The Differences Between Squalane vs. Squalene in Moisturizers

0

Despite their similar-sounding names and related chemical structures, squalane and squalene have distinct characteristics, making one more favorable than the other in moisturizers.

Therefore, understanding the differences between these two compounds is essential for making informed decisions about skincare routines and product selection.

In this article, we will delve into the unique qualities of squalane and squalene, their benefits for the skin, and how to incorporate the right option into your skincare routine.

NB: I can show you how to never have acne again. If you have acne and want it goneread this message.

What is Squalene?

Squalene is a natural organic compound found in our skin’s sebum, or oil, and is also produced by plants such as olives and animals.

It is a type of lipid or fat molecule that helps lubricate and protect the skin from external pathogens.

Furthermore, squalene plays an essential role in maintaining our skin’s health and appearance by preventing transepidermal moisture loss and aiding in the production of ceramides, which helps maintain the skin’s barrier function.

However, squalene is not typically used in skincare products due to its instability and tendency to oxidize quickly, which can cause allergic reactions, sensitivities, and inflammatory skin conditions such as acne.

What is Squalane?

Squalane is essentially a byproduct of squalene through hydrogenation, a process that involves adding hydrogen atoms to squalene to make it more stable and less prone to oxidation.

Squalane is also the closest lab-made replica of our skin’s natural oil.

Since squalane is the more stable version of squalene and doesn’t oxidize as easily, it’s the type of lipid that’s used in skincare products, particularly in moisturizers, to help improve various skin concerns, including dryness, itchiness, inflammation, sun damage, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Skin Benefits of Squalane

Hydrated and radiant skin after using squalane, emphasizing its moisturizing and rejuvenating properties.

Deep Moisturization

Squalane is well-known for its ability to prevent trans-epidermal moisture loss.

Due to its similarities to our skin’s natural oil, squalane creates a lipid barrier on the skin’s surface to prevent moisture from the deeper layers of the skin from evaporating through its surface.

This makes it an ideal ingredient for those with dry, dehydrated, and flaky skin, especially during winter.

Furthermore, squalane helps regulate oil production and balance the skin’s moisture levels, making it suitable for all skin types.

Antioxidant Protection

Squalane is also a potent antioxidant that protects the skin against environmental stressors such as UV rays, pollution, and free radicals.

These external factors can accelerate signs of aging by damaging the skin’s cells and collagen fibers, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.

Squalane works by neutralizing free radicals and preventing oxidative stress, helping to keep the skin looking youthful and healthy.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

As mentioned earlier, squalane has anti-inflammatory properties that make it beneficial for those with inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea.

By creating a layer of protection on the skin’s surface, squalane softens dry and inflamed areas and actively fights inflammation by promoting cellular regeneration.

Additionally, squalane’s antioxidant activity contributes to its anti-inflammatory effects.

Oxidative stress and inflammation are closely linked processes; therefore, by exerting antioxidant activity, squalane counteracts oxidative stress, thereby potentially reducing inflammatory responses.

This action can help soothe and calm the skin, reducing redness, irritation, and itchiness associated with these conditions.

Furthermore, squalane can also help heal wounds and improve the overall appearance of scars.

Refine Skin Tone and Texture

Regular use of squalane can also lead to smoother, softer, and even-toned skin.

Since it helps to retain moisture and improve skin elasticity, it can also help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Additionally, squalane also has a plumping effect on the skin, making it look more youthful and radiant.

The Side Effects of Squalane

Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some individuals might be allergic to squalane, which can lead to redness, itching, or rashes.

Acne: As a heavy lipid, squalane can cause clogged pores, leading to acne or milia, especially if overused or used alongside other comedogenic ingredients.

Oily Residue: Excessive application can leave the skin feeling greasy and shiny, which may be uncomfortable for those with oily skin.

Lipid Peroxidation: High concentrations of squalane can cause lipid peroxidation, which can damage the skin’s barrier function and potentially lead to irritation and inflammatory skin conditions.

