7 of the Worst Things You Can Do During Cold And Flu Season

0

Over the past five or so years, COVID has stolen a lot of the spotlight from the flu and the run-of-the-mill cold. But both are still highly prevalent in the US. What’s more, the flu can bring about a host of other health complications—and can even be deadly in some cases.

FWIW, COVID has also helped to bring about some positive changes in terms of how we think about infectious diseases in general. “I think that our experience with COVID launched a [big] change in scientific research and data,” says Steven Lamm, MD, internist and the director of NYU Langone’s Preston Robert Tisch Center for Men’s Health. On the horizon could be more efficient and effective vaccines, AI-enabled tests, he says, and much more.

In the meantime, there are plenty of proven steps you can take to cut your risk of getting seriously sick from a cold or flu. But there are also common missteps people make when trying to treat or prevent these illnesses. Consider these common mistakes infectious disease doctors want you to avoid, and what to do instead.

1. You don’t consider the flu a worthy opponent.

“I think the biggest mistake is that people are underestimating the seriousness of influenza,” Dr. Lamm says. That, in turn, leads to a “cascade effect” of essentially making every other mistake on this list. “The reality is [people] should be scared of influenza,” he says, because it can be a potentially life-threatening illness. Dr. Lamm also points out that it’s not just long COVID—people can get “long influenza” as well. “There’s a small number of people who, for whatever reason, will have a protracted illness following influenza where they will have mental fogginess, excessive fatigue, and muscle aches for weeks,” Dr. Lamm says.

What to do instead: Knowledge is power, Dr. Lamm says. Keep tabs on reputable sources of information, and be aware that the flu can lead to other health complications. “Very few people will appreciate that there’s a much higher incidence of heart attacks and strokes following influenza,” Dr. Lamm says. Indeed, influenza raised the risk for heart attack four-fold after infection; and COVID tripled the risk for both of those events post-infection, per a recent scientific review in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

2. You think you don’t need a flu vaccine because you’ve never had the flu.

“People think that the flu vaccine prevents you from getting the flu,” Dr. Lamm says. Instead, it lowers your chances of getting the flu, as well as decreases the severity of the illness. In other words, if you’ve been vaccinated and you still get the flu, “you can feel pretty comfortable that things are going to go okay unless you are older or severely immunocompromised or you’re very sick,” he says.

Does Sunscreen Help Acne? An Expert Guide – Kate Somerville US

0

Just like the importance of a gentle cleanser or a moisturizer, any skincare regimen must include sunscreen since it gives vital protection from UV radiation damaging effects and helps to prevent skin deterioration. But for those of us who are acne-prone, a frequent question is, “Does sunscreen actually help with acne?”

The general view is that sunscreen does have some advantages in terms of enhancing general skin health and maybe lowering the number of breakouts. Let’s explore if sunscreen may be an efficient acne treatment and whether it can help you have cleaner skin.

Understanding Acne

Acne is a very common skin issue that happens when hair follicles get clogged with oil, germs, and dead skin cells, leading to irritation and breakouts. There are a few factors that contribute to its occurrence, like producing too much sebum (the skin’s natural oil), hormonal changes, and a family history of acne. To properly manage and treat acne, it’s crucial to understand what causes it.

Taking care of your skin is vital for managing acne. Keeping your skin clean, controlling oil production, and using products that won’t clog your pores (non-comedogenic products) are key aspects of a good skincare routine. Different skin care habits can make a big difference for acne prone skin to help achieve a brighter and clearer complexion.

The Role of Sunscreen in Skincare

Any skincare routine must include sunscreen, as it helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays that can cause skin cancer, sunburns, and early aging. But sunscreen’s advantages go beyond that; by halting the deterioration of collagen and elastin, consistent usage of sunscreen can also support the maintenance of skin health. The strength and suppleness of the skin are provided by these fibers, which over time may become less resilient due to UV exposure. You can maintain a young and healthy appearance by wearing sunscreen every day.

However, sunscreen may still be beneficial for those with acne-prone skin, just like it can for people with other skin types, even though it may not be a cure for acne when it comes to treating it directly. It helps shield the skin from additional harm and provides support for the general state of the skin. So, whether you have acne or not, it’s important to include sunscreen in your skincare routine to keep your skin healthy.

