8 Reasons to make your own skincare even if there’s plenty to buy – Draft Ariane

0

Have you ever considered making your own skincare products before? If not, you definitely should! Not only is making your own skincare surprisingly easy, fun, and rewarding (and often cheaper than buying it in stores!), but it’s also an incredibly empowering skill to have.

Imagine being able to whip up a cream, choose the ingredients you want, and customise it to your own skin needs and personal preferences. Pretty amazing, right? And that’s just the beginning.

There are plenty more reasons why you should start making your own skincare products, even though there’s plenty to buy. Read this post to find out why you should be making your own skincare products, ASAP.

Top 8 reasons to make your own skincare products

Here are the top 8 reasons why you should be making your own skincare products from scratch, even if there’s plenty to buy:

Reason #1: You get to control what’s in your skincare

The number 1 reason why you should be making your own skincare products from scratch is that you get full control over what’s in your products, and subsequently, what goes on your skin.

You get to choose every ingredient yourself, so there’s no need to decipher confusing labels or worry about hidden ingredients. You can use high-quality natural and organic ingredients such as oils, butters, plant powders, herbal extracts, essential oils, and natural colourants.

And the best part? When you learn to formulate (aka creating cosmetic products), you also gain knowledge of how ingredients interact with each other and can select the best ones for your unique skin type and needs.

At Formula Botanica, the world’s leading online organic cosmetic formulation school, we teach people from all over the world how to formulate natural skincare and haircare from scratch. Tens of thousands of students have enrolled in our award-winning courses before, and never looked back.

You can learn more about how to make your own skincare products in the posts below, and some of the benefits:

Reason #2: You can custom-make skincare to fit your needs

The second reason why you should be making your own skincare products is that you can custom-make products to suit your own skin needs and personal preferences.

How many times have you bought a product, only to find it doesn’t suit your skin, and it ends up in a bin? That’s because off-the-shelf products aren’t fit for everyone.

When you make your own skincare, you can create and customise products that match your skin type, concerns, and lifestyle. Whether you need extra hydration, gentle care for sensitive skin, or targeted solutions, you get to control every aspect of the product.

In fact, many successful indie beauty brands were born because the founders couldn’t find products that worked for them! That was the case for many of our graduates, who learned how to formulate with us and went on to launch their brand on the market, creating a real difference in the world.

You can find out more about our inspiring graduates and their stories below:

Our graduates

Reason #3: It’s a fun and creative hobby

The third reason why you should be making your own skincare products instead of buying them is that it’s very fun and creative. It’s also surprisingly easy to make your own skincare, in many ways, similar to cooking! It’s hands-on, rewarding, and gives you the chance to experiment with different textures, scents, and ingredients. Plus, you can share your creations with family and friends.

At Formula Botanica, we often compare formulation to cooking. When you make a cream, for example, you’re mixing oil and water together, which is very similar to making mayonnaise.

And who knows? This hobby could even turn into a business in a few years time. Many of our students and graduates started just for fun and went on to create successful skincare brands.

If you’re looking for a new creative hobby that could become a side hustle, or even a full-time career, you should definitely start making your own skincare.

Reason #4: You reconnect with centuries of history

Talking about cooking and other life skills, did you know that people have been making their own beauty products for thousands of years?

For most of that time, formulation was a skill as common as cooking, passed down through generations. It’s only in the last 100 years that we’ve grown used to buying cosmetics from brands, and were taught to believe that only chemists could formulate. If you’re curious about how that came to be, check out these resources:

The history of botanical formulation

Podcast 130: History shows that everyone can formulate

Fortunately, nowadays, people are reclaiming that ancestral knowledge, and we’re proud to say that Formula Botanica played an integral part in it.

By learning how to make your own skincare products, you reconnect with centuries of history and acquire a valuable skill, which feels incredibly empowering.

Reason #5: It saves you money

Did you know that a large portion of the price of cosmetic products, especially premium or luxury ones, goes toward branding, marketing, PR, and packaging, rather than the ingredients themselves? In some cases, the actual ingredient cost can be as low as 3–5% of the product price. Add distributor and retailer mark-ups, and it’s easy to see how the cost climbs.

When you make your own skincare, you can spend your money on the best, natural ingredients instead of paying for all the extras, and save loads of money in the process. And all you need to get started is some basic kitchen equipment like glass bowls, mini whisks, spatulas, and a digital jewellery scale.

There’s no need to invest in expensive lab equipment unless you want to sell your products. And even then, it’s pretty cheap!

We have plenty of helpful posts about how to set up your home formulation lab, and what tools you’ll need at first:

Reason #6: You get to use the freshest ingredients

One of the great benefits of making your own skincare is that you can use fresh and high-quality ingredients.