Who is Squalane Best Suited For?

While squalane is suitable for all skin types, it’s best suited for those with dry and textured skin struggling to maintain hydration.

Squalane is also an excellent choice for mature skin, as it can help improve signs of aging, such as wrinkles and uneven skin tone caused by sun damage.

Finally, squalane is also suitable for those with sensitive and reactive skin due to its ability to reduce inflammation and provide an antioxidant effect to counteract cellular damage from free radicals.

Who Shouldn’t Use Squalane?

On the other hand, squalane may not be the most suitable ingredient for acne-prone skin as it can clog pores, which may exacerbate existing breakouts and trigger the formation of new pimples.

However, squalane can be helpful on a case-by-case basis for oily skin that’s not acne-prone.

Some individuals with oily skin may notice their skin becoming more balanced and moisturized rather than greasy and shiny, while others might find squalane too heavy and occlusive.

Therefore, while squalane is not necessarily harmful for oily skin, results will vary from person to person.

Additionally, squalane can sometimes irritate the skin, especially if the product being used has been kept in an unsanitary environment that has caused the ingredient to oxidize or expire.

Mastercard and L’Oréal Launch Industry-Specific Business Card to Digitise Beauty Commerce in Latin America

0

THE WHAT? Mastercard and L’Oréal have partnered to introduce the L’Oréal Mastercard BusinessCard, a financial product aimed at bringing salon owners, stylists, and beauty entrepreneurs in Latin America into the digital economy.

THE DETAILS Launched initially in Mexico through issuer Clara, the L’Oréal Mastercard BusinessCard is positioned as the first credit card in the region tailored specifically to the beauty sector. It targets salon operators, independent professionals, creators, and distributors within L’Oréal’s network, with expansion planned across additional markets in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region.

The initiative is designed to address entrenched cash dependency across beauty services in LAC, where an estimated 350,000 salons operate and 90% of B2B payments are still processed through cash, cheques, or transfers. Mastercard and L’Oréal frame the card as a structural solution to payment friction, limited credit access, and operational inefficiencies across small and micro-enterprises.

Further rollout will rely on additional financial partners as digitisation efforts extend to other LAC markets.

THE WHY? The partnership responds to persistent financial inclusion challenges within the region’s fragmented beauty services sector, aiming to formalise transactions, reduce fraud exposure, and create credit pathways for small operators.

Bronzer Placement for a Sculpted Look- Jane Iredale

0

When I was first asked to write a blog post on sculpting with PureBronze Matte Bronzer, I was a little apprehensive. I’d never fully mastered contouring as a skill, having spent years trying to shape my round, pale face with bronzers that were always too orange for my skin tone.

Luckily, I knew the person to turn to for expert guidance: Shawn, our Director of Artistry and Education, who graciously offered to give me a tutorial on how to create a natural sculpted look.

The Lesson

How to Contour with Highlighter

When sculpting the face, Shawn recommends highlighting first and then contouring, as that makes it easier to tell where you need to add definition. To highlight, choose a shade that is a few shades lighter than the skin tone or use a product that has luminosity to create a similar lifted effect.

Once the highlighter is blended, apply the contour with a contour brush to the areas of the face you want to draw back. Common bronzer placement areas include: along the hairline, in the hollows of the cheeks, along the nose and along the jawline. Pro tip: When sculpting the jaw line, remember to begin behind the ear so there’s not an obvious line where the contour starts.

Then, when you’ve achieved the desired level of sculpting, the key to making it all look natural is to blend everything. Thoroughly. Keep the areas that are closer to the hairline darker and gradually blend the color out more with your contour brush as you move towards the middle of the face.

