THE WHAT? Beiersdorf has entered into a long-term, exclusive partnership with the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) to advance research into the role of the skin microbiome in maintaining healthy skin.
THE DETAILS The collaboration will focus on identifying natural compounds produced by skin microorganisms that support skin balance. The work will draw on extensive microbiome datasets from HIPS and Saarland University, including genetic data from more than 500 subjects, covering both healthy individuals and patients with various diseases. Two initial microbiome research projects are planned, with Beiersdorf providing funding, following a cooperation agreement signed in November 2025.
THE WHY? Microbiome-based innovation is becoming an increasingly important area for skincare development as brands seek more science-led approaches to supporting skin health. By combining Beiersdorf’s R&D capabilities with HIPS’ microbial and bioinformatics expertise, the partnership aims to accelerate the discovery of new microbiome-derived ingredients and strengthen long-term product innovation pipelines.
