How To Make a Heated Herbal Neck Wrap

0

This happy little heat therapy pack nestles into all the tense nooks and crannies around your neck, soothing away tension and softening the painful spots that pop up as we age.

I don’t know when it happened, but at some point my body decided that all it wants is to be warm and comfortable. I work from home most days, so when I’m feeling cranky and just over it, I’ll change into comfy clothes around 4 PM, put on my slippers and grab this warming herbal neck wrap.

A quick spin in the microwave is all it takes to warm the flaxseed inside and activate the lavender blossoms for a little aromatherapy. Then I’ll drape it over my neck and melt into the sofa like it’s a waterbed.

While it does require a sewing machine (you don’t want glue melting in the microwave), as long as you can sew in a straight line it’ll be a piece of cake.

Herbal Neck Wrap Supplies

Making your own warming neck wrap is simple and surprisingly quick. You can finish it in about an hour, and the result feels just as cozy and effective as anything you’d buy in a store.

If you have the time and supplies, you can always make a second one that you can keep in the freezer for some cold therapy. Or scale it down and make one the perfect size for a weighted eye mask.

Since it goes in the microwave, just make sure you’re not using anything that could potentially melt or catch on fire.

  • 100% Cotton Fabric – You can use any organic cotton you like, but I prefer to use cotton flannel baby blankets. They’re soft and comfortable. They’re also organic and free of any weird chemicals or coatings that might get gross when heated. Organic linen or hemp would also work here as well.
  • 100% Cotton Thread – Avoid any metallic thread, which might spark in the microwave, or synthetic thread, which may melt if overheated.
  • Twill Tape – While not totally necessary, I think having handles on my neck wrap is a cheap upgrade. Pulling on them increases the pressure and heat on your tired muscles. They can also be tied, helping to keep the wrap in place. But if you find the added steps overwhelming, you can leave them off without affecting the wrap.

Fill it will flaxseed (or rice, in a pinch) and some dried flower blossoms for scent. Lavender is a great choice, but you can also go with chamomile, rose or jasmine depending on your preferences.

  • Organic Flax Seed – I’ve seen both white rice and flaxseed used in warming wraps, but I recommend sticking with flax. The oils in the flaxseed heat up slowly and retain heat longer than rice, so your wrap won’t need to be reheated as often. It’s also less likely to retain moisture and get moldy, which is an added bonus.
  • Organic Dried Lavender Blossoms – I’m partial to lavender because I find it especially relaxing, but you can use any dried flowers you like. Chamomile, rose, jasmine, gardenia or lilac could all work. You could also use soothing herbs, like peppermint, rosemary, or thyme, if that’s more your speed.

See the recipe card below for quantities.

Instructions

With the right sides together, fold the fabric in half lengthwise (hot dog style) so that the long edges line up.

Using a ½” seam allowance, sew the long seam. Then turn right side out and press.

On one of the short ends, fold the raw edge of the fabric in by ½ inch and press.

Insert the ends of your twill tape and pin in place.

Sew the end closed with the twill tape in place using a top stitch. Remove the pins.

Starting at the closed end, measure 1.5″ down from the top edge. Draw a horizontal line.

Come down to the line you just drew. Measure 1.5″ in from the left edge and draw a line lengthwise down the neck wrap, ending 2″ from the bottom (this includes your ½” inseam).

Move another 1.5″ to the right and draw a second line lengthwise down the wrap.

You should end up with 2 equidistant vertical lines starting 1.5 inches from the top edge, and 1.5 inches in from each side. The lines should stop 2 inches from the bottom edge.

Sew along each vertical line.

Your lines should look like this. This gives the wrap structure that helps keep the flaxseed in place and prevents it from settling on either end of the wrap.

Mix the lavender and flaxseed together in a small bowl. Pour ½ cup into the open end then shake to get it to the bottom.

Keep going until the wrap is almost, but not quite, full. There needs to be some flexibility so it can wrap around your neck.

Fold the raw ends of the open side under and press and insert the ends of your twill tape on the outer edges

Top stitch the end closed. And your neck wrap is ready to use!

How To Use Your Neck Wrap

Wrapping a homemade herbal wrap around your neckWrapping a homemade herbal wrap around your neck

Place the wrap in the microwave and heat in 30-second intervals until desired warmth is achieved. Be careful not to microwave for more than 90 seconds, otherwise you risk it drying out and starting on fire.

Test the temperature of your pack (make sure it’s not too hot!) then drape it around your neck and shoulders to relax tight muscles, ease tension, or warm up on a chilly day. You can also place it on your lower back or across your abdomen for gentle comfort.

The heat usually lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. When it cools down, just pop it back in the microwave for another minute to get it back to the desired temperature.

Top Tip: If you use white rice instead of flaxseed, place a small cup of water in the microwave with your wrap when you heat it. Rice has less oil the flaxseed and tends to dry out more in the microwave, which may cause a fire if you’re not careful.

FAQ

What fabric works best for a DIY neck wrap?

Any organic, natural fiber fabric will work. Cotton or flannel are great choices because they’re soft, breathable, and safe to heat in the microwave. Always avoid synthetic fabrics, which can melt, off gas chemicals or give off odors.

Can I use essential oils instead of dried flowers?

Yes, absolutely. Mixing a few drops of essential oil with the flaxseed will give you the same aromatherapy benefits as dried flowers.

