How science, policy, and consumer shifts shaped a transformative year in cosmetics
Welcome to our Year-in-Review podcast episode where we explore the seismic changes that reshaped the global beauty and personal care industry throughout 2025. In a landscape defined by rapid technological advancement, policy reform, and evolving consumer values, our expert guests—Amarjit SahotaFounder of Ecovia Intelligenceand Maggie SpicerFounder of Source Beauty—join host Siobhan Murphy to unpack the critical forces that are setting the stage for 2026.
Key Themes That Defined Beauty in 2025
Sustainability Becomes Non-Negotiable
Environmental concerns such as carbon footprint, plastic pollutionand biodiversity loss remained top of mind for both consumers and regulators. With inflation and the cost-of-living crisis squeezing purchasing power, brands had to deliver affordable sustainability—value-aligned offerings that meet performance expectations without greenwashing.
Scope 3 emissions reporting became the new norm, driven by ingredient suppliers offering life cycle analysis data. Meanwhile, refillables, bioplasticsand waterless formats solidified their place in packaging innovation pipelines.
Biotech and AI Go Mainstream
From precision fermentation to plant cell technologybiotech reached commercial scale—powering novel actives and alternatives to ingredients like palm and coconut oil.
Artificial Intelligence reshaped:
Formulation development via platforms like Covalo and PotionAI
Personalized beauty through generative tools like Perfect Corp’s SkinGPT
Supply chain transparencyenhancing risk management and resilience
Regulation Tightens – and Fragments
This year marked a shift from voluntary sustainability to regulatory obligation.
While the Green Claims Directive was delayed, its intention signaled a hardening stance on greenwashing and eco-label proliferation.
In the US:
State-led frameworks drove enforcement in the absence of federal policy:
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) took full effect in multiple states, demanding granular packaging data
Patchwork legislation around clean beauty, ingredient transparencyand marketing claims created compliance headaches but also revealed opportunities for operational efficiency and brand trust-building
Supply Chain Resilience: A Strategic Imperative
Tech-enabled upstream visibility helped brands of all sizes identify risks related to:
Geopolitical instability
Climate-vulnerable sourcing regions
Packaging costs and tariffs
Maggie Spicer emphasized that this visibility is now as much about business survival as it is about compliance.
What’s Next in 2026?
Consolidation Over Acceleration
With a year of disruption behind, 2026 is shaping up as a year of consolidationwhere beauty companies will:
Refine packaging design with recyclability and compostability front of mind
Move beyond carbon to embrace nature-based solutions and biodiversity storytelling
Double down on trust-buildingas consumers demand clearer proof of purpose and performance
A Divided Path Ahead
Europe is doubling down on green regulationwhile the US sees a regulatory pullback under current political leadership. The result? A growing divergence in sustainability standards and reporting norms—placing a premium on agility and localized compliance.

If you’re looking for a brighter way to diminish skin discoloration such as dark spots, hyperpigmentation, melasma, or even just to amp up your dull complexion, there’s an under-the-radar hero ingredient that’s about to seriously revolutionize your skincare ritual. Step forward alpha arbutin – nature’s answer to an Instagram filter. This powerhouse ingredient effectively treats pigmentation issues and boosts brightness safely without the unwanted side effects of its former counterpart, hydroquinone. Nature-approved, dermatologist-recommended, alpha arbutin is beauty’s best kept brightening secret and we’re here to spill.
What Is Alpha Arbutin?
“Alpha arbutin is a natural brightening agent found in the bearberry plant,” explains Dr. Nina Desai, Board-Certified Medical and Cosmetic Dermatologist. “It inhibits the function of the enzyme tyrosinase, which prevents the formation of melanin. It’s known as the natural hydroquinone. Hydroquinone itself is a bleaching agent, but alpha arbutin is a much more gentle and safe alternative. It functions similarly due to its molecular structure, but without that irritation or toxicity. ” she adds.
What Are The Benefits Of Alpha Arbutin?
Most of us will experience dull or lackluster skin at some point—and alpha arbutin provides a radiant boost for that, but it’s so much more than just a quick-fix brightener. For more lasting skin damage such as acne marks, brown or dark spots, and general sun damage, by inhibiting the formation of melanin, alpha arbutin essentially helps fade these marks, and also prevent them too.
“It’s incredibly effective in working to brighten hyperpigmentation and dark spots,” Dr. Nina shares. “I love to recommend it to my patients with any pigmentation issue, including melasma which can manifest as very splotchy, uneven skin. Alpha arbutin can really help diminish that distinctive pigmentation, and of course, when used in partnership with SPF, help prevent it from recurring.”
