How to Be More Social As an Introvert, According to Experts

0

Wanting to be more social or outgoing sounds deceptively simple: Just talk to more people, say yes to every invite, and strike up friendly conversations with strangers, right? But for introverts, putting yourself out there is easier said than done.

The good news is, being introverted isn’t a fixed personality trait. “Most people aren’t full introverts or extroverts,” Amy Morin, LCSW, a psychotherapist and author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Dotells SELF. “They’re ambiverts, meaning they can do and enjoy both.” In other words, becoming “more extroverted” doesn’t necessarily mean changing who you are—it’s about going out of your comfort zone and finding a social rhythm that energizes rather than exhausts you. Here’s how to start.

1. Redefine “extroversion” on your own terms.

“People often assume extroverts have to be the life of the party—that they’re the funniest, loudest people in the room,” Morin says. “But this can sound unrealistic for many introverts who prefer to have less attention on themselves.”

So instead of expecting yourself to suddenly thrive in large crowds or enjoy back-to-back plans, socialize in more realistic ways. Maybe that involves grabbing lunch with a handful of coworkers instead of joining a noisy happy hour. Or joining a book club, running group, or French class—an environment where you can meet people while doing something you actually enjoy.

2. Be the one who reaches out first.

Don’t just wait for invitations to come your way—make them yourself. Part of being more extroverted, Morin says, is taking initiative rather than hanging back and letting others set the tone. Ask a friend to join you for a walk on a slow Sunday. Organize that Friendsgiving potluck instead of hoping someone else will. Every time you initiate, you get more comfortable taking social risks, and eventually, you’ll notice how often that little moment of courage pays off.

3. Don’t underestimate the power of social media.

“We’re all encouraged to network more. But for someone who’s really introverted, the idea of going to a giant event can be really daunting,” Fanny Tristan, LCSW, a psychotherapist and founder of Restority Space in New York City, tells SELF. Luckily, though, there are ways to put yourself out there without diving straight into a crowded room of strangers—and that includes starting online.

“Even emailing someone first to set up coffee chats, whether in person or over Zoom, lets you meet your goal of having conversations with more people,” Tristan says. Starting digitally gives you a chance to ease in—no small talk or awkward glances required. And remember: Just because it’s virtual doesn’t make it any less meaningful.

4. Plan ahead for when small talk runs dry.

Part of what makes putting yourself out there so nerve-wracking is the fear of awkward moments, which can happen when you’re socializing with someone new. In these situations, Morin recommends coming prepared with a few interesting, go-to topics that feel stimulating to you.

2025 Skincare Trends – 6 Predictions from a Celebrity Esthetician

0

While social media (especially TikTok) is a great tool for spotting trends, they can come and go so quickly, hence why it’s called a “trend”. I prefer to rely on other sources, like information I’m hearing from my skincare labs and trusted chemists, as well as all of the conferences I attended this past year where the best and brightest skincare professionals gather to share information.

Based on what I’ve been seeing, here are six 2025 skincare trends I expect to be big. While there are some new innovations – everything always returns to the basics. Keeping the skin balanced, healthy and nourished.

Skincare Trend #1: At-Home Skin Care Devices

Gone are the days when professional results were only provided by estheticians like me. So much of the technology is now available for home use and I think it’s very, very exciting. After all, I see clients for 90 minutes, and while we can achieve a lot, to be able to recommend a home care device for them to keep the results going only improves their skincare goals.

Of course, there are a lot of questionable at-home skin care devices out there, so you have to do your research. I highly recommend the TheraFace Depuffing Wand. I used a device similar to this on my clients for years and I was devastated when they discontinued it, so I was so happy to see that this came to market. I love it for de-puffing aspects to do along with lymphatic drainage massage on the face. (Rapid Response Detox Masque makes for a great glide when applied before using the device.)

I mentioned TheraFace in this video I posted on Instagram as one of the devices I use on my client, singer Sabrina Carpenter, and the video went viral! (I also mentioned my the high-frequency device, which is tried-and-true and always works well for making breakouts go away fast.)

I’m also a huge fan of NuFace, known as microcurrent. It’s used for building facial features such as more prominent cheekbones by exercising the muscles. As mentioned in this post, I have used NuFace for years, and I also use a similar technology on my body during my workouts. Simply put, muscles get weaker as we age and it’s important to strengthen them. I love using it in my nightly routine.