Can I use it as this heated neck wrap as a cold pack too?

Sure, just place it in a sealed bag and store pop it in the freezer for a few hours. It’s great for headaches, sore muscles or tired eyes.

How long does a DIY neck wrap last?

With regular use, it can last several years. If it starts to smell off or the fabric wears thin, it’s time to make a new one.

Notes

I simply poured the mixture into the wrap as best I could, trying to get the seed evenly spread between each of the three columns. But you might find that a wide neck funnel makes it easier to fill.

Can you use Niacinamide with Retinol?

0

Creating an effective skincare routine is an essential part of maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin. Whether you have an established skin care routine or you are searching for the right products for your skin, it’s important to know that there are certain skincare ingredients that work together to benefit your skin, while some can irritate your skin. For example, if you are unknowingly combining skincare products with different pH levels, they can actually be counterproductive and irritate your skin’s barrier. If lately you’ve found yourself looking at your skin care products and asking “can I use niacinamide with retinol?” we’re here to help. Our Kate Somerville Skin Health Experts reveal everything there is to know about these ingredients and how you can create a skincare routine using both that’s effective, safe, and delivers visible results fast.

Benefits of Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3. There are several benefits of niacinamide, such as being a powerful antioxidant, which help combat signs of aging. It works to improve your skin’s natural barrier by boosting ceramide production and carefully increasing cell turnover.1 This process helps diminish visible premature aging signs like wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation. Topical niacinamide also calms the skin, making it the ideal skincare ingredient to use alongside powerful exfoliators like retinol.

Benefits of Retinol

Like niacinamide, retinol is a vitamin. In this case, a form of vitamin A. As one of the most potent over-the-counter exfoliators, it works to reduce dullness, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and smooth the appearance of wrinkles.2 When used regularly, retinol’s ability to and increase cell turnover helps improve skin texture while also brightening the skin.

Though retinol has many anti-aging benefits, it can be harmful if used incorrectly. You don’t want to use retinol too frequently (every other night or every three nights is optimal). If used too frequently or at the wrong strength, retinol may cause dryness, redness, and irritation, which could contribute to an uneven skin tone. Because of this, retinol products should be worked into your skincare routine slowly and used alongside hydrating products like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides. Additionally, it’s essential to apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher the morning after you use retinol before bed. Using an exfoliant like retinol can cause sensitivity, especially when under direct sunlight.

Can You Niacinamide and Retinol Together?

Now that you know the many benefits of niacinamide and retinol, it’s time to answer the question “Can you use niacinamide with retinol?” Using these two products together offers several advantages and can take your current skincare routine to the next level. Niacinamide has anti-aging and soothing properties that make it the ideal ingredient to pair with retinol. Because retinol runs the chance of initially causing irritation, niacinamide can be used to stabilize your skin’s barrier and reduce the amount of water lost, increasing your overall hydration levels.

How to Use Niacinamide and Retinol Together

The simplest way to use both ingredients is to choose a product that mixes the two. Treatments like Kateceuticals™ Resurfacing Overnight Peel are expertly formulated with active ingredients including retinol, niacinamide, and glycolic acid to address the comprehensive signs of aging. After just one use, you’ll notice an improvement in luminosity and skin texture.

If you don’t have a product that contains both ingredients, don’t worry. First, use niacinamide and then layer retinol to protect your skin from any irritation. The optimal pH level for retinol activation is between 5.5 and 6 and topical niacinamide is most effective at a pH of 5-7. Neither ingredient will alter the pH of the other and instead work to increase the effectiveness of each.

Application Process

Ready to begin using these two super ingredients together? Follow the steps below to create a retinol-based skincare routine that will leave your skin glowing and strong.

#1 Prep Your Skin

Before using retinol, we recommend prepping your skin by cleansing it. Then apply any products you enjoy with niacinamide. Follow with your retinol product, which may include a hydrating treatment like our DermalQuench Liquid Lift™ + Retinol. Our clinic-inspired Oxygen booster treatment instantly hydrates and plumps skin to smooth out lines and wrinkles while retinol and HPR (a Retinoic Acid Ester) deliver firming, smoothing, and brightening benefits with minimized irritation. Or, if serums are your guilty pleasure, nothing’s as powerful or works as quickly as our Retinol Vita C Serum expertly formulated with pure retinol and ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C) to firm, smooth & brighten skin overnight.

And finally, if you love the luxe, lightweight feel of the Kate Somerville +Retinol Vitamin C Moisturizer, you can effectively brighten and nourish your skin while improving the texture and tone and minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Remember to apply niacinamide before retinol-based products to help shield your skin and reduce unwanted irritation. The use of both ceramides and niacinamide when prepping your skin for retinol has proven to be highly effective for retinoid use.

#2 Incorporate Retinol into Your Routine Slowly

While we touched on this earlier, it’s essential to take a slow and steady approach when adding retinol to your skincare routine. Though niacinamide can act as a natural buffer, retinol-based products should only be used in the PM. Designed to improve signs of premature aging, it works quickly and over time to improve elasticity, bounce, smoothness, and skin brightening.

#3 Protect Your Skin

Retinol boasts some pretty amazing benefits. However, it can make your skin more sensitive to outside irritants and environmental factors. When using retinol in your skincare routine, be sure to protect your skin barrier by using a great moisturizer and regularly applying sunscreen.

It’s important to remember that your skincare routine should be based on your skin’s individual needs. Have fun experimenting, and see what works best for your skin.

