Why sunscreen is important year-round

0

When the sun shines brightly in Western Canada, many people flock outdoors to bask in its warmth. However, what often goes overlooked is the crucial role sunscreen plays in protecting our skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunscreen is not just a summer accessory; it is an important part of a daily skincare routine, regardless of the season. Understanding its benefits can help you embrace a healthier lifestyle while enjoying your time outdoors.

Sunscreen is essential for protecting the skin from damage caused by UV radiation. Its primary benefit is shielding the skin from UVA and UVB rays – the two main types of ultraviolet radiation.  UVA rays contribute to premature skin aging and tanning while UVB rays are responsible for sunburn. Both can increase the risk of skin cancer.

The Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to ensure protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Before going outdoors apply on all exposed skin including the lips and reapply every 2 hours or more frequently if sweating heavily or swimming. For a list of CDA recognized products visit Sunscreen – Canadian Dermatology Association.

Regular use of sunscreen doesn’t just prevent burns – it can also prevent signs of premature aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Dermatological studies show that a daily application of sunscreen can slow down the skin’s aging process, helping maintain a more youthful appearance.

Even with the best intentions, sometimes a sunburn happens. Sunburns occur when the skin is overexposed to UV radiation, leading to inflammation, redness and irritation. If you find yourself suffering from a sunburn, take immediate steps to alleviate discomfort and promote healing.

What to Do If You Get Sunburned

  1. Cool the Skin

Apply a cool compress or take a cool bath to lower skin temperature and reduce swelling. Avoid hot showers, as they can intensify the burning sensation and irritation.

  1. Moisturize

Once skin is cooled, apply a fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe vera gel to soothe the affected areas. Ingredients like chamomile or calendula can also offer calming effects.

  1. Stay Hydrated

Sunburn draws moisture to the skin’s surface, increasing your risk of dehydration. Drink plenty of water to rehydrate your body.  You can also try mineral water sprays from brands like Avene or La Roche-Posay help to hydrate your skin and cool the skin externally for immediate relief.

  1. Avoid Further Sun Exposure

Protect sunburned skin by keeping it covered and staying out of direct sunlight until it is fully healed. Continued exposure can worsen damage and delay recovery.

  1. Consider a Pain Reliever if Needed

If sunburn pain is not tolerable or interferes with sleep, non-prescription pain relievers such as ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation. Always consult your pharmacist or doctor to ensure that the product is safe for you to take and does not conflict with your other medications or medical conditions.

  1. When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention If a sunburn is severe – especially if symptoms do not improve after a few days or seem to be getting worse. Warning signs include blistering over a large area, swelling, or signs of infection such as pus, oozing blisters, or increased redness and warmth.  Get immediate help if there are signs of a heat-related illness, including severe headache, confusion, dizziness, nausea, or fever.  Be extra cautious with babies, young children, and older adults as they are more vulnerable to sunburn and its complications.

Choosing the right sunscreen can feel overwhelming, with so many brands, SPF levels, and other features to consider. If you are unsure which sunscreen is best for your skin type or needs, ask your London Drugs pharmacist or beauty advisor for advice. We’re happy to help you find the best products to keep your skin protected and healthy – this summer and all year long too.

What I Eat Actually In A Day To Control Hair Fall And Boost Hair Growth

Sharing my hair fall control diet thatLet me be real: I started losing so much hair, I could have knit a sweater out of it. My bathroom drain looked like it was plotting against me, and don’t even get me started on the sheer terror of brushing my hair.

Hair fall is the universal heartbreak nobody asked for. And while serums, oils, and salon treatments fight for space on your vanity, the truth is simple, healthy hair starts with your plate. And when I say diet, I don’t mean sad salads and starvation. I mean nourishing hair from within, like a loving, slightly obsessive best friend.

So if you’re dealing with hair fall and wondering if your plate has anything to do with it, spoiler: it does!

Here’s what I actually eat in a day to support stronger, fuller hair, plus the science behind every bite. This, in my opinion, is the chicest way to eat your way to shinier and far more loyal strands.

Why Right Diet Matters For Hair Fall?

Hair is made of keratin, a protein that thrives on amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Without enough protein, iron, zinc, and biotin, your follicles basically go on strike, resulting in breakage, thinning, and that dreaded extra strand count on your pillow. A poor diet may not cause hair loss overnight, but it slowly weakens roots and reduces the growth cycle of hair. Instead of obsessing over expensive products alone, it’s important to fuel your hair from within.

Morning Rituals (7–8 AM)

I start with the least glamorous but most effective trick: soaked fenugreek seeds. A glass of warm water with soaked methi seeds, plus three soaked almonds and one walnut.

Why?

Fenugreek is rich in protein, nicotinic acid, and iron, nutrients that strengthen roots and reduce shedding. It also helps fight dandruff and scalp inflammation. Almonds and walnuts bring in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and biotin, which support new growth.

Breakfast (8:30–9:30 AM)

Depending on my mood, I go for avocado toast with whole grain bread and a boiled egg, or Greek yogurt parfait with berries, flaxseeds, and honey, or oatmeal with chia seeds and almond butter. Eggs provide protein and biotin, avocados bring vitamin E and healthy fats that improve scalp circulation, and chia seeds offer omega-3s that keep follicles strong.