Skincare Trend #2: Electrolytes – The Ultimate Hydration For Thirsty Skin Cells

I love the concept of tapping into things that are used for internal use, externally. And electrolytes for skin will be big in 2025.

Let’s talk hydration. The reality is, ALL skin types require water – not all skin types need oil. This is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin. Skin cells are like fish and need water to live so an even bigger focus in 2025 will be more innovation in skincare ingredients to get the skin to retain the water it desperately needs to stay healthy-looking and of course, oh so dewy.

A big skincare ingredient you’ll see in 2025 is electrolytes. They contain essential minerals like sodium, calcium and potassium. They’ve been a mainstay in sports drinks forever, but now they are making their way into topical products.

The main benefit of using electrolytes in skincare is hydration. Water is good for skin, but dry skin (which tends to worsen with age) struggles to retain it. Without enough oil to trap moisture, water from serums and moisturizers often evaporates quickly. Electrolytes help by using their electrical charge to draw water into deeper skin layers, preventing evaporation. They also balance water content, keeping skin plump, fresh, and dewy without overloading it.

I’m working on a skincare formula that contains electrolytes and the results are really incredible for delivering water to thirsty skin cells. Stay tuned!

Skincare Trend #3: A More Simple, Multi-Tasking Skincare Routine

Skincare is a huge industry and shows no signs of slowing down but I have to say, the 10-step routines have gotten a little out of control. For example, using multiple serums layering one over one another is not only time-consuming and costly, but it’s not even that effective.

The reality is that your skin can only absorb so much, so I stick to the belief that you should just use one serum at a time. Plus, this approach not only saves time and money but also reduces the risk of irritation from overloading the skin with too many active ingredients.

I’m seeing that people are exhausted with the thought of having to use so many products so a simpler routine with just a few products is what people are looking for. The good news is that so many products can multitask.

For example, why use sunscreen AND a separate moisturizer? How about just finding one that can do both? My Weightless Protection SPF 30 does just that. Or how about a masque that you can sleep in overnight? Yep, that’s my award-winning Rest Day Masque.

A four-step routine, used morning and night, includes:

  • Wash with a gentle cleanser (always following my Golden Minute Rule)
  • Follow with a toner (here are five benefits from a toner)
  • Serum (day is always vitamin C, and at night, you can alternate your serums in the evenings with either retinol, a leave-on acid exfoliant, or something for hydrating and delivering nourishing benefits)
  • Moisturizer (during the day, it’s always sunscreen, and at night, choose the best moisturizer for your skin type)

morning skincare routine

Ex: Simple morning Action Plan for Skin Type 7

For extra credit, a lightweight eye gel or nourishing cream can be used morning and night then weekly, perform an at-home facial.

These steps are tried-and-true and will absolutely maintain the health and integrity of your skin. Quality over quantity. Always.

Skincare Trend #4: Exosomes – A Bio-Tech Skincare Ingredient

At the Science of Skincare Summit (a dermatology conference that I was a co-chair of), there was a lot of talk about the term “biotech ingredients” and they are set to play a crucial role in the future of skincare. Specifically, there was a lot of chatter around exosomes for skin care treatment.

Exosomes are derived from stem cells, with the most common sources being fat stem cells and umbilical stem cells, though there are other types. They are microscopic vesicles naturally produced by cells that serve as messengers to facilitate cell communication and regeneration. The purpose of these are to rejuvenate the skin to repair itself as they harness the body’s own cellular processes to enhance skin health.

Since cosmetic procedures like radiofrequency microneedling and laser treatments are so popular to stimulate cellular repair (by intentionally damaging the skin’s outer layers), the thought is that when exosomes are applied topically after these procedures, they can help support the repair processes, which in turn enhances the treatment to improve results – and lessens the redness and swelling that occurs.

We’ll see continued advancements in science to find ways to keep the skin looking younger, longer.

Skincare Trend #5: Making Skincare Playful

Who says skincare has to be so serious? TikTok skincare trends continue to show us that people love to have fun doing their skincare routines and love filming content about it. (Yes, this is where all of those 10-step routines come in!) Especially with the rise of the at-home skincare devices (with LED being a big one), people are using their devices paired with masques, serums and oils to give their skin the ultimate self-care treatments at home.

One way to play (with no worry of harming your skin) is toner ice cubes. There’s no rule that says toners have to be used in their liquid form, so how about freezing them to give additional skin benefits like de-puffing? Moisture Infusion Toner is perfect for this.