The Link Between Sunscreen and Acne

While sunscreen itself may not directly improve acne, it can play a supportive role in managing and preventing further irritation and damage to the skin. Here’s how sunscreen can help with acne:

  • Protection from UV rays: Some acne treatments, such as topical retinoids and certain antibiotics, can make the skin more sensitive to the sun.Sunscreen helps prevent UV radiation from exacerbating acne and may reduce inflammation caused by sun exposure.
  • Preventing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): Acne breakouts can lead to dark spots or hyperpigmentation on the skin after the blemishes heal. Sunscreen can help prevent these dark spots from worsening by shielding the skin from UV-induced pigmentation.
  • Reducing inflammation: SPF with soothing ingredients, such as zinc oxide or niacinamide, can help calm inflammation associated with acne.
  • Preventing scarring: Since sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UV rays, which could further damage and delay the healing of acne lesions, it helps to potentially reduce the risk of acne scarring.

When it comes to choosing the right sunscreen, it’s important to pick one that best suits your skin type and concerns. If you have acne prone skin, look for non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and oil-free sunscreens labeled “broad-spectrum” to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Different Types of Sunscreen

There are two main types of sunscreen: chemical and physical, also known as mineral sunscreen.

  • Mineral Sunscreen: Physical or mineral sunscreen using ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as active ingredients create a physical barrier, reflecting UV rays away from the skin. They are generally better suited for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
  • Chemical Sunscreen: This type of sunscreen uses ingredients such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octisalate to absorb and filter UV rays. Chemical sunscreen works by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat. While effective for most skin types, some acne-prone individuals may experience skin irritation.

In understanding mineral vs chemical sunscreens, mineral sunscreen tends to be less irritating for acne-prone skin since it doesn’t contain the same chemicals that can potentially irritate the skin and exacerbate acne. There are also sunscreen setting sprays available, like the UncompliKated SPF 50 Setting Spray, that provides an extra layer of protection after makeup applications.

In addition to choosing the right sunscreen, it’s important to pay attention to the SPF level. It’s recommended to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or sweating, as even the best sunscreen will lose its effectiveness over time. It is also crucial to know how much sunscreen to use on your face. Proper application is essential for maximizing sun protection and reducing the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage.

Using Sunscreen in Acne Routine

Sunscreen is important for any skincare regimen, including for those with acne-prone skin. Choosing the right sunscreen and deliberately applying it can protect your skin from harmful UV rays without exacerbating breakouts. Remember to reapply regularly and pair sunscreen with acne treatments for optimal results. Sun protection should be part of your daily routine to maintain healthy and radiant skin while keeping acne at bay. Remember, a broad-spectrum SPF is your best defense against both acne and sun damage, ensuring healthy and glowing skin for the long run.

Sugar Scrubs vs. Coffee Scrubs – Merindah Botanicals

Sugar Scrubs vs. Coffee Scrubs: Which Is Better for Your Skin?

When it comes to exfoliating, two popular choices often stand out: sugar scrubs and coffee scrubs.

While both have their benefits, it’s essential to understand the differences to choose the best option for your skin type and concerns.

Benefits of Sugar Scrubs

Sugar scrubs have long been a favourite for those seeking gentle yet effective exfoliation. Here’s why:

  1. Gentle on the Skin: Sugar crystals are smaller and rounder than coffee grounds, making them less abrasive. This means sugar scrubs are ideal for sensitive skin and everyday use without causing micro-tears or irritation.

  2. Natural Moisturizer: Sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture into the skin. This helps keep your skin hydrated, leaving it soft and supple after each use.

  3. Balanced Exfoliation: Sugar scrubs provide a balanced exfoliation that removes dead skin cells and promotes a natural glow without stripping the skin of its essential oils. This is crucial for maintaining a healthy skin barrier and preventing dryness or flakiness.

The Downside of Coffee Scrubs

While coffee scrubs are known for their invigorating scent and potential to temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite, there are several drawbacks to consider:

  1. Abrasive Texture: Coffee grounds can be quite coarse and abrasive, especially when applied to sensitive or delicate skin. This can lead to irritation, redness, or even small tears in the skin, compromising its natural barrier.

  2. Acidity Concerns: Coffee is naturally acidic, and using it as a scrub can disrupt the skin’s pH balance. A disrupted pH level can lead to dryness, breakouts, or an increase in oil production as the skin attempts to compensate for the imbalance.