If you don’t like chia, flaxseeds or sunflower seeds work just as well.

On desi mornings, it’s moong dal chilla with mint chutney, vegetable upma loaded with carrots and curry leaves, or simply two boiled eggseach of these is rich in protein, iron, and B-vitamins, the exact nutrients your hair follicles need to stay strong and reduce breakage.

And no matter what, I never skip my cup of tea, it’s the only way I can function.

Mid-morning Snack (11 AM)

This used to be the step I ignored, but it makes such a difference.

On days when I feel hungry or need extra energy, I snack on papaya or guava slices, or a citrus fruit like orange or kiwi. I pair this with a handful of mixed nuts and coconut water.

Vitamin C from fruit boosts iron absorption, nuts add zinc and omega-3s, and coconut water hydrates the scalp. For an extra boost, I sometimes toss pumpkin seeds into a smoothie or just snack on them while going through my to-do list for the day.

Lunch (1–2 PM)

My lunches rotate between Indian and global bowls. Dal with multigrain rotis and palak sabzi, rajma or chole with brown rice, curd with flaxseeds and a cucumber-beetroot salad, or grilled tofu with quinoa and roasted veggies.

Buttermilk is non-negotiable for meit promotes gut health, which is linked to hair health.

The science: protein from tofu, paneer, or fish helps repair hair shafts. Beetroot improves blood flow to the scalp. Yogurt with flaxseeds supports hormonal balance, a hidden factor behind hair fall. And sesame seeds (which I sprinkle into sabzis or chutneys) are calcium bombs that follicles love.

Evening Snack (4:30–5 PM)

I keep this light but nourishing.

Sometimes it’s a green smoothie with spinach, banana, and flaxseeds, other times roasted chickpeas or sprout chaat with lemon. If I’m feeling lazy, it’s simply coconut water or green tea.

Roasted chickpeas give plant protein and zinc, walnuts and almonds add omega-3s, and herbal teas like nettle or green tea are full of antioxidants that protect follicles. Skipping this snack often makes me reach for chips later, which my hair does not approve of.

Dinner (7:30–8 PM)

My dinners are light but balanced.

Spinach with brown rice, or grilled paneer with sauted veggies. Occasionally I’ll have a bowl of sweetcorn soup with quinoa or dal khichdi if I want something comforting.

Low iron is one of the most overlooked causes of hair fall, especially in women. So I make sure spinach, beetroot, and legumes feature heavily in my dinners.

Bedtime Ritual (9:30–10 PM)

Golden milk, also known as haldiwala doodh or turmeric latte, is my nightcap.

Made with almond or cow’s milk, a pinch of turmeric, black pepper, and sometimes ashwagandha powder or a tiny piece of jaggery, this drink reduces inflammation, regulates stress hormones, and helps me sleep. And since stress is the sneakiest cause of hair fall, this ritual is as important as conditioner.

Hair-boosting Super Foods I Add Weekly

  • Spinach, kale, or leafy veegies for iron and vitamin A.
  • Berries or amla for vitamin C.
  • Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and flaxseeds for omega-3s and zinc.
  • Eggs or paneer or tofu for protein and biotin.
  • Lentils for folate and iron.
  • Quinoa, avocado, Greek yogurt, curry leaves, moringa, sesame seeds, and turmeric also make regular appearances. I am allergic to seafood but you should definitely make it an integral part of your hair fall control diet.

Non-negotiables For Healthy Hair

It’s not just about what you eat, it’s also how you live.

  • Hydration is key, so I aim for 8–10 glasses of water daily. Dehydration leads to dry scalp and breakage.
  • Gut health matters too, so I include probiotic-rich foods like curd, kefir, or sauerkraut.
  • I avoid crash diets, because losing weight too fast often leads to hair shedding.
  • Sunshine is important, I try to get at least 15 minutes daily for vitamin D.
  • And of course, 7–8 hours of sleep, because your body heals and repairs itself at night, and that includes your hair follicles.
  • I also try to avoid too much caffeine, since it blocks iron absorption, and limit fried foods, refined sugar, and processed snacks because they cause inflammation and poor nutrient absorption.

My Hair Fall Control Diet Takeaway

Think of this as a hair-healthy passport. Whether your plate has quinoa or khichdi, avocado or amla, the key is balance: protein at every meal, iron plus vitamin C combos for absorption, omega-3s and zinc from nuts and seeds, hydration, and stress control.

Follow this for 30–45 days and watch your strands get shinier, thicker, and far less dramatic about falling out. I’m not saying you need to overhaul your entire kitchen or live off chia pudding to save your hair. But your follicles are hungry little things, and if you feed them right with protein, iron, healthy fats, and vitamins; they’ll reward you with stronger, shinier strands.

You don’t have to follow this exact plan, I don’t eat like this every single day either. But even small changes, like adding an egg here, some nuts there, and cutting back on junk, can make a visible difference. My hair noticed. It finally stopped plotting its escape every time I took a shower.

Make a Holiday Season Savings Plan a Habit – The Wardrobe Stylist

0

According to an annual national survey conducted for the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada), most Canadians have spending goals in mind, but many haven’t thought about how they will stay on budget.

