturbances, staring spells, visual hallucinations
Mixed dementia Several types of dementia can affect a person at the same time, and this can affect which symptoms the person will experience
Vascular dementia Symptoms vary depending on the part of the brain that is affected, and they may overlap with symptoms of other types of dementia.

TREATING DEMENTIA

Currently, there are no treatments that can reverse cognitive decline and cure irreversible types of dementia. However, there are treatments that can help manage challenging symptoms and help maintain the quality of life for individuals living with dementia. Medications that have been approved in Canada for the treatment of dementia include donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine, which improve communication between brain cells, and memantine which helps protect brain cells and improve their function. The medications selected for each patient will depend on the type of dementia the person has, how severe the symptoms are, and how quickly the disease is progressing.

Advances in the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease continue to evolve, offering reasons for optimism about the future of prevention and treatment. For instance, two newer biologic medicines, lecanemab and donanemab are currently under review by Health Canada with the goal of slowing cognitive decline in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Additional treatments like these are expected to emerge in the coming years.

If you have any questions or concerns about any of the symptoms mentioned that you or a loved one may be experiencing, it is important to speak with your healthcare team. Early intervention may help reduce the progression of the disease and improve the person’s individual’s quality of life. If medications are prescribed, your pharmacist can provide guidance on how to take them and help you manage any potential side effects. They can also organize your medicines into blister packs to help with memory concerns and reduce your chances of missed doses or errors. Speak to your pharmacist to learn how we can help support your needs.

How To Relieve Dry Skin on Your Face Overnight

0

Does your skin feel dry, tight, or itchy? If so, you’re not alone. More than half of the adult population struggles with dry skin, and that percentage only increases with age.

This makes relieving dry skin a top priority in your skincare routine.

Stick around to learn what skincare ingredients to use, which ones to avoid, and how to ease dry skin on your face with Juice Beauty.

What Is Dry Skin?

Your skin is designed to be oily. Not excess oil, but the organ depends on a certain amount of health oils, fats, and lipids to stay nourished and perform its job. When skin does contain enough of these good oils, it becomes dry.

Dry skin is a common skin concern that affects almost everyone at some point or another. However, it’s also a skin type. Different from just the occasional dry hands or chapped lips, dry skin types struggle with dryness constantly.

Symptoms of dry skin include:

  • Patches of rough, flaky, or scaly skin
  • Skin redness
  • Itchiness, ranging from mild to severe
  • Skin that feels stretched to tight
  • Cracked skin, sometimes to the point of bleeding
  • Thinning skin
  • Discolored skin that may appear gray, white, or even black

What Causes Dry Skin?

A lot of people know what dry skin is (they may even have it themselves), but they have no clue what actually causes the skin condition. Especially if you’re looking to relieve your own dryness, it’s helpful to know what’s causing the tight, irritated skin so that you can best soothe it.

There are several factors that can contribute to dry skin. Let’s take a look at the most common ones.

Natural Aging

Your skin is already equipped with its own oil-making system. Sebaceous glands in the middle layer of your skin produce about 8 milligrams of sebum for every 10 centimeters of skin every day, which is more than enough to lubricate the skin barrier and lock in your body’s natural moisture.

However, this number is only an average. Not all skin can produce enough sebum on its own.

As you age, your body’s endocrine system starts to slow down — and the androgen hormone that stimulates sebum production does, too. Without this hormone to signal your sebaceous glands to kick into gear, your skin can start to dry out, triggering symptoms of dry skin.

Cold, Dry Air

The environment has a huge impact on your skin. The temperature humidity level of the air around you can determine how nourished or dry your skin feels. Generally speaking, cold and dry climates are the worst for your skin, and can contribute to irritation and flaking on your facial skin.

Dry air is dangerous because it can steal moisture from you. Your skin is always secreting small amounts of water through a biological process called transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

While some of this loss is controlled by your skin, it’s heavily influenced by environmental factors. When the air around is drier than your skin, TEWL rates spike, leaving you with not enough water to keep your skin hydrated.

Hot, Dry Air

Cold air isn’t the only threat to your skin. Sometimes, hot air can be just as dangerous.

