Your Sunscreen Might Be Failing You—Here’s What Dermatologists Wish You Knew

0

You wouldn’t skip your morning coffee—so why skip sunscreen? Wearing it daily can help protect your skin from skin cancer-causing UV rays from the sun, which we are exposed to practically every day. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer—in fact, it kills two people an hour in America. Therefore, making sunscreen and other sun-protection measures essential for skin cancer prevention and overall health. Beyond cancer risk, sun exposure can lead to painful burns, trigger flare-ups of certain skin conditions, and speed up visible signs of aging. But with so many sunscreens on the market… how do you choose the best one for your skin?

“Even on cloudy days or when running errands, an individual is exposed to more of the sun’s harmful UV rays than they might think,” says Redd. “UV damage can accumulate over time and put an individual at risk for premature aging of the skin and developing skin cancer as well.” That’s why knowing how to choose the best sunscreen for skin cancer prevention and overall skin health is so critical.

The fact that 1 in 5 Americans develop skin cancer in their lifetimes is sobering evidence that we don’t realize just how much we are exposed to UV rays throughout the day—even when we’re not out in the sun. Quick errands, a sunny car ride, sitting near a window, even prolonged screen time—all of it contributes to cumulative skin damage.

In addition to watching your skin for signs of trouble, wearing sunscreen and taking sun damage prevention measures can protect your skin and keep it looking younger and feeling healthier for years.

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering how to choose a sunscreen that will work the best for you, you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions our dermatologists get all the time! Lauren Redd breaks down the things you want to look for on the label:

“One of the most common mistakes is that people do not pick an SPF that is effective enough,” says Redd. “SPF tells you how long it would take the sun’s rays to cause a sunburn when using as directed versus without any protection. An SPF of 15 or less is usually not protective enough, especially when you’re out in the sun for prolonged periods.”

The higher the SPF rating, the fewer UV rays reach your skin. However, while the best sunscreen will have a higher SPF, keep in mind that the SPF level does not indicate how long you can play in the sun before developing a sunburn. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends wearing sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 every day on all exposed skin. Remember, however, that each individual may have a different UV exposure threshold based on skin type. For example, people with pale skin burn more easily than people with darker skin tones who have more melanin. Sunscreen also wears off after a while, so:

The best sunscreen choices will say “broad spectrum” on the label. “A broad-spectrum sunscreen offers the best protection against both UVA and UVB light, which are both forms of light produced by the sun but at different wavelengths,” says Redd

UVB rays are primarily responsible for the painful sunburns. UVA, however, is the most common form of solar radiation we get on Earth, and it penetrates even more deeply, causing DNA damage and premature aging. Both of these can penetrate glass, fog, and clouds to reach your skin. This is why you need sunscreen that blocks them both.

“Spoiler alert—no sunscreen is truly waterproof,” says Redd. Sunscreen is a filter, not a shield. You sweat underneath it, and water washes over it—so it gradually breaks down.

That’s why the FDA only allows sunscreen to be labeled as water-resistant for either 40 or 80. You’ll find that information right on every bottle.

So, how often should you reapply sunscreen? It’s very clear:

Even if you’re dry, it’s smart to reapply every two hours—especially if you’re sweating or spending time outdoors.

Reading the ingredient list can feel overwhelming when you’re trying to choose the right sunscreen. Most formulas fall into two categories based on their active ingredients: mineral or chemical.

Although Redd often recommends mineral sunscreens as the best sunscreen options for people with sensitive skin, there is a place for a well-formulated chemical sunscreen, explains Redd:

“Chemical sunscreens work by converting harmful UV rays into non-damaging energy. However, patients with darker skin tones may prefer sunscreen instead of sunblock as they tend to be translucent instead of thick and white.”

Choose a sunscreen with fewer rather than more ingredients. Additives like fragrances, alcohol, and other irritants can aggravate sensitive skin and cause problems for people with skin conditions like eczema, acneor psoriasis. This is especially true when looking for the best sunscreen for face skin.

