Hair fall has a way of sneaking up on you. One day your ponytail feels the same as always, and then suddenly you notice the thinning around your crown, the dullness that no serum can mask, and the kind of breakage that makes you want to blame the weather, your shampoo, or honestly, the universe.

I’ve been there. And after talking to readers, clients, and experts for years, I know I’m far from alone.

My journey with iron deficiency related hair loss wasn’t dramatic at first. It wasn’t clumps of hair falling out. It was quiet. Subtle. Persistent.

Like most people, my first instinct was to change my hair care routine. I tried gentler shampoos for hair fall control, massaged my scalp more often, reduced heat styling. They helped a little, but they weren’t solving the core issue. The real culprit was sitting deeper not on my scalp but inside my bloodstream.

This article is part story, part science, and part guide. If you’re losing hair and suspect iron deficiency might be behind it, consider this your friendly, slightly nerdy roadmap.

Why Iron Deficiency Causes Hair Fall?

Your hair follicles are hungry. They need oxygen to grow strong, thick, healthy strands. Iron is responsible for carrying that oxygen through your blood. When iron levels dip, your hair follicles get less oxygen. They basically go into power-saving mode.

But here’s where it gets interesting: research overwhelmingly supports this connection.

  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of over 10,000 women found that women with non-scarring alopecia (diffuse hair thinning) had significantly lower ferritin levels than women without hair loss. In simple terms: low iron storage strongly correlates with more shedding.
  • A well-cited case–control study echoes the same pattern, women with diffuse telogen hair loss had an average ferritin level of around 16.3 ng/mLwhile those without hair loss averaged 60.3 ng/mL. That’s not a small gap; it’s a completely different biological environment for your hair follicles.
  • A cross-sectional study from India reported that around 65% of women with diffuse hair loss were iron deficient or in an iron-depleted state.

So what does this mean for you?

Iron deficiency doesn’t make hair fall dramatically overnight. It works quietly, subtly, and persistently, the exact way many women first notice their thinning hair. It often gets mistaken for hormonal hair loss, seasonal shedding, or even product damage.

The tricky part?

You can have normal hemoglobin but still be low in ferritin. And it’s ferritin that your hair relies on the most.

How To Tell If Iron Deficiency Is Behind Your Hair Fall?

Here’s the truth: you can’t guess. You need a lab test.

Ferritin is the key marker. While the “normal” range varies across labs, most hair experts agree that hair grows best when ferritin levels are above approximately 50–70 ng/mL. If you suspect iron deficiency hair loss, get a test and rule it in or out.

Skipping tests and self-medicating is one of the biggest mistakes people make.

Don’t!

My Hair Fall Due To Iron Deficiency Story

My symptoms didn’t scream iron deficiency. They whispered. My hair was dull and fragile, my crown looked a bit thinner day by day, and the breakage was getting out of hand. What confused me most was that I wasn’t under extreme stress, and my hormones seemed normal.

So why did my hair feel like it was slowly giving up?

After weeks of guessing, I finally did what I should’ve done from the beginning: I got a lab test.

My ferritin levels were lower than ideal, not low enough to be alarming, but definitely low enough to affect my hair. And that was my lightbulb moment. I realized how many people around me, especially women, deal with this silently.

Many of my readers later told me they experienced the same signs. Some of them struggled with postpartum hair fall, others with hormonal fluctuations, a few with dietary gaps. It all pointed to one thing: iron deficiency hair fall is far more common than most of us realize.

So I began my own recovery phase. And spoiler alert: it wasn’t a glamorous overnight transformation.

What I Actually Did: The Real-Life Routine That Helped My Hair Bounce Back

It took me more than 3-4 months to see meaningful improvement, and I owe the results to my hair fall control diet, supplements, gentle hair care routine and patience. Iron deficiency hair fall needs a two-sided approach: internal nourishment and external gentleness. Here’s a simple routine I followed:

I Concentrated Well On My Diet

Here’s a quick, practical food list (based on what helped me and what I recommend to readers):

  • Daily jaggery and roasted groundnuts: This was my go-to snack. Simple, inexpensive, and surprisingly effective. The combination of iron from jaggery and protein from groundnuts gave me a nutrient boost I didn’t even realize I needed.
  • Spinach soup: I made this often. It’s warming, nourishing, and far easier to digest than raw spinach. Also, it felt soothing during days when I wanted something comforting.
  • Beets whenever I could add them: Beetroot isn’t everyone’s favorite (I know the earthy taste is controversial), but it worked beautifully for me.
  • If you prefer you should definitely incorporate chicken liver, eggs and fish (especially sardines), lentils, chickpeas, almonds, tofu, and pumpkin seeds along with vitamin C boosters like oranges, lemons, amla, berries and tomatoes for better absorption.
  • Supplements: Since a lot of readers ask, I prefer oral iron supplements over topical iron solutions. Hair needs iron inside the bloodstream. Supplements work best when paired with right diet and taken under guidance. I paired my iron supplements with vitamin C for better absorption.

