Why We Never Use Phenoxyethanol in Our Skincare

0

When it comes to natural skincare, there’s one thing you deserve above all else: transparency.

That’s why we want to talk about an ingredient that’s become increasingly common in the beauty world — Phenoxyethanol.

You’ll find it in many products today, from cleansers to moisturisers, often even in ranges that call themselves “clean” or “natural.”

But just because something is everywhere, doesn’t mean it belongs on your skin.

At Merindah Botanicals, we take a hard pass on Phenoxyethanol. Here’s why.

What Is Phenoxyethanol?

Phenoxyethanol is a synthetic preservative used to prevent products from spoiling. It helps extend shelf life by protecting against bacteria, yeast and mould. Because it’s effective and relatively inexpensive, it’s widely used in mainstream and even “greenwashed” skincare products.

You’ll often see it included in products that are labelled “paraben-free,” and it’s sometimes positioned as the safer alternative to parabens.

So, Is Phenoxyethanol Safe?

While small amounts of Phenoxyethanol are generally regarded as safe in cosmetics, this ingredient is not without controversy.

Some potential concerns include:
✔️ Skin irritation or allergic reactionsespecially on sensitive skin
✔️ Potential impact on the nervous system at higher exposure levels (studies suggest caution for infants and breastfeeding mothers)
✔️ Environmental impactas synthetic preservatives do not readily biodegrade

For some, these risks may seem small. For us, they’re not worth it.

Why We Choose to Avoid Phenoxyethanol

At Merindah Botanicals, we believe that true clean beauty doesn’t come with compromises.

Our products are crafted with 100% natural, plant-based ingredientsso you’ll never find synthetic preservatives like Phenoxyethanol, parabens, or anything else that doesn’t align with our philosophy.

Instead, we carefully formulate using safe, natural preservation systems — including antioxidant-rich oils, plant extracts, and naturally derived preservatives that are kind to both skin and planet.

Our belief is simple:
If it’s not safe enough for sensitive skin and everyday use, it’s not going in our products.

How To Layer Products – skinfo

0

It can be a challenge to build the perfect skincare regimen. First, you must figure out which ingredients work for your skin type. Then, you have to find something that feels good on your skin. And finally, you must find something that works to improve your skin. Now that you have established your skincare routine, the next question is…in what order do I apply all of these products?

Of course, you always need to start by cleansing your skin. If wearing makeup, you will want to cleanse twice to ensure your makeup is removed and your skin is completely clean. If you use any prescription products such as acne medication or a retinoid, this will go on next. The rule of thumb is to layer your products from thinnest to thickest in consistency. Typically, serums have a small molecular size to penetrate deep into the skin, so that will likely be your next step.

If you use multiple serums, apply the serum that addresses your main concern first. In most cases, you will begin with an antioxidant serum such as vitamin C during the day, followed by a serum that helps with pigment, anti-aging, or hydration. It’s always good to give yourself a minute in between products so they can absorb. I usually suggest that patients apply a product, brush their teeth, layer another product, get dressed, etc.

The time of day will determine your next couple of steps. If it’s daytime, apply your eye cream, then moisturizer, and SPF last. If you are doing your routine at night, next would be your retinol, eye cream, and finish with a moisturizer.

Keep in mind that depending on what you use, there may be exceptions to these guidelines. For example, some brands tell you to apply the moisturizer before the serum. Also, some vitamin Cs and retinol instruct you to use twice a day instead of just once. You want to be sure to read the instructions on your products before you use them. Please reach out to your estheticians or skin care specialists at skinfo® to find the perfect products for your skin.

Camera Ready Cosmetics’ Top Picks

This year, we proudly introduced our Camera Ready Creators Program and wanted to share some of their top picks, too, since they all specialize in a specific form of artistry.

Carissa St. Clair’s Top Picks: As a makeup artist that specializes in bridal I tend to gravitate towards long wearing products and neutral tones. I have tried countless products and brands over the years and I have to say my tried and true products that I will forever repurchase are the Face Atelier color adjusters, Embryolissee Concentrated Milk Cream and the Make Up For Ever HD skin foundation. As a makeup artist that works on all skin tones the Face Atelier color adjusters are a godsend!! They ensure you get a PERFECT color match and can be mixed with so many different foundations!