  3. Mess and Staining: Coffee scrubs can be quite messy to use, often staining towels, washcloths, and even bathtubs. This added inconvenience can make sugar scrubs a more appealing option for a quick, no-fuss skincare routine.

Why Sugar Scrubs Are the Better Choice

When comparing sugar scrubs to coffee scrubs, sugar scrubs come out on top for several reasons:

  • Gentle yet Effective: Sugar scrubs offer a mild exfoliation that is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, without causing irritation or damage.
  • Moisturising Benefits: As a natural humectant, sugar helps to hydrate the skin, leaving it feeling soft and nourished.
  • Safe for Regular Use: Unlike coffee scrubs, which can be too harsh for frequent use, sugar scrubs can be safely incorporated into your daily or weekly skincare routine.

The Verdict

While coffee scrubs have their place in skincare, particularly for those looking to target specific concerns like cellulite, sugar scrubs are generally a better option for overall skin health.

They provide gentle exfoliation, maintain the skin’s natural pH balance, and deliver hydration—all without the potential downsides of harshness and acidity.

So, if you’re looking to achieve smooth, glowing skin without the risk of irritation, sugar scrubs are your go-to choice. Your skin will thank you!

Why We Love Made by Mitchell

Created by Mitchell Halliday, a young British makeup artist whose love of color and makeup drew him into the world of beauty, Made by Mitchell is sure to deliver your next favorite juicy lip-gloss, statement eyeliner and mood-enhancing summer blush.

Made By Mitchell

With over 1 million followers on Instagram, Halliday embraces color, self-expression, and fashion in a way that has become recognizable and signature both of him and of his brand. Made By Mitchell

Made by Mitchell Products We’re Excited About:

Perhaps the most well-known product is the Blursh – a liquid to powder cream product that is available in blush, bronzer and highlighter shades. This product layers perfectly either underneath or on top of other products and provides a blurring, filter-like finish – hints the name “Blursh.” Because of the dense pigmentation, you can use this product either for a soft wash or apply heavy-handed for statement looks. Also, we love that the Blursh products are suitable for all skin types.

Made By Mitchell

Other fan favorites include products such as: the Graph-ink Liquid Liner and the All Smudge No Budge Rainbow Liner (both available in neutral and neon shades), the Beam Lip Gloss and the palettes – which offer a collection of shades for lip, eyes or face.

Made By Mitchell

Another great call-out we like most about the Made by Mitchell line is the versatility of so many of the products. The Blursh Liquid Blusher, for instance, can be used both for the cheeks and lips and can also be applied on the eyes for a soft wash of color to create a cohesive look. This one product will nearly complete your look while giving the appearance that you invested more time and energy than just the couple of minutes that it really took to blend it into the face. The same goes for the paint palettes which again provide versatility and can be used for concealer, corrector, shadow base, face base, and so much more.

Made By Mitchell

We would say that Made by Mitchell is the perfect brand to explore and shop for makeup artists who specialize in special effects makeup as well as artists who enjoy creating event and party style looks. Of course, there are shades and products to fit everyday wear for all makeup lovers as well and because of this diverse range, we highly recommend to all to explore the products for yourself!

Healthier High-Porosity Hair Starts With These Deeply Moisturizing Oils

0

Because high porosity hair struggles to retain moisture, certain types of oils that seal and reinforce the cuticle are essential for long-term protection. Below are the best oils for high-porosity hair, vetted by experts and chosen by Allure editors for their ability to lock in hydration and support fragile, damage-prone strands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Best for Damaged Hair: Cécred Oil Ritual

Why we love it: If your high-porosity hair feels brittle or snaps during detangling, Cécred’s Oil Ritual delivers the kind of deep nourishment surface oils can’t. This formula features a ferment blend to support the scalp and a trio of African oils, baobab, moringa, and black seed, that slip past raised cuticles to replenish the inner cortex, improving elasticity and reducing breakage. According to hairstylist Cataanda James, “Cecred Oil Ritual is best for those who are coming out of a protective style or prepping their hair for a protective style, for those experiencing sensitized, weak strands from over manipulation when wearing their natural curly texture, and those who wear their strands free flowing like a Wash ‘n Go style that are seeking an intense moisture treatment.” She adds that she’s seen it revive high-porosity hair damaged by bleach, chemicals, and environmental stressors, noting, “The Cecred Oil Ritual is like the old school hot oil treatment popular in the 80s and 90s, without the greasy, coated feel we seemed to yearn for back then.”