Everybody’s skin is different, and even for each individual, figuring out how to choose sunscreen for your arms and legs will be different than finding the best sunscreen for face skin, which is usually more sensitive. Here are some general rules to go by:

Applying sunscreen correctly matters just as much as wearing it—here’s how to get it right.

How Much Sunscreen Should I Use?

Redd says that you should use about a teaspoon for your face and a full shot glass amount for the whole body.

When Should I Put on Sunscreen?

Make sure to apply sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside and then reapply it every 2 hours.

How Do I Work Sunscreen into My Daily Skincare Routine?

“I usually recommend using your daily facial cleanser, then applying sunscreen or moisturizer with your SPF,” says Redd. “After a few minutes, when that is well absorbed, then you can layer on your makeup products. However, if you’re going to be exposed to the sun all day, remember to still apply sunscreen every 2 hours.”

It’s easy to miss a spot—and some areas are forgotten more often than others.

“The ears and neck are very commonly forgotten,” says Redd. “If you are traveling to a beach or a pool, the feet are also a commonly missed area. It is extra important that the most sun-exposed areas – face, neck, scalp (especially for bald individuals), hands, and forearms are protected.”

So before you leave the house (remember to pack sunscreen for reapplication), make sure to double-check and slather these areas with sunscreen:

Because everyone’s skin is different, it can take some trial and error to find the right one that will become part of your daily skincare routine:

“If you find that your sunscreen is irritating or bothering your skin, it may be time to try another type of sunscreen,” says Redd. “Also, if you repeatedly get sunburned despite sunscreen use, it may be time to reconsider increasing the SPF you are using or change to another type of sunscreen.”

If you find yourself in a situation like that, make sure to work with your dermatologist to find one that will provide strong protection while not irritating your skin. Sometimes it’s a matter of switching to mineral-based sunscreen from a chemical one.

Even the best sunscreen is a temporary filter—not a suit of armor. That’s why it works best as part of a broader sun protection routine. Think protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sticking to the shade when the sun is strongest (typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Sunscreen is still one of the most powerful tools you have for keeping your skin healthy. It’s not just about vanity—it’s about long-term wellness, cancer prevention, and aging gracefully.

Working sunscreen into your daily skincare routine can keep you looking younger and help you avoid the ravages of skin cancer. Merit Holiday Sets 2025 – The Beauty Look Book

0

Merit Holiday Sets are here! I picked up the Mini Flush Blush Balm Trio ($39) and the Archival Lip Essentials Gift Set ($52). Both are available now at Sephora. You can see both in action here and here in case you want a live demo.

Archival Lip Essentials Gift Set

Merit Holiday Archival Lip Essentials Gift Set 2025

The Archival Lip Essentials Gift Set has three full-sized lip items with a new mauve shade called Archival. The set includes a Signature Lip Lightweight Lip Blush, Signature Lip Sheer Lip Liner and the Tinted Lip Oil.

Merit Holiday Archival Lip Essentials Gift Set 2025 swatches

The pencil and lipstick both pull very cool toned on me. I wasn’t sure they would work for my skin and lip tone since most cool colors look greyish on me, but they work! And the gloss really pulls the entire look together.

Merit Holiday Archival Lip Essentials Gift Set 2025 swatches

The Merit Signature Lip Sheer Lip Liner is very different from any other liner on the market. It’s almost like a glossy crayon in lipliner form. Unique for sure and nice for those who like a minimalist look. I love that they glide on the lips and have that glossy finish. Lasting power isn’t quite as long as a matte, but I think they’re really interesting.

The Lip Blush has a very lightweight feel, it’s a subtle kind of lip product but pigment is still very good. Texture is smooth even though it’s matte. This is very different from their other Signature Lipsticks. I tried their lipsticks a while ago when they launched and wasn’t a fan. They felt a little to waxy for my taste, but I might give them another look since so many of you love them. The new Lip Blush in this set is almost like a diffused matte lip tint instead of a regular lipstick. I’m still a glossy lip lover at heart, but I do like the texture and finish of the Lip Blush.