Skincare Trend #6: Turning Your Passion for Skincare into a Career – Become an Esthetician!

The rise of the esthetician. Yes, it’s happening in a big way. In fact, Allure calls the esthetician the new “IT” profession.” When I started in 1988, there were only a handful of us. Fast forward to 2025, and more people than ever are turning their passions into a career. As the saying goes, “find something you are passionate about and find a way to make a living doing it.”

I absolutely love seeing our profession being brought to the forefront and skincare enthusiasts are expanding into all areas of skincare – sales trainers, supporting dermatologists in their practices, instructors and more, and of course, having our own solo practices. We love improving lives through skincare, and it’s truly incredible to see how many people are entering this amazing profession.

2025 Skincare Trends – It’s Going to Be a Great Year for Skin!

While there are so many exciting things always on the horizon, these are some trends that are particularly exciting for me in 2025.

But let me leave you with this final thought: as much as it seems like there is a lot of innovation in skincare, the basic principles will always stand the test of time.

  • Wash your makeup off at night.
  • Wear sunscreen 365 days a year – even indoors since UV light comes through windows.
  • Keep a consistent morning and evening routine.
  • Use good quality products.
  • Learn about your unique skin’s needs and always use products for your skin type.
  • Always follow The Renee Way.

How to Determine Your Skin Type – skinfo

0

Determining your skin type is crucial for selecting the right skincare products and creating an effective skincare routine. Understanding your skin’s unique needs can help you choose products and treatments that enhance your skin’s health and appearance. The five main skin types are normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive, each requiring a specific approach to care.

Normal skin is well-balanced, with no excessive dryness or oiliness. It has a smooth texture, small pores, and an even tone. People with normal skin rarely experience sensitivity or breakouts. In contrast, oily skin produces excess sebum, leading to a shiny appearance, particularly in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). This skin type is prone to enlarged pores, blackheads, and acne.

Dry skin lacks sufficient moisture and natural oils. It often feels tight, rough, and may appear flaky or dull. Dry skin can be sensitive and prone to irritation and redness. Combination skin features both oily and dry areas. Typically, the T-zone is oily while the cheeks and other areas are dry or normal. This type requires a balanced skincare approach to address both concerns. Sensitive skin is prone to reactions such as redness, itching, burning, and dryness. It can be triggered by skincare products, environmental factors, or certain foods.

To accurately determine your skin type, start by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry. Avoid applying any products afterward to ensure you can observe your skin in its natural state. Wait for about an hour and then assess how your skin feels. This period allows your skin to return to its natural state without external influences. Gently press a blotting sheet on different areas of your face, such as the forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks. Hold the sheet up to the light to see how much oil is visible. For normal skin, there will be little to no oil on the blotting sheet. Oily skin will show significant oil on the blotting sheet, particularly from the T-zone. Dry skin will have no oil on the blotting sheet, and the skin may feel tight. Combination skin will show oil on the blotting sheet from the T-zone but not from other areas. Sensitive skin may not be determined solely by oil presence, but you should look for signs of redness, irritation, or reactions to the blotting sheet. Gently touch different areas of your face to assess texture and firmness. Normal skin will feel smooth and supple, oily skin greasy or slightly sticky, dry skin rough or flaky, and combination skin will vary between areas. Sensitive skin may feel rough, dry, or reactive.

Once you have identified your skin type, you can choose products and routines that suit your specific needs. Normal skin benefits from gentle cleansers, lightweight moisturizers, and regular exfoliation. Oily skin needs oil-free, non-comedogenic products and ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to control oil and prevent breakouts. Dry skin requires hydrating cleansers, rich moisturizers, and products containing hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Combination skin should use gentle, balancing products and target specific areas with appropriate treatments, such as mattifying products for the T-zone and hydrating products for dry areas. Sensitive skin requires hypoallergenic, fragrance-free products and should avoid harsh ingredients, favoring calming and soothing ingredients like aloe vera and chamomile.

Estée Lauder reports growth in Q1, driven by fragrance; sees recovery in China

0

After several months of weakened momentum, The Estée Lauder Companies reported stronger-than-expected sales for the first quarter of its fiscal year.

Sales for the period from July to September 2025 reached USD3.48 billion, representing a 4% rise from the prior year, the company said in a statement on Thursday, October 30. This figure surpassed analysts’ estimates of USD3.38 billion.

