How to Revisit Playful Trends (Without Looking Like You’re Chasing Youth) — Inside Out Style

0

twitterpinterestlinkedinmail

It’s absolutely possible to revisit playful trends as a wise woman without looking like you’re clinging to your twenties (or teens). In fact, embracing elements of fun in your outfits – whether that’s a touch of whimsy, a nostalgic accessory, or a pop of bold colour – can be an expression of confidence, not immaturity.

I’ll admit, there have been times I’ve hesitated to wear something I truly loved, worried it might seem “too much.”  But then I’ve told myself to get over myself and that style is not just for the young and that it’s guidelines not rules and the fashion police will never come to take me away!

Style isn’t about age – it’s about alignment. You’re allowed to revisit playful trends. You’re allowed to love glitter sneakers, novelty earrings, or a touch of leopard print. The secret? Doing it with intention, not apology.

When you revisit playful trends with self-awareness and polish, you’re not chasing youth – you’re showcasing joy. Let’s explore how to do that with style integrity.

Playfulness ≠ Immaturity

There’s a big difference between dressing young and dressing with youthfulness. One tries to erase age. The other celebrates life and vitality.

I do pilates and yoga at a studio where the average age is under 30.  Sure, I don’t rock a crop top like they do (nobody needs to see my stomach), but I’m always getting compliments on the colour of my activewear (cos I know what colours make me look good).  When I’m attempting the “bird of paradise from side-angle pose” in yoga class, yes, I may fall over (and often do), but I’m giving it a red-hot go, and you know, it’s fun for me, never embarrassing and in fact sometimes I can even do it pretty well now with all the practice I’ve put in.  No matter what you do in life, you want to add play to your life if you want to be happier.  And if you’re not sure what a bird of paradise is – check out this short video!

As a wise woman, you’ve earned the right to express yourself however you please. But many of us hold back, fearing we’ll look like we’re trying too hard. Here’s the truth: when you revisit playful trends with personality and polish, you’re not regressing – you’re revealing.

Just think of Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in And Just Like That…. She wore tulle, bold prints, and sky-high heels with absolute confidence – not because she was trying to look younger, but because she knew her style DNA. That’s the kind of joyful, personality-driven fashion I’m talking about. She made playfulness her signature, and that’s what made her unforgettable.

5 Ways to Revisit Playful Trends with Polish

1. Start Small with Statement Accessories

Playful doesn’t have to mean loud. A pair of floral sneakers, a bag shaped like a camera, or cherry-red glasses can say “I don’t take myself too seriously” while still looking intentional.

Start with:

  • Novelty earrings
  • Patterned scarves
  • Playful brooches
  • Graphic bags
  • Glasses frames in signature colours

I have a selection of fun, playful accessories, including the brooches below.

Anyone who knows me personally knows that I’m crazy about my whippets, which is why I love my Sass Artworks whippet jewellery.  They are fun and express me.

When you choose accessories that say something about you, these pieces add personality without overpowering your outfit.

2. Use Colour with a Wink

Pastels, bold primaries, or even neon touches can work beautifully—if they align with your colour palette and style recipe. A dopamine-dressing pop of colour says “I love life,” not “I wish I were 25.”  Colour brings joy, and don’t you wamt more joy in your life?  Avoid dressing head to toe in neutrals; instead, embrace your best colours.

3. Balance Trend with Classic Silhouette

Wearing a trendy print or fabric in a well-cut, classic shape (like a blazer or shift dress) grounds the look and adds sophistication. The reverse works too: keep your colour palette classic but experiment with shape or styling.

Try this mix:

  • A tulle skirt with a crisp button-down
  • A sequin tee under a structured jacket
  • Converse with a tailored pant

It’s all about balance.

4. Tap Into Nostalgia Without Time Travel

Loving something that reminds you of the 80s or 90s? Great. Just don’t try to recreate your teenage wardrobe. Instead, borrow elements: a high-waisted jean, a touch of neon, a scrunchie in luxe velvet.

The rule: modernise one element. Keep the rest sleek and current.

5. Let Your Personality Lead

This is the most important rule. If you’re Classicyou might try subtle whimsy like a pearl necklace with a twist. If you’re Dramaticgo bold with shape or contrast. If you’re Creativewell—go wild. You set the tone.

Knowing your style personality helps you revisit playful trends in a way that feels authentic. You’ll never feel like you’re in costume.

Need help decoding your style personality? It’s a key component of my 7 Steps to Style journey.

