Anyone that knows me knows that my dogs are my life, truly! I love them so much and always want the absolute best for them which means cooking for them daily and giving them the best supplements I can find! And, because I know so many of you love your dogs the same, I wanted to share some of the supplements we make sure to implement as the seasons change! As winter rolls in and temperatures drop, supporting your dog’s immune system becomes just as important as keeping them warm. Cold weather, less outdoor activity, and changes in household routines can all impact their immune resilience, digestion, skin, and joints so its key to find the right holistic supplements to help your dogs thrive all season long.

Probiotics-

To really keep your dog’s immune system strong as we head into winter, the first and most important place to start is with gut health because roughly 70–80% of the immune system resides in the gut. Adored Beast’s Love Bugs probiotic is one of the most trusted options for strengthening digestion and immunity together. This blend contains 14 different strains of beneficial bacteria plus a prebiotic called larch arabinogalactan, which feeds those healthy microbes so they can flourish. Maintaining a strong gut flora helps dogs absorb nutrients, regulate inflammation, and defend against pathogens they encounter more frequently in winter. Love Bugs is also free of fillers, making it ideal for sensitive or holistic households.

To Use– Simply sprinkle the recommended dose over your dog’s food once per day. Most dogs take about ¼ to ½ teaspoon depending on weight, but always follow the label. For best results, introduce it slowly over several days, then use consistently throughout the winter months. You’ll likely notice better digestion, firmer stools, and an overall boost in energy and skin condition within a few weeks, win win!

Want to just cut to the chase and try these out? I made a cart full of my faves here for easy checkout.

Omega-3s-

Next, we always want to focus on omega-3 fatty acids which we actually do year round, alongside probiotics. Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet Fish Oil is a superior source of EPA and DHA, two essential fats that dogs can’t produce on their own but need for a strong immune system, healthy skin, and reduced inflammation. During winter, when dogs are often exposed to dry indoor air and less sunlight, omega-3s help maintain hydration in the skin barrier and support the immune system’s ability to modulate inflammation. Nordic Naturals is widely respected for its purity and sustainability, using wild-caught anchovies and sardines tested for heavy metals and contaminants. The oil is in a natural triglyceride form, which is easier for the body to absorb.

To Use- Add it to your dog’s meal once per day, following the dosing chart on the bottle based on weight. It’s best given with food to enhance absorption and prevent stomach upset. Over time, you’ll notice a softer, shinier coat, calmer skin, and better joint comfort, especially in older dogs or those who get stiff in the cold.

Immune Boosting-

For an herbal immune boost, Glacier Peak Holistics Peak Immune Powder offers seasonal support when your dog needs it most. Unlike daily probiotics or oils, this blend is meant to be used periodically only, about 10 days every three months, or during seasonal changes when the immune system is challenged. It’s made entirely of organic herbs like astragalus, echinacea, and olive leaf, which gently stimulate immune response and help the body adapt to stress. It’s a great addition at the start of winter, during a cold snap, or after travel or boarding.

To Use- You simply mix the powder into food once daily following your dog’s weight guidelines, with typical doses ranging from ⅛ teaspoon for small dogs to ¾ teaspoon for large breeds. After a 10-day course, pause for a few months. This short, strategic immune reset can make a noticeable difference in your dog’s energy and resistance to seasonal bugs.

Mushrooms-

Mushrooms are another powerhouse for immune modulation, and Four Leaf Rover Seven ‘Shrooms is one of the cleanest, most effective formulas available. Mushrooms like reishi, turkey tail, and maitake contain beta-glucans that help balance the immune system, supporting both defense and recovery without overstimulation. Four Leaf Rover uses the whole fruiting body mushrooms rather than the cheaper mycelium grown on grain, which means your dog is getting the full potency of each species, aka the best! The company also third-party tests its products for beta-glucan levels to guarantee quality and transparency. Daily use can help your dog maintain energy, resilience, and healthy cellular function throughout winter.

To Use- Start with a small dose, often as little as 1/16 teaspoon for small dogs or ⅛ teaspoon for medium to large dogs and mix it into their food once per day. You can safely use this year-round, but it’s especially beneficial in winter when the immune system is under more stress. We give this to our dog’s year round but during Winter it’s a must especially!

Anti-Inflammatory Support-

Lastly, CocoTherapy’s Coco-Gold provides a holistic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant foundation to tie everything together. This golden blend combines virgin coconut oil with organic turmeric, ginger, and black pepper for enhanced absorption. Each ingredient serves a purpose: coconut oil provides healthy medium-chain fats that support metabolism and skin health, turmeric and ginger help combat inflammation, and black pepper boosts curcumin’s bioavailability. This is especially useful in colder months when dogs may experience stiffer joints, dull coats, or sluggish digestion. CocoTherapy’s products are USDA-certified organic and crafted specifically for pets, ensuring purity and safety! Plus, your dogs will LOVE it!

To Use- Start with small amounts, about ⅛ teaspoon for toy breeds up to 2 teaspoons for giant dogs, given 2–3 times daily with food. Introduce gradually over a week to prevent digestive upset, and always consult your vet before using turmeric-based blends if your dog is on medication or has gallbladder issues. When used consistently, Coco-Gold supports smoother movement, a glossy coat, and a calm, well-functioning gut.

When combined, these five supplements create a comprehensive winter wellness routine that covers every layer of a dog’s immune system, from the gut microbiome and inflammation balance to antioxidant protection and adaptive defense. A great schedule is to give Love Bugs and Coco-Gold in the morning meal, Nordic Naturals fish oil with the evening meal, the Four Leaf Rover mushroom blend daily at either feeding, and use Peak Immune Powder for 10-day cycles during the start and middle of the season. Keep an eye on your dog’s energy, digestion, and coat as markers of improvement, and adjust doses gradually if needed. Together, these natural supports help your dogs thrive through winter with stronger immunity, healthier skin, better digestion, and that happy, balanced glow that shows they’re truly well from the inside out. And hey, don’t forget, even if you cant get them all, even getting 1-2 is better than nothing so start where the budget allows and go from there!
