4 Mobility Routines Every Runner Should Do After a Long Run

0

Experienced runners do more than just log miles. They sprinkle in strength-training and mobility work, and they also prioritize recovery. This is because the effort you put into your runs is only part of the equation. How you recover determines how your body responds to running. And in many cases, that recovery is most effective when it includes gentle movement, like mobility exercises, not simply just resting.

“Recovery isn’t just about stopping. It’s about how you support your body between efforts,” Jessica Leung, DPT, a Boston-based physical therapist, tells SELF. “While total rest days have their place, active recovery offers a more strategic approach. Low-intensity movement helps your body repair, reset, and come back stronger.”

And after a long run, your body craves stretching and mobility to counteract the high impact activity. So even if you feel like calling it a day after you finish that run, trust us, you don’t want to skip this part—and your body will thank you for it.

The difference between active recovery and rest

Sometimes, rest days can—and should—be just that, days with zero exercise at all on your schedule. You can take advantage of the time off to do something else that enhances your well-being, whether that’s catching up with a friend, reading that novel that’s been parked on your nightstand, or getting crafty and creative with a few new projects.

But in other cases, you might want to move a little in ways that feel good for your body and mind. Enter: active recovery, or gentle movement that’s a lot less intense than your typical workout. You might choose to take a (light!) yoga class, go for an easy walk, or spend some quality time with your foam roller.

Another option? A quick mobility routine. Amanda Katz, an NASM-certified personal trainer and running coach in New York City, designed the routines below as part of SELF’s Learn to Love Running Program to complement the strength and cardio workouts that make up the bulk of your plan. These dynamic routines were created to help link your mind and body, centering you so you’re ready to get back to running, lifting, or whatever other more intense activities are on your docket the next day.

Why recovery matters for runners of all levels

No matter if you’ve just started running, or you’re an experienced marathoner, recovery is essential for every runner. The goal here is to move at a slower pace than the rest of the week, gently boosting blood flow and allowing your body and nervous system to reset. A mobility routine takes your joints through a wide range of motion to improve functional movement in the joints you use every day. Runners who regularly work on their mobility may reduce pain and stiffness while also improving performance, Katz says. These sessions also offer an opportunity to notice—and address—any minor imbalances before they turn into pain or injuries. For example, if your right hip feels tighter than your left one in pigeon pose, you can spend a few extra minutes there for an added release.

How to listen to your body

Your body is constantly giving you feedback—you just have to pay attention. On days when you feel generally good but a little stiff or sluggish, light movement like walking or mobility work can help you loosen up and feel better. But if you’re dealing with sharp pain, lingering fatigue, poor sleep, or that heavy, run-down feeling that doesn’t go away with a warm-up, it’s a sign to pull back and opt for full rest instead.

Estée Lauder Appoints WPP as Global Media Agency

0

THE WHAT? Estée Lauder has appointed WPP as its global media agency, consolidating media responsibilities across its portfolio of brands.

THE DETAILS Under the partnership, WPP will oversee global media buying and strategy for Estée Lauder’s brands, including MAC, Clinique and the flagship Estée Lauder label. The agency was selected for its expertise in delivering innovative media solutions and its understanding of global market dynamics.

The appointment follows strong fiscal 2026 second-quarter results for Estée Lauder, with net sales rising 6% to US$4.2 billion. Gross margin increased to 76.5%, driven by benefits from the company’s Profit Recovery and Growth Plan (PRGP), though partly offset by tariffs, inflationary pressures and shifts in business mix. For the six months ending December 31, 2025, operating cash flow increased significantly to US$785 million, compared with US$387 million in the previous year.

THE WHY? The move supports Estée Lauder’s broader transformation strategy, “Beauty Reimagined,” aimed at strengthening operational efficiency, accelerating growth and improving marketing effectiveness across global markets.

Chappell Roan’s Faux Bob Is Peak Weird Art School Girl — See Photos

0

Chappell Roan exists on her own plane, uninterested in starting trends, even less interested in following them, but always creating a major beauty commotion with every public appearance. That said, her attendance at Paris Fashion Week’s Acne Studios show—the way she wore her famously fiery hair—suggests she may adhere to a few select of-the-moment aesthetics after all.

Roan was front row for Acne Studios’ fall/winter presentation, looking more than ready to walk the runway herself in a boned, lacy, gray, high-neck dress. But instead of her long, curly, auburn hair flowing over the details of the frock, it was tucked into a faux bob with a little curl sitting slightly off-center on her forehead.

It’s not entirely clear if hairstylist Lacy Redway hid her abundant hair up and underneath or stuffed it into the back of the dress, but if it was the latter, Roan would be exhibiting one of the biggest trends to emerge from the recent New York Fashion week runways: the hair tuck. Models at both 7 for All Mankind and Christian Siriano were seen with their hair pushed into high-neck garments.

The vibe also fully fits an emerging aesthetic: the weird art school girl.

Instagram and TikTok creator Elysia Berman has been singing the trend’s praises since late January. “I could not care less about serving quiet luxury. I wanna give thinker, poet, artist, lover, dreamer … I wanna see messy clothes, messy hair, messy nails—all symbols of a life well-lived,” she says, framing it as a pushback on AI’s lack of humanity. “I wanna see people who inspire me, people who aren’t afraid to be a little weird and be a little different.”