Lip Oils are nice for a subtle tint. These also pull on the sheer side for me but I really like them on top of a lipstick to add dimension and shine. They are very thin in texture so they’re not sticky. Also since the texture is thin they won’t have very long lasting power, but they do stay on longer when you pair them with a lipstick or liner.

I shared a demo of the lipliner and oils in this post here back in April. I don’t think I did a blog post on these so I swatched the shades I have so you can see the new Archival tones next to some of the existing colors.

Mini Flush Blush Balm Trio

I’ve had such mixed feelings about the Merit cream blushes because they’re usually too dewy and sheer for my skin but so many of you asked for a review on this year’s Mini Flush Blush Balm Trio Set. This year has definitely been a transition year for me with our move, aging and skin changes and it’s been noticeably more dry. I’m still in the process of finding a dermatologist since we moved, but since it’s been more dry I can wear more creams.

Merit Mini Flush Blush Balm Trio

I think these are so cute but I still think they are too dewy and creamy for my taste. They’re fun for a pretty flush of color and if you’re into cream blushes that blend to a sheer tint or like that dewy look then I think you’ll really like them.

I will be able to wear these for a night out but will most likely have to top them with a powder blush to set. For a dewy cream blush I think the Dior Backstage Rosy Glow Blush Sticks are better. For something that isn’t quite as dewy the Victoria Beckham Cheeky Posh Cream Blush Sticks or Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks are better options (for me).

Postmodern is a wine colored berry kind of stain

Merit Mini Flush Blush Balm Postmodern

I really love the look with these blended out, I just wish they weren’t as dewy looking. A satin or semi matte finish would be 100% perfect for me.

If you’ve had your eye on these I hope this review is helpful! You can find these now at Sephora.

Teyana Taylor’s Braids for the Win

Let’s talk about that hair moment. Teyana Taylor just stepped out looking like straight up royalty with a braided hairstyle that turned every head on the street. Week 1 Wrap: my 30 day style challenge (30 new outfits, no shopping, no repeats!)

0

You know when you think something sounds like a good idea in your head…. then you say it out loud to 30-odd-thousand followers…. and then you actually have to commit?

Meet me, one week into my 30-day style challenge of creating 30 new outfits, from my existing wardrobe, WITHOUT REPEAT-WEARING ANYTHING (except shoes).

I know, it kinda sounds counter-productive to the ‘versatility’ message I’m always banging on about;

“how many ways can you wear the same thing!?”

but stay with me.

I recently tried on EVERY. SINGLE. PAIR of pants I own (and then I did my skirts, and then my dresses… I stopped before tops haha!) And it made me think somes thoughts.

1️⃣ I really don’t love jeans. – Some are fine, but they’re never MY first pick.

2️⃣ I absolutely do not need to buy anything new.

3️⃣ Size means nothing – and fit is EVERYTHING! – I’m probably a ‘size 13’ (lol), but I wear everything from a 10 to a 16. I tried on pants that still fit in theory, but as I kept trying pair after pair on, I noticed some actually didn’t fit as well.

4️⃣ I love colour 🌈
It makes me happy.
The end.

All good thoughts, but number 2 really hit home. I have SO many gorgeous clothes that I love, but why aren’t I wearing them all more? (Well so many reasons, how long have you got? Time, energy, weather, time.. did I mention no time to play?)

So I decided I was going to not only make the time to play, but to put in the effort to REALLY get more out of my exisiting wardrobe – so I set myself a challenge:

30 days, 30 new outfits, from my existing wardrobe, WITHOUT REPEAT-WEARING ANYTHING

Shall we see how I’m going?

I think I’m doing ok? Especially considering the dreadful weather we’ve had in Auckland recently! (Remind me to do this again when it’s warmer, and dryer, much warmer!)

If you’d like to follow along, I’m sharing videos and photos over on Instagram too, see you there!

