8 Ways To Help Prevent Wrinkles

0

Let’s face it: we all want to keep our skin looking fresh and youthful. With so much information out there, it can be overwhelming to figure out what actually works.

From proactive wrinkle prevention methods to a skincare routine that can help remedy the look of existing fine lines and wrinkles, this article will cover it all.

What Are Wrinkles?

Wrinkles are affected by various factors that affect our skin’s structure and appearance.

Over time, your skin naturally loses some of its bounce, smoothness, and even elasticity, which can contribute to fine lines, creases, and wrinkles popping up on your face. You might notice wrinkles on your forehead, around your eyes, and around your mouth primarily, as these are the areas that move the most during facial expressions.

How Does Our Skin Age?

During the aging process, our skin undergoes many changes that all work together to contribute to the formation of wrinkles, including:

  1. Collagen and Elastin Breakdown: These proteins, responsible for skin’s firmness and elasticity, decrease with age. Collagen production slows down, and existing collagen fibers become weaker.

  2. Slower Cell Turnover: Our skin’s ability to shed dead skin cells and generate new ones slows down, leading to a duller complexion and more pronounced fine lines.

  3. Reduced Oil Production: This leads to drier skin, which is more prone to wrinkles and fine lines.

  4. Environmental Factors: Sun exposure, pollution, and lifestyle choices accelerate skin aging. Free radicals from these sources can damage skin cells and break down collagen and elastin.

  5. Loss of Subcutaneous Fat: The layer of fat beneath our skin thins with age, leading to sagging and a more prominent appearance of wrinkles.

What Is the Role of Genetics in Wrinkles?

While we can’t change our genetic makeup, it’s important to understand its role in skin aging. Some people are genetically predisposed to develop wrinkles earlier or more prominently.

Factors that are influenced by genetics include:

  • Skin type (oily, dry, or combination)
  • Skin tone and pigmentation
  • Natural levels of collagen and elastin production
  • Predisposition to certain skin conditions like eczema or rosacea

However, genetics is just one piece of the puzzle. Environmental factors and lifestyle choices play a significant role in how our skin ages, which means we have more say in what happens to our skin than you might initially think.

8 Proven Strategies To Keep Your Skin Youthful

You are the master of your own destiny when it comes to skin health. Many of the factors that contribute to skin aging can be easily controlled and managed — it just takes a little know-how and a little effort.

Here are some of our top tips to keep your skin looking young and fresh.

1. Sun Protection: Your Skin’s Best Friend

Sun damage is the leading cause of premature skin aging. Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is the best way to prevent wrinkles before they form.

The American Academy of Dermatology emphasizes the importance of sun protection in maintaining skin health and preventing skin cancer.

Here’s how to do it effectively:

  • Wear Sunscreen Daily: Choose a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Juice Beauty’s SPF 30 Matte Oil-Free Moisturizer is a great option that provides protection without clogging pores.
  • Stay in the Shade: When possible, seek out shady spots to sit or walk, especially during the brightest daylight hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear Protective Clothing: Hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts can provide added protection that picks up where sunscreen leaves off.
  • Don’t Forget Oft-Missed Areas: Double check your ears, the back of your neck, and your hands. We all know that our hands are often one of the first places to show our age.

2. Hydration Inside and Out

Proper hydration is necessary for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing fine lines. Well-hydrated skin remains plumper and more resilient, making wrinkles less noticeable.

Here are some ways to make sure your skin stays hydrated:

  • Drink Plenty of Water: Make good old-fashioned H2O a priority for your overall health — but also to keep your skin supple and soft. Aim for at least eight glasses a day.
  • Use a Hydrating Moisturizer: Look for products with hyaluronic acid, like Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer, which helps lock in moisture and plump the skin. In a study, 100% of users showed an instrument-measured increase in skin hydration.
  • Consider Investing in a Humidifier: This can add moisture to the air, which is especially welcome in dry climates or in the winter months.
  • Avoid Hot Showers: Hot water can strip your skin of natural oils. Opt for warm or lukewarm water instead.
  • Apply Moisturizer to Damp Skin: Putting moisturizer on right after a bath or shower helps to lock in hydration.