Jurnee Gabriel’s Top Picks: If there’s one product that I know will save me in a pinch, it’s Danessa Myricks Colorfix. They’re essentially multipurpose makeup paints that can be used everywhere! I mean what product do you know that can go from color corrector, to bleached brows, lipliner, or colored mascara? The list doesn’t end! A new love for me is that Senna Cosmetics Mini SlipCover Cream to Powder Palette. These other blush palettes simply cannot compete! I have every shade on hand to mimic my clients’ natural flush. Plus the cream to powder formula is perfect for the low maintenance girlies.

Kathy O’Conner’s Top Picks: NOTHING delivers the same amount of coverage like Kryolan Professional Make-Up TV Paint Stick! An absolute staple for all of the full coverage and drag girlies! Other must-haves are Inglot AMC Gel Liner in 77 (THE blackest eyeliner on the market. The only liner that will not crease, and stays on until you scrub it off!) and Ben Nye Final Seal Matte Sealer.

Kristen Fiori’s Top Picks: The MYKITCO On Point Sharpener is something that you don’t realize you need until you have it! I now have two backups just in case I misplace it because it’s that good! It’s truly the best sharpener I’ve ever tried – perfectly sharpens pencils with precision and holds all the shavings to keep everything neat. It’s pure perfection! The Danessa Myricks Groundwork Palette is hands down my favorite new product this year! The palette’s array of neutral shades is breathtaking, and each shade comes in both pomade and powder form. This versatile palette is usable for eyebrows, eyeshadow, eyeliner, contour, lips – you name it, the possibilities are endless!

Michael Harris’s Top Picks: The Bdellium Tools Golden Triangle Brushes for Eyes 788GT is a great brush for blending concealer and getting in those nooks and crannies of the face! I do a ton of weddings and special events and sometimes those events start early in the morning, so I love using Melanie Mills Hollywood Super Lite Long Lasting Sealing Spray – it makes the make up bulletproof.

Squalane Oil Benefits for Nourished Skin

0

Every so often a skincare ingredient comes along and is a total game-changer. Squalane is one of those hero ingredients and you’ll be seeing it everywhere. Don’t let its name fool you, squalane oil actually reduces shine, all while smoothing fine lines, calming redness, and supporting the skin’s barrier. Nourishing dehydrated skin while plumping and smoothing your complexion, squalane oil really nails it when it comes to multitasking.

What is Squalane?

You may have noticed two different spellings—squalene vs squalane. Squalane is the hydrogenated version of squalene, which is a naturally occurring liquid found in human sebum (oil). But just like collagen and hyaluronic acid, as we age, our body produces less and less of these key ingredients that keep our skin looking young.

You’re likely more familiar with squalane than squalene because squalane is a more stable form and has a longer shelf life. Not to mention, it’s harvested in a much more ethical manner—and you know how we feel about that. Squalene was also a controversial ingredient as in some practices it was harvested from shark livers—no thank you. Our squalane is vegan and sourced from sugar cane. And if you’re wondering why sugar cane, it’s because the ingredient is highly pure, 100% bio-based, and sustainably sourced.

What Does Squalane Do?

Squalane is a key ingredient for keeping your moisture barrier in check. Having a damaged moisture barrier is likely the reason why your skin is presenting a variety of concerns from dryness and dehydration to redness and irritation. And, in case you forgot, here’s a quick refresher on how the moisture barrier works. Let’s say you suffer from breakouts and have been going heavy on the chemical exfoliants to try and banish your blemishes. Chemical exfoliants are all good when used as directed, but overuse can cause your skin to become tight, red, and dehydrated and can even lead to more breakouts. Enter squalane oil. This incredibly lightweight emollient calms and soothes as it strengthens and repairs. It does double-duty to not only reverse the damage but also prevent more damage, so skin stays moisturized and protected. Plus it’s non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores, making it suitable for all skin types, including acne-prone.