Benefits, Uses & Face Care Guide – LAMAV

0

It’s common knowledge that antioxidants are great for our overall health, and when it comes to antioxidants in skincare – Vitamin E is a must have ingredient! Often found as Tocopherol on ingredient labels, Vitamin E isn’t naturally produced by the body but obtained through diet and skincare – playing an important part in protecting cell membranes from environmental stress. You can find Vitamin E in skincare such as moisturisers and serums along with foods rich in fats and oils such as nuts and seeds in addition to fruits and vegetables.

What Is Vitamin E?

This powerful fat-soluble vitamin is a highly-efficient antioxidant that limits the production of free radicals, the unstable molecules that cause cellular damage. It also boasts photoprotective properties and may protect the skin from the damaging effects of UV-exposure. Vitamin E is commonly used in topical formulations for its soothing, anti-inflammatory effects. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this antioxidant so beneficial for the skin.

How Does Vitamin E Benefit the Skin?

Antioxidant Protection

Vitamin E is best known for its ability to fight free radical damage caused by pollution, UV exposure, and environmental stressors. By neutralising these unstable molecules, it helps prevent damage to the skin that may lead to premature aging, fine lines, and dullness.

Deep Hydration

Vitamin E is oil soluble, penetrating deep into the skin’s layers where it delivers long-lasting hydration. It helps strengthen the skin’s natural barrier, locking and sealing in moisture. This makes Vitamin E particularly beneficial for anyone with Dry or Sensitive Skin and anyone living in cold climates.

Promotes Skin Healing

Vitamin E contains natural anti-inflammatory properties that can support skin repair and regeneration. If you have irritated skin it will help to sooth irritation and redness. Vitamin E is also a great post cosmetic treatment option to help your skin recover and may even reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks with regular use.

Age Defence

Hydration plus Antioxidant skin defence are two key components to maintaining healthy, youthful skin. Thanks to Vitamin E’s protective and moisturising qualities, it often helps prevent and slow signs of premature ageing including fine lines, uneven skin tone and loss of elasticity.

Sun Protection Support

While skincare is never a substitute for SPF, Vitamin E may boost your sunscreen’s effectiveness. It helps reduce oxidative stress caused by UV exposure and can help to calm and repair the skin after sun exposure.

What skin types benefit from Vitamin E?

While most skin types can benefit from the many nourishing qualities that Vitamin E has to offer, Dry Skin, Mature Skin and Sensitive Skin will see best results. The deep hydration, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Vitamin E will help to strengthen the skin’s barrier for those with sensitive skin while protecting mature skin from further damage and replenishing moisture for anyone experiencing dryness.

Anyone with oily or acne prone skin should use Vitamin E products with caution as it is an oil-based ingredient which has the potential to block pores depending on the formulation. Look for Tocopherol on the lower end of the ingredients list and always patch test before full use.

How to Implement Vitamin E into your Skincare Routine

From cleansers to moisturisers, Vitamin E can be found in many skincare products, making it easier than ever to boost your Vitamin E intake topically. Below are our top picks that will brighten, nourish and protect the skin.

My Best 5 Skincare Discoveries in Madrid

0

From Madrid with love (and retinal). Five pharmacy finds changing my routine.

Living in Europe as an adult hits different. But living in Spain as a skincare enthusiast? That’s next-level. I’ve long devoured “French Pharmacy Must-Haves” lists, shopped the aisles on every trip abroad, and always left with bags of way too many products. Sadly, I never developed the fierce loyalty those editors and experts suggested. Four months into my Madrid residency, though, I can say it: I’ve already got a handful of die-hard pharmacy favorites.

Best Spanish pharmacy skincare finds.

I’m starting slow. Just five products, all picked up in local Madrid pharmacies (and yes, easily found on Amazon here, too). Think of it as a tight edit: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, and a nighttime treatment. Sunscreen deserves its own dedicated post, so I’ll leave that for later. Let’s go!

Bepanthenol face wash in a bottle.