What Is a ‘Dopamine Detox’—and Do You Need One?

0

Spend enough time in the wellness sphere, and you’re sure to come across someone raving about the life-changing benefits of a “dopamine fast” or “dopamine detox.” The basic premise is that you cut out some or all quick hits of stimulation and pleasure—Instagram, junk food, YouTube, online shopping, phone games, Netflix—for a set period of time (a day, a week, a month) in order to “reset” your dopamine levels, cure your tech addiction, and enjoy the little things in life again.

It’s an appealing idea that makes some intuitive sense. After all, we know how crappy we feel after spending six hours on TikTok. And if you’ve ever taken an extended break from social media or your phone, for example, you’ve probably noticed that it feels pretty good.

But what does the science say? Can you actually detox from dopamine? Or is this just another biohacking trend that sounds cool—but makes scientists roll their eyes?

“I think it became really popular because it’s such a sexy term. But it’s really nonsense,” Stephanie Borgland, PhD, a professor and research chair in the departments of Physiology & Pharmacology and Psychiatry at the University of Calgary who studies the neurobiology of addiction, tells SELF. The problem? “Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in your brain, not a toxin,” Dr. Borgland explains. “So you can’t detox from it.”

That said, there is definitely something to cutting down on screen time. “Taking a break from social media or other highly stimulating activities can absolutely be beneficial,” Talia Lerner, PhD, an associate professor in the departments of Neuroscience and Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University, tells SELF. “But that is not a detox.” Here’s what this trend gets wrong—and right.

How dopamine works

First, a quick refresher on what dopamine does. While the neurotransmitter has a reputation for causing pleasure, “that’s actually a myth,” Dr. Borgland says. Dopamine plays a key role in things like learning, focus, mood, and—most crucially here—habits and motivation.

“Dopamine is really critical in making habits,” Dr. Borgland says. When a substance or behavior triggers the release of dopamine, that tells your brain, Hey, this is rewarding. Pay attention. It’s what teaches your brain to connect certain cues (like seeing a notification pop up or feeling bored) to getting what you want (a new Instagram like or relief from boredom), Dr. Borgland explains. “Then it helps you engage in motivated behavior to get those things that you desire.” (Like grabbing your phone.)

Best Complexion Products I Swear By

0

Sharing an updated base roundup today with my go-to favorites! I love testing new foundations, powers and concealers and lately I’ve been more into glow boosters and complexion enhancers.

Here’s what I’ve been loving. If you’re like me and find that your go-to foundations sometimes feel a little thick, heavy or don’t blend well I have some tricks and tips for you to try!

Foundation

Best Foundations Dior, Chanel, Armani and It Cosmetics

I like my foundation to look like skin but better, but I still need some coverage. I have a lot of sun spots and my skin is prone to redness so I look for formulas that have medium coverage to even out the skin.

Dior Forever Skin Perfect Foundation ($57, Nordstrom) is the best stick foundation I’ve tried. It blends easily, looks very natural, doesn’t feel heavy on the skin and I love the way it looks. The coverage is easy to control. I tried the hack of mixing this with the Rhode Glazing Milk and it is truly 10/10 worth trying. I mix shades as I’m usually in between Dior shades, I’ve tried 2.5N, 2W and 3N. Right now I mix one of the 2s with 3 for my perfect match. In action here.

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation ($69, Chanel) has been a go-to for so many years I’ve lost count of how many bottles I’ve repurchased. My best match is BD41 and this golden undertone match is the best skin match I’ve ever tried. Love that they have a good shade range and different undertone options. They most recently started adding BO which is more olive and they’re really good tones without being too green/sallow if that makes sense. This has natural glowy coverage, hydrates, is long-wearing and easy to blend.

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($69, Nordstrom and Sephora) in the new formula is tied with the Chanel. Comparing the two I think the new Armani formula feels a little bit lighter (thinner) and the coverage is just a bit sheerer but still medium and glowy. I wear Shade 6.5 in this formula. In action here.

It Cosmetics CC+ Nude Glow ($47, Sephora and Ulta) is the best CC cream I’ve tried. Most CC creams tend to be very thick and this is the thinnest one I’ve tried which makes it easier for my skin to breathe in humid weather. It’s still creamy and somewhat thick compared to other bases, but it’s like the skin tint version of a CC cream. Love that it has SPF 40. It’s perfect for every day, the beach, bike rides, pretty much any occasion.

Concealer

Best Concealer formulas YSL, Chanel, Natasha Denona

I’ve really been skipping concealer most days, but I still reach for it if I’m going to an event or a special night out. I love testing new formulas and I know a lot of you don’t like to wear a lot of face makeup but just a little bit of concealer on a tinted moisturizer.

Classics like NARS, Hourglass and Tarte are still incredible formulas, but these days I’ve been reaching for YSL, Chanel or Natasha Denona.