Perfumes drive growth

Fragrance net sales rose 14% year over year, driven by Tom Ford innovations — including the launches of Travel Oud and Black Orchid Reservefronted by Tilda Swinton — as well as strong performance from Jo Malone London’s colognes.

Skincare net sales increased 3%, whereas makeup sales declined 1% and haircare sales were down 7%.

Restart in China?

The company, which owns Clinique, The Ordinary, Kilian Paris, and M·A·C, had struggled in recent quarters amid weak consumer spending, especially in China. On this latter front, the group is seeing improvement.

In the first quarter of its fiscal year, The Estée Lauder Companies reported an 9% increase in sales in China compared to the same period last year, driven in part by strong performances from La Mer, Le Labo, and Tom Ford.

“Growth in Mainland China, primarily driven by innovation and existing products,” as well as “targeted expanded consumer reach” the company stated.

Furthermore, travel retail sales “showed an improvement over last year’s unfavorable trend,” said the company’s CEO, Stephne of the Faverieduring a call with investors.

Outlook

The group had also announced a restructuring plan in February, the final cost of which is expected to be between USD1.2 and USD1.6 billion before taxes. It also planned to eliminate 5,800 to 7,000 positions by the end of 2026.

“We had a strong start to fiscal 2026 (…), gaining prestige beauty share in a few key strategic areas of focus, and improving profitability,” highlighted from La Faverie. “These results reinforce the confidence we have in our fiscal 2026 outlook—a pivotal year—as we restore organic sales growth and expand our operating margin for the first time in four years,” he added.

For fiscal 2026, Estée Lauder continues to forecast a 2% to 5% increase in net profit per share. The company also warned that new trade tariffs could reduce future earnings by nearly USD100 million, but said it is closely monitoring trade policy changes and implementing measures to mitigate potential impacts.

“The Company has implemented a range of actions,” including “further optimizing its regional manufacturing footprint to bring production closer to the consumer,” the group added.

Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator Review

If you’ve been on the hunt for a gentle yet powerful treatment to help brighten, smooth, and refine your skin, the Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator might just be one to add to your list. I’ve been testing it out for a few weeks now, and I’m impressed with how refined and radiant my skin looks after each use.

This next-generation treatment peel promises all the glow without the irritation. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator?

What is Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator?
What is Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator?

The Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator is a multi-tasking exfoliating treatment designed to help even out skin texture, tackle breakouts, restore firmness, and brighten dull, uneven tone.

It’s formulated with a potent yet gentle 12.5% AHA blend that combines Dioic, Mandelic, and Salicylic acids with Pomegranate Enzymes to deliver visible results while still being kind to the skin barrier.

What really sets it apart is its focus on balance. You get all the resurfacing and glow, without any redness or dryness. Even those with sensitive skin can use it comfortably.

Key Ingredients and How They Work

AHA & BHA Blend (12.5%)

  • Dioic Acid helps reduce sebum production and target breakouts.
  • Mandelic Acid (a gentle AHA) smooths texture and boosts brightness without irritation.
  • Salicylic Acid dives deep into pores to unclog and refine.
  • Pomegranate Enzymes offer gentle enzymatic exfoliation for a polished, glowing finish.

I have to say, I’ve always been drawn to pomegranate enzymes ever since I first discovered them in the iconic REN Clean Skincare Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask (I used to get so excited about using that mask back in the day!). It’s such a shame REN is no longer really around, but I love that this Sachi formula gives me that same kind of glow, just in a more advanced, skin-kind way.

Ayurvedic Botanicals

  • Manuka Honey UMF 20+ soothes and hydrates while supporting skin healing.
  • Goth Cola strengthens the skin barrier and promotes elasticity.
  • Glycerin adds a hit of moisture to counteract any potential dryness from the exfoliating acids.

The combination of these actives means it doesn’t just exfoliate, it also calms, nourishes, and strengthens the skin.

My Review and How I Use It

My Review of Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator
My Review of Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator

I’ve been using the Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator as a flash mask in the evenings, about once a week. I’m always careful not to over-exfoliate, and this has slotted perfectly into my routine.

Here’s how I’ve been using it:

  1. Cleanse my skin thoroughly.
  2. Apply two pumps of the Accelerator in a generous, even layer.
  3. Leave it on for about 10 to 15 minutes – it feels cooling, and you can sense a gentle tingle as the acids get to work.
  4. Rinse off with lukewarm water, pat dry, and follow with my usual hydrating serums and night cream.