Bepanthenol Derma Gentle Face Cleanser

Best known for its post-tattoo ointment, Bepanthenol has expanded into facial care, and this cleanser is quite the star. If your skin runs dry, sensitive, or prone to redness, this gel wash is a dream. It reminds me of iS Clinical’s Cleansing Complexbut one with an even more gentle hand.

The hero is Dexpanthenol, a provitamin that converts into vitamin B5 once applied to skin. It supports barrier repair, boosts hydration, and helps calm inflammation. The formula is fragrance-free, has a skin-friendly pH of 5.5, and a silky gel texture that foams beautifully. 20 € / 200 ml

Rilastil micropeeling acne acid toner in an open bottle.

Rilastil Acnestil Micropeeling

The name sounds intense and I don’t have acne, so I hesitated. Until the rave reviews wore me down. And I’m glad they did. This might be one of the best acid toners I’ve used. It’s brilliant for those prone to breakouts, but equally effective if you just want brighter, smoother skin and fewer clogged pores.

The formula pairs Mandelic and Salicylic Acids (AHA + BHA) with Sodium Hyaluronate, Niacinamide, and Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate, an azelaic acid derivative that helps fade stubborn hyperpigmentation. Swipe on with a cotton pad once or twice a day and I promise, your skin will start glowing within a couple of weeks. 16 € / 100 ml

ISDIN Salicylic Renew night serum with a dropper.

ISDIN Salicylic Renewal

ISDIN in Spain vs. ISDIN in the U.S.? Entirely different universes. The brand’s European sunscreens get all the hype (rightfully so), but the skincare deserves equal attention. Case in point: this serum. Designed for combination-to-oily skin types, Salicylic Renewal is equal parts anti-imperfection and anti-aging.

The lightweight gel-serum blends AHA, BHA, and PHA exfoliants with antioxidants to help counter UV damage. Bonus: it’s oil-free, so you get smooth, refined skin that stays calm and radiant without a midday shine. Works well morning or night, and layers seamlessly under sunscreen. 45 € / 30 ml

La Roche-Posay A.Z. Gel Cream in a bottle.

La Roche-Posay Effeclar AZ Gel-Cream

Word is this one might make it stateside soon (how soon is undetermined). Until then, it’s a European exclusive worth tracking down. Normally, I stick with La Roche-Posay’s Toleriane range, but this gel-cream moisturizer has been a standout. Lightweight, quick-absorbing, and perfectly compatible over serums and under SPF.

It’s built around a trio of acids: azelaic (brightening), salicylic (pore-clearing), and hyaluronic (hydrating). Together, they target exactly what I want at 45: decongested, even-toned, well-hydrated skin. A deceptively simple formula that does it all. 30 € / 40 ml

Avene Retinal Glycolic Acid night cream.

Avène Cleanance

First thing I noticed after moving? No RetrinAl in the European Avène lineup. Instead, I grabbed this night treatment in Paris back in March and was thrilled to find it in Madrid pharmacies as well. Don’t be put off by the name—yes, it’s strong, but not harsh if you use it as directed.

The Cleanance range spotlights Milk Thistle extract to keep breakouts in check. This particular formula fuses Glycolic Acid for gentle exfoliation with Retinal (retinaldehyde), the more potent, direct vitamin A derivative just one step away from retinoic acid. It stimulates collagen, refines texture, and evens tone without the dryness many retinoids bring. I use it two to three nights a week, and rarely need moisturizer on top. Potent yet balanced. 25 € / 40 ml

I promise to come back with Vol II before the year is over so come back to visit. Also make sure to keep your eyes peeled for my Euro Pharmacy Sunscreen post.

Train with The Eyelash Emporium

0

What could be a better subject to discuss than the thing that drives us and is in the heart of everything we do – EDUCATION!

In this month’s blog Nikki is going to tell you what it is about education she LOVES so much! And she will discuss what you can expect on our training days – so if you’re thinking about training with us, read on…

Nikki says; “I absolutely love learning – I always feel you can learn something from everyone you meet. This could be in your work, personal or just day to day life. The lash industry is ever changing and evolving so it is essential to continue your student journey. This doesn’t matter if you are a new lash tech, an experienced lash artist or a lash guru teaching others – here is always something to learn!

