Using Vitamin C and Retinol Together: Guide

0

In the world of skincare, two superstar ingredients are always stealing the spotlight: Vitamin C and retinol. These are two of the most well known ingredients in skincare, especially when it comes to anti-aging and skin brightening.

The question is: can these two powerhouse ingredients be used together? In this article we will explore the ins and outs of vitamin C and retinol, from their benefits, to how they function together, to how to create a personalized skincare routine that includes both.

Why Do Vitamin C and Retinol Matter for Your Skin?

Both vitamin C and retinol play important roles in maintaining healthy, youthful, glowing skin. Vitamin C is known for its antioxidant properties and ability to brighten skin tone, while retinol is celebrated for its anti-aging benefits and skin renewal capabilities.

To elevate your skincare game, instate a solid skincare routine that incorporates these two ingredients: vitamin C in the mornings, and retinol in the evenings. Let’s get to know these ingredients a little better, and learn more about what they can do for your skin.

What To Know About Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from damaging free radicals caused by UV exposure and pollution. It’s also essential for boosting collagen production, which helps to maintain skin firmness and elasticity.

Some of the key benefits of vitamin C in skincare include:

  • Brightening Skin Tone: This is vitamin C’s bread and butter. It’s known for reducing pigmentation and evening out skin tone. The result is a beautiful, natural glow.
  • Supporting Collagen Production: This important vitamin supports collagen synthesis, reducing fine lines and wrinkles while plumping skin.
  • Antioxidant Defense: Supports skin during exposure to oxidative stress, working to reduce the look of visible premature aging.

What To Know About Retinol

Retinol has earned its reputation as the gold standard in anti-aging skincare due to its remarkable ability to address multiple signs of aging. This vitamin A derivative is renowned for its effectiveness in reducing fine lines and wrinkles and improving overall skin texture.

Retinol works by penetrating deep into the skin’s middle layer, the dermis, where it changes your skin at a cellular level, neutralizing free radicals and boosting the production of collagen and elastin.

This creates the much-desired plumping effects that many of us are looking for. Not only does it improve the appearance of wrinkles, but it also helps to reduce enlarged pores. As if that’s not already enough, retinol has an exfoliating effect on the skin, which improves its tone and texture.

Why Do Vitamin C and Retinol Work Well Together?

When used together, retinol and vitamin C make powerful partners! Both ingredients target slightly different aspects of skin health, complementing each other’s effects for an ultra-effective product pairing and more comprehensive results.

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that protects the skin from free radical damage and helps brighten your complexion for a gorgeous glow. Retinol on the other hand, stimulates cell turnover and collagen production.

When combined, they work synergistically to address the signs of aging:

  • While both products can help support collagen production, when combined the effect is simply more potent.
  • Vitamin C defends skin cell health during exposure to the damaging effects of free radicals, while retinol works to repair existing damage.
  • Retinol supports cell turnover while vitamin C helps form new, healthy skin cells.
  • Vitamin C has been known to stabilize retinol, potentially increasing its effectiveness by helping it to absorb more effectively.

The best part is that all of this is perfectly safe. There are different ways to incorporate vitamin C and retinol into your skincare regimen, and we will share our thoughts on the best way to do it.

How To Incorporate Vitamin C and Retinol Into Your Skincare Routine

To maximize the benefits of each ingredient, we recommend using vitamin C in the morning, and retinol at night. This approach allows you to reap all the benefits of each ingredient, without interfering with the efficacy of the other.

Application Order and Timing Tips

In the morning, after cleansing, apply a vitamin C serum that meets your skincare needs. Follow this with a moisturizer that’s suitable for your skin type. If your moisturizer doesn’t contain at least 30 SPF, slather on some sunscreen.

In the evening, cleanse your skin thoroughly to remove any makeup and built-up debris from the day. Apply your retinol and a rich night cream. When it comes to retinol, your best bet is to start off by using it every other day, or even just a couple times a week, until your skin adjusts to the new product.

You may want to do that with vitamin C as well, but that ingredient is typically a bit gentler than retinol. It depends on your skin type, and sensitive skin may need to be handled with kid gloves, regardless of ingredient combination.

Addressing Sensitivity Concerns

Both vitamin C and retinol can potentially cause skin sensitivity, especially when first introduced. Don’t worry — this is completely normal. To minimize irritation, it’s best to start with products that have a lower concentration of the ingredients.

What does that mean? Well, you might find a serum that boasts more than 20% vitamin C might be extremely effective for those who are used to the ingredient, but may cause redness and irritation for someone with sensitive skin, or someone who is new to the ingredient.

For vitamin C, any concentration that is 10% or below is a great place to start. For retinol, a low concentration in serum is typically between .01% and .03%. This of course does not mean that you can’t use a higher concentration; you might just need to exercise a little trial and error to find what’s best for your individual skin needs.

WHY MEN LOSE MORE HAIR DURING SUMMER TIME ~ THE MALE GROOMING REVIEW

0

Most men understand the importance of sunscreen when heading outdoors, but hair protection? That’s often an afterthought—if it’s thought of at all.

Whether you’re working outside, hitting the beach, going for a run, or just enjoying a cold beer on the patio, your hair is constantly exposed to the elements. And while sunlight has its benefits—like helping your body produce Vitamin D—too much of it can silently sabotage your hair.

In this article, we’ll break down exactly how sun exposure affects men’s hair health, the signs of damage, who’s most at risk, and how to protect your hair without complicating your daily routine.

What the Sun Does to Your Hair

Your hair is made up of keratin, a tough protein. Each strand has a protective outer layer called the cuticle. Think of it like shingles on a roof—when it’s intact, everything inside is protected. But when exposed to UV rays, that layer can break down.

