What Actually Happens When You Grow Out Bleached Hair?

Hair Color Icon

When you bleach your hair, the pigment inside each strand is stripped out, leaving it lighter… but also much weaker. That bleached hair doesn’t “unbleach” itself over time. It sticks around until it’s either trimmed off or grown out.

As your natural roots grow in, you’ll notice a clear divide between your soft, shiny, healthy new growth and the older, drier bleached sections. This line of demarcation can look harsh, especially if you went much lighter (like platinum or icy blonde).

Not only that, but the texture may feel totally different, and your styling habits will likely need to change. Bleached ends usually require more moisture, while your roots might get oily faster.

It’s a balancing act—but one that’s totally manageable with the right tools and tips.

10 Real Tips to Grow Out Bleached Hair Without Hating It

Sprakle Icon

These practical, tested tips will help you look and feel better throughout the grow-out process.

No dramatic chops required.

#1. Get Regular Trims (Yes, Even While Growing It Out)

It may feel counterproductive to cut your hair when your goal is to grow it… but regular trims are key to maintaining healthy-looking hair and preventing split ends.

Split ends don’t just hang out at the tips—they can travel upward, breaking your hair and making it look thinner and more damaged.

👉 Aim for a light dusting every 8–12 weeks. This keeps your ends fresh, your style polished, and your hair less prone to breakage.

If you’re worried about losing too much length, tell your stylist you only want a micro-trim to maintain shape while keeping as much length as possible.

#2. Tone or Gloss to Blend the Color

One of the hardest parts of growing out bleached hair is that super-obvious root line. Luckily, there are ways to soften the contrast between your natural hair and your light ends without doing another full bleach job.

💡 Try a toning gloss, root smudgeor color-depositing conditioner to create a more blended, lived-in look.

Recommended products:

These options help bridge the color gap as your hair grows, making the grow-out line look intentional rather than “oops.”

#3. Deep Condition Religiously

Bleached hair tends to be thirsty… dry, porous, and in need of serious nourishment.

Deep conditioning treatments are your best friend right now. Use them at least once a week (or more if needed), alternating between protein-based masks (for strength) and moisture masks (for softness and shine).

Favorite masks:

For a tip: wrap your hair in a warm towel or shower cap while the mask processes to boost absorption.

#4. Minimize Heat and Always Use Protection

Heat styling may help your hair look better short term, but it’s often what holds back long-term progress.

Try air-drying when possible, and if you do use heat tools, never skip heat protection. Even bleached hair that looks fine can have hidden damage that worsens over time.

Best heat protectants:

You don’t have to ditch heat completely—just use it mindfully and sparingly while your hair heals.

#5. Embrace Creative Styles That Camouflage the Grow-Out

Instead of fighting the contrast, find ways to style around it.

  • Braids
  • Half-up buns
  • Messy claw clips
  • Loose curls or beach waves

These all help blend the root area into the lighter ends, creating a dimensional, textured look that makes grow-out less obvious.

🌟Bonus: these styles also reduce the need for hot tools and are super on-trend.

#6. Switch Your Part or Add Bangs

This simple trick can make a huge difference in how your grow-out looks.

If you’ve been rocking a middle part with harsh roots peeking through, try flipping it to the side or doing a soft zig-zag. It breaks up the root line and instantly gives the illusion of a softer blend.

Want a bolder change? Add curtain bangs or a long fringe to distract from the contrast.

Just make sure your stylist knows you’re growing out bleached hair so they can cut strategically.

#7. Support Hair Growth From the Inside

Let’s be real: you can’t make your hair grow fasterbut you can absolutely make sure it’s growing at its best.

That means nourishing your body with hair-supporting nutrients like:

  • Biotin
  • Collagen
  • Omega-3s
  • Iron & Vitamin D

Supplements to consider:

Also, drink your water. Hydration plays a bigger role than people realize.

#8. Don’t Overwash and Skip Sulfates

Overwashing your hair can strip away the natural oils that keep your new growth strong and your ends protected.