Makeup

How to Contour Your Face with Makeup

To ready my face for makeup, I prime my skin with Smooth Affair® Brightening Face Primer. Next, I dot Glow Time Pro™ BB Cream in GT1 on my cheeks, forehead, chin and nose and quickly blend it in with the Blending/Contouring Brush. (I find a little of this product goes a long way and it dries down quickly so it’s key to start blending ASAP.)

When it comes to highlighters, I like to go luminous vs matte so I add some Active Light® Under-eye Concealer in 1 to the high points of my face, blending it in with the Blending/Contouring Brush. For extra glow, I top it off with the Glow Time® Highlighter Stick in Solstice.

I sweep PureBronze Matte Bronzer in Light(Shawn’s recommendation as it’s not an overly warm-toned bronzer), underneath my cheekbones around my forehead and under my jawline, blending with the Blending/Contouring Brush.

Since I have a rounder face, I skip adding blush to the apples of my cheeks and instead apply Glow Time® Blush Stick in Balmy from my temple, along the top of the cheek bone to the center of my cheek.

I add PureBrow® Precision Pencil in Dark Brown to my eyebrows for definition, sweep the shimmery rose gold shade from the Ravishing PurePressed® Eye Shadow Trio across my eyelids and lengthen my lashes with Longest Lash® Thickening and Lengthening Mascara in Black Ice.

I finish the look with a swipe of our NEW ColorLuxe Hydrating Cream Lipstick in Sorbet for a subtle hint of coral.

Looking in the mirror, I’m pleasantly surprised to see that my face does look sculpted and lifted in a natural way. I also do not look orange. (Big shoutout to Shawn and his Sculpting 101 Contour Guide.)

How to Look Less Intimidating Without Dimming Your Light — Inside Out Style

0

twitterpinterestlinkedinmail

The question came from Penny, but it’s one I hear time and time again:

“I struggle with intimidation and a nonapproachable effect. I’m tall, high contrast, and have a classic, dramatic look. Lately I’ve been dressing in muted tones and low contrast to seem more approachable – but it feels less like me.”

First, let me say this clearly:

You don’t have to shrink yourself—visually or energetically—to be approachable.

It’s a common story. Women with bold colouring, taller frames, or striking features often hear that they’re “too much.” And when they try to soften their style to make others more comfortable, they end up feeling invisible – or worse, disconnected from themselves.

But here’s the truth: There are other ways to create warmth and approachability in your appearance that don’t involve muting your natural strengths.

Why Muting Your Style Can Feel Like Muting Yourself

If you’re naturally high contrast – say, dark hair with light skin or bright eyes, then wearing low-contrast, muted colours can drain your energy, visually and emotionally. You feel less like yourself because, quite literally, your outer expression isn’t matching your inner design.

And while softer colours and lower contrast can create a sense of approachability (they’re considered yin elements in style), they’re just one piece of a much bigger style equation.

You don’t have to abandon what suits you just to seem more welcoming.

Yin and Yang: The Secret Language of Style

In the science of style, every design element carries energy. Some are more “yang” – bold, structured, commanding. Others are more “yin”—soft, flowing, approachable.

Many women assume that to appear less intimidating, they must shift to all yin: soft and light colours, unstructured shapes, and delicate prints. But this leads to a visual mismatch if your natural essence or colouring leans more yang.

Instead, you can balance your look by layering select yin elements into your existing style, without giving up your boldness, contrast, or drama.

Here’s How to Add Yin Without Losing Your Edge

If you’re working with a high-contrast, dramatic aesthetic, try incorporating these softer (yin) elements into your outfits:

1. Curved Lines
Straight, sharp lines feel more yang—assertive, structured, sometimes severe. Curved lines soften the effect. This could be as simple as choosing a round neckline over a sharp collar, or a softly draped wrap dress instead of a tailored sheath.

2. Lighter-Weight Fabrics
Swap stiff or heavy materials (like tweed or structured wool) for flowing, tactile options like silk, viscose, or lightweight knit. Even a dramatic silhouette feels more inviting in a fabric that moves with ease.