The YSL Touche Eclat ($40, Sephora) is still the best undereye brightening concealer. This works for me since I don’t have a lot of dark under eye circles. Sometimes I just want a little bit of brightening and I love the consistency of this one. I wear Shade 3.

Chanel launched a new concealer formula recently called the Ultra Le Teint Correcteur Concealer ($53, Chanel) and this is the first Chanel concealer that has worked for me. I love their foundations but I’ve never really liked their concealers. This one is thin but easy to blend. I tried a few different shades and I like B40 or BD41 the best. For concealers I tend to like them a little more peachy or neutral for eyes. This runs very similar to the Prada formula but I have a slight preference for the Chanel because of the color match on me. You can see it in action here.

Natasha Denona Hy-Glam ($32, Sephora) is the best full coverage creamy concealer that I can wear under the eyes or to spot conceal. It’s creamy, blends well, doesn’t cake and long wearing. 10/10 love this.

Complexion Enhancers/Glow Boosters

Best Glow Boosters

I used to think mixing glow products wasn’t necessary for me. These days sometimes a foundation might feel too heavy or thick. Or sometimes my skin is extra dry and foundation doesn’t blend like it should but at the same time I don’t want a heavier moisturizer underneath. I’ve found some incredible complexion mixers or glow boosters.

Armani Fluid Sheer ($43, Nordstrom) is a classic. I don’t really use these as a highlighter as they’re too sheer once blended. I prefer to mix them with a foundation and I love Shade 10 because it’s golden but sheer. It adds a really nice glow to the skin. The only downside is it’s incredibly pricey to mix in with foundation on a regular basis.

One/Size Base Thinner ($36, Sephora) is a recent discovery in the Bronze Pearl shade and I am 100% obsessed. I love the shade and way it adds the perfect amount of glow to the skin. It mixes really well with foundations and the glow is perfect. Not too shimmery, not too emollient, not too sheer – just perfect. I really want to try the Pink Pearl formula too. Skin looks fresh and radiant without being over the top.

L’Oreal True Match Lumi Glotion ($17.99, Ulta) is a classic and budget friendly. Love that they have different shades. I’ve tried multiple and love them. It’s a really great multi-tasker. You can wear it as a primer under foundation, mix it with your base or use it on top to add a little bit of glow.

Saie Glowy Super Gel ($29, Sephora) is another great multi-purpose illuminator. I’ve tried this a number of ways but my favorite way to wear this is mixing it with foundation. I really love this mixed with the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. I’ve tried all the shades and Roseglow is my favorite. I think this is the best for dry skin but it’s not heavy. It has a slightly transparent quality to it with the gel formula which I love.

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter ($50, Sephora) is the OG glow booster. There are so many dupes of this, some are very good, but I have to give a shout out to the original innovator. Love this and I still think it’s worth the splurge. If you think this is too shimmery for you I also really love her Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint Foundation Stick as an alternative.

Sarah Creal Today’s Highlights Peptide Balm Luminizer ($55, Sephora and Sarah Creal) is my favorite cream highlighter of the moment. I know so many of you love the dewy highlighters like ones from Westman Atelier, Chanel and Merit etc. I love the look of so many of these but because I’ve always lived somewhere warm – a few hours of wear time = greasy mess. The Sarah Creal one is more natural looking but the formula is elite! It gives that lit from within glow.

BEst Cream Highlighter

Rhode Glazing Milk ($20-32, Sephora and Rhode) is 10/10 a must for dry skin. I don’t think you need super dry skin to use it. I love this mixed with foundations to help them blend better on the skin whenever they look or feel too heavy.

Best Essence Rhode Glazing Milk

Contour/Bronzer

After all these years of trying makeup I have to admit I’m still not into contouring. I prefer a subtle cream bronzer with a little bit of warmth as cool tones tend to clash with my skin tone. These are the most natural looking ones I’ve tried.

Best Cream Bronzers

Makeup By Mario SoftSculpt Transforming Skin Enhancer ($34, Sephora) is my favorite cream bronzer that has an emollient texture and sheer finish. I think it’s a little too creamy to wear on its own so I usually set with a powder blush or bronzer, but I love this to add warmth to the skin. I’ve tried both Medium and Medium Dark. Swatches here.

Merit Bronze Balm Sheer Sculpting Bronzer ($32, Sephora) is the best for super dry skin or if you want something super sheer or balmy. It does pull very sheer once blended but I like the warmth and super natural look it gives the skin.

Dior Forever Skin Bronze Bronzing Stick Balm ($52, Nordstrom) is another great skin-like bronzer. This is probably my favorite bronzing stick that still looks very natural on the skin. I can wear 02, 03 or 04 – I think the shades are pretty easy to wear. It has a satiny finish that looks like skin. I really love that this is a non-dewy option that isn’t too matte. Swatches here.

Powder

Best Setting Powder Laura Mercier

Last but not least a quick shoutout to my go-to setting powder right now. I used to be a pressed powder person, but the past few years I’ve almost exclusively used the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powders ($26-$48, Nordstrom) with a puff. The lasting power is much better with a powder and I think hers are the best for looking natural.

Tools

Quick shoutout for my favorite foundation brushes. I love the ones from It Cosmetics, Hourglass, Fenty, Laura Mercier. For concealer I swear by the ones from Hourglass and Real Techniques.