Now that you know you can use niacinamide with retinol, our Skin Health Experts are here to share more useful information about combining products, such as niacinamide with vitamin C, and answer any questions you may have about your skin type.

The Scary Truth Behind Counterfeit Skincare Products – skinfo

0

The pandemic is ever-changing life as we know it. E-commerce is now booming in a post quarantine world. Markets such as Amazon and eBay are seeing an uptick between 20-30% in sales of at home skincare and beauty products as consumers are choosing to socially distance. These lower prices and convenience of delivery are coming at a cost to consumers. Counterfeiters are seizing this opportunity within the pandemic using the internet to saturate markets with fake goods. Brand protection agency, Incopro, claimed in 2019 that 52% of Americans have previously lost trust in brands after unintentionally purchasing counterfeit products. Such products contribute to many harmful factors for consumers and society as a whole. The production, transport, and sales of counterfeit beauty and anti-aging products lead to numerous issues such as poor working conditions, violations of international trade policies, distrust in big-name brands, and severe contact dermatitis when applied to the consumer’s skin.

Internet retailers are consistently criticized for having an astronomical amount of counterfeit skincare products. Marketplaces, such as Amazon, allow for individual sellers to retail products. Even though Amazon has cracked down on their marketplace over the past few years thousands still transact and ship through this web service, unfortunately leaving research to the consumer in regards to if their products are the real deal or not.

Over the last decade or so, skincare brands have been working tirelessly to counteract the sales of counterfeit products in hopes that they can maintain
their brand’s reputation. Information disclosing what counterfeits may look like are often posted on a manufacturer’s website. The best way this has been reinforced is by only allowing authorized retailers to sell their products. At skinfo®, we are fighting harder than ever to stop the sale of products we endorse through unauthorized outlets. Our products sold in-store are strictly sold through dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and medically supervised spas. When a consumer purchases these products online from a source that varies from the label’s list of authorized retailers there is no guarantee that they won’t be counterfeit, diluted, or expired, which in turn, can have hazardous effects on the skin.

Other than purchasing from an authorized retailer, there are a few other ways to spot if a product is the real thing or not. One of the biggest giveaways of a counterfeit skincare product is the packaging and label. Spelling errors, unusual colors, differing fonts, and uneven sticker placement are all signs you have a counterfeit skincare product. Be wary if the item is priced far below the usual retail price. There’s a solid chance it’s not the real deal in this scenario. Also note the product texture, color, viscosity, smell, and feel itself when sampling. If you have the chance to feel the real product in person at an authorized retailer, you’ll usually notice that the texture is not the same in counterfeit products.

If there is any inkling in your mind a product you have acquired is counterfeit, play it safe by doing a patch test. Typically, authorized retailers are required to send back pharmaceutical products for testing when returned due to allergic reactions. When testing products that have been suspected of being counterfeit, traces of substances like lead, arsenic, copper, mercury, beryllium, cadmium, aluminum, cyanide, bacteria, animal feces, and urine have been found. These additives are harmful to the human body as a whole due to their carcinogenic features.

When purchasing cosmeceuticals, it is imperative to take the recommendations of your doctor to heart to avoid counterfeit items. Dr. Taub hand selects all products within our practice after vigorous research and testing to offer you the best products for whatever your skin’s needs are. All of our products are sourced directly from the manufacturer so you can rest assured you not only have the best product for the concern you are looking to address but also that you have a real, untainted product that will improve whatever condition you are trying to address, not exacerbate it.

Luxury is changing era: customer flight and massive shift towards experience

0

The global luxury market is stabilizing with 1.44 trillion in revenue expected in 2025 but continues to lose customers, while those who remain change their habits, according to a study by consulting firm Bain and Company.

“We are finishing the year much better than we had anticipated,” said AFP Joëlle de Montgolfier, director of the luxury division of Bain and Company. In the spring, the authors of the study, carried out in partnership with the Altagamma Foundation which brings together the big names in Italian luxury, had in fact envisaged a decline of 2% to 5% in sales for the year 2025.

Consumers deterred by high prices

After a difficult start to the year, sales to UNITED STATESone of the main luxury markets, which had suffered from the start of Donald Trump’s mandate and the announcements of customs duties, have recovered “since May”, according to Joëlle de Montgolfier, while the Chinese market also seems to be stabilizing.

But after a peak of 400 million consumers in 2022, the luxury sector loses customers every year“at the rate of 10 to 20 million customers again this year” to reach 340 million, she warns. One of the reasons for this disaffection is the continued rise in prices “even though we warned last year that prices were quite high”, underlines the sector specialist.

Today, even glasses or beauty products, which “were the entry-level luxury ten years ago”, have seen their prices increase. “Spending is decreasing in frequency, consumers are turning to more modest pleasures and promotions,” warn the authors of the study.

Experiences rather than products

People who still want to have a touch of luxury in their lives are now turning to restaurants or well-being like spas“where ultimately for 200, 300 euros you will have a luxury experience whereas you will not be able to buy a pot of cream for that price”, underlines Ms. de Montgolfier.

But this trend of “experience” rather than products does not only concern so-called “aspirational” customers, that is to say, those who wish to enter the world of luxury. According to the study, this is a “persistent global trend” which also affects the wealthiest, who represent 2% of customers but 45% of spending.