3. Soft Surface Textures
Texture speaks volumes. Velvet, cashmere, brushed cotton—these fabrics invite touch. They communicate warmth and gentleness, without requiring you to sacrifice your contrast or bold colour palette.

use soft textures to look less intimidating

4. Approachable Patterns
Geometric or angular prints tend to feel more yang. Consider incorporating florals, watercolour prints, or organic shapes if you want to signal openness while still maintaining visual interest.

patterns with curves are less intimidating than angular geometrics5. Value Stepping

If jumping straight from dark to light feels too stark, create a “ladder” of contrast. For example, instead of pairing pure black with white, go from black to charcoal to dove grey to cream. You’ll still have the contrast your features need, just in a way that feels more harmonious and less harsh.

Approachable ≠ Bland

Too often, I see smart, capable women dilute their style in an effort to blend in or avoid judgment. But dulling your presence won’t make you more lovable, it just makes you more challenging to see.

The key is to lead with self-honouring choices. If high contrast, structure, and dramatic elements are part of your visual identity, own them. Then, use yin-infused design choices to round out the edges—not to erase your impact.

If You’re Tired of Feeling Misunderstood…

Style is a powerful communicator. It’s not just about what you wear, it’s about how others read you before you say a word. But the goal isn’t to people-please through your clothing. The goal is to align how you feel with how you show up.

Approachability doesn’t require invisibility. It requires intentionality.

You can be magnetic and warm.
Bold and relatable.
Powerful and kind.

You get to choose style elements that express both your essence and your values, without sacrificing one for the other.

How To Get Rid of Neck Wrinkles

0

What comes to mind when you think of wrinkles? You might think of crow’s feet in your eye area or smile lines around your mouth. You might even frown lines on your forehead. Whatever you picture, you probably don’t immediately think of wrinkles on your neck.

Most skincare brands don’t pay attention to the skin below your jawline, but your neck deserves just as much care as the rest of your face. In fact, your décolleté (the part of your body that includes your neck and upper chest) is some of the most delicate skin you have.

Today, we’re going to give your neck and décolleté the attention it deserves. In this article, you’ll learn how to upgrade your skincare routine to achieve smooth skin and avoid neck wrinkles. Get ready for a soft, supple skin look from hairline to neckline.

Why Do You Get Neck Wrinkles?

Before you can learn how to get rid of neck wrinkles, you have to understand where they come from in the first place. Like the lines and creases that form on your face, neck wrinkles are the result of changes to the internal structure of your skin.

Your skin is made of three layers that protect your body:

  • The top layer is the epidermis. This layer is responsible for keeping dangerous pollutants and other threats from entering your body via your skin’s moisture barrier.
  • The middle layer is the dermis. It’s responsible for regulating fluid flow in the skin, including blood vessels, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands.
  • The bottom layer is the hypodermis. It’s responsible for storing fat and energy to insulate your body, maintain your core temperature, and cushion the muscles and bones beneath.

However, your dermis has a secondary role. In addition to supporting fluid flow throughout your body, it’s also responsible for maintaining the structure of your skin.

Think of your dermis as the internal foundation of your skin. It contains proteins like collagen and elastin that stretch from the hypodermis to the epidermis. These are the support beams. When these structural proteins are strong, your skin is supple and taut. However, if they fail, your skin can start to collapse in on itself.

Wrinkles are the result of this collapse. Your body naturally starts to produce less collagen and elastin as you age, which means the middle layer of your skin grows weaker and weaker as time goes on.

When this happens to the skin in your décolleté, you can develop neck wrinkles.

4 Common Causes of Neck Wrinkles

You know what’s happening beneath the surfaces that causes wrinkles and fine lines to form on your neck. But how does that translate into real-world reasons?

There are a number of circumstances that can cause collagen and elastin to deteriorate in the skin and lead to neck wrinkles. Let’s go through the four most common ones.