Here’s what happens:

  • UVA rays penetrate deep into the hair shaft, damaging proteins and reducing strength.

  • UVB rays affect the outer layer, degrading pigments and drying out the surface.

And here’s the kicker: your hair doesn’t heal. Once the strand is damaged, it’s damaged for good until you cut it off.

Signs Your Hair Is Getting Hit by UV Damage

You might not notice it after a single day in the sun, but repeated exposure will start showing up—especially in the warmer months. Common signs include:

1. Dry, Rough Texture

Sun exposure saps natural oils from both your scalp and hair, making it feel brittle, dry, and harder to style.

2. Color Fading

Blondes may go blonder, but brunettes might notice a reddish or brassy tint creeping in. Natural or dyed, UV rays break down hair pigments over time.

3. Split Ends and Breakage

Sun-weakened hair becomes fragile, leading to split ends and mid-strand breakage—especially if you’re also using heat tools or wearing hats all day.

4. Thinning Appearance

UV damage weakens the integrity of individual hairs. Even if your hair isn’t falling out, it may start to look thinner and lose its body.

5. Scalp Sunburn

Bald spots or thinning areas on your scalp can burn just like skin elsewhere on your body. A sunburned scalp can lead to peeling, itching, and even temporary hair shedding.

Who’s More Vulnerable?

While all men are at risk, some are more likely to see sun-related hair issues:

  • Guys with lighter hair: Blonde and red hair have less melanin, which provides natural UV protection.

  • Men with thinning or receding hairlines: Less hair coverage means more scalp exposure.

  • Those who work or play outdoors: Construction workers, athletes, hikers, and beachgoers get more UV exposure overall.

  • Men with dyed or chemically treated hair: Color or bleach weakens the hair shaft, making it more vulnerable to sun damage.

Why Men Often Overlook It

Let’s be honest: most guys don’t have a 10-step haircare routine. For many, it’s shampoo, maybe conditioner, and that’s it. Haircare tends to fall low on the priority list—until the damage is done.

But ignoring sun damage doesn’t make it go away. In fact, left unchecked, it can speed up hair aging, breakage, and even contribute to a more noticeable balding appearance.

How to Protect Your Hair Without the Fuss

Good news: protecting your hair from the sun doesn’t mean spending half an hour in front of the mirror. Here are simple, low-maintenance ways to keep your hair in solid shape—even during peak summer:

1. Wear a Hat

The easiest and most effective move. Baseball cap, bucket hat, or wide-brimmed hat—whatever fits your style. It protects both your hair and your scalp.

Bonus tip: Avoid tight hats all day every day—they can cause friction or cut off circulation to hair follicles over time.

2. Use a Leave-In Conditioner or Hair Cream with UV Protection

Yes, men’s hair products exist that protect against UV rays. Look for leave-in conditioners or light creams labeled with UV protection or antioxidants.

No need to overdo it—just apply a small amount to damp hair before heading out.

3. Shampoo Less, Condition More

Daily shampooing strips away natural oils. Unless you’re working out or sweating heavily every day, try cutting back to 2–3 shampoos a week.

Instead, rinse with water and use a good conditioner regularly. It helps restore moisture and strengthen hair that’s taken a hit from the sun.

4. Use a Moisturizing Mask Once a Week

This sounds more “salon” than “garage,” but hear us out: hair masks are like protein shakes for your hair. It’s a 10-minute step, once a week, that can make a noticeable difference in texture and resilience.

Look for masks with ingredients like argan oil, keratin, or aloe vera.

5. Rinse After Swimming

Chlorine and saltwater dry out your hair and make it even more prone to sun damage. Always rinse with fresh water after a swim, and follow up with conditioner.

6. Eat for Strong Hair

Hair health isn’t just about what you put on it—what you eat matters too. Protein, omega-3s, iron, and vitamins like D, E, and biotin all play a role in hair growth and strength.

Think eggs, nuts, salmon, leafy greens, and whole grains.

What If You’re Already Seeing Damage?

Don’t panic. While you can’t undo existing damage to the strands, you can stop things from getting worse and give your hair a reset.

  • Get a trim: Cut off split ends and start fresh.

  • Upgrade your shampoo: Use one designed for dry or damaged hair.

  • Start conditioning: Even if you never did before, it’s never too late to begin.

  • Protect going forward: A little prevention now will save you from major damage later.

Final Thoughts

Sun exposure affects more than just your skin—it can weaken your hair, dry it out, fade its color, and even contribute to thinning. But with a few easy habits, you can protect your hair without overhauling your routine.

Whether you’re bald, buzzed, bearded, or rocking a full mane, your hair and scalp deserve attention. So next time you step out into the sun, don’t just think SPF—think about your hair, too.

Take care of it, and it’ll keep you looking sharp for the long haul.

What is Squalane? Skin Benefits and More

0

Everyone wants glowing, healthy-looking skin, and creating a skincare routine unique to our skin’s needs is the best way to achieve that goal. One ingredient that can elevate your daily regimen is squalane, an ingredient used in moisturizers, serums, and even repair treatments to provide many skin benefits.

But what is squalaneand what does it do for your skin? If you’re interested in learning more about this skin-benefiting oil, our Skin Health Experts at Kate Somerville are here to help you better understand this super hydrating ingredient and how you can incorporate it into your skincare regimen. Rejuvenate your skin with a squalane-infused skincare products.

What Is Squalane?

Though squalane may be a new term to you, your skin is already up-to-date on the benefits of this ingredient—in fact, it produces it naturally! Before delving into squalane skin benefitsit’s essential to understand the science behind this remarkable ingredient.