Typically, warm air contains a high concentration of water vapor, making it nourishing for your skin. However, the hot air pushed out by heating units — like the furnaces and fireplaces you might encounter in the winter — has an extremely low humidity because it originated as cold air from outside.

Increasing the air’s temperature doesn’t raise it’s humidity. In fact, it can lower it. So while this hot air can feel good on your skin in the moment, in the long run, it is one of the biggest contributers to dry skin.

Overexfoliation

If you have oily skin, exfoliators are your best friend. These scrubbing agents are perfect at clearing out all of the excess oil produced by the skin. However, for skin types that struggle to produce enough oil on their own, these same ingredients can be your worst nightmare.

Dry skin types need to be careful when it comes to exfoliation. While a little but of scrubbing power can help clear away dead skin cells that are contributing to rough patches, too much can rub raw the already-sensitive skin.

Even normal skin types should be careful with overexfoliation, as removing too much oil can leave the skin feeling dry and undernourished as a side effect.

Harsh Soaps and Detergents

Certain face cleansers, body washes, and even hand soaps are formulated with harsh chemicals that can strip your skin’s moisture and irritate your skin. These products are often designed with good intentions: their goal is to absorb excess oil that can clog your pores and cause breakouts.

However, they can’t always distinguish the good oils from the bad. Ingredients like sulfates and colored dyes suck the natural oils from your skin, leaving behind a dry and itchy surface.

Other skincare ingredients to avoid using on dry skin include:

  • Salicylic acid
  • Glycolic acid
  • High concentrations of retinol
  • Alcohol-based formulas
  • Fragrances and perfumes

3 Ingredients To Soothe Dry Skin

While staying away from dehydrating agents is helpful, soothing your skin is about much more than avoiding the wrong ingredients. To truly relieve your dry skin, you need to nourish it with the right ones.

Here are three hydrating ingredients that can calm and correct your dry skin when used in skincare products.

1. Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a powerful natural acid that lubricates your eyes, joints, and skin. It’s what chemists call a humectant — a chemical substance that can pull water from its surroundings and hold onto it. In fact, humectants can hold up to 1,000 times their weight in water.

This quality makes hyaluronic acid one of the most powerful skin hydrators available. That’s why we’ve incorporated it into our STEM CELLULAR® SuperGrape Youth Renew Serum.

Our SuperGrape Serum is made to revive tired-looking skin for a younger, more supple complexion. In addition to hyaluronic acid, this serum is also made with prickly pear juice and rare Sagrantino super grapes grown at Juice Beauty’s own innovation farm.

These ingredients combined are why 100% of clinical trial participants said their skin improved each day when using this product.

2. Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a type of vitamin B (B3, to be exact) that supports your skin health. This ingredient is multi-purpose, meaning it can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions — one of which being dry skin.

Vitamin B, and thus niacinamide, is a water-soluble vitamin, which makes it a powerful hydrating agent. It also happens to be a humectant, just like hyaluronic acid. Niacinamide’s ability to draw in moisture and support your skin is why we’ve included it in our PREBIOTIX™ C-Boost72 Whipped Cream.

This cloud-like face cream drenches your skin in moisture that sets in immediately after use. In clinical trials, participants reported up to 72 hours of powerful hydrating and a visibly instant glow after just one use.

3. Ceramides

Ceramides are a type of lipid that is found naturally in skin cells but is also added to many popular skincare ingredients. They’re so popular because of their role in supporting your skin barrier.

Ceramides make up over 50% of your skin barrier, meaning they are almost singularly responsible for filtering what substances enter and exit your body through the surface of your skin. This means they control how much water you lose. For this reason, we’ve used ceramides to power our STEM CELLULAR® Anti-Wrinkle Overnight Cream.

Our overnight moisturizing cream has intense hydrating properties, making it ideal for dry skin types. In fact, 91% of clinical trial participants noticed increased moisture overnight when using this cream, as well as softer and more supple skin.

Relieving Your Dry Skin Overnight

If it’s not already obvious, let us just state it for the record: the best way to relieve your dry, flaky skin is by soothing it with nourishing and hydrating ingredients.