Combine iron-rich foods with vitamin C and keep tea/coffee away from your iron-rich meals because they reduce absorption.

Weekly Indian Oiling Routine, Hair Steaming And Regular Scalp Massage Was Non-Negotiable

If you have been a regular reader, you might know that I practice hair oiling religiously. I often switch hair oils often, make different DIYs as per my hair’s current needs but this time I kept rotating between multiple oils but ones that helped with my hair fall concern were mainly on my radar. Sometimes it were store bought other times I made DIYs like hibiscus hair oil, or fenugreek hair oil.

After slightly warming up the hair oil using double boiler method, I did hair steaming followed by scalp massage for 5 minutes following the inversion method.

Gentle SLS-free Rosemary Shampoo

Avoid washing your hair daily while your hair is already under stress. It attacks your hair in its vulnerable stage by stripping the natural oils that help strengthen hair, which leads to more breakage. And diluting your shampoo with fenugreek soaked water helps give a slight nudge in your hair fall problems, incase if you wanna give it a try.

I Conditioned Like My Life Depends On It

As someone with dry hair, I knew I wasn’t gonna let lack of nourishment steal anymore hair strands. I needed one that softens and detangles my thick strands without weighing them down, gives me that silky-smooth slip you usually only get after a salon treatment. But mainly I wanted my hair to get plenty of nourishment, moisture and minimize hair breakage and shedding.

Last update on 2025-11-15 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Refrigerate your hair conditioner for 10 minutes before using and apply on damp hair. Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse with cold water for best results.

I didn’t do anything extreme. No fancy salon treatments. Just months of consistency. This routine won’t regrow hair if iron levels are low. But it can prevent further breakage, be gentle on your manes and help your existing hair look healthier as you work on your internal levels.

Mistakes I Made That Slowed My Hair Regrowth

Looking back, I realize I delayed my recovery by focusing too much on external treatments first. I changed shampoos way too often, blamed the weather, and ignored the fact that my body was trying to tell me something.

Common mistakes people make (including me):

  • Assuming all hair fall is stress or shampoo-related
  • Switching hair products endlessly
  • Self-medicating without tests
  • Taking iron with meals that block absorption
  • Ignoring fatigue, brain fog, or brittle nails

If you’re reading this and nodding along, take this as your sign to book a test instead of looking at your bathroom shelf.

When Did I First Noticed Improvement?

Since you asked for honesty, I didn’t magically wake up one morning with glossy, Rapunzel-like hair. My results appeared gradually. Around the three-month markI noticed:

  • Less hair in the drain
  • Fewer strands on my comb
  • More shine
  • Slight volume at the crown
  • Breakage stopping first, then hair regrowth.

Hair regrowth from iron deficiency is slow but steady.

Over To You: Awareness, Empowerment, & Listening To Your Hair

Iron deficiency hair fall isn’t something you need to panic about, but it’s also not something to ignore. Your hair is often the first part of your body to show signs of nutritional imbalance. And it’s one of the last to fully recover, which is why consistency matters.

If you’re losing hair and nothing topical is helping, don’t skip the blood work. Don’t guess. Don’t wait for it to magically go away. Your body is smarter than you think, and your hair is one of its loudest messengers.

Hair fall due to iron deficiency is more common than most people think, especially among women. Before trying supplements on your own, please get your ferritin levels checked. A simple test can save months of stress and unnecessary treatments. Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C, avoid overthinking every hair that falls, and treat your scalp with kindness. Healing takes time, but it’s absolutely possible with the right approach.

Disclaimer: This isn’t medical advice. It’s general information meant to help you understand your hair and health better. If you’re experiencing severe or sudden hair fall, or suspect a deficiency, please consult a qualified healthcare professional before starting any supplements, treatments, or making changes to your health routine.

The Effort of Looking Effortless (and Why It’s Okay to Ditch It)

0

We’ve all been there: scrolling through Instagram, bombarded with images of seemingly flawless individuals who look like they just threw something on and magically ended up looking effortlessly chic.

They radiate that “I woke up like this” vibe, and we’re left wondering, “How do they do it?”

