Is the Backlash to Facial Conformity Finally Upon Us?

0

I wonder if we’ve been in the process of losing the face’s primary function. And whether we’re finally starting to see a real backlash to the prevalence of conformity. There is certainly a roster of celebrities refusing to succumb to extreme facial work—and I might argue this is a result of more of us recognizing the threat to our social harmony and community. As one astute editor at this magazine asks, “going into 2026, maybe it’s not an anomaly to see a woman over 40—or 70—looking her age onscreen?” Stars like Keri Russell and Claire Danes on the younger end; Olivia Coleman, Parker Posey, and Robin Wright in the mid-range; more mature luminaries Kathy Bates, Helen Mirren, Catherine O’Hara, and Jean Smart—none of them have taken the Kris Jenner route. That feels like more than just a handful of resistance.

To get back to the basic question: What’s a face for? Starting with the completely obvious, a face is what enables your friend to pick you out of a crowd (recognition). If you’re a toddler lost in a department store, it allows you to realize with desperate surprise that the adult hand you just grabbed does not belong to the face you trust (bonding resulting from facial attunement). In which case, your face will communicate unequivocally to that strange adult that you are not comfortable with their unfamiliar companionship (communication of emotions). All of which suggests that the human face has evolved to be read. Our physiognomy, including individual asymmetries, our expressions (macro and micro), the qualities of our complexion, all encode valuable information about age, our mental and physical health, our lived experience and personality. What happens when these cues are greatly diminished or erased either by plastic surgery or other aesthetic interventions?

What happens is—among other things I’ll get to in a minute—confusion. Because facial expressions create a feedback loop between people. When expressions are reduced or largely eradicated, communication is distorted. (Watch this video of Botoxed women trying to look angry.) But expressions also initiate emotional feedback with yourself. Smiling can actually lift your mood, while frowning can lower it. This, I now realize, might be why in my 70s I’m suddenly considering my first surgical intervention to modify the unwelcome changes I’ve noticed around my mouth—intensifying my resting bitch face, and so sending distorted feedback about my persistently sunny outlook.

In fact, the face is so important to our social fabric that there’s an area of the brain—called the fusiform face area—devoted exclusively to decoding it. Damage the cerebral geography here, and you can’t even read the map, losing altogether the ability to recognize faces (prosopagnosia). But here’s what might be the most revealing detail about how your brain reads a face. It’s not by examining it at rest. The brain interprets patterns of movement: tension at the corners of the mouth, a slight widening of the eyes, a lift of the eyebrow. When facial movement looks unusual or inconsistent to what we expect—no matter how “perfect” the face—it makes us feel uncomfortable because the signals we’re getting are degraded and unreadable. Which is when we might begin to feel we’re looking at a person whose primary residence is deep in the Uncanny Valley.

As the options for facial fiddling have become more accessible, the face is increasingly regarded as an image to be perfected. But aesthetic treatments that sharpen the contours of the face—snatching the jaw, inflating the lips—to give them more contrast in photos, can reduce and distort expression. Aesthetic interventions that reduce wrinkles and facial asymmetries like crows’-feet diminish the cues that can signal warmth, wisdom, and happiness, the very things we rely on a face to communicate. There’s even a procedure now designed to diminish or resolve that adorable little pocket some people get just beneath their eyes when they smile. Neurotoxin is injected to relax the muscles under the eyes, reducing the bulging “jelly roll.” I have just one question about this procedure: Why?

If there’s a trend toward aesthetic procedures that yield more natural-looking results—a prediction that seems to be floating to the top of the 2026 prediction pile—that might make it easier to go even farther than that: rejecting the idea that any aesthetic intervention is inevitable as we age.

After all, similar to how Jessie Buckley uses her face as an artistic instrument, we use ours (often unconsciously) as a social instrument. A face identifies us as a person alive and with presence; a face is irreducibly unique, and yet through it we can trace the bones and beauty of our ancestors. As we age, a face can serve as a lovely, richly imbued representation of past harmonies and discordance—essentially, in the end, a coda to a well-lived life.

The Case for Ditching ‘Hard’ Workouts and Playing Instead

0

Remember when you were a kid and you couldn’t wait until it was time for recess? You’d participate in soccer, kickball, hopscotch, and play on the swings until your teachers forced you back inside the classroom. Movement didn’t feel like a chore—it felt like freedom, and most importantly, it felt fun. That’s the shift fitness is taking, and honestly, it’s probably for the better.