Training courses are obviously a fantastic way to learn but there are also many other great ways too. Workshops, mentoring, following your favourite educators or lash idols on social media or reading blogs.

I love our courses and how passionate our educators are. It’s so important when looking for someone to train with, that you do your research. Make sure you don’t just go for the cheapest option. Research the company, the educator, look at pictures of their work.

Go for a company that has a good balance of theory and practical. I really like the fact that you receive an online pre-course with The Eyelash Emporium.
This gives students the chance to get an insight and learn a lot of the theory at their own pace before they attend the training day. This means we get so much more time for hands-on practical lashing too with models, so students leave confident ready to tackle their case studies.

On a day’s training I always get butterflies on the morning. This is mainly as I’m a massive perfectionist and I want my students to have the best day and for them to get everything out of it they had hoped for.

We start the training with a recap of the theory students have learned in the pre-course prior to coming and we get them picking up lashes straightaway to get them used to their new best friends – their tweezers.

We then move on to mannequin work to gain confidence whilst all the time continuing to build theory knowledge. After lunch this is when we move to an afternoon of live model work. It’s an intense day but it prepares you for your cases studies.

Watching the students on the day is amazing as they come in so nervous, and they leave feeling so much calmer and excited to start practicing.

Book your lash training course online today or by calling our Customer Services team on 01753 650656.

I hope to see some of you on one of our training courses or mentoring soon!”

How Lawmakers Are Expanding Coverage for GLP-1 Medications

0

Between 2022 and 2024, approximately 25 states implemented some form of taxpayer-funded coverage for anti-obesity medications. As reported on Pharmacy Times, during the first 2 quarters of 2025, at least 14 states introduced legislation or took regulatory actions impacting coverage for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP) drugs. State actions have been directed to individual or group health plans, state Medicaid programs, or both.

In January 2025, North Dakota became the first state to mandate insurance coverage for GLP-1 and GIP medications by amending the state Essential Health Benefit (EHB) clause. This was accomplished through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a North Dakota statute enacted in 2023, and an updated regulation from the state insurance department, which collectively added the drugs to the EHB plan for the state.2 This means that individual and group health plans must provide coverage for these medications to be compliant with the provisions of the ACA.

State initiatives directed toward mandating coverage by individual and group health plans include the following:

California: AB 575 directs plans to cover outpatient prescriptions for at least 1 antiobesity medication.

Colorado enacted a law (SB 25-048) that allows individuals to purchase extended coverage for GLP-1 drugs. This is a pull-back from a previous program that covered these drugs for state employees.

Connecticut: HB 5038 directs coverage of GLP-1 drugs for state employees, and HB 5485 directs coverage of GLP-1 drugs for other qualifying individuals.

Iowa: SSB 1138 would require state health agencies to review anti-obesity/GLP-1 drugs as a prescription benefit for state employees.

Montana: SB 417 would have mandated coverage for anti-obesity medications. This bill did not advance to enactment.

New Mexico: SB 193 would have mandated coverage for anti-obesity medications. This bill did not advance to enactment.

Texas: HB 2412 would have mandated coverage for GLP-1 medications. This bill did not advance to enactment.

Washington: HB 1197/SB 5166 would require state agency reports on future insurance coverage for GLP-1 drugs in the state medical plan.

West Virginia: HB 2912 would require insurance coverage of GLP-1 drugs for a patient with a valid prescription.

State initiatives directed toward extending coverage within Medicaid programs include the following:

Arkansas: HB 1332 would have required the state’s Medicaid to evaluate claims for the diagnosis frequency of obesity-related conditions and the cost of the conditions. This bill did not advance from the Senate.

Mississippi: SB 2867 would have added coverage of GLP-1 medications to state Medicaid plans. This bill passed the legislature but was vetoed by the governor on the grounds of fiscal challenges to the state. The bill included coverage for many other health care reimbursement matters and was not limited to GLP-1 medications.

