Here are my 2023 Holiday Gift Guides – created by yours truly! Whew, these take sometime, but I truly LOVE doing them. I pour a lot into these gift giving guides and I hope that you find them helpful during the season!

I recently came across Then I Met You’s The Giving Essence, first spotting it via a mention on LinkedIn, of all places, before Cult Beauty decided I needed to see it again in an ad.

It really piqued my interest, initially because of the beautifully photogenic packaging; then further investigation of its ingredients promising hydration, brightness, and an all-around improved skin texture.

With skincare, there’s always a bit of skepticism, especially when products promise the moon. But given the buzz and my own curiosity about whether it could live up to the claims–and for £51 but with an extra 15% off on Cult Beauty–I decided to dive in and give it a thorough trial. So, here’s a closer look at what this essence offers and my take on whether it delivers.

The Ingredients

Let’s unpack the ingredients list to understand the science behind its skincare promises of hydration, brightness, and improved skin texture.

Its also super-calming and has been a life-saver for me over the last year due to very skin-disrupting medications.
  • Ellagic Acid: Perhaps less familiar to some, ellagic acid is a natural antioxidant found in berries. It’s celebrated for its skin-brightening properties and ability to protect against UV damage and collagen degradation, all without harming the skin’s cells.

My Take on The Ingredients:

The thoughtfully curated ingredients list of The Giving Essence speaks to its potential as a skincare powerhouse. It’s also for all skin types and from the driest to the oiliest, this gives hydration that’ll blend really well with your other products.

The combination of fermented filtrates, niacinamide, and a mix of acids and natural extracts promises a well-rounded approach to skin health. It’s clear that Then I Met You aimed to create a product that goes beyond surface-level beauty and goes well beyond its glossy-branding to focus on nourishing and protecting the skin. I can completely attest to it.

The inclusion of ellagic acid is particularly interesting, offering a natural approach to skin brightening and protection that doesn’t rely on harsh chemicals or potential irritants!

Charlotte Cho, the brand founder, was inspired to start Then I Met You after experiencing the depth and effectiveness of Korean skincare during her time in South Korea. How I Find The Then I Met You – The Giving Essence

After incorporating The Giving Essence into my skincare routine and continuing to do so, I’ve gathered some key observations worth sharing

Application and Absorption

The essence requires about 5-10 drops, depending on your skin’s level of dehydration post-cleanse. What impresses me is how quickly it absorbs into the skin, a feature I attribute to the thoughtful design of the bottle, which allows for controlled dispensing akin to high-end products like La Mer–The Treatment Lotion.

Usage Tips

For optimal results, I apply the essence to my face and neck while my skin is still warm from washing, using 5-10 drops for full coverage. I’ve found that waiting about 30 seconds before applying my next skincare product allows the essence to fully penetrate and set the stage for enhanced product synergy.

In sum, The Giving Essence has earned its place in my daily skincare lineup, not just for its immediate benefits but for its potential long-term impact on my skin’s health and appearance. Give it a try!

This easy, make your eyes pop, multichrome makeup look takes only five minutes to put together. Here’s what you’ll need to recreate at home in case you don’t have the exact same items I do:

1. What’s the best thing about rainy days?

Hmm, for me it’s a mix of things with one of them being the clean scent of the air after it rains. And back in the day I would say puddle stomping with baby Connor. Side note, would you believe she’s almost 10? Anyways, now I think the best thing about rainy days is the chances of wildfires happening are less, which is a big mental relief.

2. Where’s your happy place?

At Lanikai beach in the morning on Oahu. Or in my bed at night, when I know everyone I love is under the same roof. 🙂

3. Can you do any accents?

Well, I’m pretty sure I’ve got “Angry Filipino Mom Speaking American English Mixed with Random Tagalog Words” down pat! HAHAHA! I also used to do a very silly British accent but haven’t in years. Oh, and I can do a California surfer accent decently!

4. What’s a funny little habit that you have?

I always pack too many snacks in my work lunch box. I don’t know why. We have pretty awesome vending machines on campus, and there’s always extra food in the breakroom, so it’s not like I don’t have access to snacks. For some reason, though, I feel so much better knowing that I have a variety of relatively healthy snacks that I know I like to choose from. Or, if someone around me has a rumbly tummy, I like knowing that I’ve got extra food for someone else.

5. Something beauty related that you desperately need to buy?

I’m running low on conditioner. When you have long, wavy hair, this is a very nerve-wracking thing!

With inflation and rising interest rates adding to the pressures on households, the Interac research shows that 67% of Canadians are practicing ‘intentional spending.’ That means most are making purposeful purchasing decisions that live up to their financial goals and personal values.

Financial Hardships

As shoppers turn to various ways to help them through these financial hardships and maintain more control over their money in new economic times, they are looking for creative ways to help them spend more mindfully. As we enjoy fewer restrictions than we did during earlier stages of the pandemic, the opportunities and temptations to spend are rising. This couples with the rising prices and inflation rates is creating havoc in many people’s lives.

Spending Habits

Over half of Canadians are less likely to spend on impulse now than they were before the pandemic. Interac transaction data shows that Canadians used Interac Debit to conduct nearly 7% more transactions this past summer compared to spring 2022. Summer is typically associated with higher spending. This increase was felt mostly at eating places, going up by nearly 60% this past summer versus 2021. Fifty per cent of Gen Z adults report they are spending more money because of increased social activities, compared to 20% of Boomers.

Spending What You Have

At a time when money worries appear to be rising, 18% link intentional spending with feeling restricted. Instead, 77% have positive associations, including feeling in control, disciplined, thoughtful, empowered, happy and considerate. Four in 10 Canadians say they are hesitant to use credit and prefer to only spend the money they have.

Shopping With Intention

Canadians are making an effort to purchase what they need rather than what they want. The data shows that 62% want tools which encourage intentional spending. More than half say inflation is making it more difficult to afford the things they need. Six in ten people are spending more on essentials than they were even three months ago. Spending on gas and groceries has increased approximately 9% and 4% respectively in the last three months.

Shopping Music

Interac launched Sound Shopping, a new music track that provides a balanced backdrop to the shopping experience. It’s intended to promote mindful spending at a time of financial anxiety so people can feel like they are in control of their spending. Those who participated in the research observed that the Sound Shopping track made them feel calmer than those who listened to popular music.

Over six in 10 Canadians who practice intentional spending take a pause and think about purchases before making them. When it comes to making non-essential purchases, taking at least a one-day pause before completing the transaction often leads to increased satisfaction.