The days of forcing yourself to do grueling, high-intensity workouts that you actually hate are over. Research shows that the secret to a consistent workout routine has always been to genuinely enjoy it, and this year, we’re injecting more play into movement.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that exercise is something you power through. Hard work is required and fun is optional. But that mindset doesn’t exactly set you up for success—especially when life is already stressful. That’s part of why playful movement is having such a moment. Unconventional ways to exercise are growing in popularity like aerial yoga, indoor climbing, pickleball, pole dancing, puppy yoga, and trampoline workouts. They’re the kind of activities you don’t have to psych yourself up for.

There are real benefits to tapping into that kid-like energy we once had. “Playful exercise helps people reconnect with movement in a way that feels fun and low-pressure—especially for adults who may have fallen into very rigid workout routines,” Alissa Mosca, CPT and regional operations manager at Planet Fitness.

And for anyone looking to have a more balanced weekly workout routine, sprinkling in something new keeps things fresh. “From a physical standpoint, playful movement still elevates heart rate and challenges coordination and strength, but mentally it feels less intimidating and more energizing.” Mosca says. “I often suggest adding one or two days of playful training into a weekly routine to keep things balanced.”

Mosca, who helps operate one of the largest gym chains in the country, says she’s noticed gym-goers gravitating toward natural movement patterns like hanging or traversing the monkey bars, doing balance drills, or revisiting simple movements like jumping jacks or bear crawls.

“These styles fit naturally with playful fitness because they involve dynamic, full-body movements that many people recognize from earlier in life—things like squats, pushups, jumping, or hanging,” Mosca says.

And just because something feels fun doesn’t mean it’s not effective. Just ask Kirsten Potenza, founder of POUND—a cardio drumming workout program that aims to bring out your inner rockstar. Potenza created POUND in 2011, as an innovative workout to blend self-expression, play, and rhythm into the group fitness experience.

What’s the Difference? – OLAPLEX Inc.

0

Key Takeaways

  • Hair masks and conditioners are both meant to hydrate, improve manageability, and enhance the overall health of hair.
  • Hair masks are thicker, richer, and more intense than conditioners, and they are used less frequently.
  • Using a hair mask softens, strengthens, reduces frizz, and protects hair against damage.
  • Any hair type can benefit from hair masks, but tangly, dry, thick, and color-treated hair gains the most from their deep hydration and restorative effects.

Jump to

Hair masks and conditioners serve similar purposes: they hydrate and nourish our hair. But what’s the difference between these two essentials? Learn about conditioners and hair masks, what they do, whether you need a hair mask, the best ones, and which OLAPLEX hair mask is right for you.

What Is Conditioner?

We’re betting you know what a hair conditioner is and use one religiously, but let’s review. We use conditioner after shampooing to replenish moisture, increase shine, soften, protect, reduce frizz, and detangle. Not all conditioners are created the same, and some serve different purposes. For example, volumizing formulas help lift the roots, while purple conditioners assist with toning hair.

Using conditioner is straightforward, but let’s dive into it anyway:

  1. Wet your hair.
  2. Wash your hair with a shampoo like .4 Bond Maintenance® Shampoo.
  3. Rinse.
  4. Apply a conditioner like .5 Bond Maintenance® Conditioner to the ends and mid-lengths.
  5. Let sit for 1-3 minutes.
  6. Rinse and proceed.

What Is a Hair Mask?

Hair masks share a lot in common with conditioners as they:

  • Soften hair
  • Increase shine
  • Minimize frizz

The key difference between hair masks and conditioners? Hair masks are thicker, richer, and moisturize more intensively than a conditioner. Also, masks are usually used once weekly.

How do you use a hair mask? Here’s how:

  1. Apply to clean, damp hair after shampooing, saturating the mid-lengths to ends.
  2. Leave on for 3 minutes.
  3. Rinse.

How Do I Know If I Need a Hair Mask?

If you have any of the following, it’s a good idea to consider incorporating a hair mask into your routine:

  • Tangled hair
  • Breakage
  • Dryness
  • Color-treated hair

Rich Hydration Mask offers:

  • 16x instant hydration with 6x hydration after five washes*
  • 71% instant reduction in breakage

N º.5P Blonde Enhancer™ Toning Conditioner

If you have blonde or grey hair, Nº.5P is the one for you. It goes beyond your typical purple conditioner.