3. Nourish Your Skin With a Healthy Diet

What you eat reflects on your skin. A diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals can help combat free radicals and support skin health.

Include these in your diet:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish, flaxseed, and walnuts, these healthy fats support skin structure and reduce inflammation.
  • Vitamin C: Choose citrus fruits, berries, and leafy greens. Vitamin C helps with collagen production and acts as an antioxidant.
  • Vitamin E: Present in nuts, seeds, and avocados. It protects skin cells from oxidative stress.
  • Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Dark chocolate, green tea, and colorful vegetables contain antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals that can damage skin.
  • Protein: Include lean meats, fish, legumes, and tofu in your diet to aid in the production of collagen and elastin.
  • Zinc: Found in oysters, pumpkin seeds, and lentils, zinc can aid in skin healing and renewal.

4. The Power of Retinoids

Retinoids, derived from vitamin A, are proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. They work by supporting cell turnover and collagen production, two factors that are key when it comes to maintaining a youthful-looking complexion.

Some of the key benefits of retinoids include:

  • Support for collagen production
  • Support for cell turnover
  • Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved appearance of skin texture and tone

When using retinoids, start slowly and gradually increase usage to avoid irritation, as retinoids can be a bit harsh.

Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Booster Serum contains a plant-derived retinol alternative that offers similar benefits without the harsh side effects often associated with traditional retinoids. 95% of users reported a younger and smoother looking appearance after four weeks.

5. Embrace a Gentle Skincare Routine

A consistent, gentle skincare routine can work wonders for your skin. Here’s a basic routine to follow:

  1. Cleanse: Use a gentle cleanser like Juice Beauty’s Prebiotix Cleansing Cream. This will remove dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
  2. Tone: This optional step can help balance your skin’s pH and prep the skin for subsequent products.
  3. Treat: Apply serums or other treatments to the skin, targeting specific skin concerns.
  4. Moisturize: Lock in hydration with a moisturizer that’s suitable for your skin type. We love our Green Apple Age Defy Moisturizer, which is great for most skin types.
  5. Protect: If your moisturizer doesn’t have at least SPF 30, make it a priority to slather on the sunscreen as the final step in your skincare routine.

6. Say Goodbye to Harmful Habits

We are not here to judge, but certain lifestyle habits can accelerate skin aging.

Consider eliminating or reducing:

  • Smoking: It reduces blood flow to the skin and damages collagen and elastin.
  • Excessive Alcohol Consumption: It dehydrates the skin and can cause inflammation. Alcohol can also interfere with your sleep quality, which is crucial for skin health.
  • Poor Sleep Habits: Speaking of sleep, a lack of sleep can increase stress hormones, leading to skin damage. Aim for 7-9 hours a night.
  • Squinting or Repetitive Facial Expressions: These can lead to expression lines over time. If you find yourself squinting often, it might be time to get your vision checked.
  • Neglecting Fitness: Regular physical activity improves circulation, which can help nourish skin cells and keep them vital.

7. Beauty Sleep

Quality sleep is crucial for skin health. During sleep, your body repairs and regenerates skin cells. Growth hormone levels increase during deep sleep, which helps with cell and tissue repair.

To maximize your sleep hygiene:

  • Get seven to nine hours of sleep per night
  • Sleep on your back (if you can) to avoid sleep lines on your face
  • Use a satin pillowcase to reduce friction between the pillow and your skin
  • Apply a night cream like Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Overnight Cream before bed to support skin rejuvenation. 91% of users reported waking up with improved skin moisture replenishment overnight.
  • Keep your bedroom cool and dark to promote better sleep quality.