How To Use Alpha Arbutin
The great thing about this ingredient is that it’s suitable for all skin types – even sensitive, and it’s a safe brightening option for darker skin too. “It doesn’t negatively interact with other ingredients so it’s well tolerated with various other products in your routine,” shares Dr. Nina.
“One of my favorite products is the Hydra-Bright Alpha Arbutin Drops. A serum provides the perfect delivery system for this powerhouse ingredient, and these drops really allow for personalization and precision of dosage – from applying full-strength across the complexion, or for spot-treating areas of concern,” she notes.
Hydra-Bright Alpha Arbutin Drops are also infused with another brightening hero – azelaic acid to clarify and unclog pores and ensure all that good stuff is delivered deep within, plus nourishing niacinamide. Vegan lactic acid also gives a gentle exfoliating boost, for a complete treatment serum that improves tone, texture, and hits the light-switch on your natural radiance.
And, if you’re truly dedicated to that all-around lit-from-within luminosity, these drops work beautifully with skin that’s prepped by the Hydra-Bright Pro 5 Liquid Exfoliant. This exfoliating elixir effectively passes that glow-giving baton onto perfectly primed skin. Then, complete your brighten and glow ritual with our Hydra-Bright AHA Hydrator – a next-generation moisturizer that really pops that brightness button, while getting to work deep within.
Our seven solution serums – including Hydra-Bright Alpha Arbutin Drops, are crafted to play well together too. A power-pairing for brightness and antioxidant protection would be with our vitamin C-infused C-Shield Anti-Pollution Drops.
“As always, make sure you’re wearing a daily SPF – such as Oil Free SPF 40+, to really avoid any further sun damage, and to keep your skin protected all year round,” adds Dr. Nina.
If we all aspired to be a Girlboss ten years ago, the new mindset is to be That Girl. You know, not your average girl, but the one that has it all together. Both physically and mentally. She is the one with a solid morning routine, a healthy diet consisting of acai bowls and oat milk lattes, a dreamy self care routine (#SkincareGoals) and an aesthetic perspective of life others strive for.
She sets personal goals and holds herself accountable since she is trying to create the best version of herself. And what makes her so alluring is that girl…could be you. If you are willing to put yourself first.
This trend has been all over Tiktok and becoming “that girl” will look a bit different for everyone depending on your personal goals but we can all safely say after quarantining that it doesn’t hurt to spend some time focusing on our physical and mental health.
If you need that extra motivation to get out of bed, here are some “that girl” selfcare tips to get you started on growing into the best version of yourself.
Have a consistent sleep schedule
Rise and shine, it’s time to get up, get dressed and make the bed. Avoid hitting the snooze button so you can be a productive queen. The morning is a great time to make a to do list or journal your thoughts so you are more attuned with your emotions before hopping onto your laptop to reply to emails or getting pulled into scrolling through social media.
The 5 Minute Journal is a great way to start off the day by practicing positivity and finding what sparks your joy before entering the daily grind.
Move your body
Hit the gym or go for a walk in your cutest matching workout set. Moving will get you motivated to start off the day with lots of drive and energy. Whether you are jogging, doing yoga or just dancing in your living room to your favorite song, doing some stretches and getting your blood pumping can allow you to focus on your goals.
Stock up on nutrient dense food
Savor your breakfast. Snack on some dried fruit or nuts throughout the day to keep your energy levels up and avoid reaching for sugary snacks . Opt for cooking your own meals rather than ordering in so you know what ingredients are being used. Try Emily Mariko’s salmon rice bowl recipe. Embrace slow eating. Taste. Savor every bite.
Do your selfcare routine
This is going to look different for everyone, whether it’s decompressing with a hot bath, applying a sheet mask, or even just doing your hair care routine and taking some selfies with your Luxy hair extensions. Staying in all day lounging on the couch? Perfect your cute and cozy look with a clip in bun and our cozy Wander sweater. If you’re going out, finish the look with one of our ponytail extensions to feel powerful and in charge.
When you feel good, you’ll feel more motivated to get things done.
Clean your space and keep it minimal
Having a clean environment can have such a positive effect on your mood and well being. Wipe away the dirt and grime, and start off with a clean slate. Throw out anything that you no longer use to keep your space clutter free.