Source

Make Your Savings Plan a Habit

In 2020, Canadians planned to spend an average of $583 on gifts in the holiday season. This was down from $643 in 2019. More than 40% did not set a budget for holiday spending, so sticking to those spending goals could be a challenge. This could also explain why one-in-five respondents anticipate overspending this year and nearly half say they experience added stress during the holidays. This stress may expand this year given the current economic climate that’s forcing many to tighten their belts, despite the return to normal.

With more than half of Canadians living paycheque to paycheque, even small financial miscalculations can have significant consequences. It’s never too late to start planning and monitoring your spending – it can go a long way to providing some peace of mind.

Mail Handwritten Notes

Instead of purchasing and sending holiday cards, send personalized handwritten notes, without you doing any of the work. That’s what Handwrytten allows you to do. It makes handwritten notes easy to send as an email or via mail. Their patented robot is capable of autonomously writing nearly 500 notes a day. It uses custom-designed handwriting robots that hold real pens to write out the notes in the handwriting style of your choice on quality paper.

Pricing starts at $3.25, and postage is billed at cost, with bulk discounts available. They also offer subscriptions if you are looking to send more notes each month for various occasions, such as automatically send birthday cards. You can even add gift cards to handwritten note. They offer cards from  major brands.

Changes to Holiday Travel and Entertainment

In 2020, 62% of those surveyed planned to stay home and spend less than $200 on travel expenses. Much of it was due to travel restrictions. Of course, as things have been easing, this trend has been on the decline. Though with current inflation, it’ll be interesting to see how this will pan out.

Again, 2020 was not heavy on parties as 61% had planned to spend less than $200 on parties and other holiday entertainment. My feeling is we will celebrate after a couple of years of confinement with small scale parties to contain the cost.

In-person vs. Online Shopping

Despite the e-commerce boom, Canadians still rely on in-store shopping. That is something I don’t think will ever get replaced. In 2020, 45% expected to spend more in-store, while 18% planned to do most of their shopping online. Nearly a third of those surveyed considered splitting their spending between in-store and online.

Avoid Holiday Stress

Holiday stress is real. Almost half of Canadians say they have added stress during the holiday season. Here’s list of 5 quick and easy tips for a stress-free holiday. Stick to these simple rules and you’ll be feeling merry, even after the decorations have been put away!

Start Saving Early

No one wants to worry about their finances over the holidays. Avoid financial stress this season by starting NOW and prioritizing a savings plan throughout the year for next season. Only 39% of Canadians save all year for their holiday purchases. Planning for these expensive periods in advance will set you up for financial success all year long.

Create a Budget

Most Canadians admitted to not having a holiday budget. Whether they have a holiday season budget or not, many say they do not plan to overspend this season. Creating a budget doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds. Set spending targets for gifts, travel and entertaining. Write them down and keep track of your spending in your savings plan as you shop.

Tackle Debt All Year Long

The best way to stay on budget and stress-free over the holidays is by paying down debt and sticking to an annual budget. Getting into the habit of tracking spending and paying down debt will ensure everyone can relax and enjoy the festive season to the fullest.

While 29% of those surveyed planned to spend less in 2020 due to the pandemic, when it comes to gifting, Canadians still intend to spend an average of $588 this holiday season. This is slightly higher than the $583 reported in the CPA Canada 2019 Holiday Spending Study. I suspect this trend will carry on with current prices.

Find Those Deals

Savvy shoppers know that finding a good deal is all about research and timing. Take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Shop end of season items now so you don’t have to splurge later. Get on coupon apps like Honey to get the savings directly applied to your online purchase.

Think Outside The Gift Box

Almost half of Canadians plan to give a non-traditional gift. Whether it’s festive food or a caring and thoughtful gesture, thinking outside the box when it comes to gift ideas is a great way to save money. Express your creativity during an expensive time of year. We’re a country of do-it-your-selfers, re-gifters and donors who looks beyond traditional presents. Rather than return unwanted gifts, keep them to re-gift, someone else might enjoy them more than you:

  • homemade (26%)
  • second-hand gifts (13%)
  • charitable donations (18%)
  • promise to do something for someone (13%)

Many Canadians were committed to helping others over the holidays, with roughly 72% planning on making charitable donations. This year many will feel the pinch though I’m hopeful many will keep giving. You can even turn that into a gift!

Donate a gift

The Gift of it

Making your savings plan a habit is key to surviving a financially rough year. Tracking your spending and setting money aside regularly will help ease off the burden. Shopping end of season and major sale events can make difference. Better yet, get creative and donate, DIY, re-gift or shop second-hand. Remember, small savings add up. What are your savings plan ideas?

7 Incredible Antioxidant Serums | 100% PURE

0

Why are antioxidants so good for skin? They inhibit damage, support skin repair and, in some cases, encourage enhanced skin function. This means that antioxidants help to support anti-aging efforts and promote more balanced, happier skin overall.

As we move into the cooler months, our main skin care goal is to offset stress wrought by changing weather conditions. We’re identifying the best serums to keep skin shining bright all the way into the new year. Here’s our list of the top 7 antioxidant serums for the winter season and beyond!

#1: Multi-Vitamin + Antioxidant PM Serum
You probably saw this one coming, right? A holy grail for normal to oily skin types, this potent antioxidant serum packs a serious punch thanks to active ingredients in the formula:

  • Coenzyme Q10 – CoQ10 is a major antioxidant for anti-aging, helping to boost collagen, reduce fine lines, and lighten hyperpigmentation.
  • Retinol – Retinol also helps to stabilize sebum production, minimize breakouts and deliver smoother, more radiant skin through cellular renewal.
  • Niacinamide – This gentle yet powerful antioxidant works to balance oil, smooth pores, and fight signs of UV damage.

