FLAVOUR BOMB PASTA

The first of 4 exclusive recipes (that will be dropping weekly!), chef and food writer Nina Parker brings us an easy taste sensation

Images: Nina Parker

I find that anything with baked feta is a bit of a cheat because it creates intense flavour with minimal effort. The classic combination of mixing chilli, feta and lemon together is always a winner. This is proper comfort food!

Serves 4. Vegetarian

Ingredients:

10 tbsp olive oil

2 blocks of Greek feta cheese (400g)

1 red/white onion, sliced

6 garlic cloves, skins left on

1 level tsp dried chilli flakes

Zest of 1 lemon and the juice of 1/2

1 whole broccoli head,(260g) divided into equal bite-sized pieces

4 handfuls of baby spinach, quickly wilted down in a frying pan

320g pasta of your choice, I love rigatoni for this

Salt and pepper

Method:

Preheat the oven to 190C and grab a large baking dish.

Add 8 tablespoons of olive oil, feta, onion, garlic cloves and chilli flakes. Make sure everything is coated without breaking the feta.

Place into the oven for 20 mins.

Throw the broccoli into a bowl and add the last two spoons of olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

Remove the tray and scatter the broccoli around.  Place back into the oven for another 20-25 minutes or until everything is cooked.

Squeeze the garlic out of their skins and put the cloves into a small bowl.

In the last 10 mins of cooking, start on the pasta. Set a large pan of water to boil and when bubbling, salt water generously!  Then add the pasta and cook to the packet instructions.

Just before the pasta is ready, scoop out about 150ml of the cooking water and add this to the garlic cloves.  Use a spoon to mash it all together.  Pour this over the baking dish along with the drained pasta, wilted spinach, lemon zest and juice.

Toss everything together, breaking up the feta and season with more pepper.  Taste to check the seasoning adding more chilli flakes if needed.

Serve straight away!

Is it time to break up with natural beauty?

0

The beauty industry has long sold us the dream that natural equals good – good for us, good for the planet, good for everyone. But what if that connection is more myth than reality?

In this thought-provoking episode of Green Beauty Conversations, Lorraine Dallmeier, Chartered Environmentalist, Biologist, and CEO of Formula Botanica, explores whether it’s time to question our blind faith in natural beauty.

Surveys show that most consumers assume ‘natural ‘ means sustainable, ethical, and eco-friendly. Yet, the truth is that the word ‘natural’ is completely unregulated.

A brand can bulldoze forests, harvest threatened plants, or exploit communities and still call their product natural. So, does the label actually tell us anything about the environmental or social impact of our beauty choices?

Following on from last week’s inspiring interview with Asa Suguitan of Hawaii Sandalwood, who shared his family’s journey in restoring one of the rarest ecosystems in the world, this week’s episode asks a tough question: is it time to break up with natural beauty once and for all?

Listen here

“The word natural is a feel-good label that can hide a thousand sins.” — Lorraine Dallmeier

Key takeaways:

  • Natural and sustainable are not the same: We often conflate natural beauty with sustainability, but the two concepts are very different. An ingredient can be labelled as natural and still cause environmental harm. For instance, cutting down a 200-year-old tree in a fragile ecosystem, refining it into oil, and selling it as natural is completely legal – yet far from sustainable.
  • Ecosystem health matters more than labels: The best cosmetic ingredients come from thriving ecosystems – forests with rich soils, balanced water cycles, and diverse species. Sustainability requires us to think beyond extraction and focus on regeneration. Brands and suppliers need to ensure that the ecosystems they draw from are being left healthier, not depleted.
  • Natural beauty can hide exploitation: Because natural is unregulated, the label can conceal damaging practices: monoculture farming, deforestation, exploitation of labour, and biodiversity loss. Consumers are lulled into believing they are making ethical choices when, in reality, they may be contributing to environmental and social harm.
  • Rethinking what beauty really means: It’s time for the beauty industry to ask harder questions: is this ingredient traceable? Regenerative? Does it benefit local communities? The natural label doesn’t answer these questions. Instead of clinging to ‘natural’, we should prioritise integrity, transparency, and regenerative practices that truly honour the land.
  • Learning from restoration projects: Last week’s conversation with Hawaii Sandalwood showed that another way is possible. By restoring degraded land and replanting diverse native species, they demonstrated how businesses can thrive while protecting ecosystems. This model gives hope for a future where beauty aligns with ecological care – and challenges us to demand more from the industry.

