Beautykinguk: BEARDS: Schwarzkopf Got2b Beard Oil

0

Last week a massive box of the new products from the Schwarzkopf Got2b Phenomenal range was delivered – everything from a beard trimmer, hair paste, wax and sprays. As part of the package was Schwarzkopf Got2b Phenomenal Beard Oiland for the last seven days I’ve been slapping it onto my ever growing beard, stepping back and then making the other half feel the results.

Schwarzkopf Got2b Beard Oil

Given my experience with this beard oil I thought it deserved a post all to itself, so check back over the coming weeks if you want to read more reviews of the range.

What does the marketing blurb say about the beard oil under review?

‘Discover the real gentleman in you. The lightweight conditioning oil softens and tames your beard, leaving it well-groomed and non-greasy.’

I had no idea that this sat firmly in the budget range of grooming products (it’s RRP is £4.07 for 75ml) but prior experience with the got2b hair styling range meant that I had some pretty high hopes. Had I seen the price beforehand I would have expected little.

So what did the product do? Well, it surprised me immensely from the moment it left the bottle and for hour after hour later. Why? Well, many reasons. The first being the silky smooth oil that really could not be simpler to apply. Two to three pumps from the dispenser should be enough according to the directions but given the longer length of my facial foliage I use two to three on the beard on my cheeks and chin and another two to massage into the shaft of the hair that hangs about five inches down from under my chin and on my neck.

The oil is a lot thinner than pretty much every oil I’ve ever used before but this helps with the absorption into the hair and within a matter of seconds you’ll hardly know that you’ve applied it – it isn’t greasy as promised and washing it off your palms is much, much easier than other premium brands.

The results are out of this world – after three days of using this my beard was noticeably softer to the touch, and I mean really soft so much so that I spent most of last week stroking my beard. Normally if using oil on my beard this would result in residue bein transferred to my fingers and the risk of oil stains on my clothing but not with this – excellent.

Schwarzkopf Got2b Beard Oil
The beard some six hours after using Schwarzkopf Got2b Phenomenal Beard Oil

While much runnier than normal this doesn’t detract from the hold it provides when styling the beard – I’ve found that it keeps my long beard in place for a good seven hours before the hairs start to lift up off my face and look untidy. That’s much better than oils you can find yourself paying upwards of £20 for elsewhere.

They say that the Got2b range is truly phenomenal and when it comes to the beard oil I’m inclined to agree. Not only can you pick this up for under £5 when fully priced (you can get it from Superdrugor just £3) it also leaves you feeling like you’ve just stepped out of the barber’s chair. I has a fragrance that will throw you back to your childhood (it reminds me of the smell of Barbicide used by barbers) while also taming your beard – it softens so well, in fact, better than any other beard oil I’ve used and it keeps my fairly long beard well and truly under control.

Price, availability and results taken into consideration and pow, you have an absolute belter of a beard oil.

HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Industry reacts to passing of H.R. 5371

0

The latest federal spending package delivers a long-awaited shift in how the United States regulates over-the-counter sunscreen ingredients. Folded into H.R. 5371, which President Trump signed on November 12, are new mandates that broaden the evidence FDA can rely on, require progress reporting on nonclinical testing alternatives and set the parameters for the forthcoming sunscreen final administrative order.

For manufacturers and suppliers, the changes signal movement on issues that have stalled UV-filter innovation for more than a decade.

New federal requirements for OTC sunscreen oversight

H.R. 5371 revises FDA’s annual reporting timeline for monograph activity. The statute directs that “Not later than 120 calendar days after the end of each fiscal year” the agency must issue its report, the legislation stated, “by striking ‘section 3861(b) of the CARES Act’ and inserting ‘section 6502 of the Over-the-Counter Monograph Drug User Fee Amendments’.”

Beginning in fiscal year 2026, FDA must expand the detail included in these reports. The act requires disclosures on the number of proposed and final orders across Tier 1, Tier 2, specified safety and GRASE finalization categories, as well as “the average timeline for processing OTC monograph order requests, in the aggregate and by submission type, in the previous fiscal year,” the text stated.

The report must also include updates on adverse event surveillance, analytical tool development, facility registrations and fee payments.