#2: Vitamin C Concentrated Boost
Want to make quick work of acne marks, excess oil, or lackluster skin? This potent powdered serum is best for combo, oily, and normal skin types. It delivers a maximum dose of ultra-transformative vitamin C, to slough away dead skin on the surface while improving the appearance of damaged or scarred skin.

#3: Niacinamide Concentrated Boost
For all skin types – but especially beneficial for us oily girls – niacinamide is another antioxidant that maintains skin’s youth by keeping the skin firm and flexible. This dynamo ingredient has it out for dark spots and makes quick work of discoloration. Supporting dramatically improved skin – from large pores and acne scarring all the way to sagging and fine lines – this boost promotes a more stunning complexion with each use.

#4: Green Tea EGCG Concentrate Serum
We love the soothing but potent nature of green tea: one of the main components in this antioxidant serum. Here’s what plants this serum on our top 7 list:

  • Green Tea & EGCG – Together this power-couple fights inflammation, dryness, and puffiness. Fighting sun damage and acne, green tea and EGCG may be one of the most impactful antioxidants for all skin types.
  • Acai – A favorite antioxidant in both our diets and skin regimens, acai helps to restore and nourish the skin. Loaded with nutrients like A, B, C, and E vitamins, acai can boost brightness and support our skin’s collagen production.
  • Hyaluronic Acid – This ultra-hydrating ingredient behaves like an antioxidant, replenishing the skin’s moisture by drawing in 1,000x its weight in hydration.

#5: Vitamin C Serum
Every skin type deserves a little vitamin C, and this sunny serum is the perfect place to start. Great for even sensitive skin types, here’s how a serum like this can transform the skin:

  • Vitamin C – The IT-girl of anti-aging antioxidants, vitamin C gives us all the glow we could ever need. It turns over dead skin cells and reduces discoloration on the surface. Supporting a boost in collagen as well, this namesake ingredient sets the skin up for agelessness.
  • Vitamin E – The key to continually moisturized skin, E vitamin is known to hydrate and repair damaged skin. It fortifies our skin’s protective barrier against the effects of UV damage.
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid – Naturally sourced from yams, beets, and tomatoes, this anti-aging antioxidant makes quick works of fine lines and enlarged pores. It helps to rid our skin of free radicals for a smoother and more radiant complexion.

#6: Mushroom Peptides Firming Serum
This lightweight, fast-absorbing serum is ideal for dry or mature skin types seeking firming and lifting benefits with a botanical twist. Its powerful antioxidant and peptide-rich formula helps to reduce fine lines and support collagen integrity—without synthetic chemicals.

Tremella Mushroom – Also known as the “snow mushroom,” tremella delivers antioxidant protection while binding water to the skin like hyaluronic acid. It plumps and hydrates for a smoother, dewier appearance.

Peptides – Naturally derived from rice and other botanicals, peptides signal the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, resulting in a firmer, more lifted look over time.

Resveratrol – Sourced from grapes, this powerful polyphenol helps reduce oxidative damage and visibly calms redness or inflammation associated with environmental stressors.

This serum is especially beneficial as a daily treatment to firm sagging skin and diminish dullness caused by age-related collagen loss.

#7: Black Tea Grass Jelly Antioxidant Serum
This refreshing gel-serum is ideal for oily, sensitive, or acne-prone skin types. Packed with a cocktail of antioxidant-rich botanicals and calming hydrators, it delivers intense soothing benefits while fighting free radical damage.

Black Tea Extract – Rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, black tea defends against oxidative stress and helps reduce signs of aging such as fine lines and uneven tone.

Grass Jelly (Mesona Chinensis) – A traditional herbal extract known for its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. It calms redness, hydrates deeply, and helps restore the skin’s moisture barrier.

Basil, Sea Buckthorn & Niacinamide – This botanical trio works together to brighten dull skin, reduce blemishes, and even out texture without irritating sensitive skin.

This serum is a top pick for those who want a light, breathable antioxidant treatment that balances oil production and soothes stressed-out skin.

What Makes a Good Antioxidant Serum?

Not all antioxidant serums are created equal. The best ones combine potent antioxidants with delivery systems and complementary ingredients that enhance their performance and stability. For instance, antioxidants like vitamin C can degrade when exposed to air or light, so the packaging and formulation must protect the active compounds to ensure they stay effective on your skin.

Additionally, a well-rounded antioxidant serum should contain hydrating agents, anti-inflammatory botanicals, and skin-repairing nutrients to provide comprehensive care. This synergy helps to not only neutralize free radicals but also improve skin texture, reduce inflammation, and enhance resilience to environmental stress.

When choosing an antioxidant serum, consider your skin’s primary concerns. Is it dullness? Premature aging? Sensitivity or dehydration? Serums that layer antioxidants with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, and barrier-supporting lipids will offer more noticeable, long-lasting results.

