Let’s talk about the skincare product people love to skip: sunscreen.
I get it. Some people worry about “chemicals,” clogged pores, irritation, or whether SPF is really necessary every day. But here’s the truth: if your goal is healthier, brighter, younger looking skin, SPF is your number one anti-aging product.
You can invest in the best serums, peels, microneedling, enzymes, and corrective treatments, but if you are not protecting your skin from daily UV exposure, you are working against your results.
Why SPF Matters So Much
Sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to premature aging. UV rays break down collagen and elastin, trigger pigmentation, deepen lines, worsen redness, and can slow the healing of acne marks and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
That means SPF is not just for beach days. It is for driving, walking the dog, sitting near windows, running errands, and living life in Arizona.
Daily SPF helps protect against:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Brown spots and melasma
- Redness and inflammation
- Loss of firmness
- Uneven tone and texture
- Worsening acne marks
- Skin cancer risk
In short: SPF preserves your investment in your skin.
Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen: What’s the Difference?
There are two main categories of sunscreen: mineral and chemical.
Mineral sunscreenssometimes called physical sunscreens, use ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These sit on the skin and help reflect and scatter UV rays. Mineral SPF is often a great choice for sensitive, reactive, acne-prone, rosacea-prone, or post-treatment skin.
Chemical sunscreens use ingredients that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. These formulas are often lightweight, sheer, and easy to wear under makeup. Some people love them because they feel invisible on the skin.
Hybrid sunscreens combine both mineral and chemical filters to create elegant protection with a more cosmetically pleasing finish.
The best sunscreen is the one you will actually wear every day. If you hate the texture, smell, cast, or finish, you will not use it consistently. That is why finding the right formula matters.
“But I Don’t Want Chemicals…”
This is one of the biggest concerns I hear.
Here’s the thing: everything is chemistry. Water is a chemical. Vitamin C is a chemical. Zinc oxide is a chemical. The word “chemical” does not automatically mean harmful.
If you prefer a more mineral based option, that is completely valid. There are beautiful zinc-based SPFs that protect well and feel comfortable on the skin. But skipping sunscreen completely because of fear around ingredients can leave your skin more vulnerable to UV damage, pigmentation, collagen breakdown, and long-term skin health concerns.
It is not about fear. It is about informed choices.
How Long Is Sunscreen Good For?
Sunscreen does expire. If your bottle has an expiration date, follow it. If there is no expiration date listed, a good rule is to replace it after about one to two years.
That said, sunscreen can degrade faster if it is stored in heat, like in a hot car, gym bag, or pool bag. If your SPF smells strange, separates, changes texture, or looks different than it used to, toss it.
Your SPF only works if the formula is still stable.
How Often Should You Reapply?
For daily indoor wear, applying SPF in the morning may be enough if you are not sweating, outdoors, or exposed to much direct light.
But if you are outside, driving for long periods, swimming, sweating, hiking, gardening, or spending time in the sun, reapply every two hours.
Also reapply after:
- Swimming
- Sweating
- Towel drying
- Exercise
- Extended outdoor exposure
And remember: makeup with SPF is usually not enough on its own. It is a nice bonus, but it should not be your only sun protection.
Why Vitamin C + SPF Is a Power Couple
One of my favorite morning routines is vitamin C serum under sunscreen.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which means it helps defend the skin against free radical damage from UV exposure, pollution, and environmental stress. It can also support brighter looking skin, more even tone, and collagen health.
Think of it this way:
Vitamin C helps defend. SPF helps protect. Together, they make your morning routine stronger.
A simple morning routine could look like this:
- Cleanse
- Apply vitamin C serum
- Moisturize if needed
- Apply SPF
- Reapply when needed
My Favorite Professional SPF Options
At Incandescent Skin, I carry SPF options from SkinBetter Science, DMK, and Face Reality because different skins need different formulas.
- SkinBetter SPF is beautiful for clients who want advanced, elegant daily protection with a polished finish.
- DMK SPF is a great option for clients committed to skin revision and barrier-supportive routines.
- Face Reality SPF is ideal for acne-prone clients who need protection without pore-clogging ingredients.
If you have avoided sunscreen because you did not like how it felt in the past, that does not mean SPF is not for you. It usually means you have not found the right one yet.
Final Thought
Sunscreen is not just a summer product. It is not just for vacations. And it is not just about preventing a sunburn.
SPF is daily skin preservation.
If you are investing in your skin, treating pigmentation, managing acne marks, correcting texture, or simply wanting to age as gracefully as possible, sunscreen is non-negotiable.
Your future skin will thank you.