“As someone with high-porosity locs that can go from soft to straw-like overnight, I’m always skeptical of miracle hair oils, but Cécred’s Oil Ritual is different. The thick consistency and precision nozzle let me apply it exactly where I need it, right along my parts and the length of each loc, without flooding my scalp or wasting product. Once warmed between my palms, it melts in and actually penetrates. I noticed a real difference during retwisting because my locs were more elastic, and the usual snapping I get during separation was reduced. The peppermint scent adds a cooling, soothing sensation on the scalp that feels especially good after a protective style or retwists.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

  • Key ingredients: manuka oil, phytoferment, African oil blend (baobab, moringa, black seed)
  • Who’s it for: dehydrated, damage-prone, protective-style wearers

Best for Color-Treated Hair: Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil

Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Hair Oil in branded component on a light gray background

Why we love it: Chemical color and bleach weaken the internal structure of hair and worsen high-porosity issues by lifting the cuticle, which is why Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil is a standout. The formula’s bond-building ingredient, bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, actively relinks broken bonds so hair regains strength instead of just getting a temporary shine boost. Grapeseed oil provides antioxidant protection, and fermented green tea oil enhances absorption, allowing the treatment to penetrate rather than sit on the surface.

James says, “On straighter textures (1A to 2B), it works best as a finisher to polish, like adding the icing on the cake.” For curl types 3A to 4C, she notes, “This is the perfect solution: It strengthens and provides heat protection up to 450 degrees, so your hair isn’t frying when the heat meets the oil.” James also loves that it’s “weightless, softens the strands for a more supple feel, controls frizz, and leaves the hair naturally healthier looking overall.”

Tester feedback from managing editor Alessandra Foresto

“I’m a big fan of this Olaplex hair oil for its multitasking ablities. I use it on damp hair after a shower as a heat protector and to prevent frizz (and like to mix it with a leave-in conditioner as I apply), and on dry hair after styling to add glossy shine to my hair. Even when applying it twice in one single styling session, it never leaves my hair oily or greasy.” —Alessandra Foresto, managing editor

  • Key ingredients: bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, grapeseed oil, fermented green tea oil
  • Who’s it for: color-treated or chemically processed hair

Best for Frizz: Hollywood Beauty Batana Oil

Hollywood Beauty Batana Oil in branded component on a light gray background

Hollywood Beauty

Batana Oil

Why we love it: Hair frizzes, tangles, and loses moisture so quickly because its cuticles are lifted, which is why a heavier, sealing oil is often more effective. Hollywood Beauty Batana Oil addresses that structural issue by using batana oil, a palm-derived oil rich in fatty acids, to sit over the lifted cuticle and slow moisture loss after hydration is applied. That sealing action creates immediate softness, better slip during styling, and less breakage from manipulation. Castor oil adds weight and elasticity support, helping strands bend without splitting, while rosemary extract brings antioxidant protection that helps preserve the fiber over time. Used as a warm oil treatment, the blend penetrates more deeply before forming a seal, providing high-porosity hair with both hydration and retention in one step.

Tester feedback from Taylor

“Hollywood Beauty has been a staple in my beauty supply hauls for years, but their new batana oil has officially earned a spot in my loc rotation. The thick, buttery texture feels rich without being greasy, and I just pour a bit into my hands before working it into my scalp and down the length of each loc. Once it’s warmed up between my palms, it absorbs quickly, meaning I’m not left with buildup. I’m using it as a weekly deep treatment or a mid-week moisture reset to keep my locs moisturized, less frizzy, and more flexible.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

  • Key ingredients: batana oil, castor oil, rosemary leaf extract
  • Who’s it for: damage-prone hair dealing with frizz, moisture loss

Best for Heat-Styling: Kérastase Elixir Ultime Hair Oil

Kérastase Elixir Ultime Hair Oil in branded component on a light gray background

Kérastase

Elixir Ultime Hair Oil

Why we love it: If your hair tends to crisp or dull the moment a blow-dryer touches it, Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime Hair Oil is essential. A blend of wild camellia, marula, and argan oils softens the cuticle, adds slip, and reduces friction, allowing strands to bend instead of breaking under heat. Both experts love its ability to protect and revive high-porosity strands without leaving a greasy film. Hairstylist Michele Aquino says, “This oil is a classic for a reason; it seals the cuticle, restores shine, and leaves high-porosity hair feeling silky rather than coated.” Hairstylist James adds, “It melts into the strand like butter, leaves the hair visibly healthy, and feels luxurious…without leaving an oily film.” She also praises its lightweight consistency, noting that it helps heat tools glide through strands with less damage.