At Formula Botanica, we teach you how to research and understand key natural cosmetic ingredients, from simple to advanced, including botanical oils, essential oils, hydrosols, natural emulsifiers, gums, surfactants, preservatives, pigments, and innovative active extracts. You can learn more about these ingredients below:

Natural formulation 101: Beginner’s guide to skincare ingredients

Natural ingredients typically have shorter shelf lives than synthetic ingredients. While this might seem like a limitation, it’s actually an advantage.

Many of our graduates highlight this in their marketing, saying they produce small-batch, artisanal formulations made with fresh, potent ingredients. In fact, customers seem to prefer it! You’d want your food made with fresh ingredients, so why wouldn’t you want the same for your skincare?

When you make your own skincare, you buy only what you need for each batch, so your products are made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, which are good for your skin and, if you’re selling, for your customers’ skin too.

Reason #7: You can use sustainable ingredients

Making your own skincare gives you the power to make choices that are better for the planet. Mainstream beauty often relies on disposable packaging, energy-intensive manufacturing, and ingredients sourced from mono-culture crops, which can harm biodiversity. The beauty industry is only now beginning to take responsibility for its role in climate change.

When you create your own products, you can explore eco-friendly options like using locally sourced or upcycled ingredients, creating refillable or minimal packaging, making solid or dry products that reduce water and energy use, or simply producing smaller batches to cut waste.

Sustainability is a journey, but by formulating your own skincare, you take control of your impact. You decide what goes into your products, how they’re packaged, and how they’re made, so your skincare can be as kind to the planet as it is to your skin.

Reason #8: You can change your life

Last but not least, making your own skincare can be truly life-changing – and we don’t say that lightly.

We’ve seen tens of thousands of our graduates go on to launch their own indie beauty brands after studying with us. What often started as a hobby quickly became a passion, sparking a desire not only to create skincare but also to make a real difference in people’s lives, and in many cases, transform their careers.

Some of our graduates go from start-up to international retail within just a year or two, even winning major beauty awards along the way.

The community aspect is equally life-changing. When you enrol in one of our courses, you join a global network of like-minded, supportive formulators and become part of an unstoppable natural beauty movement.

The natural cosmetics sector is booming, making it an exciting time to get involved. In fact, there has never been a better time to be making your own natural skincare porducts. The global market for natural and organic cosmetics and personal care is projected to reach nearly $59 billion by 2031, growing at an annual rate of 5.3% between 2022 and 2031*.

CAUSES, CONCERNS & SAFE TREATMENTS ~ THE MALE GROOMING REVIEW

0

Hair loss is a common issue that affects millions of men worldwide, often leading to emotional distress and a loss of self-confidence. For many, a thick head of hair is associated with youth, vitality, and attractiveness, so its gradual thinning or sudden loss can be alarming. Understanding the causes of hair loss and exploring safe, effective treatments is crucial for those looking to manage this concern.

Why Men Experience Hair Loss

Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair loss in men. This hereditary condition is driven by genetics and the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which can shrink hair follicles and shorten the hair growth cycle. As a result, hair becomes thinner and eventually stops growing altogether in certain areas, typically starting at the temples or crown.

image of man with hair

Other factors can contribute to hair loss, including:

  • Stress: High levels of physical or emotional stress can trigger temporary hair shedding.

  • Poor nutrition: A lack of essential vitamins and minerals may weaken hair health.

  • Medical conditions: Thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases, and scalp infections can all lead to hair thinning.

  • Medications: Certain treatments, such as chemotherapy, can cause hair loss.

The Emotional Impact

Hair loss can significantly affect a man’s self-esteem and mental well-being. Many men feel less confident in social and professional settings, and some may experience anxiety or depression as a result. This emotional toll often prompts men to seek solutions, ranging from topical treatments and supplements to surgical options.

Safe and Effective Treatments

Fortunately, there are various safe treatments available for men concerned about hair loss. The key is to choose evidence-backed solutions that promote hair health without harmful side effects.

1. Nutritional supplements
Supplements like HR23+ have become popular among men looking for a natural approach to hair maintenance. HR23+ is a multi-vitamin hair supplement designed to help prevent excessive hair shedding and support stronger, healthier hair growth. It contains a blend of vitamins, minerals, and natural extracts such as biotin, zinc, saw palmetto, and pumpkin seed oil. These ingredients are known to nourish hair follicles, block DHT production, and improve scalp health. Importantly, HR23+ is free from drugs and harsh chemicals, making it a safe option for long-term use.

2. Topical treatments
Minoxidil is one of the most well-researched topical treatments for hair loss. Applied directly to the scalp, it can stimulate hair growth and slow down thinning. It is available over the counter and is generally well tolerated, although some users may experience minor scalp irritation.