The Science Behind Squalane

What is squalane all about? Squalane is derived from squalene, a natural compound produced by our skin’s sebaceous glands.1 While squalene is highly beneficial, it’s prone to oxidation, making it less suitable for skincare products. To overcome this challenge, squalene is hydrogenated, turning it into a more stable and skin-friendly squalane. This transformation ensures that squalane can provide long-lasting benefits to your skin without the risk of oxidation.

When added to skincare ingredients, squalene oil, better known as squalane, directly contributes to healthy-looking skin. Squalane helps to reinforce the skin barrier’s function by mimicking the skin’s natural oils, preventing moisture loss and keeping harmful external irritants at bay. Daily application of squalane offers all kinds of benefits ranging from anti-aging to moisturization.

Unveiling the Benefits of Squalane for Skin Health

What does squalane do for the skin? Now that you know the science behind squalane, the skincare-ready version of squalene, let’s take a look at the health benefits of this natural product.

Anti-Aging and Wrinkle Reduction

Anti-aging products are key to keeping your skin healthy and keeping you confident. Working with peptides in age repair, squalane provides your skin with a more youthful look by smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, softening dark circles, and softening the texture of your skin. Using squalane regularly also helps minimize the formation of new wrinkles, causing your skin to look and feel better than ever. With consistent use, squalane can aid in maintaining a radiant and age-defying appearance.

Encouraging Collagen Production

Collagen, a protein that provides structure to your skin, is essential for maintaining its firmness and elasticity. As we age, collagen production naturally decreases, leading to sagging skin and the formation of wrinkles. Squalane can assist in combating this process. It encourages the production of collagen, helping to improve skin’s elasticity and suppleness. This makes squalane a valuable ally in the fight against signs of aging, ensuring that your skin remains youthful and resilient.

Intense Hydration for a Supple Complexion

While squalane is lightweight, it holds just the right amount of moisturization to leave your skin supple, hydrated, and glowing. In addition, because it is so similar to squalene, a naturally produced oil, it works with your skin’s natural protective barrier and shields it from harmful, external irritants.

If your skin is dehydratedthe skin’s sebum formation is high, causing oily skin and clogged pores. Hydration products will protect the skin barrier and moisturizing it will give your skin a healthy glow. If you’re considering adding a new moisturizer to your routine and are looking at different types of moisturizersour Skin Health Experts recommend a moisturizer with squalane because it effectively hydrates the skin.

Calming Effects for Skin Irritation

One of the many benefits of squalane oil is that it offers soothing qualities. If you experience redness, dry or flaky skin, acne, or skin sensitivity, applying squalane regularly can help minimize and alleviate irritation. For optimal results, use Squalane in both your AM and PM skincare routines.

If you experience redness or are looking to treat a skin condition, squalane can provide relief and help reduce the appearance of these issues. Its gentle nature makes it suitable for daily use, providing consistent support for irritative skin.

Balancing Oil Production Effectively

Squalane is a hydrogenated version of squalene—an oil that your skin naturally produces. Because squalane mimics squalene oil, your skin recognizes it, and when applied regularly, it will begin to adjust its oil production to only produce what is needed. Over time, your skin will produce less oil on its own, making it an excellent option for those struggling with oily skin.

Enhancing Skin Tone and Texture

Squalane contains powerful antioxidants, which offer many benefits, including evening out your skin tone by fading dark spots and scars. Antioxidants play a crucial role in neutralizing free radicals, which can damage skin cells and accelerate the aging process. By incorporating squalane into your skincare routine, you can harness the power of these antioxidants to protect your skin from environmental stressors and maintain a more youthful appearance.

Squalane’s moisturizing properties also help improve skin elasticity, further contributing to a youthful and rejuvenated complexion. Creams and serums containing squalane can promote a more even and radiant skin tone by reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation and blemishes. Add this skin care for texture and pores for glowing, even, and smooth skin.

Treating Sensitive Skin with Soothing Rejuvenation

Squalane oil is one of the most gentle moisturizing ingredients on the market, making it a great choice among sensitive skin products. Its delicate, soothing effects and anti-inflammatory properties help minimize the appearance of visible redness and irritation. Not only does this boost the appearance of your skin, but it can also alleviate any discomfort caused by irritation.

Many heavy moisturizers carry the unfortunate reputation of clogging pores and leading to acne. Lightweight in nature, squalane holds powerful moisturizing benefits and is considered non-comedogenic, making it an excellent choice for all skin types.

Using Squalane in Your Skincare Routine

Incorporating squalane into your skincare routine can be a transformative step towards healthier and more radiant skin. To maximize its benefits, it’s essential to follow a structured regimen. Here’s a detailed guide on how to integrate squalane effectively:

Step 1: Cleansing

Begin your skincare routine by thoroughly cleansing and toning your skin. Cleansing is crucial as it helps remove impurities, excess oil, and makeup residues that might hinder the absorption of squalane. A clean canvas allows squalane to penetrate deeply and work its magic.

Step 2: Exfoliation

If you have an exfoliation product as part of your skincare routine, apply it after cleansing. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, promoting skin renewal and allowing squalane to penetrate even more effectively. However, it’s essential to use exfoliation products sparingly, as over-exfoliation can irritate the skin.

Step 3: Squalane Application

Next, apply your squalane-based hydration product. Squalane can be found in various forms, such as serums, oils, or creams. Choose a beauty product that suits your skin type and concerns. Gently massage the squalane into your skin, focusing on areas prone to dryness or fine lines. Squalane’s lightweight texture ensures quick absorption without leaving a greasy residue.

Step 4: Additional Treatments and Serums

Depending on your skincare goals, you may use other treatments or serums in this step. For example, vitamin C serums can brighten your complexion, while age repair systems can help you turn back the clock. The key is to apply these products after squalane to benefit from its hydrating and protective properties as a base.