  • Key ingredients: wild camellia oil, marula oil, argan oil
  • Who’s it for: all hair types

Best for Product Build-Up: Moska Oil Ceremony

Ceremonia Aceite de Moska in branded dropper component on a light gray background

Why we love it: Buildup is especially harmful on porous hair because any residue sitting at the root or along the strand blocks moisture from entering an already leaky cuticle. Ceremonia’s Aceite de Moska is a pre-shampoo oil designed to clear that barrier before you wash. Passionfruit oil offers antioxidant support, forming a light, protective film upon rinsing. Aquino explains that “the castor and chia seed oils [within the formulation] deeply fortify fragile hair, which is key for clients with textured or chemically treated hair prone to dryness or breakage,” while aloe vera helps calm irritation and keep the scalp balanced. By dissolving debris and excess sebum first, this step enables conditioning and sealing products to actually reach the core, rather than sitting on top. She adds that it’s also “a fantastic pre-wash treatment for anyone trying to repair porosity after lightening or coloring.”

  • Key ingredients: passionfruit oil, castor oil, aloe vera
  • Who’s it for: anyone with scalp buildup, flaking, or oil imbalance

Best for Split Ends: Redken All Soft Argan-6 Oil

Redken All Soft Argan-6 Oil in branded component on a light gray background

Redken

All Soft Argan-6 Oil

Why we love it: Once ends begin to fray, the only way to keep the damage from climbing higher is to reduce friction, and that’s where Redken’s All Soft Argan-6 Hair Oil comes in. The formula combines argan oil, rich in omega-6 fatty acids and vitamin E, with functional silicones that form a smoothing film to cushion the cuticle and minimize mechanical wear from brushing, pillow friction, and heat styling.

Does Your Foundation Use Silicones?

0

Before I got into clean beauty, I would never have known what to look for in my makeup. Silicones?! Seem fine to me!? But, the truth is, I knew nothing about ingredients, what to look for or why most were bad!? So, I set out on a mission, to not only learn more, for myself, but to learn more to share with you too and today, we’re doing a deep dive into the World of silicones so, if you ever find yourself confused on what silicones are, which brands use them the most, why they are bad and where they hid in an ingredient list, this new blog is just for you!

What Are Silicones!?

Silicones are one of the most common ingredients in conventional beauty and makeup products, but they’re also one of the most misunderstood. Silicones are synthetic polymers derived from silica, designed to create a smooth, velvety texture on the skin. You’ll find them in everything from primers and foundations to skincare, because they give that “blurring” effect, fill in fine lines, and make formulas glide on effortlessly, the best right?! While they can create an instant polished or flawless filtered look, the long-term effects on skin are far less glamorous, thus why I always steer clear of them as best I can.

Why Are Silicones Bad?!

One of the main concerns with silicones is how they interfere with the skin’s natural renewal process. Silicones form a semi-occlusive barrier on the surface, which can trap sweat, dead skin cells, sebum, and bacteria underneath, hello breakouts!? Over time, this can lead to congested pores, blackheads, and acne, especially for those with oily or acne-prone skin. Because silicones don’t allow the skin to breathe, regular use can also result in dullness, slower cell turnover, and a compromised barrier, making it harder for active ingredients to penetrate and actually work. To put it simply, silicones create a barrier over your skin to trap bad guys in and keep the good guys out!

Why Brands Use Silicones!?

Many mainstream brands use silicones heavily because they’re cheap, stable, and give an immediate “luxury” slip to products, selling you the illusion of luxury and flawless skin! Brands like House Labs and other celebrity or department store makeup lines rely on them to create that silky, poreless finish. However, that finish is often just a temporary illusion. Once the product is removed, the skin underneath is often found to be much more dehydrated and congested than before. Brands use silicones so often because they give us consumers that instant “wow” moment as they blur pores, smooth skin, and make makeup glide on like silk!