Buy The Flowers
This is your sacred space. Buy the flowers. The chocolates. The whole damn cake. There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself once in a while and doing something just for you. The trip to the farmer’s market will be worth it and you’ll have something beautiful to look at all day whether you are relaxing or WFH.
Nourish your mind
Stop scrolling on your phone and pick up a book or listen to a podcast instead to lower your screen time and allow for your mind to go deeper. There’s nothing like getting immersed in a storyline and exercising your imagination for a while.
If you’re looking for self development books we recommend reading Atomic Habits and Becoming Supernatural to give yourself that extra boost of motivation.
Visualize your goals
Keep a physical vision board (or one on Pinterest) of what you want your life to look like in the present and in the future. This helps you focus on your goals and pinpoint the steps on how to get to your destination. Let’s focus on what we can change and not dwell on the past.

Have you ever brought home something new, full of excitement, only to realise a week later that you are wearing it in exactly the same way every single time?
Caroline sent through a similar question, and it is something I hear often: Why do I keep styling new pieces the same way, even when I want more variety?
It is a very human pattern. Our brains love the familiar. When an item only seems to match one combination, we reach for that combination repeatedly. The good news is that this is completely solvable, and it begins long before you even reach the wardrobe.
Start Planning Before You Buy to Get More Outfits from Fewer Garments
Before adding anything new to your wardrobe, pause for a moment and ask yourself:
Can I name four or five garments I already own that this could be worn with to create a variety of outfits?
Does it work with my current colour palette?
Is it filling a wardrobe gap?
Does it work for my lifestyle?
Does it fit with my Style Recipe?
Do I love it and rate it an 8 or more?
Does it work for my current body?
Is it a clone of something you already own? If yes, is that garment heavily worn and wearing out, and you desperately need a replacement for it?
If the answer is no to any of the above, the item is likely to become a one-outfit wonder, or a garment that you don’t wear because it doesn’t work in some way for your body or life. Or potentially, an orphan that doesn’t work with anything else you already own.
It will sit there looking pretty, but it will not earn its keep. When something only matches one existing piece, your brain simply has no other options to reach for, so of course it ends up styled the same way again and again.
This is why working with a colour palette is such an invaluable tool. When you buy something in a colour that truly harmonises with your palette, it naturally blends with the rest of your wardrobe. The colours already relate to each other, which means they play well together with less effort from you.
Often, the pieces that feel tricky or limiting are the ones that sit outside your palette. They might be beautiful, but if they only link to one outfit, they are never going to support the creativity or flexibility you want.
Give yourself permission to experiment.
Even with a harmonised wardrobe, creativity only happens through curiosity. Once that new garment is home, spend a few minutes experimenting.
Try it on:
With different colours
Different bottoms or tops
With different garment layers
Different levels of refinement – dressy, smart casual, casual… does it work for all or just one of these?
Ask yourself: What else could this work with that I have not tried yet?
When your colours support each other, this becomes so much easier. Instead of staring blankly at your wardrobe, you begin to see possibilities. A top that worked with one pair of trousers might also pair beautifully with a skirt you had not considered. A jacket might match more dresses than you expected.
The more you play, the more confident you become in your own ability to create outfits that feel like you.
Why Style Education Matters
Many women tell me they feel overwhelmed with colour, shape and proportion. They wonder if they are getting it right or if they are wasting money on pieces that never feel quite like them. The truth is, we were never taught any of this. Without education, you are left guessing:
Are these the right colours?
Is this the right shape?
Is this neckline too wide or too high?
Why does this outfit feel slightly off, even though I like all the pieces?
When you understand colour, shape, line, proportion and scale, everything shifts. Your wardrobe starts to work with you, not against you. You get dressed faster. You make better decisions. You stop buying clothes you never wear.
This is exactly why I created the 7 Steps to Style program. It is the education you never received and the system you need if you want clarity, confidence and a wardrobe that genuinely supports who you are now. Yes, you can absolutely DIY your style journey, but it usually takes longer, involves more trial and error, and comes with more frustration. Having expert support simply speeds up the process and removes so much uncertainty.
If you are ready to understand what truly works for you and to create more outfits with less effort, I would love to welcome you into the program.
As my quest for something of a Viking look continues my beard game is now up to levels where daily care is required to keep both the skin underneath moisturised but also the beard itself conditioned and looking tidy. Nobody wants to look as though they slept in a bush, even if they did. It wasn’t until last year that I dipped my toe into the water of beard brushes. My Kent BRD2 brush however seems to have gone and done a disappearing act while waiting for me to regain my mane. I needed a new brush (I turn into a compulsive brusher once fully bearded) – step forward the Beard & Moustache Brush Travel Kit from Marbeian.