1. Natural Aging

We mentioned it already, but it’s worth saying again. The most common cause of neck wrinkles is the natural aging process.

Healthy and youthful skin contains up to 75% collagen. However, when you look at the amount of collagen in equally healthy but much more mature skin, this percentage can be cut in half. As structural proteins break down in the skin, your skin loses the integrity it needs to remain supple and flexible. In other words, it starts to sag and wrinkle.

2. Sun Exposure

There’s another type of aging that might be the cause of your neck wrinkles: photoaging.

Photoaging describes the long-term effect of sun damage on your skin. This damage can appear as dark spots (or age spots), uneven skin textures, and the onset of premature wrinkles.

When you forget to wear sunscreen on your neck or expose it to the elements over several seasons, UV radiation can start to break down the collagen and elastin in your skin, which begins the chain reaction, causing the wrinkles in your neck and décolleté.

3. Poor Posture

Another common cause of neck wrinkles is poor posture.

When you curve your shoulders and angle your head down, you create a bend in your neck that applies pressure on the skin and muscles beneath.

The repetitive motion of looking down for long hours at a time (ever heard of “tech neck” from looking at a screen?) can physically break collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, deteriorating the internal structure. This limp skin is what turns a temporary fold when looking down into long-lasting wrinkles.

4. Genetics

Besides natural aging, there’s one other factor that is by far the most common cause of neck wrinkles. That factor is genetics.

Wrinkles are, unfortunately, hereditary. In fact, 60% of signs of skin aging are caused by genetic factors.

Some people just naturally produce less collagen and elastin than others, and if your genes happen to make you one of them, that means your skin is more vulnerable to developing fine lines and wrinkles earlier in life.

How To Get Rid of Neck Wrinkles

Depending on what’s causing your neck wrinkles, you can get rid of them by stopping the wrinkle-inducing activity. (We’re looking at you, poor posture.) However, if your neck wrinkles are beyond your control, the best way to correct them is with the power of science.

That’s right. We’re talking about skincare.

Here at Juice Beauty, we take neck wrinkles seriously. That’s why we’ve designed a number of serums and creams specifically to treat the skin of your neck and décolleté. We’ve put two powerful ingredients to work to smooth away your neck wrinkles.

Stem Cells

The first ingredient we use to address the look of neck wrinkles is fruit stem cells.

Stem cells are a type of organic cell that has not yet grown into their final form. Normally, cells are specialized for a specific function in your body. For example, they might develop into a blood cell, which is different than a tissue cell or an immune cell.

However, stem cells are unspecialized, meaning they’re full of untapped potential. They can become any type of cell, making them masters at cellular repair in your body.

Our STEM CELLULAR® Peptide Lifting Neck Cream uses stem cells from fruits to repair damaged collagen and elastin fibers in the dermis layer and support a tighter, firmer skin look.

But don’t just take our word for it. Our Peptide Lifting Neck Cream showed significant visual improvement after just four weeks when tested in clinical studies. By strengthening the structure of your skin, stem cells can visibly smooth away fine lines and wrinkles in the neck area.

Signal Peptides

Another key ingredient we use to manage neck wrinkles is signal peptides.

Signal peptides are very short peptide chains that are used to send messages to and from different structures in your cells.

Unlike longer peptide chains that link up to form essential proteins and muscle tissues, signal peptides rarely leave their home cell — but that doesn’t make them less powerful.

In fact, the messages signal peptides send are what allow longer proteins to do their jobs. By supporting signal peptides, you support the function of the entire skin organ.

Our SIGNAL PEPTIDES™ skincare line uses these small but mighty peptide chains to strengthen skin and visibly firm your neck and décolleté. Signal Peptides Firming Serum restores firmness and skin elasticity, with 91% of clinical study participants reporting firmer skin and 97% reporting smoother skin.

Plus, Signal Peptides Firming Balm and Mask transforms dry, sagging skin into a hydrated, supple surface.