While morning skincare is important, your nighttime routine is perfectly timed to target skin dryness and dry patches.

Your skin undergoes a lot of biological processes while you sleep: skin cells repair themselves, oils bloom onto your skin, and water seeps from your skin barrier. This makes dry skin types especially vulnerable at night.

By layering up on nourishing skincare before you go to bed, you fuel your skin with all the ingredients it needs to cure dry on your face skin overnight.

Dry & Flaky Scalp: Ginger Scalp Serum By The Body Shop Review

0

Navigating the world of scalp care with a sensitive and reaction-prone scalp can be tricky, especially when you’re dealing with the aftermath of eczema medication like I am. That’s why I was intrigued by The Body Shop’s Ginger Scalp Serum being a fan of their Ginger Shampoo and Conditioner – in fact all of The Body Shop’s hair care range for decades has been consistently good. Promising relief for dry, sensitive scalps, it seemed like just what I needed. But does it really do the trick? Does it work not just for dryness but reactivity and sensitivity? Let’s find out.

What is The Body Shop Ginger Scalp Serum?

This serum is part of The Body Shop’s wider Ginger range, tailored to soothe dry and flaky scalps. It’s designed to be a fix that works between washes, absorbing fast without leaving your hair greasy. The main claims are:

  • Soothes Dry Scalp: Aims to calm down scalp dryness.

  • Lightweight Formula: Non-oily and absorbs quickly.
  • Natural Ingredients: Made with 96% ingredients of natural origin.

The Ginger Range: A Brief Overview

My Experience with the Ginger Scalp Serum

As someone with an ultra-sensitive scalp post-eczema treatment, finding the right care products can be a minefield. I used this serum on evenings, applying it to towel-dried hair. It can be air-dried or gently blow-dried with cool heat. To my relief, the serum did calm my scalp and seemed to hydrate without causing congestion. Its lightweight, clear consistency and the dropper applicator made it easy to use. The scent is of pure, spicy and aromatic ginger, it’s really gorgeous but doesn’t stick around so you can sleep without smelling like a biscuit.

Dissecting The Ingredients of The Body Shop Ginger Scalp Serum

When it comes to scalp care, ingredients are key. Let’s break down the contents of The Body Shop Ginger Scalp Serum to understand what works in its favor and what might be a concern.

The Good

  • Ginger Root Oil (Zingiber Officinale Root Oil): The star ingredient, known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, ideal for calming irritated scalps.
  • Willow Bark Extract (Salix Alba Bark Extract): Acts as a natural exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and reduce flakiness.
  • Soy and Wheat Germ Extracts (Glycine Soja and Triticum Vulgare Germ Extract): These ingredients are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, nourishing the scalp and hair.
  • Panthenol: A form of Vitamin B5 that helps to moisturize and improve hair strength.
  • Sodium Hyaluronate: Helps to hydrate the scalp, retaining moisture effectively.
  • Glycerin: A humectant that draws moisture into the hair, keeping the scalp hydrated.

Potential Ingredient Concerns

The below, whilst could be better, are really not out of the ordinary for a product like this from any brand, particularly at an £18 price point where the’ve weighted it towards the effective ingredients listed above – to say, the shortcuts are not unacceptable.

  • Phenoxyethanol: A common preservative that can cause irritation for some individuals with sensitive skin.
  • Fragrance (Parfum): While it contributes to the product’s pleasant scent, artificial fragrances can be irritants for sensitive scalps.
  • Linalool, Limonene, Citral, Citronellol, Eugenol, Benzyl Alcohol, Geraniol: These are fragrance components that, while natural, can be potential allergens.
  • Sodium Hydroxide: Commonly used to adjust pH, but in high concentrations, it can be irritating. Its presence in a rinse-off product is typically at a safe level.
  • Polysorbate 20: A surfactant that can sometimes be derived from petroleum. While generally considered safe, some might prefer to avoid petroleum-derived ingredients.

Conclusion: Does It Live Up to the Hype?