8. Stress Management for Radiant Skin

Chronic stress can accelerate skin aging by increasing inflammation and free radical production. Incorporate stress-reduction techniques into your daily routine:

  • Practice mindfulness or meditation
  • Exercise regularly
  • Do hobbies that you enjoy
  • Spend time in nature
  • Practice deep breathing exercises
  • Maintain social connections and seek support when needed

When To Consult a Dermatologist

While a good skincare routine can go a long way in preventing and treating wrinkles, you may want to see a dermatologist if:

  • You’re interested in professional treatments like chemical peels or Botox
  • Over-the-counter products aren’t yielding desired results
  • You have persistent skincare issues or concerns
  • You notice changes in moles or skin texture
  • You have a family history of skin cancer

A dermatologist can provide personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific skincare needs and goals.

The Bottom Line

Preventing wrinkles is about more than just applying creams — it’s a holistic approach that involves protecting your skin, nourishing it from the inside out, and making lifestyle choices that support overall skin health.

By incorporating these eight strategies into your daily routine and using high-quality, organic skincare products like those offered by Juice Beauty, you can keep your skin looking young and radiant for years to come.

Whose Hair Is More ’90s: Gwyneth Paltrow or Apple Martin?

0

A lot of ink has been spilled about how Apple Martin21, is her mom Gwyneth Paltrow’s mini me. The two have the same buttery blonde hair and simple, elegant style, and it does seem like Martin is taking a few cues from her mom’s now-legendary ‘90s style—and it’s not just limited to her closet. Hairstyles are fair game too, as evidenced by their recent red carpet appearance!

For the New York City premiere of Paltrow’s new movie Marty Supreme, both mother and daughter took a ‘90s-esque approach to their hair, pairing their sleek black dresses with two very different takes on a red carpet updo. Let’s start with GP, shall we? The Oscar winner’s hair was styled by Owen Gould, who prepped her clean, damp hair with Nulastin’s NuProtect Leave-In Primer, then blew it dry with a large round brush, softly curling the ends under to frame her face. Once the hair was fully dry, Gould gathered the lengths loosely at the nape of Paltrow’s neck and loosely braided it, then left “about three inches” loose and fastened the braid with a long black velvet ribbon. From the front, it looks like she’s wearing a loose, low ponytail, one Paltrow might’ve worn with a Calvin Klein slipdress and mules on a red carpet circa 1996.

4 Signs to Consider Family Therapy, According to Experts

0

Even the closest of families can be a little dysfunctional—and if you’ve ever been in therapy, you’ve probably complained about yours during a one-on-one session. But what if you could hash out your issues as a group—with your parents, siblings, in-laws, kids, whoever—all in the same room?

That’s essentially what family therapy, or bringing everyone into the same session, is about. “The goal is to shift the entire system—not just one person’s behavior,” Dorin Roth, PsyD, a psychologist who works with couples and families at Therapists of New York, tells SELF. In practice, family therapy involves having a neutral third party observe how everyone interacts in order to reduce misunderstandings, conflicts, and ideally, your stress. “We’re not focusing on fixing someone but rather reshaping the relationship as a whole,” Dr. Roth says.

So how do you know if it’s time for a professional intervention? Here are a few signs.

1. You’re having the same fight, over and over.

No matter how many times you think you’ve resolved it, the exact same argument keeps resurfacing—whether it’s about finances, your romantic relationship, or drama from years ago. If solving it on your own hasn’t worked, then having a licensed expert guide the conversation may make it easier for everyone to see the problem from a new perspective.

“When we tell someone what’s happening, it’s only our version of the story,” Erin Runt, LMFT, a Chicago-based licensed therapist, tells SELF. “We’re always like, ‘Well, this is what I did, but it’s because the other person is just being this way!” However, family therapy provides a more neutral space where all parties can share their experience and feel supported while doing so.

2. You feel misunderstood every time you try communicating.

When no one is truly hearing each other, it’s easy for tension to rise—and for conversations to become counterproductive. And that’s where sitting down together (with a moderator in the room) can help.