3. Prescription medications
Finasteride is a prescription pill that helps reduce DHT levels in the body. It has been proven to slow hair loss and, in some cases, promote regrowth. However, it may cause side effects such as decreased libido or mood changes, so it’s essential to discuss its use with a healthcare provider.

4. Lifestyle changes
Maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, managing stress, and practicing good scalp hygiene can all contribute to healthier hair. Regular exercise and adequate sleep also support overall well-being, which in turn can positively impact hair health.

5. Surgical options
For men with advanced hair loss, hair transplant surgery can offer a permanent solution. This procedure involves moving hair follicles from one part of the scalp to thinning areas. While effective, it can be costly and requires recovery time.

Final Thoughts

Hair loss is a natural part of aging for many men, but that doesn’t mean it has to be accepted without options. Today, a range of safe treatments—including nutritional supplements like HR23+, topical applications, and medical therapies—can help men manage hair loss and maintain confidence. Before starting any treatment, it’s wise to consult a healthcare professional to determine the most suitable approach based on individual needs. By staying informed and proactive, men can take positive steps toward healthier hair and a stronger sense of self-assurance.

How to Fix Dry and Dull Skin Naturally

Struggling with Dry, Dull Skin? Here’s What You Can Do!

Dry and dull skin is a common issue many of us face, especially as the seasons change. If you’ve noticed that your skin feels tight, looks flaky, and lacks that radiant glow, you’re not alone. But why does this happen?

Dryness occurs when your skin loses moisture, and dullness is often a result of dead skin cells accumulating on the surface, preventing your natural radiance from shining through.

In this post, we’ll explore the best natural ways to combat dry, dull skin and restore your glow.

Why Is Your Skin Dry and Dull?

Before we get into the solutions, let’s understand the causes. Dry and dull skin can be triggered by several factors:

  • Harsh Weather: Cold or dry weather can sap the moisture from your skin, leaving it dry and flaky.
  • Hot Water: Washing your face or showering with hot water can strip your skin of natural oils, leading to dryness.
  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough water or consuming hydrating foods can leave your skin feeling parched.
  • Harsh Products: Using skincare products with harsh chemicals can do more harm than good, causing irritation and dryness.
  • Hormonal Changes: Peri-menopause and menopause can lead to significant changes in the skin, including increased dryness and a loss of elasticity. These hormonal shifts reduce natural oil production, making it more difficult to retain moisture.

Natural Solutions to Revive Dry Skin

1. Hydrate from the Inside Out

One of the simplest ways to keep your skin hydrated is to ensure you’re drinking plenty of water. Try to drink at least 2 litres a day and pair that with water-rich foods like cucumber, watermelon, and celery.

2. Use a Gentle, Natural Cleanser

Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of essential oils. Opt for a gentle, natural cleanser that cleanses without over-drying your skin.

The Power of a Simple, Effective Skincare Routine

When it comes to maintaining a healthy, glowing complexion, the right skincare routine can make all the difference. By incorporating products that cleanse, tone, and hydrate your skin, you can restore its moisture balance and give it the nourishment it needs.

Niche perfumery: strong growth potential in Brazil

0

Brazil is one of the world’s leading perfume markets, ranking third in value and second in volume. According to Euromonitor International, the mass market is expected to reach a turnover of 44.3 billion reais (7.13 billion euros) in 2027, representing a cumulative growth of 42.1% since 2022. For the premium market, forecasts are for 6.8 billion reais (1.09 million euros), an increase of 89% over the same period.

Within the premium segment, Brazilian niche perfumery is booming, with the emergence of numerous independent brands.

« There is no market study specifically dedicated to niche perfumery in Brazil. It is a recent segment, with few players and which is still under construction, but its development potential is undeniable. “, explain Fábio Ottaiano, founder and CEO of Lviens Parfums.

The brand created in 2011 first offered a range of home products. “ It was a question of opportunity. In many countries, home fragrances were already well established, and in Brazil there were no major national brands specializing in this area. Starting with home fragrances allowed us to penetrate the market, establish good distribution and build a reputation for quality, which gave us the confidence to take the next step, launching personal fragrances in 2019 », Explains the manager.

Original creations, vectors of personal expression

The brand Becquerfounded a little over a year ago, followed a similar approach. First home products, then personal perfumes in roll-on. « The reception was excellent, so much so that the eau de parfum became a natural part of the brand’s evolution. Personal perfumery has always been part of our projects and arrived at the right time, when the brand had already acquired sufficient sensory maturity and identity to express what we really wanted to convey through a perfume. “, tell Fernando Skiarski, founding partner.

According to the entrepreneur, the 15 unisex eau de parfum launched by Becquer have a strong personality and do not go unnoticed. “ We want our customers to fully express themselves and for our products to be a vector of personal expression. “. He notes a growing trend to consume exclusive products. “ Not in terms of price, but rather in terms of the creation and distribution process. People seek experiences more than material goods ».