Age Doesn’t Cancel Play

If your outfit makes you smile, sparks creativity, or helps you feel more you—that’s the only permission you need. When you revisit playful trends with self-awareness and style intelligence, you’re not chasing youth. You’re inviting your personality to the surface.

So yes, you can wear the rainbow sneakers. Just pair them with confidence.

Rosemary Essential Oil Benefits

0

Ingredient:

Rosemary

What’s the fancy Latin name for rosemary?

Rosemary officinalis

Where does rosemary come from?

It grows everywhere now, but it originated on the cliffs of the Mediterranean; the name rosemary means “dew of the sea”. Most rosemary essential oil is steam-distilled in Corsica, Tunisia, and Spain.

What are the aromatherapy benefits of rosemary?

Rosemary is used to clear the mind and promote concentration. It would be an excellent oil to use in a diffuser in your kid’s room during homework hours! Combined with peppermint and lavender, rosemary can be used to help alleviate headaches. Rosemary is also an excellent oil to use first thing in the morning, to brighten up your sleepy brain, and fortify your energy for the coming day. It is associated with the 3rd eye chakra in yoga, where clarity resides.

What are the skin benefits of rosemary?

Rosemary is antimicrobial, and can help alleviate aches and pains or sore muscles when used topically in a balm or an oil. It is used widely in hair preparations, as it has been shown to help with dandruff and stimulate healthy hair growth. Massaged into nail beds, rosemary can help strengthen and support nail growth.

Are there different types of rosemary essential oil?

Not all rosemary is the same. It comes in different “chemotypes”: camphor-borneol, cineole, and verbenone, which has a gentle scent that most closely resembles the fresh herb itself and is the best for skincare. Rosemary is not recommended for children under six, people with high blood pressure, seizure disorders, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Fun facts about rosemary:

  • Rosemary symbolized love and death in ancient Greece and Rome, and was used at funerals to promote loving remembrance.
  • Rosemary was used in one of the earliest known perfumes, Hungary Water, created for the Queen of Hungary in the late 14th century.
  • Rosemary is part of the mint family.
  • Rosemary plants can grow to over six feet tall!

Which Osmia Skincare products contain rosemary?

We use a rosemary CO2 extract as an antioxidant in loads of products like our body soaps and our body mousses to keep them fresh and protect our oils. Our new Rosemary Scalp Oil features a bright, vibrant rosemary verbenone essential oil.

With love and a dose of refreshing, renewing rosemary,

Currentbody LED Hair Growth Helmet Review With Photos

0

“I do think red light works and it’s another tool in your tool belt,” says Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City who specializes in hair loss, who uses red-light treatments on patients in his office. “If you have irritation or inflamed follicles, the red light puts out the fire a little bit. If you try to grow plants in lava, it’ll never happen.” Another thought is that it can reduce levels of certain hormones associated with androgenetic alopecia, like dihydrotestosterone, or DHT.

And it’s not just anecdotal. One study found that combining red light therapy with minoxidil and finasteride improved hair density and strength around the temples by 55% in women and 74% in men. Another study showed consistent daily use over four months led to significant improvements in hair count and scalp coverage, especially in people with androgenetic alopecia.

How the Currentbody LED Hair Growth Helmet works

Let’s talk wavelengths. The helmet uses 650nm red light, which, according to dermatologists, is the sweet spot for penetrating the scalp without heating or damaging tissue. Red light at this wavelength increases blood flow and energizes the hair follicle. It can shift follicles from the resting phase into the growth phase.

But beyond the tech specs, it’s the ease of use that won me over. It’s a 10-minute treatment, three times a week. That’s it. No wires, no app syncing, no frustrating remotes—though it does have Bluetooth speakers that connect to your phone so you can listen to music or podcasts while you wait. You pop it on, it beeps to start, and again to stop. In the time it takes to scroll through your For You Page or make a matcha, you’ve completed a full treatment. And, of course, it’s non-invasive and pain-free.

Inside the helmet, flexible silicone padding ensures a snug, comfortable fit. And because the lasers are embedded throughout the dome, you get even coverage—crucial for someone like me whose thinning wasn’t just on the crown but also along the temples.

How I tested the Currentbody LED Hair Growth Helmet

I’m in my 40s and have dealt with slow, sneaky hair thinning for the past few years. Blame it on stress, genes, or my love affair with hair-tugging blowouts. I’ve tried minoxidil foam (messy), scalp serums (sticky), and hair supplements (meh). Red light therapy seemed like a passive win for new growth—if it worked.