Frequently Asked Questions About Antioxidant Serums

1. What do antioxidant serums do for your skin?
Antioxidant serums protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by environmental aggressors like pollution, UV rays, and free radicals. They help prevent premature aging, support collagen production, and brighten the skin by neutralizing the damage that leads to wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity. Many antioxidant serums also contain hydrating and anti-inflammatory ingredients that improve overall skin texture and tone.

2. Which antioxidants are best for anti-aging?
The most effective anti-aging antioxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E, resveratrol, niacinamide, ferulic acid, and CoQ10. These ingredients work by reducing oxidative damage, stimulating collagen, fading hyperpigmentation, and boosting cellular renewal. Using them in combination, or within serums that pair them with hydrating agents like hyaluronic acid or peptides, enhances their efficacy and visible results.

3. Can I use an antioxidant serum with retinol or acids?
Yes, but proceed with caution. Antioxidants can actually support the skin when using stronger actives like retinol or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) by reducing inflammation and improving hydration. However, it’s best to alternate use (e.g., vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night) or choose serums that are specifically formulated to be compatible with other actives to avoid irritation.

4. Should antioxidant serums be used day or night?
Both! In the morning, antioxidant serums—especially those containing vitamin C or green tea—help protect skin from daily environmental stress. In the evening, antioxidant-rich formulas with retinol, peptides, or resveratrol aid in skin repair and recovery. Many antioxidant serums are gentle enough for twice-daily use, but always follow usage directions based on ingredients and skin sensitivity.

5. How long does it take to see results from antioxidant serums?
You may notice hydration and glow within a few days, but visible improvements in fine lines, tone, and texture typically take 4–6 weeks of consistent use. This is because antioxidants work at a cellular level, gradually improving skin health over time. The key is daily use, especially under sunscreen during the day, to protect and strengthen skin’s defenses.

Is This the Best Curation Yet?

I’ve always been a fan of the Best of Dermstore curations, but the new Healthy Skin Edit is on another level. The lineup covers cleansing, treatment, moisture, and protection in a way that actually makes sense. It also spotlights some of the strongest formulas in antioxidants, growth factors, peptides, and microexfoliants.

If I’m being honest, adding an eye cream would make this set flawless, but that’s truly my only gripe. The brand selection is phenomenal. And if you use my affiliate code OMGBART at checkout, you can have The Healthy Skin Edit on its way for $165.75. Considering the total value is $730, the savings are wild. More below.

What’s in The Healthy Skin Edit

SkinMedica AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser

A foaming gel that smooths texture and prevents congestion. The blend of fruit and sugar-derived alpha hydroxy acids plus salicylic acid helps lift away buildup and keeps skin soft and balanced. FYI: You’re likely receiving the previous packaging. (full-size 6 oz/180ml, $48 value)

SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF

My favorite vitamin C serum from SkinCeuticals, and one that warranted its own dedicated post. It’s brilliant if CE Ferulic feels too rich. Combination and breakout-prone skin types will love it. Lightweight texture, serious results. (full-size 30ml, $185 value)

Medik8 Clarity Peptides

Medik8 does peptides exceptionally well (and retinol even better). This peptide-niacinamide-zinc blend aims to firm while refining and clarifying uneven skin. It layers beautifully under sunscreen. (full-size 30ml, $54 value)

iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+

People often ask how this compares to Silymarin CF. The textures are similar but the benefits are slightly different. Alternate them if you pick up this edit. Pro-Heal brightens, soothes inflammation, and tightens the look of the skin. Safe for all skin types including rosacea and acne. (deluxe-size 15ml, $99 value)

Bioeffect EGF Serum

A silky, ultra-concentrated treatment powered by barley-derived growth factors that encourage the skin to shift into repair and firmness mode. It’s one of those formulas that actually lives up to the hype. The bottle looks tiny but you only need three drops per application. (full-size 15ml, $175 value)

Allies of Skin Advanced Firming Daily Treatment

If Allies of Skin overwhelms you (serum fatigue is real), go with this hero. Lightweight and creamy, it suits all skin types. It’s my preferred night treatment in warmer months when I crave fewer retinoids and more nourishment. Intensely hydrating. (full-size 50ml, $125 value)

EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46

I’m quietly thrilled this is the untinted version because that formula remains the superior one. UV Clear SPF 46 is still one of EltaMD’s best sunscreens. The hybrid filters and oil-free texture make it a favorite for anyone who wants an airy feel with a glowy (not greasy) finish. (full-size 50ml, $45 value)

Lastly…

The Healthy Skin Edit arrives in a branded Dermstore zip pouch. I’ve collected many versions over the years and the quality holds up. Some remain my most-used travel bags. The Best At-Home Fitness Tools for GLP-1 Users

0

GLP-1 weight loss can be dramatic and quick, and a suddenly slimmer figure may lead to cosmetic concerns, such as skin laxity, and health concerns, such as muscle loss. This “Ozempic effect” has led to a surge in skin-tightening and body-sculpting procedures, but a crucial part of a successful GLP-1 weight loss journey is building muscle back. “Muscle is what keeps your metabolism resilient, supports long-term weight maintenance and helps you move and feel strong in daily life,” explains fitness entrepreneur and NSCA-certified trainer Megan Davies.

Ahead, we speak with Davies about how GLP-1 users should approach their fitness goals, the most effective exercises to try, how to set a realistic workout schedule and the at-home equipment that’s actually worth having.