In a market flooded with scalp care products that overpromise and underdeliver, The Body Shop’s Ginger Scalp Serum stands out. It’s a simple, effective solution for anyone struggling with scalp sensitivity or dryness.

I was honestly surprised by the effectiveness of this serum. The Body Shop’s products often tend to focus more on strong scents and the overall experience, but this serum is a different story. It’s a standout in terms of actual performance, proving to be more than just a pleasantly scented product.

The serum delivers on its promise of soothing and hydrating the scalp without any heaviness or greasy residue. If you’re tired of navigating the tricky waters of scalp care, this product might just be the beacon you’ve been looking for!

Chapped Lips Treatments | Prevention and Home Remedies

0

Cheilitis is one of the most annoying, obsessive-compulsion inducing conditions ever… it’s also known as chapped lips.

Google’s overview tool estimates that there are over 3 million cases of chapped lips in the United States every year.

Winter weather and wind can make even the most moisturized lips become dry, cracked, and painful.

Sometimes though, chapped lips seem to come out of nowhere overnight, causing you to keep licking and biting at peeling lips all day.

So what causes this little annoyance?

You’d be surprised to know it can come from many different things.

Symptoms of chapped lips

What Causes the Lips to Chap?

The lips are an especially delicate area of the skin.

Whereas the skin on our bodies has up to 16 stratum corneum layers (the outermost skin layer) our lips only have 3-5 layers.

This is what makes the lips so soft (and so vulnerable)!

Unlike the rest of your skin, your lips do not have oil glands, so they have no way of rehydrating themselves.

They also don’t have melanin!

This means that they need a little bit more help in healing and protecting them from the elements.

There are about 9 different types of cheilitis, each varying in severity.

Cheilitis simplex is a more severe affliction of chapped lips, usually characterized by tears at the mouth’s corner.

Chapped lips can vary from an annoyance, to pain that plagues you throughout the day.

Bad weather and exposure to the elements can cause lips to dry and crack, but your diet and medications also play a part in your overall lip and skin health.

Licking Your Lips

This is one of the most common causes of dry lips.

When your lips start cracking, it’s almost impossible to resist the urge to lick them, but this only makes it worse.

When the saliva evaporates from your lips, any moisture that was in your lips will evaporate with it.

The enzymes in your saliva that help to break down your food also take action on your lips.

If you can, resist the urge to lick or bite your lips and reach for chapstick instead!

Sunburn

It might sound strange, but your lips can be sunburnt!

Just like the rest of your skin, they need a little extra protection from the sun.

Although it’s rare.

Actinic Cheilitis is a type of skin cancer you can get on the lips.

Going out with lip gloss and chapsticks that don’t contain SPF does even more damage and acts as a tanning oil on your lips.

Autoimmune diseases are usually accompanied by sensitivity to heat and the sun, so make sure not to leave your skin out of your sunscreen routine.

Make sure to look for chapsticks with SPF to moisturize and protect from damage.

Dehydration

By now, you’ve probably heard of the importance of hydration for your skin’s health and vibrancy and the same goes for your lips.

Dehydration also compounds any dryness caused by sunburn.

It’s important to first hydrate from the inside to keep lips firm, plump, and healthy.

Medications

Certain prescription meds such as accutane, propranolol, prochlorperazine, retinoids, and chemotherapy medications can cause your lips to dry out.

If you continue taking these medications and notice your lips are constantly dry, it’s best to keep chapstick handy throughout the day.

Your Diet

A diet high in citrus and vitamin A can also have unfortunate effects on your lips.

The maximum consumption recommendation of vitamin A is 25,000 IU per day so if you’re taking a supplement or eating lots of foods high in Vitamin A (like liver, cheese, and some types of fish), cutting back should restore moisture back to your lips.

Malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies such as iron, zinc, and vitamin B can also cause dryness, so make sure you’re getting plenty of vitamins in your daily diet.

Eczema & Other Medical Conditions

Eczema can also cause extremely chapped lips, called lip dermatitis.

Lip dermatitis differs from your everyday chapped lips in its severity.