That wraps up my favorites right now! What are you go-to favorites?

Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Stick: Coverage, Ingredients, Suitability

0

If you want a breathable, comfy, all-day foundation stick that treats your skin as well as it tints, bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick delivers. This mineral-powered, hydrating foundation stick pairs skin-care-first ingredients with a radiant, natural finish that looks like real skin—only smoother and more even. It’s dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic, and fragrance-free, making it one of the best foundation sticks for sensitive skin and everyday wear. With quick, mess-free application and light buildable coverage, it outperforms heavier sticks and liquids that can feel occlusive, look flat, or require multiple products to achieve the same soft-focus glow.

Unique Benefits of Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Stick

Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick sets itself apart with a skin-loving, mineral-rich blend—magnesium-rich minerals to help balance and comfort skin, antioxidant acai palm to support a healthy barrier and to increase hydration, calcium carbonate helps absorb excess oil, soft-focus silica to diffuse the look of texture, and light-reflecting mica for a subtle, lit-from-within radiance. Vitamin E is integrated as an anti-oxidant for anti-inflammatory and to protect against environmental stressors. The result is hydrating, natural-looking coverage that feels weightless and looks fresh from first swipe to final blend. It’s sheer and buildable, so you control coverage without caking. The solid, twist-up design is fast, precise, tsa-approved and spill-proof—ideal for quick mornings and on-the-go touch-ups, per the brand’s official product details (see bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick).

Formula and Skin Health Advantages

BareMinerals formulates with skin health front and center: no parabens, talc, or synthetic fragrances, and every shade is dermatologist tested. The stick is non-comedogenic and fragrance-free, so it won’t clog pores or irritate sensitive complexions—qualities that make it a reliable foundation stick for daily wear.

Magnesium carbonate is a mineral ingredient known for its ability to help support skin hydration and barrier function while assisting with gentle oil balance. Its lightweight, non-occlusive nature makes it a friendly option for sensitive or acne-prone skin types that need comfort without congestion.

In brand testing, the formula is clinically shown to smooth, soothe, and protect skin while you wear it—so your complexion looks better instantly and over time. It’s especially well-suited to sensitive, normal, dry, and combination skin. For acne-prone users, the non-comedogenic, fragrance-free profile is a smart choice; non-comedogenic products are formulated to avoid clogging pores—an important safeguard for breakout-prone skin.

Coverage and Finish Compared to Other Foundations

This buildable coverage foundation stick delivers sheer-to-medium coverage that blurs imperfections without masking skin. The finish is dewy and glowy—never greasy—with a soft-focus effect that remains fresh when set strategically. Where many matte or full-coverage bases can look heavy or emphasize texture, Complexion Rescue maintains a hydrated, skin-like sheen that’s ideal for modern, minimal makeup looks.

Comparison at a glance:

  • Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick: light buildable; luminous, fresh finish; comfortable, breathable feel; long-wearing when set.
  • Traditional liquid foundation: often medium-to-full coverage; finish varies (satin/matte/dewy); may feel heavier and require more steps to look seamless.
  • Powder foundation: lightweight with quick application; typically satin-to-matte; can cling to dry patches.
  • Typical matte stick foundation: medium-to-full coverage; matte finish; can read heavier, particularly on dry or textured areas.

Suitability for Different Skin Types

  • Dry or normal skin: The very moisturizing formula glides over parched patches and blends seamlessly, delivering a healthy, hydrated glow.
  • Combination or oily skin: Apply sparingly in oil-prone zones and set the T-zone with a fine mineral powder to balance sheen. In high heat or humidity, plan for a midday blot or light touch-up to maintain freshness.
  • Sensitive or acne-prone skin: Dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic, and fragrance-free makes this a gentle choice for daily use. Non-comedogenic products are formulated to avoid clogging pores, making them safer for breakout-prone skin.
  • Mature skin: The luminous, flexible finish softens the look of fine lines without settling, and the hydrating texture helps skin appear smoother and more supple.

Application and Wear Longevity

Use the brand’s simple method—SWIPE. BLEND. REPEAT.

  • Prep: Start with skincare and, if desired, a hydrating or blurring primer where needed.
  • Swipe: Draw a few strokes across forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin.
  • Blend: Use a dense brush for the fastest polish or fingertips for a quick, second-skin melt.
  • Repeat: Add thin layers only where you want more coverage.
  • Set: Lightly dust mineral powder on the T-zone; finish with setting spray for extra longevity.

Expect comfortable, all-day wear when you set smartly: a fine powder in oil-prone areas and a mist to lock in glow. For oily skin or hot, humid days, carry blot papers and plan quick touch-ups; the water-, sweat-, and humidity-resistant performance improves when properly set, but like any dewy formula, extreme conditions can require a refresh.

Shade Range and Color Matching Options

Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick comes in an inclusive 20-shade range spanning warm, cool, and neutral undertones. For your best match, use the brand’s online shade-finder tools and undertone guides, and cross-reference your shade in other Complexion Rescue textures to dial in a seamless match. Virtual consultations and the shade chart can further fine-tune your selection.