As a personal stylist, I’m here to tell you a secret: that “effortless” look often takes a lot of effort. And sometimes, it comes at the expense of something far more valuable: your personal style.

“Is the ‘effortless’ look we see on the likes of Pinterest really as “effortless” as we think it is?

The Illusion of Effortlessness:

Those perfectly styled individuals haven’t just stumbled upon their look. They’ve likely invested time, energy, and sometimes money into cultivating it.

What we perceive as effortless is often the result of careful planning, strategic shopping, tailoring, and a deep understanding of what works.

And I can tell you from experience, who has time for that! Not me! I just end up looking like a hot mess (not really what I’m aiming for)

The Pinterest Trap:

Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE me some Pinterest, I think it’s a super-valuable tool for finding your own aesthetic...The problem is, in our quest to achieve this “effortless” aesthetic, we often fall into the “Pinterest trap.” We become so focused on replicating the looks we see online that we lose sight of our own unique style.

We start chasing a trend, a fleeting image of perfection, instead of embracing what makes us feel confident and authentic.

The Importance of Personal Style:

Your personal style is your unique fingerprint. It’s an expression of who you are, your values, and your personality.

It’s about wearing what makes you feel good, regardless of what’s “trending” or what looks “effortless” on someone else.

Why Effortless Shouldn’t Be Your Only Goal:

Trying to look “effortless” can sometimes lead to:

  • Playing it Safe: Sticking to neutral colours and basic pieces to avoid making a “fashion faux pas.”
  • Feeling Inauthentic: Wearing something that doesn’t truly reflect your personality just because it looks “effortless” on someone else.
  • Ignoring Your Body Type: Choosing styles that are “on trend” but don’t flatter your figure.
  • Losing Your Spark: Sacrificing your individuality for the sake of looking like everyone else.

Embrace Your Individuality:

Instead of chasing the illusion of effortlessness, focus on cultivating your own personal style. This means:

  • Experimenting: Trying different styles, colours, and silhouettes.
  • Paying Attention to How You Feel: What clothes make you feel confident and comfortable?
  • Ignoring the Trends (Mostly): Focus on what you love, not what’s “in.”
  • Investing in Pieces You Love: Buy clothes that make you happy, not just clothes that look “effortless.”
  • Owning Your Look: Confidence is the ultimate accessory.

Ultimately, true style is about expressing yourself authentically. It’s about wearing what you love and feeling confident in your own skin. So, ditch the pressure of looking “effortless” and embrace the joy of discovering your own unique style.

That, my friends, is truly effortless.

The Best Time to Apply Vitamin C Serum – According to Celebrity Facial

0

If there’s one product that transforms dull, tired skin into a visibly radiant complexion, it’s Vitamin C serum. Loved by dermatologists and top facialists alike, this powerhouse antioxidant brightens, firms, and protects your skin from daily environmental stressors.

But timing matters. Even the best formula can lose potency if it’s applied at the wrong moment. So, should you use your Vitamin C serum in the morning, at night, or both?

Here’s what experts — and Joanna Vargas herself — recommend, plus how the Rescue Vitamin C + Squalane Serum delivers the glow that endures.

Key Takeaways

  • Morning: Defends against pollution, blue light, and UV-related oxidative stress.

  • Night: Enhances repair and collagen renewal while you sleep.

  • Always with SPF: Vitamin C and sun protection are the ultimate defense duo.

  • Consistency wins: Regular use matters more than frequency.

  • The Rescue Serum Difference: A stable Vitamin C paired with squalane for maximum absorption and hydration.

1. Why Timing Matters

Vitamin C is one of skincare’s most delicate ingredients — highly effective, but prone to oxidation when exposed to light and air. When used correctly, it becomes one of the most transformative tools for maintaining bright, firm, resilient skin.

Applying it at the right time ensures it works with your skin’s natural rhythm — protecting by day and restoring by night.

As Joanna Vargas explains:

“Timing your actives isn’t about rules — it’s about results. Vitamin C performs differently depending on what your skin needs in that moment.”

2. Why Morning Application Shines

Most estheticians and dermatologists agree: morning is the ideal time to apply Vitamin C.

Throughout the day, your skin faces oxidative stress from sunlight, blue light, and pollution. Vitamin C acts as a potent antioxidant shield, neutralizing free radicals before they can damage collagen or dull your complexion.

When you use Rescue Vitamin C + Squalane Serum in the morning, you:

  • Protect against environmental aggressors.

  • Prevent dullness and uneven tone.

  • Boost natural luminosity for a radiant, makeup-ready finish.