Even if you’ve mastered healthy communication skills (like using “I” statements to get your points across), Dr. Roth says there’s still no guarantee that your parent, sibling, or other family member will interpret your message as intended. A therapist can observe how you’re talking to each other in real time and step in the moment someone interrupts, becomes defensive, or makes assumptions—patterns that can be difficult to recognize or change without an unbiased party present.

3. You need help navigating a major life transition.

Whether it’s a divorce, the death of a loved one, or a major cross-country move, life changes that impact the entire household can be difficult to navigate. “When families are struggling to work through those events, then that can be a great opportunity to consider therapy,” Runt says. Beyond helping everyone develop coping strategies, it’s also a chance to support each other and build a sense of togetherness during tough times.

4. You experience pushback after setting boundaries.

Setting boundaries—or even just asking for a little space—is easier said than done, especially if your family doesn’t respect them. Maybe they dismiss your needs as “dramatic,” or guilt-trip you for refusing to come home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Origins & Benefits of the Skincare Makeup System

0

Skin. Our largest organ, and if studies are to be believed, also one of the things we notice first about each other. According to research, while we were still living in caves, we needed signs to pick healthy mates so we could bring healthy children into the world. Good skin was an important signal. Nothing much has changed!

So how does healthy skin look? Clear and moist with a matte shimmer would be my description. I asked my husband to come up with his own and all he could say was “moist.” (Glad he didn’t say anything about wrinkles!) Fortunately for us, unlike our prehistoric ancestors, we don’t have to be born with clear, moist skin with a matte shimmer, we can create it using makeup with skincare benefits. And that was how the jane iredale Skincare Makeup System was born.

What Is the Skincare Makeup System? The Origins of the Perfect Trio

skincare makeup

PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation

It didn’t happen all at once. The first product I put on women’s faces in medical offices, spas, trade shows and everything in between was PurePressed Base, our now iconic mineral powder — a foundation, powder, concealer and sunscreen all in one. I used to counsel women to put on a moisturizer first, so the minerals would adhere to the skin better and give more even coverage. I was often asked if we had a moisturizer. More on that later.

I was still learning about the potential and benefits of PurePressed Base that was formulated without fillers and synthetics, and so I paid careful attention to how the skin looked at all stages of wearing. Because the minerals were concentrated pigment, it didn’t take much to achieve the look of clear skin. Brush them on and the skin was flawless. It still looked like skin no matter how much was applied. Also, because of the shape and overlapping nature of the mineral particles, they transferred far less than normal makeup and stayed on the skin longer. I had a dramatic example of this when I visited a Soap Opera set that was using our makeup for the actors. The makeup artists were sitting with their feet up in the control room, happily relaxed because they weren’t darting out onto the set to touch-up makeup every few minutes. They literally applauded when I walked in.

Pommisst Hydration Spray

What I also noticed about the minerals was that after a while, they would set themselves. What I mean is that as they mixed with the skin’s natural moisture, they looked better and better. No sign of a powdery look and more and more like flawless skin. While I was doing my applications, I wanted to show women that look without their having to wait for it to happen naturally. That’s when the hydration sprays were born. A quick spritz over the minerals set them perfectly as well as giving the skin that coveted “moist” look. I noticed that the spray also brought a smile to the woman’s face. A beautiful fragrance will do that, such as pomegranate. From the moment we brought out our first bottle of Pommisst Hydration Spray, it has never ceased to be one of our top sellers.

Smooth Affair Brightening Face Primer

So now we have PurePressed Base and Pommisst, what about the moisturizer? Moisturizers are a bit like mascaras. Every woman has different needs and a different point of view. This is definitely not a one-size-fits-all product. So perhaps the best thing was to develop a product that was a primer. A bit like our Lash Conditioner that primes lashes before the mascara of your choice is applied. A primer that could be worn with or without a moisturizer under it.