How Often Should You Use Retinol?

0

Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is one of the most well known products in the skincare world, renowned for its anti-aging properties. However, the question of how often to use retinol can be perplexing, especially for those new to this potent ingredient.

This article will explore the benefits of retinol, how to incorporate it into your skincare routine, and highlight some of Juice Beauty’s top products that feature this superstar ingredient.

What Does Retinol Do?

Retinol is celebrated for its ability to minimize the look of visible signs of skin aging, making it a favorite among those seeking youthful, radiant skin.

You can count on retinol to:

  • Support cell turnover (out with the old, in with the new)
  • Support your skin’s natural collagen production
  • Smooth out the appearance of your skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve the look of skin texture and tone
  • Help with breakouts

However, because retinol is a potent active ingredient, it is essential to use it currently to avoid potential irritation.

How Does Retinol Impact Different Skin Types?

One thing that you should keep in mind is that different skin types will react differently to retinol. Here’s a quick guide about what you can expect, depending on your individual skin type:

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, you are one of the lucky ones — oily skin tends to tolerate retinol quite well. You might be able to use it more frequently than other skin types.

Dry Skin

Go slow and make sure to moisturize well. Your skin might take a little while to adjust, and can dry out easily if you don’t take a measured approach.

Sensitive Skin

If you have particularly sensitive skin, proceed with caution. Start with a lower concentration of retinol and use it less frequently. Many Juice Beauty products are great for sensitive skin, thanks to our natural formulations.

Combination Skin

If you have combination skin, you might need to adjust how you apply retinol, using more of the product on oily areas and less on dry patches.

How Often Should You Use Retinol?

The answer to this question isn’t necessarily one-size-fits-all. As we know, everyone’s skin is different. Still, there are some general guidelines that are considered good skincare practices.

For retinol newbies, here are a few rules of thumb:

  1. Start with using retinol two to three times a week.
  2. Give your skin a few weeks to adjust.
  3. If all goes well (no lingering redness or irritation), gradually increase to every other night.
  4. Eventually, you may be able to use it nightly.

While it can be exciting to bust out new products and try new routines, there’s no trophy for applying retinol every single night. Listen to your skin — it will tell you what it needs.

What Are Some Signs You’re Using Retinol Too Often?

Your skin might not be very happy if you are overdoing the retinol. Keep an eye out for these signs that you are using retinol too often:

  • Redness
  • Dryness or excessive flakiness
  • A burning sensation when you apply other products
  • General skin irritation or sensitivity

If you notice any of these, it’s probably time to dial it back. Think of it as your skin telling you to slow down.

What Are Some Retinol Myths?

Let’s clear up some common misconceptions about retinol:

Myth #1: Retinol Thins Your Skin

The truth? It actually thickens the deeper layers of your skin where wrinkles start. And, believe it or not, this is a good thing! It’s how retinol functions to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Myth #2: You Can’t Use Retinol in the Summer

The truth? You can use retinol year-round. There is a reason this myth was started though. Retinol can make skin extra sensitive to the sun, so it’s doubly important that you wear sunscreen when you are also using retinol.

Myth #3: Retinol and Retinoids Are the Same Thing

The truth? Retinol is a type of retinoid, but it is gentler on the skin than prescription retinoids. We suggest trying over the counter retinol before resorting to retinoids, which can be pricier, and also require a dermatologist appointment to get a prescription.

Myth #4: You Will See Results Overnight

The truth? We wish this one was true, but good things take time. Patience is a virtue when it comes to skincare. It usually takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks to really start to see results.

What Are Some Retinol Products To Try?

Now that you know the ins and outs of retinol, let’s take a closer look at some of Juice Beauty’s retinol superstars. These products are all naturally formulated, with 30% active ingredients and 70% juice, giving you the skin of your dreams while being good to the planet.

Here are some of our top picks:

1. Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Retinol Overnight Serum

This serum is the heavyweight champion of Juice Beauty’s retinol lineup. It packs a punch with 2.5% Bio-Retinol and Retinol, combined with our signature plant stem cell technology. It’s like sending your skin to boot camp while you sleep- you wake up looking refreshed and renewed.

