East Asia Meets The Southwest – Embellished Gel Nail Art | Chalkboard Nails

0

I have been waiting for this day since the beginning of the challenge. Not only because it meant that I had successfully completed the gauntlet for the fifth (!!!) year in a row, but also because I had a manicure that I have been dying to recreate for a very long time.

This beauty of a manicure is completely inspired by 111NAIL salon in Japan. I love it SO much. I tried to copy it to the best of my ability (and materials) and I am beyond happy with the outcome. I just adore the aesthetic of Japanese nail art; it’s always so refined and balanced.

Since the challenge is now over, I decided to these in gel and on both hands so I can enjoy them for a while. Here are the products that I used:

Gelish – Hot Rod Red
Red Carpet Manicure – Sandal Scandal
Akzentz Gel Play in White and Black

Gold caviar beads
Triangle studs
Turquoise teardrop charm
Round gold frame

Akzentz Bling On (used to attach 3D embellishments)
Presto Top Gel (thick gel topcoat)
Gelish Foundation (go-to gel basecoat)

Southwest-inspired gel nail art by @chalkboardnails

These nails weren’t hard to do at all; however, they were pretty time consuming.

The drag marble nails are my favorite part and are beyond easy, especially in gel. All you need to do is apply the colors in arced stripes, and then drag a clean striper brush through them to create the patterns. Cure the marbling in your lamp and you’re set!

The other nails are basically just dots and embellishments, which I attached using Akzentz Bling On. It’s a super strong, thick gel that grabs ahold of your charms or studs and helps keep them in place once cured. It made the process of placing the gold bits a lot easier, especially on a manicure like this with so many elements.

I made sure to finish with a thick gel topcoat to help smooth out the edges on the 3D pieces.

If you have a moment, be sure to go give @111nail_omotesando a follow on Instagram, I have completely copied this manicure from them and there is so much more gorgeous work to be seen on that account.

That’s a wrap on the challenge for this year! Stay tuned for my 2015 roundup, and congratulations to those of you who have finished as well!

Slather or Dab? The Right Amounts for Each Product – skinfo

0

When it comes to skincare, we endlessly talk about the type of products and number of steps in our routines, but never how much of them we should be using. At Advanced Dermatology and skinfo® we recommend a CORE 4 regimen for anti-aging, which includes antioxidants (typically found in serums), an exfoliant (found in retinol), growth factors (collagen-building peptides), and sunscreen.

If you’ve ever tried to rub in an excessive amount of product only to be met with a pilling and rolling mess, then you know that the amount of each product used is equally as important as using the right products for your skin. Using too much product can be ineffective, a waste of hard-earned cash, cause skin irritation, redness, oily residue or breakouts, and a disrupted skin barrier. Similarly, if you’ve ever felt like your products aren’t “working,” or you are spending too much time getting the product to absorb into your skin, it could be an issue of dosage. It is always better to under-apply than over-apply. Many dermatologists recommend easing your skin into a product by using a lesser amount to start, especially when it comes to active ingredients. Many products only require a pea or pearl sized amount for the whole face, so it is important to remember that often less is more.

When it comes to facial cleansers, you can feel confident pouring a nickel-sized amount into your palm and massaging it into your skin, which will create a considerable lather in any foaming product, leaving the skin feeling clean. Because serums and retinol tend to be so emollient and packed with high concentrations of skin-loving ingredients, the size of a chocolate chip tends to be the right amount to see results without overusing or wasting the product. For lotions and creams, a dollop the size of a quarter is enough to coat the face, neck, and the much forgotten décolletage. With the thicker texture of masks and zinc-based sun protectants it is recommended to use as much as it takes to coat your face. Last, but not least, are eye creams. Use a dab the size of a pea, split between both eyes along the orbital bone.

Every product that makes up your skincare routine has its own recommended method of usage, whether an application or quantity is in question. As a rule of thumb, always make sure you read the instructions on the packaging of every product. Your skin and wallet will thank you!

I have a sale alert to share! It’s one that’s too good to pass up! Ulta is having their 21 Days of Beauty Sale again and they have some amazing deals with different daily deals 50% off. I shared a tutorial with everything on sale this week here. In case you don’t follow on social I wanted to highlight some of the deals here too.