Amanda Batula Is Owning Her Sparkle

The One Thing

Our series The One Thing is a Sparknotes version of the products, rituals, and moments your favorite celebrities and influencers swear by—their go-tos, must-haves, and can’t-live-withouts. So go ahead—take a brief, intimate peek into the lives of your favorites through the things (and people, and moments) they hold dear.

When we first met Summer House’s Amanda Batula, she was the new girlfriend of cast member Kyle Cook—her now husband—sneaking into the Hampton’s house for late-night sleepovers. But over her seven seasons as a main cast member, she’s become a star in her own right, earning fan-fave status for her cool-girl style, chill energy (a much needed balance to the house’s chaos) and openness around her depression and anxiety.

But on November 6, she’s really embracing her main character energy with ShimmerGirl, a collab between her and Cook’s hard tea brand Lover Boy, and Vaseline. The collab includes three-pack of the Loverboy White Tea Peach Zero-Proof Iced Tea, as well as Vaseline’s beloved Glazed & Glisten Gel Oils, for a glow inside and out. “I loved the idea of doing something about me, and bringing Vaseline and Lover Boy together and really letting me shine through that and creating Shimmer Girl,” Batula tells Byrdie. “It’s all about being glowy and confident.”

In honor of the collab, Batula fills us in on her tricks to beating the winter uglies, her beauty favorites, and a surprising self-tan tip she swears by.

Vaseline

How She Beats the “Winter Uglies”

“The biggest tip [is to use] Vaseline Gel Oil, that’s an easy fix to put on your body, add a little extra sparkle and glow to your day, even if you’re not going anywhere. It’s very hydrating too, so it’s not just a surface-level, cosmetic item. It actually does good for you and hydrates your skin, so even [if I’m just] at home, putting that on my body really helps beat those uglies.

“But, nothing beats a good spray tan either! I love a spray tan, I love an at-home self-tanner, I love bronzing drops, I love a buildable moisturizer, anything. It’s life-changing. Just don’t pee in the shower after because it can ruin your spray tan, I’ve learned the har way!”

The One Product Always In Her Bag

“It’s in my bag right now, the Lawless Forget the Filler Lip Gloss. This one is empty! I go through these… this is my third one, I think it’s one of the best lip glosses on the market. The one I have right now is the Juicy Watermelon one, I like this one for the summer, but they have a Cherry Vanilla that has a little bit more of a red tint, and I love that one for the fall and winter. And they taste delicious too.”

@amandabatula/Instagram

The One Song on Her Getting Ready Playlist

“I have a song fixation, so I will play a song until I can never listen to it again. Right now on repeat is Olivia Dean “Man I Need.” Can’t stop singing it, can’t stop listening to it, can’t stop playing it. I think Kyle might walk out on me if I belted out one more time. He’s like, ‘Can you pick a new song?’ I’m like, ‘No.'”

How Her Routine Changes When She’s Not Filming

“My skincare routine doesn’t change. I’ve struggled a lot with my skin and acne, especially over the past few years, so the key to success with that is consistency. My skincare routine does not change, if anything, it’s a thicker moisturizer.

“I’m super consistent in terms of makeup and stuff—If there’s not a camera on me, I’m not wearing makeup! That’s how it changes, I’m mostly makeup free.”

The One Thing She Tells Herself When She’s Having a Bad Mental Health Day

“Tomorrow is a new day. For me, what’s been the most helpful is to embrace the bad day, and to give myself the opportunity to not do anything, or binge watch a show, or order unnecessary amounts of takeout, whatever it is. Instead of feeling guilty that I’m not being as productive, I’ll turn it around and make it a positive and, like, okay, I’m having a bad day, I’m having a lazy day, let’s just embrace it, enjoy it, and then start fresh tomorrow. And if tomorrow doesn’t work, then the day after that.”

@amandabatula/Instagram

The TV Shows She’s Binging

“I like The Girlfriend, The Woman in Cabin 10any psychological thriller. You need to come over and look at my ‘recently watched,’ because I hit all the big shows. I’m on a big doctor show kick right now, so I’ve been rewatching Grey’s Anatomy. I watched The Pitt, I love The Pitt, I’m on season two of Doc, so good.”