I picked up this set of beard grooming goodness from Amazon for just under £15, so a real steal, particularly when you consider that you get two brushes and a comb within the kit. You can pick up the kits here.
So, they are reasonably priced, but is it just tat off Amazon? Well, no.
I’d never heard of Marbeian before, so I did a little look around to see who they were and it turns out to be a family run venture from Spain stocking a range of hairbrushes and grooming tools. Their website here gives the lowdown on the products they have to offer for all your grooming needs. Their customer promise is:
‘Our promise is a happy customer who gets only superior quality products. Marbeian products don’t have to be replaced often – some ever! We offer a lifetime guarantee on many products. Style and workmanship last time making Marbeian a sustainable choice. Please consider nature and reduce waste.’
All beard brushes from Marbeian are made using boar hair bristles and the beard brush here is a real corker – the bristles have the rigidity to plough through a thick beard but they also ease out tangles and knots like a hot knife through butter. Resembling more of a boot polish brush the wooden handle makes it perfect for use in either my left or right hand.
If I had to pick up one flaw with the angled bristles on my Kent BRD2 brush it was that I could only use it with my right hand making brushing the left hand side of my face awkward. With the Marbeian brush I have no such problems.
The smaller brush is also a star in it’s own right – it makes ‘tache shaping so much easier and means you don’t have to get your hands messy with beard oil or balm when moulding into shape for the day.
Last up is the wooden ‘tache comb – excellent at de-tangling the old tea strainer prior to trimming.
All of the items in the kit are really well made, and with the cotton carry bag these are perfect for slotting into my travel bag when I’m off out and about around the country with work. I’ve had these brushes for just under six months and I get the feeling that as long as I don’t leave them in a hotel somewhere they will still be working their boar bristle magic on my bearded face in many years to come.
When you look at the price and look at the goods it’s a no-brainer to have this kit in your grooming arsenal.

Nikki DeLoach, one of Hallmark’s most cherished leading ladies (she’s starred in more than 20 movies and counting), returns to Countdown to Christmas in A Grand Ole Opry Christmas—a first-ever collaboration with the iconic venue for its 100th anniversary. Featuring original music by Brad Paisley and co-starring Kristoffer Polaha, the film follows a woman confronting long-buried memories as she returns to the stage that shaped her family’s legacy.
Off-screen, DeLoach is just as committed to giving back as she is to her craft. After Children’s Hospital Los Angeles saved her youngest son, she served as President of its Foundation Board of Trustees and now co-chairs a $1.25 billion campaign supporting the hospital’s mission to provide world-class care to children everywhere—a cause she even designed a custom charm bracelet to support. Her advocacy extends beyond pediatric care, too: she honors her late father through her work with Mind What Matters, serving on its board and co-hosting its caregiving podcast, and she is a Celebrity Champion for the Alzheimer’s Association.
In the midst of it all—and fresh off the Hallmark float for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, DeLoach found a moment to sit down with us to talk beauty, balance and the season that always brings her home.

What are you most excited about as we roll into the holiday season with your shows? The world loves a good Hallmark movie.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever been more excited for one of my Hallmark movies to air than I am with A Grand Ole Opry Christmas. It was a dream come true for me as a young girl growing up in the South, knowing about the Grand Ole Opry, loving country music and all the legends who grace its stage. It was such a meaningful place to my father and me. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine getting to be a part of something like this.”
I’m not sure how you have time to do all this but, in addition to all of the above, you’re also very involved with the Alzheimer’s Association. How do you have time for all of these really great causes?
“That’s a really great question! I don’t have an assistant. That would probably help a lot. I feel like I never get through my to-do list in a day. What I have learned is that perfectionism is boring. It’s also unattainable. I just wake up every day and do the best with what’s in front of me. The good news is that everything I’m part of and getting to do is so purpose-driven for me. It’s intentional. Being of service in the world brings so much joy and happiness to my life.
I do believe that is literally our point of being here. I will ask people sometimes, ‘What do you think the purpose is of you being in this life and being here on earth? You get that look where people are like, ‘I never really thought about that.’ I’m encouraging people to think about that because I think the idea of being here in this one precious life. Moving through it with the mindset of ‘I’m just here to take everything that I can, get everything that I can and then leave the world.’ What an empty way to move through the world. You’re missing out on so much.