Lip dermatitis is usually characterized by scaly, flaky, inflamed patches of skin on and around the mouth and prolonged dryness.

Unlike typical eczema, lip dermatitis is contagious and should be treated by a doctor if it doesn’t improve within a few days.

Thyroid diseases, psoriasis, and diabetes can also cause chapping and discomfort, but it can be managed by using one or a combination of the remedies below.

Treatments and home remedies for chapped lips

11 Ways to Treat Stubborn Chapped Lips & Prevent them from Happening

Chapped lips can vary in severity and pain but there are plenty of over the counter and at-home remedies to help provide relief for even the most rugged lips.

There are so many natural moisturizing ingredients right in your kitchen.

Any of these mixtures can be used in combination with your TLC face masks or overnight to lock in moisture as you sleep.

If you notice that your lips haven’t improved over the course of a few days with treatment or have gotten worse, contact your doctor as they should be able to better identify what is causing your lips to chap and help you find a more tailored treatment option.

1. Don’t lick your lips!

We know it’s hard, but it’ll only prolong the dryness.

Try drawing a small symbol on your hand so that you’ll remind yourself not to lick or bite your lips every time you happen to see it.

2. Forget artificially scented and flavored lip balms.

If you don’t have chapped lips, scented lip balms can make your day a little sweeter but if your lips are already irritated, head for the simple ingredient chapsticks that will provide moisture without any irritating artificial scents.

3. Breathe through your nose.

Have you ever woken up after a night with a cold and noticed your lips are dry?

Frequently breathing through the mouth can dry the entire mouth out, including the lips.

If a stuffy nose is holding you back, no worries, but apply one of the topical treatments below!

4. Drop tobacco.

As if we needed another reason not to use tobacco, smoking and chewing tobacco dries the mouth and lips and can cause mouth cancer and sores.

5. DIY Sugar Scrubs

Sugar scrubs do wonders for getting that dry, peeling skin off of your lips while nourishing and moisturizing the skin underneath.

Just mix 2 teaspoons of sugar with 1 teaspoon of honey, coconut oilcastor oil, or olive oil and massage into the lips until the loose skin comes up.

Then, just rinse and repeat the next day!

We love this solution because it is so easy to do with ingredients you probably already have at home and it tastes sweet too!

6. Overnight Lip Masks

Similar to face masks, there are sheet masks explicitly made to nourish your lips!

Check out our blogfor a full rundown of how lip masks work and how to shop for the right ones or DIY them yourself!

7. Petroleum and Honey

Simple enough, but powerful!

Honey has been proven to improve the skin’s moisture and adjust the acidity of the skin.

Petroleum has been proven to help heal wounds even after surgery.

It can be used on cracked heels, lips, and even a dry nose.

You can use a 1:1 ratio of these two household items and apply them throughout the day instead of chapstick.

8. Cucumber Treatment

That’s it!

If you have an extra couple slices of cucumbers, all you have to do is cut them in thin slices and rub on the lips to give your lips an extra moisture kick.

9. Use a humidifier

Harsh dry air can dry out your lips even indoors.

Humidifiers (especially with essential oils) can help you to relax and get a little extra TLC for your skin and lips.

10. Drink lots of Water

Hydrate from the inside out!

If you have trouble drinking water throughout the day, try adding lemon juice or other flavorings to make it more of a treat and less of a chore. Your entire body will thank you.

11. Don’t Skimp on the Sun Screen

There’s no point in letting your lips get exposed to harmful UV rays and get dried out.

Protect your pout!

Do go heavy on the SPF.

The Skincare Step You’re Skipping (That Could Be Hurting Your Skin!) – Merindah Botanicals

The Skincare Step You’re Probably Skipping (That Could Be Hurting Your Skin!)

Are you doing everything right in your skincare routine, but still feel like your skin isn’t at its best? Chances are, you’re skipping this one essential step!

This step takes less than 10 secondsbut makes a huge difference in how well your skin absorbs moisture, stays hydrated, and looks radiant.

The Secret Step Most People Skip? Toner.

Toner is the missing link in many skincare routines. It’s not just a “filler” step—it preps your skin to absorb hydration better and improves your overall routine.