It is on the basis of the same observation thatAna Christina Gudme founded Gávea Perfumes in 2023. « We identified an opportunity to meet the needs of sophisticated Brazilian women seeking authenticity and wanting to express their individuality through fragrance. With our limited edition model, we create a real feeling of exclusivity. Our exclusive collections guarantee our customers access to truly rare fragrances ».

Priority to olfactory quality

According to Ana Christina Gudme, the perfumes created by Gávea have their own identity, which does not follow market trends. “ This gives us complete creative freedom. We work with complex olfactory compositions and selected noble raw materials, because in the niche market, the priority investment is olfactory quality ».

Despite its premium positioning, niche perfumery often offers relatively sober packaging. « The focus is 100% on the scent. If we could offer the perfume without packaging, that would be ideal. Since this is impossible, we use bottles and packaging that do not distract from the fragrance, the real star », explains Fernando Skiarski.

According to him, the niche market should develop in Brazil, and Becquer is preparing to support this development. The brand will open its fourth store in São Paulo by the end of the year, and a fifth is planned for early 2026 in the same city. “ We are studying other models to bring the Becquer experience to a wider audience ».

For his part, Fábio Ottaiano indicates that Lviens is also expanding and with plans to open a first physical store. “ Our goal is to develop the presence of the brand in the national market, but we are already present in some Latin American countries, such as Mexico, Uruguay and Chile. I am convinced that Brazilian niche perfumery will become an important and respected sector, well beyond national borders. Brazil has strong potential for brands in this segment, with unique creativity. I believe that the country has the potential to create perfumes that are truly different from what already exists and to become a reference in the international market. ».

5 Reasons To Embrace Your Gray Hair

0

In case you haven’t noticed, we’re in the middle of a gray-hair revolution. Silvery strands, creamy white hues, and salt and pepper hair are trendy unlike ever before, as more and more women continue to #BreakTheBias.

Considering some women begin to find gray hairs in their twenties (or in some cases even earlier), isn’t it about time we embrace what our mommas gave us? There’s something liberating—not to mention fashionable!—about just letting it grow out already. It’s a hot topic of conversation, too. Take the return of Miranda Hobbes on the Sex And The City revival, And Just Like Thatfor example. In her fifties, the former lawyer was embracing her grays, and it was a full-blown discussion between her, Charlotte, and many passionate online fans.

Meanwhile, in real life, celebrities are embracing their natural looks in a whole new way as well. The Walking Dead star Melissa McBride has beautiful white locks, Chrissy Teigen has chatted at length about her awesome gray streaks, and stars like Katie Holmes and Jessica Biel have even strutted their salt and pepper hair at awards shows in recent years.

The haircare industry is also getting in on the trend. Stylists are snipping up shorter styles that help embrace the grow-out phase, products that keep white hues looking fresh and sleek are popping up on shelves, and more experts are speaking out on proper gray hair maintenance.

At Luxy, we’ve expanded our shade selection to include two new light gray and dark gray hues that are perfect for embracing your grays while giving the appearance of naturally fuller and luxurious hair. Whether you’re looking for a ponytail extension, a clip-in bun, or extensions from our Halo and Seamless collection, we’ve got you covered. Read on to learn why and how you too can embrace this gray hair revolution, plus we’ve got some suggestions on how to style that natural new hair with some of our favorite products.

5 Reasons to Embrace Your Gray Hair

It’s Trendy

It used to be that only men were applauded for their distinguished, salt and pepper hairstyles. But these days it’s women who are showing off their natural looks in empowering new ways.

From TV shows and movies, to high fashion catwalks, to people we know and chat to in our everyday lives, it’s clear that more and more women are embracing their gray hair. In fact, the term “white hair” no longer conjures up the image of a grandmother or a questionable cat lady; instead we’re seeing younger models, powerful professionals, and everyday women prove just how beautiful gray hair can be—at any age.

It Can Save You Money

We love a good touch-up or balayage as much as the next person, and embracing your gray hair doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re never going to touch a bottle of color again. However, there is something to be said about the money you can save by skipping out on expensive highlights and other hair salon treatments by letting your natural tresses shine. Plus, after all those years of touching up your roots, wouldn’t it be nice to just skip all of that muss and fuss? Even though you’ll probably miss your hairdresser, just think of all the time you’ll save by not having to visit them every single month during those maintenance visits.