But, the truth is silicones are cheap, chemically stable, and make products feel luxurious, which is why even high-end lines lean on them. Unfortunately, this prioritizes texture over skin health, masking problems rather than addressing them. Silicones can also interfere with the natural exfoliation process, leading to texture buildup, making skin look uneven over time and as we mentioned above, stopping your skincare from working as best as it can which means a total waste of money on your favorite skincare. It can’t work, your silicones are blocking it!

Haus Labs, Summer Fridays, Makeup By Mario, Armani Luminous Silk, Tower 28, Rare Beauty, Fenty Beauty, Saie Beauty, Charlotte Tilbury, Merit Beauty, Estee Lauder Double Wear are just a few of the brands using silicones in their foundations!

How To Spot Them!?

Even scarier, is so many brands market themselves as non comedogenic yet they are loaded with silicones which only make acne-prone skin worse! So, how do we spot them on a label!? Let’s discuss! Not all silicones are the same, but some of the worst offenders for skin health include Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, and Trimethylsiloxysilicate. These are particularly persistent on the skin, harder to wash off, and more likely to trap debris and disrupt the skin’s microbiome. Some cyclic silicones like Cyclopentasiloxane and Cyclohexasiloxane are also flagged for environmental persistence and potential endocrine-disrupting effects, raising both skin and sustainability concerns. Check out how many silicones are in the Haus Labs foundation!? A whopping THIRTEEN!

What To Use Instead!?

Not only do silicones hide in your favorite foundations, they are also in your hair care, skin care and so much more! Switching to silicone-free, clean beauty foundations and skincare is one of the best ways to support your skin’s natural barrier. Here at Organic Bunnywe avoid silicones as often as we can, opting for formulas like the RMS Beauty Revolve Foundation or the Inika Beauty Serum Foundation instead!

The RMS “ReEvolve” Foundation and the Inika Serum Foundation are both excellent clean beauty options, but they target different preferences and skin types. RMS ReEvolve is ideal for anyone who loves a full glam, perfected look as it gives a smooth, pore-blurring finish similar to Estée Lauder Double Wear but with MUCH cleaner ingredients! It has more coverage and a creamier texture, making it perfect for those with larger pores, uneven texture, or those who want a flawless base that holds up beautifully for events or long days.

The Inika Serum Foundation, on the other hand, offers lightweight but impressive coverage that looks and feels more like skin. It’s best for people with balanced or smooth skin texture who want breathable coverage that evens tone without feeling heavy. While it won’t blur pores as much as RMS, it gives a natural, radiant finish that’s perfect for everyday wear, especially if your skin is already in good condition. I use and love both depending on my needs or goals each day! For more glam events, I do RMS. For brunch or more casual glam, I reach for Inika! Both are amazing.

Both formulas allow skin to breathe, regulate oil naturally, and absorb nutrients more effectively, leading to clearer, brighter, and more resilient skin over time. Clean brands often use botanical oils, plant waxes, or natural silicones like squalane to achieve a smooth finish without suffocating the skin. If you’re struggling with acne, clogged pores, or dullness and use conventional makeup daily, eliminating silicones is often a game-changer for restoring long-term skin health! Want to try out a silicone-free foundation but not sure where to start?

This Isn’t Toner. It’s Barrier Rehab in a Milky Disguise.

Dr. Loretta formulated a liquid step you didn’t know you needed.

For a long time, I considered the liquid steps in a skincare routine optional. In most cases, toners or essences filled in gaps where other products fell short. In my twenties, the green toner from Clarins was my go-to—it felt refreshing and delivered a mild astringent effect. My thirties were all about acid toning for a smoother, more radiant complexion. Now, in my mid-forties, I prioritize hydration alongside barrier-repairing and restoring properties.

Which is why I’m absolutely blown away by the newly launched Dr. Loretta Barrier Enhancing Milky Essence. This latest addition does more than just hydrate—it strengthens, soothes, and protects. Allow me to explain why this formula deserves a spot in your routine.

Also, I’m sharing a 15% off code at the bottom of the post.

What Is the Dr. Loretta Milky Essence?

This multi-tasking essence delivers instant hydration while helping subsequent skincare steps absorb more effectively. A lightweight layer shields the skin from environmental aggressors like pollution and UV exposure while reinforcing the skin barrier. Beyond boosting moisture levels, it also calms irritation and supports overall skin health. And healthy skin equals radiant skin.

What’s Inside the Dr. Loretta Essence?