Step 5: Moisturizing

After applying treatments and serums, seal everything in with your preferred facial moisturizer. Squalane works synergistically with moisturizers, enhancing their hydrating effects. It helps lock in moisture, ensuring your skin remains supple and plump throughout the day or night.

Step 6: Sunscreen (Morning Routine)

If you’re applying squalane in your morning skincare routine, it’s crucial to finish with sunscreen. Sunscreen provides essential protection against harmful UV rays, preventing premature aging and maintaining the results of your skincare regimen. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF rating suitable for your skin type and daily activities.

By following these steps and incorporating squalane into your skincare routine, you can experience the full spectrum of benefits this versatile ingredient offers.

Top Squalane-Infused Products for Optimal Skin Health

To keep your skincare routine minimal, choose a product that combines more than one ingredient. To target specific concerns, opt for a squalane serum. These concentrated formulas deliver a potent dose of squalane to your skin, allowing for more intensive hydration and wrinkle reduction. Kate Somerville’s revolutionary stem cell face serum is an effective skin replenisher that moisturizes and repairs the skin barrier, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, and supports a healthy skin microbiome.

While squalane itself offers numerous benefits, combining it with other complementary ingredients can enhance its effectiveness. Our Kx Concentrates Squalane + HA is an excellent way to reap the benefits of squalane and hyaluronic acid together without adding too many extra steps to your routine.

Squalane: The Skincare Secret Ready To Replenish Your Skin

Incorporating squalane oil into your skincare routine can be a game-changer for achieving healthier, more youthful-looking skin. Its versatile benefits, including moisturization, anti-aging properties, and soothing effects, make it a valuable addition to any regimen. As a universal skincare ingredient, it complements any skin type, from acne-prone to dry skin.

Whether you’re combatting signs of aging, seeking relief for sensitive skin, or simply aiming for a radiant complexion, squalane has you covered. So, embrace this skincare secret, and let squalane work its magic, helping you achieve the skin you’ve always desired.

Lanolin Cream Benefits for Dry Skin

0

Dry skin is a common ailment that affects millions worldwide, leading to discomfort and a quest for effective remedies.

Amidst a plethora of skincare options, lanolin cream emerges as a natural and potent solution.

However, can lanolin give your dry skin the relief it craves?

In this article, I will discuss the potential benefits of lanolin cream for dry skin, as well as some side effects associated with this ingredient, and how to use it correctly for best results and no adverse outcomes.

What is Lanolin?

Lanolin is a natural substance derived from sheep’s wool.

It is harvested through a purification process after the wool is shorn, ensuring the animal is not harmed.

Like humans, sheep produce natural oils to keep their skin and wool moisturized so that growing it isn’t painful and their skin isn’t susceptible to infection.

Once the wool is shorn, the lanolin is extracted from it and purified before being used in various products, including cosmetics and skincare.

In skincare products, lanolin is prized for its ability to mimic the skin’s own oils, offering intense moisturization and aiding in the repair of dry or damaged skin.

Its versatile nature makes it a valuable ingredient in a wide range of products, from lotions and lip balms to ointments and makeup.

Benefits of Lanolin Cream for Dry Skin

Rich in lipids that closely mimic those found in human skin, lanolin’s unique composition allows it to offer unparalleled moisturizing properties that can be beneficial for dry skin.

Prevents Skin Dryness

Lanolin forms an occlusive barrier on the skin’s surface, which is key in preventing dryness.

This barrier not only protects the skin from external environmental factors that can strip moisture away but also locks in moisture from deeper layers of the skin and prevents it from evaporating through the skin’s surface.

By preventing moisture from evaporating, lanolin helps to maintain the skin’s natural hydration levels, keeping it soft, supple, and moisturized.

This unique ability to mimic and reinforce the skin’s own moisture barrier makes lanolin an effective remedy for dry and parched skin.

Softens Rough Skin

Lanolin’s emollient properties play a significant role in softening rough and textured skin.

Upon application, lanolin forms a layer on the skin’s surface, which smooths out rough patches and calluses, which are growths of thickened skin caused by repeated pressure or friction.

The result is skin that feels softer and more supple, reducing the appearance of dry, cracked patches over time.

Repairs and Protects the Skin Barrier

Beyond preventing moisture from evaporating through the skin’s surface, lanolin also reinforces the skin’s natural lipid barrier, enhancing its ability to retain moisture and protect against environmental aggressors.

A strong, functional skin barrier is crucial for relieving dry, damaged skin, as it provides the resilience it needs to protect itself from external stimuli that can trigger various reactions, such as irritation, redness, and even inflammatory skin conditions if they colonize the skin’s surface.

In this way, lanolin not only helps to alleviate existing dryness but also strengthens the skin’s defenses and prevents future dryness.

Relieves Irritation and Inflammation

Lanolin is generally well tolerated, making it suitable for sensitive skin.

Additionally, due to its emollient properties that soften the skin and protect its barrier from external aggressors, lanolin can help prevent and relieve irritation, redness, and inflammation.

Finally, lanolin can also help soothe inflammation caused by conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis by providing a moisturizing and protective layer over the affected areas.

Versatility in Application

Lanolin is a fantastic and versatile ingredient that can be beneficial not only for dry skin on the face but also for lips, cuticles, elbows, and anywhere else requiring intense moisture and protection.

Furthermore, lanolin is a natural ingredient, which makes it suitable for those who prefer skincare products that contain only natural ingredients.

How to Use Lanolin Cream on Dry Skin?

Step-by-step guide demonstrating the application of Lanolin Cream on dry skin.

Apply to Damp Skin

Applying lanolin cream to damp skin is crucial for maximizing its benefits.

When the skin is moist, lanolin forms an effective barrier that locks in this existing moisture, preventing it from evaporating and leaving the skin dry with a layer of grease on top.

