When I first saw the Fresh Kombucha Multi-Defense Sheer UV SPF 50 PA++++ online, I thought I was hallucinating. In hindsight, I should not have been surprised. My interest in Fresh waned ever so slightly over the last decade. But since moving to Spain, I have been looking at my old favorites through a feel-good nostalgia lens. Old skincare memories are a real comfort these days. I cannot be the only one.

While visiting Poland last month, I also spotted the Fresh Kombucha Cleansing Treatment over at Sephora.pl. I wanted to bring a bottle back to Madrid so bad, but the online exclusivity and the shipping time did not line up with my short stay. Next time, for sure. After all, the Fresh Kombucha Antioxidant Essence is one of my favorite liquid steps.
Anyway, back to the Fresh Kombucha SPF 50.

This may be the very first facial sunscreen the LVMH-owned brand has ever released. As a long-time devotee (I am talking the early days, when Fresh sold Umbrian Clay shampoo, toothpaste, and a facial moisturizer called Rice Cream), I am fairly confident that is a fact. And I am not surprised the brand held the line. This kind of elegance only comes from European UV filters, the sort America has not gotten around to approving.

What UV filters are in the Fresh Kombucha SPF?
The quintet Fresh reached for is a roster of globally used filters that are safe, effective, and mostly off-limits to my American readers. The rubric below sorts them by what they guard against, UVA or UVB, and which ones the US has approved. And which ones it has not. Yet.
UVB · 290–320 nm
UVA · 320–400 nm
Uvinul T 150Ethylhexyl Triazone
314 nm
Not approvedNo pathway
OctisalateEthylhexyl Salicylate
307 nm
ApprovedMonograph
EnsulizolePhenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid
302 nm
ApprovedMonograph
Uvinul A PlusDiethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate
354 nm
Not approvedNo pathway
Mexoryl SXTerephthalylidene Dicamphor Sulfonic Acid
345 nm

Quick translation, for anyone who does not read ingredient lists for fun. UVB burns you. UVA ages you, the slow background damage you do not clock until one day you do. A serious sunscreen covers both. Two of these five filters are cleared for sale in the US. The other three are not, and those three happen to be the ones carrying the UVA load and the featherlight finish. Which is the polite way of saying the rest of the world has been protecting its skin with technology Americans still cannot buy off a shelf.

What other ingredients deserve a shoutout?
Skincare first, always. Fresh focuses on perfecting the complexion while protecting it from sun damage. What makes this formula special is how the filter medley is backed by a handful of potent antioxidants that strengthen the shield against free radicals. INCI highlights include black tea ferment (that is the kombucha part), vitamins C and E, and lingonberry extract.

How the Fresh Kombucha sunscreen wears
On the skin, the Fresh SPF 50 feels like a lightweight lotion. With full-blown heatwave weather in Madrid right now, my first impression is that it works beautifully as a daytime moisturizer. It delivers plenty of hydration alongside the UV protection, and I have been layering it over my water-based serum. It also behaves under my peptide treatment and the beta glucan serum I am currently obsessed with. It absorbs fully, dries down to a soft dewy finish, and never feels greasy. It does not pill either, which is my single worst SPF pet peeve.

Yes, there is a scent
Fresh has always cared about the sensorial side of self-care, the part that goes past texture and finish. If you know the legendary Soy Face Cleanser, this launch shares its scent DNA. A light blend of cucumber and rose. Lovely. Subtle. Very, well, fresh. It never bothered me, so I quite enjoy it. Worth flagging, though, if you are sensitive to added fragrance.

Is it a must-have?
It is a nice-to-have. If you are a hardcore Fresh fan, you may want to round out your routine with the brand’s first facial sunscreen. Because it is, for all intents and purposes, lovely and effective. It is a splurge, but that comes with wanting nice things. And you deserve nice things. I am glad I treated myself to a tube.
I found mine at notino.es and have yet to see it anywhere in Madrid in person. I paid 48 euros for a 50ml tube.