Is Squalane Right For Me?

Long story short, if you want soft, dewy skin for days, then yes. Squalane makes the perfect addition to almost any routine, from oily skin to mature skin and everything in between. And the best part is, it doesn’t have to be its own step unless you want it to be of course. Our favorite method is combining a squalane oil with a moisturizer.

Which Squalane Products Should I Use?

The sure fire way to reap all of the squalane oil benefits is through a face oil. If you’re nervous about using a face oil, don’t be. Our Phyto-Active Conditioning Oil Drops are an amazing squalane-based face oil that strengthens and repairs skin, softens fine lines, increases radiance, decreases redness and works for all skin types.

If you’re still hesitant to jump on the face oil train, try a squalane-based moisturizer in heavier formulations like the Vita E Essential Cream and Restorative Cream, or mix squalane with hyaluronic acid in the HA-Revive Hyaluronic Hydrator for a hydration focus.

Another way to add squalane to lips and extra chapped bits is with our multi-purpose Barrier Balm. It acts as a nourishing salve you can top up throughout the day. If you’re looking for a more intensive treatment, try the Restorative Mask for the ultimate squalane pampering session.

And, you prefer your squalane with a side of vitamin C and SPF, our hybrid skincare, suncare, and complexion tint C-Shield Anti-Pollution Moisturizing Tint will be your new go-to.

You can of course mix and match all these squalane powered products to find a combination that’s right for your skin.

When Will I See Results From Squalane?

While the majority of squalane oil benefits will come from continued use, this is one ingredient that offers some immediate results. Upon application, you should notice an instant illumination and skin should feel deeply nourished and comforted.

5 things I’m doing with my personal style in 2025

0

I mean, January is always a time for reflection right?

So I’ve taken that time to really looking into where I’m going with my own personal style. It’s definitely in a state of change, and I’m not sure where it’s going, but here are five things I’m going to focus on this year….

buying less, wearing more

I know this sounds obvious, but I actually can’t wait to shop my own wardrobe this year. Creating my own fashion label has certainly shifted my perspective on shopping. I now compare EVERYTHING to my own pieces and ask myself, which would I wear more….

“practising” new looks

I’e already set aside a morning later this week to create a minimum of 30, yes THIRTY new outfits from pieces I already own. I’m going to try a bunch on and photograph them so I have a back catalogue to refer to on days when getting dressed and being creative is in the ’too-hard” basket

Stepping into my style, not trends

Don’t get me wrong, girl loves a trend, but last year I found myself leaning too deeply into trends, and not being true to my own sense of style. the end result? I felt ‘meh’ or like I was trying too hard.

Dressing “my age”

I’m being facetious – I’m 44 – what does a 44-year-old wear? Whatever the fuck she wants. period. It’s time to stop caring what others think. I’m dressing for ME.

Choosing “fashion” or “flattering” and being ok with both

I wrote a blog on this at the end of last year (you can read it here). I love the idea of a look being either “fashion” ie, edgy, oversized, on-trend… or “flattering” – designed to show off your body shape and best bits.

Yes some looks can be both, but others aren’t and thats ok! It’s important to know the diference and which one you are leaning  into on any given day.

so that’s my five, I’d love to hear where you are going with your personal style… and if you’re not sure, I’m here to help!

How to Build a Clean Beauty Routine That Actually Works – 100% PURE

0

In a time when beauty trends change by the minute and product shelves overflow with options, creating a clean beauty routine that truly delivers results can seem daunting. The truth is, you don’t need an elaborate collection of products or complex steps to get radiant, healthy skin. What really matters is finding balance, practicing mindfulness, and choosing natural skincare steps that nourish your skin from within.

Whether you’re new to skincare or simply ready to streamline your regimen, this guide will help you build a clean, effective, and sustainable beauty routine featuring gentle, plant-powered essentials from 100% PURE.

What Does “Clean Beauty” Really Mean?

