Retin-A s one of those ingredients that has somehow become synonymous with good skincare, especially as we age all you hear is retinol this, retin-a that. And I get it! The results are seemingly real and the before and afters are convincing but… when you actually dig into what it is doing to your skin over time, it is a very different story and why I strongly stand against products with conventional retinols, most actually do more harm than help!
What Is Retin-A?
Retin-A is the brand name for Tretinoina prescription-strength synthetic form of Vitamin A. It is one of the most commonly prescribed skincare ingredients out there and dermatologists reach for it constantly for concerns like milia, fine lines, uneven texture, acne, and sun damage. It works by essentially forcing your skin cells to speed up, turning over faster than they naturally would and stimulating collagen production in the process. On paper, that sounds amazing but here is what they don’t want you to really find out!
Why It Seems To Work
Retinol forces your skin to shed and regenerate faster than it naturally would and short termthat looks incredible! Key word: short term. Smoother texture, fewer lines, a brighter complexion. People see results fast and they get hooked. And that is exactly the problem. Your skin is not actually learning to do any of this on its own. It is just becoming completely reliant on the product to function. Sound familiar? That is because it is a dependency cycle, not a solution. Yes it addresses all of these things in the short term: forces accelerated skin cell turnover, stimulates collagen and elastin production, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, fades dark spots and hyperpigmentation, and addresses milia and unclogs pores. But at what cost?! Let’s find out.
What Is Retinol Actually Doing To Your Skin?
Okay so this is the part that really is hidden! The side effects of synthetic retinol go so far beyond the initial peeling and redness phase that most people push through at the beginning. There is a much deeper pattern of long-term damage happening that simply does not get talked about enough.
Chronic use significantly disrupts the skin barrier and the damage can still be detected months after you stop using it entirely. Months! Studies even report up to 80% reduction in melanin after just one year of use. Melanin is your skin’s own natural defense against UV damage. Wild right?! Tretinoin also disrupts the diversity of your skin’s microbial ecosystem, your skin’s good bacteria, leaving it vulnerable to infection, breakouts, and inflammation.
On top of that, EWG rates retinol/Vitamin A a 9 out of 10 for ingredient hazard and flags developmental and reproductive toxicity as a high concern. Retinoids, including OTC retinol, are also widely recommended to be avoided during pregnancy, and many providers recommend avoiding them while breastfeeding out of caution.
Think of your skin as a living ecosystem of good bacteria that keeps everything balanced, protected, and resilient. When that ecosystem gets disrupted, your skin becomes so much more vulnerable to breakouts, sensitivity, and environmental damage, sometimes long after you have stopped using the product. This is not a small thing!
What Happens When You Quit?
Here is the kicker that they also never warn you about. The aftermath! Because retinol never actually teaches your skin to renew itself, the moment you stop using it, everything it was artificially propping up starts to fall away. Skin returns right back to baseline like you never used it at all. The barrier is compromised, the microbiome is disrupted, and many people experience a rebound effect of dullness, sensitivity, and wrinkles rushing back. Some are genuinely left worse off than before they ever started. It becomes a product you feel like you have to use forever just to maintain the look it created. All of that damage, all of those side effects, for results that disappear the moment you stop?!
What I Use Instead- Rosehip Seed
At almost 43, I of course, still want to age as well as I can because at the end of the day, I live in the same beauty obsessed culture as everyone else. The difference, for me is that the products I use, nourish and improve my body, versus the above doing the opposite, harm.
I will always prefer the healing power of nature as often as possible. I always opt for essential oils, botanical extracts, and nature-identical vitamins over synthetic pharmaceutical ingredients that force the skin to behave unnaturally. And the good news? You do not have to choose between results and safety!
Did you know that Rosehip Seed oil naturally contains trans-retinoic acid, which is the same active form of Vitamin A found in Retin-A, but plant-based and completely without the damage? Talk about actual luxury, it’s basically organic retinol! Plus, your skin recognizes it, responds to it beautifully, and is never harmed by it.
A study conducted in Chile applied rosehip oil to 180 patients and found it produced accelerated, smoother healing of surgical scars and burns. That speaks volumes about how powerfully this ingredient rebuilds and restores which is why I have recently added this into my beauty routine.
One of my absolute favorites is the Royal Rose CoQ10 Serum by Living Libations. Paired with CoQ10, a bioactive enzyme our bodies naturally produce but stop making enough of as we age, plus the magic of Rose Otto, Immortelle, Myrrh, and Jojoba, every single drop works to restore elasticity, stimulate collagen, fight free radicals, and protect your skin barrier. All from 11 pure plant-based ingredients with zero fillers and zero fluff. Same Vitamin A as Retin-A with zero synthetic risk, stimulates collagen without stripping the barrier, supports the microbiome instead of destroying it, no prescription, no dependency, no rebound, and completely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is what clean beauty looks like and I feel like the world has no clue it even exists!

Why risk your skin’s long-term health for results that disappear the moment you stop? When nature has already given us the same active ingredient in a form our skin actually loves? Try it and let me know what you see!
