The American manufacturer of packaging solutions has co-developed with the French brand a refill produced from its material Knoll Ecoform Molded Pulp.

According to Knoll Packaging This innovative refill is the result of more than three years of joint research and development. The innovation teams of the two companies worked together to design, test and validate a solution based on molded cellulose pulp capable of protecting the delicate formula of the Imperial Orchid Longevity Cream by Guerlain. “ It was necessary to create new methods to evaluate its performance and meet Guerlain’s strict quality requirements. More than 9500 samples have been produced and more than 80 leak tests have been carried out », explains Knoll Packaging.

The development required overcoming a series of functional and aesthetic challenges. Indeed, molded cellulose pulp is generally used in secondary packaging; the Knoll Ecoform solution had to be adapted to protect the product and guarantee the integrity of the cream. A polymer film has thus been integrated into the packaging to guarantee the conservation of the product.

To meet the aesthetic requirements of the luxury brand, particular attention was paid to surface treatments and the geometry of the packaging.

Knoll Packaging’s Ecoform molded cellulose pulp is produced from renewable plant-based materials, including bagasse (a by-product of sugarcane processing) and certified wood fibers.

« Our collaboration with Guerlain shows how technical innovation in packaging can accelerate the sustainable transition in the luxury sector. This launch redefines the possibilities offered by molded paste, demonstrating that it can combine high protection and prestige. This is arguably the greatest innovation in Knoll Packaging’s forty-year history. “, explain Noémy Lebound, irectrent Europe the Knol Packaging.

« Eco-design is a driver of innovation at Guerlain, and this unique cellulose refill reflects it. It opens up new perspectives for our products and, more generally, for refills in the cosmetics industry. », added Claire Coletti, Global Sustainable Development Director at Guerlain.

This innovative solution was rewarded at the Formes de Luxe Awards at the Luxe Pack Monaco trade show.