The term “clean beauty” isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a philosophy rooted in mindful product choices. It means opting for skincare that is free of harmful chemicals, synthetic fragrances, parabens, and toxins that may impact your skin or the planet. Instead, clean beauty emphasizes truly pure, naturally derived ingredients that nourish and protect without compromise.

Following a clean beauty routine also means embracing awareness: knowing what you’re putting on your skin, and why. When you select products with minimal and transparent ingredient lists, you’re choosing long-term skin wellness over quick fixes. Research supports this shift, a study conducted by Harvard found that many conventional skincare products contained irritation- or allergen-linked ingredients, underlining the benefit of cleaner formulations.

For skincare beginners, this is excellent news: fewer, carefully chosen products can create a more sustainable and effective routine, one that honors both your skin and your values.

Step-by-Step Clean Beauty Routine for Beginners

Let’s break down a simple yet powerful routine that nurtures your skin from morning to night using 100% PURE products.

Morning Routine

Step 1: Cleanse Gently with Rose Water Gentle Cleanser

Start your day by washing away impurities without stripping your skin’s natural moisture barrier. The Rose Water Gentle Cleanser is formulated with soothing rose hydrosol, white tea, and seaweed to refresh and calm your skin.

Unlike harsh foaming cleansers, this one cleanses softly leaving your skin balanced, not tight. It’s the perfect first step in any clean beauty routine, especially for sensitive or dry skin types.

Step 2: Refresh and Hydrate with Rose Water Face Mist

Think of this as your morning wake-up call for your complexion. The Rose Water Face Mist helps tone, soothe, and deliver instant hydration.

Rich in antioxidants, rose water restores pH balance and preps your skin for the next step. Spritz it before serum or throughout the day whenever your skin needs a boost especially in dry climates or after makeup application.

Step 3: Brighten and Protect with Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants you can give your skin. It helps fade dark spots, boost radiance, and strengthen the skin against pollution and sun damage.

This serum from 100% PURE is derived from stabilized magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and enriched with green apple and grape extracts to promote youthful luminosity. Applying it in the morning helps shield your skin from oxidative stress while encouraging a natural glow, a cornerstone of any natural skincare step.

Step 4: Lock in Moisture with Hydra Drench Cream

Hydration is essential for all skin types, and the Hydra Drench Cream is lightweight yet deeply nourishing. Made with chia seed gel, rose hydrosol, and aloe vera, this cream helps your skin retain moisture throughout the day.

Its fast-absorbing formula makes it perfect for layering under makeup or SPF. The result? Soft, dewy, and balanced skin.

Step 5: Brighten the Eyes with Coffee Bean Caffeine Brightening Eye Cream

This cult-favorite eye cream combines coffee and green tea caffeine to reduce puffiness, boost circulation, and lighten dark circles. The gentle formula also includes vitamin E and rosehip oil to hydrate and protect the delicate under-eye area.

It’s an easy but powerful step to add to your clean beauty routine, especially if you struggle with tired-looking eyes.

Step 6: Protect with Green Tea SPF 30

No skincare routine is complete without sun protection. The Green Tea SPF 30 offers broad-spectrum protection with zinc oxide while nourishing your skin with antioxidant-rich green tea, aloe vera, and raspberry seed oil.

Unlike many sunscreens, it blends seamlessly without leaving a white cast making it ideal for daily wear. Think of SPF as the final, most essential layer in your natural skincare steps.

Evening Routine

Your nighttime skincare should focus on recovery and renewal.

Step 1: Cleanse Again with Cleanser

Remove makeup, sunscreen, and impurities accumulated during the day. The gentle, non-drying formula keeps your skin’s barrier intact.

Step 2: Mist Again for Soothing Hydration

A few spritzes of the Rose Water Face Mist help calm and hydrate your skin after cleansing, prepping it for serum and moisturizer.

Step 3: Reapply Serum (or Alternate)

If your skin tolerates daily Vitamin C use, reapply it at night to enhance collagen production. Otherwise, rotate with a hydrating or repair-focused serum.

Step 4: Moisturize Deeply with Cream

Nighttime is when your skin repairs itself. Applying Hydra Drench Cream helps seal in moisture and supports natural regeneration while you sleep.