The law establishes new evidence and testing standards for topical active ingredients. It directs that the Secretary shall “utilize standards that allow for the use of real-world evidence, as appropriate, as part of a comprehensive evaluation of scientific evidence to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of such active ingredients,” according to the legislation.

FDA must also consider alternatives to animal testing, and the act notes that the Secretary shall “consider the types of nonclinical tests described in paragraphs (1) through (4) of the first subsection (z) of section 505, or any other alternative to animal testing that the Secretary determines appropriate,” the bill stated.

For sunscreen, the forthcoming final administrative order must “account for historical data regarding the safety of sunscreen active ingredients that have previously been accepted for marketing in the United States,” the legislation added, while incorporating evidence standards consistent with SPF 15 and higher broad-spectrum protection.

Industry reactions

Implications for nonclinical testing

Stakeholders across safety science say the updates could make sunscreen development more feasible for US manufacturers. CosmeticsDesign spoke to industry expert Dr. Jane Yoo, who said the change is notable because “FDA now has to issue annual reports regarding the agency’s progress in allowing non-clinical testing alternatives to animal testing for the consideration of sunscreen active ingredients,” adding that companies have faced substantial cost and feasibility concerns when relying on legacy testing requirements.

The timing of implementing alternative methods is also drawing attention. Dr. Yoo said, “within a year of the law’s enactment, FDA must issue new draft guidance on how sponsors can use nonclinical testing alternatives to animal testing, as appropriate, to meet safety and efficacy standards for sunscreen products,” noting that several laboratory platforms, including skin-on-chip technologies, are already available.

Dr. Yoo said the law also strengthens expectations for how FDA evaluates sunscreen ingredients. She said “the new law must now: (i) account for historical data regarding the safety of sunscreen active ingredients that have previously been accepted for marketing in the United States; (ii) account for the role of broad spectrum sunscreens with a SPF of 15 or higher in effective skin cancer prevention; and (iii) incorporate the certain evidence and testing standards for sunscreen active ingredients, including real world evidence.”

Trade group perspective

In a statement, industry association Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) said the legislation reinforces the importance of a modernized regulatory framework. The organization and its member companies “applaud the passage of H.R. 5371, which includes full-year funding for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” the statement said, adding that the measure supports the agency’s ability to safeguard public health while fostering innovation.

PCPC also highlighted the evidence flexibility introduced under the updated OTC monograph program. The organization said “the OMUFA reauthorization includes critical language enabling FDA to consider broader evidence when evaluating the safety and efficacy of topical products such as sunscreen,” adding that this contributes to ongoing work toward acceptance of non-animal methods.

The group also pointed to broader industry regulatory priorities supported in the bill. PCPC said H.R. 5371 includes dedicated funding for FDA to continue MoCRA implementation, along with a requirement for a congressional report on Good Manufacturing Practices and fragrance allergen labeling rulemaking.

Advocacy groups push for rapid adoption

Advocacy groups focused on animal-free testing say Congress’ direction to FDA reflects rising expectations for nonclinical science. Jeffrey Brown, a PETA scientist, said in a press statement that the vote demonstrates that “Congress agrees with PETA and tens of thousands of PETA supporters.”

Brown continued: “the FDA must prioritize non-animal test methods for evaluating sunscreens and must expand access to modern, effective sunscreens to enhance protection against skin cancer,” adding that the group met with lawmakers earlier this year.

Noting that scientific tools needed for such a shift are already established, he said, “we have sent multiple letters to the agency, urging it to act swiftly by collaborating with sunscreen manufacturers and other scientific experts who have spent decades developing reliable cell- and computer-based test methods to assess sunscreen safety,” adding that human-relevant approaches could reduce reliance on outdated animal models.

The legislation further reinforces expectations for the agency, and the FDA “must fulfill its responsibility to use the best, most human-relevant science to protect the public, rather than insisting that companies conduct decades-old animal tests that have been shown not to protect human health,” he asserted.

Bentonite Clay Hair Mask | Hair Care & Advice

0

We may have the answer to all your hair woes and the best part is, it might already be in your beauty stash. You’ve probably heard of the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask (and if you haven’t, welcome to the internet!) It’s one of Amazon’s best-selling beauty products and a holy grail in the skincare community.