“People are less into possessions than into a form of hedonism and enjoyment and therefore there is a reallocation of expenses from everything that involves purchasing products to everything that is linked to travel or the art of living,” according to Joëlle de Montgolfier.

The study calls this shift “a tectonic shift toward luxury experiences — hotel cruises, high-end dining — away from traditional goods, including luxury automobiles.”

Thus, the global market for luxury personal goods (fashion, leather goods, jewelry, watches and beauty) should remain generally stable this year. compared to the previous year, with an estimated value of 358 billion euros in 2025 (-2%). Sales of luxury cars are expected to decline by 6%, those of wines and spirits by 5%, those of works of art by 9% while sales of gastronomy are expected to increase by 5% and those of cruises by 10%.

Bain and Company estimates that over the next ten years, annual growth in the luxury personal goods market is expected to increase between 4% and 6% to reach between 525 billion euros and 625 billion euros, while overall luxury spending could reach 2,200 to 2,700 billion euros.

Why sunscreen is important year-round

0

When the sun shines brightly in Western Canada, many people flock outdoors to bask in its warmth. However, what often goes overlooked is the crucial role sunscreen plays in protecting our skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunscreen is not just a summer accessory; it is an important part of a daily skincare routine, regardless of the season. Understanding its benefits can help you embrace a healthier lifestyle while enjoying your time outdoors.

Sunscreen is essential for protecting the skin from damage caused by UV radiation. Its primary benefit is shielding the skin from UVA and UVB rays – the two main types of ultraviolet radiation.  UVA rays contribute to premature skin aging and tanning while UVB rays are responsible for sunburn. Both can increase the risk of skin cancer.

The Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to ensure protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Before going outdoors apply on all exposed skin including the lips and reapply every 2 hours or more frequently if sweating heavily or swimming. For a list of CDA recognized products visit Sunscreen – Canadian Dermatology Association.

Regular use of sunscreen doesn’t just prevent burns – it can also prevent signs of premature aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Dermatological studies show that a daily application of sunscreen can slow down the skin’s aging process, helping maintain a more youthful appearance.

Even with the best intentions, sometimes a sunburn happens. Sunburns occur when the skin is overexposed to UV radiation, leading to inflammation, redness and irritation. If you find yourself suffering from a sunburn, take immediate steps to alleviate discomfort and promote healing.

What to Do If You Get Sunburned

  1. Cool the Skin

Apply a cool compress or take a cool bath to lower skin temperature and reduce swelling. Avoid hot showers, as they can intensify the burning sensation and irritation.

  1. Moisturize

Once skin is cooled, apply a fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe vera gel to soothe the affected areas. Ingredients like chamomile or calendula can also offer calming effects.

  1. Stay Hydrated

Sunburn draws moisture to the skin’s surface, increasing your risk of dehydration. Drink plenty of water to rehydrate your body.  You can also try mineral water sprays from brands like Avene or La Roche-Posay help to hydrate your skin and cool the skin externally for immediate relief.

  1. Avoid Further Sun Exposure

Protect sunburned skin by keeping it covered and staying out of direct sunlight until it is fully healed. Continued exposure can worsen damage and delay recovery.

  1. Consider a Pain Reliever if Needed

If sunburn pain is not tolerable or interferes with sleep, non-prescription pain relievers such as ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation. Always consult your pharmacist or doctor to ensure that the product is safe for you to take and does not conflict with your other medications or medical conditions.

  1. When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention If a sunburn is severe – especially if symptoms do not improve after a few days or seem to be getting worse. Warning signs include blistering over a large area, swelling, or signs of infection such as pus, oozing blisters, or increased redness and warmth.  Get immediate help if there are signs of a heat-related illness, including severe headache, confusion, dizziness, nausea, or fever.  Be extra cautious with babies, young children, and older adults as they are more vulnerable to sunburn and its complications.

Choosing the right sunscreen can feel overwhelming, with so many brands, SPF levels, and other features to consider. If you are unsure which sunscreen is best for your skin type or needs, ask your London Drugs pharmacist or beauty advisor for advice. We’re happy to help you find the best products to keep your skin protected and healthy – this summer and all year long too.

What I Eat Actually In A Day To Control Hair Fall And Boost Hair Growth

Hey there! Some links on this page are affiliate links which means that, if you choose to make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I greatly appreciate your support 🙂

Sharing my hair fall control diet thatLet me be real: I started losing so much hair, I could have knit a sweater out of it. My bathroom drain looked like it was plotting against me, and don’t even get me started on the sheer terror of brushing my hair.

Hair fall is the universal heartbreak nobody asked for. And while serums, oils, and salon treatments fight for space on your vanity, the truth is simple, healthy hair starts with your plate. And when I say diet, I don’t mean sad salads and starvation. I mean nourishing hair from within, like a loving, slightly obsessive best friend.

So if you’re dealing with hair fall and wondering if your plate has anything to do with it, spoiler: it does!

Here’s what I actually eat in a day to support stronger, fuller hair, plus the science behind every bite. This, in my opinion, is the chicest way to eat your way to shinier and far more loyal strands.

Why Right Diet Matters For Hair Fall?

Hair is made of keratin, a protein that thrives on amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Without enough protein, iron, zinc, and biotin, your follicles basically go on strike, resulting in breakage, thinning, and that dreaded extra strand count on your pillow. A poor diet may not cause hair loss overnight, but it slowly weakens roots and reduces the growth cycle of hair. Instead of obsessing over expensive products alone, it’s important to fuel your hair from within.

