How Natural Skincare Supports Skin During Perimenopause
If you’re around the age of 40 and starting to notice changes to your skin’s behaviour, you could be about to board the Perimenopause rollercoaster. The transitional phase leading up to menopause can bring many uncomfortable symptoms as hormone levels begin to shift – from mood swings to hot flashes and even skin sensitivities.
While this is definitely not a fun time and an experience that can often not be avoided, there are natural ways you can soothe and comfort your skin as your body transitions into this next stage of life. Let’s explore how organic skincare can gently relieve common perimenopausal skin symptoms and why taking a natural and gentle approach is so important.
Why Your Skin Changes During Perimenopause
Perimenopause often comes with similar challenges to those we experience throughout our teens. Fluctuating hormones can come with a wide range of symptoms thanks to a decline in estrogen.
Estrogen can have a significant impact on our overall skin health and as levels decline it’s common to notice thinner and dryer skin that is more prone to irritation. Similarly to the “moody teen” stage, those experiencing perimenopause may also find themselves emotional, irritable, gaining unexplained weight and noticing changes in their skin health.
Every woman experiences perimenopause differently and at different ages, but here are the most common symptoms:
Common Symptoms of Perimenopause
Menstrual Changes including irregular and skipped periods
Hot flashes and night sweats
Mood swings, increased anxiety and a lower stress threshold
Difficulty concentrating
Trouble falling and staying asleep
Dry skin, itchy skin and an increase in breakouts
Thinning hair
Sudden weight gain and bloating (particularly around the abdomen)
Natural Ingredients That Calm and Nourish Perimenopausal Skin
While there’s no magic solution to completely avoid perimenopausal symptoms, there are some natural skin allies that can help to alleviate some of the discomfort.

These shadows are pretty easy to work with. They are nicely pigmented so start with a small amount and build and blend.
You can use your finger to apply these, however, I used the new MERIT Brush No. 2. This was enough product to cover both lids:
The new Brush No. 2. uses soft vegan bristles and has one fluffy end and one finer, more tapered end for more precise application along the lash line.
My Review of MERIT Solo Shadows Sheen & Matte
Check out this reel featuring the new Sheen shades with swatches of Iris, Glace, Sartorial and Matchbook, and also application of Matchbook:
MERIT Beauty Solo Shadow in Midcentury
What I love about these shadows is that they give the lids a lovely smooth look and they are easy to apply, blend and build.
They are genuinely long wearing and crease-proof. In fact, when I did the swatches, I had to use an oil cleanser to remove the colours from my arm because they had set down so well.
In spite of the long wear and super smooth finish they offer, they feel very light on the eyelids, and you can apply them and forget about them.
I have fairly oily eyelids, so shadows tend to crease on me even if they are crease resistant, like the new Rare Beauty Eyeshadow Sticks. However, the MERIT Beauty Solo shadows wear so beautifully.
I am really loving the new MERIT Solo Shadow Sheen shades, and the finish is super flattering. I think even if you are slightly scared of shimmers, these will work really well for you.
I do find with the Mattes that the formula does tend to dry out a touch over time, however, I haven’t had the Sheens long enough to be able to comment on how well they last. I do love their performance of ease of application, and I think they will all work beautifully for the festive season.

In August, Sean and I went with a couple of friends to Disneyland! I hadn’t been in a few years, so I obviously had to go all out with the nail art. I picked a few of my favorite characters, and painted them Tsum Tsum style on my nails.
On my left hand, we have Cogsworth, Buzz Lightyear, Donald, Sadness, and Goofy. I chose Pooh, Mike Wazowski, Mickey, Genie, and the White Rabbit for my right hand.
I made sure to put the easier characters on my right hand, since I was going to be doing the nail art with my left! I think my strategy worked out pretty well.
I did this set of nails in gel, which was helpful in that I could adjust things as necessary before curing the nail. Otherwise, my poor left hand would never have stood a chance! It needs all the assistance it can get.
Most of the detailing was done with Akzentz GelPlay gel paints. I truly use them all the time, for everything. If you do any gel art at all, I highly recommend investing in them (or at least a different brand of gel paints!).