Ulta 21 Days of Beauty Sale

The sale is a little different from most retail sales since they have 1-day offers on select items, but I do think 50% off is the biggest discount I’ve seen from any retailer so I do think it’s worth checking out and marking your calendar.

Ulta has shared a preview of upcoming sales by date so you can browse all the deals in advance here. They also have select items are on sale for a full week, although most of the sales happen for one day only.

My peachy pink makeup look with the sale dates:

MAC Kinda Sexy and Buxom Lip Polish in April

I also picked up some of the Clinique Lip Oils ahead of the sale date, but they will also be 50% off on Sunday 9/7. The Almost Lipstick in Black Honey still remains a cult classic, I remember wearing this in my college days! I love seeing them expand the line to other variations and formulas. The Lip Oils are beautiful and I think the Black Honey shade is a great color for those who want something a little more dressy but still subtle.

68 feel-good movies guaranteed to boost your mood

0

Feel-good movies are criminally underrated. Sure, we love a hard-hitting blockbuster as much as the next person, but some lighthearted entertainment is definitely what we need as the festive season approaches.

We have delved into the vaults of Netflix, NOW TV, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and the rest, and found some seriously feel-good movies, from dreaming about our own lives as royalty in The Princess Diaries to rom-com classics such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

There are also pom-pom dazzling cheerleading routines in Bring It Ona tour of the hilariously cutthroat world of fashion in The Devil Wears Prada and an ode to male friendship in I Love You, Man.

Also, how about The Terminal starring Tom Hanks (because doesn’t Tom Hanks make everything better?), or Will Ferrell’s LOL-worthy hit Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Sagaalso starring Rachel McAdams. Or guaranteed laughs with Tiffany Haddish and Regina Hall in Girls Trip? We even included some musical classics like Grease, Hairspray and Mary Poppins. You’re welcome.

So, if you are looking for an easygoing flick – something to make you laugh, inspire you or generally restore your faith in humanity, here are the best 68 feel-good movies for you…

Using Layering to Extend Your Wardrobe Versatility — Inside Out Style

0

twitterpinterestlinkedinmail

Layering isn’t just for cold climates – it’s the secret weapon of a truly versatile wardrobe.  You may need to layer in summer when you work in an air-conditioned environment, which is unrelated to the outside temperature.  Or how about in winter, when you go from freezing cold outside to overheated inside!

When you know how to layer with purpose, you can transition smoothly between seasons, dress codes, and even moods without buying more clothes. Whether you’re swapping jackets for sheer shirts as summer approaches in Australia or adding knits for warmth in Europe and North America, layering lets you adapt with ease and creativity. The trick is knowing how to do it intentionally – balancing function, proportion, and texture so every outfit feels put together, not piled on.

Layering is one of the most practical and powerful tools for getting more from your wardrobe. Done well, it helps you adapt to shifting temperatures, varied occasions, and even the evolving needs of your lifestyle. The goal isn’t to wear more – it’s to wear smarter.

Start with a Strong Base

Every great outfit begins with a solid foundation. Think of your base layer as the canvas that supports the rest of your look.

Choose:

  • Lightweight, breathable fabrics that skim (not cling) – such as cotton, bamboo, or viscose.
  • Neutral tones  – your best ones relate to your hair, skin and eye colours (find out more about that here).
  • Simple silhouettes: batwing sleeves do not make a great layering base; instead, opt for tops that are not too chunky so you can pop a jacket over the top with ease.

In warmer months, these same pieces can shine on their own; in cooler weather, they anchor your layers without adding bulk.

Mix Textures or Patterns for Depth and Dimension

Layering is as much about feel as it is about form. Mixing fabrics with different textures creates visual interest and prevents outfits from looking flat.

Try:

  • Smooth satin or silk under soft knits for contrast.
  • Denim with linen for casual ease.
  • A structured jacket over a draped top to add polish.
  • A monochromatic outfit can be chic and interesting when using a variety of textures – get some more tips here.
  • Have fun mixing patterns in the same colour palette- get more tips heremix patterns in acessories and outerlayers

If your wardrobe feels too “samey,” experiment with texture first – it’s one of the easiest ways to make familiar pieces feel new again.