It gives my skin a lovely glow and makes it feels super fresh and clean. There’s no redness or sensitivity, and it leaves my complexion prepped beautifully for the rest of my skincare.

It actualy reminds me of the Drunk Elephant Baby Facial, and also the Charlotte Tilbury Super Radiance Resurfacing Facial, but much more suited to sensitive skin.

I don’t tend to suffer from acne, but I do get congestion around the sides of my chin, and I’ve noticed that this helps smooth out those little bumps and refine the texture. It’s effective without being harsh, always important when it comes to exfoliating treatments.

Results and Skin Benefits

Key takeaways:

  • Leaves skin feeling smooth, soft, and radiant
  • No irritation or redness
  • Gently refines texture and helps with congestion
  • Hydrating and comforting, not stripping

I can imagine this being a real hero for anyone dealing with blemishes, dullness, or uneven tone, but it’s equally lovely if your skin just needs a gentle reset.

Who Will Love It

This is a fantastic treatment for most skin types, including sensitive.
It’s ideal if you:

  • Experience dullness or uneven texture
  • Struggle with congestion or breakouts
  • Want to smooth and brighten without irritation

Final Thoughts

The Sachi Complexion Clarifying Accelerator is a brilliant, well-balanced exfoliating treatment that gives all the glow and refinement of a gentle peel with no downtime. I love that it feels both effective and nourishing.

PARIS MILAN RUNWAY HAIR TRENDS 2026 – Iles Formula

0

I’m thrilled to witness a decisive shift in both texture and length on the runways of Paris and Milan for Spring–Summer 2026. This season celebrates contrast — long hair is out short cuts are in! Hair that feels nurtured and alivehonouring natural movement and curl wherever possible, set against sharp, sculptural crops that command attention. The dialogue between softness and precision defined the most compelling looks of the shows.

Dior

  • Cuts & Silhouettes: For Dior’s SS26 (Jonathan Anderson’s debut), modern bobs or slightly shortened styles that echo the past were present.

  • Styling / Texture: The hair appeared more controlled, polished, and elegant, with just enough softness to echo the fluidity in Anderson’s silhouette play.

  • Narrative Role: Because Dior’s collection itself is balancing between heritage and innovation, the hair remains contemporary but not jarring. It supports the clothes without upstaging them.

  • Product: Curl Revivee is the ideal leave-in serum to control intense curls or encourage lazy curls, as demonstrated in this reference.

Takeaway: A versatile crop (or short bob) that can swing between polish and softness would suit Dior’s delicate balance.

Tom Ford

  • Cuts & Silhouettes: At Tom Ford’s SS26 presentation, I saw models with relatively short, sharply cut, helmet-like crops, often with a heavy fringe. The imagery emphasises strong geometry in the haircut (almost architectural) to mirror the sculptural edge of the clothing.

  • Styling / Texture: The cuts tend to be sleek but with intentionally broken edges — not overly “perfect” — to add movement and edge. The strong fringe dominates the face line.

  • Product Iles Formula Finishing Serum is the ultimate no-weight serum for this sleek, silky shape.
  • Integration: The hair is clearly part of the mood — glossy surfaces, high-shine garments, and bold cuts interact. The haircut amplifies the drama.

Moschino

  • Cuts & Silhouettes: Moschino tends to be theatrical, and in the Milan shows, it didn’t disappoint.

  • Short Hair Signal: Moschino SS26. Given their willingness to play with boldness, I noticed micro bobs and graphic fringes appearing in accessory or editorial moments.

  • Product Iles Formula Curl Revive is the recommendation for this tousled, natural curly look.
  • Role in Styling: If they use a cropped cut, it would likely be exaggerated — strong contour, colour contrast, or bold fringe — to complement Moschino’s maximalism.

Celine

  • Cuts & Silhouettes: The hair aesthetic leans more toward clean lines, possibly lobs or slightly shorter bobs.

  • Texture / Finish: Probably more minimalist — effortless, with fine movement rather than high texture.

  • Product: Curl Revive is definitely the serum to use here as it will eliminate frizz in overcurly hair, but at the same time, encourage more movement in otherwise subtle curl.

Given Celine’s identity (often modern, cool, somewhat understated), a shorter cut here would likely be crisp, angular, and softly textured.

