FRUGAL CITY GUIDE: LIVERPOOL

0

Never before have we been to a city and had a more positive reaction than with Liverpool. It’s a city in everyone’s hearts and we can totally see why. Thankfully, the sun was shining for our two nights in the city but with so many great, affordable restaurants, brilliant shopping and museums and galleries to visit it’s clear we would’ve have a great time regardless (and we will definitely be back!).

HOW TO GET THERE

We travelled by train into Liverpool Lime Street (roughly 2.5 hours from London) and we were immediately in the centre of the city. It was quicker, really easy and can be affordable if booked far enough in advance.

WHERE TO STAY

We were hosted at Hope Street Hotel which was gorgeous and for a short boutique minibreak we can highly recommend. THE comfiest bed and huge bathtub, we were so sorry to leave! I loved the minimal but cosy aesthetic and rooms start from £89 a night.

Other places to stay that come recommended are Baltic Hotel and Lock & Key boutique hotel and if you wanted to mix up a beach visit, we have been wanting to stay at Aberley House on Crosby Beach for ages (we had it booked a few months ago but sadly couldn’t make it!).

WHAT TO DO

We found there were lots of lovely ‘pockets’ to the city so we walked around the Georgian quarter, the docks and the Baltic Quarter. There are great murals around the city too (including the Jurgen Klopp mural (a ‘must-visit’ for Chris!) and the infamous ‘The Liverpool Wings’ by Paul Curtis). We grabbed a coffee at Bold Street coffee and took in all the shops (Bold Street reminded us of Neal Street, Covent Garden with a lovely mix of eco stores, independent boutiques, vintage stores and a sprinkling of (cooler) chain restaurants like Pho, Honest and Bundobust) and as expected, everyone was so friendly and welcoming.

Liverpool is such a cultural city, so a gallery visit is a must. We fell in love with the Walker Art Gallery (free admission and opposite Liverpool Lime Street station) and loved the mix of pre-Raphaelite paintings (Albert Moore, Rosetti and JW Waterhouse) mixed with more modern works such as Lucian Freud and iconic works by Lowry.

We worked with The Walker Art Gallery whist in Liverpool but this is an editorial post.

Tate Liverpool is also a big pull, on the Royal Albert Dock (which is a great place to walk around anyway: lots of shops nearby – MerseyMade sells art and gifts by local creators and artists – as well as tons of restaurants) but we chose to visit the Museum of Liverpool (in the same area) as the building looked too good not to enter and we’d heard great things!

We absolutely loved it, it’s kind of an homage to the resilience of Liverpudlians – the history, adversity, the music scene, the sport, the talent, the community. It was really interactive (amazing for kids as well as adults) and they have Little Liverpool which is imaginative and educational play for under 6’s – it’s ticketed but free (we will 100% be bringing our kids back for this!).

Sefton Parkjust a bus ride (or you can rent an electric scooter!) away, is a beautiful park and you can visit the Palm House whilst there (it’s free but you can also donate, plus there’s a gorgeous cafe inside). And the best bit: Lark Lane is a buzzing street filled with independent shops and restaurants just up the road – perfect spot for lunch, a pint or just a coffee and meander around the independent stores and vintage shops (we stopped at Doogles for a coffee and donut).

WHERE TO EAT

We had a LOT of good food here, and most eateries were relaxed and affordably priced which we loved even more! For pasta and pizza, Buyers Club was excellent (and in January there were offering 50% off pizza and pasta Mon-Thurs). We were recommended ‘Mary’ by so many and it didn’t disappoint (order the Disco cauliflower) – there are a few branches across Liverpool and they also offer an excellent vegan menu.

For fancy cocktails, we met a friend in Little Cafe Du Coin and as a local, she recommended Madre for dinner (to be frank: my pal Amy pretty much drew us an itinerary for this City Guide!) which we loved and found it affordable (dinner for two – with one alcoholic drink – was £32 including tip).

Other recommendations include: Rudy’s Pizza (we had this in Manchester – delicious), Vietnamese, Slim’s Gourmet Diner, Queens bistro (just round the corner from The Cavern!) and Mowgli.

If that doesn’t make you fancy a city break, then I’m not sure what does. We loved Liverpool and can’t wait to go back.