Portability and Convenience for On-the-Go Use

This is the definition of streamlined beauty: a solid, twist-up stick that’s quick, precise, and spill-proof—great for on-the-go touch-ups. It slips easily into a purse, travel kit, or gym bag and eliminates liquid leaks. This skin tint is tsa-approved! Blend with fingertips for effortless results anywhere; add a brush or sponge only if you’re after an ultra-airbrushed finish.

Comparison with Leading Competitor Foundations

Unlike many matte or full-coverage sticks and traditional silicone-based liquids, Complexion Rescue Luminous Skin Tint Stick prioritizes skin health and comfort: a hydrating, clean, mineral-powered base with skincare benefits, a luminous finish, and non-comedogenic, dermatologist-tested assurance for daily, long-term wear.

I Thought I Was Just Gassy and Bloated. It Turns Out I Was Bleeding From My Ovary

0

The time was 11 p.m.

I tossed and turned in discomfort, while trying to fall asleep after intimacy. A sharp pain swirled around my lower belly, but I thought it was only gas from the beans and a beer I had for dinner that night with my boyfriend.

An hour later, my snooze was disrupted by what felt exactly like the beginning of a vasovagal syncope episode, a type of fainting I suffer from during blood draws or sitting up too fast. Vasovagal syncope is common and generally harmless, but it’s an indication that the body is under some sort of stress.

Everything felt all too familiar: the lightheadedness, cold sweats, a violent urge to vomit… But this time, there was no obvious trigger.

I knew immediately something was very wrong, somewhere I couldn’t see or directly feel. My body quickly confirmed my hypothesis, as I fainted again within mere minutes.

Two fainting episodes back-to-back. That had never happened before.

“Call an ambulance,” I told my boyfriend when I regained consciousness. I struggled to even speak, barely coherent after throwing up and with my clammy fingers still clasping onto the trash can rim.

Two EMTs arrived 10 minutes later and swiftly hauled me onto a stretcher. The ambulance roared through empty streets, bypassed every red light, and I burst into tears (of confusion and fear). The medics rolled me into my local ER.

Multiple blood tests and 108 pelvis, transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound images later, my ER doctor informed me of a possible ovarian cyst rupture.

Immediately, I pictured something grotesque: a tumor, an abnormal growth, a meatball Frankenstein. I was 24 years old and excessively health-conscious; how did I not know this was growing inside me, let alone it had burst?

Turns out, I probably couldn’t have known anyway.

Like an erupted, angry pimple

“Ovarian cysts are generally collections of fluid that form like a pocket within the ovary,” Kelsey Kossl, MD, a gynecologic surgeon at NYU Langone Health, tells SELF.

Although sharing the same term “cyst” with Dr. Pimple Popper’s gnarly, gushy specialty, ovarian cysts mostly refer to naturally occurring follicles, or, in Dr. Kossl’s words, “little houses for our eggs.”

Every month, our ovaries grow 15 to 20 tiny follicles, one of which becomes dominant and can grow to two or three centimeters as part of its natural role in the menstrual cycle, per Dr. Kossl.

Bellabeautebar Dark Dreamscape Palette Review by indie makeup expert Cordelia Frost. Swatches and looks included for makeup inspiration

Hello beautiful people! Today I’m sharing my Bellabeautebar Dark Dreamscape Palette Review. I purchased this palette in October 2025 for $78 and have been obsessed with it ever since! Bellabeautebar has my number when it comes to most of their eyeshadow palette color stories. I’ve fallen hard for BBB. This detailed review also contains swatches and four looks for makeup inspiration.

Bellabeautebar Dark Dreamscape Palette Review

Inside the Dark Dreamscape PaletteInside the Dark Dreamscape Palette

Dark Dreamscape is a 20 pan magnetic palette. It has 11 buttery mattes, 1 shimmer, 2 holo chromes, and 6 multichromes.

Pricing

The USA price point of $78 for 20 shadows in the Dark Dreamscape palette breaks down to $3.90 per shadow. The €75,50 for 20 shadows breaks down to €3,78 per shadow. I consider that very affordable for high quality eyeshadows, especially special shades like multichromes and holo chromes.

Just to compare, Natasha Denona Scarab Chromium Liquid Eyeshadow (a gold yellow blue multichrome) is $28, About Face Holographic eye paints are $19, Urban Decay 24/7 Glaze-on liquid eyeshadows are $26, Urban decay 24/7 Moondusts are $25, and the KVD Dazzle Gels are $24. There really aren’t equivalent single eyeshadows for sale in more mainstream stores like Ulta and Sephora at a competitive price point, everything is much more expensive in my experience.

Eyeshadow Formula

Bellabeautebar Dark Dreamscape Indie Makeup Palette Bellabeautebar Dark Dreamscape Indie Makeup Palette

Bellabeautebar describes their matte formula as buttery. I know that word can be divisive in the beauty community. How I describe the matte formula is that it is buildable and blendable. It spreads easily and you can build it up or blend it with another shadow.