Play with Proportion and Fit

Layering works best when you strike a balance between volume and length. If one piece is oversized, the others should be more fitted or streamlined.

For example:

  • Pair a cropped jacket with a longer blouse or tunic underneath.
  • Add a cropped jacket over a floaty dress.
  • Tuck a fitted top into wide-leg trousers, then top it with a longline cardigan.

This balance of shapes creates movement and flow – keeping the outfit intentional rather than overwhelming. Check out more tips on balancing volume in outfits here.

Use Accessories to Refine and Define

Accessories are the finishing touch that turns layering into styling. They can tie colours together, emphasise structure, or shift a look from casual to polished.

Consider:

  • A belt over a cardigan or blazer to define your waist (if you have one).
  • Lightweight scarves for colour and pattern, easy to remove as temperatures rise.
  • Scarves to add extra warmth if the weather is cool.
  • Layered necklaces or earrings to draw attention upward and balance heavier clothing textures.

scarves are great for layering in both summer and winterIn warm climates, accessories become your layering pieces – adding personality without the heat.

Think Seasonally: Warm to Cool (and Back Again)

The magic of layering lies in its adaptability.

For Southern Hemisphere summersswap heavy outerwear for:

  • Sheer shirts worn open over tanks.
  • Lightweight vests or linen overshirts.
  • Unlined blazers or vests for structure without warmth.

For Northern Hemisphere wintersreverse the process:

  • Add thermal base layers under lightweight blouses.
  • Use turtlenecks or knits beneath dresses and jumpsuits.
  • Layer coats with scarves and textured wraps for comfort and style.

By learning to adjust your layers, you can extend every outfit across seasons – keeping your wardrobe useful all year round.

Colour Flow and Harmony

When layering, keep your colours working with each other. Aim for a cohesive flow:

  • Monochromatic layers (different shades of one colour) look effortlessly elegant.
  • Tonal combinations (warm neutrals, soft blues, or muted greens) feel balanced.
  • Contrasting accents can add personality, but anchor them with a neutral piece.

If you know your colour palettelayering becomes simple – everything works together naturally.

If you’re still figuring yours out, my 7 Steps to Style program will help you identify your ideal colours, so building a layered wardrobe becomes intuitive rather than trial-and-error.

The Intersection of Function and Fashion

Layering is more than a style trick – it’s a mindset. It allows you to make clothing decisions that are practical and expressive. You stay warm when needed, cool when required, and polished throughout. It also reflects how modern wardrobes should work – adaptable, efficient, and authentic.

When you think of layering as a creative system rather than a seasonal necessity, it transforms how you see your clothes. You start to appreciate each piece for its flexibility, not just its look.

Layering isn’t about adding more; it’s about making more of what you already have. It gives you the freedom to adapt, the opportunity to experiment, and the confidence that comes from knowing your wardrobe works for you – not against you.

Start with a strong base, play with proportion, and use accessories and colour flow to pull it all together. The next time you get dressed, think in layers – not limits.

The Best Ways To Organize Your Lash Extension Tweezers — EBLLashes

0

Being an organized lash artist makes you a better lash artist! When you’re organized, you’re less likely to make mistakes, you can work more efficiently, and you gain confidence and control. It’s about presentation, too. Clients notice when you are clean and organized. So I wanted to share what I’ve found to be the best ways to organize your lash extension tweezers.

Let’s start with different ways that you can store your tweezers when you are not using them. At Extensions By Lindy, we have a few organizational tools that can help: a Folding Tweezer Case, a Magnetic Case, and the fun containers that they come in!

The folding tweezer case is leather and can hold six tweezers comfortably. It is great for tweezers that are a little longer in length. The magnetic case is a bit more compact—great for those shorter tweezers. With the magnetic case, there are no bands to pull over the tweezer to secure it. Rather, the tweezer attaches magnetically to the case for easy in-and-out use. The magnetic case can also store up to six tweezers.

Each EBL Lashes pair of tweezers comes up with a container to store them in, and these are convenient and useful. They hold one tweezer each and keep them clean and ready to use.