Our trip to Disney was amazing. It was really neat to go on Tower of Terror one last time before they change it to the new Guardians of the Galaxy ride! And would you believe that this was the first time I had seen the fireworks show? What an amazing production!
In the skincare world, there are few ingredients as powerful as retinol. With so many products claiming to help improve skin health and reduce the appearance of acne breakouts or fine lines and wrinkles, it’s easy to get caught up in the long ingredient lists. With retinol, you won’t have to look any further to achieve glowing skin.
So what exactly is retinol? If you’ve ever asked yourself, “What does retinol do?”, you are not alone. There are many retinol benefits that are important to be aware of. The professionals atKate Somervillehave put together a foundational guide that delves into what retinol is, the top retinol skin benefits, and additional tips to help improve the appearance of your skin.
What is Retinol?
Retinol is a commonly used ingredient, but many people still do not know exactly what retinol is. At its base level, retinol is a form of Vitamin A. When placed on the skin’s surface, it is converted into retinoic acid. This skincare ingredient is available in a wide variety of over-the-counter products. When looking at various products containing retinol, you may also run across the term retinoids. To understand which form and potency of retinoic acid are in the skincare product you are using, you need to start with Retinol 101 – understanding the difference between retinol and retinoids.
The Difference Between Retinol and Retinoids
One nuance that can be confusing when looking at skincare products is the difference between retinol and retinoids. Are they the same thing? Are they different? In fact, retinol and its brand name productions like Retin-A are part of a family of drugs known as retinoids. This group of compounds consists of human-made derivatives of vitamin A. This has a variety of benefits when used on the skin, which include helping to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of aging.
The primary difference is that over-the-counter products contain a form of retinol in ester forms, which means that they are Vitamin A derivatives. Examples of retinol ester forms include retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, and retinyl linoleate. When these forms of retinol are placed on the surface of the skin, they must be converted into retinoic acid by the skin in order for the skin to be able to utilize it. The strength of the retinol is based on how many conversions the ester form of retinol takes to get to the retinoic acid form. The more conversions the retinol takes to be converted into retinoic acid that the skin can use, the weaker it is.
Prescription-based retinoids, such as RetinA or Tretinoin, have a much higher concentration of retinoic acid than over-the counter retinol products. The primary difference between retinol and prescription-based retinoids is their potency and the amount of retinoic acid they contain. With continued use of either product, many people see an improvement in their skin, though there is an initial adjustment period to increase tolerance. With this understanding in mind, it is now possible to explore five of the key benefits of retinol.
How Does Retinol Work?
Retinol is a key ingredient in many skincare products because of the significant benefits it delivers the skin. Topical retinol products are useful for many individuals to integrate into their regular skincare routine to help improve the appearance of their skin. Below are the top benefits of applying retinol as a part of your skincare routine.
Improves Skin Fullness
As we age, healthy skin loses some of its natural volume which contributes to the development of wrinkles and a face that looks more hollow than it used to. This decline in volume typically begins in your early to mid-30s so the sooner you start to use retinol products, the more effective they will be. Fortunately, when you apply retinol topically, like with aretinol vitamin C moisturizer, it helps to combat the appearance of wrinkles and hollowness by increasing the skin’s ability to retain moisture. As aging skin becomes more hydrated, your face will appear fuller and the skin smoother.
Exfoliates the Skin
Retinol can also help to exfoliate healthy skin, unclogging pores and sloughing away dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Having clear pores allows other products to penetrate deeper into the skin, making them more effective. The benefits of exfoliation can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by buffing away the surface layers of skin, leaving fresher younger-looking skin exposed. Revealing these new layers of skin also aids in evening your complexion and minimizing the visibility of acne scarring.
Helps Soften Age Spots & Evens Skin Tone
Not only can retinol help to reduce the appearance of acne scars, but it can also aid in visibly softening age spots while addressing uneven skin tone and improving your complexion. You can even use our Retinol Eye Cream to help with the tightening of aging skin. Our Kate Somerville Skin Health Experts report that clinic clients with mild discoloration have seen a noticeable improvement after three to six months of regular use while more severe cases may require up to twelve months of use before you see significant results.