Fitness Goals to Keep in Mind

“Whether weight loss comes from diet, surgery or medications like GLP-1s, it’s normal for a portion of that loss to include some muscle,” says Davies. “What’s important is that the higher percentages of muscle loss reported with GLP-1 use can be significantly reduced when key lifestyle factors are in place. Regular movement, consistent strength training and a nutrient-dense, protein-forward diet all help protect your muscle mass during weight loss.”

In short, strength training is key to maintaining and building muscle—even for non-GLP-1 users, especially as we age. “Strength-focused training isn’t just important while on these medications; it’s the foundation that allows the mind and body to thrive as we age. This should be a part of self-care, no matter what.”

The Best Exercises

So what exactly are strength-training exercises? “Think squats, lunges, deadlifts, hip hinge variations, rows, presses and carries,” says Davies. “These movements offer the greatest return on effort because they recruit multiple muscles at once and help rebuild or maintain the muscle that may be lost during weight loss.”

But don’t give up your cardio just yet. “In addition to strength work, incorporating walking, low-intensity cardio and occasional short high-intensity sessions can support cardiovascular health,” Davies advises. “The goal is to view your training as a well-rounded approach to overall well-being, not just a strategy for weight loss.”

An Effective Fitness Schedule, Explained

As anyone who has made a fitness-focused New Year’s resolution knows, setting goals is easier than sticking to them. “Frequency really depends on your starting point and your experience with exercise,” Davies says. “For beginners or anyone returning after a long break, a realistic and effective place to start is two full-body strength sessions per week, paired with one low-impact, low-intensity cardio session and a dedicated mobility day. It also helps to be more active throughout the day: take short walks, break up long periods of sitting and look for simple ways to move more. This creates a solid foundation without overwhelming a body that is adjusting to both the medication and new movement patterns.”

As you ease into this new routine and your strength improves, Davies recommends increasing workout volume and intensity to eventually As your ease into this new routine and your strength improves, Davies recommends increasing workout volume and intensity to eventually build up to at least three strength sessions per week, along with two to three cardio sessions that include a mix of low and higher intensities. “Personally, I like including one short high-intensity cardio session, around 20 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of mobility so I can check both boxes in a single workout.”

“There are many ways to structure an effective routine, so take an honest look at your schedule and preferences and experiment until you find a rhythm that feels sustainable,” she says. “Consistency, not perfection, is what ultimately drives progress.”

The Best At-Home Exercise Tools

Repeat after me: You do not need an expensive gym membership or a boutique studio to make a workout effective. “One of the biggest misconceptions in fitness is that you need heavy weights or a full home gym to build muscle. You can start with very basic equipment and still make meaningful progress,” Davies notes. “Even bodyweight alone can be an effective starting point.”

Whether you opt for lighter weights with higher reps or heavier weights with lower reps, a pair of dumbbells is a great place to begin. (Davies recommends one moderate and one heavier pair, plus a comfortable mat.) “As your body adapts and those weights begin to feel easier, you can gradually add heavier options.”

“Additional tools that add versatility without taking up space include a sturdy bench or step, long resistance bands, small resistance loops, sliders and ankle weights. A variety of equipment not only expands what you can do, but it also keeps your workouts engaging. And that matters, because training is a lifelong practice—and enjoyment is what keeps you coming back.”

Glisten & Glow Summer Livin’ Swatches

Press Sample

Summer is upon us – especially here in Las Vegas, where temperatures are blazing well past 100° – in fact, they’re set to reach 113° tomorrow! What goes perfectly with summer? NEONS! They’re the perfect summer polish – they even manage to make ghostly pale girls like me look much tanner than we actually are! For this year’s summer collection, Jill came up with some killer neons- they’re fairly opaque, are hella bright even without a white base, and even stamp! Read on to see swatches of this new collection from Glisten & Glow!

Watermelon & Waterslides

Bright neon pink

What’s more refreshing than cold watermelon on a hot summer day? This bright pink screams summer!

Opacity scale (1-5): 2.5

Finish: Creme, 2 coats to be opaque

Slushies & Suntans

Bright neon orange

Orange you glad I didn’t say banana? Wait, what? Who knows, I’m just too distracted by this eye-searing orange neon creme to think straight!

Opacity scale (1-5): 2.5

Finish: Creme, 2 coats to be opaque

Flip Flops & Fireworks

Bright neon yellow

Yellows are always a struggle, and while this one is good, it’s still the toughest of the bunch, and requires 3 coats to help disguise a visible nail line. It’s pretty damn bright though, so totally worth it. If you don’t want to do three coats, you can always put a coat of Wedding Gown White underneath it to take care of that pesky VNL and really make that yellow pop!

Opacity scale (1-5): 1.5

Finish: Creme, 3 coats to be opaque

BBQs & Board Games

Bright neon green

Like liquid lime popsicles melting over your nails, this bright neon green is summer minus the popsicle sticks.

Opacity scale (1-5): 2.5

Finish: Creme, 2 coats to be opaque

Roadtrips & Rollercoasters

Bright neon purple

This one is a little hard to describe, but it is by far the most opaque of the bunch! It’s not quite purple, and not fully a pink either, so it lies somewhere in limbo between them in all its neon glory. I’m surprised to admit it, but I think it’s my favorite of the bunch, and perfect for nail art!