Running a Half-Marathon With Multiple Sclerosis

0

In 2018, Karleen Roy, now in her mid 40s, started experiencing sudden, electric-shock-like pain that would stop her in her tracks—sometimes literally dropping her to the floor in the middle of high-profile celebrity events she was producing. After a year of inconclusive tests, she was eventually diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2019. In October 2025, she completed her first half-marathon. Here, she shares how advocating for herself, changing her lifestyle, and learning to move differently with MS led her to the finish line, as told to writer L’Oreal Thompson Payton.

On the outside, my life looked grand: red carpet events, lavish parties, international travel, and designer clothes. But several years ago, my body started sending me signals that something was wrong.

Around 2018, I began experiencing intense, random bouts of pain. It felt like my body was being electrocuted from the inside out. Each episode lasted between 11 and 17 minutes, and I know this because I timed them.

After months of dealing with pain, my face started shifting. It almost looked like I had Bell’s palsy, a condition that causes one side of the face to droop. At that point I knew I needed to go to the doctor. I saw my primary care doctor, multiple neurologists, a sports medicine specialist, and even a chiropractor—and not a single one could figure out what was wrong.

As I shared my symptoms, every doctor had a different theory: “Oh, it’s stress.” “Oh, you’re having a muscle spasm.” Then they would prescribe medication to take when the pain started. But I didn’t want to just numb the pain; I wanted answers.

The relief and uncertainty of an MS diagnosis

For about a year I didn’t feel heard. In 2019, I was referred to a neurologist, and she said to me, “I’m just going to prescribe you medication for a seizure, and let’s see if that works.” That was my breaking point. I completely lost my cool, which is so outside of my character. I felt awful, but that is what led to me finding the answers that I needed. After our conversation, she agreed to order one more MRI.

I was boarding a flight from New York to Los Angeles for red carpet season when my doctor’s office kept calling. When I finally answered, she said, “I hate to deliver this news to you this way, it’s MS. When you get back in town, come into the office so we can start assembling your care team.”

Even if Filthy Rose isn’t “holiday-themed,” its depth and character make it a brilliant companion for December evenings when you want something richer, warmer and personal. I absolutely love this candle and I might even be bold enough to say that it’s my all time favourite.

It has a beautiful blend of damson rose, tobacco, saffron, amyris and black pepper that gives a sophisticated, sensual, slightly edgy scent that fills the house. For Christmas, it’s far from predictable, but wonderfully atmospheric. Read: Velvet Smoke Filthy Rose Scented Candle Review.

FAQ

FAQ Icon

Do I really need special “holiday” makeup or can I use any eyeshadow palette?

You don’t need holiday-themed makeup, but palettes with richer pigment, shimmer, or bold color contrast make festive looks pop more. A neutral palette works, but holiday-specific sets often have more sparkle, depth, and creativity built in.

How do I prevent glitter fallout when using glitter eyeshadows or lip products?

Use a good eyeshadow primer first for eyes, or a lip balm + clear gloss base for glitter lips. Tap glitter gently (don’t swipe), and consider setting with a translucent powder or setting spray to lock everything in.

Are long-lasting formulas worth it for holiday events?

Yes. Parties, dinners, and photos mean long hours. Long-wear or setting-spray-friendly products help your makeup stay fresh without fading or creasing.

I’m on a budget. Is it possible to create a festive look without spending too much?

Absolutely. Kits like the Profusion or ColourPop palettes offer big bang for their buck. Pick a versatile eyeshadow palette, a neutral or shimmery lip, and a mascara, and you can still nail that festive vibe without splurging.

How do I balance bold holiday makeup with everyday wear?

Save the dramatic glitter, deep reds and greens, or heavy contour and glow for parties or photos. For everyday outings or subtle holiday vibes, go for soft shimmer, a hint of color, or a glossy lip. Layer lightly because you can always build up the look as you go.

Final Thoughts

A close-up of a person's eye with glittery black eyeliner and long eyelashes.

Christmas makeup is all about having fun with your look and leaning into the magic of the season. Whether you go for bold reds, frosty blues, soft shimmer, or a full creative character moment, the best holiday glam is the one that makes you feel confident and excited to celebrate.

Use these ideas and product picks as inspiration, but make them your own. Play with color, try something new, and don’t be afraid to add a little extra sparkle. The holidays only come once a year, so you might as well enjoy every bit of the glam.

Wishing you a magical holiday filled with love, laughter, and stunning makeup.

