Mandelic acid is the most underrated acid in skincare, full stop. Quiet part out loud: glycolic acid’s reign as the default chemical exfoliant is mostly habit, not superiority. Actually, could it be notoriety?

For as long as I can remember, chemical exfoliation has been synonymous with glycolic acid. It’s effective, no argument there, but a lot of us would actually see better results swapping in mandelic acid instead. Here’s my short list of reasons, starting with the Sofie Pavitt Mandelic Clearing Serum.

Mandelic Acid vs. Glycolic Acid: What’s the Difference?

Mandelic acid is part of the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) family, alongside glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, and citric acid. Its job is the same as any AHA: exfoliate the uppermost layer of dead skin cells, speed up cellular turnover, and leave skin brighter and smoother.

Where it splits from glycolic acid is molecule size. Mandelic acid, derived from bitter almonds, has a much larger molecular structure. That means it can’t penetrate as deeply, so its activity stays more surface-level and is far easier to tolerate. Translation: exfoliation without the redness or irritation glycolic can trigger, especially at higher concentrations. Yay.

How the Sofie Pavitt Mandelic Clearing Serum Works

First and foremost, the Mandelic Clearing Serum delivers gentle exfoliation suitable for daily use. And while it’s technically formulated for breakout-prone skin, it works just as well for anyone dealing with dullness, hyperpigmentation, or uneven texture. Even sensitive skin types can use it. It’s a genuinely well-formulated treatment and deserves your consideration.

What’s in the Mandelic Clearing Serum

Sophie Pavitt uses an 8% concentration of mandelic acid for optimal exfoliating performance. To keep that potency from tipping into irritation, the formula also includes glycerin, panthenol, and multiple forms of hyaluronic acid, buffering ingredients that round out the acid and keep the experience non-irritating.

How I Use It

The founder says the Mandelic Clearing Serum works for both AM and PM use. I stick to nighttime only, for two reasons. First, any leave-on exfoliating acid increases sun sensitivity, even under SPF. Second, while the serum is runny and absorbs well, it does feel “slightly present” on skin. Not a film, more like an invisible layer that does best with a night cream on top.

How I use the Sofie Pavitt mandelic acid serum

I use this every other night now, alternating with retinol (though you technically could use both in the same routine, AHA before vitamin A), followed by a thin layer of Hello Le Balm. Worth noting: the formula is unscented, another point in its favor.

Value, Results, and Where to Buy

At just under an ounce, this is a splurge, no way around it. It also requires patience. Slow, consistent exfoliation is how you get results here, this isn’t an overnight-transformation serum. Stick to every other night, build up to nightly if you want or need to, and use the full bottle before judging results. You’ll probably be repurchasing.