The cult-favourite has amassed thousands of 5-star reviews on Amazon and Youtube, and even celebrities, like Khloe Kardashian and Mindy Kaling, have raved about its incredible benefits. But, did you know this skin saviour could also be used in your hair?

This DIY hair clay mask gained popularity after TikTok user @curlsbykeish posted a video using the clay mask to bring her curls back to life. The video has racked up over 18 million views and inspired tons of TikTok users to try the clay mask in their hair. The star of the hair mask is bentonite clay, a mineral-rich clay that will cleanse, strengthen and define your curls in just one step. Below, we’re giving you this inside scoop on this multi-tasking hair mask.

What is Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay is a natural clay that is formed from volcanic ash. It has been used to purge impurities from the hair, skin, and body for hundreds of years. The multi-purpose clay has been used to detox skin, heal infections or acne, and even treat stomach issues. Today it is formulated in many skincare and cosmetic products and you can find it in products like shampoo, acne treatments, and even toothpaste.

Bentonite clay is special from other clays because it has negatively charged molecules. Most toxins found in the hair, skin, and body have positively charged molecules. When activated with water or apple cider vinegar, the clay produces an ionic charge that attracts and removes toxins from your hair, skin, and body. It also contains natural minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron.

Fun Fact: Bentonite clay gets its name from Fort Benton, Wyoming, where there are large deposits of it. But, it’s found all over the world. It’s also called Montmorillonite clay, named after a region in France which has a lot of it.

Benefits of Using Bentonite Clay Hair Mask

Bentonite clay has tons of amazing hair benefits from enhanced shine to curl-defining effects. Here are some of the “mane” benefits:

  • Draws out impurities from your hair and scalp. When activated with water or apple cider vinegar the clay has a negative charge that attracts positively charged toxins, like product build-up to give your hair a deep cleanse. Essentially, the hair clay acts as a vacuum for your hair follicles for the five to 20 minutes that it’s on.

  • Promotes Hair Growth. Bentonite clay is filled with minerals like sodium, potassium, and calcium that are essential for hair growth. Using this hair mask weekly will fortify your hair with these essential minerals and prevent breakage. If you’re looking to immediately add length to your hair, add in some hair extensions. They come in different styles and colours to replicate your natural hair. Your extensions deserve just as much love as your natural hair, so keep them tangle free with the Luxy Loop Brush.

  • Eliminates Dandruff. If you struggle with dandruff, apply the mask to your scalp to soak up excess sebum and kill the fungus and bacteria that cause dandruff. The deep clean will remove dead skin and toxins so that healthy hair can grow. It’s the perfect way to maintain a healthy scalp.

  • Enhances Shine. If you use a lot of dry shampoo or thick products in your hair routine it can create a film on your strands that gives your hair a grey tone. If you don’t cleanse the buildup from your hair it can hinder your hair’s natural ability to shine. Removing the buildup will also allow your hair to absorb your products better.

  • Softens and Conditions Hair. The minerals in bentonite clay will soften and condition your tresses, this means less tangles, more manageable hair, and less breakage! It’s great for heat-damaged or colour-treated hair.

  • Defines Curls. Curly girls swear by bentonite clay for their curls because it helps to clump them together and define them. Use the hair clay before a wash and go and you’ll be amazed by how bouncy your curls look.

Benefits for Natural Hair

Bentonite clay is a favourite in the natural and curly hair community, because it has moisturizing, conditioning, and clarifying properties and can remove buildup. It makes an excellent addition to a curly hair regimen. Natural hair tends to be dry so it needs lots of thick, moisturizing products which can leave a film on the hair and weigh down the delicate strands. Using the hair clay will clarify your hair which will allow your other products to work better, and help with curl clumping and shine. It’s especially great to clarify your hair and scalp before or after it’s been in a protective style.

Natural hair is very delicate and can break easily. The bentonite hair clay has sodium, potassium, and calcium- which are minerals that are essential for hair growth. When applied to your scalp it can also remove dead skin cells and cleanse follicles, which aids in healthy hair growth.

Benefits for Low Porosity Hair

If you have low porosity hair, bentonite clay will be your new best friend. Low porosity hair has an excess of positively charged ions which can make your hair look dull, frizzy, and difficult to absorb products. Bentonite clay has negatively charged ions and when applied to the hair can neutralize the positively charged ions. The result is frizz-free, shiny hair.