Step 5: Eye Care Before Bed

Reapply Coffee Bean Caffeine Brightening Eye Cream to boost circulation and hydration overnight.

Optional: Once or twice a week, add a gentle exfoliant or mask to clear buildup and refresh your skin.

100% Pure Coffee Bean Eye Cream

The Mindful Skincare Mindset

A truly clean beauty routine goes beyond products; it’s about creating small, daily rituals that connect you to your body and environment.

Here are a few mindful skincare habits to adopt:

Stay consistent: The most effective skincare routine is the one you stick to. Results take time.

Simplify: You don’t need 10 steps, start with five and listen to your skin.

Hydrate from within:Drink plenty of water and eat antioxidant-rich foods.

Sleep well: Your skin regenerates at night, let your routine support that process.

Introduce products gradually: Especially if you’re new to natural skincare, patch test and add one product at a time.

Mindfulness means treating your skincare time as self-care, not a chore.

Adjusting for Your Skin Type

Even the best skincare for beginners can benefit from personalization.

Oily/Combination Skin: Focus on lightweight hydration (Hydra Drench Cream) and consistent cleansing. Avoid over-exfoliation.

Dry Skin: Layer mist and cream, and consider a few drops of facial oil for extra nourishment.

Sensitive Skin: Stick to fragrance-free, soothing products like the Rose Water line and always patch test new additions.

Dull Skin: Make Vitamin C Serum and gentle exfoliation your best friends.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even with the best products, it’s easy to sabotage your routine with a few common errors:

  • Skipping SPF — it’s non-negotiable, even on cloudy days.
  • Using too many actives at once — more isn’t always better.
  • Ignoring your skin’s cues — dryness, redness, or breakouts are messages.
  • Constantly switching products — give each one at least 2–4 weeks to show results

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What exactly is a clean beauty routine?

A clean beauty routine focuses on using products made with safe, non-toxic, and naturally derived ingredients. It avoids harmful additives like parabens, sulfates, or synthetic fragrances. Clean beauty is all about being mindful choosing skincare that supports your health and the planet without sacrificing results.

How do I know if a product is “clean”?

Can natural skincare steps really deliver visible results?

Absolutely. Natural doesn’t mean less effective, it means safer, more nourishing, and often more sustainable. Ingredients like Vitamin C, green tea, and rose water deliver clinically proven benefits, from brightening to hydration and protection.

How long does it take to see results from a clean beauty routine?

Everyone’s skin is unique, but consistency is key. Most people start noticing improvements in 2–4 weeks of regular use smoother texture, fewer breakouts, and a natural glow. Stick to your routine and give your skin time to adjust.

Should I use SPF if I’m indoors all day?

Apollon Morpheus with Gents Bracelets

0

Aside from my watch and wedding ring, I tend to wear a lot of male bracelets particularly those which feature of a skull and my interest and obsession all stemmed from Pinterest on which here you can see that I have a rather large board featuring bracelets costing anywhere from £5 to £5,000 that I would love to adorn my wrists.Aldi Lacura Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit Dupe
Apollon Morpheus with Gents Bracelets

The Apollo Morpheus bracelet from Gents Bracelet is the latest addition to my collection and it is just beautiful.   Gents Bracelets describe themselves as follows:

In this day and age of price wars in a race to the bottom between brands, quality inevitably begins to suffer. It’s a shame because, for the discerning gentlemen of today, quality is everything. It’s easy to tell when something has been crafted with love, skill, care, and attention. Gents Bracelets are breaking the mould and turning heads with our quality over quantity ethos… We don’t cut corners.

With Gents Bracelets, the word quality is one which features quite a lot descriptively alongside their products and this is because it is of such high importance.  Not only is each individual bracelet made from the highest quality leather, the production of the bracelet is just as important and this is due to the fact that only use leather that accrues at the traditional slaughter as a “Waste product“. At approximately 6mm wide, the bracelet isn’t too wide that it excessively heavy, but it is big enough that it stands out.