Follow with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher — this duo forms your skin’s daily defense system.

3. Nighttime Benefits

While morning application protects, evening use restores.

As you sleep, your skin enters its repair phase. Applying Vitamin C serum at night helps boost collagen production, calm inflammation, and correct signs of daily stress.

The Rescue Serum is ideal for this because it pairs a stable, oil-soluble form of Vitamin C (Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate) with olive-derived squalanewhich nourishes and supports the skin barrier without clogging pores.

Used morning, night, or both — it adapts beautifully to your skin’s natural cycles.

4. How to Layer for Maximum Results

Proper layering enhances every active ingredient. Joanna Vargas recommends:

  1. Cleanse: Start with a gentle cleanser such as the Vitamin C Face Wash to prep and purify.

  2. Apply Serum: Dispense 2–3 drops of Rescue Serum on clean, dry skin. Press gently into the face, neck, and décolletage.

  3. Moisturize: Follow with Daily Hydrating Cream to strengthen the skin barrier.

  4. Protect: In the morning, finish with SPF. At night, use an Overnight Moisturizer for added nourishment.

For a tip: After exfoliating acids, allow 5–10 minutes before applying Vitamin C so your skin’s pH can rebalance.

Serum_Rescue_Product_web_Square.jpg__PID:27f7d05f-a7ec-4489-8157-6a2b954737c8

5. The Joanna Vargas Rescue Serum Difference

What makes this serum unique isn’t just its brightening power — it’s the harmony between Vitamin C, squalane, and elderberry extract:

  • Vitamin C (Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate): A stable, oil-based form that penetrates deeply to firm and even tone without irritation.

  • Squalane: A plant-derived hydrator that mimics the skin’s natural oils to lock in moisture and enhance barrier strength.

  • Elderberry Extract: A botanical antioxidant that helps shield skin from oxidative damage.

Together, they deliver visible radiance while strengthening your skin from within.

As Joanna Vargas shares:

“We designed this serum to deliver results without irritation. The squalane naturally stabilizes the Vitamin C, so every drop feels pure, potent, and plant-powered.”

6. Consistency Is Everything

Whether applied in the morning, evening, or both, consistent use is what transforms your skin over time. Expect:

  • A brighter, more even complexion.

  • Reduced discoloration and dark spots.

  • Softer, plumper, more hydrated skin.

Named Allure’s Best of Beauty ‘Top Splurge’the Rescue Vitamin C + Squalane Serum is celebrated for delivering enduring radiance — one luxurious drop at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Should I apply Vitamin C before or after moisturizer?
A: Always before moisturizer, so antioxidants can penetrate effectively.

Q: Can I use Vitamin C with retinol?
A: Yes — apply Vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night for balanced renewal and protection.

Q: How soon will I see results?
A: Many notice an immediate glow, with visibly improved tone and firmness in 2–4 weeks.

Q: Is the Joanna Vargas Rescue Serum safe for sensitive skin?
A: Absolutely. Its oil-based, non-acidic form of Vitamin C makes it suitable even for sensitive skin types.

Antioxidant-Rich Pomegranate Smoothie Recipe | Hello Glow

0

Today’s recipe is a gorgeous, delicious, super-healthy pomegranate smoothie that I’m planning on drinking as long as the fruit is in season. Because, yes, pomegranates are the star of this recipe! The pomegranate fruit offers a slew of health and beauty benefits and should have a permanent spot in your clear skin regimen. If you’re not sure how to incorporate the wonder fruit into your diet, this pretty pink smoothie is an excellent place to start.

Pomegranate Smoothies Are Packed With Nutrients

Found in the writings and artifacts of many ancient cultures and religions, the pomegranate (Punica granatum) is native to Persia. This nutrient dense, antioxidant-rich fruit has been esteemed as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal life.

Pomegranates contain high levels of flavonoids and polyphenols, potent antioxidants offering protection against heart disease [source] and different types of cancer [source 1, source 2]. Supplementary health benefits of pomegranate include lowering of blood pressure [source] and contribution to cardiovascular, nerve and skeletal health.

With an impressive nutrient profile, including potassium, folate, fiber, and vitamins C and K, pomegranates also come with important anti-inflammatory properties, which could reduce the chances of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and type II diabetes.

How To Make A Smoothie with Pomegranate Seeds

Pomegranate seeds are not just super healthy—they taste great, too! Their sweet and sour flavor comes with few calories, while their jewel red color makes for an Instagram-worthy look. (Seriously, check out this gorgeous red pomegranate and beet smoothie!)