Opacity scale (1-5): 3

Finish: Creme, 2 coats to be opaque

CeraVe vs. Cetaphil Moisturizers for Sensitive Skin

0

Among the plethora of skincare brands on the market, CeraVe and Cetaphil stand out as saviors for dry, damaged, and sensitive skin by offering gentle formulations to help restore and maintain skin health.

Additionally, CeraVe and Cetaphil are both popular choices among dermatologists, primarily due to their use of moisture-attracting humectants, skin-softening emollients, and barrier-repairing ceramides.

However, while both brands share similar features, how do you choose between them to repair and protect your sensitive and reactive skin?

In this article, I will review the philosophies, ingredients, and overall effectiveness of CeraVe vs. Cetaphil moisturizers to help you decide on which one you should use to soothe sensitive skin.

Understanding Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can be both a skin type and a condition that causes the skin to react more intensely to stimuli than normal skin, often leading to symptoms such as redness, itching, and dryness.

Sensitive skin can be caused by internal and external factors, including genetics, allergies, and environmental irritants.

However, sensitive skin is most commonly caused by irritants in cosmetics, such as fragrances, alcohol, and certain preservatives.

As a result, it is crucial to choose skincare products that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin to avoid exacerbating symptoms and discomfort.

CeraVe: Brand Overview and Philosophy

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, a hydrating skincare product with ceramides to nourish and moisturize dry skin effectively.

Founded in 2005 with a mission to restore and maintain the skin barrier, CeraVe is a brand that has become synonymous with skincare innovation.

The brand emphasizes its proprietary blend of ceramides, which are crucial lipids that help restore the skin’s barrier, along with other key ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.

CeraVe’s products are free from fragrance and drying alcohol, making them a popular choice for those with sensitive skin.

CeraVe Moisturizers for Sensitive Skin

CeraVe’s range for sensitive skin includes the Daily Moisturizing Lotion, Moisturizing Cream, and PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, all rich in ceramides, fatty alcohols, and hyaluronic acid.

These ingredients are essential for repairing the skin barrier and retaining moisture, making them ideal for sensitive skin prone to dryness and irritation.

The formulations are also non-greasy and absorb quickly, providing comfort without heaviness.

Cetaphil: Brand Overview and Philosophy

Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream is a gentle and nourishing product that provides hydration and restores the skin's moisture balance.

Cetaphil is a skincare brand developed in 1947 in Texas and lauded for its minimalist approach to skin care, prioritizing gentle products formulated with ingredients tailored for sensitive and irritated skin.

The brand’s philosophy centers on simplicity and efficacy, with products often recommended by dermatologists for their mild and non-irritating formulas.

Cetaphil, similarly to CeraVe, also avoids using fragrances and harsh ingredients in their products, and some of the brand’s main ingredients include glycerin, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides to help soothe and hydrate the skin and repair its delicate moisture barrier.

Cetaphil Moisturizers for Sensitive Skin

Cetaphil’s range for sensitive skin includes the Moisturizing Lotion, Intensive Healing Lotion, and Rich Hydrating Cream formulated with glycerin and various emollients to lock in moisture and provide long-lasting hydration for sensitive skin.

However, due to the inclusion of emollients such as avocado and olive oil, some of these products may not be suitable for those with skin prone to clogged pores and acne.

Additionally, they have a heavier texture compared to CeraVe’s moisturizers, making them better suited for drier skin types.

Comparing CeraVe and Cetaphil for Sensitive Skin

When comparing the two, it’s evident that both brands offer high-quality products designed with sensitive skin in mind.

CeraVe’s focus on ceramides and a sustained-release technology might edge out for those needing intensive barrier repair.

Therefore, CeraVe’s products may be more suitable for individuals with dry skin, mature skin prone to dryness, those living in cold climates, and those using drying acne treatments.

On the other hand, Cetaphil’s simplicity and ultra-gentle formulations are perfect for skin that reacts negatively to more complex ingredient lists.

This makes Cetaphil more suitable for sensitive skin prone to irritation, redness, and sensitivity but not so much for skin prone to acne.

Price-wise, both brands are positioned similarly, offering affordable options for everyday use.

Availability is also comparable, with both brands widely accessible in drugstores and online.

Which One Is Best for Sensitive Skin: CeraVe or Cetaphil?

Choosing between CeraVe and Cetaphil for sensitive skin will depend on your specific skin needs, as not every sensitive skin type reacts the same to different products.

However, if your skin craves deep hydration and barrier repair, CeraVe’s ceramide-rich moisturizers might be the answer, while Cetaphil’s gentle moisturizers are a better fit for sensitive skin that’s easily irritated.

Additionally, CeraVe’s formulations might be better suited if your sensitive skin is caused by external factors, such as cold and harsh weather, irritating cosmetic products, or potent active ingredients, such as tretinoin or exfoliating acids.

On the other hand, if your skin is prone to severe dryness, be it genetic or caused by external factors, but is not prone to clogged pores and acne, Cetaphil’s heavier and more emollient-rich moisturizers may provide the necessary relief.

In conclusion, both CeraVe and Cetaphil are excellent options for sensitive skin, offering effective and affordable solutions tailored to different needs.

Whether you need deep hydration and barrier repair or a gentle yet effective moisturizer, both brands have you covered.

