With winter 2026 in full swing, the results are in: this season’s most popular hair colors leave subtlety behind in favor of rich, velvety shades of brown, black and copper. If you’re thinking those don’t sound too groundbreaking, trust me—you just haven’t seen them yet. 2026’s version of black isn’t just black; it’s a liquid-glass espresso. Brown isn’t just brown; it’s a chic cashmere cocoa. And copper isn’t your typical copper, but a soft, rose-tinted red.

The key takeaway? 2026’s hottest hair colors are less about trends and more about wearability, with an ultra-luxurious upgrade.

Cashmere brunette is all about “touchable richness,” says Richy Kandasamy, vice president of R+COLOR development, explaining that in real life it translates to “warm cocoa, subtle beige reflects and incredible shine without heaviness.”

The cozy shade works especially well on cool skin tones and neutral, olive or tan complexions, says Kandasamy. For warmer complexions, Renée Valerie, director of R+COLOR education, recommends anchoring the look with a slightly neutral root to keep the color balanced, then face-framing so glossy cocoa and espresso tones through the mid-lengths and ends add maximum dimension and movement.

“At the salon, ask your colorist for a brunette with softness and warmth without red tones,” Kandasamy advises. Valerie adds the hue can be perfected with a gloss—like R+COLOR HYPERMATIC 10-Minute Demi-Permanent Liquid Hair Color in shade N4 (SOFT SERVE)—to create a “rich, polished finish with beautiful softness.”

To maintain the color and brightness between salon appointments, Chase Kusero, celebrity colorist and co-founder of IGK Hair Care, recommends IGK’s Expensive Clear Gloss Top Coat ($34).

The soft, silky black of 2026 is mysterious, sexy and luxurious. “Black is coming back but softened with extreme shine,” says Kandasamy. “It’s powerful without feeling severe. It’s perfect for minimalist clients who are looking for a little drama with low and easy maintenance.”

When the color is kept neutral-to-soft—rather than blue or overly inky—the result is a “strong yet elegant” shade that enhances facial features and complements both warm and cooler undertones without overpowering them, says Valerie. Kusero adds that this softer, more dimensional black works especially well on olive and deeper skin tones.

“At the salon, ask your colorist for a soft black with espresso undertones,” advises Kusero, or a “soft black with depth and shine, not jet black, not matte,” says Kandasamy. Valerie adds her preferred approach is using R+COLOR STELLAR Demi-Permanent Liquid Hair Color in shades of 2.0-N (MANHATTAN) and 1.1-A (INK POT),” noting that bringing reference photos helps ensure you and your colorist are on the same page.

For at-home maintenance, Kandasamy recommends using R+Co’s GEMSTONE Color Shampoo and Conditioner ($68 for duo).

“Copper and auburn shades continue to evolve into a softer, glowier red,” says Kusero. Kandasamy elaborates, “For 2026, copper is burnt, rose-tinted and elegant. Less fire, more glow. It feels handcrafted, not trendy.”

Flattering on a wide variety of skin tones, Kuseo explains clementine copper is a soft auburn with copper warmth and depth that’s natural and doesn’t lean costume red. “Ask your colorist for a copper that feels rose-kissed and dimensional not flat, not loud but rich,” says Kandasamy.

Between appointments, Kusero recommends IGK’s Color Depositing Mask ($32) in shade On The Money to give color a boost and added shine.