When it comes to finding energy, if what I’m doing feels purposeful, I can always find it. How do I know I’m not doing something that is—if something’s not aligned, I don’t have that drive. Then I’ll know that it’s probably something I should take off my plate.”
Can you tell us about the bracelet you designed for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles—and the larger initiative behind it?
“I launched a collaboration with Taylor and Carrie at Rain Jewelry. We came up with this design for a bracelet: a paperclip chain with a heart attached to it. You can get it in sterling silver or gold, and the proceeds go to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. It is part of a fundraising initiative, our largest to date, in honor of the hospital’s 125 years of history.
I’m the co-chair of this fundraising initiative. Part of what I’m seeking to do with these collaborations, which will be the first of many, is to really shine a light on female entrepreneurs with incredible products. And this is just the beginning of many. We call it the Benny Bracelet. The price point is so good, and it’s the perfect gift to give any daughter, niece, mom, sister or grandmother in your life this holiday season. Then you can know that you’re spending your dollars and giving back to such a great cause. I don’t think there’s any greater cause than creating hope and building healthier futures for children.”

I love that. You’ve been in this business for a while—I think I first heard about you in The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. Is there anything from the ’90s, beauty-wise, that you still use?
“I don’t know if there’s anything from the ’90s that I’m still using, but I will tell you this: I believe in a really good product. In terms of how I approach beauty, I give myself a lot of grace. This can be a struggle, but I’m trying to fully adopt that mindset. I’m not sure if you get like this, but you see your lines and your wrinkles, and it’s so hard not to be like, ‘Oh God, make them go away.’
So I’m trying to flip that to: ‘No, there’s a lot of life that I’ve lived.’ Every day that I get to be here, wrinkles or not, what a gift to be able to be with my children and my husband and my friends and be in this world and to make memories and have adventures. I’m trying to strike a balance between having that mindset and taking really good care of myself.
I do Botox. I started that a couple of years ago, and I was probably very late to the game. It all scared me a little bit, but I love it. Dr. Lancer is my dermatologist, and the only person I will see and allow to touch my face that way. I also use Dr. Lancer’s products. For anyone, especially as you age, you put that hydration mask he has on at night before you go to bed. It has literally saved my face, especially with all the traveling I do, working on sets and being in front of lights.
I also drink so much water. I really fight for my sleep. I’m not getting it in New York this week the way I would like because there are so many early call times. I have my kids with me, but I try to prioritize sleep like nobody’s business to get my eight hours. I move my body. I work out. I lift heavy weights. That has been one of the single biggest things that I have done to change my body and to give me longevity.”
You have a routine down!
“There’s more! In terms of hair. I love [COLOR] WOW. I have curly hair, and I straighten it. I use their anti-humidity spray. It is so good.
I also love Oribe, and I am obsessed with ELEVEN’s all-natural, vegan, incredible products. It’s out of Australia. I use their shampoos and conditioners and do hair-conditioning treatments and masks on my hair. I will literally put a hair conditioner on, go read a book and do bedtime with my kid and then rinse it out afterwards.
Another thing is mental health. We’re all struggling. The world is hard. It is not an easy place to be in right now, and you have got to wake up and look for the miracles, big and small, and fight for that joy in your life with every ounce of your being.
Take the time to meet up with girlfriends. Take the time. Dance; that’s something that brings me joy. I try to dance every single day. If I’m mad, I move my body. If I’m sad, I move my body. It moves out those feelings so that I can reset my nervous system and then say, ‘Okay, what’s next? What am I going to do about this if there’s something that can be done?’ These are all, you could say, yes, common sense, but things that we forget to do on a daily basis. Ladies, you are worth it. This is your one precious life. Give it all you’ve got in terms of taking care of yourself.
We talk about that a lot on Mind What Mattersour caregiving podcast. It’s the way caregivers, the lives that they have to live, what they have to do, and how we take care of ourselves as women, because I don’t know of a woman who’s not a caregiver in some way, shape, or form. I really care a lot about women and supporting women and them showing up for themselves and treating themselves the way they deserve to be treated.”
Great message for everyone. And great products, too.
“Yes. I hope so. Oh, wait. You know what? I just remembered something that I still use from the ’90s. Aquaphor! I never leave home without Aquaphor.”
When life gets hectic, nutrition often falls by the wayside. While one off-schedule week isn’t necessarily harmful to your long-term health, if you’ve got a functional gut disorder like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), slipping out of your usual eating routine could send you straight for a flare.