Chanel

  • Cuts & Silhouettes: At Chanel SS26 (Matthieu Blazy’s debut), I saw shorter bob-like shapes with soft, slightly tousled edges. One image even shows a cropped bob with a gentle inward flip.

  • Fringe / Bangs: Some of these bobs are paired with a soft (not heavy) fringe or broken micro-fringe.

  • Finish: Not overly slick; more airy, with intentional movement. The hair is part of the couture narrative, mixing softness with structure.

  • Product: Curl Revive is perfect for natural curls or more forced curls, as seen here, with its nod to Coco Chanel herself.

Takeaway: For Chanel, the cropped style is an evolution of the bob — feminine, soft, but with dimension. A formula that gives gentle support and movement (rather than rigid hold) would be ideal.

Ferragamo

  • Cuts & Silhouettes: In the Milan show footage/photos I inspected, I didn’t see extreme short crops. The hair leans more toward medium lengths or softly reduced silhouettes.

  • Styling / Texture: When hair is shorter, it’s subtle — slight tapering, soft layering, maybe short neck lengths rather than full pixies.

  • Product: The Iles Formula Balm, applied lightly to natural curl, delivers a more lived-in 2-day-old curl as seen below.

Ferragamo seems to favour less radical change in the hair dimension — when they dip into short hair, it’s more in the detail than the statement.

Are you ready for the big chop? These are all the trends for Spring-Summer 2026.

Celebrating 25 years of Mukti Organics: a journey of mindful beauty

0

The Mukti Organics brand started in the year 2000 when the founder, Mukti, saw a gap in the Australian beauty market. At the time, consumers had to choose between ‘natural’ products that lacked efficacy or ‘cosmeceutical’ options filled with questionable ingredients.  Armed with a vision and a wealth of experience in the skincare industry, Mukti set out to create a brand that blended nature with science. Working 16-hour days as a single mother raising her daughters, Mukti personally handled every aspect of the business, from formulation to sales. This hands-on approach allowed her to develop a deep understanding of the industry and her products, setting the foundation for the brand’s future success. Alas, the response was immediate and enthusiastic, laying the foundation for a brand that would help shape the rise of natural beauty in Australia.

Fast forward to today and Mukti Organics’ award-winning formulations are sold online, stocked in both domestic and international retailers, and used in professional treatments at world-class salons and spas.

The ingredients’ philosophy: integrity at the core

At Mukti Organics, ingredient integrity is not just a value – it’s the heartbeat of everything they do. They believe that what you put on your skin matters as much as what you put in your body. Their commitment to ingredient transparency means customers always know exactly what’s in their products.

Less is more: simplifying skincare with multi-use formulations

Mukti champions the philosophy that ‘less is more’, encouraging customers to simplify their skincare routines without jeopardising results. Is It a Chemical Burn or an Allergic Reaction to Eyelash Extensions? – Eyelash Emporium

0

We’ve all been there – it’s the day after a client appointment, and you get a message from them in a bit of a panic. They’re describing something that sounds like an allergic reaction or maybe even chemical burns, and they’ve got the photos to prove it. It’s a situation that can make anyone a bit uneasy, both the client and the lash technician. But don’t sweat it – we’re here to break it down without diving too deep into the technical stuff.

Let’s start by clearing up a common misconception. Clients aren’t typically allergic to the lash extensions themselves. Modern lash extensions are usually made from hypoallergenic materials like polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), not silk, mink, or cashmere, as some names might suggest.

In most cases, the real agitator is the adhesive, typically the cyanoacrylate ingredient. Cyanoacrylate is the essential bonding agent in lash glue, ensuring that extensions adhere to natural lashes securely. However, it is a potent chemical that can lead to irritation in certain circumstances.

How Do You Tell Chemical Burns apart from Allergic Reactions?

It’s all about where they cause trouble. Chemical burns tend to happen inside the eye, making the white part of the eye look a bit red and bloodshot and causing a burning sensation. On the other hand, allergic reactions are more about the outer eye area, making the eyelids swell up, irritating the skin, and causing itchiness and discomfort.

Who’s at Risk for Chemical Burns?

Chemical burns can happen to anyone, especially if a client keeps opening their eyes during their appointment. This can happen when clients can’t resist checking their phones, have a sudden caffeine-induced eye twitch, chat too much, or if your hand slips and pushes the lower eyelid down. People with bulging eyes might also struggle to keep them closed during the procedure.