Until next time,

Hollee

Is Summer Friday’s Clean? – Organic Bunny

0

Summer Fridays has become one of the most talked-about modern beauty brands, blending skincare and makeup with a sleek, minimalist aesthetic. Co-founded by influencers Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Ireland, the line is marketed as vegan, cruelty-free, and “clean” in the sense that it avoids parabens, sulfates, and phthalates. They’re best known for their masks, skin tints, and especially their lip care! Two of their most viral best sellers are their Lip Butter Balm and their Lip Oils, both beloved for their textures, packaging, and influencer-fueled hype. But, when you take a closer look at the ingredient lists through a stricter, more clean beauty lens, are these products truly clean and, more importantly, are they Organic Bunny approved? Let’s explore!

Right now, while supplies last, and to celebrate SO many new fun items being released by Inika, spend $60 or above in Inika today, get their Lash + Brow Serum for FREE! One of my all-time fave serums to grow fuller brows and longer lashes! Simply add your $60 worth of Inika, after coupons your total must be over $60 in Inika, and then leave a NOTE, not a coupon code, that says “BROW SERUM” and this will be added to your order FREE as long as you qualify! $43 retail value, yours today free. We only have a small amount so once this is gone, I will remove this part! Not sure what to snag? Here are all of my Inika faves!

Lip Butter Balm

First of all, the Lip Butter Balm is marketed as a rich, hydrating balm-meets-mask that smooths lips with butters like shea and murumuru. While it does contain some nourishing ingredients, what really stood out to me was that it also includes BHT, a synthetic antioxidant preservative that has been flagged for potential endocrine-disrupting effects and links to cancer in some studies! BHT is an ingredient I always avoid.

Next, we find Fragrance or parfum is also listed, which is a red flag in clean beauty because it can contain hidden hormone-disrupting chemicals and allergens. The formula also uses synthetic dyes such as Red 6 and Red 28, FD&C colors that are petroleum-derived and may contain trace heavy metals, some of which are linked to carcinogenic effects. The balm also relies heavily on petroleum-based waxes and synthetic emollients, which provide texture but don’t nourish the skin at all, all while also contributing to microplastic exposure over time! Plastic lipgloss on your lips that you lick off and consume? No thank you!

Dream Lip Oil

The Summer Friday lip oils are positioned as a lighter, glossier alternative that feels silky and hydrating, but the ingredient list tells a similar story as their lip balms, sadly. They’re loaded with petroleum-derived emollients like Hydrogenated Polyisobutene and Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin), as well as Octyldodecanol and synthetic film-forming polymers such as Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer and Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer. These ingredients are considered microplastics in clean standards as they don’t biodegrade and can accumulate in the environment and body!

The lip oils also contain Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, another synthetic antioxidant with potential links to cancer and environmental persistence. Like the balm, they use FD&C synthetic dyes, including Red 7 Lake and Blue 1 Lake, which are petroleum-derived and may contain heavy metal contaminants. While there are a few nice plant oils like jojoba and avocado mixed in, they’re overshadowed by the heavy reliance on synthetic, plastic-like ingredients that don’t align with a truly clean formulation making neither of these items Organic Bunny approved.

Why To Avoid Them?

From a health and environmental perspective, the concerns around these ingredients are well documented for the girlies who want to get into the science behind it all! Synthetic polymers and microplastics can act as carriers for endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which interfere with hormonal systems and may contribute to issues like reproductive harm, metabolic disorders, and cancer over time.

BHT has been evaluated by regulatory bodies for its endocrine-disrupting potential and has been linked to organ toxicity and tumor development at high exposures in animal studies. Synthetic dyes, particularly Red 6, Red 7, and Blue 1, are petroleum-based and may be contaminated with heavy metals that accumulate in the body with repeated exposure. Fragrance compounds are known to contain phthalates and other endocrine disruptors, often undisclosed under the catch-all term “parfum.”

When these ingredients are applied to the lips, products we inevitably ingest a little of daily, they bypass some of the body’s usual detoxification mechanisms and increase the potential for cumulative exposure so, what is best is to use a cleaner option, as often as possible! So, what can we use instead?

Cleaner Options

Thankfully, one of my favorite beauty brands just launched two almost exact dupes making this swap a no brainer! The Inika Certified Organic Tinted Lip Balm uses nourishing botanical oils like castor, jojoba, and sunflower, combined with shea butter and candelilla wax, to moisturize and protect without relying on petroleum derivatives or synthetic waxes. It’s free from BHT, synthetic dyes, and fragrance, meaning you’re not exposing yourself to endocrine disruptors, heavy metals, or irritants every time you apply. The plant-based formula supports actual lip health rather than just coating the surface, making it a safer and more nourishing daily choice!