“A busy week might mean not a lot of time to prepare meals, an increase in trigger foods—which includes high-fat foods and alcohol for me—decreased sleep, and increased stress,” Liz McMahon, MPH, RDN, an IBS and gut health dietitian in Eagleville, Pennsylvania, tells SELF. There are several different types of IBS, including: IBS with constipation (IBS-C), IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D), and IBS with mixed bowel habits (IBS-M). And while each type presents differently, flare-ups across the board are often triggered by stress, thanks to the gut-brain connection.
“If you’re constantly in that ‘fight-or-flight’ mode, your digestive system becomes more reactive,” Chelsea McCallum, a dietitian and IBS specialist in Brisbane, Australia, tells SELF. “For some people, that means constipation, while for others it can cause bloating, gas, or even diarrhea.”
During a high-stress week, it’s important to steer clear of foods that could further amplify symptoms—and keep up with behaviors that support healthy digestion. “No single meal will make or break your symptoms, but consistent, nourishing habits built around fiber, movement, hydration, and stress management can make a big difference over time,” Jessie Wong, MAcc, RDN, LD, host of the IBS Nutrition Podcast, tells SELF.
Not sure what to make during a week when you’re low on time? We asked five registered dietitians who have IBS to share the quick meals they rely on to get through their busiest days.
1. Chia Pudding With Lactose-Free Yogurt
“When life gets busy, you often don’t give yourself enough time in the mornings to sit and have a proper bowel movement,” says McCallum. “This can make constipation worse, especially if you’re rushing out the door.” McCallum says she leans more toward IBS-C, so establishing a consistent morning routine and slowing down really matters for her.
If McCallum knows she’s headed into a packed week, she prepares a no-fuss chia pudding made with lactose-free yogurt. “I keep it super simple: I add 10 grams of chia seeds per 100 grams of yogurt.” She mixes it up right in the tub—no extra mess or meal prep containers required.
OK, so it might not be the most glamorous product in your skincare lineup, but did you know sunscreen is in fact the most important anti-aging product you can buy? Sun exposure or photo-aging is responsible for around 80-90% of visible signs of aging, but the good news is that this is actually preventable. By using sunscreen daily, you can shield your skin from harmful UV rays that cause premature aging and skin damage including fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, collagen depletion, loss of elasticity, and rough texture. And, with so many different sunscreens to choose from, finding one that you’ll use every day, that meshes well with your skin, and doesn’t irritate or cause breakouts is key to ensuring you keep good SPF habits. But before you go down a rabbit hole of sunscreen advice, we’ll let you into a big skincare secret, zinc oxide sunscreen is one of our all-time favorites.
“One of the most effective sunscreen ingredients that’s universally tolerated across all skin types and tones is zinc oxide,” explains Dr. Nina Desai, Board-Certified Dermatologist. “There are many benefits of zinc oxide. It blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays, and is both photostable and water-resistant, so it won’t break down in the sun or in water.”
What Is Zinc Oxide?
Zinc oxide in its various forms has been used in skincare products dating back centuries, but more recently is found in topical products for sensitive skin and babies—think diaper creams and calamine, thanks to its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties.
It’s a popular, well-researched ingredient in mineral makeup and physical sunscreens, often chosen for its soothing properties and gentle, skin-protective benefits.
Unlike chemical sunscreens which absorb into the skin, zinc oxide sunscreen sits on the surface, and deflects the sun’s rays, providing instant protection against any sun damage.
“Mineral or physical sunscreen works by laying on the surface of the skin and deflecting UV rays away from the skin. This action can be referred to as reflecting UV rays away from the skin like a mirror,” explains Anna De La Cruz, Glo’s Master Aesthetician. “There are only two FDA-approved mineral sunscreen ingredients: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. By laying on the surface of the skin, there is less potential for irritation, so mineral SPFs tend to be the go-to choice for sensitive skin.”
And, zinc oxide’s sun protection is robust. “It’s known as a broad-spectrum sunscreen so it has one of the broadest UVA coverages of all sunscreen ingredients available right now, plus UVB coverage,” adds Dr. Nina. “I love to recommend Oil-Free SPF 40+ to my patients, as it’s an excellent all-mineral, reef-safe, high factor daily sunscreen that contains both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for oil-free, high-factor sun protection.”
