THE WHAT? LG Household & Health Care and LG Chem have jointly developed a large-capacity mono-material refill pouch designed to improve recyclability while maintaining industrial-grade durability.
THE DETAILS The new packaging solution replaces traditional multi-layer composite refill pouches with a polyethylene (PE) mono-material structure, simplifying recycling and improving waste separation efficiency. The companies said the packaging overcomes previous limitations associated with mono-material formats by reinforcing durability for use in 2L-class refill products. The pouch incorporates LG Chem’s ultra-thin ‘Unikuble’ film technology, which delivers a 14-micrometer thickness while retaining the strength and physical performance typically associated with composite materials. Mono-material packaging can achieve an “excellent” recyclability rating compared to the “fair” grade commonly assigned to mixed-material alternatives. LG H&H first introduced PE mono-material refill packaging in Korea’s household goods sector in 2023 and plans to expand adoption across additional product categories as part of its ESG strategy.
THE WHY? The development reflects increasing demand within the consumer goods and packaging sectors for scalable recyclable packaging solutions that support sustainability targets without compromising product protection or functionality.
