You’re Seeing PDRN Everywhere, But Its Best Use May Surprise You

PDRN may have a new claim to fame beyond its buzzy skin-care benefits. A new report suggests that polydeoxyribonucleotide, or PDRN (aka “salmon sperm”), plays a vital role in post-procedure skin recovery, potentially making it a game-changer for anyone recovering from lasers, microneedling or other in-office treatments.

“Applied topically on post-procedure skin, it can help accelerate recovery, reduce redness and support collagen remodeling,” says New York dermatologist Connie Yang, MD.

As in-office treatments grow more popular, post-procedure recovery has become a bigger focus in regenerative aesthetic medicine, and PDRN has been leading the charge. “Patients increasingly want treatments that deliver results while minimizing downtime, prolonged redness and disruption to daily life,” says New York dermatologist Dr. Shereen Teymour.

“In aesthetic medicine, we’re often creating controlled inflammation in the skin through procedures like lasers or microneedling to stimulate collagen remodeling,” explains Dr. Teymour. “The idea behind using PDRN post-procedure is to help optimize the recovery phase by supporting barrier repair, reducing inflammation and improving overall healing quality.” The result: faster recovery, less redness, improved hydration and better tolerance of more intensive treatments.

Though the report is promising—even suggesting that PDRN makes biological sense to support post-surgical recovery for patients who’ve undergone aesthetic surgery—the evidence base remains limited. The consumer buzz around “salmon sperm facials” and other topical PDRN products suggests that “the marketing is moving faster than the science in some areas,” says Dr. Teymour. “I think PDRN is an exciting adjunct in regenerative aesthetics, but we still need larger, standardized studies before making overly broad claims.”

In the meantime, speak to your dermatologist or provider to see if PDRN is right for your recovery plan.