Users reported a 67% reduction in dark spots in less than two months and a 36% reduction in roughness in only 1.5 months.

2. Stem Cellular SleepWrinkle Retinol Overnight Eye Cream

The skin around your eyes is extra sensitive- it needs special care. This eye cream is gentle enough for the delicate eye area but still packs a retinol punch. It’s like giving your eye area a comfy pillow and a smoothing iron all in one.

97% of users in an independent lab study showed improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, while a whopping 100% reported that the skin around the eyes was more hydrated and smoother.

3. Green Apple Age Defy Serum

While not strictly a retinol product, this serum is a perfect pair for a nighttime retinol routine, especially as your skin is getting used to the introduction of retinol. It uses organic fruit acids and antioxidants to brighten and smooth your skin. It’s a great option if you’re looking to ease into retinol or want to complement your retinol routine.

4. Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Ceramide Overnight Cream

We love this intensive hydrating cream as a foil to our Anti-Wrinkle Retinol Overnight Serum.

Especially great for those with dry skin, this cream will help you to wake up with skin feeling replenished and restored.

Squalane derived from olives helps support the skin’s moisture balance, while antioxidant-rich sacred lily and champagne grape seed oil offer skin protective benefits. 91% of those who used this product reported enhanced skin softness and suppleness after just one use, and it was voted Best in Class by Medical News Today.

5. Prebiotix SPF 45 Glow, Daily Multi-Tasking Moisturizer

We told you to wear your sunscreen when using retinol, right? Consider this your reminder. This beloved multi-tasker has natural mineral zinc that melts right into your skin for a hydrated, dewy glow.

Its broad-spectrum SPF will protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays, while Emblica Fruit extract helps protect skin from free radicals. Throw in some aloe leaf juice and jojoba seed oil for moisture, and you’ve got one of our most popular SPF products.

What Are Some Tips for Using Retinol?

Now that you’re armed with some awesome Juice Beauty products, let’s talk about how to use them like a pro.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your retinol routine:

  1. Start slow and steady: Start with a lower concentration of retinol and gradually work your way up. Your skin will thank you.
  2. Night owl: Retinol works best when applied at night. Plus, since you can become more sensitive to the sun, starting out with nighttime application only is the way to go.
  3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize: Retinol can be drying, so make sure to follow up with a good moisturizer.
  4. Sunscreen is your friend: We can’t stress this enough — always wear sunscreen when you’re using retinol.
  5. Take a break if needed: If your skin is feeling irritated, it’s okay to take a break from retinol. Your skin isn’t going anywhere. It’ll be there when you’re ready to start again.

Your Retinol Journey Starts Here

We’ve covered a lot of ground when it comes to retinol. From the basics of retinol to the science behind it, and everything in between. Remember, everyone’s skin is different, so what works for your best friend might not work the same for you. The key is to listen to your skin, start slow, and be patient.

Incorporating retinol into your skincare routine is like embarking on a whole new skincare adventure: there might be a few bumps in the road, but the destination — healthier, younger-looking skin — is totally worth it.

With brands like Juice Beauty, you can feel good about what you’re putting on your skin. Here’s to glowing, youthful skin naturally.

Tarte Shape Tape Week 2026: Details and Dates

0

Viral beauty products now dominate the industry, with social media stats often displayed alongside items in beauty superstores and online storefronts. But 10 years ago, it was a different story. Viral beauty was just beginning to take off, and in 2016, Tarte broke the internet with its now-iconic Shape Tape Concealer. As the tenth anniversary approaches, it only makes sense to celebrate in a big way. Enter Shape Tape Week.

While this isn’t Tarte’s first Shape Tape Week—the brand rolled out a similar sale in 2025—this year promises more for makeup lovers. Blushes, brushes and signature collections are all part of the lineup (more on that in a moment), but the star is the original Shape Tape Concealer, which will be marked down 40 percent starting Sunday.

Shape Tape Week deals are available to everyone on the brand’s website and at participating beauty retailers, but loyalty members get an extra perk. With any Shape Tape Concealer purchase, members will receive a Shape Tape charm while supplies last.