Tips for Using Retinol Products
As shown through the benefits above, retinol is one of the best anti-aging ingredients you can integrate into your skin routine. However, before doing so, it is important to be aware of some key tips for how to apply retinol anti-aging products to ensure that they are as effective as possible and your skin experiences minimal irritation. Below are a few tips to keep in mind when using pure retinol products.
Only use retinol products at night – Because retinol products trigger the skin to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and replace them with newly regenerated skin cells, the skin can be more sensitive to sunlight. To prevent photosensitivity side effects, only use retinol products at night. If you must use retinol in the morning, make sure to apply sunscreen over the top of the product to avoid sun damage, although doing so should already be part of your daily routine skincare steps!
Follow the usage rule of thumb – You may wonder how frequently you should be using retinol products for them to be effective.Regardless of your age, retinol can be an extremely beneficial addition to your skincare routine. Consider starting with products like Retinol Vitamin C Serum or the KateCeuticals Resurfacing Overnight Peel.
Allow your skin type to adjust. Some skin is more sensitive to retinol than others, causing redness and other visible signs of irritation. Make sure you slowly ramp up your usage of retinol products so your skin can become accustomed to their presence. If your goal is to eventually use a retinol product 3 or 4 times per week, start with once or twice weekly before building up your frequency. This will minimize any irritation side effects
Upgrade Your Skincare Routine
At Kate Somerville, we recommend the new Mega-A Skin Transforming Serum to reach your skincare goals. This premium formula features Retinal, an advanced retinoid 11 times more effective than traditional Retinol, proven to smooth, firm, and renew your skin. Impressively, 100% of clinical testers reported feeling more hydrated skin after just four weeks. By integrating this powerful retinal serum into your routine, tailored to your unique skin needs and lifestyle, you’re setting the stage for a transformative journey toward renewed, radiant skin.

Ever stood in front of your bathroom mirror clutching a bunch of skincare bottles and tubes thinking, “But what the heck goes first?” Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
Skincare layering can feel like a secret society only beauty editors and TikTok influencers have the password to. But today, we’re handing you the cheat sheet and the secret handshake.
Consider this your crash course in layering skincare the right way so you’ll never have to “um”, “ah”, or accidentally put your oil on before your serum again.
The Golden Rule of Skincare Layering
Go from thinnest to thickest: Watery → creamy → oily → balmy.
Think of it like breakfast: juice first, then the hearty stuff, then the toppings. (Pancakes optional, but highly encouraged).
This way, the lightweight formulas can sink in first and do their thing, while the heavier ones lock everything down.

I’m rounding up my staples and favorites by category. I tried to narrow each category down to my Top 3, but there are a few sections I have more than 3 favorites.
Best Primers
These are my favorite primers. I try to find ones that multi-task (ie has SPF, adds hydration or glow.
Best Foundation Formulas
I’ve split the foundation and skin tint bases into a few different categories based on formula.
Best Skin Tints/Sheer
Best Medium Coverage
Best Stick Foundations
Best Concealers
Best Setting Powders
I’ve split my favorites into pressed and loose versions. To this day I still prefer a pressed format for convenience, but I find that loose powder applied with a puff last longer.
Loose Powder Favorites
Laura Mercier Ultra-Blur Talc Free Translucent Loose Setting Powder – This is the setting powder formula that gets me the most compliments. Anytime I use Translucent or Rose people always say that my skin looks flawless. It’s really not these days but this powder really does work to blur the skin beautifully. I use the Makeup by Mario Powder Puff with this one.
YSL All Hours Hyper Blur Loose Setting Powder – I bought 02 Fair Medium back in April and really like it. It blurs, sets and doesn’t darken. I might try the Translucent formula since my skin tone is a bit lighter right now.
Pressed Setting Powders
Setting Spray Loves
I don’t find myself using a setting spray very often these days, but the ones I have tried and like are from Charlotte Tilbury, Makeup by Mario and NARS. All of these are lightweight with an ultra fine mist.
Best Bronzers
My bronzer favorites are still the same as they’ve been for years. I keep hoping for another new formulation to fall in love with, but I keep sticking with these for the tones and formula.