Aim to wash 2–3 times per week max, and always use sulfate-free products to preserve moisture and color.

Great sulfate-free options:

Use dry shampoo on off days, and focus conditioner only on the ends to avoid greasy roots.

#9. Ditch the Comparison Game

You’re going to see influencers with perfect hairlines and salon-fresh blonde highlights… but chances are, they’re using extensions, filters, or getting professional touch-ups.

Growing out bleached hair takes time and patience, and it often looks messier in real life than it does on social media.

Give yourself grace, and remember: your hair is allowed to look “in progress.”

#10. Have a Long-Term Game Plan

Before you get fed up and impulsively re-bleach or dye it dark, ask yourself: what’s my actual goal?

  • Do you want your natural hair color back?
  • Are you aiming for healthier hair overall?
  • Planning to eventually get balayage or highlights again?

Knowing your destination helps you stay focused through the awkward middle stages. Work with your stylist to map out the steps so you can get there without regret.

Bonus: Should You Dye It Dark or Chop It Off?

Star Icon

Both are totally valid options—but they come with pros and cons.

Dyeing it darker can create a more blended look short-term, but it doesn’t necessarily restore health to your hair. Also, color over bleach can fade fast or look muddy.

Chopping it off gives you a fresh start, but only do it if you’re emotionally ready for shorter hair.

If you’re unsure, wait 48 hours before making any big decisions. Sometimes a good hairstyle and a deep treatment are all you need to feel better.

If you can’t afford a professional colour analysis, here are some tips to help you find some of your best colours.

How to Find Your Best Colours (Even Without a Professional Colour Analysis)

If you’ve ever stood in front of a mirror holding up a top and wondering, Why does this make me look tired? Or why does this one make my eyes pop? You’re not alone. One of the most common questions I hear is, “How do I know what colours suit me?”

The ideal path is to invest in a professional colour analysis, where we look at your unique combination of hair, skin and eyes and identify the tones that harmonise beautifully with your natural colouring. But I completely understand that not everyone is in a position to do that right away.

So here’s how you can start uncovering your best colours on your own.

Look at you—not the clothes

A great starting point is to ask: What colours already exist in me? Think of your eye colour, your hair tones (even greys or whites), your natural lip colour, and your skin’s undertone and flush. These are the colours you’re essentially repeating when you wear your best shades.

For example, in my own palette, my signature colours come directly from my natural colouring. I have silvery greys and whites in my hair, a cool pink blush in my skin, and blue-grey tones in my eyes. So those are the shades I gravitate towards—they feel like me. They’re easy to mix and match, and they make outfit planning feel effortless.

Personal colour anlaysis is looking for colours that relate to your colouringNotice how my outfit blends with me – as the colours relate to my inherent colouring?  That’s what you’re looking for.  You don’t want to be seeing the colour before we see you (that’s fashion – which is about selling clothing not making you look gorgeous).

Signature colours create face focus

One of the things I love most about colour analysis is seeing the shift when someone tries on a colour that truly belongs to them. There’s this subtle magic when you wear a colour that looks like it could’ve come from you. Your face becomes the focus. Your eyes brighten, your skin looks healthier, and the colour itself seems to disappear into you. That’s the power of signature colours.

I sometimes demonstrate this with magazine cut-outs when I teach. I’ll pull colours from a model’s skin, hair and eyes and compare them to my own. And you can instantly see—her colours do not suit me, and mine wouldn’t suit her. That’s the beauty of this work. There’s no one-size-fits-all. What flatters one woman may completely overwhelm another.Imogen Signature colourNotice the difference between this model’s skin colour (which has a golden hue compared to my skin which is more pinkish. She is warm and I am cool.  The colours that would suit us are very different. How to Pick Colours That Make You Shine — Inside Out Style

Try this when shopping

Next time you’re out shopping or rifling through your wardrobe, hold a garment up to your face and ask yourself one simple question: Do I want to look at my face, or the clothes?