Without moisture present, lanolin cannot perform its primary function of hydration preservation, making this step essential for those seeking to combat dry skin.

Use Sparingly But Regularly

Less is more when using lanolin due to its rich and dense nature.

A small amount can provide significant hydration and protection, and regular application is key to maintaining continuous moisture and barrier support.

Start with a pea-sized amount and adjust based on your skin’s response and needs.

Focus on Problem Areas

While lanolin cream is beneficial for overall skin hydration, concentrating on particularly dry or cracked areas can yield targeted relief.

Elbows, knees, hands, and feet often require extra attention; therefore, focusing on these problem areas ensures they receive the intensive care needed to restore and maintain skin health.

Integrate into Your Nighttime Routine

Incorporating lanolin cream into your nighttime skincare routine allows it to work its magic undisturbed.

The body’s natural repair processes are most active at night, making it an ideal time for the lanolin to deeply penetrate and moisturize the skin.

This uninterrupted period enhances the cream’s efficacy, promoting optimal hydration, softness, and barrier repair by morning.

Pair with Gentle Exfoliation

To enhance the effectiveness of lanolin cream, pair it with gentle exfoliation once or twice a week.

Removing dead skin cells allows for better absorption of the cream, ensuring that the moisturizing and barrier-repairing properties reach deeper skin layers.

Additionally, the buildup of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface can oftentimes be the reason for dryness and rough texture; therefore, exfoliation can help improve overall skin health.

Choose a mild exfoliant to avoid irritation, particularly on very dry or sensitive skin or areas prone to eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea.

Use Over a Hydrating Serum or a Humectant-Based Moisturizer

For an extra boost of hydration, apply lanolin cream over a hydrating serum or a humectant-based moisturizer.

This layering technique leverages the humectants’ ability to draw moisture into the skin while lanolin seals this moisture in, enhancing the overall moisturizing effect.

It’s a powerful combination for dry skin, offering deep hydration and strengthening skin barrier function.

The Side Effects of Lanolin Cream

While lanolin is generally a well-tolerated component, some individuals may experience certain side effects, including:

Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to lanolin, manifesting as redness, itching, or swelling upon application.

Pore Congestion: Though beneficial for dry skin, lanolin can exacerbate issues with pore congestion in those with oily skin types.

Acne: Lanolin’s rich texture can clog pores in acne-prone skin, potentially leading to breakouts.

Excess Oiliness: Similarly, lanolin can leave a greasy layer on the skin’s surface, which will make it look and feel oily.

Dryness: When used incorrectly, lanolin won’t help dry skin but can exacerbate it. Make sure to apply it to damp skin or over a humectant-based serum or moisturizer for best results.

Contact Dermatitis: In rare cases, individuals with sensitive skin may experience contact dermatitis from lanolin, resulting in a rash or skin irritation

Skin Irritation: Particularly sensitive skin might find lanolin too heavy, causing irritation or discomfort.

Other Uses for Lanolin Cream

Besides treating dry skin, lanolin cream has additional uses and benefits:

As a lip balm: Lanolin’s skin-softening properties make it an excellent solution for chapped lips.

For breastfeeding mothers: Applying lanolin cream to sore nipples can provide relief and promote healing.

To soothe diaper rash: The gentle and protective nature of lanolin makes it suitable for soothing and preventing diaper rash in babies.

For protecting minor cuts and scrapes: Lanolin cream’s emollient properties make it ideal for shielding minor cuts and scrapes from further irritation or infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Lanolin Cream be Used on The Face?

Yes, lanolin cream can be used on the face and is suitable for dry, irritated, and sensitive skin.

However, due to its emollient nature, lanolin can leave a greasy layer on the skin’s surface, which some skin types may not tolerate well.

Is Lanolin Cream Suitable for All Skin Types?

While lanolin is generally safe for all skin types, those with known sensitivities or allergies should proceed with caution.

Additionally, lanolin is a heavy emollient that can clog pores and cause acne in those prone to congested and oily skin.

Does Lanolin Get Rid of Wrinkles?

While lanolin doesn’t have cellular regenerating properties that can reverse or prevent wrinkles, it can help make them appear less prominent by softening dry and rough skin.

Is Lanolin Better Than Vaseline?

Both lanolin and Vaseline are fantastic occlusive agents that can seal moisture into the skin, but lanolin also has emollient properties and can hold up to 400% of its weight in moisture, which makes it more hydrating for dry skin.

Who Should Not Use Lanolin?

Those with oily and acne-prone skin might find lanolin too heavy, greasy, and comedogenic.

Additionally, some people may be allergic to lanolin and should avoid using it.

New Dior Beauty – Powder Filters, Miss Dior Essence, On Stage Lips

0

Dior seems to be the winner this year with the most beauty launches that have won my heart. They launched a few new things recently including a new blurring pressed powder, new fragrance and lipsticks.

Dior Forever Nude Filter Powders

Dior Forever Nude Matte Filter and Nude Radiant Filter

There are new pressed powders called the Dior Forever Nude Matte Filter and Nude Radiant Filter ($52 each). The Nude Matte Filter Powders come in six different shades. I opted for 02 Light for the foundation shades in 2.5N and 3N and it’s a great match. The powder has an ultra fine texture and has a beautiful natural finish. It sets naturally, blurs and adds just the slightest bit of pigment to even out the skin.

The Nude Radiant Filter comes in one shade which is an iridescent white in the compact. On my skin it applies very naturally without any frost and doesn’t leave any white cast. It gives the skin a very natural glow to give a subtle brightening effect.

I shared a demo application of the Nude Radiant Filter here.