Contour
I tend to use bronzer as a contour instead of a traditional contour, but three I really like because of the tones
Best Blushes
Also split my recommendations between powder and cream/liquid. I usually prefer a powder format for lasting power.
Favorite Powder Formulas
Favorite Cream or Liquid Formats
Armani Luminous Silk Cheek Tint – This is still the best formula for a liquid blush. It’s flawless and long lasting. The shine shades are nice too, but the matte formula is better for lasting power. Review + swatches here.
Hourglass Unreal Liquid Blush wins for the best tones and formula. These are on the dewy side but this year my skin has been exceptionally dry so I’ve been loving them. Review + swatches here.
Rhode Pocket Blush – I still really love these. Freckle is the best everyday neutral. Swatches + review here.
Highlighter Loves
Eyeshadow Palettes
Best Cream Eyeshadow
Go-To Brow Products
My top four brow products are the:
I recently bought the ABH MicroStroke Detailing Brow Pen and love it. I’m still trying to master the application but after trying several pens and hating them all (some of the colors looked straight up green on me) a friend recommended the ABH one and she was 100% right about the tones and formula.
Mascara Favorites
I feel like I need to expand my mascara rotation this year. I’ve been sticking to three tried and true formulas which I still really love, but I think I need to change things up a bit.
Favorite Lipsticks
I have so many lipstick loves. It’s hard to narrow down my favorites, but if I had to pick my top 5:
Best Liquid Lipstick
I’m still not really into liquid lipsticks since most are matte and I prefer some kind of shine or gloss, but I do think Dior makes beautiful ones!
Favorite Tinted Lip Balms/Oils
This is another favorite category of mine. I’ll link the swatches I’ve posted of each formula.
Lip Liner
Best Lip Gloss Formulas
The best gloss formulas ranked by how often I wear them:
Favorite Makeup Tools
Quick mention on some tools that I really love that are available at Sephora.
Hourglass Travel Brush Set – I bought this several years ago during the Sephora Sale and it was 100% worth the splurge. This set includes the full-size options.
Ilia Brushes – These are SO under-rated, I really hope they make a full line of brushes. I think every one I’ve tried is 10/10 incredible.
Glossier Lip Pencil Sharpener – Not the most exciting tool, but this is the best sharpener I’ve found. The way they designed the container makes it perfect to carry in your makeup bag or for travel.
Makeup By Mario Powder Puff – Not all puffs are the same. Many of my favorites seem to have changed texture but the Makeup By Mario one is ultra soft and I love the size and shape.
Sephora Collection Brush Cleaner – This is the best cleaner to clean creams from your brushes (foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, blush etc.). Since it is spendy I recommend using the Dawn Powerwash Dish Spray first with a brush pad. For those stubborn creams I will then use the Sephora Brush Cleaner and it works wonders to remove cream products.
Sephora Collection Cotton – Another staple I swear by. I do love the plush cotton from other brands, but this one is my most-repurchased one.
That wraps up my extensive makeup favorites roundup! Stay tuned for the roundup for other categories very soon! Use code EVERYTHING to save when shopping online, these are the details per tier:

What Actually Happens When You Grow Out Bleached Hair?
When you bleach your hair, the pigment inside each strand is stripped out, leaving it lighter… but also much weaker. That bleached hair doesn’t “unbleach” itself over time. It sticks around until it’s either trimmed off or grown out.
As your natural roots grow in, you’ll notice a clear divide between your soft, shiny, healthy new growth and the older, drier bleached sections. This line of demarcation can look harsh, especially if you went much lighter (like platinum or icy blonde).
Not only that, but the texture may feel totally different, and your styling habits will likely need to change. Bleached ends usually require more moisture, while your roots might get oily faster.
It’s a balancing act—but one that’s totally manageable with the right tools and tips.
10 Real Tips to Grow Out Bleached Hair Without Hating It
These practical, tested tips will help you look and feel better throughout the grow-out process.
No dramatic chops required.
#1. Get Regular Trims (Yes, Even While Growing It Out)
It may feel counterproductive to cut your hair when your goal is to grow it… but regular trims are key to maintaining healthy-looking hair and preventing split ends.
Split ends don’t just hang out at the tips—they can travel upward, breaking your hair and making it look thinner and more damaged.