The Treatments She’s Been Wanting to Try

“[I’m interested in] any sort of lasers and peel treatments in general, now that I’ve gotten my acne under control, because that was my main focus. I want to do other things to clear my skin, and the dark spots or any scarring, get rid of fine lines, so that’s going to be my next big focus. But in terms of facials, I love Face Gym. I feel like that’s really great in the winter when you’re feeling kind of ugly and puffy. I love popping in there, and having them put their hands in my mouth and like all the things.”

The Cast She’s Most Excited to See at Bravocon

“I love the women of Salt Lake City. I just think they’re so iconic. I’m fortunate enough to have met a lot of them and become friends with them, so I’m actually really excited to reconnect, and be in the presence of all these iconic women. I know people have their favorites, I grew up on Bravo, and I don’t think I can choose favorites. I’m just really excited to be in a room full of such strong, powerful, somewhat nutty women.

“I’ve been able to work with Lisa [Barlow] before, and Heather [Gay]and develop relationships with them. Meredith [Marks] is wonderful, they are a very very good time. I’m not on their bad side, anything that they ever tell me I’m taking to my grave. I’m not getting accused of leaking any information or going to the press!”

@amandabatula/Instagram

On Her New Bangs

“I’ve been wanting to change my hair up for a while now, and I’ve been wanting to do this sort of very minimal, fringy bang look. Every time I went to my hairdresser before we would start filming Summer Housethey were like, ‘You don’t want to get bangs for the first time in the summer, you’re sweaty, it will stick to your forehead,’ yada yada yada. finally I was like, screw it, I’m gonna do it.

“So this was three years in the making, and I don’t have much to show for it! I’m still figuring out how to style it, and next time I go in for a cut, we’ll probably tweak it a bit, but I really wanted to do something different and I did not want to chop my hair off. That was a trend I was not willing to get behind. Long hair girl forever. I have extensions in too, mostly for thickness, but for a little bit of length. That’s how much I do not want to chop my hair off!”

@amandabatula/Instagram

Her Go-To Fall Outfit Formula

“Jeans, 100%. I’m overflowing with denim. I’ve been wanting to love a loafer. I can’t love it for myself, but I love it for everyone else. So I’m gonna say a loafer, or a cute boot, T-shirt, sweater, and a good suede bomber jacket over. I have different colors and all of those things, and that’s my formula.

The One Thing That Instantly Makes Her Feel More Confident

“Aside from the Vaseline Shimmer Gel Oils, which is the quickest confidence boost ever, I would say the people around me. I have friends that, if I need a confidence boost, I can call, and I think that’s really important. Even if they’re lying to my face and telling me I’m the most incredible, beautiful, stunning person ever, those are the people that you want in your circle, and that’s what I have. So the Gel Oil and good friends.”

The One Way She Relates to Her Zodiac Sign

“I think I’m the least Leo Leo. You have Kyle who’s a Leo, you have Lindsay [Hubbard] who’s a Leo, and I’m a Leo and I look at them and I’m like, we could not be more different. I don’t like being the center of attention, but I do like attention. I don’t want to be up on stage, I don’t want to be giving a speech to a room full of people, I don’t like that kind of attention, but give me compliments. That’s the attention that I want, and that’s probably the most Leo thing about me. Hype me up!”

Watercolor Wash with Splattered Accents | Chalkboard Nails

0

Recently, I had the very exciting opportunity to do an interview with our local CW station here in Phoenix, CW6! I knew they would be filming an up-close view of me doing some nail art, so I knew I had to do something jazzy on my own nails, too. I adapted this look from a Neiru lesson called “Fuchsia Swirl” by Mariko Shida.

Watercolor marbled nails by @chalkboardnails

It’s super easy to get this look, especially if you’re working with gel. I’m sure many of you guys have seen the drag marble looks with nail polish, right? Well this is the same, but in gel, you aren’t working against the evaporating solvents and drying nail polish!

After prepping and applying your base coat, start with one coat of your main base color and cure. I’m using Presto Sordino.

Apply a second coat of your base color, but don’t cure just yet! Add some swipes of your additional colors, as well as some thin lines of black gel. Clean off a striper brush, and use it to drag through the wet gel. This look is more of a “long, swoopy lines” type of marble, but you can draw whatever pattern you want. Cure your marbling.

Finally, add some splattered details. I actually used Gelish Pinch of Pepper for this particular manicure, but you could hand paint on some black and white as well.