The shimmer formula is one of those that I find applies best with your finger tips or a silicone brush for the most impact. While all the swatches in this post were done with finger tips on bare skin, the colors perform their best on eyeshadow primer. For the extra shimmery or glittery shades, I like to use Karla Fix Potion to help them have the most impact. Previously I used to use Urban Decay All Nighter Spray or a Glitter Glue for special shades.

The longevity I have on primer with these shadows is fantastic. I’ve fallen asleep in my eyeshadow once or twice, which is terrible for your skin, and had my eyeshadow remain intact with no creasing or fading. As someone who used to have hooded eyes and now has deepset eyes, eyeshadow primer is a must for me. My lids get oily, but primer keeps the oilies at bay and lets the eyeshadow last all day.

I swatched the Bellabeautebar Dark Dreamscape Palette on bare skin in my living room.

I did my best to capture the multichromes and holo chromes in my video that shows the swatches in movement.

Questions I’ve Been Asked about Bellabeautebar

Below are questions I’ve been asked directly about Bellabeautebar from you!

Is Bellabeautebar cruelty free and vegan?

Is Bellabeautebar cruelty free and vegan? Yes, Bellabeautebar is cruelty free and most products are vegan. This palette is vegan.

Where can you buy Bellabeautebar in Europe?

Where can you buy Bellabeautebar in Europe? Monolith EU is where you can purchase Bellabeautebar in Europe. I am unsure of other retailers, but there may be others.

How does Dark Dreamscape compare to other Bellabeautebar palettes?

How does Dark Dreamscape compare to other BBB palettes? Dark Dreamscape is more cool toned than Dead Roses, Recently Deinfluenced, and Basic Witch. It’s more purple heavy than Ocean Jewel, which leans more blue. And obviously it’s more colorful than my favorite cool toned neutral palette Morally Grey. Dark Dreamscape shares the buildable, blendable, excellent pigmentation for the mattes that the other palettes have. It also has a stunning shimmer formula so that the multichromes are impactful.

Is the Dark Dreamscape palette good for beginners?

Is the Dark Dreamscape palette good for beginners? In my opinion, yes. You can literally apply the mattes and shimmers with your fingers and still create an impactful look.

How do you make multichromes pop?

How do you make multichromes pop? I prefer to apply them with my fingertips (I was against using my fingertips for a long time because of my long nails) or a silicone brush over eyeshadow primer. A glitter glue like Karla Fix Potion or fixing spray like Karla Mist Potion (both of which I own and use) also intensifies them.

Does Dark Dreamscape work on fair skin?

Does Dark Dreamscape work on fair skin? Yes! My skin tone is very fair neutral cool. The pastel mattes and cool toned shades are especially flattering on very fair neutral and cool skintones.

Is Dark Dreamscape good for deepset eyes?

Is Dark Dreamscape good for deepset eyes? Yes, the matte-heavy formula is ideal on my deepset. Eyeshadow primer is recommended to prevent creasing, just like I recommend to all my hooded eye friends, though honestly, I think everyone benefits from eyeshadow primer.

Is Dark Dreamscape worth the price?

Is Dark Dreamscape worth the price? At $3.90 per shade including multichromes and holo chromes, it’s significantly more affordable than comparable individual specialty shadows at mainstream retailers, or even from some indies who can charge $15-20 for special shades.

What eye looks can I create with Dark Dreamscape?

What eye looks can I create with Dark Dreamscape? The palette is versatile enough for pastel goth, purple smoky eyes, cool toned cut creases, icy teal looks, pink and orange editorial looks, dark smoky looks, cool toned purple, warm toned purple, blackened red, so many different options!

Final Thoughts

So who is the Bellabeautebar Dark Dreamscape Palette for? If you love pastel goth makeup, purple makeup, cool toned makeup, eyeshadow that wears all day, this palette is for you. Skip if you’re into neutrals, don’t love to wear cool tones, and don’t like shimmer. Additionally, this palette looks amazing on very fair neutral skin like mine, but it is equally stunning on medium and deep skintones. Bellabeautebar provides swatches on light, medium, and deep skintones on their website.

I love that over half the shades are matte, as I prefer matte heavy palettes to flatter my deepset eyes. But you can pry the shimmer shades out of my cold dead hands, because I love them to be the star of the show.

Part of what has kept me from purchasing either the all pink or all purple palettes from Bellabeautebar is that I have so many lovely colors of both hues in my current BBB palette collection.

In my opinion, this is the pastel goth palette of my dreams because of the wonderful color story. Use my code CORDELIA to save 10% if you shop at Bellabeautebar. They are Phyrra approved!

Bone Broth Protein vs Collagen Peptides: A Complete Comparison

0

I have found some of the highest quality bone broth proteins and collagen peptides!

Collagen peptides. Bone broth protein. If you spend any time in the wellness world, you’ve heard both tossed around as if they’re interchangeable. But are they actually the same thing? Since both make regular appearances in my own kitchen, I figured it was time to look past the buzzwords and unpack what each one really is and what benefits they actually offer.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a connective tissue protein. Think of it as the scaffolding material for skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and connective tissue. Collagen is made of the amino acids glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline.

How is collagen powder made?