Morning Rituals (7–8 AM)

I start with the least glamorous but most effective trick: soaked fenugreek seeds. A glass of warm water with soaked methi seeds, plus three soaked almonds and one walnut.

Why?

Fenugreek is rich in protein, nicotinic acid, and iron, nutrients that strengthen roots and reduce shedding. It also helps fight dandruff and scalp inflammation. Almonds and walnuts bring in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and biotin, which support new growth.

Breakfast (8:30–9:30 AM)

Depending on my mood, I go for avocado toast with whole grain bread and a boiled egg, or Greek yogurt parfait with berries, flaxseeds, and honey, or oatmeal with chia seeds and almond butter. Eggs provide protein and biotin, avocados bring vitamin E and healthy fats that improve scalp circulation, and chia seeds offer omega-3s that keep follicles strong.

If you don’t like chia, flaxseeds or sunflower seeds work just as well.

On desi mornings, it’s moong dal chilla with mint chutney, vegetable upma loaded with carrots and curry leaves, or simply two boiled eggseach of these is rich in protein, iron, and B-vitamins, the exact nutrients your hair follicles need to stay strong and reduce breakage.

And no matter what, I never skip my cup of tea, it’s the only way I can function.

Mid-morning Snack (11 AM)

This used to be the step I ignored, but it makes such a difference.

On days when I feel hungry or need extra energy, I snack on papaya or guava slices, or a citrus fruit like orange or kiwi. I pair this with a handful of mixed nuts and coconut water.

Vitamin C from fruit boosts iron absorption, nuts add zinc and omega-3s, and coconut water hydrates the scalp. For an extra boost, I sometimes toss pumpkin seeds into a smoothie or just snack on them while going through my to-do list for the day.

Lunch (1–2 PM)

My lunches rotate between Indian and global bowls. Dal with multigrain rotis and palak sabzi, rajma or chole with brown rice, curd with flaxseeds and a cucumber-beetroot salad, or grilled tofu with quinoa and roasted veggies.

Buttermilk is non-negotiable for meit promotes gut health, which is linked to hair health.

The science: protein from tofu, paneer, or fish helps repair hair shafts. Beetroot improves blood flow to the scalp. Yogurt with flaxseeds supports hormonal balance, a hidden factor behind hair fall. And sesame seeds (which I sprinkle into sabzis or chutneys) are calcium bombs that follicles love.

Evening Snack (4:30–5 PM)

I keep this light but nourishing.

Sometimes it’s a green smoothie with spinach, banana, and flaxseeds, other times roasted chickpeas or sprout chaat with lemon. If I’m feeling lazy, it’s simply coconut water or green tea.

Roasted chickpeas give plant protein and zinc, walnuts and almonds add omega-3s, and herbal teas like nettle or green tea are full of antioxidants that protect follicles. Skipping this snack often makes me reach for chips later, which my hair does not approve of.

Dinner (7:30–8 PM)

My dinners are light but balanced.

Spinach with brown rice, or grilled paneer with sauted veggies. Occasionally I’ll have a bowl of sweetcorn soup with quinoa or dal khichdi if I want something comforting.

Low iron is one of the most overlooked causes of hair fall, especially in women. So I make sure spinach, beetroot, and legumes feature heavily in my dinners.

Bedtime Ritual (9:30–10 PM)

Golden milk, also known as haldiwala doodh or turmeric latte, is my nightcap.

Made with almond or cow’s milk, a pinch of turmeric, black pepper, and sometimes ashwagandha powder or a tiny piece of jaggery, this drink reduces inflammation, regulates stress hormones, and helps me sleep. And since stress is the sneakiest cause of hair fall, this ritual is as important as conditioner.

Hair-boosting Super Foods I Add Weekly

  • Spinach, kale, or leafy veegies for iron and vitamin A.
  • Berries or amla for vitamin C.
  • Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and flaxseeds for omega-3s and zinc.
  • Eggs or paneer or tofu for protein and biotin.
  • Lentils for folate and iron.
  • Quinoa, avocado, Greek yogurt, curry leaves, moringa, sesame seeds, and turmeric also make regular appearances. I am allergic to seafood but you should definitely make it an integral part of your hair fall control diet.

Non-negotiables For Healthy Hair

It’s not just about what you eat, it’s also how you live.

  • Hydration is key, so I aim for 8–10 glasses of water daily. Dehydration leads to dry scalp and breakage.
  • Gut health matters too, so I include probiotic-rich foods like curd, kefir, or sauerkraut.
  • I avoid crash diets, because losing weight too fast often leads to hair shedding.
  • Sunshine is important, I try to get at least 15 minutes daily for vitamin D.
  • And of course, 7–8 hours of sleep, because your body heals and repairs itself at night, and that includes your hair follicles.
  • I also try to avoid too much caffeine, since it blocks iron absorption, and limit fried foods, refined sugar, and processed snacks because they cause inflammation and poor nutrient absorption.

My Hair Fall Control Diet Takeaway

Think of this as a hair-healthy passport. Whether your plate has quinoa or khichdi, avocado or amla, the key is balance: protein at every meal, iron plus vitamin C combos for absorption, omega-3s and zinc from nuts and seeds, hydration, and stress control.