Full product list:

Presto Bis (mustard)
Presto Garante (blue)
Presto Con Amore (neon yellow)
Gelish Carnaval Hangover (purple)
Gelish Pinch of Pepper (black and white glitter)
Gelish Matte Top It Off

Calming vs Hydrating Toner – Key Differences & Benefits – Merindah Botanicals

0

Standing at the bathroom mirror wondering which toner you actually need?

Here’s a simple breakdown of calming vs hydrating toner so you can choose the right one for your skin today.

What Is a Calming Toner?

A calming facial toner is formulated to help soothe irritation, reduce the look of redness, and support skin comfort after cleansing. A soothing toner for sensitive skin is typically alcohol-free and enriched with gentle, plant-based extracts that respect the skin’s natural barrier.

What Is a Hydrating Toner?

A hydrating face toner focuses on delivering light, refreshing moisture and helping your skin feel soft and bouncy. These formulas are ideal when skin feels tight, dry, or dehydrated and you want a weightless, quick-absorbing layer of hydration.

Calming vs Hydrating Toner: Key Differences

Purpose & Benefits

Calming toner: Comforts reactive skin, visibly softens redness, and helps restore post-cleanse balance.
Hydrating toner: Boosts surface hydration, helps skin feel smooth and supple, and preps for moisturiser.

Skin Sensations & Finish

Calming toner: Feels soothing and comforting with a non-sting, non-stripping finish.
Hydrating toner: Feels dewy and refreshing with a light, quenched finish.

Typical Users

Calming toner: Best for sensitive, redness-prone, or easily irritated skin—especially after cleansing or exfoliation.
Hydrating toner: Great for dry, dehydrated, or seasonally tight skin that needs an extra moisture step.

When It’s Most Helpful

Calming toner: After cleansing, post-workout, or whenever skin feels warm or reactive.
Hydrating toner: Morning under makeup, during winter or travel, or anytime your skin needs a quick moisture top-up.

When to Choose Calming vs Hydrating

Choose a Calming Toner If…

  • Your skin often flushes, stings, or feels irritated after cleansing.
  • You want a soothing toner for sensitive skin that supports a comfortable, balanced feel.
  • You prefer gentle, alcohol-free formulas with calming botanicals.

Choose a Hydrating Toner If…

  • Your skin looks dull, feels tight, or shows fine dehydration lines.
  • You want a feather-light moisture layer that absorbs quickly.
  • You’re layering under serums and moisturiser for extra plumpness.

Is There a Toner That Is Both Calming and Hydrating?

Instead of layering two separate products, you may be wondering if there’s a single toner that can do both. The answer is yes — our Calming Toner is designed to soothe sensitive, reactive skin while also delivering lightweight hydration. With its natural plant-based ingredients, it restores balance, reduces redness, and refreshes your skin in one simple step. Perfect for busy women who want effective results without complicating their routine.

FAQs

Is toner necessary?

While not strictly essential, the right toner can noticeably improve comfort, balance, and how well your next products absorb.

Morning or evening?

Both. Use after cleansing and before serums or moisturiser.

Can oily or combination skin use toner?

Absolutely. Calming toners help reduce the feel of irritation, while hydrating toners deliver light, non-greasy moisture where you need it.

Journal Writing

If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.

—Gospel of St. Thomas

Self-discovery

I have been keeping a journal consistently for the last five or more years, for many different reasons. One is to document events, people, and places I don’t want to forget. Another is I like to keep a journal to help figure out my moods as they relate to my behavior and to help sort out my anxieties, joys, and so on. Essentially, I journal to get to know myself better. For example, why did I get so upset about that event, discussion, or comment? I want to uncover the conflicts that may really be going on.

Journal writing is a great way to self-discovery. Your feelings and insights are documented for future use. It’s a learning tool. You can see how you felt a year ago about a relationship. Was it better back then, or were you suffering from the same dilemmas?

The Artist’s Way

There is an outstanding book called The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, published by G. Putnam’s Sons. If you need help sorting out what is really going on in your mind and need a nudge or guidance, I highly recommend this book. You don’t have to be an artist to benefit greatly from this book.