How to Make a Bentonite Clay Hair Mask

Now that you’re familiar with the benefits of bentonite clay it’s time to add this hair mask into your hair care routine. The main ingredient for this DIY is the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask, which you can purchase on Amazon or at most health food stores. Here’s everything else you’ll need to get started:

Ingredients:

  • Non-metal bowl, measuring cup mixing utensils (using metal can activate the clay before it reaches your hair, reducing its ability to detoxify your hair)
  • ½ cup of bentonite clay powder (we recommend using the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask)
  • 3-9 tbsp of water (dependent on whether you add other liquids)
  • 6 tbsp of unfiltered apple cider vinegar (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons of your favorite hair oils, such as coconut, castor, jojoba or argan oil (optional)

Directions:

Step 1:

To make the bentonite clay hair mask, add ½ cup of bentonite clay powder into a non-metal bowl.

Step 2:

Next, dilute the apple cider vinegar with water: three parts water to one part apple cider vinegar. This step is super important because apple cider vinegar is very acidic and can irritate your scalp if it is not diluted. Apple cider vinegar has tons of amazing hair benefits, it treats scalp conditions like dandruff, improves shiness, and increases moisture retention.

Step 3:

Next, combine bentonite clay and diluted apple cider vinegar into the bowl and mix until you get a yogurt-like consistency.

Step 4:

The last step is to add your favorite hair oils for extra hair benefits. Some of our favorites are coconut oil, to hydrate hair and lock in moisture, pracaxi oil, to strengthen and protect hair, and grapeseed oil, to stimulate hair growth and soften brittle hair.

How to Use It

When your mask is ready, section your hair, and saturate each section with the mask. The mask should be applied to damp or wet hair with focus on the scalp. Keep a spray bottle handy so you can mist any parts of your hair that dry out before you can work the mask through. Once your hair is fully coated, you can clip it up or cover with a plastic cap or heat cap for extra penetration. A hooded dryer or steamer can also be used.

The mask should be left on for at least five and up to 25 minutes to soak up all the benefits. Unfortunately, this isn’t the type of mask you can leave-in and run errands with, but it’s perfect for an at-home spa day!

After the treatment, you can shampoo and condition your hair as you normally would. It’s important that you make sure all the hair clay is removed from your hair before moving on to the next step. We love to follow up with a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment after the hair clay to give our strands a boost of hydration!

When it comes to how often you can use the hair clay, we like to apply the same rule of thumb for bentonite clay masks for your hair and skin. You should only use this treatment once a week or whenever you feel like your hair and scalp need a deep cleanse!

Got leftovers? Not to worry! If you got a little too excited and made way more than you need, you can always use the extras on your face and detox your pores and curls at the same time. Like anything you apply to your skin, make sure you do a patch test before slathering it all over your face.

If you still have leftovers you can store your bentonite clay in a closed lid container in the fridge for up to a week- longer than that and you risk it growing bacteria (yuck!)

Side Effects

Bentonite clay hair masks have tons of amazing hair benefits, but it can dry out your hair. That’s why we recommend only using this mask once a week, because over cleansing your hair and scalp could lead to more oil production.

The Final Verdict

It’s safe to say that we are absolutely obsessed with this simple but effective hair clay that cleanses your scalp and strengthens your hair. With most new products it will take a few uses to really notice a difference in your hair however, this affordable treatment will leave your hair moisturized, hydrated, and frizz-free after the first wash. What more could you ask for?

Have you tried the bentonite clay hair mask before?

Nat Kringoud has Hormone Health – LYING

LAMAV Meets Nat Kringoudis: A Conversation on Natural Health

Here at LAMAV, we’ve always taken a holistic approach when it comes to skin and beauty – understanding the importance of balancing inner and outer health. And when it comes to women, hormonal health is at the top of the priority list. While we may not be experts in hormonal health, we were lucky enough to recently gain some expert guidance from The Hormone Revolutionist – Nat Kringoudis on lifestyle changes you can make in your daily life to support healthy hormones.