The Surprising Strength Workout Linked to Better Brain Function, According to a Neuroscientist

0

If the idea of strength training once conjured young men thrusting a barbell or popping out pullups, the tides have since turned: Lifting, even lifting heavyhas finally gained cultural cachet among women of all ages thanks to experts who’ve long espoused its benefits for women’s bones, metabolism, and more. But if there’s one part of resistance training that’s worth paying special attention to, particularly if you’re in perimenopause or beyond, it’s leg day. A strong lower body may be key to better brain aging, Louisa Nicola, MMed, a New York–based neurophysiologist who studies Alzheimer’s disease in women, tells SELF.

Nicola points to a 2015 study of 300-plus female twins that revealed a fascinating link: Having more powerful legs—a metric captured by sitting in a machine and pushing one foot as hard and fast as possible against a pedal—is associated with relatively better cognition 10 years later, measured by performance on tests of memory and processing speed.

A subset of the twin pairs who were identical and had significantly different leg power at the start of the study also had brain MRIs done 12 years later; and fitting with the above, the stronger-legged twins had significantly more grey matter and greater activation in certain brain regions during cognitive tasks, reflecting more resilient, better-aging brains. (The benefit of comparing twins? Beyond controlling for health and lifestyle factors, the researchers could also rule out genetics and early-life environment as potential drivers behind the brain differences they spotted, given these are shared between twins.)

And that’s not the only research to suggest ripped legs and a sharp mind go together. A 2018 study of 1,500-plus older adults found that those with greater leg strength performed better on tests of executive function (which assess abilities like problem-solving and paying attention). Multiple studies have also suggested a link between faster walking speed—which hinges on high leg strength—and brain power: Having a gait that’s slow or decreasing in speed is connected to drops in certain measures of cognition and greater dementia risk.

Below, Nicola breaks down why having fit legs may support brain health, especially for women, and offers a simple plan to improve leg strength and power.

Why greater leg power is linked with better brain function

Research suggests a few explanations that likely work in tandem, some of which relate to the power aspect and others, to building leg or muscle strength more generally.

What Skincare Ingredients Should and Shouldn’t Be Used Together

0

At Skincare by Alana, we’re all about maximizing the results of your skincare routine.

Without proper knowledge of the active ingredients in your product lineup, you could be missing out on potential skincare synergies.

Or worse – a bad mixture could cause irritation and reverse the intended effects of the products.

Maybe your new quarantine ritual has included watching GRWM (“get ready with me”) videos on Youtube or browsing Pinterest for at-home masks and natural skincare products to up your skincare game.

The #SkincareRoutine hashtag has been used over 10 million times already, each with a unique combination of cleansers, serums, peels, and moisturizers – that’s 10 million potentially different recommendations!

It can be tempting to want to adopt a “little bit of this, little bit of that” to combine different skincare products, but the results don’t always maximize your benefits.

Now that you have a grocery list of skincare product recommendations to choose from, it’s time to take a crash course in “Skincare Mixology 101” to learn what skincare combos you should avoid.

We’ll break it down by the top trending skincare ingredients and take a look at what works with them, and what doesn’t.

PS – we’ve done all the research for you!

Read through our article for winning skincare product recommendations.

Retinol

First, let’s talk about Retinol.

Retinolalso known as Vitamin A, works by boosting the production of elastin and collagen in the dermis while gently exfoliating the outer layer of the skin.

When used appropriately, it can do wonders for tackling fine lines, wrinkles, evening skin tone, and soothing rosacea.

Retinol is powerful on its own, but it can be too much of a good thing.

Retinol has a number of amazing benefits for many different skin types – but it’s not right for everyone.

Before you decide to incorporate retinol into your skincare routine, check out our blog or take our quiz to see if retinol is right for you!

What to Avoid with Retinol

What to Avoid with Retinol

Acne Products with Benzoyl Peroxide & Salicylic Acid

Both benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are powerful acne-fighting ingredients.

Salicylic acid is used to unclog pores and treat acne whereas benzoyl peroxide eliminates acne-causing bacteria in the skin.

However, when either are used with retinol, the ingredients cancel each other out and eliminate all the benefits.