Of course, it had to be beneficial for the skin and allow it to breathe and function normally. It also had to feel light, not sticky, prevent moisture loss, and provide a smooth surface on which the minerals could adhere. This was a formulating challenge but one we solved with Smooth Affair Brightening Face Primer. I love this product. I love the way it feels, the way it smells, and the fact that I can wear it by itself and often do. It has a calming effect on the skin that never fails to work for me.

So, now we have our Skincare Makeup System, and what a powerful trio they have been. They have introduced millions of women all over the world to the joys of a clear, moist skin with that youthful matte shimmer. Our ancestors would be proud.

5 Ways To Healthier Skin – Vegan Beauty Review | Vegan and Cruelty-Free Beauty, Fashion, Food, and Lifestyle : Vegan Beauty Review

If you want to look better and feel better, you might want to consider some of the ways in which you can approach this. The truth is that there are all sorts of things you can do and approaches you can take, and it’s always going to be possible to make this a reality in some way or another. In this post, we are going to take a look at a few of the main ways you might want to work on your skincare.

Pic Credit – CCO License

If you are paying attention to at least a couple of the following points, you should find that you are much more likely to have healthier skin, and that you can then enjoy all of the benefits that this will bring you. So let’s take a look and see what you might want to consider on that front.

Simplify Your Routine

A lot of people make things too difficult for themselves when it comes to their skincareand the result is that they are much more likely to end up with skin which is not where they want it to be. You don’t actually need a 10-step routine. All you need is to stick to the basics: a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser that suits your skin type, and sunscreen during the day. This is going to be pretty much all you need to think about, and you’ll find that you are then going to be able to keep it all together much more easily. It will also mean that you are not overwhelmed by the thought of looking after your skin.

Hydrate All The Way Through

You are probably already well aware that hydration is important, but the way in which you do it matters too. In particular, you should aim to hydrate your body all the way through, inside and out. If you are able to do that, you should find that you are much more likely to really notice the difference, and that you are going to feel and look so much better on the whole. Drink water regularly, as your skin needs it just like the rest of your body. But also make sure that you are moisturising every day. If you can do both of these things, that is really going to help you out a great deal. You might also find that using some hydrafacial services can be really helpful in this too.

Protect Against the Sun

This is another element to skincare that you must make sure you are thinking about. You really can’t afford to overlook this at all, in fact. You need to make sure that you are protecting against the sun at all times – even on cloudy days the UV can penetrate through and cause your skin damage. If you are protecting yourself against the sun, you are going to find that you are much more likely to have strong and healthy skin, so this is a really important thing to remember. Use a high SPF lotion and make sure you are covering up too, especially on those warmer days.

Get Plenty Of Sleep

This is another element that a lot of people forget to prioritize, and yet it’s something that is really going to make a world of difference to how you feel in your skin and to how healthy your skin is. If you want to make sure that you are going to have better skin, you should absolutely focus on getting plenty of sleep. There are numerous ways in which you can do that, from ensuring that you are going to bed earlier to reducing your caffeine intake, especially in the afternoons. But whatever you do, just make sure that you are getting enough sleep all in all. It really is going to help your skin to repair itself day after day.

Be Careful What You Eat

And finally, you should aim to take care with what you eat if you want to have healthier skin too. The fact is that eating healthily is very closely tied up with having good skin, and you might be surprised at just how true this can really be. Make sure you are eating plenty of nutrients and that you are doing all you can to really keep your diet as clean as possible, which means focusing on whole foods and avoiding processed and junk foods. This is going to make a huge difference to your skin for sure.

7 Best Face Washes for Sensitive Skin That Are Gentle Yet Effective

Elizabeth Geddes-Bruce, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, based in Austin, Texas, also recommends this cleanser for sensitive skin types: “You get a gigantic stock for a reasonable price and can be confident that it will never irritate your skin,” she says. Further proof that it’s worth a buy? It’s won three Best of Beauty Awards and three Readers’ Choice Awards over the years.