Your go-to for Hormones and Women’s Health, Nat holds degrees in Health Sciences, Chinese Herbal Medicine, and Acupuncture, sharing her expert insights through her Women’s Natural Health Clinic, best-selling books, award winning podcast and social media community.

1. Can you share a little bit about your personal journey to Women’s Health and what inspired you to get involved in the health and wellness space?

My journey began with studies in biosciences, but I found myself seeking deeper answers about women’s health. This led me to Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, opening my eyes to holistic approaches. In 2003, I founded The Pagoda Tree in Melbourne to support women in understanding their bodies and achieving hormonal balance. From there everything else snowballed – we initially focused on fertility but now I support women through all stages and phases starting with pre-teens right through to post menopause.

2. As Founder of Melbourne’s Leading Natural Women’s Health Clinic – The Pagoda Tree, Founder of M Body & Daysy Australia, best-selling author, and speaker with a popular social media account, how do you prioritise health amongst your busy schedule?

Prioritising health starts with my morning ritual: checking emails due to international commitments, a gym session and dedicating time from 9-10am for meditation or reflection. (all once the kids are out the door) It’s about creating non-negotiable moments to take care of myself amidst a busy schedule. If I don’t do these things, there’s a chance the whole family suffers – health is the priority.

3. Your areas of specialty span across multiple areas of Women’s Health, with degrees in Health Sciences, Chinese Medicine, and Acupuncture. Is there an area of Women’s Health that you enjoy practicing the most?

I’m passionate about empowering women to understand their hormonal health at every stage but ultimately in the teen and early adult years as these are so foundational to long term health. Helping women decode their hormones and achieve balance at every stage of life is incredibly rewarding.

4. If women believe their hormones may be out of balance, what are some of the first steps they should take to regain hormone health?

First, listen to your body and recognise signs of imbalance. Consulting with a practitioner who understands both traditional and modern approaches can provide personalised guidance. Incorporating natural therapies, nutrition, and lifestyle changes can also be beneficial.

5. What are some of the most common factors affecting women’s health and hormones?

They are all modern day factors – stress, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, and exposure to environmental toxins are common factors. Additionally, the use of hormonal contraceptives and a sedentary lifestyle can disrupt hormonal balance.  Most of these things we don’t necessarily connect the dots as being triggers for imbalances.

6. What are 3 things women can incorporate into their daily or weekly routine to assist with hormone health?

  1. Weight training for supporting metabolism, muscle, bone, cardiovascular and cognitive health – a total game changer

  2. Prioritising protein and good fats with every meal.  Hormones are made of fat and protein but more so, protein helps support muscle health too.  It truly is king.

  3. Stress relieving practices – support your mitochondria (the energy source of your cells) at all costs especially as we age.  This might include walking with the sunrise, meditation and prayer, socialising (if it isn’t stressful), having fun, sleeping…

7. How do you encourage your clients while working towards their health and wellness goals? Are there any specific strategies or techniques that you find to be most effective?

I emphasise education and empowerment, helping clients understand their bodies.  I truly want to be irrelevant in my patients life, if I do my job well – they should only need me for maintenance or if anything changes. Setting realistic goals and celebrating small victories keeps motivation high – we often focus on the ‘prize’ rather than the process and progress.  We need to document each step to keep motivated and on the path. I also do believe that personalised plans that align with individual lifestyles are key to sustained success.

8. Are there any particular resources or books that you recommend to clients who are seeking guidance on improving their overall wellbeing?

Yes, my books! “Beautiful You” especially offers insights into natural approaches to women’s health. Additionally, “The Wellness Collective” podcast has had over 1.5 million downloads and counting and I really love that it features discussions with experts on various health topics.

9. If you could turn back time and offer advice to your younger self, what words of wisdom would you provide?

Trust your intuition and be patient with your journey. Every experience, even the challenging ones, contributes to growth and understanding.

10. Can you share any upcoming projects or initiatives that you are working on? What can our readers look forward to from you?

I’m continually developing resources to support women’s health, including new masterclasses and expanding the reach of my products.  We have some exciting things in store – hopefully a new book, continuing to grow the podcast and my membership too!

How to Use Vitamin C in a Skincare routine?