If your eye is drawn immediately to the fabric and not your features, it’s likely the colour is wearing you. But if your eyes, skin and smile all seem to come alive, chances are you’re onto something that truly works.

What to look for

You’re looking for harmony. Colours that echo what’s already in your natural palette. Not colours that overpower, dull you down or create shadows. And while there’s more to colour analysis than simply matching hair or eye colour, this experiment is a helpful, low-pressure way to start tuning in.

No need to rely on seasonal labels or complicated systems. This is about developing your eye and trusting your instincts. You might be surprised how quickly you start to notice patterns—certain shades will always make you feel more like yourself.

You are the palette

The most important thing to remember is that the best colours for you are already a part of you. And when you begin choosing clothes that mirror those innate tones, something shifts. You feel seen. You feel more cohesive. And dressing becomes less about trying to “fix” something and more about reflecting who you already are.

If this feels exciting and you want to dive deeper, colour analysis can offer even more clarity. But in the meantime, start with this: Hold up the colour. Look at your face. And trust the version of you that lights up.

And if you’d love to discover your specific palette from my 18 directional Absolute Colour System and find out your signature colours, you can do so here.

Exploring the Benefits of Niacinamide

Discovering Niacinamide for Hair

Hey there, hair care enthusiasts! Today, we’re diving into the exciting world of niacinamide, a superstar ingredient that’s not just for your skin anymore—it’s here to revolutionize your hair care routine too. Known for its numerous benefits for the skin, niacinamide is making waves in hair care, promising healthier, stronger, and shinier locks. Let’s unravel how this powerhouse vitamin can transform your hair and scalp!

The Backstory: Understanding Niacinamide

Image displays a clear niacinamide serum on a pink surface, with a dropper partially submerged in the serum. The transparency of the serum and the dropper emphasize the purity and simplicity of the skincare product. The pink background enhances the aesthetic appeal, creating a soft, inviting look that aligns with the skincare theme.

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a water-soluble vitamin that’s part of the vitamin B complex. It’s celebrated for its roles in cellular energy production and DNA repair. In skincare, niacinamide is a hero for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hydrating properties. But its magic isn’t limited to the skin! Let’s explore how niacinamide is making a splash in hair care.

How Niacinamide Works: The Science Behind It

This image captures a moment of personal care, emphasizing the health benefits of the serum for the scalp, set against a calm, serene backdrop.

To understand the benefits of niacinamide for hair, let’s break down its key actions:

Strengthening Hair: Niacinamide enhances the production of keratin, a vital protein that forms the structure of hair. This boost in keratin production helps strengthen hair strands, making them less prone to breakage and damage. Stronger hair means fewer split ends and more manageable locks!

Enhancing Scalp Health: A healthy scalp is the foundation of great hair. Niacinamide improves scalp health by:

  • Enhancing the skin barrier function
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Increasing moisture retention
By boosting blood circulation to the scalp, niacinamide ensures that hair follicles receive the nutrients they need to thrive, promoting healthier hair growth.

Reducing Oxidative Stress: Oxidative stress from free radicals can wreak havoc on your hair and scalp, leading to thinning and loss. Niacinamide’s antioxidant properties neutralize these free radicals, protecting hair follicles from damage and promoting healthier, stronger hair.

Improving Moisture Retention: Niacinamide helps the skin (including the scalp) retain moisture, preventing dryness and flakiness. A well-hydrated scalp is less prone to issues like dandruff and irritation, creating a better environment for hair growth.