Best For- The Inika Lip Balm is richer and more protective, formulated with butters, waxes, and plant oils to deeply nourish and seal in moisture. It’s best for dry, chapped lips or as an overnight treatment for anyone needing barrier support and comfort. I love pairing them with a lip liner for a daytime nourishing lippie!

Inika made swatches of their lip balms and oils so you get a better idea of the color below.

Similarly, the Inika Tinted Lip Oil is made with squalane, acacia collagen, and nutrient-rich plant seed oils, providing hydration and glossy shine while completely avoiding BHT, synthetic fragrances, and artificial dyes. Instead of microplastics or petroleum polymers, it relies on bioactive ingredients that soften, smooth, and support the lips over time. Together, these Inika products make excellent clean dupes, offering the same sensory experience without the health and environmental trade-offs, plus, they are gorgeous on!

Best For- The Inika Lip Oil is more lightweight and glossy, blending bakuchiol, squalane, and botanical oils to hydrate, smooth, and support lip health while adding a beautiful shine. The inclusion of bakuchiol, a gentle plant-based retinol alternative, makes it ideal for those who want anti-aging benefits and daily hydration without a heavy feel. Perfect for everyday wear and layering!

Be sure to share this with anyone into clean beauty that may be in need of a cleaner swap to their favorite Summer Friday’s lip products!

Benefits, Side Effects, and How to Use It (A Gentle Retinol Alternative)| Tips for Natural Beauty

0

I’ve tried enough retinol formulas to know that not all skin can tolerate them — especially if your skin reacts easily like mine. And if you’ve ever wanted the results of retinol without the irritation, you’ve probably searched for gentler alternatives. That’s exactly when bakuchiol became one of my favorite discoveries.Once you understand how bakuchiol works, you’ll see why it’s becoming one of the most talked-about skincare ingredients today.

1. What Is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a plant-based extract derived from the Psoralea corylifolia (babchi) plant. It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, but today it’s gaining attention as a natural, gentler alternative to retinol. What makes bakuchiol unique is that it offers many of the same visible benefits as retinol—smoothing lines, evening texture, and supporting firmness—without the common irritation, peeling, or sun sensitivity.

2. The Skin-Care Benefits of Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol has several impressive skin benefits:

  • Helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles by supporting collagen
  • Improves texture and uneven tone
  • Suitable for sensitive and reactive skin
  • Provides antioxidant protection against environmental stress
  • Pairs well with most skincare ingredients such as: Niacinamide, Hyaluronic acid ,Peptides, Vitamin C.

If you’re looking for a gentle anti-aging ingredient that doesn’t compromise your skin barrier, bakuchiol is a fantastic choice.

3. Does Bakuchiol Have Side Effects?

One of the biggest advantages of bakuchiol is how well-tolerated it is. Most people experience no irritation at all, even if their skin can’t handle retinol.

However, mild effects can still happen:

  • Slight redness
  • Temporary sensitivity
  • Mild irritation during the first week

It’s always smart to do a patch test, especially if your skin is sensitive or reactive.

4. How to Use Bakuchiol in Your Routine

Here’s how to introduce bakuchiol the right way:

Start Slowly

Use it 1–2 times per week at first.

Use It at Night

Apply after cleansing and toning, before your moisturizer.

Always Apply SPF in the Morning

Even though bakuchiol is gentler than retinol, daily sun protection is always essential.

Be Consistent

Most people see visible improvements after 4–8 weeks of regular use.

5. Should You Consult a Dermatologist Before Using It?

You can start bakuchiol on your own, but you should consider professional advice if you have:

  • Eczema
  • Rosacea
  • Active irritation
  • A diagnosed skin condition

A dermatologist can help you pair it safely with other ingredients or treatments.

6. The Future of Bakuchiol in Skincare

Bakuchiol is one of the fastest-growing ingredients in the beauty industry. Brands are now creating:

  • Bakuchiol serums
  • Bakuchiol moisturizers
  • Bakuchiol eye creams
  • Retinol + bakuchiol hybrids

Consumers want effective skincare without irritation, and bakuchiol delivers exactly that. Expect even more innovative formulas in the coming years.

8. Final Thoughts

If you want a natural, effective alternative to retinol without the irritation, bakuchiol is absolutely worth trying. It’s gentle, well-researched, and suitable for nearly all skin types. As brands continue to embrace this ingredient, you can expect even more exciting innovations that make bakuchiol a long-term favorite in the skincare world.