0

Vitamin C skincare has been increasing in popularity over the past few years. We are seeing more and more products hit the shelves featuring it as a key ingredient in a variety of product types, from cleansers to moisturizers to even vitamin C serums. Thanks to the incredible benefits vitamin C provides to the skin, it is no wonder everyone wants to get their daily dose! If you are looking to incorporate a topical vitamin C product into your daily skincare routine, keep reading to learn more about how you can easily add this ingredient to your regimen and why you’ll want to!

Using Vitamin C in Skincare

When you are excited to try a new skincare ingredient, it can be tempting to search for it in every single product you pick up so you can load your skin up with its benefits. However, no one ingredient will be able to address all your skin concerns effectively. Instead, you would be better served to add vitamin C into your regular routine by simply adding it in one or two of your products and using the products before or after the vitamin C to enhance its benefits. Here are some tips for selecting the best vitamin C products for your routine.

Cleansers

As you select a cleanser, bear in mind that its primary purpose is to remove dirt, oil, makeup, and other debris from the surface of your skin. This helps to prepare your skin for the products and ingredients that follow in your skincare regimen. There are many vitamin C infused cleansers currently available which can deliver some of the powerful benefits of vitamin C products. However, the concentration of vitamin C in a cleanser will be substantially less than what is found in other types of products. As such, it will take regular use over an extended period of time to see noticeable results of the vitamin in your cleanser. Our recommendation would be to use a vitamin C cleanser to help maintain the benefits to your skin, but it is not the best choice for the initial introduction of vitamin C to your routine.

Toners

Typically designed to remove any remaining dirt left on your face after cleansing, toners can also help to hydrate and condition your skin, allowing products applied after to be more easily absorbed. When found in a toner, vitamin C can help to balance the skin so it is more receptive to other treatments while giving environmentally stressed skin a refreshing boost of hydration. Still, toners will not have a high concentration of vitamin C in their formula, and as a result, it will take some time before significant changes to your skin are seen as a result.

Exfoliators

Perhaps one of the most popular products to feature vitamin C as an ingredient are exfoliants. First, regular exfoliation helps to slough away dead skin cells on the surface of your skin which opens your pores and allows any vitamin C present in the product formula to penetrate deeper, making it more effective. However, vitamin C is also considered a natural exfoliant which means that when it is present in the formula of an exfoliating product, such as the ExfoliKate® Intensive Exfoliating Treatmentit can help boost the exfoliating power.

Serums

Generally speaking, facial serums tend to be formulated with only one or two ingredients as its focus. These ingredients will be found at a higher concentration than what is seen in other products so that the serum is able to deliver obvious benefits to your skin in a much shorter time frame. For this reason, we recommend adding a vitamin C serum to your routine if you are trying to maximize the benefits a product can deliver. The Kate Somerville +Retinol Vita C Power Serumfor example, is specially formulated using both retinol and vitamin C to combat the visible signs of aging while simultaneously brightening skin tone. We also have a Kx Active Concentrates Vitamin B3 + Vitamin C Serum designed to improve tone, texture and clarity as it brightens, targeting discoloration and unevenness while enhancing radiance and luminosity.

Moisturizers

Moisturizers act as a seal, sealing in all previous skincare steps and ingredients to maintain skincare benefits throughout your day and evening. And while it’s not as powerful as a serum, incorporating a moisturizer formulated with vitamin C as a primary ingredient can be a great way to deliver a daily dose of the nutrient to your skin. That’s why we developed our +Retinol Vitamin C Moisturizer! Clinically formulated with retinol to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while vitamin C helps to brighten and smooth uneven skin tone as you sleep, you wake up to firmer, smoother, glowing skin.

Masks

Facial masks with vitamin C have become a popular addition to many people’s skincare routines, and for good reason. Adding a mask with vitamin C to your routine can provide numerous benefits for your skin and is a simple way to efficiently work Vitamin C into your skincare routine. Our Mega C Brightening Facial is formulated with 30% vitamin C, which is the highest level of potency in our vitamin C offering which means maximum results with minimal effort. Apply this mask for 20 minutes once or twice a week to see visible results in just two weeks.

Finding the Right Product

There are a lot of factors to consider as you look best vitamin C skincare products for your needs and routine. Beyond the type of product, you will need to make choices about the form of vitamin C found in the product, the packaging, any accompanying ingredients, and your skin type.