While zinc oxide is known for having a heavier, opaque, white texture which can make the skin look pale or ashy; “Many formulations now either use micronized technology to reduce the zinc oxide particle size, so it appears transparent when applied to the skin,” Anna explains. “In some formulations to help avoid any ashiness, it’s combined with a flexible, sheer tint for optimal application and a flawless finish. Our C-Shield Anti-Pollution Moisture Tint SPF 30 offers high-factor sun protection infused with vitamin C for extra antioxidant protection, plus a sheer, dewy, flexible tint, while Tinted Primer SPF 30 and Protecting Powder SPF 20 both contain zinc oxide sun protection and sheer tints, so you get all that protection and a little extra color boost too.”
Who Can Use Zinc Oxide Sunscreen?
Long story short; everyone. The benefits of zinc oxide sunscreen include being an excellent anti-inflammatory, so those with sensitive skin and more serious skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea can tolerate zinc oxide well. For a daily, pure-mineral SPF that’s super hydrating for dry and sensitive skin, you can’t go wrong with Oil-Free SPF 40+ as it contains all mineral, reef-safe ingredients, and hyaluronic acid for a boost of moisture. As it sits on the surface as a physical sun blocker, zinc oxide won’t clog pores or cause congestion, making it perfect for more acne-prone skin too.
Another key benefit of zinc oxide and physical sunscreens is for anyone who suffers from melasma or hyperpigmentation—both conditions that can be triggered or worsened by the heat and light of the sun’s rays. Unlike chemical sunscreens which work by absorbing into the skin where they convert the UV rays into heat, then release that heat from the skin, physical sunscreens block UV light from penetrating the skin without producing heat, so they won’t aggravate pigmentary issues or cause heat and redness within the skin.
Is Zinc Oxide Safe for All Skin Types? What You Should Know
Zinc oxide is one of the most well-tolerated topical ingredients in skincare. Gentle yet effective, it’s widely recommended for acne-prone, sensitive, or post-procedure skin due to its non-comedogenic and non-irritating nature. Unlike some chemical filters, zinc oxide sits on the skin’s surface, where it reflects UV rays without absorbing into the skin—reducing the risk of sensitivity or adverse effects.
At Glo Skin Beauty, we only use non-nano zinc oxide in our formulas, ensuring it remains safely on the skin without penetrating deeper layers. Our sunscreens are also reef-safe and formulated without harsh additives, making them a trusted alternative to traditional chemical creams.
Worried about white cast? Modern formulations use micronized zinc oxide, which blends smoothly and evenly—even on deeper skin tones, while still offering high-performance sun protection. Plus, its soothing properties support the healing process for compromised or irritated skin, making it a go-to for those managing acne or inflammation.
Dermatologist-approved and clinically tested, zinc oxide is a trusted ingredient with a proven track record. It is definitely safe for all skin types and powerful enough for everyday use.
When To Use Zinc Oxide Sunscreen
Every day, even indoors, even in winter. We’ll say it on repeat. Sun protection isn’t just for the beach, we’re exposed to the sun every day, whether we go outside or stay indoors. And, although the sun’s rays are weaker in winter, they can still cause skin damage and photo-aging. Find a zinc oxide sunscreen formulation that fits your skin’s needs, and apply every day to your face, and anywhere else the sun may reach such as hands, neck, décolleté.
Daily Protection That Does More
From breakouts to sensitivity, zinc oxide delivers calm, consistent protection with added healing benefits for your skin. Its gentle, barrier-forming action helps shield against harmful UV rays while avoiding the irritation that some chemical sunscreens can cause.
At Glo Skin Beauty, we believe sunscreen should support your skin, not just protect it. Our zinc oxide sunscreens are formulated with high-quality ingredients to help soothe, protect, and elevate your skincare routine. Trust in a daily solution that works with your skin’s needs—every time you use it.

This one, sweet word can serve as a term of endearment, conjure the taste of divine nectar on your tongue, and describe a very potent medicine, but not all honey is the same. You’ve probably heard of manuka honey, but do you know what makes it different and why it has become all the rage in the world of healing and wellness? It may be trendy stuff, but there’s impressive and emerging science behind it. Here’s what you should know about manuka honey, and what you can do with a jar of it at home.
What are the healing benefits of manuka honey?