It’s Better For Your Tresses

Money and time aside, not dyeing your hair as frequently as you used to is undeniably good for your actual hair and scalp. Even though the formulas that we’ve got in salons these days are infinitely friendlier on your hair, they still cause some breakage and damage every time you use them. Gray hairs are particularly prone to damage by these kinds of dyes since gray hair follicles are void of melanin (the naturally occurring chemical that gives your hair pigmentation in the first place). Plus, strand cuticles themselves are thinner. A thinner cuticle means hair is less protected against water, UV rays, humidity, heat styling and—you guessed it!—chemicals. So as you begin to notice more grays in your life, embracing them instead of hiding them will actually be entirely healthier for your hair in the long-run.

It’s a Natural, Anti-Aging Look

Your first instinct may be to hide your gray hair because you feel as though it makes you look old. However that’s not necessarily the case. Darker hair tends to highlight facial features even more than lighter hair does, which is why salt and pepper hair may actually soften your overall look. If you want to get the most out of your new, natural tresses, work with your hairstylist to inject moisture and light-reflecting metallic and silver gray shades into your mane. It’s flattering, and when paired with a softer cut that frames the face, it can be totally youthful as well—especially in terms of hairstyles for women over 50.

It’s Downright Freeing

Look, at the end of the day women should do what makes them look and feel good, and every woman is different. However, if you’re tired of chasing away gray hairs and feel as though you’ve spent way too much time, money, and effort on maintaining the same hair colour for the past several years, you wouldn’t be alone. These days there are tons of social media support groups for women who have embraced their gray hair and haven’t looked back since. Not only are these women liberated from the pressures of keeping up an impossible battle, but they’re also taking a stance on the long-standing double standard between men and women as they age. If you too are tired of all that, then embracing your salt and pepper hair will probably be downright freeing for you, too.

5 Tips For Growing In Your Gray Hair

Don’t Rush It

When you first notice a gray hairit can seem as though it sprouted up overnight. By the time you decide to embrace it, it’s likely you’ve got some good streaks going on throughout your entire coif. So surely, once you let go, that gray hair will just come in already, right? Not necessarily. Your hair is going to do its own thing, and everybody’s thing is different. It can take months or even years for your hair to go completely gray, so it can be helpful to remember that this is a transition and not a total 180.

Work With a Stylist

If you’re not a fan of that streaky look or you want to add some depth and texture to your gray hair as you transition, the best thing to do is to find a stylist that is willing to work with you and who will help you to come up with an overall game plan. In some cases that may mean chopping off longer hair and embracing a softer bob, in other instances your stylist may recommend metallic or silver highlights or a balayage to help bridge the gap. Either way it’s important to know you’ve got options, and a stylist is the best person to help you explore them.

Change Up Your Products

When going gray, you may be surprised to learn the lineup of products sitting on your bathroom shelves will probably change as well. That’s because gray hair has a different composition than pigmented hair; it’s got a thinner cuticle wall and no melanin, which makes it more prone to damage. Plus, much like blonde tresses, gray hair can dull or lose its sheen, so selecting products that are meant to moisturize and plump up gray hair can be super beneficial to your overall hair and scalp health.

Ignore the Naysayers

Even though salt and pepper hair is one of the biggest trends in haircare right now, that doesn’t mean there aren’t those who judge. But when in life are you ever not going to be judged? People will always have opinions, so remember that if you’re doing you, then you’re on the right path. However, if someone does say something about your hair that gets you down, remember there are a ton of support groups out there.

A good place to start is Grombre, the Instagram account dedicated to the natural phenomenon of gray hair. The account showcases myriad women who aren’t just embracing, but who are rocking the look. There’s always strength in numbers, so if you’re feeling like you need a bit of a confidence boost, seek out others who are also doing their own gray hair thing.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

If you’ve decided to embrace this powerful gray hair transition, why not embrace total change? If you’ve always had long hair, perhaps you’ll want to try a shorter hairstyle on for size? Or if you’ve always had mid-length hair, maybe now is the time to see how much you’ll love those gray hair extensions you’ve always dreamed about. Not a fan of the stark contrast between white and brown? Opt for a softer shade of blonde to keep the bottom brighter as your new locks grow in. The point is that if you’re going to go for it, go for it. You can experiment with hair as much as you can with any other beauty trend, and these days there are so many nifty tools and products out there that the sky really is the limit.