Collagen powder is typically made from bovine hide or fish skin or scales. Connective tissues are rich in type 1 and sometimes type III collagen. Collagen powder is made by extracting collagen from these connective tissues, then enzymatically hydrolyzing the powder into smaller peptides.

Benefits of Collagen

Supports skin elasticity

According to a systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal Nutrients, hydrolyzed collagen was found to improve skin hydration and elasticity. In another randomized controlled trial, collagen improved skin elasticity in women aged 35-55 over 8 weeks of daily use.

Supports joint pain and osteoarthritis

Collagen supplementation has been shown to reduce activity-related joint pain in athletes according to the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Supports Bone Mineral Density

In a randomized controlled trial in the Journal Nutrients, collagen peptides taken daily for 12 months in postmenopausal women was shown to increase bone mineral density and support positive bone markers.

Supports nail growth

Collagen taken daily for 24 weeks can also improve nail health and growth according to the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

Drawbacks of Collagen

  • Collagen is not a complete protein. It lacks tryptophan and is very low in essential amino acids so it should not be relied upon for muscle-building or post-workout recovery.
  • Collagen is low in leucine. Leucine triggers muscle protein synthesis and does not stimulate muscle protein synthesis effectively on its own.
  • Collagen can vary in quality. Heavy metal contamination can be an issue in poorly sourced products especially in marine-sourced collagen.
Bone broth protein has been such an easy and nutritious addition to my daily wellness routine!

What is bone broth protein?

Bone broth protein is basically dehydrated bone broth. When the water is removed, it leaves behind protein-rich, collagen-derived amino acids.

How is bone broth protein made?

Bone broth protein is made by simmering animal bones and connective tissue for 24 hours or more, then concentrating and drying the liquid into a powder. The broth is filtered removing fat and bones and the liquid is reduced to increase protein density. It is then spray-dried into powder form. Many times flavor is added to improve the taste.

What nutrients are in bone broth protein?

Bone broth protein contains the amino acids, glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and sometimes small amounts of arginine and glutamine.

Bone broth protein also contains some collagen/gelatin.

Mineral content varies widely and is often present in modest amounts, but calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus are the minerals most typically found in bone broth protein.

Bone broth protein can also contain glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid.

Benefits of bone broth protein

Supports tendon and connective tissue collagen synthesis

A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming 15g of gelatin or collagen with vitamin C prior to exercise increases collagen synthesis markers. These markers are indicators of new collagen production.

Supports gut barrier

While human clinical trials are somewhat limited, there is mechanistic evidence that glycine and gelatin support intestinal barrier integrity. Animal studies have demonstrated that glycine can protect the intestinal barrier and reduce inflammatory markers.

Supports sleep

Bone broth protein contains glycine which has been show to improve sleep quality in individuals with mild sleep complaints. The study in Sleep and Biological Rhythms used 3g of glycine before bed.

Drawbacks of bone broth protein

  • Bone broth is not a complete protein. Just like collagen, bone broth protein lacks tryptophan and is low in amino acids.
  • Bone broth is low in leucine which means it won’t stimulate muscle growth.
  • Bone broth can contain heavy metals especially lead so it’s important to look for brands that undergo third party testing.

Flavor Neutral; dissolves easily in coffee, smoothies Savory/umami flavor unless a flavor is added.
Best Use Cases Coffee, smoothies, baking, protein boosting Soups, savory recipes, or as a sipping broth
Texture Very smooth, dissolves easily Slightly thicker; may clump if not mixed well
Ideal For Skin, hair, nails, joint support, gut health Traditional nourishment, whole-food appeal, supports connective tissue collagen synthesis, sleep, gut barrier

Best Bone Broth Proteins

*I am picky about the brands that I use and recommend.  The ones that I do recommend don’t have fillers or additives in them.  Many bone broth/collagen powders have added fillers- make sure and read your label!

Paleovalley Bone Broth Protein

Cost: $59.99

Review: This was the first bone broth protein powder I used and I still love it!  I love how Paleo Valley goes the extra mile in all that they do.  They use the actual bones, not skin like many brands.  When you’re just sourcing from the skin you are missing out on so many nutrients!  They use grass-fed, pasture raised beef bones, so you’re getting the best of the best.  Many brands will claim grass-fed, but they are not 100% grass-fed like Paleo Valley.  Paleo Valley even takes it a step further stating that the bones from their cattle they use are never fed GMOs- or any grains or pesticides. The bones are also slow simmered, so you’re getting the most extraction. I love that they don’t use chemicals or solvents for extraction, just slow simmering and filtered water. They even test for over 40 contaminants!

I love their chocolate, vanilla and salted caramel.  I use the chocolate the most I’ve found.  It works so well in any warm drink.  You can make a nutrient dense bone broth protein hot chocolate with it- so tasty!  I’ll just do hot water, but you can also add a milk of your choice. I use my electric frother to blend it up. I love putting a scoop in my coffee for a mocha feel without the sugar or dairy.  It also works so well in baked goods!  I will add it to brownies, cookies, overnight oats- really anything you want to add a little nutrients too!