How Do You Lower the Risk of Chemical Burns?

Let’s talk damage control. There are a few things you can do to make sure chemical burns don’t disrupt their lash appointment:

  • Suggest that clients skip the caffeine for at least an hour before their appointment. It can help keep those pesky eye twitches at bay and keep clients relaxed or even help them fall asleep, preventing them from chatting too much.
  • Use thick tape alongside under-eye patches to prevent the lash adhesive fumes from getting into the eye. A thicker tape can help with this, especially for clients with more prominent eyes.
  • Ensure the under-eye patches sit comfortably on the client’s lower lashes and skin. Incorrect placement can cause discomfort and lead to spontaneous eye openings.
  • Ease up the pressure on your isolation tweezers. It may take some practice, but it reduces the chance of accidentally opening the eye.
  • Encourage clients to silence their phones and alarms to maintain a serene environment.

Dealing with Chemical Burns

If the worst happens, and chemical burns do appear, unfortunately, there is no magic cure. However, the redness should calm down in a few days, even if it looks worse than it feels. Tell your clients to talk to a pharmacist if they’re uncomfortable. But remember, you’re not a doctor, so avoid giving medical advice or recommending specific eye drops.

Can Clients with Chemical Burns Get Lash Extensions Again?

They can, but precautions are necessary to keep their eyes tightly shut. Exposing chemical burns to more chemicals increases the odds of future allergic reactions, so prevention is key here.

Who’s prone to allergic reactions?

Anyone can suffer an allergic reaction during or after getting lash extensions, but there’s a higher chance that a long-term client might develop one suddenly compared to a first-time client. That’s because allergies to chemicals tend to build up over time. It’s the body’s way of gradually building a reaction until it decides it doesn’t like something. And as people age, the severity of allergies can change, with some getting better and others getting worse. Since our cells regenerate every few years, it’s not uncommon for our body’s responses to different stimuli to evolve.

We’re not saying that all long-term clients will have a reaction or that first-time clients won’t because it can happen to anyone. It’s essentially a developed allergy that can manifest at any point or persist throughout our lives.

Reducing the Risk of Allergic Reactions

Reducing the risk of allergic reactions can be tricky, as they can happen despite all precautions. Whether you’re using a slow-drying lash adhesive (slower drying means less cyanoacrylate) or you use a fast-drying lash glue (faster glue means more cyanoacrylate but also means less exposure to adhesive fumes over a longer period), some clients may still react. Predicting if or when a reaction will occur can be a lottery, but the reality is that once a client has reacted, you should not provide further treatments, as it can and likely will worsen the reaction.

The Scoop on Patch Tests

Now, you may be thinking that there was no reaction during a patch test. However, they’re not 100% accurate. A patch test involves applying only a small number of lash extensions per eye with a much smaller amount of adhesive compared to the amount used for a full set. Patch tests cover just 10-20 individual lashes, while a full set can have 80-150 lashes, exposing clients to different levels of lash glue fumes. Plus, as we know, allergies can creep up over time. Someone might initially be fine after a patch test but then react unpredictably after a few appointments.

Handling Allergic Reactions

When clients find themselves having an allergic reaction, quick action is needed. Encourage them to see a doctor or pharmacist for medication to ease the reaction. If lash removal is needed, go for a cream remover. It’s more precise than gel and doesn’t drip or run into the eye. If the reaction is serious and the eye has swelled significantly, clients should calm the symptoms by taking prescribed medications and then come to you for removal to avoid extra discomfort. If the eyes are very swollen, they may cover the lash extensions, making removal difficult for you and even more uncomfortable for the client.

Can Clients with Allergic Reactions Try Lash Extensions Again?

Generally, it’s best for clients who’ve had allergic reactions to avoid having further lash extension treatments. These reactions tend to pile up and worsen with time, and some insurance providers might not cover you in these situations. If a client insists on giving it another shot, maybe consider a minimum six-month break before trying a half set. But remember, even with a break, there’s still a risk of more allergic reactions in the future. Alternatively, suggest a lash lift treatment to boost their natural lashes and explore other services you offer while keeping things safe.

So, in a nutshell, understanding the difference between chemical burns and allergic reactions with lash extensions is crucial. While they can be unsettling, with some smart precautions and guidance, you can keep these problems at bay and keep your clients happy and safe.