Retinol on it’s own can unclog pores and help fight acne so if you’re already using a retinoid in your routine, consider dropping other acne-fighting products that contain Benzoyl Peroxide & Salicylic Acid and let the retinol work its magic!

AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

AHA’s are exfoliating acids that can work wonders when paired with moisturizers but without, they can dry out your skin.

Retinol, when used in excess or on already moderate to dry skin, can also cause dryness or irritation.

Instead of layering on potentially drying ingredients, it’s best to skip products containing AHA’s and instead reach for products that replenish and hydrate your skin. (more on that below!)

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is great for protecting your skin, but the pH levels required to activate vitamin C just do not work with retinol.

When these two ingredients are used together, they can cancel each other out or cause irritation.

On days where you use retinol, it’s best to leave the vitamin C for fruit juice and not on your skin.

Retinol + Impatience

The waiting game can be excruciating, we know.

But in order to get the full benefits of this superpower product, it’s best not to rush into things.

Test retinol on a small part of your skin, avoiding the delicate skin around your eyes, to see how it reacts.

Try spacing it out over a few times a week rather than every day when you first start out.

Otherwise, your skin may become overloaded and react with irritation, redness, or peeling.

Take it slow and thank retinol later!

Hyaluronic acid moisturizes skin

What Works with Retinol

Hyaluronic Acid

We mentioned that retinols can dry out the skin, so to make a winning combo, skip the AHAs and head for the hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a deeply penetrating moisturizer that can balance out any of the drying effects of retinol.

Because hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in the body, with 50% of it concentrated in your skin, it helps to restore moisture for all skin types.

It’s the dream team!

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a skincare superstar.

It’s a powerful antioxidant that helps to repair skin cells and prevent damage from UV rays and air pollution while brightening and toning.

Not only that, but Vitamin C can also help fight and repair damage caused by free radicals.

A quick aside so you can understand the true benefit Vitamin C has for your skin – let’s talk about free radicals.

You may have seen this phrase bouncing around in the descriptions of skincare products but if you’re still not 100% sure of what it means, here it is in a nutshell.

Free radicals are unstable molecules that are found in our external environment including the air, water, food, medicine, you name it.

Their instability means that they are constantly trying to bond with other atoms and molecules, including those in our bodies, causing the skin unnecessary oxidative stress.

What does this mean for your skin?

Free radicals can deteriorate the skin and speed up the aging process.

Basically, they’re exactly what you don’t want.

So when Vitamin C was shown to repair free radical damage, we were all over it.

Vitamin C is often incorporated into creams and toners but is most effective as a serum.

Vitamin C comes in many concentrations and derivatives, but looking out for “ascorbic acid” in the ingredients list is a good way to spot it.

The only trouble is that Vitamin C doesn’t always mix well with other ingredients.

What to Avoid with Vitamin C

Niacinamide AKA Vitamin B3

Niacinamide is another brightening vitamin that’s found in a variety of products.

The Vitamin C + Vitamin B3 combo is tricky but doable.

If you’re using both ingredients, you’ll want to leave at least 30 minutes in between applications to allow your skin’s pH balance to normalize.

Without this little breather, the ingredients will cancel each other out and you won’t reap the benefits of either of these awesome vitamins.

AHAs

Similar to when AHAs are used with retinol, this mixture can dry out and irritate the skin when used in tandem with vitamin C.

Together, these ingredients are either too exfoliating and can cause flaking and peeling or the acids will destabilize each other and you won’t see any effects.

Either way, it’s best to pass on the AHAs!

What Works with Vitamin C

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid also makes a great companion to vitamin C!

Studies have found that using hyaluronic acid for just 8 weeks can significantly improve skin’s texture, moisture, and firmness.

Check out our blog for 26 benefits that come just from using hyaluronic acid.

Plus it plays well with vitamin c’s delicate pH balance and helps to lock in moisture!

Vitamin E

Keep the vitamins coming!

Both vitamins A & E hail from the same antioxidant family and fight against UV damage, keeping your skin fresh and radiant.

Who doesn’t want that?

You’ll often find products that have both vitamins A and E in one, so make sure to read the ingredients label closely.