When I had an unfortunate incident with retinol (sensitivity, redness, burning), the Gentle Skin Cleanser was the only face wash I could tolerate. It actually felt soothing to coat my skin in the lotion-y formula.” —Lexi Novak, Allure tester

Best for Acne-Prone Skin: Ourself Daily Purifying Cleanser

Ourself

Daily Purifying Cleanser

Why it’s worth it: Ourself’s Daily Purifying Cleanser is equal parts cleanser and moisturizer, which is exactly what skin needs to steer clear of blemishes, dryness, and irritation alike. This gel-to-foam face wash’s multitasking formula swaps harsh surfactants for a gentle cleansing agent derived from coconut fatty acids to gently wash away sweat, oil, and excess sebum. Meanwhile, a conditioning blend of murmuru butter, niacinamide, and saccharide isomerate (a moisturizing compound derived from sugar) leaves skin feeling soft and supple post-rinse. “This gentle daily cleanser uses a blend of hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients to effectively remove impurities without stripping the skin—ideal for sensitive, reactive, or dryness-prone skin,” adds Anna Karp, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City.

“My skin is frequently red and sensitive, but as of lately, I’ve been breaking out more than I ever have in my life. Thankfully, this intensive formula has helped minimize both blackheads and painful cystic acne alike, all without stripping my skin. I call it my Goldilocks formula: it’s not too drying, but not so mild that it’s useless for cleansing. ” Jennifer Hussein, Allure contributing writer

  • Key ingredients: cocamidopropyl betaine (coconut fatty acid-derived surfactant), murmuru butter, saccharide isomerate, niacinamide, beet root extract

Best for Redness: Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser

Dermalogica

Ultracalming Cleanser

Why it’s worth it: Geeta Yadav, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Toronto, Ontario, is a big fan of anything that contains oat and cucumber—and the Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser fits the bill. “These are gentle, soothing ingredients that comfort the skin, restore moisture, and reduce inflammation,” says Dr. Yadav. In addition, this gel cleanser also contains calming lavender extract to reduce redness and is free from quite a few potentially troublesome irritants like alcohol, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, and preservatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is sensitive skin, and how do I know if I have it?

“Sensitive skin is skin that is more reactive than usual,” Illinois board-certified dermatologist Jessie Cheung, MD, previously told Allure. This means your skin can be easily irritated by the elements, air pollution, hormones, or, you guessed it, topical skin care products. “If [you find yourself being] cautious with trying new skin products or find that you’re frequently battling red, flaky, itchy, or bumpy skin, then you probably have sensitive skin,” Dr. Cheung, adds. Because “sensitive skin” isn’t a medical condition but rather a complaint or finding, it can be tricky to know whether you have it. Ask your dermatologist for tailored skin care advice if you suspect you might.

Which facial cleanser ingredients are best for sensitive skin types?

Regarding ingredients, sensitive skin types need to be particularly discerning. Overall, Morgan Rabach, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, suggests seeking hydrating, soothing, and moisture-sealing ingredients, such as tried-and-true hyaluronic acid, oatmeal, and aloe vera. “Instead of strong, soapy, clean cleansers, look for mild cleansers using emulsifiers,” she says. Dr. Rabach also suggests using a pH-balanced cleanser, which is closer to the natural skin pH of around 5 to 5.5.

What should I avoid if I have sensitive skin?

Amy B. Lewis, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, previously told Allure that people with sensitive skin should avoid sulfates, exfoliants, retinoids, isopropyl alcohol, glycolic, and salicylic acids—to name a few. “Some patients think they’re sensitive because they’re red and dry, but really they’re vaping, or smoking cigarettes or weed—so their skin isn’t as resilient as it used to be,” adds Jeanine Downie, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Montclair, New Jersey. If smoking or sun damage (don’t forget your sunscreen, please) is behind your sensitive skin, topicals aren’t going to fix or help your skin concerns.