It ultimately comes down to finding the right fit for your specific skin concerns and preferences.

However, regardless of choice, patch testing and gradually introducing new products into your skincare routine are advisable to prevent potential reactions.

Frustrated with Your Outfits? How to Finally Find Your Best Colours — Inside Out Style

0

twitterpinterestlinkedinmail

For many women, colour analysis can feel like a never-ending puzzle. You might have been told you’re a “Spring,” only to be re-draped as an “Autumn” later. You try on those palettes, but somehow they still don’t feel right. You look washed out in some hues, overwhelmed by others, and the result is confusion rather than clarity.

So why does this happen? And how can you finally find your best colours to create gorgeous outfits that make you the star without starting over again (and again)?

1. Your Colouring Changes and That’s Normal

As we age, our pigmentation softens. Hair loses intensity, skin cools slightly, and contrast often reduces. What once felt warm and vibrant may now look too strong or too yellow.

If you were once a vivid redhead, your current ivory-toned hair will change how colours appear against your face. You might still suit warmthbut now you’ll need softer, more muted versions of those shades.

For example:

  • Swap bright coral for soft coral
  • Replace golden yellow with warm blush pink.
  • Trade orange-red for soft terracotta or rosewood.

Your undertone – warm or cool doesn’t necessarily flip (though some warm people do cool down with age). However, the intensity and value of your colours often require adjustment.

Your hair colour may have changed over time, whether with hair dye or just natural greying, this means that the colours and in particular, the neutrals that suit you now will have changed.  Plus, how you put your colours together will also change. It’s worth reassessing your colouring every 5-10 years or anytime your hair colour changes (or if you’re just not feeling as good in your palette as you used to).  You can get an online colour analysis here.

2. You Don’t Have to Wear Every Colour in Your Palette

One of the biggest misconceptions about colour analysis is that you must wear every shade in your palette. Not true. Every person’s palette has colours that enhance and others that are just “okay”.

Even within a harmonious group, you’ll have personal signature colours that make your skin glow and your eyes light up. Those are your true allies.

For instance:

  • Warm individuals might find orange overpowering but glow in soft salmon or coral pink.
  • Cool individuals may struggle with icy pastels yet shine in mid-tones like raspberry or teal.

The joy of getting your signature colours as part of your colour analysis is that you will find out which are your very best colours from a generic palette, so you can adjust your wardrobe to suit who you are today.

Think of your palette as a menunot a prescription – you get to choose what works best for your unique features.

3. Understanding the Three Dimensions of Colour

Once you understand how undertone, intensity and value work together, you’ll see why specific colours feel more natural.

  • Undertone – Is the colour yellow-based (warm) or blue-based (cool)?
  • Value – Is it light, medium or dark?
  • Intensity – Is it bright or muted (greyed and smoky)?

Many people go wrong by focusing on only one. For example, someone may soften their colours (lower intensity) but accidentally shift them too cool. This can lead to a palette that feels dull or draining.  Or you may keep your correct undertone but be wearing colours that are now too dark for you as your hair has gotten lighter with age, so they feel heavy on you.

If your features are soft but still have a hint of warmth, you need muted warm tones, not icy cool ones.

Plus, your colour contrast or value contrast may have changed, so how you put the colours in your palette together may need to change, even if your palette is still the same.  Check out my free 3-step process to understanding your contrast levels.

colours and ageing4. Focus on How Colours Make You FeelNot Just How They Look

The right colours don’t just flatter your skin – they support your confidence.
If you feel uneasy in a hue, trust that instinct. When a colour makes you feel tired or self-conscious, it’s not your best match, no matter what a label says.

Here’s a simple experiment:

  1. Stand near a window with natural light.
  2. Hold two garments near your face – one warm and one cool.  I find green to be a great tool for this – one a warm olive green, the other a cool emerald green.
  3. Watch for differences in skin tone, eyes, and expression.

If your skin looks fresher, your eyes brighter, and you feel uplifted, that’s your colour working with you.

5. The Role of Expert Guidance

Colour analysis is a skill built on trained observation, and it’s easy to get confused by DIY methods or inconsistent systems online. If you’ve been re-draped multiple times, it doesn’t mean you’re “hard to classify.” It simply means your colouring is nuanced. It could also mean that the system you’ve had a colour analysis in is lacking in nuance (which is why I developed my 18 palette Absolute Colour System).

An experienced colour consultant will look beyond labels and work with the subtleties of your features – hair sheen, skin undertone, and eye clarity – to pinpoint your ideal balance.

If you’re ready to truly understand your palette and stop second-guessing yourself, my 7 Steps to Style program will guide you through every part of the process from discovering your personal colouring to creating a wardrobe that works harmoniously for you.

6. Embrace Evolution – Not Perfection

Colour isn’t fixed. Just like your personality, it grows, shifts, and refines over time. The goal isn’t to chase one definitive “season” but to understand your current expression of colour harmony.

When you align your wardrobe with your natural colouring, you don’t just look better, you feel more authentic, confident, and at ease in your own skin.

If you’re frustrated with your colour analysis, it’s not failure – it’s feedback. You’re evolving, and so is your palette. Understanding warmth, depth, and chroma will help you interpret colour with confidence instead of confusion. And when you’re ready for expert clarity, you’ll discover your colours aren’t lost – they’ve simply grown up with you.