4 Hairstyles To Try With Salt and Pepper Hair

Long and Sleek

Experts used to say that gray hair was best kept above the shoulders, but these days we’re seeing plenty of models and real-life women who are keeping salt and pepper hair long and luscious with applaudable results. If you’re worried about thinning or breaking hair and want to keep your natural gray hair shorter though, you can still add length with clip-in hair extensions. They’re a great way to experiment with different looks, plus we’ve got light and dark gray hues to perfectly match all of your gray hair needs. Want to add curls as well? Try out our budget-friendly Velcro hair rollers.

salt and pepper hair
Short and Soft

If you have thinning hair, or tresses that break after showering without the aid of a detangling wet hairbrusha soft and short shoulder-length style may be the way to go—especially if you’re not quite ready for a firing pixie cut. That’s because shorter styles weigh less and can give the appearance of fuller hair. Besides, if you want to add volume and a bit of length afterwards, that’s always easy to do with our Halo Hair Extensions. They’re made from 100 per cent straight Remy human hair and are specifically designed for fine-to-medium hair that’s about bust-length.

gray hair ponytail
A Pony For Days

Bouncy ponies are no longer for women in their twenties and early thirties. In fact we love the look of a soft and shimmery gray hair ponytail, which is easy to achieve in a matter of minutes. Get your own fuss-free ponytail with our clip-in ponytail extensionswhich add instant volume and length on those days when you just can’t be bothered to wash your hair.

gray hair bun

Dressing Intelligently in a Dumb Fashion World — Inside Out Style

Every season, someone tells us what’s “in” and what’s “out,” because fashion is a $1.05 trillion dollar industrial complex that wants you to be unhappy with your current wardrobe and buy, buy, buy. But you’re smarter than that. You don’t need an influencer or a magazine to tell you what looks good. Dressing intelligently in a dumb fashion world isn’t about rebellion for the sake of it. It’s about learning to trust your judgement and letting your values, not the latest algorithm, shape your wardrobe.

The fashion industry has one primary goal – to make you feel uncertain so you’ll buy something new. It tells you to express yourself, then sets rules about what that should look like. You’re told to be bold, but not too bold. To dress your age, but never look like you’ve given up. No wonder so many women feel stuck between wanting to look stylish and wanting to feel authentic.

Here’s the truth: you don’t need another list of “must-haves.” What you need is a way to think about style that puts you back in charge.’

Dressing Intelligently in a Dumb Fashion World — Inside Out StyleIntelligence Over Influence

The influencer world thrives on impulse. The goal isn’t to help you think – it’s to make you click. Intelligent style begins when you pause before buying and ask, ‘Why do I want this?

Is it because it fits your lifestyle and reflects your personality? Or because you saw someone confident wearing it and hoped to borrow a little of their magic? When you know the difference, your wardrobe becomes a reflection of who you are, not who you follow.

Reclaim Your Own Criteria

Over the years, I’ve written dozens of posts unpacking what “flattering” really means because the truth is, it’s never one-size-fits-all. In fact, flattering isn’t necessarily something that every woman wants. Fashion rules assume we all want the same outcomes: to look thinner, taller, younger, or wealthier. But real style comes from defining your own criteria. Each post connects back to one simple truth: intelligent style begins when you decide what matters most to you.

Ask yourself what really matters:

  1. Comfort that feels aligned, not lazy.
  2. Authenticity that lets your personality shine.
  3. Longevity that values quality over novelty.

You Can’t Fail at Style

Fashion loves to tell us when we’ve “got it wrong.” The wrong shoes. The wrong silhouette. The wrong decade. But style isn’t a test. It’s an ongoing conversation between you and your reflection.

If something feels like youthen it works. And if it doesn’t, that’s not failure, it’s feedback. The goal is to dress in a way that feels right for your body, your colouring, and your life today, not some idealised version of yourself.

Curate with Intention, Not Accumulation

The smartest wardrobes aren’t the biggest ones; they’re the most considered. Instead of asking, Do I like this?try:

  • Does this earn its space?
  • Would I miss it if it were to disappear?
  • Can I wear it easily and often?

The funniest (if you’re squeamish, skip this sentence) idea I came across recently from a professional organiser, about how to decide if you should keep an item…. ask yourself, “If it were covered in poop, would I throw it out or wash it?”  If you’d throw it out, it doesn’t have the value you want in your wardrobe.  Harsh but true!

When you think like a curator, your wardrobe becomes a collection of pieces that work together, not a museum of shopping mistakes.

Learn the Rules, Then Decide Which Ones Matter

Knowledge is freedom. Once you understand colour, proportion, and design, you stop relying on trends or outside approval. You can break any “rule” because you’ll know exactly why you’re breaking it.

That’s what the 7 Steps to Style program is built on. It gives you the tools to understand your body, your personality, and your colouring so you can make informed choices that reflect your values and your individuality.

Style becomes intelligent when it’s intentional.

The Smarter Way to Dress

Here’s a simple mindset to guide your decisions:

  1. Think – Notice what influences you and why.
  2. Feel – Pay attention to how your clothes affect your confidence and energy.
  3. Choose – Select what feels both right and real.

That’s dressing intelligently in a dumb fashion world. It’s not about outsmarting everyone else – it’s about outsmarting the noise.