Out of the two I think the Radiant Filter is the winner if I had to just pick one. The main downside is both of these have fragrance in them. I sometimes have issues with fragrance in foundation, but with powders I have no irritation. Luckily both of these worked for my skin but I’ve had a lot of readers message me telling me they could not wear these because of the fragrance.

If you want a similar effect but unscented, I recommend trying the NARS Light Reflecting line. They have this in both the pressed and loose versions and I think they are highly under-rated.

New Miss Dior Essence

Miss Dior Essence perfume review

One of the latest fragrance additions is the Miss Dior Essence which is a bolder more intense variation of the Miss Dior. I was thrilled to be able to partner with Bloomingdale’s to share a first look at this one on Instagram here. This one is noticeably more intense with a strong emphasis on the fruity jam blackberry notes. It’s very gourmand and sweet and I think it’s a fun darker twist on Miss Dior without being too dark. The dry down reveals more woody notes of oak which gives it a unique twist.

Rouge Dior On Stage

I’m always a sucker for new Dior lip launches. The newest for lips is their Rouge Dior On Stage ($48 each). These are ultra creamy opaque lipsticks packaged in a slim twist up tube. To me they are like a creamier thicker version of the NARS Afterglow Sensual Shine Lipstick. I really like the formula and love the colors although I do wish they had more neutrals and lighter options. The colors they launched seem to be more focused on the transition to the fall season. They have a glossy finish and because they are semi-thick they adhere really well to the lips. These have a floral powdery scent.

Vitamin C For Skin: Benefits + Application

0

Vitamin C has been key ingredient in skincare for several years now and for good reason. This potent antioxidant protects against environmental damage, strengthens, firms, and brightens the skin. If you’re not already sold on why you need vitamin C in your skincare ritual, let our guide to all things vitamin C for skin help you find the perfect C-packed product for your complexion.

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that stimulates collagen production, while simultaneously working as an anti-inflammatory to speed up wound healing. But before you start adding in more citrus to your diet, know that topical application is much preferred to ingestion. When applied topically everyday, you can expect to see results in as little as 8 weeks. That’s not to say you should go out and rub a lemon or orange on your skin, it’s actually an unstable ingredient for skincare so needs to be packaged into the right formulation to reap all the benefits.

We focus on three derivatives of vitamin C, each providing a different piece of the vitamin C puzzle:

L-Ascorbic Acid

What is l-ascorbic acid? The most common form of vitamin C, l-ascorbic acid helps destroy reactive oxidizing agents and other free radicals which can lead to skin damage. Because of this ability, it provides important protection against damage induced by UV radiation. Vitamin C also improves skin elasticity, decreases wrinkles by stimulating collagen synthesis, reduces erythema, promotes wound healing, and treats unwanted discoloration of skin. Find this wonder ingredient in C-Shield Anti-Pollution Drops, Hydra-Bright Vitamin C Drops, and Hydra-Bright AHA Hydrator.

And-VC™

One of the most effective derivatives available. Several clinical studies show its unsurpassed effectiveness at smoothing, brightening, and protecting the skin. More specifically, Et-VC™ increases skin’s suppleness, reduces pores, and hyperpigmentation and offers protection from photoaging after UVB exposure. Find it in C-Shield Anti-Pollution Drops, Hydra-Bright Vitamin C Drops, and Hydra-Bright AHA Hydrator.

Ascorbyl Glucoside

A stable derivative that is converted into l-ascorbic acid by natural enzymes in the skin. Provides the benefits of l-ascorbic acid: brightening, firming and antioxidant repair, without oxidation issues. Find it in C-Shield Anti-Pollution Drops and Hydra-Bright Vitamin C Drops.

Why Do I Need Vitamin C For Skin?

We can’t prevent our skin from aging, but we can protect it from environmental damage that accelerates signs of aging. Free radical damage from the sun, pollution, and blue light can contribute to fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and a weakening of our moisture barrier.

The biggest benefit of using vitamin C is protection against these free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that “steal” electrons from the nearby atoms in healthy cells, setting off a cycle of free radical creation, which ultimately results in the destruction of healthy cells and tissue. Free radicals are thought to cause a number of skin conditions related to aging, including skin darkening, inflammation, and the breakdown of collagen and elastin—elements that make the skin plump and youthful. Years of exposure to free radicals causes our skin to show signs of aging.

How Do I Choose a Vitamin C Serum?

In order for vitamin C to be effectively absorbed into the skin, it’s important that the pH balance is between 2.0 – 3.8. Next, look at the formula and packaging. You’ll notice that vitamin C serums are often in darker bottles or amber glass. This is because it slows the rate of oxidation and preserves efficacy. For our C-Shield Anti-Pollution Drops and Hydra-Bright Vitamin C Drops serums, our unique trio of vitamin C prevents oxidation, regardless of packaging.

Finally, look at your skin type. Both of our antioxidant serum formulas contain the effective trio but each contains its own unique added benefits. The biggest difference is whether you’re looking to prevent aging or repair signs of aging.

C-Shield Anti-Pollution Drops

  • Clinically proven to improve brightness and skin clarity
  • Daily antioxidant, anti-pollution, blue light, and environmental protection serum
  • Helps prevent signs of aging

  • Reparative peptides stimulate collagen and elastin production for a more youthful glow

What Other Vitamin C Products Are There?

We love vitamin C so much, we feature it in many other products to give them that protective, brightening boost. If you’re looking for complexion protection with a hint of tint, try our genius multitasking C-Shield Anti-Pollution Moisture Tint. Sunscreen, skincare, and makeup with vitamin C. What’s not to love. Plus it pairs well with either vitamin C serum too.