In skincare, vitamin C is rarely listed as such on a product label. This is because the powerful ingredient has a few different forms which can be used for topical application. First, there is ascorbic acid which is the highest potency used in skincare products and absorbs quickly into the skin, making it a popular choice in formulas. Vitamin C can also be listed as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) which is actually a derivative of the vitamin that is water-soluble and more effective in lower concentrations. Though either of these types of vitamin C will effectively deliver results, ascorbic acid will likely be a better selection for serums or moisturizers while MAP would be most effective when used in a cleanser or toner.

Beyond the type of vitamin C used, the actual packaging of the product can influence the effectiveness of it. As a skin care ingredient, vitamin C is volatile and can destabilize quickly when it comes into contact with oxygen or sunlight. As a result, you will want to look for products with opaque glass or plastic packaging to ensure that sunlight will not reduce the effectiveness of the ingredients. It is also best to look for a product with a pump or other mechanism that will limit the product’s exposure to air. Vitamin C’s temperament is also essential when considering the other ingredients listed alongside it in any given product. For example, vitamin E or ferulic acid are commonly used to help stabilize vitamin C and increase the longevity of the product’s effectiveness. Plus, these ingredients may help to enhance the benefits of vitamin C, giving your skin an extra boost of nutrients.

Vitamin C is typically considered safe for all skin types, though everyone’s skin will react differently to new products. For those with sensitive skin, especially, it is best to find a product with a simple formula and introduce it into your routine slowly. This will help you monitor your skin’s reaction and quickly discontinue use of the product if necessary. However, if you react to one type of vitamin C, you may have more success with another form so do not be afraid to experiment in order to find the best product for your skin.

Why Use Vitamin C for Skincare?

Vitamin C is actually a powerful antioxidant known for maintaining the health of connective tissue throughout your body, including your skin. It is able to deliver many benefits to the skin when applied topically. Here are a handful of the reasons you should consider adding vitamin C into your daily skincare routine.

Protection from Free Radicals

Simply put, free radicals are destructive molecules found throughout our environment which can wreak havoc on our skin and cause harmful effects. Produced as the result of pollutants such as smog, dust, cigarette smoke, and even the sun itself, free radicals can cause skin discoloration as well as a loss of skin volume and resiliency. Fortunately, the antioxidant properties of vitamin C help to neutralize the effects of these molecules and minimize the harm done to your skin.

Brightens Complexion

Vitamin C is a natural acid which can work on the skin as a gentle exfoliant, helping to slough away layers of dead skin, revealing smoother and more even skin beneath. If used on a consistent and regular basis, vitamin C can have some anti-aging effects such as softening the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles, minimizing the visibility of dark spots or other discoloration such as hyperpigmentation. The result is a brighter and more youthful complexion.

Reduces Inflammation

As a natural anti-inflammatory active ingredient, vitamin C can also help to reduce redness and inflammation of the skin which can develop in conjunction with a variety of skin conditions including acne, sensitivity, or psoriasis. By this same mechanism, vitamin C is also thought to promote the healing of the skin and help improve the appearance of acne scarring or other surface imperfections.

Addresses UV Photodamage

Unfortunately, no matter how much sunscreen we wear on a daily basis, our skin still suffers some sun damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. This is known as UV photodamage and can manifest on the skin as patches of discoloration such as freckles or larger areas of hyperpigmentation. When applied to the skin, vitamin C can help strengthen the skin and minimize the effects of sun exposure. This helps to even your skin tone and texture, providing a youthful glow.

When to see results from using Vitamin C?

Using a topical vitamin C skincare product can improve the health and appearance of your skin. Studies show improvements can be noticeable after a few weeks of regular use. To maintain healthy skin, remember to also include sun protection and choose a product suitable for your skin type to avoid skin irritation [1].

If you’ve decided to incorporate vitamin C into your daily skincare routine, make sure you adequately research the unique products you’ll add. Each brand and type of product is formulated differently which can impact its effectiveness so take care to read labels, assess packaging, and evaluate your skin’s reaction. It may take some time, but once you find the best product selection for your unique skin and its needs, you will be happy with the results!