Why We Love Kojic Acid for Hyperpigmentation

0

Sunspots are one of the most common signs of aging, but there are plenty of ways to combat them with the right ingredients. Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of the skin due to an overaccumulation or uneven distribution of melanin, resulting in spotting on the skin. This can be caused by sun exposure, hormones, medication, skin trauma and even acne. To address dark spots, use products that inhibit melanin formation and exfoliate to brighten and target existing pigmented areas. One hyperpigmentation skincare ingredient we love is kojic acid, because of its ability to brighten the complexion in a gentle way.

What is Kojic Acid + How Does it Work?

Kojic acid is a safe and effective skin brightener that absorbs into the skin and stops melanin production by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme that plays a key role in the production of melanin. This makes it ideal for targeting melasma, acne scars and other dark spots.

Where Does Kojic Acid Come From?

Kojic Acid found in skincare products is most commonly derived from fungi during fermentation. It is also found in soy, rice and other grains.

Where Can I Find Kojic Acid?

Kojic Acid can be found in Brightening Polish, Beta-Clarity AHA Clarifying Peel, Beta-Clarity Pro 5 Liquid Exfoliant, and Hydra-Bright AHA Glow Peel. Each of these products can be added to a skincare ritual for those who are concerned with hyperpigmentation or have skin in need of brightening.

Use Brightening Polish up to five times per week. Massage a small amount onto damp skin after cleansing, then rinse and follow with your serum.

Add Beta-Clarity Pro 5 Liquid Exfoliant to your skincare ritual up to three times weekly. Powered by salicylic acid, it’s also great for decongesting pores and treating breakouts too.

Our peel treatments Beta-Clarity AHA Clarifying Peel and Hydra-Bright AHA Glow Peel both use kojic acid and can be performed on a monthly basis to supplement your daily and weekly rituals. Beta-Clarity AHA Clarifying Peel is a level 2 balancing and breakout-targeting peel, while Hydra-Bright AHA Glow Peel delivers instant brightening and is suitable for all skin types.

Be sure to wear an SPF of at least 30 daily, especially while treating hyperpigmentation.

Can You Use Niacinamide and Retinol Together?

0

In the world of skincare, two powerhouse ingredients have been making waves: niacinamide and retinol. As clean beauty enthusiasts, we are often asked whether these two ingredients can be used together safely. The short answer is yes, but there’s so much more to explore on the topic.

Let’s learn more about these two skin-loving ingredients and discover how they can work in harmony to give you the radiant, healthy complexion you’ve always dreamed of.

What Is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a water-soluble vitamin that offers a wide array of benefits for your skin. This versatile ingredient has gained popularity in recent years due to its ability to address multiple skin concerns simultaneously.

Some of the key benefits of niacinamide include:

  • Support for skin barrier function
  • Soothing properties
  • Minimizing the appearance of pores
  • Evening out the look of skin tone

What Is Retinol?

Retinol, a form of vitamin A, has long been hailed as a gold standard in anti-aging skincare. The powerful ingredient works by stimulating collagen production and increasing cell turnover, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin.

The benefits of retinol include:

Do Retinol and Niacinamide Work Well Together?

Now that you know the individual benefits of niacinamide and retinol, you might be wondering how they work together. The good news is that these two ingredients can complement each other beautifully, creating a synergistic effect that enhances their individual benefits.

Niacinamide can help counteract some of the potential irritation that retinol may cause, making it an excellent companion for those with sensitive skin. While retinol works to support proper skin cell turnover, niacinamide helps support the skin barrier, ensuring your skin remains protected and hydrated.

Together, these ingredients address a wide range of skin concerns, from fine lines and wrinkles to uneven skin tone and texture.

How To Incorporate Niacinamide and Retinol Into Your Routine

Luckily for us, niacinamide and retinol are totally safe to use in conjunction with one another. Let’s explore the best ways to incorporate them into your skincare routine.

Step 1: Cleanse

Start with a gentle, mild cleanser to remove any impurities and prepare your skin for treatment.

Our Green Apple Brightening Gel Cleanser is the perfect choice if you’re looking to effectively cleanse and gently exfoliate their skin. At Juice Beauty, every product is crafted with our exclusive Bio70+ technology that ensures each formula has a foundation of at least 70% organic ingredients. This creates the perfect antioxidant-rich base for our potent active ingredients to do their job.

With our Brightening Gel Cleanser, malic acid and green apple juice provide powerful antioxidants to help beautify your skin.