Follow this for 30–45 days and watch your strands get shinier, thicker, and far less dramatic about falling out. I’m not saying you need to overhaul your entire kitchen or live off chia pudding to save your hair. But your follicles are hungry little things, and if you feed them right with protein, iron, healthy fats, and vitamins; they’ll reward you with stronger, shinier strands.

You don’t have to follow this exact plan, I don’t eat like this every single day either. But even small changes, like adding an egg here, some nuts there, and cutting back on junk, can make a visible difference. My hair noticed. It finally stopped plotting its escape every time I took a shower.

Make a Holiday Season Savings Plan a Habit – The Wardrobe Stylist

0

According to an annual national survey conducted for the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada), most Canadians have spending goals in mind, but many haven’t thought about how they will stay on budget.

Source

Make Your Savings Plan a Habit

In 2020, Canadians planned to spend an average of $583 on gifts in the holiday season. This was down from $643 in 2019. More than 40% did not set a budget for holiday spending, so sticking to those spending goals could be a challenge. This could also explain why one-in-five respondents anticipate overspending this year and nearly half say they experience added stress during the holidays. This stress may expand this year given the current economic climate that’s forcing many to tighten their belts, despite the return to normal.

With more than half of Canadians living paycheque to paycheque, even small financial miscalculations can have significant consequences. It’s never too late to start planning and monitoring your spending – it can go a long way to providing some peace of mind.

Mail Handwritten Notes

Instead of purchasing and sending holiday cards, send personalized handwritten notes, without you doing any of the work. That’s what Handwrytten allows you to do. It makes handwritten notes easy to send as an email or via mail. Their patented robot is capable of autonomously writing nearly 500 notes a day. It uses custom-designed handwriting robots that hold real pens to write out the notes in the handwriting style of your choice on quality paper.

Pricing starts at $3.25, and postage is billed at cost, with bulk discounts available. They also offer subscriptions if you are looking to send more notes each month for various occasions, such as automatically send birthday cards. You can even add gift cards to handwritten note. They offer cards from  major brands.

Changes to Holiday Travel and Entertainment

In 2020, 62% of those surveyed planned to stay home and spend less than $200 on travel expenses. Much of it was due to travel restrictions. Of course, as things have been easing, this trend has been on the decline. Though with current inflation, it’ll be interesting to see how this will pan out.

Again, 2020 was not heavy on parties as 61% had planned to spend less than $200 on parties and other holiday entertainment. My feeling is we will celebrate after a couple of years of confinement with small scale parties to contain the cost.

In-person vs. Online Shopping

Despite the e-commerce boom, Canadians still rely on in-store shopping. That is something I don’t think will ever get replaced. In 2020, 45% expected to spend more in-store, while 18% planned to do most of their shopping online. Nearly a third of those surveyed considered splitting their spending between in-store and online.

Avoid Holiday Stress

Holiday stress is real. Almost half of Canadians say they have added stress during the holiday season. Here’s list of 5 quick and easy tips for a stress-free holiday. Stick to these simple rules and you’ll be feeling merry, even after the decorations have been put away!

Start Saving Early

No one wants to worry about their finances over the holidays. Avoid financial stress this season by starting NOW and prioritizing a savings plan throughout the year for next season. Only 39% of Canadians save all year for their holiday purchases. Planning for these expensive periods in advance will set you up for financial success all year long.

Create a Budget

Most Canadians admitted to not having a holiday budget. Whether they have a holiday season budget or not, many say they do not plan to overspend this season. Creating a budget doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds. Set spending targets for gifts, travel and entertaining. Write them down and keep track of your spending in your savings plan as you shop.

Tackle Debt All Year Long

The best way to stay on budget and stress-free over the holidays is by paying down debt and sticking to an annual budget. Getting into the habit of tracking spending and paying down debt will ensure everyone can relax and enjoy the festive season to the fullest.

While 29% of those surveyed planned to spend less in 2020 due to the pandemic, when it comes to gifting, Canadians still intend to spend an average of $588 this holiday season. This is slightly higher than the $583 reported in the CPA Canada 2019 Holiday Spending Study. I suspect this trend will carry on with current prices.

Find Those Deals

Savvy shoppers know that finding a good deal is all about research and timing. Take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Shop end of season items now so you don’t have to splurge later. Get on coupon apps like Honey to get the savings directly applied to your online purchase.

Think Outside The Gift Box

Almost half of Canadians plan to give a non-traditional gift. Whether it’s festive food or a caring and thoughtful gesture, thinking outside the box when it comes to gift ideas is a great way to save money. Express your creativity during an expensive time of year. We’re a country of do-it-your-selfers, re-gifters and donors who looks beyond traditional presents. Rather than return unwanted gifts, keep them to re-gift, someone else might enjoy them more than you:

  • homemade (26%)
  • second-hand gifts (13%)
  • charitable donations (18%)
  • promise to do something for someone (13%)

Many Canadians were committed to helping others over the holidays, with roughly 72% planning on making charitable donations. This year many will feel the pinch though I’m hopeful many will keep giving. You can even turn that into a gift!

The Gift of it

Making your savings plan a habit is key to surviving a financially rough year. Tracking your spending and setting money aside regularly will help ease off the burden. Shopping end of season and major sale events can make difference. Better yet, get creative and donate, DIY, re-gift or shop second-hand. Remember, small savings add up. What are your savings plan ideas?