Ferulic Acid

Ferulic acid is another antioxidant found primarily in plants like oats, corn, and eggplant.

It is a powerful anti-aging ingredient that has been found to boost the effectiveness of vitamin C – we could all use a sidekick like that!

In need of some serious skin hydration?

Pair it with Vitamin C oil for some extra antioxidant love.

This 2-in-1 Vitamin C & Ferulic Acid Serum uses emblica extract, a fruit that’s high in antioxidants, to fight off free radicals and improve the elasticity, clarity, and texture of your skin.

The Bottom Line

We know that everybody has their “secret formula” to skincare and the industry is changing all the time.

One person may swear by their retinol, and another may be in love with their Vitamin C routine.

While it may seem like a good idea to get the best of both worlds by using both types of products, you may actually be doing more harm than good or neutralizing the ingredients.

The skin is extremely absorbent so in most cases, if you give your skin enough breathing room between applications, you can use products that would otherwise react poorly when applied one on top of each other.

In any case, it’s just a matter of time and paying close attention to your skin to see how it reacts.

Just like pairing wine with dinner, you need to have a good understanding of the dish and its ingredients in order to find the perfect bottle of wine that will make all the flavors sing.

What it all boils down to is a lot of research and a little bit of experimentation to find a skincare ensemble that works for you.

Additionally, micellar waters are also lightweight and generally don’t contain heavy and comedogenic ingredients that could exacerbate breakouts.

Therefore, in this article, I will recommend my top ten micellar waters for acne while considering additional factors such as accompanying skin concerns, ingredients, and overall effectiveness.

CeraVe – Hydrating Micellar Water

The CeraVe Hydrating Micellar Water, formulated with ceramides and hyaluronic acid, is a popular choice for its gentle cleansing and hydrating properties and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Choose a Good Micellar Water?

When selecting suitable micellar water for acne-prone skin, look for non-comedogenic formulations that contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, and avoid products with potential irritants such as fragrances and alcohol.

Can I Use Micellar Water If I Have Acne?

Micellar water can be beneficial for acne-prone skin because it gently cleanses the complexion without potentially clogging the pores like some cleansing oils and balms.

Can Micellar Water Make Acne Worse?

Micellar water can exacerbate acne if the product contains pore-clogging ingredients or is used as a sole cleansing method without following up with a thorough water-based cleanser.

Does Micellar Water Fade Acne Scars?

Micellar water can’t help fade acne scars because it stays on the skin’s surface briefly and doesn’t penetrate deep enough to significantly impact scarring.

However, using micellar water as part of an overall skincare routine can help keep the skin clean and healthy, potentially reducing the likelihood of new breakouts and further scarring.

Is it Bad to Leave Micellar Water on Your Face?

While it may seem convenient to leave micellar water on your face, following up with a rinse using clean water is recommended to prevent impurities and product residue from staying on the skin’s surface and clogging the pores.

ELC announces its first-ever LATAM brand investment

The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) has announced its minority investment in XINÚ, a Mexican luxury fragrance brand founded in 2017. The move is the company’s first investment in a Latin American beauty brand and reflects its continued use of early-stage partnerships to expand its global fragrance portfolio.

XINÚ is known for designs and retail environments built around regional materials and a sustainability-focused aesthetic. The brand operates in Mexico and the United States and centers its product development on craftsmanship and heritage-inspired storytelling.

“Fragrance excellence and craftsmanship are at the heart of The Estée Lauder Companies, and they drive our passion for discovering new voices in beauty,” said Stéphane de La Faverie, President and Chief Executive Officer at ELC, in a press statement.

He added that “Mexico has become a vibrant hub of fragrance innovation — a place where craftsmanship and cultural relevance come together in remarkable ways.”

Investment details

The minority stake was made through New Incubation Ventures, the company’s strategic investment and incubation arm. NIV partners with early-stage founders and supports emerging brands that show potential for category expansion or new business models.

The division also contributes to The Estée Lauder Companies’ long-term pipeline of brands across fragrances, skin care, and makeup.

De La Faverie said XINÚ “embodies this spirit, redefining contemporary luxury through authenticity, artistry, and storytelling.” He also said the investment aligns with the company’s interest in supporting talent across the region.