Virginia lawmakers introduced an amendment to the state’s Medicaid plan. Virginia currently covers GLP-1 medications for the treatment of obesity; however, this reimbursement is predicated on several factors, including documented evidence of medical necessity, prior authorization requirements, patient eligibility and budgetary constraints within the state’s Medicaid program.

The economics of GLP-1 agents and other pharmacologic therapies for obesity remain central to policy decisions on insurance coverage. The clinical evidence of a positive benefit from these agents continues to accumulate. Perhaps this evidence will eventually tip the scales in favor of coverage and open access to more patients.

What Is Colostrum, the Ingredient at the Center of a Buzzy Wellness Trend?

0

Scroll through social media, and it won’t be long before you stumble on colostrum supplements—a buzzy nutrition trend that makes big claims and leaves us with even bigger questions. Kourtney Kardashian Barker is the latest celeb to capitalize on the craze: Her wellness brand, Lemme, has introduced a new line of colostrum gummies purported to support gut health, promote healthy digestion, manage bloating, and enhance “full-body wellness.”

Made from the milk-like substance secreted in late pregnancy and the first few days of breastfeeding, colostrum—normally only consumed by infants and other baby mammals, like calves—is being touted as a magic bullet for adults. Companies claim a wide range of health benefits, from improving your skin to regulating digestion (looking at you, Kourtney), and some even say it boosts your immunity and speeds up post-workout recovery. Sounds great, sure, but does the research follow in line? We asked nutrition, lactation, and GI experts to break it down.

What exactly is colostrum, and why are people so into it now?

If you’re stuck on the fact that colostrum is a precursor to breast milk, let’s clear something up (and hopefully put your mind at ease in the process): You’re not ingesting a human bodily fluid when you take a colostrum supplement. While mammals of all kinds (humans included) produce colostrum to meet the nutritional and developmental demands of their offspring, the stuff you see in commercial products is bovine colostrum—colostrum that comes from cows. (For clarity, however, we’ll just refer to it as “colostrum” here.) In most cases, the supplement form is sold dried or in capsules rather than as a liquid.

Compared to the milk that comes later, colostrum is thicker and more concentrated. It’s especially rich in nutrients that reduce infection risk and gut inflammation in newborns, like prebiotics, as well as enzymes and proteins with antibacterial and antiviral properties, like lysozyme and lactoferrin, Jennifer T. Smilowitz, PhD, lactation education counselor and assistant professor in the department of nutrition at the University of California, Davis, tells SELF. This isn’t an accident: At birth for both humans and cows, the gut is slightly permeable, which can increase the potential for infection and inflammation—“so colostrum fed in the first few days of life helps fortify” it, Dr. Smilowitz says.

Bovine colostrum also contains the same helpful nutrients as cow’s milk—and more, Cara Harbstreet, MS, RD, of Street Smart Nutrition, tells SELF. That includes fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E, plus important minerals like calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium. Some, like IGF-1, which helps bones and tissue develop normally, actually exist in higher concentrations in the colostrum.

In Tucson, sun, heat, and dry air are unforgiving to your skin. Your skin requires treatments that protect, restore, and show a natural radiant glow and accommodate your lifestyle. Here, the focus is on individualized solutions that make you happy and comfortable with your skin. These Tucson beauty treatment secrets will take you to the radiant, healthy-looking complexion that you deserve.

Begin With a Customized Skin Analysis

Before any Tucson beauty treatment, it helps to understand your skin. Your first visit begins with a consultation and skin analysis. This will identify your skin type, areas of concern, whether dryness, acne, pigmentation, or fine lines, and what you wish to happen through treatment. This is your time to describe what you would like to improve and find out what can realistically make it happen.

The ideal treatment program considers lifestyle factors, including sun, hydration, stress, and diet. Doing this, all Tucson beauty treatments are customized to satisfy specific requirements, focusing on real results instead of temporary solutions.