👉 Aim for a light dusting every 8–12 weeks. This keeps your ends fresh, your style polished, and your hair less prone to breakage.
If you’re worried about losing too much length, tell your stylist you only want a micro-trim to maintain shape while keeping as much length as possible.
#2. Tone or Gloss to Blend the Color
One of the hardest parts of growing out bleached hair is that super-obvious root line. Luckily, there are ways to soften the contrast between your natural hair and your light ends without doing another full bleach job.
💡 Try a toning gloss, root smudgeor color-depositing conditioner to create a more blended, lived-in look.
Recommended products:
These options help bridge the color gap as your hair grows, making the grow-out line look intentional rather than “oops.”
#3. Deep Condition Religiously
Bleached hair tends to be thirsty… dry, porous, and in need of serious nourishment.
Deep conditioning treatments are your best friend right now. Use them at least once a week (or more if needed), alternating between protein-based masks (for strength) and moisture masks (for softness and shine).
Favorite masks:
For a tip: wrap your hair in a warm towel or shower cap while the mask processes to boost absorption.
#4. Minimize Heat and Always Use Protection
Heat styling may help your hair look better short term, but it’s often what holds back long-term progress.
Try air-drying when possible, and if you do use heat tools, never skip heat protection. Even bleached hair that looks fine can have hidden damage that worsens over time.
Best heat protectants:
You don’t have to ditch heat completely—just use it mindfully and sparingly while your hair heals.
#5. Embrace Creative Styles That Camouflage the Grow-Out
Instead of fighting the contrast, find ways to style around it.
Braids
Half-up buns
Messy claw clips
Loose curls or beach waves
These all help blend the root area into the lighter ends, creating a dimensional, textured look that makes grow-out less obvious.
🌟Bonus: these styles also reduce the need for hot tools and are super on-trend.
#6. Switch Your Part or Add Bangs
This simple trick can make a huge difference in how your grow-out looks.
If you’ve been rocking a middle part with harsh roots peeking through, try flipping it to the side or doing a soft zig-zag. It breaks up the root line and instantly gives the illusion of a softer blend.
Want a bolder change? Add curtain bangs or a long fringe to distract from the contrast.
Just make sure your stylist knows you’re growing out bleached hair so they can cut strategically.
#7. Support Hair Growth From the Inside
Let’s be real: you can’t make your hair grow fasterbut you can absolutely make sure it’s growing at its best.
That means nourishing your body with hair-supporting nutrients like:
Biotin
Collagen
Omega-3s
Iron & Vitamin D
Supplements to consider:
Also, drink your water. Hydration plays a bigger role than people realize.
#8. Don’t Overwash and Skip Sulfates
Overwashing your hair can strip away the natural oils that keep your new growth strong and your ends protected.
Aim to wash 2–3 times per week max, and always use sulfate-free products to preserve moisture and color.
Great sulfate-free options:
Use dry shampoo on off days, and focus conditioner only on the ends to avoid greasy roots.
#9. Ditch the Comparison Game
You’re going to see influencers with perfect hairlines and salon-fresh blonde highlights… but chances are, they’re using extensions, filters, or getting professional touch-ups.
Growing out bleached hair takes time and patience, and it often looks messier in real life than it does on social media.
Give yourself grace, and remember: your hair is allowed to look “in progress.”
#10. Have a Long-Term Game Plan
Before you get fed up and impulsively re-bleach or dye it dark, ask yourself: what’s my actual goal?
Do you want your natural hair color back?
Are you aiming for healthier hair overall?
Planning to eventually get balayage or highlights again?
Knowing your destination helps you stay focused through the awkward middle stages. Work with your stylist to map out the steps so you can get there without regret.
Bonus: Should You Dye It Dark or Chop It Off?
Both are totally valid options—but they come with pros and cons.
Dyeing it darker can create a more blended look short-term, but it doesn’t necessarily restore health to your hair. Also, color over bleach can fade fast or look muddy.
Chopping it off gives you a fresh start, but only do it if you’re emotionally ready for shorter hair.
If you’re unsure, wait 48 hours before making any big decisions. Sometimes a good hairstyle and a deep treatment are all you need to feel better.