Honey has been used for centuries to treat wounds, and we now know that it is naturally antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. There are at two main reasons for the antibacterial qualities of normal honey. First, it has a very high sugar concentration and a low pH, a combination that makes it difficult for bacteria to thrive. Second, when honey comes in contact with human skin or fluids, the higher pH and presence of sodium activate an enzyme in honey called glucose oxidase, which breaks down glucose and releases hydrogen peroxide. Isn’t that INSANE?? Hydrogen peroxide! The same stuff your mother poured on your cuts as a kid as you whimpered and watched it foam! So, when you apply honey to a cut or a scrape, the honey both disinfects the wound and protects it from infection. (I hope that is the coolest thing you’ve learned all week!!) Learn more about honey here!
What does manuka honey do?
Manuka honey, produced in New Zealand and Australia by bees that pollinate the manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), works a little differently. Back in the 1980s, Professor Peter Molan at Waikato University in New Zealand noticed that the local manuka honey seemed to have WAY more antibacterial activity than other honeyso he started investigating. What he discovered is that manuka honey is very high in a compound called methylglyoxal, which is one of the main factors responsible for its antibacterial potency.
Why should this matter to you? Well, if you’re interested in medicine, this stuff is mind-blowing (even to a physician like me). Research has now shown that active manuka honey can effectively inhibit the growth of almost all known human pathogens, including those becoming more resistant to antibioticslike Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Clostridium difficile. This has huge implications in wound-healing, especially because bacteria do not seem to develop resistance to manuka honey over time. Some studies even indicate that the use of manuka honey alongside traditional antibiotics may decrease the development of resistant strains, something we should all be considering! (Please tell me you’ve gotten rid of your antibacterial hand soap by now?)
In addition to wound-healing applications, manuka honey has the ability to penetrate biofilm, which is a protective layer formed by certain bacteria, and is difficult for most antibiotics to penetrate. Biofilms form on mucosal surfaces (like your esophagus or stomach), in wounds, on your teeth (making gingivitis harder to treat), and on implanted medical devices like mechanical heart valves. The science is very young in this area, but it’s ripe for exploration by forward-thinking researchers.
How to purchase manuka honey
Because not all manuka honey is high in methylglyoxal, a need for standardization arose. The Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association was established, and now provides a trademarked “UMF” rating system for manuka honey: in order for manuka honey to be considered “active”, it must have a UMF rating of 10 or greaterindicating a certain level of antibacterial activity. The higher the rating, the greater the activity.
When looking for a manuka honey to purchase, make sure you see a UMF rating or logo—it guarantees a pure, unadulterated product, and there are lots of manuka scammers out there! It’s expensive stuff, and the busy bees have to visit about four million flowers to make each kilogram of honey, so be sure to use it well and wisely. Here are some ways to use this incredible healer in your home.
How can I use manuka honey in my skincare routine?
Wash your face with manuka honey once a week. Use a teaspoon of honey on damp skin, and massage into your face and neck with clean hands. Remove with a clean, wet cloth.
Try a manuka honey mask once a month – apply two teaspoons of honey to freshly-washed skin and leave for 15 minutes. Wipe or rinse clean – you may not even need a moisturizer afterwards.
Heal your cracked lips with a dab of raw manuka, especially at bedtime (try not to lick it off). Or, of course, you can use our Lip Repair, which combines raw manuka honey with cupuacu butter and myrrh for incredible healing potency.
If you have cracks at the corners of your mouth (angular cheilitis), a Q-tip with tea tree oil at one end and manuka at the other works like a tiny magic wand—dab the tea tree oil first, and follow with the honey.
What are the health benefits of manuka honey?
Manuka honey in lukewarm water can be very soothing to an irritated throat. Gargle for 60 seconds and swallow, and do not eat or drink for 20 minutes afterwards.
Two teaspoons of manuka or buckwheat honey at bedtime can help suppress a cough overnight. Note: do not give raw honey to children under one year of age.
If you have heartburn, try drinking a tea made from fresh ginger root and manuka honey Wait for it to be lukewarm, and drink an hour before bedtime every night.
Apply a thin layer of manuka honey to cuts, scrapes, or superficial burns, and cover with a clean band-aid. Repeat 1-2 times per day until healed.
Because manuka honey is antibacterial and can penetrate biofilms, try using manuka honey with a bit of warm water as a mouthwash to improve your dental health, especially if you have periodontal disease.
Try oil-pulling with a combination of coconut oil and manuka honey. See if your dentist notices a difference on your next visit!
Last note: be sure you’re buying all of your honey from responsible suppliers who care about the health of the bees! Colony collapse is a frightening problem, and we need to do all we can to protect them and the critical work they do in the world.