Fashion isn’t the enemy, but it’s not your teacher either. The most intelligent style choices come from self-awareness, not self-doubt. Burn the rulebook, keep what serves you, and wear your intelligence as confidently as your favourite outfit.

Beautykinguk: AFTERSHAVE: Michael Bublé For Men

0

When it comes to celebrity fragrances I tend to steer well clear, they often smell cheap and nasty and I’m convinced (with zero evidence to back up this feeling) that more often than not it’s just cheap stuff whacked in a bottle and flogged to the gullible. I’ve had to kind of reassess this after being asked by the wife to review Michael Bublé Pour Homme.

At £39 for a 70ml bottle or £55 for 100ml, this I think sits in the mid-range for aftershaves – anything over £60 and I take a serious whiff of it before forking out my own cash. The attractiveness of the bottle, with its sharp angles and lines, are said to have been inspired by the microphone with the shade of blue being a reference to Buble himself and his usual choice of suit (or so I’m told).

MB Pour Homme is described as a rich signature scent for the sophisticated modern gentleman. The notes to Pour Homme are:

  • Head: Grapefruit, bergamot and pink pepper
  • Heart: Geranium, neroli and blond wood
  • Dry-down: Patchouli, sandalwood and musk

Almost as soon as this left the bottle I was in love with the fragrance – it’s unique, fresh and has a depth of fragrance that sits right in the middle of the woody and spicy fragrance family. The freshness of the citrusy notes really make this fragrance for me and blended with the Patchouli, you have an aroma that seamlessly takes you from day to night and one which is suitable for absolutely any man in your life.

My only question is if you’ve sold 55 million albums worldwide, why would you branch out into aftershave? You can’t be short of a few quid. The many questions that run through my head aside, this is a lovely fragrance that isn’t too heavy or warm on the nose. If you are looking for something a little unique this summer then you can do a lot worse than this.

In terms of celebrity aftershaves and fragrances, this stands head and shoulders above any other I’ve had the chance to sniff at.

Perfect for any occasion, this is one where throughout the day you’ll close your eyes and think “mmm, yes, this is actually a good fragrance” and you’ll be feeling good.

Try Selena Gomez’s “Spiced Apple Cider” Nails for a Thanksgiving Mani

0

Key Takeaways

  • Selena Gomez wore a cozy brown manicure.
  • Her nail artist, Tom Bachik, called the look “Spiced Apple Cider” nails.
  • It’s an easy look to get yourself, especially if you’re still looking for a Thanksgiving manicure.

The holiday beverage world is broad and beautiful enough that choosing what to sip at any given moment is almost stressful. There are so many drinks to indulge in, and so little time to indulge.

I barely had a second to enjoy my pumpkin spice lattes before peppermint mochas came back, and now the gingerbread is calling me. It’s a nice problem to have, but a problem nonetheless.

And then there’s ever-delicious apple cider, which I fear hasn’t been getting even a fraction of the treatment it deserves in the last few years. I was devastated to learn Starbucks stopped serving steamed apple juice, but maybe queen Selena Gomez will inspire them to bring it back? A red cup would look so cute with her recent “Spiced Apple Cider” manicure.

Selena Gomez’s “Spiced Apple Cider” Nails

In a recent “get ready with me” video posted to her Instagram account, Gomez showed off an autumnal Rare Beauty look and equally Thanksgiving-ready brown manicure. Per usual, she applied her makeup with perfectly filed and painted fingers thanks to nail artist Tom Bachik. In his own Instagram post, he dubbed the look “Sel’s Spiced Apple Cider Nails.”

Long and almond shaped, the 33-year-old’s nails were all painted the same cozy brown shade and finished with a super glossy top coat.

How to Get the Look

Bachik revealed that the color he used on Gomez was Aprés Nails’ shade of the same name: Spiced Apple Cider.

If you don’t have time for a professional appointment before your Thanksgiving plans are underway (or your tropical vacation—we also saw the nails featured in a November 23 warm weather getaway photo dump from Gomez), there are plenty of similar shades you can use to get the look at home.

J. Hannah’s Hepworth is a little lighter, but has the right orangeiness to it, and Manucurist’s Chestnut is similarly deep and gorgeous.

Paint a few coats on, add your glossy top coat, and enjoy all the memories (and beverages) the day has to offer.

The Origin Story of Woohoo Body

0

style=”;”
/>

Pull up a chair, grab a cuppa, and settle in because golly gosh, do we have an origin story for you.

It all started back in 2010.

We (Phoebe and Aaron — partners in life, soon-to-be parents, and now co-founders of Woohoo Body) were living in Newcastle, juggling day jobs and quietly wondering if life could be a little more than just the daily grind.

We weren’t founders.

We weren’t “entrepreneurs” (yet).

We were just two wide-eyed almost-parents staring down the barrel of adulthood and realising everything was about to change.