Support Your Skin for a Smooth, Wrinkle-Free Neck

Neck wrinkles are a common skin concern, but that doesn’t mean they have to be a lasting one. For smoother, more supple skin on your neck and décolleté, all you have to do is fuel your skin with the right ingredients.

Stem cells and signal peptides are some of the best ways to support the internal structure of your skin and stimulate collagen and elastin production to smooth away neck wrinkles. When you expand your skincare routine to include the delicate skin of your neck, you can achieve supple skin, from hairline to neckline.

Lush Let’s Get Ready To Crumble Gift Review

0

Birthdays are special, and what better way to celebrate than with a delightful, indulgent bath experience? Thanks to my husband, I spent my birthday unwinding with the ‘Let’s Get Ready to Crumble’ gift set from Lush. This set is a collection of four generously sized bubble bars, each offering a unique bathing experience.

Contents of The Gift Box

Sleepy Bubble Bar

This lavender-scented cloud of relaxation is perfect for unwinding. Infused with calming lavender oil, benzoin resinoid, and ylang-ylang oil, it’s like a soothing lullaby for the senses. As it dissolves, it transforms into ample bubbles creating a gorgeous dream-like foam, perfect for a tranquil pre-sleep bath.

The Comforter Bubble Bar

Lush Lets Get Ready to Crumble 3

A Lush classic of delightful concoction of bergamot and blackcurrant with creamy, gourmand base notes. This bar, the bar I chose for my birthday bath, turns into a fruity, creamy, pink-water haven. Its size is just right, eliminating the need to split it like the larger version. The aromatic blend of citrusy bergamot and sweet blackcurrant creates a comforting and indulgent experience.

Blue Skies And Fluffy White Clouds Bubble Bar

Lush Lets Get Ready to Crumble 4

Earthy and grounding, this bar is a contrast to The Comforter, pretty much its brother, with rich scents of patchouli and frankincense. It’s ideal for those who prefer a more masculine, woody fragrance in their bath, offering a deep and meditative experience.

Rainbow Bubble Bar

Lush Lets Get Ready to Crumble 6

Bright and cheerful, this citrus-infused bar brings a playful energy to your bath. The combination of Sicilian lemon oil, lemon myrtle oil, and benzoin resinoid creates a zesty and uplifting bath. Its vivid colours add to the big-bubbled fun, making bath time visually and aromatically silly and happy.

Ethical Packaging

Lush’s commitment to sustainability, as always, is evident in the packaging. The ‘Let’s Get Ready to Crumble’ box is made from 100% recycled board, printed and made in the UK, and is completely reusable or recyclable. Inside are eco-friendly starch puffs that we have to stop the cat eating (she goes nuts for them!).

Fabulous Birthday Treat

Receiving this set on my birthday was a real treat. The size of the bars is surprisingly large, considering Lush describes them as mini. Each bar promises at least one luxurious bath, making the set great value for money at £20. The packaging also evokes a touch of nostalgia with its 90’s bowling alley carpet patterns, adding to the overall charm. ‘Let’s Get Ready to Crumble’ is simply great fun.

Conclusion

Overall, ‘Let’s Get Ready to Crumble’ from Lush is a delightful collection that offers variety, quality, and ethical packaging at a reasonable price. It’s perfect for anyone looking to indulge in some self-care or for a thoughtful, fun gift.

Each bubble bar in this set not only promises a joyful and relaxing bath experience but also aligns with a conscious choice for the environment. It’s a gift that truly keeps on giving – in more ways than one.

The Non-Rhode Makeup Hailey Bieber Wore On Her Birthday

0

Few people can spark a frenzy like Hailey Bieber. The model, influencer, mogul and mom recently celebrated her 29th birthday in style—but for beauty fans, Bieber’s makeup tutorials are the real celebration. Her TikTok is packed with GRWMs that show off both her skill and her enviable product lineup, and her latest birthday video is no exception.