7 Incredible Antioxidant Serums | 100% PURE

0

Why are antioxidants so good for skin? They inhibit damage, support skin repair and, in some cases, encourage enhanced skin function. This means that antioxidants help to support anti-aging efforts and promote more balanced, happier skin overall.

As we move into the cooler months, our main skin care goal is to offset stress wrought by changing weather conditions. We’re identifying the best serums to keep skin shining bright all the way into the new year. Here’s our list of the top 7 antioxidant serums for the winter season and beyond!

#1: Multi-Vitamin + Antioxidant PM Serum
You probably saw this one coming, right? A holy grail for normal to oily skin types, this potent antioxidant serum packs a serious punch thanks to active ingredients in the formula:

  • Coenzyme Q10 – CoQ10 is a major antioxidant for anti-aging, helping to boost collagen, reduce fine lines, and lighten hyperpigmentation.
  • Retinol – Retinol also helps to stabilize sebum production, minimize breakouts and deliver smoother, more radiant skin through cellular renewal.
  • Niacinamide – This gentle yet powerful antioxidant works to balance oil, smooth pores, and fight signs of UV damage.

#2: Vitamin C Concentrated Boost
Want to make quick work of acne marks, excess oil, or lackluster skin? This potent powdered serum is best for combo, oily, and normal skin types. It delivers a maximum dose of ultra-transformative vitamin C, to slough away dead skin on the surface while improving the appearance of damaged or scarred skin.

#3: Niacinamide Concentrated Boost
For all skin types – but especially beneficial for us oily girls – niacinamide is another antioxidant that maintains skin’s youth by keeping the skin firm and flexible. This dynamo ingredient has it out for dark spots and makes quick work of discoloration. Supporting dramatically improved skin – from large pores and acne scarring all the way to sagging and fine lines – this boost promotes a more stunning complexion with each use.

#4: Green Tea EGCG Concentrate Serum
We love the soothing but potent nature of green tea: one of the main components in this antioxidant serum. Here’s what plants this serum on our top 7 list:

  • Green Tea & EGCG – Together this power-couple fights inflammation, dryness, and puffiness. Fighting sun damage and acne, green tea and EGCG may be one of the most impactful antioxidants for all skin types.
  • Acai – A favorite antioxidant in both our diets and skin regimens, acai helps to restore and nourish the skin. Loaded with nutrients like A, B, C, and E vitamins, acai can boost brightness and support our skin’s collagen production.
  • Hyaluronic Acid – This ultra-hydrating ingredient behaves like an antioxidant, replenishing the skin’s moisture by drawing in 1,000x its weight in hydration.

#5: Vitamin C Serum
Every skin type deserves a little vitamin C, and this sunny serum is the perfect place to start. Great for even sensitive skin types, here’s how a serum like this can transform the skin:

  • Vitamin C – The IT-girl of anti-aging antioxidants, vitamin C gives us all the glow we could ever need. It turns over dead skin cells and reduces discoloration on the surface. Supporting a boost in collagen as well, this namesake ingredient sets the skin up for agelessness.
  • Vitamin E – The key to continually moisturized skin, E vitamin is known to hydrate and repair damaged skin. It fortifies our skin’s protective barrier against the effects of UV damage.
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid – Naturally sourced from yams, beets, and tomatoes, this anti-aging antioxidant makes quick works of fine lines and enlarged pores. It helps to rid our skin of free radicals for a smoother and more radiant complexion.

#6: Mushroom Peptides Firming Serum
This lightweight, fast-absorbing serum is ideal for dry or mature skin types seeking firming and lifting benefits with a botanical twist. Its powerful antioxidant and peptide-rich formula helps to reduce fine lines and support collagen integrity—without synthetic chemicals.

Tremella Mushroom – Also known as the “snow mushroom,” tremella delivers antioxidant protection while binding water to the skin like hyaluronic acid. It plumps and hydrates for a smoother, dewier appearance.

Peptides – Naturally derived from rice and other botanicals, peptides signal the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, resulting in a firmer, more lifted look over time.

Resveratrol – Sourced from grapes, this powerful polyphenol helps reduce oxidative damage and visibly calms redness or inflammation associated with environmental stressors.

This serum is especially beneficial as a daily treatment to firm sagging skin and diminish dullness caused by age-related collagen loss.

#7: Black Tea Grass Jelly Antioxidant Serum
This refreshing gel-serum is ideal for oily, sensitive, or acne-prone skin types. Packed with a cocktail of antioxidant-rich botanicals and calming hydrators, it delivers intense soothing benefits while fighting free radical damage.

Black Tea Extract – Rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, black tea defends against oxidative stress and helps reduce signs of aging such as fine lines and uneven tone.

Grass Jelly (Mesona Chinensis) – A traditional herbal extract known for its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. It calms redness, hydrates deeply, and helps restore the skin’s moisture barrier.

Basil, Sea Buckthorn & Niacinamide – This botanical trio works together to brighten dull skin, reduce blemishes, and even out texture without irritating sensitive skin.

This serum is a top pick for those who want a light, breathable antioxidant treatment that balances oil production and soothes stressed-out skin.

What Makes a Good Antioxidant Serum?

Not all antioxidant serums are created equal. The best ones combine potent antioxidants with delivery systems and complementary ingredients that enhance their performance and stability. For instance, antioxidants like vitamin C can degrade when exposed to air or light, so the packaging and formulation must protect the active compounds to ensure they stay effective on your skin.