The vanilla is great in baked goods and smoothies.  The salted caramel is good mixed with the chocolate for a clean salted hot chocolate.  I also like the powder in baked goods.  The list is really endless on how you can use them!  I will say that the Salted Caramel is the one that can taste a little more artificial if you are sensitive to that taste because of the monk fruit in them that is used to sweeten.  It’s not bad, and I don’t notice it as much when I mix the chocolate with the salted caramel.  I also don’t notice it at all in the chocolate.  But wanted to make a note of that because I have had people ask me about that. Get it here.

Just Ingredients Bone Broth Protein Powder

Price: $39.95

Review: This was my newest bone broth protein discovery.  Just Ingredients came out with their bone broth protein recently and I knew I wanted to try it.  It’s definitely very creamy!  I’m thinking it might be because of the MCT Oil that is added to it.

I have only tried the snickerdoodle flavor but it’s delicious!  I add it to my coffee and it makes it taste like a Starbucks cinnamon dolce latte from back in the day- not sure they even have that flavor anymore! My electric frother blends and mixes it in so well. But regardless, snickerdoodle is yummy!  I haven’t tried baking with it yet, but I imagine if would be really good.  I love that Just Ingredients third party tests their products for impurities.  They also only sweeten with monk fruit.  I want to try their french vanilla and chocolate as well!  I think this flavor would also be really great as a Ninja Creami Flavor. Get it here. Also, use code: GURLGONEGREEN for 10% off.

Taylor Dukes Wellness Bone Broth Protein

Price: $59.99

Review: I have loved all the Taylor Dukes Wellness products I’ve tried and her bone broth protein is no exception!  I love that she tests all her products and is strict with her ingredients.  The bone broth protein is sweetened with organic monk fruit.  I’ve tried her peppermint bone broth protein, chocolate, vanilla and pumpkin spice and you can’t go wrong with any of them.  My personal favorite is mixing the peppermint with the chocolate in my coffee- the perfect peppermint mocha without the sugar!  I use her bone broth protein just like the other bone broth proteins- in baked goods, overnight oats, smoothies- so many options.  Get her products here!  Also, use code: GURLGONEGREEN for 10% off.

Best Collagen Peptides

Lineage Provisions Grass-fed Nose To Tail Collagen

Price: $59

Review: This one feels like a traditional collagen powder.  It’s a lot smoother in texture and easily blends into anything.  I love so many of Lineage Provisions products and their collagen is no exception.  They go above and beyond in their sourcing.  Their collagen comes from regeneratively raised grass-fed cattle, it also includes scapula, trachea and eggshell for a true nose to tail product.  They enhance their product with Vitamin C and sea salt for better absorption. It doesn’t have a taste- really neutral overall.  There are no fillers or gums- just clean collagen!

I love how easy this one is to add to any type of drink, soup, baked good.  You can’t taste it and like I said that texture is so smooth that it easily dissolves. I like that it includes type I, II, and III collagen.  Most collagens only include type I.  They also test for heavy metals and contaminants.  It’s next level collagen! Get it here. Use code: SUZI for 15% off.

Conclusion: Is collagen or bone broth protein better?

I prefer bone broth protein because it’s a food first option for increasing collagen intake. However, if you prefer a more calculated and perhaps a less flavorful approach to collagen, then collagen peptides might be the better option for you.

9 Best Peel-Off Face Masks for Clear, Smooth Skin

0

Frequently Asked Questions

Are peel-off face masks okay for your skin?

Short answer: Yes, peel-off masks can be great, but a little caution goes a long way—especially if you have sensitive skin. “These masks exfoliate the skin when they are peeled off. That means there is always the potential to over-exfoliate the skin, which can disrupt the skin barrier and cause dryness and irritation,” explains Hadley King, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. The antidote to irritation is using these formulas somewhat sparingly—ideally only once a week, according to King. “The tolerability will depend on your skin and the formulation,” she adds.

As usual, pay attention to the back of the bottle (or tube or jar). “Always check the ingredients and follow up with a gentle moisturizer to keep your skin happy,” adds Mona Gohara, MD, a Connecticut-based board-certified dermatologist. She also flags polyvinyl alcohol as a potential irritant in peel-off masks, which could be the culprit if you experience adverse effects.

Despite these considerations, there are plenty of benefits. Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, told Allure that face masks exist to “deliver high concentrations of active ingredients to your skin,” making them ideal for quick, thorough refreshes. David Kim, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Idriss Dermatology in NYC, echoed Dr. Zeichner, telling Allure that masks are valuable, but only when used intermittently. “Generally speaking, masks are used intermittently to help give your skin a boost when it needs it,” Dr. Kim said.

How do peel-off face masks work?

“Peel-off masks stick to the top layer of your skin, lifting away dirt, oil, and dead cells when removed,” says Dr. Gohara. “Think of it as a quick surface clean—but be gentle to avoid damaging your skin.” And sort of like a blackhead-yanking nose strip, the peel might yield some interesting residue. “You never know what you are going to get when you peel off, which is fun for curious skin nerds, like me.” According to Dr. King, it’s the film-forming polymers that allow for the consistency.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best peel-off masks, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, formula, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the “best” for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