This silky, water-based formula is loaded with skin-loving nutrients. To make it easier to digest, I’ve broken down some key ingredients based on their function. While the full INCI list includes 21 components, here are a few standouts:

Hydration & Moisture

• Glycerin – A humectant that draws moisture into the skin, keeping it plump and hydrated.

• Sodium Hyaluronate – A smaller molecule of hyaluronic acid that deeply hydrates by binding water to the skin.

• Squalane – A lightweight, non-comedogenic emollient that mimics the skin’s natural oils, sealing in moisture.

• Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride – A coconut-derived conditioning agent that helps prevent moisture loss.

Barrier Support & Skin Repair

• Niacinamide – A multitasking powerhouse that strengthens the skin barrier, improves tone, reduces redness, and minimizes pores.

• Ectoin – A protective molecule that shields against environmental stress and reinforces barrier function.

• Phospholipids – Lipid molecules that enhance the skin’s moisture retention and resilience.

Soothing & Calming

• Jojoba Seed Oil – A nourishing oil that closely resembles the skin’s natural sebum, offering lightweight hydration.

• Saccharomyces Lysate Extract – A fermented ingredient rich in antioxidants and amino acids, known for barrier repair and hydration.

How Does It Feel and Fit into a Routine?

The Barrier Enhancing Milky Essence has a slightly thicker consistency than water and appears semi-translucent. It’s best applied after cleansing and exfoliating but before serums and moisturizers. Instead of using a cotton pad, pour a few drops into your palm, rub your hands together, and press it into the skin. It absorbs instantly, leaving no sticky residue. Plus, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for twice-daily use.

My Experience with Dr. Loretta’s Milky Essence

From the very first use, my skin felt softer and noticeably more hydrated. With continued application, I’ve seen a visible glow and a significant reduction in redness. It’s become my go-to for hydrating and prepping my skin, restoring barrier balance after exfoliating, and soothing post-shave irritation.

Unlike many new skincare launches that leave me unimpressed, this one delivers on every front. Thoughtfully formulated and effective, the Barrier Enhancing Milky Essence is already in steady rotation as my post-cleanse go-to. I’m currently carefully planning my travel bag for a month-long trip and I’m pretty certain this one is coming along.

Lung Cancer In Women Is Often Overlooked. Here Are the Symptoms You Should Know

0

Cancer screenings exist to try to detect the disease in its earlier stages, and ultimately to save lives. But screenings for lung cancer—the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide—are narrow, and that’s causing missed diagnoses in many people, especially women and those who have never smoked.

That’s the main takeaway from a new JAMA Network Open study that suggests most lung cancer cases are missed due to these guidelines. Current guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) suggests annual lung cancer screenings for adults between the ages of 50 and 80 with a 20 pack-year smoking history and who currently smoke or who have quit within the past 15 years. That’s leaving out a lot of vulnerable people.

Why do these guidelines matter? They influence insurance coverage, and paying out of pocket for screening if you don’t fall under the recommended criteria isn’t cheap. Plus, many people won’t get screened for something if it’s not recommended.

“Lung cancer has the worst record for screening detection of all the cancers,” David Carbone, MD, PhD, oncologist and chair of lung cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, tells SELF. “At least part of that is all the restrictions we have on lung cancer screening.”

Here’s what the study found, plus what oncologists recommend doing to stay on top of your lung health.

What did the study find?

For the study, researchers analyzed data from nearly 1,000 patients treated for lung cancer at Northwestern Medicine. After looking at their health data, the researchers found that just 35% of those lung cancer patients would have qualified for screening based on USPSTF criteria. Two-thirds of those patients were disproportionately women and people who have never smoked.

Based on the findings, the researchers recommend expanding the screening to focus on people between the ages of 40 to 85. This would detect 94% of lung cancers and prevent more than 26,000 extra deaths each year, according to their estimates. The researchers also found that this would be cost-effective, with minimal risks from radiation exposure or biopsies outweighing the potential to save lives. “Age-based screening could improve detection and cost-effectiveness while reducing disparities,” the researchers wrote.

Detecting early signs of lung cancer can be hard.

Doctors agree that the current lung cancer screening guidelines aren’t great. “It does seem that expanding the age range for screening would help,” George Chaux, MD, a pulmonologist and medical director of Interventional Pulmonary at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, tells SELF.