For a moisturizer that has a dose of vitamin C for its radiance renewing powers try the Hydra-Bright AHA Hydrator. Clinically proven to brighten, smooth, and hydrate skin for a healthy glow, it plays super well layered over either of the vitamin C serums and offers instant luminosity. And, to add a little extra vitamin C boost and blue light defense to the delicate eye area, try C-Shield Eye Restore Hydrator.

Where Does Vitamin C Fit In My Skincare Routine?

Wondering when to use vitamin C serum in your routine? First, choose the antioxidant serum best suited for your skin type and apply in the morning after cleansing and toning, before moisturizing. Pairing perfectly with hyaluronic acid, you can layer it on with HA-Revive Hyaluronic Drops for a truly nourishing daily combination.

What About Vitamin C + SPF?

The ultimate skin-protecting power couple, step forward skin-shielders vitamin C and SPF. Effective environmental protectors in their own right, vitamin C helps repair and reverse free radical damage, while SPF is essential for blocking the sun’s harmful rays. With studies showing that layering on a vitamin C serum before applying SPF, boosts the efficacy of your overall protection more than just using SPF alone, double-down on your skin defense and boost your glow with this power pairing.

Any Other Vitamin C Skin Benefits?

Yes! Beyond what we all know about vitamin C, we have the results to back it up. Our C-Shield Anti-Pollution Drops are clinically proven to show improved brightness by up to 61% after just one week, with increased efficacy after one month.

Knowing all this about this must-have ingredient, there’s never been a better time to kick-start your preventative aging routine or repair and reverse any environmental damage with vitamin C powered products.

A guide to spotting high-quality hair extensions — Posh Lifestyle & Beauty Blog

0

When it comes to enhancing your look, hair extensions can be a game-changer, offering volume, length, and versatility. However, not all hair extensions are created equal, and choosing the right ones can make a significant difference in achieving a natural and lasting result. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key factors to consider when spotting high-quality hair extensions, helping you make informed decisions and avoid common pitfalls. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or looking to upgrade, these tips will ensure you select the best extensions for your needs.

Hair Type and Origin

When choosing a hair extension supplier, understanding the hair type and its origin is essential for ensuring quality and a natural look. While Synthetic Hair Extensions are more affordable, they can appear less natural and are limited in terms of styling (they can’t handle heat or drying). Human hair extensions, however, are generally the best option as they offer a realistic appearance and can be styled and treated like your own hair.

The origin of the hair also plays a role in its texture and durability. For example, Indian, Brazilian, and European hair is often prized for its strength, thickness, and adaptability to different styling needs. Ethically sourced and minimally processed hair from these regions tends to maintain its integrity over time, giving you a more long-lasting and natural result. Whether you’re looking for silky straight hair or voluminous curls, choosing the right hair type and origin will make a big difference in the overall performance and appearance of your extensions.

Colour Match

Getting the right colour match is crucial for making hair extensions look natural and seamless. High-quality extensions should blend perfectly with your natural hair colour, creating a unified look that’s virtually undetectable. Many premium extensions come in multi-tonal shades, which incorporate a variety of hues to mimic the natural variations found in real hair, helping to achieve a more realistic effect. When selecting a colour, it’s essential to consider both the base shade and any highlights or lowlights in your own hair to ensure the best match. Some brands offer custom colour options or professional colour-matching services to help you find the perfect fit. If unsure, always go for a slightly lighter shade since darker colours can be easily blended in or toned down. A well-matched colour ensures that your extensions enhance your look without drawing attention to themselves.

Durability and Maintenance

Durability and maintenance are key factors when investing in hair extensions, as they determine how long your extensions will last and how much care they require. Human hair extensions are generally more durable than synthetic ones, lasting up to a year or more with proper care. On the other hand, synthetic hair extensions may last only a few months and are more prone to tangling and matting. They also cannot withstand heat styling or colouring, limiting your options for customisation. Proper storage, such as keeping them tangle-free and away from humidity, also helps prolong their lifespan. By taking care of your extensions and using quality products, you can ensure they stay looking vibrant and natural for as long as possible.

Finding high-quality hair extensions requires careful consideration of several factors, including hair type, origin, colour match, durability, and maintenance. By investing in the right extensions, you can enjoy a natural, seamless look that enhances your style while lasting longer and requiring less upkeep. Whether you want to add volume, length, or a new dimension to your hair, understanding these elements will help you make informed decisions and get the most out of your extensions. With the right choice and proper care, you can achieve stunning results that truly transform your look.

Do You Need an Image Consultant Certification to Become a Personal Stylist?

Hello, fashion lovers! Today I’m here to answer one of the most asked questions in the styling industry: do you need a certification to become a personal stylist?

First, let me clarify that I have two divisions in my business: one where I help clients find their personal style, and another where I teach aspiring stylists how to start their styling businesses. So, if you’re an aspiring stylist, keep reading!

The answer to this question is simple: you do not need a certification to become a stylist. However, you cannot become a successful stylist with your styling abilities alone. You must learn how to run a business, serve clients, and create packages and pricing.

Having all these fancy degrees and certifications doesn’t matter in this industry. What matters most is your ability to make your clients look and feel amazing.

I learned this firsthand when Stacy London, the queen of personal style, trained me. I was so excited to be a certified, hand-selected stylist by Stacy London, but when I told my clients, they had no idea who she was! What they cared about was whether I could make them look better.

So, if you’re an aspiring stylist, focus on getting educated in ways that will make you a better stylist and business owner. Seek educational opportunities to teach you how to style beyond your type, run a business, and serve your clients.

Smart Ways to Save on Beauty Without Sacrificing Quality – LAMAV

0

EOFY is almost here and it’s time to audit our spending habits over the past year while also planning to do better with our finances in the New Financial Year. A basic skincare routine to maintain skin health is essential for everyone, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Whether you’re a skincare junkie, a makeup lover, or someone who just wants to maintain daily skin health without spending a fortune, there are practical ways to trim your beauty budget without sacrificing results. Here’s how to look and feel your best—without overspending.