Why You Should Use Toner

✔️ Restores pH balance – Cleansing can throw off your skin’s pH; toner brings it back.
✔️ Preps skin for serums & moisturisers – Hydrated skin absorbs products better!
✔️ Calms irritation & reduces redness – Great for sensitive skin.

How to Use Toner Correctly

✔️ Apply to a cotton pad and wipe over your face and neck right after cleansing while skin is still damp.
✔️ Use a hydrating toner, not an alcohol-based one that strips moisture.
✔️ Follow up immediately with serum or moisturiser to lock in hydration.

If you’ve been skipping toner, now’s the time to add it in! It’s a small step that makes a big difference in how your skincare products work.

Can You Mix Argireline and Retinol?

0

Argireline and retinol can work together to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and complement each other’s actions in improving skin tone and appearance.

Therefore, in this article, we will discuss the benefits of using both Argireline and retinol in your skincare routine, as well as some of the potential side effects that might occur and how to avoid them while using these anti-aging ingredients.

What is Argireline?

Explanation of argireline, a peptide used in skincare products for its potential to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by targeting facial muscles to promote a smoother and more youthful complexion.

Argireline, scientifically known as Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, is a peptide compound often referred to as “Botox in a jar” because it aims to mimic the effects of Botulinum toxin and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

Argireline works by inhibiting the neurotransmitters that trigger muscle contractions.

This action relaxes facial muscles, reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles from repetitive facial expressions.

Unlike Botox, which directly halts muscle contractions through injections, Argireline provides a non-invasive solution that can be applied topically through creams and serums.

While the primary benefit of Argireline is its potential to reduce the appearance of expression wrinkles, regular use can lead to smoother skin texture, improved skin elasticity, and refined pores.

What is Retinol?

Explanation of retinol, a potent skincare ingredient known for its anti-aging and skin-renewing properties, shedding light on its uses and benefits in skincare routines.

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that increases cellular turnover and boosts collagen production to improve skin texture and reduce the signs of aging.

It’s also a potent antioxidant that reverses skin damage caused by environmental factors such as UV rays and free radicals from polluted air and prevents future damage, which helps maintain the skin’s health and appearance.

Once applied to the skin, retinol binds to retinoid receptors located throughout the epidermal layers.

This binding stimulates various changes that have to do with the growth and differentiation of cells involved with pigmentation, collagen synthesis, and other skin functions.

Once retinol starts to “teach” these cells to behave differently, this will lead to visible skin changes, including smoother, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin.

Additionally, retinol also has a profound effect on acne-prone skin, as it helps unclog blocked pores and clear out the cellular debris responsible for inflammation and acne.

Can You Mix Argireline and Retinol?

Yes, Argireline and retinol can be used together to target different aspects of skin aging and complement each other’s actions for better results.

For example, while Argireline relaxes facial muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, retinol promotes cellular turnover and boosts collagen production to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of more prominent wrinkles.

On the other hand, while research on the direct interaction between Argireline and retinol is limited, some studies suggest that both ingredients can coexist in a skincare regimen without compromising their integrity or effectiveness.

Therefore, as long as your skin tolerates both ingredients, you can mix Argireline with retinol to address multiple skin aging concerns simultaneously and boost your skin’s health and appearance.

The Benefits of Mixing Argireline and Retinol

The benefits of mixing Argireline and retinol are, surprisingly, quite a few, and include the following skin improvements:

Enhanced Anti-Aging Effects: Combining Argireline and retinol offers a dual approach to reducing the signs of aging, targeting dynamic wrinkles, and improving collagen production for a more youthful appearance.

Improved Skin Elasticity: Retinol’s ability to stimulate collagen production complements the muscle-relaxing effects of Argireline, leading to enhanced skin elasticity and firmness.

Refined Skin Texture: The combination of Argireline and retinol can help refine skin texture by promoting cellular turnover, smoothing out rough areas, and refining the appearance of enlarged pores.

Increased Skin Hydration: Argireline can also help maintain skin hydration levels, which when combined with the regenerative properties of retinol, results in plumper, more hydrated skin.