A bump, a balm, and a big idea

Phoebe was pregnant with our first bub. And like many expectant mums, she started seeing the world differently.

The supermarket aisle became a minefield. Every label got scrutinised. Every ingredient list became a puzzle. What she ate, what she wore, what she put on her skin… it all mattered more now because she wasn’t just looking after herself anymore.

That’s when Aaron disappeared into the kitchen.

Not for a snack (though there were plenty of those). For an experiment.

Flexing his cocktail mixology talents in a slightly different direction, he whipped up a belly balm using nothing but natural, nourishing ingredients. Practically edible. Plant-powered. Pure magic.

That little jar didn’t just soothe Phoebe’s stretching belly, it sparked something huge!

From one jar to one giant leap

Something shifted in us. It wasn’t just about the balm. It was about the feeling:

✨ That maybe we could create something meaningful of our own.
✨ That maybe we didn’t have to spend the rest of our lives stuck in traffic.
✨ That maybe, just maybe, we could build a life with more freedom, more family time and the occasional midweek beach swim and caravan adventure without having to apply for leave.

We didn’t have investors. We didn’t have a business plan. We didn’t have a clue what the heck we were doing.

But we did have:

  • Curiosity
  • Determination
  • A brand-new baby
  • And a blender that would never quite smell the same again

So, we did what any slightly sleep-deprived couple with a dream would do…

We started a skincare brand from our loungeroom.

Happy Skincare was born.

The early days were gloriously messy

If you’ve ever had a newborn, you know that life quickly becomes chaotic.

Now add mixing balms, designing labels and packing orders into the mix and you’ve got peak DIY startup energy.

Our kitchen became the lab.

The dining table became a packing station.

The loungeroom turned into a cardboard obstacle course.

We poured, labelled, packed and Googled our way through web design.

We once sent out a full batch of face masks with the wrong lids 🙂

Customers picked up orders from our front porch while we rocked a baby on one hip.

And somehow… it worked.

People felt the love in every jar. They kept coming back for more!

Markets would sell out. Word spread fast. Mates told mates. Small stores started asking to stock us.

And our little homemade skincare side hustle started growing roots.

Enter: The Armpit Era

As Happy Skincare grew, we noticed something funny.

Customers were loving the creams and balms…

But they kept asking: “Do you make deodorant?”

Natural deodorant was having a moment. But most of it just didn’t cut it. It was either:
❌ Too irritating
❌ Too weak
❌ Too expensive
❌ Or smelled like a medicinal lemongrass candle

Aaron, a self-proclaimed sweaty human with VERY sensitive skin, had tried them all. And none could survive Aussie humidity. He was either rashy, red or smelling like a lemony foot.

So, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work, sniffing armpits, tweaking formulas and learning more about bicarb skin reactions than any couple should.

There were disasters.

There were very questionable scent combos.

There were moments of what on earth are we doing?!

But eventually… we cracked the code.

Woohoo Body was born. 🎉

From loungeroom chaos to full-blown fun factory

Fast forward to today, and we’re still that same family-run Aussie biz, just with a few more helping hands and a whole lot more natural formulas.

Aaron now has a fancy cosmetic chemist certification, which means every single Woohoo formula is backed by real science. Each one is bursting with plant-based goodness and crafted to be ridiculously good for your pits and bits (we even create hair products now too!).

We made the decision to bring it all under one joyful umbrella: Happy Skincare became Woohoo Body, so everything now lives side by side. Deodorant. Skincare. Haircare. Bodycare. Natural and made with love.

Our HQ has moved out of the house and into a proper little fun factory in Newcastle, complete with mixers bigger than a Thermomix and a team of absolute legends from all walks of life.

But the heart of it all is the same.

💛 Believe small businesses can do big things

We never wanted to be a big “beauty brand.” That world never fit.

What we do want (and still believe in deeply) are:

  • Products that actually work
  • Ingredients that are kind to your body and the planet
  • A business that supports our family and gives back
  • A community of incredible humans who care about what they put on their skin (and pits)

And you know what? We think we’re onto something.

We’ve now got 15,000+ verified website reviews. We’ve won a stack of awards. We’ve donated heftily to charity. And over half a million armpits have tried Woohoo natural deodorants!

What’s next?

Honestly? We have no idea. And we kind of love that.

We built this business from scratch — baby carrier, blender, dog and all (plus one extra kid along the way). And we’re still growing.

There are more products to make. More pits to protect. More people to welcome into the Woohoo crew.

So the next time you use one of our products, take a second to remember: you’re supporting a little family, a dream and a big ol’ heart that started in a Newcastle loungeroom.

Thanks for being part of it, choosing natural and keeping this fun-filled world of ours chugging along.

We are SO grateful for you!!!!