Step 2: Apply Serum

Applied directly after cleansing your skin, the right serum will deliver vitamins, antioxidants, and other active ingredients straight to your skin. It’s worth investing in a serum that will provide visible results.

Our Stem Cellular Anti-Wrinkle Retinol Overnight Serum is a must try, and one of our best sellers. It was also voted Best in Class by the Chicago Tribune. In an eight-week study, participants noticed a 67% reduction in dark spots and a 28% reduction in wrinkles after using the product.

Step 3: Wait and Absorb

Try to be patient if you can. Waiting between each layer of product will allow each individual product to fully absorb into your skin, and will also reduce the incidence of piling. This doesn’t take very long — usually three to five minutes.

A great way to ensure that your serum is absorbed before applying your moisturizer is to brush your teeth in between each of the products.

Step 4: Apply Moisturizer

After using a serum, apply your moisturizer. This is a very personal decision that is dependent upon your skin type. Those with dry skin should look for rich, creamy formulas, while those with oily or combination skin may want to consider a gel formulation.

Product Spotlight: Check out our Prebiotix C-Boost72 Hydrating Whipped Cream 20% Vitamin C Niacinamide Glow Complex. Pairing this with a serum that has niacinamide is a great way to use both ingredients in your skincare routine. This particular moisturizer is clinically proven to increase the luminosity of your skin in just four weeks.

In an independent lab study, 93% of participants reported visible improvements in skin dryness and hydration, while 86% reported a visibly brighter complexion.

Step 5 (For Daytime): Apply Your Sunscreen

If you are doing this routine prior to starting your day, sunscreen is the most important step. UVA and UVB rays from the sun can undo all of the good you’re doing for your skin, accelerate the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, and cause dark spots.

Want to perfect your skin tone instantly while also delivering a healthy dose of antioxidants, moisture, and sun protection? We love our Stem Cellular CC Cream Zinc SPF 30 for daily wear. With hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and mineral zinc SPF 30, you really can have it all in this one product.

Step 6 (For Nighttime): Use a Facial Oil

This step is totally optional, but some people, especially those with dryer skin, love to finish their skin routine with a facial oil.

Our Stem Cellular Vinifera Replenishing Oil combines sunflower oil, grapeseed oil and jojoba oil for rich, emollient moisture. It’s also chock full of antioxidants, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

What Are Some Tips for Success When Using Retinol and Niacinamide?

To make sure that you get the most out of your new clean beauty routine, keep these tips in mind:

  1. Start Slow: This is especially important when it comes to using retinol. Start with lower concentrations, and use it only two to three times a week until your skin is acclimated. After a few weeks, if all is well, you can start using it every other day, and then every day if desired.
  2. Use Retinol at Night: When you’re first getting started, it’s best to use retinol only at night, since it can make skin more sensitive to the sun.
  3. Don’t Forget SPF: Whether you are using your retinol/niacinamide combo at night or during the day, it’s important to remember to use sunscreen, always (yes, even on a cloudy day).
  4. Listen to Your Skin: Every body is different, and that includes the largest organ in the body: your skin. Pay attention to how your skin reacts to incorporating new ingredients, and adjust accordingly.
  5. Be Patient: It can generally take four to eight weeks to see any significant changes from a new skincare routine, so don’t be discouraged if you’re not seeing results right away.

How To Choose the Right Skincare Products

When selecting retinol and niacinamide products, you need to make sure that you are taking care with what you use. At Juice Beauty, we believe that if you are putting junk on your skin, that’s exactly what you’ll get for results — and what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in your body.

Take care to choose high-quality, clean beauty products that align with your skin’s needs and your personal values. We are committed to providing you with effective, organic skincare options that are good for you and for the planet.

What To Look For

When you’re choosing new skincare, look out for the following:

  • Clean Formulations: Opt for products that are free from harmful chemicals and synthetic ingredients.
  • Natural, Organic Ingredients: Our products are 70% juice, and 30% active ingredients. You can trust that you are putting the very best on your skin.
  • Appropriate Concentrations: Depending on where you are in your retinol journey, you may want to look for products with a lower concentration at first (0.5% to 1%) before leveling up. For niacinamide, a 2% to 5% concentration is typically a great place to start. Remember, you can always increase.

The Bottom Line

Incorporating niacinamide and retinol into your skincare routine can be a game changer for those looking to brighten skin tone or reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

By understanding how these ingredients work together, and exercising best practices, you can maximize their benefits and get the skin of your dreams.