Sensitive skin isn’t a one-size-fits-all concern, so you may find your triggers inconsistent with conventional wisdom. Therefore, pay close attention to your skin after using any new products and talk to your dermatologist for more information.

How should I choose a face wash for sensitive skin?

“You want to use gentle, hydrating cleansers that remove impurities without stripping the skin barrier of all its natural moisturizing factors,” explains Washington, D.C.-based dermatologist Adam Friedman, MD. Before you wash your face, seek out products with as short an ingredient list as possible, adds Dr. Irwin. “For sensitive skin, specifically, you want products that are free of artificial fragrances, parabens, and phthalates.”

How often should sensitive skin types cleanse?

Even if you have sensitive skin, cleansing morning and night is essential for keeping your pores clean—just make sure the face wash you use is gentle enough for your sensitive skin. That being said, Dr. Karp recommends that severely reactive skin types cleanse with a gentle cleanser at night and simply rinse with lukewarm water in the morning.

What else can I do to minimize sensitivity?

Your cleansing regimen is a key element for minimizing sensitivity. Both Dr. Karp and Dr. Rabach recommend washing with lukewarm water in order to minimize irritation, but there are added steps you can take to create a gentle routine that still provides a deep cleanse. “Only cleanse for half a minute, avoid cloths and textured sponges and exfoliating brushes,” says Dr. Rabach. Then, beyond cleansing, Dr. Karp suggests keeping your skin-care routine short and sweet, using only a moisturizer and sunscreen during daylight hours.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best face washes for sensitive skin, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients, efficacy, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the “best” for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Am I a Masochist for Going Back to Workouts I Hate?

0

I tried Solidcore—a high-intensity workout class on a Pilates-inspired reformer—for the first time in 2023. I spent all 50 minutes cursing under my breath, convinced that my muscles were ripping apart. (They were, in fact, not.) I hated it. And yet after it ended, I immediately booked my next class.

A quick scroll through Instagram and TikTok proves I’m not the only one addicted to the grueling workout. Every December, Solidcore hosts the “Solidays Challenge,” in which members commit to taking 10 classes over 15 days; in return, they get an exclusive mockneck sweatshirt along with products from Salt & Stone. This year nearly one third of members opted in, Athletech News reported, a 65% increase from 2024. Over the past five years, Google searches for Solidcore have steadily risen—and are currently at their highest of all time. Yet even amidst its widespread popularity, devotees of the cult workout still complain about the pain of the class. “It’s so hard that it’s borderline uncomfortable—but in the best way,” notes one TikTok user.

Solidcore isn’t the only rigorous workout gaining traction. In its 2025 report, ClassPass noted that searches for Hyrox classes increased 432% year over year. Hyrox, a global fitness competition that combines running and resistance training, was previously referred to by one expert as “the marathon of functional fitness.” (So in other words: Not for the faint of heart.) Another indication of the rising popularity of high-intensity workouts: Barry’s, the bootcamp-style class, reportedly plans to open 20 new studios worldwide in the next few years, according to CoStar, an outlet covering commercial real estate.

Why are these seemingly masochistic workouts on the rise? And why do so many of us—myself included—keep going back?

Rationally, I know that research indicates that exercise doesn’t have to be the most strenuous in order to benefit my overall well-being. But I put myself through it anyway—the choice to return to these high-intensity classes goes beyond simply wanting to get fit and live a healthy lifestyle. Ellin Gurvitch, LMHC, a licensed mental health counselor and performance coach, says while social media trends can encourage us to do a particular workout or class, they’re not the only thing driving us to the studio or gym. “That feeling of what you’re getting after [your workout] is so powerful,” she says. Doing hard things, whether a two-minute plank or 20 burpees, ultimately leads to a boost in self-satisfaction, self-respect, and self-confidence in the minutes, hours, and days following your workout, she adds. Perhaps, in some instances, pain is gain.