Get started

If you don’t know how to get started, it’s easier than you might think. I first got started in college. As I mention elsewhere in this book, I fully realize I am not a gifted writer. After flunking English a couple of times at Metropolitan State College in Denver, I was advised to attend tutoring sessions at the writing center at the school. I had a great tutor who simply sat me down with a notebook and pen and said, “Okay, write.”

I asked, “Write about what?”

She said to write about whatever I wanted.

“Like what?”

“Just write about whatever you want to write about.”

I said, “I don’t want to write about anything.”

She said, “Write that.”

“What?”

“Just write. It doesn’t matter what you write about.”

“I don’t want to do this,” I said. “I am really busy and have a lot to do.”

“Write that,” she said. “Just shut up and start writing!”

I was thinking, “That is kind of rude,” and she said, “Write how you feel about that. Write about all the things you think you need to do. Write about how I am getting on your nerves. Just keep writing.”

Give up your resistance

Finally, I gave up my natural resistance and just started writing how I thought I was way too busy for this writing class and how I shouldn’t have to go there twice a week and how this was really a stupid exercise and how sure I was that I wasn’t going to benefit from it. When I gave up my resistance, I couldn’t believe how much I had to say. She could barely get me out of there when my hour was up. So if you have a problem getting started, I suggest the same thing to you—just write. You will benefit more than you could ever anticipate.

Find the best time of day for yourself to write. I find first thing in the morning very beneficial. I find that my dreams can really affect my mood when I wake up. Thus, I think it is important to do it close to waking up. Journal writing is about discovering yourself. It’s about having a better understanding about yourself. Consider it an adventure. Just start writing!

Refy Lip Stick – The Beauty Look Book

0

Refy Beauty launched a new lip product called the Lip Stick ($28 each, available at Refy Beauty and Sephora). This is an innovative liquid lipstick in a unique twist up pen + roller ball type applicator. I was thrilled to partner with them to share a try-on of all shades on Instagram here but also wanted to share a blog post with more thoughts + swatches here.

These are a satin finish liquid lipstick with a sponge tip applicator. These are hydrating and creamy with a soft texture. The pigment is unique in the sense that you can achieve an almost entirely different color with 1-2 clicks of the pen vs 3-4 clicks. More clicks result in a deeper more opaque color.

The applicator tip has a pointed end so you can apply with precision around the edge of your lips. Formula is truly incredible. They’re smooth and apply easily just like you’d expect from a liquid lipstick but they don’t look dry. Lasting power is very good – they will stay put without migrating for hours, however they aren’t budge-proof or transfer proof.

Refy Lip Stick

Shades in this launch are bold and pull very dark. The colors are darker than shades I usually wear but I think there are some beautiful shades like Ruby or Maple I can wear for a more glam look. I hope they consider expanding the shade range because the formula is SO good – I am a huge fan of the tones in their Lip Sculpt and Lip Gloss line (review here) and I think shades like Oat, Blush, Taupe, Rosewood would incredible in this particular Lip Stick formula.

Space NK Fragrance Advent Calendar 2025 Unboxing Video

My Review of the Space NK Fragrance Advent Calendar 2025

I’m really pleased that Space NK are doing another Space NK advent calendar this year.

Fragrance Advent Calendars are extremely hot property these days and tend to sell out even faster than regular beauty advent calendars. The Harrods one sold out on pre-order this year and the LOOKFANTASTIC one vanished in days!

I think this Space NK one is a really brilliant edit. Space NK stock the most amazing range of luxury fragrances and this selection represents that beautifully.

The Space NK Fragrance Advent Calendar 2025 is a truly luxurious edit for fragrance lovers. It cleverly mixes cult classics with unexpected niche discoveries, from full-size bottles like Malin + Goetz Strawberry and DedCool 01 Taunt, to chic miniatures such as Byredo Blanche and Kilian Angel’s Share.

The inclusion of Frederic Malle x Acne Studios, DS & Durga Pistachioand Vyrao Ludeaux really elevates the curation, bringing in that off-beat, cool-girl edge Space NK does so well. It’s not just perfume either. There’s a Diptyque Mimosa candle that makes for a gorgeous finishing touch and adds an atmospheric layer to the collection.

What I love most is the balance: wearable everyday staples like Acqua di Parma Fico di Amalfi and Maison Margiela Lazy Sunday Morning sit alongside more daring, conversation-starting scents, meaning each door feels like a new mood to try on. It’s a sophisticated, grown-up advent that feels indulgent but still very useable day-to-day.