The Bright Side: Benefits of Niacinamide for Hair

Her smiling reflection in the mirror highlights her satisfaction with the routine, while the well-lit bathroom enhances the clarity and freshness of the scene.
Incorporating niacinamide into your hair care routine can provide a host of benefits:

Strengthened Hair Strands:

  • Boosts keratin production: Leading to stronger hair strands
  • Reduces breakage and split ends: Resulting in smoother, healthier hair

Enhanced Shine and Smoothness:

  • Retains moisture in the hair shaft: Leading to shinier, smoother hair
  • Reduces frizz: Improving hair texture and manageability

Improved Scalp Health:

  • Reduces inflammation: Creating a healthier scalp environment

Enhances blood circulation:

  • Promoting nutrient delivery to hair follicles

Reduced Hair Loss:

  • Protects hair follicles: From oxidative stress and damage
  • Promotes hair density and volume: By maintaining healthy follicles

The Flip Side: Potential Side Effects

The focus on her careful application highlights the nurturing treatment she is giving her scalp to enhance hair health. The clean, bright setting underscores the purity and effectiveness of the skincare routine.

While niacinamide is generally safe for most hair types, be aware of potential side effects:

Mild Irritation:

  • Possible sensitivity: Some may experience mild irritation, particularly those with sensitive skin or scalp.
  • Patch test recommended: Always perform a patch test before full application.

Allergic Reactions:

  • Rare occurrences: Allergic reactions can happen. Discontinue use if you experience itching, redness, or swelling and consult a healthcare professional.

Safety First: How to Use Niacinamide for Hair

The focused application highlights the serum's role in enhancing hair health and shine. The pink backdrop adds a gentle, nurturing touch to the scene, emphasizing the care and attention she is giving to her hair.

To get the best out of niacinamide and avoid any potential downsides, follow these tips:

Perform a Patch Test:

  • Apply a small amount: To a discreet area of your skin.
  • Wait 24-48 hours: Check for any adverse reactions.

Choose the Right Products:

  • Niacinamide shampoos and conditioners: Ideal for daily use, strengthening hair, and improving scalp health.
  • Serums and treatments: Targeted benefits for the scalp, promoting circulation, reducing inflammation, and encouraging growth.
  • Hair masks: Provide intensive treatment, deeply nourishing and repairing hair.

Incorporate Gradually:

  • Start slow: Introduce niacinamide products gradually into your routine.
  • Monitor your scalp’s response: Increase concentration as your scalp builds tolerance.

  • Serums and Treatments: Scalp serums and treatments with niacinamide offer targeted benefits. They improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote hair growth. Use these treatments consistently for the best results.
  • Hair Masks: Niacinamide hair masks provide an intensive treatment that deeply nourishes and repairs hair. Use a niacinamide hair mask once or twice a week to give your hair an extra boost of strength and hydration.

La Roche-Posay Made Hyalu B5 SPF 30… Creamy? My Review of the NEW Launch.

0

A richer take on the Hyalu B5 line, now with SPF 30 and a plush texture best suited for cooler temps and dry skin days.

A few years ago, I fell for the B5 Aquagel SPF It even made my Best of 2021 list. And while I still like that formula, my sunscreen horizons have definitely expanded since moving to Spain. Still, when I spotted a jar labeled NEW at a neighborhood pharmacy—La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Suractivated Cream SPF 30—I didn’t hesitate. Into the basket it went. Here are my first impressions.

La Roche Posay Hyalu B5 moisturizer with SPF 30 out of a box

What is Hyalu B5, again?

The Hyalu B5 range is all about hydration and barrier support. If you’re not deep in the ingredient weeds, the name is a clue: “Hyalu” refers to Hyaluronic Acid, and “B5” is Vitamin B5, also known as Panthenol. Together, they hydrate, soothe, and help reinforce the skin’s moisture barrier. That’s the elevator pitch.

LRP Hyalu B5 new SPF 30 face moisturizer in hand

La Roche-Posay positions the line as anti-aging care for sensitive skin. In true French pharmacy fashion, fragrance makes an appearance but it’s tucked toward the very end of the INCI list. Personally, I don’t rely on the Hyalu B5 range exclusively. My face washes are usually Toleriane or Effaclar, and for body I love Lipikar. When it comes to SPF, it took me years to warm up to Anthelios, but the new UVAir launch finally won me over. So yes, I’m picky. But this new Hyalu B5 Suractivated Cream SPF 30 had me curious. And I’m glad I picked it up.