Antioxidant Protection: Retinol acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting the skin from environmental damage, which can be compounded by the regular use of Argireline, contributing to overall skin health.

Reduced Acne: Using Argireline and retinol together can help address both wrinkles and acne concerns, as retinol helps unclog pores and reduce inflammation associated with breakouts, while Argireline can help with hydration and strengthening the skin’s barrier.

The Side Effects of Mixing Argireline and Retinol

While Argireline is generally a well-tolerated ingredient, combining it with retinol can lead to some side effects, including:

  • Peeling and Flaking: Due to the accelerated cellular turnover caused by retinol, some users may experience peeling or flakiness.
  • Dryness: Similarly, the increased cellular turnover can lead to initial dryness until the younger cells on the skin’s surface increase their moisture-holding capacity.
  • Sensitivity and Irritation: Retinol can increase sensitivity and irritation, especially when used in high concentrations or combined with other active ingredients like Argireline.
  • Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some users might experience allergic reactions to either ingredient, characterized by itchiness, swelling, or severe skin irritation.
  • Purging: The skin may require time to adjust to the combination of Argireline and retinol, during which minor breakouts or changes in skin texture, known as purging, can occur.

How to Safely Mix Argireline and Retinol?

Providing insights on correctly combining argireline and retinol in skincare routines to achieve optimal results in minimizing signs of aging, improving skin texture, and enhancing skin health.

To safely incorporate both Argireline and Retinol into your skincare routine, consider the following tips:

Start Slow

When introducing both Argireline and retinol into your skincare routine, it’s crucial to start slow and with the ingredient that’s less likely to cause irritation.

For example, if your skin is more sensitive, start with a lower concentration of Argireline and gradually introduce retinol up to 2-3 times a week to avoid overwhelming your skin.

Once your skin starts tolerating both actives better, you can consider increasing the frequency or concentration of either ingredient.

Use at Night

Applying Argireline and retinol at night allows them to work their magic while the skin is in its repair and regeneration mode, which maximizes their effectiveness.

Additionally, this practice also reduces the risk of sun sensitivity and product degradation, as retinol can make the skin more prone to sun damage and can also be destabilized by exposure to sunlight, which will make it less effective.

Apply From Thin to Thick

When layering Argireline and retinol, always apply the thinnest consistency first and then build up to thicker formulas.

This approach ensures that each product penetrates the skin effectively without creating a barrier for other products.

Follow Up With a Nourishing Moisturizer

After applying retinol and Argireline, it’s important to lock in moisture to prevent dryness and peeling.

Opt for a rich, nourishing moisturizer that suits your skin type to help soothe and hydrate the skin, enhancing the benefits of both active ingredients.

Look for moisturizers containing ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and emollients to help replenish the skin’s moisture barrier and soothe any potential irritation.

Apply Sunscreen in the Morning

Sun protection is imperative when using retinol since this component can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

Each morning, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect against UV damage and prevent collagen breakdown, ensuring the longevity of retinol and Argireline’s anti-aging effects.

Listen to Your Skin

Lastly, it’s important to listen to your skin and make adjustments as needed.

If you experience any discomfort or adverse reactions, reduce the frequency of use or discontinue one or both products until your skin calms down.

Once your skin has recovered, you can gradually reintroduce the products one at a time into your routine.

Always start with the least likely to irritate your skin, which, in this case, would be Argireline, and slowly build up to using both ingredients together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Everyone Use Argireline and Retinol Together?

Most people can safely use both Argireline and retinol together, but those with very sensitive skin should proceed with caution when it comes to mixing active ingredients.

How Quickly Can I Expect to See Results?

Results from Argireline and retinol may vary; however, depending on your skin type, skin concern, and skincare routine, you should expect to see improvements in your skin’s appearance within 6-8 weeks of regular use.

What Comes First: Retinol or Argireline?

When layering skincare products, it’s generally recommended to apply the thinnest consistency first and then build up to thicker formulas.

Therefore, if you are using Argireline in the form of a lightweight, watery serum, you should apply it before retinol.