Enzyme Therapy for Sensitive-Strength Glow

One of the most effective and soothing Tucson beauty treatments is enzyme therapy. This therapy:

  • Uses natural enzymes that exfoliate dead skin gently
  • Increases circulation and keeps cellular turnover healthy
  • Lightens pale complexions and calms redness

Ideal for sun-scarred, dry, sensitive, or acne skin, enzyme therapy is calming and gentling without irritation. It is ideal to fulfill the needs of desert skin and induces radiant health without severity.

Microneedling and Peels for More Intensive Benefits

For those who need more intense enhancements in the skin, professional peels and microneedling are excellent Tucson beauty treatments. Microneedling stimulates collagen production and may enhance the looks of fine lines and scars, as well as texture. It causes your skin to rejuvenate itself from the inside out with strengthened and more elastic skin over time.

Peels are effective in neutralizing pigmentation, sun spots, and skin coloration. Peels are carefully selected to treat your skin concerns without disrupting its natural barrier. These are an investment in the long-term health of your skin.

Hydrating Facials for Desert Skin

Sunny days and arid air dehydrate the skin, making it parched and lackluster. Hydrating facials are an ideal Tucson beauty treatment to fill in moisture and luster. The facials normally involve enzyme exfoliation, penetrating deep with moisturizing masks, and massage to stimulate blood flow.

Daily hydration treatments, even a hydrating facialcan reduce fine lines and have your skin look refreshed. Incorporating regular hydration treatments into your regimen can keep your skin soft, even in Tucson’s rough weather.

Fighting Acne With Professional Help

Acne is annoying, especially when sitting dryness and oiliness simultaneously in the weather. One Tucson beauty care plan for acne is professional facials that unplug the pores to clear out blockage while calming inflammation.

Patients are provided with enhanced protocols that facilitate healing and reduce future breakouts. Daily visits and frequent home treatment are key procedures in treating acne. If you need a Tucson acne clinic, you can find personalized guidance and trusted treatments to help guide your skin toward clarity.

Organic Sugaring: Smooth, Gentle Hair Removal

Waxing can dry out and inflame desert skin, so organic sugaring is a good Tucson beauty treatment to think about. Benefits are:

  • Natural sugar paste that sticks to hair and dead skin
  • Gentler hair removal in the direction of hair growth to minimize redness
  • Regrowth over time with less irritation

Sugaring sessions are typically recommended every three weeks, and tips are given to help keep your skin relaxed, healthy, and glowing while maintaining smooth results.

Body Enzyme Treatments for Whole-Body Treatment

Your face is not the only part of your skin that can be properly maintained. Body enzyme treatments are an effective Tucson beauty treatment solution for problems like body acne, uneven texture, or irregular tone. Our treatments have the ability to improve the appearance of your back, arms, and legs by peeling and stimulating skin rejuvenation in a gentle way.

Patients who need full care will enjoy body treatments as a valuable component of their skincare routine, especially in an environment that dehydrates the skin and leaves it unbalanced.

Advanced Anti-Aging Solutions

When you want to address fine lines, sagging, or loss of firmness, advanced anti-aging treatments can deliver a shot in the arm. Such Tucson beauty treatments may involve microneedling, enzyme treatment, and tailored facials that trigger collagen formation.

Patients usually notice tighter, smoother skin with frequent treatment. Enhancing these benefits with a recommended home care regimen can augment your glow while strengthening your skin against environmental stress.

Home Care to Augment Your Treatments

Consistency is the secret to maintaining results. On your first Tucson beauty treatment, following a home care routine helps extend the benefits of your treatments. This can be gentle cleansers, hydrating serums, and daily sun protection. High-quality products help maintain your skin between visits, keeping it clean, hydrated, and protected. Home care treatments and professionals collaborate to produce and maintain healthy, glowing skin.

Why Your Skin Needs Customized Treatments in Tucson

Tucson’s life comes with harsh sun exposure, dryness, and unforeseen weather shifts. All of these may result in dryness, sun spots, and aging if your skin is not properly maintained. A Tucson beauty routine that fits your requirements can keep your skin glowing and strong.