Also, in keeping with current ingredient trends, La Roche-Posay spotlights Ectoin in this new formula. This amino acid derivative is known for its deeply hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a fantastic UV-stress shield. It’s especially appreciated by skin that’s easily irritated, redness-prone, or feeling the effects of environmental overexposure.

What is Suractivated?

No, really. I’m asking you. Because for the life of me, I can’t figure it out. At first, I thought it said superactivatedbut no—it’s suractivated. After 25 years of being a diligent skincare user, I’ve learned to tune out a lot of marketing fluff. Maybe this name is part of that. Still, if anyone at L’Oréal can shed some light from behind the scenes, I’m all ears.

What does suractivated mean in La Roche Posay new SPF 30 cream?
I knew you guys would come through! Thank you, @texasgirlamy! <3

La Roche-Posay new SPF 30 face cream for dry skin types.

About those UV filters

The formula relies on four chemical filters that deliver broad-spectrum SPF 30 protection. Only two of them are FDA-approved in the U.S., which likely means this version will remain EU-exclusive. All four, however, are proven and highly effective.

Ingredient Trade Name EU Approved US Approved Function
Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid Enslizole UVB filter
Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane Avobenzone UVA filter
Ethylhexyl Triazone Uvinul T 150 UVB filter
Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine Tinosorb S Broad-spectrum (UVA + UVB)

Texture, finish, and how I use it

This is not your airy, gel-based sunscreen. The texture is creamy and substantial; best suited for normal to dry skin types or anyone dealing with cooler, drier weather. It would’ve been too rich for me during Madrid’s summer, but now that the temperatures have dropped, I’m enjoying it.

Skincare routine including the new La Roche-Posay SPF 30 face cream.

If you’re layering serums, keep it simple. This plays best with a minimalist routine. I’ve been using one serum—either Vitamin C or a peptide—letting it fully absorb, then applying the Hyalu B5 SPF. It doesn’t pill, sits nicely, and has a slightly occlusive feel that’s more cushiony than greasy. It’s not tacky or sticky, but it is noticeable, like a soft, flexible hold on the skin rather than a coating of product. Since the filters are 100% chemical, there is 0% chance of any white cast. Because science. And logic.

New La Roche-Posay SPF 30 cram for dry skin.

For those who wear makeup, using pigmented formulas over this new La Roche-Posay may be a challenge. I found that some bronzers did pill (like the Dr. Hauschka Translucent Bronzing Tint) but others did very well, (like the Jones Road Gel Bronzer). The truth is, trial and error is the only way to find out what works and what may need an application tweak.

Final thoughts

La Roche-Posay is known for its featherlight sunscreens, and this one breaks that mold. If you already love the Hyalu B5 line for its hydration and barrier support, you’ll probably adore this new iteration. But if you live in a hot, humid climate, it might feel too rich for daytime wear. For me, it’s a fall and winter staple—and I can easily see the jar empty before the year’s out.

I am unable to locate it anywhere other than Spain at the moment. It is appearing in more local pharmacies around here. You can also find it on amazon.es where it runs around 40 euro a jar (50ml and refillable). It is also at primor.eu where you can find it at 30% off.

The product page on Spanish brand website has a helpful pharmacy locator as well.

Tint Your Lips with Fall’s Best Superfoods

0

While fall is not officially here yet, we can definitely start feeling its presence. And sure, it’s always hard to say goodbye to summer vacay, endless daylight and free time, but there’s also something comforting about the beginning of fall. Case in point: fall superfoods, such as pumpkins, beets and cranberries are here. And not just in pumpkin spice latte form (although, that, too). We’re talking about tinting our lips!

Trends such as clean beauty and skinimalism make it easy to let go of heavy lipsticks in favor of lighter, more subtle lip tints. We love them in the summer, but we love them in the fall, too. Instead of reaching for the shelf at Sephora, may we suggest using affordable ingredients from the supermarket to make your own.