Apollon Morpheus with Gents Bracelets
Apollon Morpheus with Gents Bracelets

Aside from the bracelet being of the highest quality, it also arrives in a stunning black box which has an pull string opening.  Inside there is a leather pouch which contains your chosen item and again, the presentation is just stunning.

Designed to be adaptable, comfortable and stylish, this bracelet is made of high quality materials.  What stood out to me was the bright white leather of the wristband which contrasts perfectly with my summer tanned arms and it also works well sitting amongst the other bracelets from within my collection, of all which are black.  This bracelet also features two black skulls and it is here that the craftmanship comes into its own.  Made from shiny stainless steal and the details, right now to the teeth is just incredible and to finish the black magnetic fastener is made of stainless steel with the gents bracelets engrave on the reverse.

The Apollon Morpheus Stack is a set of two individual men bracelets that is offered for a special price. Of course, both skull bracelets can be worn individually. Also ideal as a gift and at the mention of gifts and with Christmas on the horizon, the lovely people at Gents Bracelets have given me a bracelet, exactly the same as the one above to give away to one of you.  All you have to do is complete the widget below!

Lash Shedding Season – The Eyelash Emporium

0

As springtime approaches, we thought we’d give you the lowdown on lash shedding season. In the spring and autumn, we have witnessed so many lash clients wonder why they’re losing more lashes, and so many lash artists wonder why the retention of their sets is decreasing. Fear not, because we have the answer – it’s all part of lash shedding season and it is completely natural.

So, what is lash shedding season?

In a similar way that animals lose their heavy coat for the hotter weather, as humans, we also shed our hair (including our lashes) for the change in temperatures to come. Summer weather can cause some clients’ skin to sweat and produce more oils which will affect retention, and Winter weather with its lower humidity levels can cause lashes to become more brittle and fall out easier. In a regular lash shed cycle, we can lose up to 5-7 natural lashes per day, however this can increase dramatically in Spring and Autumn in preparation for the temperature changes. This is what’s referred to as ‘Lash Shedding Season’.

The loss of lashes often goes unnoticed for people without lash extensions as the natural lashes are so fine, but when you have individual lash extensions or fans attached to your natural lashes, it can become more noticeable. It is for this reason we need to make sure that both lash artists and their clients are educated on their natural lash cycle.

Should I talk to my clients about lash shedding season?

It is crucial to educate yourself and your clients about lash shedding season. If unaware of how this may affect retention, lash artists can often worry that their adhesives aren’t performing as well as usual, or whether they need to alter their lashing surroundings, when the actual reason is out of their control.

Just before the lash shed approaches, start to discuss it with your clients and inform them of what to expect throughout lash shedding season. Talk about how it is a natural process and they shouldn’t worry. You can suggest lash serums to them to help strengthen their natural lashes and may also want to recommend they come for an infill sooner than they usually would.

Is there any way I can help to limit the affects of the lash shedding season?

Unfortunately, there is no product that can stop nature from taking its cause. The best thing to do is to acknowledge the lash shedding season and implement steps to limit its affect on our clients.

The lash shed can affect clients differently, so make sure you are making unique notes on each client regarding retention and how they are being affected at every appointment. From this, figure out appropriate infill times. Throughout lash shed, clients may need to come in more frequently for their infills to keep on top of the lashes they are losing. If they are not comfortable doing so, retail your clients a non-oil-based mascara such as our Feature Length Nourishing Mascara to help disguise those gaps in-between appointments.

Another great product recommendation would be our Stunt Double Lash Growth Serum. This amazing serum is formulated for use with eyelash extensions and can increase lash density by up to 79%. Helping to speed up and fill out the growth of natural lashes, this product is great to retail to clients to give them confidence during the lash shed.

Eyelash shedding season occurs twice a year in Spring and Autumn when temperatures begin to change. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to prevent this, but it is crucial to educate yourself and your clients regarding the lash shed. Shorten infill times or retail supporting products to help get through this period, but most importantly, remember it is only natural! Don’t let your clients get worried and don’t think the shorter retention times reflect your work.

If you want to find out more or need further advice on lash shedding season, get in touch.