How many tweezers should you keep on hand? When you’re beginning, we recommend that you have enough lash tweezers to get you through your busiest work day. About six pairs of eyelash tweezers is a good start. That way, if you drop one, you have a backup.

You can clean them at the end of each day and have them ready to use the next day. We recommend that you never put dirty lash tweezers in the cases, but always wait until they are clean and then store them. It’s a great idea to have a dirty implement case on hand to keep the clean and dirty lash tweezers separated. Some states require it.

One of the best ways to organize your lash extension tweezers is to clean them after each use. There are different ways to clean tweezers. Read our blog about how to clean eyelash extension tweezers. For questions or more information, contact us!

Three Outfits Formulas from NET-A-PORTER That I’m Loving Right Now

*This post contains a collaboration with NET-A-PORTER & loaned products

You know when you make an online order and it arrives and you LOVE IT ALL. This blog post right here is one of those moments. I spent quite honestly, HOURS on the NET-A-PORTER website* crafting three outfits that I felt very drawn to and featured a tonne of knitwear that I could see coming in very handy as the chill starts to come in, and I absolutely love it all. It’s hard to pick a favourite of the three, but there is one that pips it the post – just. And if you’re just window shopping right now, then I’ve added some outfit formulas to add to your notes for next time you’re standing in front of your wardrobe and have no idea where to start. Here are some ideas…

OUTFIT ONE

What is cosier than knits, on knits, on knits?! I’m talking a knitted tank top + knitted trousers + cashmere jumper + cashmere jacket + Mary-Janes. It just doesn’t get cosier than that. Putting this on just felt like the perfect weekend outfit, for like a little brunch out or just hanging with friends. So comfortable, but still so darn chic – it’s the addition of the structured jacket and shoes that take it to the next level here. This was the first time that I’d tried Guest in Residence – a new brand to NET-A-PORTER – and I currently have both of the items in basket, so yeah, I’m a fan! The Oversized Cashmere Jumper* felt like actual butter, and the Topstitched Cashmere Jacket* was something that I hadn’t seen before – half cardigan, half jacket and a layering piece that I think would come in super handy over the winter months. All beautifully crafted and all 100% cashmere.

OUTFIT TWO

Say you’ve got a day where you’re a bit ‘here, there and everywhere’ – this is what I would recommend. For me that’s a day of meetings in London. It’s only a short walk for me to get to the train and then before you know it I’m in the tropical climate, also known as the underground. And really I do very little walking outside as I’m just between tubes and meeting spots all day and usually doing quite the power walk to get from place to place. You get it – I’m warm! And carrying around all your extra layers as you peel off is not the one! So for those days I’d recommend – a sleeveless knit + mid-weight coat + straight leg jeans + pointed boots. Your arms are covered but once you reach your destination you can cool down without melting. I really want to discuss the AGOLDE 90’s Pinch Waist Long Jeans*. They are such a good length to wear with boots and have that KHAITE Danielle Jean* feel, but personally I find the AGOLDE way more comfortable. Speaking of comfort – the Toteme Mid-Heel Boots*?! I walked 20,000 steps in them in New York and whilst I was quite pumped to take them off at the end of the day, still not a blister in sight. They are so good.

SHOP THE OUTFIT

OUTFIT THREE

This might just be my favourite outfit from the three, but this really is a do-it-all one. The wide leg jeans with a pointed boot is such a classy silhouette and the roll-neck does the practical thing of keeping you toasty. Chunky roll-neck + belt + wide-leg jeans + pointed boots – is a formula to add to your repertoire immediately. I’d been looking for a turn-up jean that is right for my 5’7″ frame and these are it. The AGOLDE Dame Jeans* are nice and high on the waist and not too baggy in the rear. I’d recommend going one or two sizes smaller than your usual depending on where you want it to sit on the hips (for a lower rise fit go one size down, or higher on the waist go two sizes down). And can we just take a second for the Toteme T-Lock Bag*!? It has so easily slotted into every outfit that I put together for this and is big enough to actually be practical for daily use without being unwieldy. I am very, very tempted to make a purchase.