Founders outline brand vision

XINÚ

Peña said “this investment represents a significant milestone for XINÚ and marks the beginning of a new chapter for our brand — a pivotal moment where our unique vision for a fragrance company meets global possibility.”

She said the collaboration will help advance the brand’s goal “to push the boundaries of what fragrance can be: a medium of storytelling, a vessel for culture, and a deeply human experience that transcends borders.”

According to the release, the founders structure the brand around longevity in design and reinterpretations of ancestral practices within modern formats. Their combined experience also shapes the brand’s emphasis on object design, material choices, and multi-sensory retail environments.

XINÚ will continue to operate in Mexico and the United States while developing its product portfolio under the direction of its founding team.

Best Retinol for Sensitive Skin: The Gentle Formula That Actually Work

0

If you’ve ever wanted the benefits of retinol but feared the redness, flaking, or irritation — you’re not alone. Retinol remains the gold standard in anti-aging skincare, yet for sensitive or reactive skin, it’s often been too harsh to handle.

Until now.

Introducing Supernova Retinol Serum — the gentle retinol innovation from celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas. This award-winning formula delivers all the age-defying power of vitamin A, without compromising comfort. Think of it as retinol reimagined — results-driven, soothing, and barrier-strengthening.

Why Sensitive Skin Struggles With Retinol

Traditional retinol can transform skin — softening fine lines, fading dark spots, and boosting collagen. But for sensitive types, that same potency can trigger redness, dryness, or peeling.

That’s because most retinoids accelerate cell turnover too quickly, shocking the skin barrier before it has time to adapt.

Known for her science-meets-nature approach, Joanna Vargas set out to create a retinol that renews skin without breaking it down.

Meet Supernova: Retinol Without the Redness

The Supernova Retinol Serum pairs a gentle retinol derivative, retinyl palmitatewith botanical soothers like chamomile, apple fruit cell extractand Persian silk tree extract. Together, they deliver powerful results — smoothing, brightening, and firming — without the usual side effects.

It’s no wonder InStyle named it Best Splurge Award Winner.

“This is the formula I’m most proud of,” says Joanna. “It combines vitamin A, chamomile, and fatty acids to soothe, balance, and hydrate, while retinol promotes rapid cell renewal for visibly younger-looking skin.”

Why It Works So Well for Sensitive Skin

Every ingredient in Supernova has a specific purpose — to strengthen, calm, and renew.

  • Summer Snowflake Flower Extract – Brightens dullness and minimizes dark spots for a more even tone.

  • Persian Silk Tree Extract – Smooths fine lines, improves elasticity, and reduces puffiness.

  • Apple Fruit Cell Culture Extract – A plant-based powerhouse that supports renewal and radiance.

  • Chamomile & Cucumber Oil – Calm irritation and lock in hydration during the renewal cycle.

The result: a retinol serum that feels more like a nourishing treatment than an exfoliant — gentle enough for nightly use, effective enough for visible change.

How to Use Retinol If You Have Sensitive Skin

Even the gentlest formulas deserve a thoughtful introduction. Joanna recommends the following routine:

  1. Start slow: Use Supernova 1–2 nights a week to build tolerance.

  2. Use sparingly: Two to three drops are enough for face, neck, and décolletage.

  3. Seal with hydration: Follow with a calming moisturizer like the Twilight Night Cream.

  4. Protect daily: Always wear SPF — retinol increases sun sensitivity.

With consistent use, you’ll see smoother texture, improved tone, and renewed firmness — without the redness.

What Results to Expect

Supernova delivers the same luminous, youthful results Joanna achieves in her spa facials — now available at home.

  • Diminishes fine lines and visible signs of aging

  • Brightens dull, uneven skin tone

  • Soothes redness and reactivity

  • Deeply hydrates for a supple, radiant glow

It’s the secret weapon Joanna trusts for her most sensitive clients — and for herself before major events.

The Bottom Line

If you’ve ever thought retinol was too harsh for your skin, Supernova Retinol Serum proves otherwise. This gentle yet transformative formula restores youth, glow, and confidence — no irritation required.

Powerful, soothing, and deeply hydrating, it’s the retinol your sensitive skin has been waiting for.