In this smoothie, we paired pomegranate with frozen raspberries, for an even more intense color and an extra antioxidant boost; some banana for creaminess; plus greens and seeds for even more health benefits.

While I’m a sucker for a good latte in fall, sometimes my body craves something lighter. All fruit, no dairy, something you can blend in a second and be out the door in the next. Scroll down for the full recipe, and feel free to increase the quantities if you want to make ahead and freeze for later.

East Asia Meets The Southwest – Embellished Gel Nail Art | Chalkboard Nails

0

I have been waiting for this day since the beginning of the challenge. Not only because it meant that I had successfully completed the gauntlet for the fifth (!!!) year in a row, but also because I had a manicure that I have been dying to recreate for a very long time.

This beauty of a manicure is completely inspired by 111NAIL salon in Japan. I love it SO much. I tried to copy it to the best of my ability (and materials) and I am beyond happy with the outcome. I just adore the aesthetic of Japanese nail art; it’s always so refined and balanced.

Southwest-inspired gel nail art by @chalkboardnails

Since the challenge is now over, I decided to these in gel and on both hands so I can enjoy them for a while. Here are the products that I used:

Gelish – Hot Rod Red
Red Carpet Manicure – Sandal Scandal
Akzentz Gel Play in White and Black

Gold caviar beads
Triangle studs
Turquoise teardrop charm
Round gold frame

Akzentz Bling On (used to attach 3D embellishments)
Presto Top Gel (thick gel topcoat)
Gelish Foundation (go-to gel basecoat)

Southwest-inspired gel nail art by @chalkboardnails

These nails weren’t hard to do at all; however, they were pretty time consuming.

The drag marble nails are my favorite part and are beyond easy, especially in gel. All you need to do is apply the colors in arced stripes, and then drag a clean striper brush through them to create the patterns. Cure the marbling in your lamp and you’re set!

The other nails are basically just dots and embellishments, which I attached using Akzentz Bling On. It’s a super strong, thick gel that grabs ahold of your charms or studs and helps keep them in place once cured. It made the process of placing the gold bits a lot easier, especially on a manicure like this with so many elements.

I made sure to finish with a thick gel topcoat to help smooth out the edges on the 3D pieces.

If you have a moment, be sure to go give @111nail_omotesando a follow on Instagram, I have completely copied this manicure from them and there is so much more gorgeous work to be seen on that account.

That’s a wrap on the challenge for this year! Stay tuned for my 2015 roundup, and congratulations to those of you who have finished as well!

Slather or Dab? The Right Amounts for Each Product – skinfo

0

When it comes to skincare, we endlessly talk about the type of products and number of steps in our routines, but never how much of them we should be using. At Advanced Dermatology and skinfo® we recommend a CORE 4 regimen for anti-aging, which includes antioxidants (typically found in serums), an exfoliant (found in retinol), growth factors (collagen-building peptides), and sunscreen.

If you’ve ever tried to rub in an excessive amount of product only to be met with a pilling and rolling mess, then you know that the amount of each product used is equally as important as using the right products for your skin. Using too much product can be ineffective, a waste of hard-earned cash, cause skin irritation, redness, oily residue or breakouts, and a disrupted skin barrier. Similarly, if you’ve ever felt like your products aren’t “working,” or you are spending too much time getting the product to absorb into your skin, it could be an issue of dosage. It is always better to under-apply than over-apply. Many dermatologists recommend easing your skin into a product by using a lesser amount to start, especially when it comes to active ingredients. Many products only require a pea or pearl sized amount for the whole face, so it is important to remember that often less is more.

When it comes to facial cleansers, you can feel confident pouring a nickel-sized amount into your palm and massaging it into your skin, which will create a considerable lather in any foaming product, leaving the skin feeling clean. Because serums and retinol tend to be so emollient and packed with high concentrations of skin-loving ingredients, the size of a chocolate chip tends to be the right amount to see results without overusing or wasting the product. For lotions and creams, a dollop the size of a quarter is enough to coat the face, neck, and the much forgotten décolletage. With the thicker texture of masks and zinc-based sun protectants it is recommended to use as much as it takes to coat your face. Last, but not least, are eye creams. Use a dab the size of a pea, split between both eyes along the orbital bone.

Every product that makes up your skincare routine has its own recommended method of usage, whether an application or quantity is in question. As a rule of thumb, always make sure you read the instructions on the packaging of every product. Your skin and wallet will thank you!

Or guaranteed laughs with Tiffany Haddish and Regina Hall in Girls Trip? We even included some musical classics like Grease, Hairspray and Mary Poppins. You’re welcome.