STICK TO BASICS

Healthy, glowing skin doesn’t always come from a 10 step makeup routine. Finding the right products that support your skin types and concerns is essential and consistency is key. Focus on the essentials: a gentle cleanser, a good moisturiser, and SPF. These three go a long way and prevent you from impulse-buying trendy products you may not need. If you really want to glow, focus on skin health from the inside out. Drinking enough water, exercising regularly and reducing stress will all contribute significantly to skin health and don’t cost a penny.

INVEST IN MULTI-USE PRODUCTS

Look for makeup and skincare products that serve more than one purpose. Tinted moisturisers with SPF, lip and cheek tints, or moisturisers that double as night creams help you streamline your routine and reduce the number of items you need to buy. From body care to makeup, find our top multi-tasking products below.

Mineral Makeup

Most mineral makeup is suitable for all skin types as it won’t dry or irritate the skin but it also has a natural ability to absorb excess oil without accentuating fine lines or making the skin look flaky. Sensitive, Acne Prone and Mature Skin types can all benefit from wearing mineral makeup.

Mineral Makeup is versatile, buildable and can be adjusted to suit the time of year and changes in your skin tone. A small amount of mineral makeup can be applied to even out your complexion, and more layers can be  applied for fuller coverage to conceal blemishes and pigmentation. Mineral makeup allows you to get the finish you desire without looking cakey.

BB Cream

BB creams are serious time savers, streamlining your skincare and makeup routine by removing the need for multiple products before you run out the door. We all know how important hydration is for general skin health and age defence, and including BB cream as part of your daily skincare ritual ensures your skin is supported with hydration every morning. Most BB creams also contain a variety of antioxidants, bio-actives and natural SPF that support brightening, age-defence and healthy skin. Applying a BB cream every morning will deliver skin loving ingredients to your complexion on the daily!

LAMAV’s Certified Organic BB Cream is a lightweight formula suitable for all skin types. Quick and easy to apply, our clever colour adaptive organic BB Cream is specifically formulated to smooth and even out your complexion, masking imperfections for the ultimate flawless, everyday finish.

Apply our BB cream in a light layer for everyday wear, use as a hydrating skin tint by mixing with your daily moisturiser or use as a base layer for mineral powder products to achieve fuller coverage.

Mineral Powder Foundation

Mineral foundation can be applied in light layers for everyday wear or built up for more coverage. It can also be used as a setting powder through the t-zone and re-applied to absorb excess oil and touch up when your makeup needs a refresh in the afternoon. The best part? LAMAV’s Mineral Foundation Powders are breathable, naturally oil absorbing and infused with Organic Rosehip and Vitamin C to nourish and protect the skin as you wear it. No drying powder to be seen here!

If you don’t have a bronzer on hand you can also apply more of your mineral makeup to achieve a contour below the cheeks or add some colour to areas that the sun would naturally hit – forehead, cheeks and nose.

Mineral Bronzer

Bronzers are a very versatile product and can be used on various areas of the face. The obvious way to use bronzer is on the cheeks to add definition and warmth to the area. Depending on the undertone of your bronzer, you may also be able to use it as a contour (provided it’s not too warm or shimmery as the best colours for a natural contour are flat and cooler colours)

Use LAMAV’s Organic Mineral Bronzer on the eyes as an eye shadow or soft, smokey eyeliner.

Forgot to tan? Ensure your skin is hydrated and any moisturiser has had time to absorb before bringing glow back to your body with an even dusting of our Mineral Bronzer.

Hydrating Toner

A hydrating toner can be a very versatile product and a must-have for the bathroom drawer and handbag. Use as a toner to:

  • Hydrate and balance the skin prior to moisturising

  • Set makeup and bring glow back to skin after powder application

  • Refresh your complexion throughout the day when skin is feeling dry and dull

Balms

The right balm can be used on the face and body to relieve dry and flaky skin. LAMAV’s Intense Repair Eye Balm was specifically formulated to hydrate, firm and strengthen the delicate eye area, however its benefits can extend beyond the under eyes. After treating your delicate eye area to some serious nourishment, apply any leftover product to relieve chapped lips, dry cuticles and any flakey skin patches on the face and body.

Body Oil

Opt for an Organic Body oil over a moisturiser as they offer more nourishment and multi-tasking benefits. Invest in an Ayurvedic Body Oil from LAMAV and enjoy the following benefits:

PATCH TEST

Not taking the time to read ingredients labels and patch test new products before purchasing is one of the fastest ways to waste money on skincare and makeup. Where possible, test patch products in store or ask brands for samples before committing to full sized products. Trust us, your bank account and skin will thank you for avoiding a full-face or body skin reaction.

Signing up for your favourite brand’s newsletters will ensure you receive notice of Exclusive Deals and events that may not be advertised online. BUY IN BULK

If there’s a staple product that your skin loves and you use consistently (such as a cleanser or shampoo), buying in bulk or getting the larger size will cost you less in the long run. You can buy LAMAV’s Award Winning Sweet Orange Balancing Cleanser in supersize to ensure you get more for your money and never run out of your favourite cleanser!

DON’T WASTE PRODUCT

This may seem like an obvious one, but a little usually goes a long way with most beauty items. Rather than going in with a huge amount of skincare that you don’t need, it’s better for your skin and your bank account if you start with a smaller amount and apply more if needed.. Invest in LAMAV’s tube key to get the most out of your face masks, exfoliants and hand cream.

Saving money on beauty products doesn’t mean compromising on quality. Taking the time to invest in the right products,  plan ahead and shop smart, you can maintain your favourite routines and treat yourself—without overspending.