How Long Does Postpartum Last, Really?

0

Before Bri Adams, 33, had her first child, in the spring of 2022, she recalls being briefed on the series of pediatrician appointments that would follow delivery—check-ins at day three, week two, and at months one, two, and beyond to ensure her newborn was thriving. Just a single visit was booked with her ob-gyn, for the six-week mark, “so I honestly assumed that by then, I’d be healed and out of diapers. I knew I might not be sleeping through the night, but I thought I’d have things together emotionally and hormonally and physically,” Adams tells SELF. “When that was blatantly not the case, I felt completely blindsided.”

As Adams would come to learn, plenty of societal norms surrounding childbirth mask the realities of postpartum or delegitimize the recovery it entails. “The idea of bouncing back is pervasive in our culture, and the lack of federal paid leave means people are often forced to get back to their normal life whether or not they’re healed,” Rachel Blake, MD, an ob-gyn in New York and Chamber of Mothers board member, tells SELF. The fact that you may only see your ob-gyn once or twice postpartum further minimizes the gravity of this period, Dr. Blake says, as does the long-ingrained idea of the six-week checkpoint being an “all-clear” for sex and exercise. Adams, for one, was shocked to be given the go-ahead for sex at her own such appointment, despite reporting anxious feelings and having still-healing stitches.

In recent years, recognition has grown among experts of the unique tribulations of the postpartum phase—a time during which nearly two-thirds of maternal deaths occur—and the insufficiency of a single health-care encounter; in 2018, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommended an “ongoing approach,” beginning within the first three weeks postpartum and wrapping up by week 12, reflecting a “fourth trimester.” But even as this concept has trickled into the mainstream, health care has been slow to change, and plenty of moms, like Adams, are caught off-guard by just how long it takes to feel normal again amid the postpartum onslaught. And the truth is, even an extra “trimester” can be a vast underestimate when you consider all the variables in flux.

It may be around 12 to 18 months post-birth until the biological shifts of postpartum settle, depending on factors like how your pregnancy unfolded and whether you breastfeed. But how long it takes to feel like yourself again is also complicated by the challenges of becoming a mom in a society where support for parents is increasingly lacking. Read on to get the lay of the postpartum land, according to science, doctors, and moms themselves.

Hormone changes trigger symptoms that can outlast the fourth trimester.

Pregnancy is, famously, a hormonal rollercoaster, and the ride doesn’t just stop when the baby arrives. At delivery, levels of estrogen and progesterone plummet from their pregnancy peak, which is the culprit behind the “baby blues” in some women, or a period of mood swings lasting a couple weeks, Sarah Oreck, MD, MS, a Los Angeles-based reproductive psychiatrist and founder of maternal mental health platform Mavida Health, tells SELF. That might look like feeling tearful or weepy at any given moment, yet overjoyed the next. (In certain women who may be more sensitive to rapid hormone changes, this shift can also be the “origin story” for postpartum depression, Dr. Oreck points out.)

Chinese beauty chain ‘ONLY YOUNG’ accused of copying Olive Young branding

0

THE WHAT? A Chinese beauty retailer operating under the name “ONLY YOUNG” is drawing scrutiny for closely mirroring the branding and store identity of South Korea’s CJ Olive Young.

THE DETAILS The retailer reportedly uses green as its core brand colour across store signage, shopping bags and interiors, closely resembling Olive Young’s signature look. Its name is also seen as conceptually similar: the English name “ONLY YOUNG” and the Chinese name “Qingning Xiaoyang (青柠小漾)” reference “lime” imagery, echoing Olive Young’s “olive” branding.

The chain is also leveraging Korean Wave marketing, using K-pop music in promotional content on Douyin, where its account has reportedly generated around 156,000 likes. Online commentary has highlighted the similarity, with users describing the retail experience as near-identical to Olive Young stores.

THE WHY? The emergence of Olive Young-style retail formats in China reflects the continued pull of K-beauty merchandising and Hallyu-driven consumer culture, even as Olive Young itself has exited the market. The South Korean retailer withdrew from China in 2016 after entering in 2013, amid geopolitical tensions and restrictions on Korean cultural content. The situation also highlights ongoing concerns around brand imitation in Asia’s beauty retail sector as local players seek to replicate proven concepts.