Additionally, a well-rounded antioxidant serum should contain hydrating agents, anti-inflammatory botanicals, and skin-repairing nutrients to provide comprehensive care. This synergy helps to not only neutralize free radicals but also improve skin texture, reduce inflammation, and enhance resilience to environmental stress.

When choosing an antioxidant serum, consider your skin’s primary concerns. Is it dullness? Premature aging? Sensitivity or dehydration? Serums that layer antioxidants with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, and barrier-supporting lipids will offer more noticeable, long-lasting results.

Frequently Asked Questions About Antioxidant Serums

1. What do antioxidant serums do for your skin?
Antioxidant serums protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by environmental aggressors like pollution, UV rays, and free radicals. They help prevent premature aging, support collagen production, and brighten the skin by neutralizing the damage that leads to wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity. Many antioxidant serums also contain hydrating and anti-inflammatory ingredients that improve overall skin texture and tone.

2. Which antioxidants are best for anti-aging?
The most effective anti-aging antioxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E, resveratrol, niacinamide, ferulic acid, and CoQ10. These ingredients work by reducing oxidative damage, stimulating collagen, fading hyperpigmentation, and boosting cellular renewal. Using them in combination, or within serums that pair them with hydrating agents like hyaluronic acid or peptides, enhances their efficacy and visible results.

3. Can I use an antioxidant serum with retinol or acids?
Yes, but proceed with caution. Antioxidants can actually support the skin when using stronger actives like retinol or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) by reducing inflammation and improving hydration. However, it’s best to alternate use (e.g., vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night) or choose serums that are specifically formulated to be compatible with other actives to avoid irritation.

4. Should antioxidant serums be used day or night?
Both! In the morning, antioxidant serums—especially those containing vitamin C or green tea—help protect skin from daily environmental stress. In the evening, antioxidant-rich formulas with retinol, peptides, or resveratrol aid in skin repair and recovery. Many antioxidant serums are gentle enough for twice-daily use, but always follow usage directions based on ingredients and skin sensitivity.

5. How long does it take to see results from antioxidant serums?
You may notice hydration and glow within a few days, but visible improvements in fine lines, tone, and texture typically take 4–6 weeks of consistent use. This is because antioxidants work at a cellular level, gradually improving skin health over time. The key is daily use, especially under sunscreen during the day, to protect and strengthen skin’s defenses.

Is This the Best Curation Yet?

I’ve always been a fan of the Best of Dermstore curations, but the new Healthy Skin Edit is on another level. The lineup covers cleansing, treatment, moisture, and protection in a way that actually makes sense. It also spotlights some of the strongest formulas in antioxidants, growth factors, peptides, and microexfoliants.

If I’m being honest, adding an eye cream would make this set flawless, but that’s truly my only gripe. The brand selection is phenomenal. And if you use my affiliate code OMGBART at checkout, you can have The Healthy Skin Edit on its way for $165.75. Considering the total value is $730, the savings are wild. More below.

What’s in The Healthy Skin Edit

SkinMedica AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser

A foaming gel that smooths texture and prevents congestion. The blend of fruit and sugar-derived alpha hydroxy acids plus salicylic acid helps lift away buildup and keeps skin soft and balanced. FYI: You’re likely receiving the previous packaging. (full-size 6 oz/180ml, $48 value)

SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF

My favorite vitamin C serum from SkinCeuticals, and one that warranted its own dedicated post. It’s brilliant if CE Ferulic feels too rich. Combination and breakout-prone skin types will love it. Lightweight texture, serious results. (full-size 30ml, $185 value)

Medik8 Clarity Peptides

Medik8 does peptides exceptionally well (and retinol even better). This peptide-niacinamide-zinc blend aims to firm while refining and clarifying uneven skin. It layers beautifully under sunscreen. (full-size 30ml, $54 value)

iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+

People often ask how this compares to Silymarin CF. The textures are similar but the benefits are slightly different. Alternate them if you pick up this edit. Pro-Heal brightens, soothes inflammation, and tightens the look of the skin. Safe for all skin types including rosacea and acne. (deluxe-size 15ml, $99 value)

Bioeffect EGF Serum

A silky, ultra-concentrated treatment powered by barley-derived growth factors that encourage the skin to shift into repair and firmness mode. It’s one of those formulas that actually lives up to the hype. The bottle looks tiny but you only need three drops per application. (full-size 15ml, $175 value)

Allies of Skin Advanced Firming Daily Treatment

If Allies of Skin overwhelms you (serum fatigue is real), go with this hero. Lightweight and creamy, it suits all skin types. It’s my preferred night treatment in warmer months when I crave fewer retinoids and more nourishment. Intensely hydrating. (full-size 50ml, $125 value)

EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46

I’m quietly thrilled this is the untinted version because that formula remains the superior one. UV Clear SPF 46 is still one of EltaMD’s best sunscreens. The hybrid filters and oil-free texture make it a favorite for anyone who wants an airy feel with a glowy (not greasy) finish. (full-size 50ml, $45 value)

Lastly…

The Healthy Skin Edit arrives in a branded Dermstore zip pouch. I’ve collected many versions over the years and the quality holds up. Some remain my most-used travel bags. Use my affiliate code OMGBART at checkout and the price drops to $165.75 from $175. Considering the SkinCeuticals serum alone retails for $185, this is the ultimate treat-to-self for the holidays.