Part of the charm is her casual approach. She’s not holding every product up to the camera, but she is showing exactly how she uses them to create the look. The result is a video that feels relaxed and natural, much like her style, and has people running to the comments to break down the products she actually used. This time, we’ve done the work for you. Of course, there are lots of Rhode items, but the others may surprise you.

If there’s one thing to know about Bieber’s makeup routine, it’s that skin care always comes first. Like most of her tutorials, she starts this one with Rhode’s Glazing Milk ($32) and a layer of the brand’s Barrier Butter ($36). The pairing is an essential part of her signature makeup looks, as it primes the skin beforehand. After smoothing out the cream, she begins applying her makeup, adding contour shades, concealer, blush and finishing with a handful of lip products. And while it’s no surprise that Rhode’s makeup makes an appearance, the other products she reaches for are what really stand out.

The first is Kosas’ Revealer Color Corrector ($32), which she taps into the inner and outer corners of her eyes to brighten the area. She doesn’t list the exact shade, but the creamy dots look a lot like Magic, a soft pink ideal for counteracting discoloration. She sets everything with Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Powder ($49) before moving on to blush. And then there’s the lips. Bieber’s lip looks are always soft, full and effortless. In this tutorial, she uses a mix of favorites, including Mary Phillips’ m.p.h Lip Pencil ($25), and finishes with Violette_FR’s Bisou Balm ($29).

See the non-Rhode staples in her routine, ahead.

The Best Brain-Boosting Workout for Women—and How to Fit It Into Your Routine

0

Zone 2 cardio workouts have gotten a lot of love lately. The second least-intense type of cardio on a scale of 1 to 5, zone 2 involves raising your heart rate only a bit—to 60% or 70% of your max. It puts little stress on the body and therefore doesn’t trigger the kind of cortisol spike (albeit, a temporary one) that more intense workouts can bring. Hence why a lot of women, particularly those in midlife, tend to hang out in this zone, Louisa Nicola, MMed, a New York–based neurophysiologist who studies Alzheimer’s disease in women, tells SELF. But there’s real value in bumping up the effort to zone 5 (or 90% of your max heart rate) every so often, particularly for your brain health, she says.

To be sure, doing any form of movement offers some brain-boosting benefits: It can help stem inflammation, shuttle more blood (and therefore, more oxygen and nutrients) to your brain, and even pump out proteins that support the growth of new brain cells or strengthen their connections. With zone 5 cardio, though, you can magnify several of these effects and channel others that may come only with that extra burst of intensity.

For instance, a 2024 study of older adults suggests brief bouts of zone 5 cardio interspersed with recovery periods can trigger better performance on memory tests and less age-related shrinkage of the brain’s memory center, as compared to low- or medium-intensity exercise. And a 2020 study found that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) (not moderate-intensity continuous training or resistance training) improved older adults’ cognitive flexibility, or ability to quickly switch between mental tasks. Keep reading to learn why incorporating zone 5 cardio in your workout routine may help keep your brain sharp, and how Nicola suggests everyone—particularly women in midlife—do just that.

Why high-intensity cardio especially supports brain health

Jamming out quick bursts of high-key cardio increases your VO₂ max, or the max rate at which your body can use oxygen during exercise; a higher level reflects greater cardiorespiratory fitness. This, coupled with the “sheer shunting of blood to the brain during high-intensity training can benefit brain health,” Nicola says, “as the brain is a highly vascular organ and needs a constant supply of blood flow to function at its peak.” Hence why studies have linked greater cardiorespiratory fitness and higher VO₂ max to better working memory, decision-making, and processing speed, as well as lower risk of dementia.

That’s an especially relevant finding for perimenopausal women, Nicola says. The related drop in estrogen can lead to dips in muscle mass and fitness; if you don’t mitigate these shifts by keeping on top of physical activity, including high-effort cardio, you could then put your brain at greater risk of decline too, she explains.
